FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the September 2021 issue of Queen Size Magazine. We have officially crossed that midpoint of 2021 and 2020 is safely in our rearview. We can now take a deep breath and look ahead with NYC and some other places now preparing to fully reopen. I know I can speak for all of us when I say that it has been a rough year and a half. I am sure most of us didn’t think the day would come when we could walk around freely again. Although we are all still playing it safe; as we should, things are at the very least looking brighter. With all of this positive news, what better way to focus on the future than to say, “there are only a few more months to The Full Figured Industry Awards’ (also known as The FFIAs) first Virtual event”. That was a shameless plug! if you haven’t heard already marked your calendars for November 6, 2021 for 4pm, go ahead and do so. Queen Size Magazine will be producing the 2nd FFIAs event and you all are invited. The FFIAs team is hard at work to make this an unforgettable evening for the Industry. We have begun announcing our Honorees and will begin announcing final category Nominees in the coming days. Make sure you are subscribed to our website www.theffias.com and following us on social; links to all social channels are on our website. Thank you all for continuing to support Queen Size Magazine. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. HOW PRUNES CAN FEED YOUR HEALTH AT 4 IMPORTANT STAGES OF LIFE Seeking more plant-based options for healthy aging? This approach is right on track with the 2020-2025 U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) that advocate for greater fruit and vegetable consumption. One easy way to expand your plant-based options and incorporate the Mediterranean diet as advised by the DGA is by adding in California Prunes. They not only provide plenty of health benefits but can also be used in a variety of sweet and savory dishes. Registered dietitian and nutritionist, Leslie Bonci, MPH, RDN, CSSD, provides tips for adding prunes to meals, while explaining how these tasty, dried fruits support health and wellness - at all life stages. “California Prunes deliver fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals,” said Bonci, “so they provide the wealth on your shelf for digestive, bone and immune health.” Here are creative ways to use prunes to support your family’s well-being. 1. KIDS AND TEENS It’s never too early to establish healthy eating patterns. Nutrient-dense foods like prunes can not only help maintain healthy weight during growth and development but also help build strong bones as a preventative measure against bone fractures. Bone mass is acquired while kids are still growing. Physical activity helps develop healthy bones, but what kids eat matters, too. California Prunes contain nutrients like boron, potassium and Vitamin K that help support healthy bones and improve bone strength. How can you get your kids to try them? “With kids and teens we have to bring the flavor, the familiar and the fun,” said Bonci. This twist on the classic PB and J is great for lunches or on-the-go snacking: WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2021 ISSUE

PEANUT BUTTER AND CALIFORNIA PRUNE PINWHEELS Ingredients: 1 whole-grain tortilla or wrap (8 inches) 2 tablespoons California prune puree 1 ½ tablespoons peanut butter (crunchy or smooth) Directions: Lay whole grain tortilla onto cutting board. Use soft spatula to spread peanut butter in thin layer, covering side-toside but leaving one edge uncovered (allowing for spreading while rolling). Repeat with prune puree, spreading in even layer atop peanut butter. Starting at one end, tightly roll tortilla until you reach uncovered edge. Use sharp knife to slice cross-wise into pinwheels. Enjoy immediately or store in airtight container or sealed bag until ready to eat. Makes 1 serving

2. YOUNG ADULTS

Ingredients:

Did you know the bone mass you acquired in childhood is still developing throughout young adulthood? Plant-based eating habits can have a ripple effect for a healthier lifestyle no matter what your goals are.

8 ounces pitted California prunes 1/4 cup hot water Directions: Add prunes and hot water to blender or food processor. Pulse to combine, then blend until paste consistency forms. Use soft spatula to scrape sides of blender.

