On a personal note, I went to Japan on holiday in February and had many adventures using their rail system and it was exciting to say the least. I rode the bullet train, experienced their metro system and only managed to have one mishap on the last day whilst trying to get to the airport!
As always, thanks for reading and hope you enjoy the rest of our magazine.

Jacinta Kempin
It may be the beginning of Autumn but it has been a very busy first quarter of the year for QRI Lifestyle. This issue is packed with information for members on new program partners with great member deals, some essential retirement planning advice from Tynans, Mother’s Day ideas and offers and much much more.
A shout out and a big thank you to all our volunteers who supported the Christmas parties at the end of 2022. Your support ensures a memorable experience for all our members and their families attending the events.
This year we have welcomed new members to the SMC: Craig McGuire, Phillip Lubowicz and Dewain Clarke. All three new SMC members bring diverse experiences and new ideas to the board.
In 2022 we made the tough decision to sell our Magnetic Island property. Thank you to all of our members who participated in the survey to help identify where members
would like to see more accommodation in the future. We value your input and will use this information to inform the decision of identifying the preferred location.
After an absence in 2022 I am pleased to share the Charity Golf Day is returning in 2023. This event has been a success for QRI for a number of years and we look forward to continuing the tradition on 29th September 2023. Make sure you save the date in your calendar and keep an eye out for nomination forms.
As a final comment I wanted to highlight one of our long term program partners Ubookdirect. QRI Member Hub Out and about, covering all regions
This year has gotten off to a great start, with site visits in city train network stations, with Rachael Tickner, our QRI Member Sales Executive out and about on-site. Rachel McKay, Operations Manager and Business Development has been presenting at inductions, and for our Valentine’s Day member promotion, we saw Rachel, Rachael and Tanya Heath, our Graphic Design and Events Coordinator, headed out and about to spread the love and kindness.
“It has been a wonderful few months of being on-site and meeting and greeting members and Queensland Rail staff. We have always had a great response from visiting the workplaces and it’s so nice to get to know more of our members and also to meet and greet with other fellow QR staff.” Rachael shared.
The events have been well-received and it’s great to see our members engaged and enjoying our QRI Lifestyle goodies, the delicious morning and afternoon teas which we have been delivering to worksites.
To see where the QRI team is heading, be sure to “like” our QRI Lifestyle Facebook page, and follow @qrilifestyle on Instagram. We often also publish some of our upcoming events in our enewsletter. Our QRI Lifestyle website, www.qri.com.au is also a great resource for upcoming events.
If there is a work-site near you or your work site in particular, which you would like us to visit, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the team. You can email us at any time, via: info@qri.com.au.

Retirement Planning with Tynans Advice More Than Just Money
Retirement can be a time of mixed emotions for many people. Whilst the end of one’s working life can bring excitement for some, it can be a source of stress and anxiety for others, especially if their retirement is due to ill-health or redundancy.
The Challenges of Retirement
There are several challenges that people may face when transitioning to retirement, including:
1. Financial challenges: Reduced income may result in the need to adjust spending habits. Additionally, unexpected expenses can cause financial stress.
2. Loss of identity: Work is often a big part of our identity, and retirees may struggle to find a new sense of purpose and fulfillment upon retirement.
3. Change in daily routine: Retirees may find it difficult to adjust to the lack of structure in their days.
4. Social isolation: Retirees may feel isolated or lonely as they become less connected to others.
5. Relationship changes: Retirement can put stress on relationships with partners, children, and friends.
6. Physical and mental health: Physical and mental health may decline with age.
Improving Happiness in Retirement
There are several things that people can do to improve their happiness in retirement, including:
1. Prioritising physical and mental health: Exercise, healthy eating, and stress management techniques can improve overall well-being.
2. Staying active and engaged: Participate in activities you enjoy.
3. Travel: Take advantage of increased free time to visit new places and experience new cultures.
4. Spend time with family and friends: Maintaining connections with loved ones can provide a sense of belonging.
5. Pursue hobbies and interests: Explore hobbies and interests you may have previously been unable to pursue.
6. Take classes: Retirement can be a great time to learn new skills or explore interests.
7. Join clubs or groups: Find clubs or groups that align with your interests to find a sense of community and belonging.
8. Volunteer or mentor: Giving back can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Retirees can look to volunteer at clubs, not-for-profit organisations, community centres or churches.
9. Change jobs: Consider part-time or consulting work that offers more flexibility and less stress. For many pre-retirees, retirement means “retiring from the present job”, it doesn’t mean to stop working altogether.
The Importance of Planning for Retirement
Research indicates that those who plan for retirement have significantly lower levels of stress and anxiety and higher levels of satisfaction with life in retirement than those who do not plan.
(Longhurst, 2018)
“Retirement: The now and the then” a survey of over 1,500 Australians over the age of 50 by Fidelity International, found a high correlation between retirement journeys that had been well considered and planned and positive
emotional experiences. Positive emotional experience relates to the sense of optimism and contentment that retirees feel and is the strongest driver of overall life satisfaction. Conversely, negative emotional experiences are often felt by those people who may not have planned adequately or have been forced into retirement through ill-health or redundancy.
At Tynans, we strongly believe that a happy and fulfilling retirement is about more than wealth, investments, and strategies. We encourage those approaching retirement and those in retirement to consider these insights as they plan for their future.

