This year has certainly been a roller coaster! We’ve certainly felt the impacts of the February floods, COVID disruptions and economic instability. However, the team at QRI are dedicated to weathering this storm and coming back bigger and better.
Since taking over as General Manager, we’ve faced some quite challenging times, but we are determined to meet these head on and ensure that our community stays strong and sustainable.
Our members are the most important part of our organisation and without you we don’t exist. We are constantly looking at new ways to make it easier to access your benefits to ensure you get the most from your subscription.
So far this year we have introduced a new website and online booking system for holiday bookings. We’ve given new life to the QRI Mayne Café and under the management of Katie, a new and delicious menu.
We welcome back Rachael Tickner whose job it is to get out about and visit you all and provide education on how to make the most out of your membership in the metro area and allow Rachel McKay to focus on our regional members. Please reach out to them with your suggestions and/or just to have a chat!
We also welcome Amanda Dempsey to the team, she will be looking after your holiday bookings and making sure the rest of the team have time to focus on their areas of expertise to bring you bigger and better benefits.
If you’re part of a sporting team Ada will now focus on helping you achieve your goals and assisting you with organising carnivals and fundraising. Of course, she will also still be working in the back end and behind the scenes to make sure all membership administration is taken care of.
Tanya will have more time to focus on events and creating all our branding, magazines, and graphic design needs, to help with producing communication pieces to reach you.
We have secured our memberships at Suncorp Stadium, Cowboys and Lions to ensure we can continue to provide tickets for our competitions and presale tickets for events.
I am happy to announce the signing of a new partnership with easyauto 123, where our members can purchase vehicles and easyauto123 will waive the administration fee ($250) for our members. See the back page advertisement of this edition of Lifestyle Magazine for more details.
What we need from you is to tell us what benefits you’d like to see most, so that we can keep QRI Lifestyle relevant and ensure the longevity of our 125+ year organisation, and retain its rich history.
Our Toowoomba, Gladstone, Brisbane, and Bowen branches are a great asset, but we need you to utilise them. They are available for hire for parties, events, regular community group meetings and more. Please contact the office to find out more information.
We are excited to bring you our QRI Ambassador program soon, so please be on the look out for more news in this space over the coming months.
Events are a big part of what sets us apart and what keeps us connected. If you have any ideas on events which, you’d like us to organise please let us know and we look forward to assisting you.
Personally, this year has also been a big year – I got married in July and shared my special time with my QRI family. Stepping into this role has had its challenges, however I am determined to exceed our member’s expectations and maintain and grow our organisation. With Board nominations due this year, I am excited to work with new and returning board members to ensure our success.
One of the highlights of my job is hearing from our members; please reach out to me to discuss any concerns and ideas you have. On behalf of the QRI Lifestyle team, we wish you a great, safe, and happy Spring/Summer season. We look forward to celebrating the impending festive season with our valued members and be sure to stay tuned for QRI Lifestyle Christmas Party locations near you.
Kylie Stanley (Heath) QRI Lifestyle General Manager2022 has been another year impacted by COVID (and flooding), however I believe we are all now adjusting to the new normal. So grateful to be able to travel again within the country and internationally as well.
With Spring and the warmer weather finally here, it is a great reminder to make sure we are all well prepared for storm season as the experts are suggesting it will be another wet summer.
QRI Christmas parties will be upon us soon so make sure you jump onto the website to book your ticket. We are always looking for volunteers to assist with these events so if you are keen to participate, please contact the state office team.
You may have noticed the new website which we launched earlier in the year. A big shout out to Kylie and the state office team for all their hard work in
getting the new site up and running. It has made it much easier for members to identify and utilise the benefits of QRI membership.
The ARI Ten Pin Bowling held in May and the QRI State Golf Championships, State Lawn Bowls and ANZRI Intersystem Darts Carnival were held in August and November respectively. These sporting events continue to be well supported by our members.
You may have noticed the charity Golf Day absent from the calendar this year, but don’t worry, it will be back again in 2023.
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please get in touch with the State Office team. We are always looking for ways to make sure members are getting the most from your membership.

It was a railway romance that started just before the Pandemic began.
January 4th, 2020, QRI Members David Johannesen and Mandy Patterson tied the knot this year, on March 19th, 2022.
It was a love affair that saw sparks fly and not before too long, both David and Mandy knew that it was love at first sight.
Two peas in a pod, David and Mandy
share similar morals and values and their meeting through work was meant to be.
David started at the North Bundaberg Railway Station on July 21st, 1980. He started out earlier on in his career with the railway, as an engine cleaner, and then went on to become a fireman in 1982.
