Welcome to the June 2020 issue of Queen Size Magazine. The question that goes around a lot these days is “how are you holding up”. It should be a simple question but it’s not these days. Life for a lot of people after this will forever be changed. What is normal these days? How do we get back to who we were before COVID-19? So many questions and not enough answers. My advice is to dig deep and find something positive to take away from this. I know it’s easier said than done, but it’s possible. A friend of mine once told me that if you sit in a problem long enough it will become your new norm. We have had to change up a lot of how we normally run our businesses; which in turn has stirred up some of our creative juices. But through this all, we are still dedicated to bringing you the same quality content that we have been doing before this all started. Thank you all for continuing to support Queen Size Magazine. HOW TO COMBAT LONELINESS DURING SOCIAL DISTANCING| STATEPOINT

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, many people are staying in their homes to help prevent the spread of the disease. Feeling lonely from time to time is natural, but this unprecedented time of social distancing could lead to increased loneliness. There are some easy ways to feel connected to others, even when you aren’t seeing them in person. Consider these tips from Dr. Doug Nemecek, Cigna chief medical officer for behavioral health. • Use technology… but not too much. Social media is a favorite and easy way to stay connected to family and friends, but too much use can leave you feeling lonely. Cigna’s 2020 U.S. Loneliness Index found that 72 percent of very heavy social media users identify themselves as lonely. Balance technology use with disconnecting and taking time for yourself. Use real-time interactions with others, like video chats, to build meaningful connections and limit time spent passively scrolling social media. Read a book, take a walk or do a puzzle after screen time. It may help you feel more connected when you spend time online. • Join a virtual club or group. There are plenty of resources available to find virtual book clubs, craft communities or even fitness challenges. You can start a new hobby, learn a skill or find others who are interested in the same things as you, remotely. Once the guidelines for social distancing are lifted, you’ll have new friends you can meet in person. • Spend time outdoors. Simply leaving your

house to take a jog around your neighborhood or to walk your dog a few blocks could improve your spirits, refreshing you for the next time you virtually connect with others. • Ask those you reach out to how they’re really doing. How you connect with those in your network makes a significant difference in how lonely you feel. People tend to feel less lonely when connecting on a deeper level. Cigna’s study found that those who do not feel they have close relationships that give them emotional security and well-being have an average loneliness score of nearly 15 points higher than those that do. When video chatting with friends, ask them for their most honest response when you ask how they’re doing. Everyone will likely feel better for it. • Rethink working hours. We spend approximately 90,000 hours at work over our lifetime, so how we spend that time will play an important role in how we feel overall. Improving your work-life balance and connecting with colleagues can reduce loneliness. Your employer may also benefit from you feeling less lonely. Lonely employees are less productive, produce lower quality work and miss more days of work. So, talk to your boss about slight changes you can make to how you spend your working hours. This could help you feel less lonely and benefit your company. Being unable to spend time with others inperson will likely cause many of us to feel lonely, but there are ways to help lessen those feelings during this challenging time.

However, cranking out three meals a day can be a burden. In fact, the average American can only prepare five meals without a recipe, according to a OnePoll survey. Consider these fun tips to add a little diversity to your family’s daily menu.

● BUILD A TACO BAR. This is an easy way to use leftovers from the week. Pull out tortillas or make rice, add any leftover proteins and sides then mix in taco seasonings. ● MAKE A FAMILY CLASSIC. Think back to your childhood and the one or two dishes that became family favorites. Bust out those family cookbooks and recreate classics by having the kids help with age-appropriate tasks. ● TRY A MICROWAVE-FRIENDLY MEAL. For those nights when no one can decide what to eat, or when you’re simply tired of cooking, turn to the microwave. Microwaving seafood can actually help preserve nutrients that are typically broken down when heated using other cooking methods. The key is to use steam: Place the fish in a microwaveable bag or choose one of the many ready-to-microwave selections in your grocer’s freezer section. Steaming fish in the microwave cooks fish evenly and preserves texture and taste.

