Sports tournament held to fight underage drinking TEMBILE SGQOLANA THE Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) has intensified its fight against underage drinking through a schools sport tournament that was held at the Dumpy Adams on Thursday. ECLB communications officer Monalisa Nogilana said the theme of the day was “Booze not for learners”. “The aim is to educate and influence behavioural change in groups

that have the inclination to abuse liquor and sensitize them about the consequence of drinking,” she said. She said the duty of the ECLB is to regulate the liquor industry and they have a mandate to teach people not to abuse alcohol. “In the underage drinking campaign, we visit schools and teach them about the dangers of abusing alcohol,” Nogilana said. She said they are targeting high schools. In addition to sport, debate and drama events are also held to get the message of the dangers of under-

age drinking across to the pupils. “We have ten schools from Komani and two from Ezibeleni participating in the tournament,” she said. This campaign is one of the programmes in the social accountability section of the department. She said this is an annual programme and it is targeting district municipalities. “We are seeing the results after the campaigns and they are positive,” she said. Maria Louw High School grade 12 pupil, Asisipho Madolo, said they

have learnt a lot from the programme. “We were taught about the dangers of drinking and how every pupil should participate in activities at their schools,” she said. She said pupils are vulnerable and are easily influenced. “They start drinking at an early age,” she said. The teachers highlighted the challenges they face at the schools because of alcohol abuse, claiming they are fighting a losing battle as teachers.

The winners of the netball games were Bulelani High School who took home a R1 000 voucher. Second placed Rubusana took home a voucher worth R650. In the boys’ soccer games, Nkwanca took the first place and a prize of R1 000 and Bulelani High School took R650 for their second place. In the girls’ soccer games Rubusana took the first place and a prize of a R1 000 voucher, a soccer kit and a computer. Second placed Get Ahead College took home R650.
