Carers' Connection - January 2024

Carers’ Connection January 2024 I can’t believe that as I write this introduction another year is drawing to a close - and what a busy year it has been! The team and I would like to thank all of you who have worked with us over the year for your continued support and for giving up your very valuable time to attend groups, meetings, and events. We now have our latest carers’ survey results in, so I wanted to give you an update about some new things on the horizon which meet your suggestions. •

We will be expanding the Wee Blether groups for carers aged 55+ across more areas of the city. The times for the Bon Accord Wee Blether on Fridays will stay the same as at present (12-2) as that is what most of you have requested. We have also submitted a funding application which, if successful, will enable us to offer further Wee Blether groups to adult carers under 50 and transitioning young adult carers.

A successful funding application will enable us to deliver more doorstep breaks to carers through our Respitality service.

We are in talks with funders about future art projects and will update you all in due course.

Our Parent Carer Support Group at Tillydrone Community Hub has been a great success. The group has been increased from monthly to fortnightly, and we also have a new Kinship Carer Support Group starting this month. You will find all the details on pages 11-12.

We are looking to start an evening Wellbeing group at the office, one Tuesday per month from 6-7.30pm. To note your interest, please contact Teresa Massie (details on page 2).

We are always happy to look at a carers’ focus group but in the past carers felt it too difficult to attend an additional meeting. Instead, we have continued to gather your input through surveys and our regular carers’ groups. However, should you wish to be involved in a focus group please contact us with your details so we can update you about this.

Courses for carers – As a carer, you can be supported through an SVQ. If interested, please speak to your support worker, or give the office a call. Quarriers has a wealth of online training that carers can access, so just let us know if this is something that interests you.

We continue to roll out the Creative Breaks funding that enables you to take a break from your caring role. We also support you with adult carer support plans, which, if meet the eligibility criteria, go forward for SDS consideration.

I wish you all a healthy and peaceful 2024.