Despite a desire for perfect sleep, Americans are not even close to getting the recommended eight hours a night, and 1 in 4 Americans believes the sleep they are getting isn’t the quality rest they want and need. “To put sleep deprivation into perspective, 37% of Americans report they have fallen asleep behind the wheel,” said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, a sleep health expert for Mattress Firm. “About 5% report falling asleep while driving on a monthly basis. Clearly, sleep deprivation is wide-spread and a risk factor for overall well-being.” With chronic sleep deprivation, the brain’s ability to maintain attention and focus continues to decline over time. In addition to impairing mental function, lack of sleep has been associated with a host of risks to overall health. Prevent sleep deprivation and take charge of your mental and physical health with these tips from Kansagra:

time with your internal clock. While eight hours is the standard, you may need to adjust up or down to find the amount sleep that lets you wake feeling rested. DEVELOP A PRE-BEDTIME ROUTINE. You can train your body to prepare for sleep by creating a pattern or a routine that eases you toward sleep.

NAP RESPONSIBLY. When you’re feeling tired, it’s no surprise the best solution may be sleep. Some research suggests a quick power nap can actually give you a stronger boost than caffeine. However, too much rest during the day can throw off your nighttime sleep pattern. Aim for no more than 20 minutes so you don’t wake up groggy, and time your nap for the mid-point of your wake cycle (halfway between when you wake up and go to sleep). LIMIT SCREEN TIME. If you turn to your phone to help wind down while you’re in bed, you’re not alone, but you may be doing more harm than good. According to a survey conducted by Mattress Firm on sleep habits, the average person scrolls on his or her phone while lying in bed for more than 12 minutes before shutting down for the night. What’s more, the light from the screen serves as a stimulant, as does the digital content you’re viewing. That means you’re making it physically harder to fall asleep than if you put down your devices at least 30 minutes before bed. STICK TO A SLEEP SCHEDULE. The average person gets less than six hours of sleep per night, according to the survey – a far cry from the eight hours most experts recommend. One way to buck this trend is to make it a point to turn in and wake up at the same time every day so you synchronize your sleep

“Even something as simple as putting on a sleep mask each night, reading in bed for 20 minutes or practicing the same shower routine at the same time every night signals to your brain it’s time to hit the hay,” Kansagra said. “Creating a bedtime routine that lasts 20-30 minutes and sticking to that routine can make all the difference in your energy, productivity and mood.” FIND THE RIGHT SLEEP POSITION. If you’re looking for the secret to a good night’s sleep, comfort may be the key. According to the survey, those who sleep on their backs at night are most likely to report they slept “perfectly well.” The most common sleeping position, on your side, correlates with the worst sleep reports. It may take some trial and error to find the right position that keeps your spine aligned, allows you to breathe freely and evenly distributes your weight. Spring has arrived; the sun is shining and we are ready to get out and enjoy it all. However, we are still quarantine and patiently waiting for outside to open back up. In the meantime, that should not stop you from getting your latest fashions and beauty ideas together. Every season the fashion trends either change or evolve; as so does hair and makeup. I am firm believer that hair should complement the total look; no matter the length or color; allow the hair to do the talking. In this edition of QSM we are taking you on a denim journey, and I have a few hair ideas to share.

Denim today is nothing like It was way back when; it has truly become more widely accepted especially in corporate America. Designers have found new creative ways to make denim wearable, comfortable and extremely stylish. Some may say oh I don’t find denim sexy or doesn’t make me feel sexy; get out of your head and step out of the box and try something new. For example; let’s say you’re going on a casual date; casual meaning you don’t have to get super dressy; and you still want to be cute but comfortable. With this style you can use your own hair or If you have extensions you can work with that; simply take the hair pull it up into a messy top knot, add few baby hairs “just a few”, grab your favorite stretch denim jeans a fly pump,