From March to August of that year, he spent his time working as a
fireman and then in the year of 1990, he received a work transfer from Bundaberg to Gladstone, where he has lived and worked now since 1990. He has loved calling Gladstone home ever since.
It was a quarter of a century after moving to Gladstone that David fell in love with Mandy, who started working at Aurizon in 2015, just 7 years ago. After enjoying their first date on the 4th of January, 2020, Mandy and David were engaged just one year later to the day, and the rest is history! ‘Congratulations Mr and Mrs Johannesen’. On behalf of the QRI Lifestyle team and our valued members, we wish you both a wonderful life of happiness, adventures, prosperity, good health and fortune together.

QRI Lifestyle Member, Carolyn Cross, sat down with us to share her fundraising journey on how she is on a mission to raise $50,000 in honour of her beautiful late daughter Paige, who battled so bravely against brain cancer.
Carolyn shares her journey so far: “We couldn’t find a cure in time for our beautiful Paigey, but we can do this in her memory and hope that our efforts will mean that other families and friends won’t have to experience our loss.”
“Advances are finally being made in this area, but much more research is still needed. Thank you for being so awesome and helping us celebrate Paigey’s life and raise vital research funds in her name.”
Each year, Walk4BrainCancer brings together thousands of passionate members of the Australian community to raise critical funds for brain cancer research. Together, we’re supporting the most innovative brain cancer research and facilitating potentially life-saving breakthroughs.
Carolyn shared her excitement ahead of the trekking trip to Tasmania and the drive behind the trekkers taking part in this very special fundraising journey.
“I am excited to be visiting Tasmania, especially Cradle Mountain. My daughter Emily will be joining me along with Emily’s best friend Evie. It was Evie’s suggestion that we do this hike; Evie knew Paige from the time she was born and like us, she was devastated by Paige’s deat. I think we all just wanted to do something to make a difference and in a small way, help other families going through the same thing and maybe do a little healing at the same time.”
“Emily and I have gone on several big bushwalks this year; we stayed at the
Gold Coast and hiked the trails at Binna Burra to get a feel for the length of the hikes we will be doing in Tasmania. Evie lives in Sydney but gets out to the Blue Mountains and other hikes in the Sydney area as often as possible. Emily also has a job where she walks at least 8 kms each shift so she is very ready.”
When discussing the wonderful work that the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation does, Carolyn shared: “The Cure Brain Cancer Foundation directly funds scientific research into a cure for brain cancer. This year they have provided two scientists with enough funding to continue their work for another year. They have also lobbied hard to introduce a program that allows Australian patients to participate in global clinical drug trials. These trials are vital to finding new treatments for brain cancer; there has been no significant change in how we treat brain cancer for the last thirty years, but in the last year several new drugs have been progressed to the trial phase.”
“This isn’t everything they do, but these actions demonstrate how they directly fund research into a cure. Sometimes it is difficult to know exactly how the funds raised are actually used; the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation is very open about how donations are used,” Carolyn shared.
“After Chemo and Radiation Therapy failed to reduce the size of her blastoma, Paige was able to be treated with a drug called Avastin. This was only very recently added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme; this is thanks to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation and others lobbying our Government to have it included and affordable. Paige’s doctors also recommended a drug called Keytruda; this cost us $6,000 per treatment and we needed to crowd fund to afford it. This is another drug that the Foundation is also lobbying to have included on the PBS.”
We wish Carolyn the very best with her fundraising efforts. You can find the links to the current raffles which are helping to fundraise, and more information about the Trek, via the QR codes below. For more information on the wonderful work that the charity: Cure Brain Cancer does, please visit: www.curebraincancer.org.au. Stay
tuned for a follow up story of how Carolyn and Emily, along with Evie all go with their trekking and fundraising adventures and efforts.

Q & A Interview with Raymond Smith. We sit down with QRI Member and Respected Darts Player, Raymond, to chat all things Darts and QRI Lifestyle.
How has your darts sporting career lead to this point?
I’ve been one of the players that kind of snuck up on everyone. I just enjoyed playing and would mainly play social leagues and the occasional Friday night at a mates place to watch the footy and throw some darts.
I played league and ultimately played for Queensland, which brought out my competitive side. I just wanted to win games for Queensland and my mates playing next to me and guess my competitiveness dragged me along to play for Australia in 2015.
Since then, I have been travelling all over the world playing a game I love, but ultimately have never seen myself at the level of the guys on TV and more the person in my mates shed on Friday night having a throw.
I’ve been lucky enough to share the stage with the best in the world and even luckier to nick a game here and there, but it is a very different world playing over in the UK. Please share with us, have you played with your brother in the darts tournaments also?