3. EXPECTANT MOTHERS A healthy mom-to-be nurtures a healthy baby, and consuming plenty of protein and produce supports the health of both. The fiber content found in California Prunes promotes overall digestive health as well, a welcome bonus for expectant mothers. Here’s a quick, easy way to get necessary nutrients in a delicious, healthy smoothie that’s super simple to make: PURPLE POWER SMOOTHIE Ingredients: 1/4 cup diced California Prunes 1 cup baby spinach leaves 1/2 cup nonfat Greek yogurt 3/4 cup pomegranate juice 1/2 cup frozen berries 1 teaspoon honey 1 cup ice Directions: Add all ingredients into blender except ice. Puree until smooth. Add ice until you reach the desired consistency. 4. FORTIES AND BEYOND As adults age, they need to focus more on their overall health and well-being, especially women nearing menopause. Fiber, calcium, potassium and Vitamin D Source: American Pecan Council

7

“During our 20s and 30s, we’ve got busy lifestyles,” said Bonci. “We want to bring the quick and the delish to whatever we eat.” She recommends finding creative ways to add more nutrients, like Turkey Prune Lettuce Wraps - combining ground turkey and prunes in an Asian-inspired lettuce wrap that takes only 15 minutes to prep. are under-consumed by most Americans, and not getting enough of these nutrients can cause health issues. Eating more fruits - like California Prunes - and vegetables helps increase fiber and nutrient intake. Each serving of prunes contains 3 grams of fiber to support good gut health, powerful antioxidants to prevent cellular damage, plus vitamin B6 and copper - both needed for proper immune health. California Prunes have been shown to also help slow bone loss, an especially important factor at this stage of life. For an easy, healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth, try California Prune and Almond Truffles, which are naturally vegan and gluten-free. “For 40s and beyond, we have to think about preservation and maintenance of our supporting bone structure,” noted Bonci. “California Prunes are great for this because of the Vitamin K, boron and polyphenols.” California Prunes naturally contain polyphenols - antioxidants that protect against DNA damage and inflammation. New research suggests polyphenols may also help grow the amount of good bacteria in your gut. Bottom line: There’s more to California Prunes than meets the eye. Check out these recipes and more at CaliforniaPrunes.org.

SMART WAYS TO KEEP TRAVEL SPENDING IN CHECK | FAMILY FEATURES

With more people getting vaccinated, many are looking forward to reuniting with loved ones and making up for lost vacation time. However, budget is often a primary concern when planning a trip. To help make your money go further, consider these tips from the travel experts at Vrbo. Explore a new destination: With pent up travel demand, many popular travel destinations have already been booked months in advance. Instead of visiting traditionally popular locales, consider an under-the-radar destination like Cherry Log, Georgia; Bella Vista, Arkansas; or Slade, Kentucky, which all offer scenic views and outdoor adventures. Before booking, check for any travel advisories or restrictions for your destination. Be flexible with dates: Rather than selecting your dates first and finding a destination that works for your selected date range, choose a destination then see what accommodations are available. For example, doing an undated search through a vacation rental company like Vrbo can yield a wider selection for a particular destination, including some budget-friendly options. After selecting your lodging, check the dates to determine when it’s available or most affordable and plan your trip accordingly. Fly on off-peak days or times: If flying to your destination is necessary and you’re not on a tight schedule, being flexible with the time of day you fly, the number of stops or having a longer layover can translate to a more affordable price. Generally, flying earlier in the week or later in the day is less expensive than flying closer to the weekend or taking the first flight out. Book now, pay later: When securing lodging and other amenities like rental cars, you can often book your reservations without paying

9

the full amount up front. Whether you simply place a deposit at the time of booking and pay the rest upon arrival or split the total cost into monthly payments, this type of option can provide an added level of flexibility when budgeting for and planning your trip. Book accommodations that offer length-ofstay discounts: These days, remote work and school allows for flexibility while traveling, and there are discounts to be found if you choose to stay for longer than just a few nights. In fact, some vacation rental hosts offer discounts for new listings or week- or month-long stays. Vacation rental companies like Vrbo allows travelers to use filters to find discounted properties when searching for a place to stay. Look for free activities: If you research your destination before departing, you’ll likely be able to find free or low-cost activities that interest you. Check community calendars to find events while you’ll be in town and consider options like museums, art galleries or national parks, which are often free to the public or offer discounted admission on certain days or at specific times each day. Take advantage of public transportation: One of the best ways to get to know a city is to walk everywhere, but that isn’t feasible in all cities and locations. Rather than renting a car or using ride-sharing services, look for public transportation options such as buses or subways that are more cost-effective when possible. Also consider a frequent-travel card if you’ll be traversing your destination more than once or twice. Visit Vrbo.com more resources and information to save money on your next adventure. 5 Style Ideas for Heading Back to the Office

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2021 ISSUE

5 STYLE IDEAS FOR HEADING BACK TO THE OFFICE | STATEPOINT

If you’ve been working remotely for the past year and a half, you’ve likely traded in your standard business attire for more casual items, like t-shirts, flip-flops and other trademarks of weekend wear. And if you’re not looking forward to giving up this comfort or your personal style when you return to the office, have no fear. Here are five great ways to stay comfortable, fashionable and professional in the workplace:

variety of styles, colors and features.