Maybe the top knot is not your thing or maybe you’re a natural woman; no worries Its ok to let your natural tresses show; rock your kinky curly afro with some added hair jewelry and or spray on hair shimmer for added fun. Hair jewelry is a new trend in which I love; its adds so much adventure to your look. Perhaps the occasion calls for a dressier look; a nice full loose halo braid will always save the day. Maybe you don’t have time to smooth out your edges; this halo braid is a great way to hide all the imperfections and yet give you a very elegant look; remember a halo braid does not need to be super neat. The goal is to provide you with a quick whimsical style that can be achievable in a matter of minutes. Another great go to style is the beachy wave; this look is so universal for so many occasions. Whether your hair is long or cut into an edgy bob; it’s a fun look that performs differently for everyone. If you’re a girl that doesn’t like using heat to create this look you can always use flexi rods on dry/pre blown out hair. With the flexi rods it’s great to use a light moisturizing cream before rolling each section; allow the flexi rods to set the hair overnight. Depending in how dense your hair is; taking medium to large sections will provide you with a much bigger wave pattern. Lastly, I think a lady should cut her hair at least once in her lifetime; there are so many short looks that are very trendy these days. And what a way to be liberated and still stylish then with a new cut. A cut can come in many forms; doesn’t always have to be super short, it can be by trimming off three inches and adding some layers for movement. Or doing the big chop and rocking your natural curls will bring out a new attitude in you. And adding color would just set everything on fire; you mind even grow your hair back, plus it’s easy to keep up and there a plethora of product’s today to help you maintain your curls. Find the Spring/Summer months your opportunity to explore new fashions and beauty trends; nothing calls for a new hair style more than a new outfit to compliment it. And always consult with your professional stylist to help you with this big decision; creating a mood board has always help me with deciding my next fashion and beauty moves. My name is Jae, I’m a plus size model, content creator, and Influencer who posts about plus size fashion, beauty, and lifestyle! In 2019 I started my personal brand, Jae Bae Productions, since then I have modeled and created content for over 100 companies and counting. I have focused on working with plus size fashion brands and beauty brands to show society that beauty has no size! The mission of my personal brand, Jae Bae Productions is to empower plus size individuals by highlighting brands/products that support and stand by size inclusiveness. My vision is that one day the majority of brands worldwide will incorporate size inclusiveness! One of the things that I love most about working with brands, is that I have the opportunity to increase visibility of larger plus size bodies in the media. I’m constantly working to bring more visibility to brands that are supportive of body positivity and size inclusiveness. I began by capturing images of myself wearing my favorite brands, using my favorite beauty products, and trying out new brands to provide reviews for the body positive community, in 2019! My personal brand focuses on practicing self-love, which is the secret behind how I became so confident in myself. Something that is really important to me is to always show the real and raw versions of myself, just as much as I share the glammed-up fashionista parts of myself. No “one” thing defines any of us, and that is something that I will always try to convey in my content. I’m many things, and so are you. Beautiful. Strong. Plus size. Disabled. Mixed race. Confident. I see beauty in every single person on this earth, because beauty exists within every living being. So, the conversation I want to start in 2020, as a plus size content creator is why not love yourself? Why not love your body at every stage of life? Why not chase your dreams? Why not take the risk? It’s time that we start changing the “Why?” into “Why not?” I have big dreams to leave my mark on this world and that goal became more important than ever the second I thought I may not have that opportunity. It was during my darkest days that I decided “Why not now?” When my health was unstable and I didn’t know whether my health was going to improve or worsen, I decided the moment was RIGHT NOW. In life it seems that most of us are always waiting for the “right” or “perfect” moment, but that “right” moment is something that YOU create. The “right” moment is NOW because tomorrow isn’t promised. The “right” moment is the one where you decide that it’s time to start making your dreams a reality. My dream is to help others love themselves, help others to keep fighting, and to show society that all bodies are good bodies. There is beauty at every size because beauty has no size limits!

Let’s get to know Jae QSM: How are you doing during this pandemic? Both personally and professionally? Jae: I’m doing well both personally and professionally, I try to take things day by day since there is so much uncertainty at the moment. I will say that some days seem to be easier than others, and sometimes it can get overwhelming. Personally, it’s been a struggle not being able to leave the house at all. This has affected things professionally as well since I’m currently unable to do any photoshoots outside like I normally would. I’ve also had campaigns that have gotten delayed, since many brands aren’t actively working at the moment. QSM: I’m sorry to hear that. As a content creator, did you have to incorporate some “out of your norm” creativity? Jae: Yes, instead of being able to get photos in a full studio or outside I’ve had to switch to creating all of my content at home. To do this, I’ve been doing many photoshoots in my glam room and even my backyard at times. I’ve also tried to incorporate some bright backdrops to give a spring / summer vibe to the content that I’m creating. QSM: With a lot of businesses shut down you mentioned that this has affected your business; how are you making up for it? Jae: Yes, it has definitely had an impact on brand collaborations. Many businesses are not operating due to the pandemic, and those that are aren’t actively scheduling influencer campaigns. To make up for this, I have shifted my priority to focus on my Influencer Consulting and Coaching business. I’ve been also working on projects / improvements on other aspects of my brand.