QRI Life Member Awarded 2022 Recognizing outstanding members
It is with great pleasure that we take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our long-term QRI Member, Trevor Rowlands, for his invaluable contributions and dedicated service to our organization. We are delighted to announce that Trevor has been awarded QRI Life Membership in recognition of his unwavering commitment and exceptional service to our organization.
Throughout his time with us, Trevor has been a true asset to our team, bringing his expertise, passion, and commitment to every task he undertakes.
His tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed, and we are grateful for the time and energy he has devoted to our cause.
We cannot thank Trevor enough for his outstanding contributions and involvement in the establishment of Gladstone’s QRI, from the humble beginnings of a small cottage to our current QRI Hall on the same location, and also being part of the State Management Committee.
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Trevor.
“I’ve known Trevor (Changa) Rowlands since I joined QRI Gladstone Committee (1990). He joined QRI in 1969 in Gympie. Eventually going to Cloncurry - Coppabella - Gladstone. He was one of the founding members in Gladstone to obtain our QRI Club house. He has held positions of Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, President. He became a committee man upon his retirement during this time he held positions on the State Committee and State Golf Committee. We have always had his support to QRI Gladstone (kids picnic, social cricket etc) but also to QRI in general”. -

QRI Service Award 2022
Allan Halpin outstanding QRI service
We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to Allan for his valuable membership and outstanding service to QRI Bowen Hall. Allan has been an integral part of our organization, and his contributions have been immeasurable.
We appreciate his unwavering dedication and commitment to QRI Lifestyle, and we are grateful for the time and effort he has invested in our organization. Thank you, Allan and not to forget to mention your wife, Donna Halpin, for her invaluable service, and involvement with QRI Bowen Hall.
“My name is Trenton Hore and I am writing this reference of Allan Halpin with whom I have worked with and had dealings with on a QRI level for about 12 years.
Allan and his wife Donna have been valuable volunteers and organisers of our local QRI for many years. Their contribution to maintenance activities, general upkeep and donation of their time has helped ensure that the QRI Bowen Hall has continued to function for its members, the QRI and members of the community in general.
Allan and Donna have organised many events including the much anticipated QRI Christmas parties, Labour Day functions and have helped make the Hall available for hire for members and the local community.
Without their tireless effort I am sure that the QRI Hall would have fallen by the wayside which would have been a loss for our small community”. -
Trenton Hore
“I would like to say how much Allan Halpin has been well respected in the community of Bowen and without his continued support and endless helping out for many years, a lot of functions would not have been possible. Allan and his wife, Donna were always willing to help whenever needed and was always willing to go the extra mile to look after the mowing and setting up the function room when available. I would like to say Allan is a wellrespected member of the QRI community over many many years”.