1. COZY PANTS: Have you ever conducted a Zoom meeting pants-free? If the answer is yes, or you’ve been rocking sweats, the time is now to find office-appropriate pants you love. The good news is that pants that feel like leggings or sweats, but fit like trousers, are available from a number of brands in a range of colors and styles.

4. A MULTIFACETED BAG: If you’re heading back to the office, you may be headed back to the gym too, which means you need one bag to take you from work to workout. The Kinetic backpack from Athleta features a pocket for your laptop, a water bottle compartment and a separate shoe storage bag, and its olive green design is both subdued enough for work and stylish enough for play.

2. A NIFTY TIMEPIECE: A watch is a classic workplace accessory that completes any outfit. And these days, hyper-functional dress watches, such as those from the Edifice line from Casio, can keep you not just on time, but in style too. The EQB1100XDC-1A in particular, sports an office-ready look with its black IP band and green IP tachymeter octagon bezel. The Tough Solar power system enables charging by exposure to even small amounts of light (perfect for interior offices) and it all comes packed into 8.9 mm case, which fits nicely under a button down shirt sleeve. With a Bluetooth Smartphone Link providing access to the time in over 300 cities globally, you can schedule meetings with anyone anywhere with confidence. Looking for more of a throwback look and feel? Casio’s Vintage line of trendy and fun watches features a minimalist design in a

11

3. SNEAKERS you can wear to work: New low-key designs make it possible to enjoy the comfort and support of sneakers in the office. The sustainably-made everyday sneakers from Allbirds, for example, come in neutral tones like charcoal, navy and grey, and are even machine washable, making it easy to maintain a crisp, professional look.

5. TRAVEL MUG: If your favorite coffee is the coffee you make at home, you can still enjoy your morning cup of joe on-the-go with a sleek travel mug that keeps your hot beverages hot and your iced beverages cool for the duration of your commute and beyond. Those from S’well have a condensation-free exterior and won’t drip, making them safe around your devices and paperwork once you arrive at the office. By prioritizing both style and comfort in your workday wear, you can return to the office fashionably, professionally and with a smile on your face.

Skin Refresh

By Lala Sanyang Hello Queens, Our skin is the largest living organ we have, therefore healthy skin care is essential. When was the last time you reevaluated your skincare routine? If you are still doing the same skin care routine from five years ago then it is time to do a Refresh. Over time our skin evolves and go through varies changes with age, the environment, and hormones to name a few. With aging you may start to notice some wrinkles or fine lines, age spots or more dryness. The environmental pollutions can leave the skin vulnerable to allergic skin conditions such as eczema, and atopic dermatitis. Also, hormonal changes can be contributed to sensitive skin concerns. Visiting a licensed Esthetician and Dermatologist is an awesome way to get a thorough skin consultation and a customized facial service. Also consider your Vitamin sources. Are you taking the proper amount of Vitamins such as A,C,D, and E which are essential to the health and healing of the skin? But before you overload on Vitamins have a consultation with your primary health care provider. Love the skin you are in by taking care of it because your skin is your biggest investment. And we all deserve the Glowup! Take care Queens and stay safe. xoxo, Lala Sanyang

LOVE YOUR HAIR, NOT JUST YOUR HAIRSTYLE! | CRYSTAL D. LEWIS

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen: Praying that all of you are safe and enjoying your summer. Well, I was asked by our amazing Editor to share with my loyal readers of Queen Size Magazine about what I love about being a licensed cosmetologist. I can honestly say that after 28 years in the beauty industry, I am so blessed and honored to get up every morning and still love what I do. I yearned, at a very young age, when I took all of my Barbie dolls that my mom had started a collection for me out of the boxes and decided to cut and style their hair. Some had mohawks and bobs and I used Kool-Aid to color their hair. My mom was not happy and after she calmed down, she told me that this had to be a gift from God, because I had no formal training and their hair was beautiful. We were a military family so my mom would take me and my two sisters to the Beauty/ Barber Shop on the base every two weeks and I would watch how the women and men would look in the mirror after they were done to see the finished look and they would look and feel so much better about themselves inside and out. I also felt good about myself after I finished crying because I was tender headed. I knew then that I wanted to be the person who could enhance your beauty within and help you grow healthy hair. When I graduated from high school I enrolled in Gordon Phillips Beauty School, which is now called Empire Beauty School. I now sit on their Advisory Board and I also do monthly visits to speak, educate and mentor the new students that are wanting to have a career in the beauty industry. My clients have now given me the name of “The Hair Doctor of South Jersey” because I am more concerned about your hair care and not the