QSM: When did you fall in love with Jae? Jae: I fell in love with myself right after high school. During high school I was in an abusive home and this affected my confidence, happiness, and overall well-being. I’ve been plus-size my entire life and I experienced my fair share of fat-shaming during high school, this combined with being in an abusive home took a toll on me. It was three days before my high-school graduation, when I was finally able to escape my abusive home. This is when I was finally able to feel confident, happy, and fall in love with myself. I felt so free and I was finally able to be my true self, which helped me begin to feel super confident. I was proud of myself for being the first in my family to graduate high school and I was so proud of my strength to overcome adversities. I felt like I proved everyone who doubted me wrong. That’s the moment I fell in love with myself, and since then I’ve continued to fall more in love with myself every day. QSM: What was the process like for you in the beginning having to reach out to brands to work with them? Can you share some of that without giving away the secrets to all of your hard work? Jae: In the beginning, reaching out to brands was a little intimidating especially since many brands look at numbers first and foremost. When I first started reaching out to brands, I was told “no” many times because my following wasn’t very large at the time. This can be frustrating to a lot of content creators, but it’s normal to hear “no” much more than you hear “yes.” Through the process of speaking to brands, you start to learn exactly what they are looking for. Use this to your advantage, by placing your focus on certain areas of your brand while still remaining authentic.

BEAUTY AND FASHION QSM: You have done some amazing work in the short time that you have started your brand. When you started did you already know what direction you wanted to go in with your brand? Jae: Honestly, not at all. I knew that I wanted to help people and share my life experiences to help others, but I had no idea how I was going to do that. I started out by trying to figure out what type of content I liked creating the most, and what my audience was responding best to. It took several months before I felt like I had identified my specific niche. To be completely honest with you, I’m still learning something new every single day. Through trial and error I have been able to get a good grasp on the direction I want to go with my brand. QSM: Good for you! You talked about your brand focusing on practicing selflove. What are some ways that people can do that? Jae: Self-love is everything! There are so many different ways that we can practice self-love, and it honestly will look different for everyone. Some of the best ways to practice self-love in my opinion are to give yourself positive affirmations daily. When you feel yourself wanting to be negative or feel down about yourself, remember all the things you are good at and all of the accomplishments you’ve made.

INFLUENCER SPOTLIGHT | JAE BAE PRODUCTIONS Another great way to practice self-love is to be patient and understanding with yourself, and remember that each and every one of us is a work-in-progress. Another way that I like to practice self-love is thinking about how unique I am and celebrating all the things that make me different. One of my favorite ways to practice self-love is to have a great self-care routine. During my personal self-care routine, I take time to focus on skincare, haircare, and things that make me feel great physically. Self-love is so empowering and I find that as long as you are making the conscious effort to love yourself more, then that’s all that matters. QSM: Are you comfortable sharing your “dark days” that you mentioned on our last live interview? Jae: As hard as it might be to share my dark days, I really strive to be transparent with my followers because I always want to be my authentic self. I want to show people that despite having dark days, we can get through anything. Some of my dark days have included comparing myself to others, not being patient or understanding with myself and my body. As much as I try to be a positive light in this world, there are days that I struggle with being positive. Many of my dark days have also come from not being patient with my body. As a woman who has multiple chronic illnesses, my body doesn’t always cooperate with me and I get frustrated with myself. Despite the dark days, there is always something to be grateful for and that is something that gets me through tough days. QSM: What are you doing to maintain good health for yourself? I know for a fact that there is this big misconception that because we are plus size we don’t practice good health. Jae: I’m trying to do a number of things to maintain good physical and good mental health during this time. I’ve been dancing, doing yoga, and using workout machines in my home to try and stay active which has helped my mental health. I’ve also tried to be patient with myself and realize that we are all finding our new “normal” during this time. I believe that it’s so important to practice good mental health every day, and practicing good physical health can help with mental health as well.