My brother stopped playing years ago, but he was one of the most gifted natural players I’ve ever seen. I still practice with him from time to time just to fix my technique by watching his.
In the early days, my brother and I would practice for hours a day to wipe away the stresses of life and challenged ourselves to do some impossible things. I remember being called the Bull Brothers at our local leagues as we would finish games in weird and wonderful ways using the bullseye. Although he doesn’t play anymore, I still call him from time to time to talk darts and recharge the batteries.
My son has since stepped up to the mark and is carving out his own name in the Australian Darts circuit and pushing me to be better. I enjoy the nostalgia at times as he is very similar to my brother in cheekiness and humour, so it keeps practice fun.
Have you always had a passion for darts and what made you get into darts?
It’s kind of a sombre story. I was a terrible kid and ended up homeless for a while. I sought help from dad who lived in a caravan park where there was a little shack with a dartboard in it. I wasn’t overly attentive at school and wasn’t able to get work, so I signed up for a special needs clinic in Inala where they helped me learn to read, write and improve my maths. I was good at maths, just not very fast at calculating. One of the support staff recommended darts as a way to improve my addition and subtraction. There was a dartboard at the caravan, my dad had darts, so I spent an hour a day trying to work on my counting.
A few people from the caravan park played in a local league and asked if I would play for them when they were short. I said no and went on my way. A few weeks later my dad offered to take me to a local club for dinner. After dinner we strolled up to the dart club for their league match, the captain put a bottle of water in front of me, a set of darts and said you’re up. I fell in love with the game because no matter who you were, physical limitations social standing, etc you were on an even playing field and 25 years later I still love the game. Every time I hit the board it was a very liberating experience and felt at ease.
As for training, I usually practice for an hour every second day and play 2 league nights a week. Leading in to a world championship, I will practice 4 hours a day over 2 or 3 sessions.
Share with us more about the upcoming tournament in London, UK. The PDC World Championships start on the 15th December and run through until the 3rd January. I’m pretty excited to be going back because I didn’t think I would get the chance to qualify after missing qualifying events leading up to the playoffs. I got a call on the Wednesday night of the second State of Origin match saying I was eligible and needed to register. I thought it was someone having a laugh so I ignored it. Saturday afternoon we are driving all night from Brisbane to Warilla (NSW) to be in the Playoff on Sunday.
I was lucky enough to put together a few good games and win my return to the Alexandrea Palace for my 3rd appearance and very keen to try and replicate what I did last year.
I became a member in 2004 playing my first QRI carnival with James Bailey who was like a mentor to me in darts and life at the time. It would have been only the second time I stayed in a hotel and I remember how nervous I was!
I remember taking a long break from darts due to several health issues in 2013. I played the 2014 QRI comp in Gladstone to test out my body and see if I could play tournaments again.
Dewain Clarke got me a spot in the Citytrain team and supported me through the event and recall gaining more and more confidence as the weekend progressed. The very next year I made it back to Playing for Queensland and went on to win almost everything that year to make my first Australian Team.
I’ll never forget that weekend as most people knew what I had been through and were very supportive the whole weekend. That weekend kickstarted my international career.
Do you have a favourite part of being a QRI Lifestyle Member?
I have family and friends in Townsville, so I sneak in a holiday to Magnetic Island from time to time using the QRI accommodation service, and also use a lot of the QRI Lifestyle discounts with the amount of travel I do for work and darts.
You would be surprised how much you can save with the membership. In 2021, I would have been around $1,400 alone in car hire, accommodation and even been lucky enough to score some tickets to a Reds game.

Queensland state darts team recently attended the ANZRI Intersystem Darts Carnival at Warilla in NSW.
In the team’s events, Queensland was successful in securing the COMMISSIONERS Shield with the successful team of Simon De Git, Shane Mckenna, Zawai Solomon and Theo Greyling.
The Charlie Newberry trophy was brought back to Queensland after an extended period of being in the Hands of NSWRI.
The successful players were Peter Law, Dennis O’Toole, Dewain Clarke, Jacob Lui, Phillip Robinson and Barry Nunn.
Unfortunately, the ANZRI memorial cup was once again retained by NSWRI. The squad of Michelle Law, Narelle De Git, Danny Green, Gary Holt, Linda Robinson and last minute recruit Christine Holt all played exceptionally great Darts.
QRI State Darts now shifts the focus on to our QRI State Darts championships to be held in Mackay, November 11th -14th.
QRI Darts thanks NSWRI, in particular Sue Christensen, and all that helped stage such a successful and enjoyable carnival.