hair styles. I am trained to do any hair texture and I have an ethnically diverse clientele. A lot of my clients have been with me for 28 years and I am doing their children’s hair and makeup. I am now a freelance hair and makeup artist that is blessed to work in Film, TV, Print Media Ads, fashion shows, pageants and now having my own Salon Suite to provide luxury one on one service with my clients. I love to also teach skincare, health and wellness workshops because I want everyone to love the crown of hair that we were born with and take good care of our bodies because what we put in our bodies will show on the outside. I am about to celebrate my 29th year in this business in November 2021 and 10 years as the President and Owner of I Say Yes Salon & Spa, LLC. When I look back, I have truly loved this journey and will continue making people feel confident and beautiful about themselves. Last year I was awarded the 2020 Marquis Who’s Who Award for Top Professional Stylist and Hair Salon. People like Oprah, Stevie Wonder, Warren Buffet and Abraham Lincoln have been given this award for the work that they have done. I have not celebrated yet because of the pandemic but I will do something this year in the fall. It still has not sunk in, but I am grateful. It is amazing to be recognized for something that you love to do. Well, I will end by saying that I just want to use the gift that God has given me to serve his people and remind them that everyone is beautiful and loved. Thank you to my Queen Size Magazine Community. Keep the questions coming. Remember to Drink your Water and Take Your Vitamins. I SAY YES!

LOVE BY DESIGN | ASHLEY WALKER

A love affair with fashion on some level is not only Inevitable, but it is also everlasting. It is in our design to express ourselves through the outer exterior, no matter how modest or elaborate. Some may think fashion is very surface when in fact the most simplistic tastes, will still tell an individual’s complex story. If you look good, you feel good. There’s so much choice, mixing, matching, updating, ways to stand out and personally express yourself. Fashion gives a certain amount of freedom to people and allows them to be who they want to be. I think our relationships with fashion is something that we create an intense, emotional bond with. It becomes a part of us. Fashion reveals a part of our personalities before we even say our first “hello,” and it develops and changes as we grow and evolve as individuals. Fashion designers have the best jobs ever as they have the power in their ability to help mold and shape a story for others. This story can make an impression that lasts forever. A designer with the love and passion to find joy in helping others to feel good, look good, and do good through their visions, is a purpose-filled person with a gift from a higher power. It is a love with designed order.

19

When I first saw Kenya Freeman @ kenyamollie on Project Runway season 16, I knew she was special. It’s almost like you could feel her intense love to create something that makes a difference through the screen. So perfectly, she was a part of the season that showcased plus sized models at the forefront for the first time. What an impactful season it was on so many levels for fashion and Inclusivity. It was in the designed order for the lovely Liris Crosse @lirisecrosse and other plus sized models, to be paired up with this amazing designer to show the world how powerful fashion can really be. Meeting her and getting to touch her garments in person was even better. Kenya Freeman of @sylviamollie has definitely become one of my loves in fashion. Here are a few of her designs with her SheinXSilviaMollie collection through there SheinX program. Each piece here plus many more, are so detailed with Kenya’s signature designs and color schemes. The finished products are absolute perfections, and it shows through the collection selling out and being restocked. These pieces plus a few more, can still be found at @shein www.shein. com. Kenya Freeman is also in the running for winning the SheinX 100k challenge. I hope you voted!!!

