QRI CHRISTMAS PARTIES

It’s been 3 months already and it is a pleasure to introduce myself to you.

I’m a proud Mum of two girls and a lover of good coffee! I really enjoy meeting people and hearing all their stories, which makes this the perfect role for me. Already over the last few months I’ve met and spoken with some lovely members, heard lots of amazing stories and gained some great historical knowledge around Queensland Rail and QRI Lifestyle.

Here in State Office there have been a few changes… We welcomed Rachel McKay as Member Relations Coordinator, as we said goodbye (again) to Maz as she heads off travelling.

I’d like to open this Spring/Summer 2019 edition of the QRI Lifestyle magazine with an acknowledgement of Life Member – John Patterson.

John passed away peacefully in May this year. He was a dedicated member for over 60 years, an inspiring character, and missed by so many people. I recently had the pleasure of attending the Lawn Bowls Carnival in Rockhampton and had the honour of presenting the John Patterson Memorial trophy. The QRI Lawn Bowls Community in particular feels his loss deeply and this was certainly evident in the room. I listened intently to stories, accolades and the incredible

Another year seems to be flying by and now that August is over it feels like Christmas is just around the corner.

In March 2019, we celebrated 125 years of QRI Lifestyle. This was celebrated as part of the annual scholarship presentation evening held in August.

From our humble beginnings as a library for Queensland Rail employees, QRI has continued to grow and transform into the member benefits organisation we know and love today.

I would like to acknowledge the ongoing hard work of all our volunteers (who we wouldn’t exist without), our life members who have all made significant contributions to QRI over the years, the state management committee members and state office staff both past and present and of course our members, who without you we would certainly have not achieved the landmark of 125 years of operation.

I believe the reason QRI has had the longevity it has can be put down

to the dedication of our staff and volunteers with the support of the State Management Committee. And I encourage anyone who may have considered it before to get involved, whether it be by attending member events or volunteering. We would certainly welcome new faces to the volunteering ranks to allow QRI to continue to deliver and build on the events our members have come to enjoy each and every year.

Spotlight on Roma

QRI’s Tanya and Maz visited this lovely town in May 2019. We were treated to a visit of the heritage-listed Roma Station, and were privileged to meet some local QRI members for a dinner.

A great night was welcomed at the charming Royal on Ninety-Nine with members, their partners and kids enjoying dinner, drinks and a good catch up.

DID YOU KNOW? • Average Maximum Temperature: 34.2°C. Average Minimum Temperature: 3.7°C • Located just half-a-days drive (476kms), or one hour’s flight, west of Brisbane.

• Originally named after the wife of Queensland’s first Governor, the Countess Diamantina Roma.

• Roma was one of the first gazetted settlements following Queensland’s separation from New South Wales.

• Famed for the heritage-listed Heroes’ Avenue, which is planted with more than 100 bottle trees. Each tree is a memorial to a local soldier who lost their life in WW1.

• Home to Australia’s largest cattle saleyards.

THINGS TO DO IN ROMA • Take a walk down Heroes’ Avenue • Visit the heritage-listed Roma Station • Step back in time and head to Mount Abundance Homestead, which is the region’s first settlement • Witness the Big Rig’s evening outdoor light and sound presentation, delving into the history of local oil and gas exploration in the 20th Century

Introduction of the Sunshine Express The Sunshine Express made its debut on the Queensland Railways on Monday 27 May 1935.

The consist for the new train was of wooden bodied coaching stock, on steel underframes. The first train was made up of three AAS first class and three FBS second class sleeping cars, a first class sitter, second class sitter and parlour car.

The external appearance of the vehicles was especially impressive and featured a varnished exterior with a polished interior. To complement the train two kitchen cars were built and these were attached to the train

on the section between Mackay and Rockhampton. One of these vehicles still survives in operation as a regular member of the Queensland Rail Heritage tour train (DC/G 1255).

North of Innisfail due to axle loading limitations on bridges, the train was hauled by locomotives of the PB15 class.

The new trains were rostered to be worked by the modern B18Âź locomotives of Queensland Railways.

The through load between Brisbane to Rockhampton was rated for the new locomotives as 315 tons. The overall consist loading for the new train was limited to thirteen vehicles (not including the Dining Cars which were attached between Rockhampton and Mackay). C17 class locomotives

Initially six services per week were provided to Townsville, with three continuing through to Cairns.

Northwards of Townsville a railmotor provided a connecting service. As the Sunshine Express was a tourist train, services were reduced during the summer months to four per week.

At peak periods extra services of the train were run.

QRI SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS 2019

What a night of celebrations!

On Thursday, August 29th, Keperra Country Golf Club played host to the 2019 QRI Scholarship Awards night.