Embark on your next rail adventure in Queensland
Train journeys allow for your holiday to start the minute you board. They provide a fantastic way to slow down, see and experience coast to countryside, or even the outback. The beautiful, wide-open landscapes pass by as you roll towards your destination, soon discovering that beauty is not just found in the destination, but in the journey. So, take the time to stop, stay awhile and explore all the wonders Queensland has to offer.
Heading way out west
Heading to the heartland of Queensland’s outback is easy aboard the Spirit of the Outback. Escape the big smoke and journey between Meanjin (Brisbane) and Longreach (direct RailBus connection to Winton). Marvel at the landscape while you travel in a private sleeper cabin, enjoying freshly prepared meals in the restaurant and then relaxing in the Shearers Rest Lounge. Arriving rested, head to see some of the region’s greatest attractions, including the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Qantas Founders Museum. Wander out west in a different way - with a little less red dirt and more farmlands, aboard the Westlander Giving you a different perspective on the outback, you’ll discover the natural wonders of Queensland’s south-west outback. You’ll journey through wideopen farming, grazing country to towns along the way such as Roma, Mitchell, and Charleville.
Explore the natural and prehistoric treasures in Queensland’s rugged north-west from Townsville to Mount Isa aboard the Inlander. Travel through the old gold-rush town of Charters Towers and across the Great Dividing Range. Bask in the red earth landscapes further west, through the towns of Julia Creek, Cloncurry and the mining city of Mount Isa.
Discover some of Queensland’s most remote and diverse countryside that most people would never see – from wetlands, grasslands, to the arid
Savannah aboard the Gulflander. A nostalgic journey between Normanton and Croydon along the Heritage-listed railway line, being one of the last great characters of the rail world, said to go from ‘nowhere to nowhere’.
Countryside to coastal
Sit back and let us drive you up north between Brisbane, Bundaberg and Rockhampton aboard the Tilt Train. As you wave bustling Brisbane goodbye, you’ll be transported through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Fraser Coast, Bundaberg and Capricorn regions, reaching some of Queensland’s most iconic locations. Once you’ve reached the beef capital of Australia (Rocky), you can head towards sun, sand and crystal-blue sea aboard the Spirit of Queensland. Travelling between Meanjin (Brisbane) and Gimuy (Cairns), the Spirit of Queensland is a modern and comfortable rail experience, offering lie-flat RailBeds, a licenced cafe, inseat entertainment, and dining service. Stop off and explore Queensland’s pristine beaches, ancient rainforests, and the iconic Great Barrier Reef.
Exploring Far North Queensland is not
complete without embarking on one of the most unique rail journeys in the world. Imagine a natural wonder so close you can almost touch it. Your senses come alive with natural scents and sounds of the dense rainforest –that’s what it’s like aboard Kuranda Scenic Railway. You’ll unwind your way through a tropical paradise framed by rugged mountains, waterfalls tumbling into deep ravines, journeying through 15 hand-made tunnels and over 55 bridges. This experience will transport you back in time the moment you step aboard the vintage timber carriages, as you journey from Gimuy (Cairns) via Bubundji (Freshwater), to Ngunbay (Kuranda), the village in the rainforest.
Queensland Rail Travel’s five longdistance trains and two tourism trains will have you well-acquainted with the beauty, culture and World Heritage sites Queensland has to offer. So, what are you waiting for? Your next rail adventure awaits.