MONIQUE CARTWRIGHT | QSM QSM: Tell me about Monique as a young girl. Monique: My childhood was pretty good. I grew up going to private schools and was spoiled to a degree. I guess that may have been because my father and mother were divorced at an early age, and he lived miles away from me. I did know I was loved, and I had just about anything I wanted. I was fun and outgoing. I loved selling lemonade and having fashion shows on the block (even back then). Imagine me throwing a towel around my little neck strutting in my little plastic pink heels down the block LOL. My childhood had its ups and downs with death, abuse, and divorces but that’s life as I come to realize. I think that one day I should write a book about it. But overall, it was a good childhood. QSM: What do you do for a living? Monique: I am a Corporate Manager. What I like to do for fun is cook, relax with some good wine, and spend time with the family. Oh and let’s not forget MODEL. IF, modeling was not FUN for me best believe I would not be doing it. Life is too short not to be having FUN! QSM: Who gave you the name the boutique killa? Monique: Funny you ask this question. My Curve Appeal sister did. I was modeling for her online boutique. When I was trying on her clothes, she said to me “Girl you can wear so many sizes from 1x-3x; you are like a boutique killa- the perfect muse for them to use”. That’s how I got that name. I have moved away from that name a little bit as I have been building up my brand. I AM Monique Cartwright. I am that brand :) QSM: In your bio, you talked about relaunching your modeling career in 2016. How long have you been modeling in total and what made you stop? Monique: I used to model a little bit back when I was a child and then we wanted to go bigger. My mom reached out to a major modeling agency in Detroit when I was 11. They brought me in for an interview and then they asked me to exit the room to speak with my mom privately. The agency politely told my mom, that I had a cute face, but I was too big! They said that I had to lose weight first and then proceeded to present my mom with the cost of their portfolio packages. My mom told them that we were not interested and walked out! That was my first introduction to working

31

with agencies. After that horrible experience, I tried out the pageant industry and did great in that industry even though I still was considered the BIG girl. I did place a couple of times and I enjoyed it. I have been modeling hard professionally for 6 years now and still going. I have goals that I want to accomplish for sure. QSM: Let’s talk about this Video Vixen title. What is the story behind that? I want to be an insider! Monique: Yes honey! One of my model goals was to always be a vixen in a video. Why? Well growing up in the 90’s … baby you did NOT see anyone that looked like me period, in any videos at all. Especially as a love interest etc… So, when I was approached to be in a video I was elated!! I was in the video with some other beautiful curve models and I LOVED every second of it! Since then, I have been in two other videos and I want to work in more for sure. So artists and record labels let’s werk! QSM: I enjoy your confidence. What I mean about that is you come across very happy and confident when you speak. Have you always been this way? Monique: Girl please! of course not! Especially after the model agency experience when I was younger. I have always been told “She has a cute face, but she is big”. Even from my own family. That hurts and it does play a major part on your mental status growing up. But God had more plans for your girl. My confidence was always there, just beat down from life experiences caused me to not believe in myself. I had to find GOD again, and myself, and realize that my size does not dictate WHO I am! I have been 275 and I have been 17. At either weight I still dealt with the same type of LIFE BS! The only thing that changed was my age and how I dealt with each situation. As the old folks say KEEP LIVING. You will learn HOW to deal with those situations accordingly. I have my good days when I’m in the mirror “like you a BAD BISH”. And then I have my days like ughh, “everyone else losing weight and yet you not”. Counting back rolls. etc… But the younger me would have cried all day, cussed everyone out and proceeded to eat all day. Now, I just refocus that energy on something that is meaningful like going after another brand, draft up some content, spend time with my kids, find a new recipe or something; you know, grown women ish!

QSM: Can you share a moment in your life when you just weren’t sure about who you were or where you wanted to be? Monique: Right before the pandemic hit, I was there. I had a life crisis and had to make a decision that would affect everyone in my family. I was going to stop modeling, branding, and just leave and go start over somewhere; easier said than done at this age. My life is here in ATL, my career, family and my support system. I had to put my big girl panties on, get therapy to get to the root of my issue and learn how I to get pass those issues without running away. Life throws you some curveballs for sure and if you are not rooted 10 toes down …. whew. QSM: I asked that previous question because when you talk about helping others learn to love and accept themselves, I am curious about what that lesson looks like. Can you share? Monique: That lesson is ME! Just look at me and my life. My life is just like others out here trying to make it and stay sane at the same time. It’s not all peaches and cream out here. My daily routine is crazy, work sometimes until 7pm, kids, homework, dinner, paying bills, creating content, grocery shopping, photoshoots, goal writing, calls with family, cleaning, washing, therapy, and in there somewhere trying to find time for myself and my hubby as well. Modeling gives me MY TIME. It’s never too late to find YOUR THING! And when you do find it hold tight to it! So called friends and family will talk bad about you and make you think YOUR THING is a waste of time and make you feel guilty. LOVE and ACCEPT YOURSELF as is!! Like I said above, being 275 or 175 I have been both and my weight didn’t matter when it comes to life BS but my wisdom and mental status did! QSM: Let’s circle back to modeling. This industry is saturated with men and women trying to break their way into modeling. What would you say are three essential traits that a person should possess to be a successful model? Monique: One is Patience. It will not happen overnight and even now for me my goal list is always growing. Two is Learn from the professionals. Do your research and go take classes from the professionals in the business. Three is stay humble and LEARN. Sometimes people get a little success and start to act like a diva. Honey please, this industry changes every day and you must stay humble and in your own circle. People will talk and say this and that when they haven’t even met you. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2021 ISSUE