you need to take a day to just relax, don’t feel bad about it. I know that the internet is filled with memes and things that say you need to be your most productive self during this pandemic, but that’s not true. Don’t let the pressure from society make you upset with yourself for not hustling every minute of every day. Be patient with yourself and show yourself some of the kindness that you show others. As cliché as it may seem, another good piece of advice is to stay as positive as you can. Remember that storms can’t last forever, and that tough times don’t last, but tough people do! QSM: First, how are you all and the brand holding up during this time? Beatrice: These are definitely interesting times. Our business has been affected more than we thought possible. Many consumers are only spending on essentials, and new pants for work or jeans for going out don’t fall under that umbrella. However, we are doing our best to maintain team morale and share with others what makes our brand different. QSM: When you were younger, did you see yourself working in fashion? Beatrice: Looking back now, fashion was always an undercurrent in my life. As far back as first grade I remember drawing ladies in different outfits for an assignment. I used to even accessorize my pajamas with belts and headbands and would beg my mom to let me use her shoes and handbags to dress up. QSM: The list of things that you have done fashion-wise is extensive; when did you fall in love with fashion? Beatrice: I’ve always had a knack for being coordinated and “put together.” When I was in college figuring out what I wanted to pursue for my career, an aunt mentioned to me that most department stores had buying programs. I knew right away that was what I wanted to do! QSM: Let’s talk about Measure & Made. I have a couple of pairs of the jeans; the only jeans I own actually lol.

What was the inspiration behind the brand? Beatrice: Wow, I’m flattered those are your only jeans…I cannot think of a better compliment. In a roundabout way, that was the inspiration for the brand. I was getting so tired of staring at piles of jeans and pants in my closet yet only wanting to wear one or two of them because I didn’t feel comfortable in the rest. Women come in all shapes and sizes, so why shouldn’t our pants? We ultimately wanted to empower women to “take back their closets.” QSM: Can you tell us more about the FITLOGIC quiz and why you don’t follow the normal sizing charts? Beatrice: Women’s sizing has not evolved since 1958 when the National Bureau of Standards published a flawed study that has led to years of vanity sizing built around the “ideal” hourglass shape. The result is where we are today: one arbitrary size is enlarged and reduced to create all the other sizes. Fitlogic® was scientifically developed and tested over a 15-year period with the entire goal of improving the shopping experience for all women. By focusing on shape and not just size, the patented technology and it’s unique two-number decimal system gives women the ability to experience what superior fit feels like by answering just a few simple questions.

QSM: What sizes do you offer? Beatrice: We offer sizes 0-28 in all 3 of our unique shapes. Some styles even come in short and tall inseams. How long did it take you to figure out the sizing and what was that process like? Beatrice: The Fitlogic team researched and studied 60,000 women’s bodies over a 15-year period. There were multiple fit trials and re-dos as the Fitlogic® shape system was perfected. Through this research it’s been determined that 94.8% of women fall into 1 of 3 shapes. QSM: You also have an array of tops. Do you plan to add a wider selection of options to your brand? Beatrice: Bottoms have been our primary focus and we are so glad that we were able to expand to size 28 in many of our styles. As we move forward, our goal is to offer expanded sizing and inseams in all our products and start to test new and different items.