Kilrie Picnic Day – QPSR A Great Day Out for the Family
On Saturday, March 25th, AFULE/ QPSR held the “Kilrie” Picnic Day for 2023 out at Swanbank Railway Station, in Ipswich.
“Kilrie” is a 1924 steam locomotive that has been brought back to life by the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway Association. The AFULE proudly supported the QPSR in the refurbishment of “Kilrie”.
In recognition of the generous support from the AFULE membership, QPSR were proud to invite all AFULE members and their families, along with QPSR representatives to the event. There were photo opportunities on the day and a delicious AFULE sausage sizzle which was a popular event for an early lunch on the day. The event ran from 9am, kicking off nice and early and ran through to lunch.
For the train rides, being that QPSR are a not-for-profit and run by volunteers for the enjoyment of rail enthusiasts and the local community, there was a gold coin donation for the train rides on the day. Great fundraising took place, with the proceeds going towards maintaining the train and other initiatives for the QPSR organisation.
Attendees were able to take a step back in time, as they enjoyed a 15-20 minute train ride together with their friends and family/work colleagues. The Ipswich community also enjoyed a visit from the Ipswich Mayor, who addressed the event attendees. Mayor Teresa Harding praised the QPSR and AFULE for the wonderful work that had been done to bring “Kilrie” back to life, and to be able to be enjoyed by the local community and rail enthusiasts alike. Thank you to everyone’s support of the day.
Dewain Clarke, (QRI SMC Board Member) was also in attendance on the day and said, “It’s always great to see the support of our railway community here in SEQ come together. A great initiative from the AFULE team for helping to support QPSR and getting the Kilrie Steam Train back up and running again in all of its former glory. The train has a lot of history, and back in the day, it
and was the main prison train used throughout the State. You can even see the old carriage details and it really is a step back in time on many levels. A wonderful day out for people! Congratulations to the QPSR team for
wonderful work that they do, you can visit: The Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway for more information: www.qpsr.org.

Our annual charity golf day is coming up on Friday 29th September 2023, and we’re excited to invite golfers of all levels to join us for a fun-filled day on the course at Ashgrove Golf Club. Not only will you get to enjoy a round of golf, but you’ll also be helping to support a great cause.
This year, we’re proud to be partnering with GIVIT, a nonprofit dedicated to channel generosity where it is needed to support vulnerable people and communities in Australia. All proceeds from the event will go directly to their efforts, so you can feel good knowing that your love of golf is making a difference.
The event will take place at Ashgrove Golf Course. We’ll start the day off with breakfast and coffee before teeing off for a 4-ball Ambrose event.
After the game, we’ll gather for lunch and raffles, where you’ll have the chance to win some fantastic prizes. We’ll also have a silent auction with some amazing items up for bid, including golf packages, sports memorabilia, and more.
Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a beginner, this event is the perfect opportunity to have some fun while supporting a great cause. So gather your friends and colleagues, or become a sponsor with all the perks and join us for a day of golf and giving back.
We can’t wait to see you on the course!

2024 Marks 130 Years
QRI Lifestyle needs your help with memorabilia
As QRI Lifestyle approach 130 years anniversary, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate and remember the rich history of our organization. To do this, we are asking for your help in collecting any memorabilia or stories related to our organization.
We know that many of our members have been with us for decades, and have witnessed and contributed to our growth and success over the years.
We want to hear from you about your experiences, and to see any items or artifacts that you may have kept from the early days of our organization.
Whether it’s an old photograph of a past event, a program from a memorable performance, or a piece of equipment that has been retired but still holds sentimental value, we would love to see it all. Your contributions will help us build a comprehensive archive that will preserve our organization’s history and serve as a source of inspiration for future generations.
In addition to physical items, we would also love to hear your stories and memories of our organization.
Whether it’s a funny anecdote, a touching moment, or a pivotal event that shaped our organization, we want to hear it all. Your stories will be recorded and shared as part of our anniversary celebrations.
So, we encourage all members to dig through their cupboards, garages, storage rooms, and send us any items or stories that they may have. You can contact us at info@qri.com.au and email us any photos or stories you’d like to share.
Stay tuned for a special 130 Years event to celebrate this special milestone.
Thank you in advance for your contributions, and we look forward to celebrating our rich history together.