Keep your head up high and stay focused on your goals. You have no time or room for childish drama. QSM: Can we chat a bit about the recent photoshoot tour you were a brand ambassador for? Tell us about the tour and how you came to be a part of it. Monique: Yes- the most recent photo tour was for the Jose Pagan ATL Tour. This is my 2nd time being the ATL Ambassador and I love it. I became a part of it by participating in the run off’s Jose had in 2018 for the 2019 tour. I WON and I could not believe I did it. We have been a match made in ATL heaven ever since lol. I was also the first ambassador for the Kia Caldwell ATL Headshot experience as well this year. It was an amazing experience to work with both brands as their ambassador. QSM: Some of those images can be seen in this feature. What message did you want people to walk away with after seeing the images? Monique: Peace- find peace with yourself and go for it! Have fun and just kill it! You can do all things at any size! QSM: Tell me about the future Monique; where will she be and what will she be doing in seven years? Monique: LOL 7 years? Lord that means I would have been in the biz for 13 years. Monique will probably be right here in the ATL living her best life. I will be a silver fox model and working with major commercial brands. The world is MINE so you never know. You must stay tuned. lol QSM: Where can people follow you and what experience should they expect while on that journey with you? Monique: Please follow me at linktr.ee/ iammoniquecartwright.com. It will be fun! You never know with me hun. I will drop a casual lifestyle fit and then hit you with that LiviRae while on my cooking live series! You just have to follow lol QSM: Any final thoughts before we close out this interview? Monique: This was a great interview and I loved every moment of it. Brought me to tears sometimes answering these questions, as you just don’t know how far you’ve come sometimes. I still have a ways to go but I am that one who loves to learn and just wants to go for it. You are truly amazing Tawana and I thank you for this platform and for believing in me!

Affordable Skin Care Tips to Battle Breakouts and Acne

Fresh Faced Skin Care patient

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2021 ISSUE

AFFORDABLE SKIN CARE TIPS TO BATTLE BREAKOUTS AND ACNE | STATEPOINT

Do you suffer from acne or breakouts? Don’t stress! Millions of Americans of all ages are affected by acne and it’s easier and more affordable to treat than you may think.

Fresh Faced Skin Care’s Clarity Serum gently dissolves dead skin cells to firm and smooth skin, prevent breakouts and minimize pores for clearer and brighter skin.

Indeed, regular dermatologist visits and costly medications are out of reach for many. The good news is what actually works best are natural, non-toxic products scientifically-formulated to prevent and treat acne.

3. Moisturize. There’s no need to consider age or complexion when choosing the right moisturizer. You need only consider your skin type.

“An easy, affordable routine can be just as effective as prescription medications or pricey treatments,” says Erica Suppa, founder of Fresh Faced Skin Care, who uses her scientific background in skin biology and cosmetic chemistry to create natural products that help resolve teen, adult, noninflamed and cystic acne. As Suppa notes, breakouts can be caused by almost anything: excess sweat, makeup, supplements, hormones and even “maskne” (acne caused by wearing a mask). Acne lives in your upper layers of skin for 90 days and you need to exfoliate those layers away gently and gradually. To treat acne and help with aging, Suppa suggests this routine: 1. Cleanse: Cleanse skin gently to detoxify, fight bacteria, reduce breakouts and calm redness. To do so without depleting natural moisture, consider Fresh Faced Purifying Bar. Clay-based, it doesn’t strip oil and is suitable for all skin types. It also contains tea tree and lavender oil to help calm skin. 2. Exfoliate: Skin cells fall off during the day and you need to prevent them from combining with oil in your pores and forming a plug. Gently exfoliate your skin with products that include ingredients to dissolve dead skin. This also helps to firm skin and prevent breakouts. Look for products that contain mandelic acid to dissolve dead skin cells and stimulate new cells, as well as lactic acid to stimulate collagen renewal and fade unwanted pigmentation. Lastly, avoid products with coconut oil, sodium chloride and algae extracts, as these ingredients block pores.