I am excited to introduce to you Kadiatu Kamara DePyssler an international social entrepreneur. She was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Her journey to entrepreneurship has not been without trials. But she has continued to pour into self-help because she is not a typical 9 to 5 type of girl. Her journey began in 1991 when the Civil war made its way to Sierra Leone, Freetown, the capital city. Immediately after the war, she moved to England with her family. While in England, she established a modeling career that would send her around the world. In 2008, she was crowned Miss West Africa UK. It was truly a dream come true. After her tour, she reluctantly went back to her life in England. But Kadiatu was distracted by the beauty and possibilities of her home country Sierra Leone. In 2010, she opened my first boutique in Freetown called Vivid Emporium boutique. Her boutique carried the best designer fashion from Europe and America providing jobs and helping young women in Sierra Leone. In 2016 she move to United States and opened her first store front after an illness almost claimed her life. Kadiatu is passionate about educating young women. When asked what she would do with her crown, she said “I will use it to help educate more girls and create a way for economic independence amongst young Sierra Leoneans and Africa at large.� Kadiatu embarked on an adventure of employing local tailors to produce her thoughts in clothing. She has expanded to training and employing young African artisans and bringing their work to the international market. They produce apparel, jewelry and accessories, bags and leather products. And have expanded to sponsoring contemporary artists. Kadiatu Kamara couture clothing line was also launched in December 2019. Look for exciting new pieces as Kadiatu plans to open a new store in Durham, NC in Spring 2020. I Crowned My Successor… Now What?

That bittersweet moment is here…after a year of making appearances, promoting your platform, and participating in photo shoots galore, it is time to crown your successor. You do your final walk, adorn the crown on the new queen, hug her and wipe the tears from her ugly cry, and then you walk into the abyss of obscurity while the new queen is celebrated. The heels come off, the evening gowns go to the dry cleaner and get hung in the closet to collect dust.

is no longer on you, and you now join the amazing group of past queens. When I crowned my successor, I was excited to pass the crown to another deserving woman, but I was also sad. I went backstage and wondered what I would do next. I no longer had access to the queen’s Facebook page, where I shared everything I did throughout the year. No more parades, taking photos with the kids…I am very much an extrovert, so it was a little tough.

Crowning a successor can come with mixed emotions. Queens are extremely happy to celebrate someone else but what comes after the reign? The spotlight

What do outgoing queens do once their reigns end? Outgoing queens actually have quite a few options:

RETIRE FROM PAGEANTRY: Depending on where that person is on their pageantry journey, they may retire their evening gowns and watch from the sidelines. Or, they may not want anything else to do with pageantry ever again. Pageantry may only be for a season for some, and that’s okay. Some return to life before pageantry, and depending on the particular pageant’s rules and regulations, they get married and have children.

2.

EXPAND THEIR PLATFORM INTO OTHER ENDEAVORS: The job of a pageant queen is to not be a crown chaser, but to make a difference in their communities. The pageant platform allows a queen to bring awareness, raise funds, or implement a program to address a problem they are most passionate about. I have taken my platform, Waist Does Not Equal Worth (body positivity awareness) to a book, speaking engagements, and a soon to be launched YouTube channel.

3.

WORK BEHIND THE SCENES IN PAGEANTRY: Former queens can also switch their roles from queen to assist those continuing their journeys into pageantry. They may work as a pageant coach, serve as a member of a pageant staff, or even create a pageant of their own and become a pageant director.

4.

COMPETE IN ANOTHER PAGEANT: If you’ve ever gotten a tattoo, you know they can be very addicting. I thought after my very first pageant I would be done; now look at me, getting ready to compete in pageant #4…LOL! I truly believe I will retire after this one.

5.

TAKE THEIR PAGEANT EXPERIENCES TO DO SOMETHING NEW:

New opportunities may emerge as a result of being a pageant queen. Some have used the skills they’ve acquired while competing to create nonprofit organizations, become models, become public speakers, or do work behind the pageant scenes (see numbers 2 and 3). Some have started new careers as a result. One thing that will never change is that once you pass the crown to someone else, you are still a queen. You will always be remembered for your service and how you represented that title. Crowning your successor should not be the end, but rather the beginning of bigger and brighter things, even if that means getting some much-needed rest.