Ray Memorial Bowls Day Event 10 Year Anniversary
Saturday, the 3rd of June, at Woodford Bowls Club, it will be the 10th Memorial Bowls Day for the late Ray Nothdurft who was one of QRI Lifestyle’s valued members. Denise and Ray Nothdurft had been valued members of QRI Lifestyle for many years, after Ray joined the railway a month after Mr and Mrs Northdurft got married in 1979.
Each year, the event is supported by fellow railway staff, who come together to enjoy a day out of lawn bowls games and a complimentary lunch, with some raffle prizes to top off the day.
Funds raised, go towards the Lung Transplant Support Group. The Woodford Bowls Club each year host the event, with both familiar and new faces attending each year.
“I am so very grateful for everyone’s support of the event each year and for QRI Lifestyle’s generous support with raffle prizes over the years, with this year the QRI kindly donating a weekend away voucher at one of QRI Lifestyle units,”
Mrs Nothdurft shared.
“When Ray got sick and he needed his lung transplant, his colleagues all rallied around him and our family to assist us, which was very kind to see. Ray always appreciated the comradery that came with the railway. His work colleagues are still so kind to me now and us wives, we enjoy catching up.”
Denise shared that fellow member, Allan Butler who was one of Ray’s good friends, kindly had shirts made up that raised money for the fundraising towards the Lung Transplant Support Group. “We raised many funds, which went to the Lung Transplant Support Group. It was fantastic to see the shirts be so well supported. The fundraising effort that year was one of our biggest yet and we’ve been able to also spread some wonderful awareness for the incredible work that the Lung Transplant Support Group does.”
Ray’s friend’s Doug Currie and Gary Heath have also been very big supporters of the event over the years and we are incredibly grateful for the continued support of the special
Jilalan Retirees Function Come together to go down memory lane
We had our big function on Sunday 19th March 2023, with a turn up of over 60 people. It was great to see some old faces, friends and colleagues. We saved and scrimped every way possible to make this day go well.
QRI’s donation of the holiday voucher was a hit again. We thank you for your assistance, making the day even more enjoyable.
We had a variety of grades from shunters station masters, drivers and assorts. All coming together to go down memory lane, some laughing at old antics they used to do.
Thanks again, much appreciated, Frank Nield
On behalf of the Retirees Jilalan.

ARI Ten Pin Bowling Manager’s Report
This year we traveled to Wetherill Park, Sydney with 19 bowlers, plus myself as Manager/Bowler.
We had 4 teams of 4 bowlers and each team had a reserve, which was to be interchanged within that team. Teams were evenly based on average. The team performed very well, and I feel that the team combinations went well. During the week we had some bowlers with new PB’s being Nathan Curd 255 and then followed by a 257. A nice game of 210 was bowled in the Masters by Jody Fuller, this was also a new PB.
Congratulations to the New South Wales team on their WIN, also to the competition from the Victorian bowlers.
A great week was had by all, and all bowlers performed to the best of their ability. Thanks, Sydney NSW for a great week of bowling and some very hot weather. A huge thank you to the staff at Wetherill Park Bowl for their hospitality.
Lastly, thank you to the Committee for putting their faith in me and allowing me to not only be Manager, but bowl as well.
Hope to see you all at Caboolture in 2024, and for Queensland to regain that Cup.
Yours in bowling

ANZRI Snooker and Billiards Event A Great Team Effort for Queensland Hosting this Year’s Tournament Event.
The Queensland Railways Institute Billiards and Snooker team had the honour of hosting this year’s 2023 Competition. This competition was a long time in planning due to COVID interrupting the last couple of years. This competition included teams from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and a combined South Australian/Tasmanian team.
The event attracted 34 players and 15 visitors from all states and was held at The Redcliffe Snooker Club.
A big thank you to The Redcliffe Snooker Club and their valued members, for the competition event being hosted at the venue. Moreton Bay Regional Council also provided a grant to assist with the running of the competition.
Trevor Mortimer – ANZRI Team Manager for Snooker and
“A special thanks to QRI for their financial support as well as providing some mementos for presentation night. Thanks to the two Rachael’s/ Rachel’s for attending during the week and on presentation night.”
As a team and individuals, the Queensland Team competed very successfully, with our best being Jim Wicks, as runner up in the Individual Snooker Championships, and Trevor Mortimer being runner up in the Billiards. Newcomer to the Qld Team in 2023, Graham Clarkson also performed admirably in making the semi-finals in both Billiards and Snooker.
“As a team we ran a very close runner up to the NSW team.
The competition has its many social aspects as well, which the Qld team took on with enthusiasm as can be seen with some photos!”
It was a shame that Peter and Sue Warwick, as well as Mick Ryan all came down with a virus and were unable to attend on presentation night. Steve and Joanne Dobbie also made an early exit and were unable to attend Presentation night due to having booked a cruise that left on Friday morning.”
Congratulations to all of the competing teams and we look forward to the next ANZRI in four year’s time.