39

Moisturize twice daily to balance your skin’s oil and water content. For oily skin, select water-based products. (Look for water in the top five ingredients.) One good choice is Balance Moisturizer from Fresh Faced Skin Care. If you have combination or dry skin without breakouts, select a moisturizer based on your main skin concern. For example, to lighten dark spots, use a moisturizer containing niacinamide or vitamin C, such as Fresh Faced Skin Care’s Enrich Moisturizer. 4. Protect: Beyond sun protection, sunscreen helps prevent acne scarring from remaining visible and slows signs of aging. Select a sunscreen that doesn’t contain chemical ingredients. Calming Protection SPF40 from Fresh Faced Skin Care is great for sensitive, red and irritated skin and rosacea. Tinted Facial Protection SPF40 on the other hand, is good for darker skin tones. When it comes to your routine, Suppa says simplicity is the key. This is why she created the Fresh Faced Clear Skin Essentials kit. This easy, three-step skin care routine (cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize) addresses the root cause of all types of acne and breakouts. For more skin care tips, visit freshfacedskincare. com. By selecting skin care backed by science over prestige beauty brands, you’re not only getting on board the latest trend, you’re likely to experience proven results that last.

Jose Pagan Photography

The 2021 Photo Tour

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|SEPTEMBER 2021 ISSUE

THE 2021 JOSE PAGAN PHOTO TOUR | QSM Jose Pagan is a fashion and art photographer out of New York City but now based in the Tampa, Florida region. He is also a photographer that gives back to his community by lending his expertise to recognized charities such as Milagros Day Worldwide and Hunks4Hope. A product of the culturally rich Latino community of Washington Heights in Manhattan, he has used his creative mind to take the industry by storm with his eclectic art photography and fashion vision. He has a talent that garners a great deal of attention in today’s high-end market. Jose attended State University at Brockport and City College; however, his drive for the surreal and mind bending brought him in another direction. Jose is a creator by blood. His former employment as a first-grade detective for the New York police department was far from his true calling even though it did give him the experience in dealing with people on a personal level. Jose Pagan started with short films and submitted them to festivals. However, he soon realized that he needed more control of his visions. Photography soon proved to be the nexus for his talents. In 2005, he began the “Blacklight Photo Experiment.” It was a unique project utilizing UV (black lights) to capture nude subjects in surreal environments. It was a groundbreaking approach to a age old novelty. His nude art project has transcended the boundaries of art and fantasy. Since then Jose has focused on art with purpose by filming the documentary “Miracle Workers.” A film in which we follow six domestic violence survivors in an art portrait series with Jose.

41

Many in the fashion industry have noticed Jose Pagan’s artistic eye. Soon after his initial exposure with his art projects, Jose has been hired by businesses and organizations to translate their visions. Jose first started out being hand-picked as East coast lead photographer for Designer Original, shooting several covers and many highend editorials. Since then, the magazine world fell in love with Jose’s work. He has been published Elle UK, Harpers Bazaar UK, Elle Brazil, Heart & Soul magazine. The Plus industry also has welcomed Jose with open arms, and in doing so he has shot three covers for FabUplus and Plus Model magazine and countless others. Jose also was tapped as Director of Photography for Moda Mantra magazine. Yet again giving Jose the opportunity to flex his artistic eye in a medium that focuses strictly on modest fashion. With his recent photo tour events in various U.S. cities, Jose has ventured on a journey to be the people’s photographer unbound by beauty standards and false rules. Jose has worked with many reputable clients and companies like Hollywood actor Leon Robinson, Molly Hopkins of 90 Day Fiancé, Dominique Jackson from Fox’s hit show POSE, Vera Moore Cosmetics, Full Figured Fashion Week, FabUplus magazine, Plus Model mag, Livi Rae Lingerie, Bandelettes, MVP Collections, Jose has expanded the tour to the west coast and the Caribbean and Latin America. Jose has also had his tour published in TheCurvyFashionsista, FabUplus and Plus Model magazine and other noted websites and Blogs.