erra Lee also known as plussizemodel_terralee. Terra is a 33 year old mother and a business owner. She is a curvy plus size model standing at am a 5 feet 10 inches tall and proudly weighs 310lbs. She began her modeling career in 2013 after an ugly divorce. For as long as Terra could remember she wanted to be a model, to feel beautiful in front of the camera... well just feel beautiful in general. Because that was something growing up she was told she would never be possible. Terra says that growing up she was always the “big, ugly kid” that got bullied for being her size as well as being the poor foster kid no one wanted or believed in. When she got the opportunity to do her first photoshoot she wanted to be the voice for women and young girls to have someone to look up to who has gone through what she did. She wanted them to know that they mattered and that their dreams matter. It doesn’t matter what their size or shape is, type of clothes they can afford. She wants them to know that they are beautiful just as they are. On and off Instagram Terra is an advocate for big girls around the world. She is known for posting motivational sayings, quotes or just being transparent by talking about the personal things she is dealing with. Those posts are accompanied by an image of herself or a “vulnerable picture” that’s unedited showing her true self. Terra tires to help women feel beautiful in their own skin by exposing her flaws to the world. People always tell her that they wish they were as beautiful as her, or brave enough to dress like her. Her response is always “you are beautiful like you so stop comparing and love yourself today”.

I met James Phelps via Instagram and fell in love with his work, we became good friends and kept in touch over the years. But I always brushed off working with him due to kids, money or traveling; basically my own fears! Beginning of 2020 I made a promise to myself to fulfill my own goals. Working with @ photosbyphelps was on the top of that list. I have never felt more beautiful, confident and comfortable in front of anyone’s camera before. He is on top of his game as a photographer from his professionalism, lighting to his images. I remember the next day laying in my hotel bed I received an email with first set of images. I cried. It’s almost that time of year again. The season many of us have a love hate relationship with – summer. What’s not to love about longer days and sunny weather? The heat. There’s a reason that many people consider it sundress season. The sleeveless dresses in lighter fabric make the hot sun feel more bearable. Unfortunately, we live in a society that makes us feel like it’s only sundress season if you have a certain body type. As result, those of us who are plus size often feel as though we have to cover our bodies to be accepted. This includes wearing cardigans in the summer heat rather than letting our arms show. Women often have various parts of their bodies that they feel insecure but there’s something universal about our hatred of arms. A large part of that is dude to how women’s arms are often mentioned in the media. If they’re even slightly flabby the “bat wings” jokes and comments begin. If they’re toned and muscular comments are made about them being manly. For the longest time it felt like there was a very narrow definition of acceptable women’s arms. Everything else was found wanting and undesirable. This has led to so many women focusing much of their negative body imagine on their arms. For those of us who carry extra weight it’s led to us feeling the need to constantly cover up our arms. The question we need to ask ourselves now is why? Are we covering them up because we truly feel more comfortable with them covered or are we covering them to be less visually offensive to other people? There’s a slim chance that in 75 degree weather a woman is wearing a sweater because she loves the feeling of the extra sweat it induces (with the exception of religious reasons). Mostly like it’s because so many of us have been socially conditioned to cover up parts of our body to feel “more comfortable”. The truth is the only person that’s making feel more comfortable is the

fatphobic person who doesn’t want to see the extra jiggle. There’s nothing offensive about a bare arm. However, we’re made to feel that if our arms are in less than perfect condition then the mere sight of them is offensive to others. I’m here to say – stop the madness! First of all, when was the last time you spent a considerable amount of time caring that someone else had their arms out? Well, believe me when I say most people are spending that same amount of time caring when your arms are out. There will always be haters but most people won’t even notice. Even if they do notice, who cares? Why do they have more of a right to feel comfortable than you? Most people who would have negative comments about fat arms will have those comments whether they’re covered up or not. People who disapprove of larger bodies won’t find them acceptable just because there’s layer of cloth over them. Don’t give yourself a heat stroke just so Barbie & Ken doppelgangers won’t have to see a little bit of arm cellulite. Now here I am encouraging you to bare those arms so you can be more comfortable, but I need to tell you something important. You’re never going to feel more uncomfortable than the first few times you do it. Having your arms out shouldn’t take an act of courage but, due to the heavy amounts of social conditioning we’ve all be raised with, it very much is. You’re going to feel quite exposed the first few times you do it. Then you’ll start to ask yourself why you feel so uncomfortable because you’re not showing anything inappropriate. After that comes the wonderful feeling of freedom! There will be a little part of you that smiles when you step out with no sleeves because you’ll feel like you’re snubbing your nose at society. Stepping outside of the norm isn’t always easy but it’s often worth it. Image a summer of sunshine and gentle breezes on your shoulders instead of a cotton blend layer.