The night welcomed 75 invited guests which included family and friends of the winning applicants, the applicants themselves, our QRI Office staff, QRI’s SMC, our valued life members, 40+ Members and also the sponsors for the night.

There were 13 award recipients, with awards across a range of categories – academia, arts, and sporting.

A special mention and thank you to our guest speakers of the night, Melissa Smith, QR Senior Manager People (Network) and George Tynan from Tynans Advice.

In memory of QRI Life Member John Patterson “JP” Queensland Railways Institute Member 11th May 1953 - 28th May 2019 It is with great fondness and respect that we remember QRI Life Member John Patterson – “JP”.

John became a QRI member the day he started as a Junior Clerk at Queensland Rail on 11th May 1953.

He passed away peacefully on Tuesday 28th May 2019.

During the 66 years of his QRI membership he was a dedicated volunteer and highly respected member of our community.

JP spent decades as State Secretary and Treasurer of QRI Lawn Bowls and was elected as QRI President from 1983 – 1987.

To recognise his absolute dedication and commitment to QRI, John was awarded Life Membership on the 12th of September 1988.

In addition to his tireless work for QRI Lawn Bowls over decades, he would regularly visit the QRI State Office, assisting and encouraging staff.

JP’s, cheerful presence, wit, in-depth knowledge and can-do attitude will be very sadly missed.

Generations of QRI Membership

“I thought I would share some of this past history of the Bowen QRI and my family connections to it with you.

I recently came across the attached QRI Life Membership certificate of my grandfather who passed away many years ago that was issued to him 27 October 1970. My grandfather worked for Queensland Rail (QR) at the old Bowen Wagon workshop that used to be situated next to the Bowen QRI Hall which was located at the bottom of Herbert Street (Main Street) in Bowen.

I can recall as a child attending Xmas parties and many other functions along with my grandfather and other family members at the local QRI Hall.

Grand dad was always heavily involved with the local QRI for many years.

I was an active member of the local Bowen QRI holding a number of positions on the local committee between 1985 – 2001. I also took the opportunity to negotiate the current site where the QRI building is situated today in Bowen next to the Basket Ball courts. I was able to get QR to agree to pay our rates for 20 years which is now well and truly expired. Brian Doonan and myself along with local committee members organised for the existing building to be erected as the old QRI Hall had to be demolished.

Over the years I was involved with many maintenance projects with the original hall including replacing all the old louvers with sliding glass windows which I got QR to pay for (those were the days). In the early days the old QRI Hall was the only major community building in Bowen with many of the local Bowenites holding their wedding receptions etc. in the hall. This hall was originally an army building from WW 2 that was relocated from Nome (just south of Townsville) to Bowen after the war came to an end.

Prior to leaving Bowen I was a Locomotive Driver based in Bowen.

This is my home town where I was born and would still be there today

other than the fact I was elected to my current position, which is the Northern District Organiser of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union which required me to relocate to Townsville. I am still a QRI Member and have many fond memories of my involvement with the QRI in my days as a QR employee in Bowen. I like to wish the QRI all the best for the future as it has provided so much enjoyment for so many people over many years.”

The QRI Lifestyle 2020 ANZRI Lawn Bowls Carnival will be held at Moama Bowling Club, border Victoria and New South Whales.

The ANZRI Lawn Bowls Carnival will be held from Monday 24th February to Wednesday 4th March 2020.

The Capitation fees will be $650 per person and QRI members wishing to participate are ask to have their nominations in by Tuesday 30th June 2019.

On the 10th of August 2019, the QRI State Golf Championships where held at Sarina Golf Club, Sarina. A great day was had by all who participated.

TANGALOOMA WHALE WATCH

Brisbane’s Best Day Out!

Tangalooma Island Resort’s 2019 whale watching season is proving to be one of its biggest and best yet! At the beginning of the season the Tangalooma Whale Watching Cruise spotted 71 whales in two days and with late comers making a last-minute dash to warmer waters as well as the front runners already heading back south with their calves, Moreton Bay is the place to see all the action in the next few weeks as the whale season peaks.

A record 36,000 humpback whales will travel all the way from Antarctica to navigate Queensland’s warmer coastline. Here they give birth to their calves before settling in the shallow lagoons around Moreton Island for a pit stop during their return voyage to the Southern Ocean.

Tangalooma is perfectly positioned during the five-month migration, giving Brisbane residents and visitors a great chance to witness these majestic creatures and their calves as they put on a spectacular acrobatic display in the Bay. With the longest continual whale watching season in Queensland, Tangalooma enables visitors to see these ocean giants in ways never thought possible.

From his presentation, you can tell that Dr Cam is passionate about inspiring others to take control of their health and live a life at their fullest potential.