Raise your hand if you too are excited about the world getting back to some sort of normalcy. We all know that a lot of things either slowed down tremendously or came to a screeching halt. Some changed for the better and some for the worse. But one thing that everything did, was CHANGE. World renowned photographer, Jose Pagan, began touring different cities in 2016 offering people a more convenient opportunity for their chance at booking a photo shoot with him. A very smart idea if you ask me. Whether you are working in, or trying to break into the fashion industry, it can be very expensive building content. In the height of the pandemic, Jose decided for the safety of his clients and himself, to cancel his 2020 photo tour. But 2021 he came back with a vengeance! And the ladies were READY for him. From Chesapeake, VA to Oklahoma City, to Charleston, SC and then Atlanta, GA. Then he went on to Wilmington, NC to Detroit, MI. Oh but Puerto Rico needed some love to who he went and turned up the heat there. And then the tour closes out in good ol’ Birmingham, AL. Some of the things that the ladies had to say about their experience working with Jose.

“The experience with Jose Pagãn being his Virginia Brand Ambassador was absolutely beautiful. Hearing women say the tour helped with their confidence was so special and dear to me.” Said Rasheedah Nicole Williams said This is what Wilmington, NC brand ambassador Tawanda Monique had to say. “The Jose Pagan tour was beyond magical. Being his ambassador was more than I imagined and working behind the scenes to make each and every girl to have an experience to remember!” “Jose coming to OKC was an amazing experience that I will never forget, from helping with posing to the insight behind the camera, the entire experience will only help me grow my career even further. I never imagined we could do something like this in OKC and I love that Jose embraces a challenge and helps you find ways to work through it! Working with Jose has been phenomenal and the pictures, well they speak for themselves.” Said Susan Curry, Oklahoma City Ambassador. Be sure to watch out for the next tour because dreams come true at Jose Pagan Photography. by Tawana Blassingame

I Didn’t Win The Crown… Now What?

I DIDN’T WIN THE CROWN.... NOW WHAT?| DR. JANELLE SIMMONS

Pageant weekend is over. Thousands of dollars have been spent on travel and accommodations, makeup, and hair. You aced your interview and on-stage question (or so you thought), and your evening gown was amazing, but not amazing enough for the judges. You may have won a few awards, but you did not win the overall crown. What do you do? As someone who didn’t win her first major title until the third attempt (and just lost another pageant four months ago), here’s some words of advice: 1. If the pageant was recorded, watch the replay, and analyze your performance. You may not have noticed that your shapewear was not appropriate for the outfit, or the total package (hair, makeup) was off. Take notes. 2. Review the judges’ scores and pay attention to areas of improvement. 3. Cry…vent if you must but do so in private. As tempting as it is to post what you think went wrong on social media, know that pageantry is a small world. If you plan to compete in future pageants, you will now be known as the contestant who was very negative on Facebook, Twitter, etc. You are now considered a liability. Don’t burn bridges…please. 4. Consider using a pageant coach for your next pageant.

49

Pageant coaches have years of experience and know how different systems operate. Pageant coaches do come at a cost, however. 5. Don’t discontinue the sisterhood! Yes, the overall goal of pageantry is to win a crown, but the bonds formed with other likeminded women are priceless. 6. Just because you didn’t win, doesn’t mean opportunities won’t arise. Jennifer Hudson and Clay Aiken from American Idol are great examples of individuals who did not win their season and became more popular that the winner. 7. Continue to work your platform. Hopefully one of the reasons you decided to compete was to bring exposure to your platform. Your platform doesn’t end when the pageant does. 8. DON’T GIVE UP! Had I given up after my first pageant, or my second despite how I felt, I would have never competed in the pageant in which I won my first national title. That title let to being crowned the inaugural queen for a new pageant, and once my reign was over, became the director. You never know what lies ahead, so keep going! I know this sounds cliché, but you are still a queen without a crown. Continue to do the work, be passionate, and get ready for the next competition. I’ll be watching!
