DepEd shifts to ADM by KKYLA ANGEL C. TUGADE

As a result of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, in lieu of face-to-face classes, the Department of Education (DepEd) shifted to Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) for the school year. In a press statement, DepEd listed radio, television, online and modular learning as alternative modes of learning delivery.

QNHS OFFERS MPDL Due to the shift, Quezon National High School (QNHS) offered Printed Modular Distance Learning (Printed-MDL) as its learning modality for school year 2020-2021. “We must consider the most preferred modality of our learners. This is to ensure that all have access to education,” said Osmundo R. Espejo, school principal. “All learners must still

Result showed that 34.34 percent favored modular learning, 27.56 percent chose blended learning which is a combination of online and modular, 22.99 percent selected online learning, and 15.11 percent picked

The biggest rise was seen in Grade 11 with 98.41 percent increase listing 125 enrolees versus last years’ 63. An increase was also seen in Grade 7 (26.18%), Grade 8 (12.24%) and Grade 10 (42.54%) while a drop of 18.82 percent was seen in Grade 12 enrolment mainly due to the low enrolment of last years’ Grade 11. To calibrate the quality of self-learning modules (SLM) and Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) for quarter 2, teachers checked and corrected errors found in the SLM and LAS during the Quezon National High School (QNHS) InService Training (INSET) 2020 held at the school’s gymnasium, December 14 – 17, 2020. _ The first day of the INSET was spent by a walkthrough of different assessment tools in the SLM and LAS with Kenneth Arkin P. Galasinao, and Marie Joy C. Reyes, both Learning Improvement FacilitatorsTrainers (LIFT) recognized, as speakers. “Sino dapat ang nagchecheck ng answers ng mga bata?” (Who must check the learner’s answers?), Reyes asked as she

begins her discussion. The topic revolved on the parents as monitors, and teachers will record answered activities. Meanwhile, Galasinao focused on possible assessment tools in different subjects. In addition, teachers tried using the new grading system which does not include quarter exams in an activity with sample grades of a learner. Teachers spent the second and third day by checking and rectifying errors and mistakes found in the second quarter SLM or LAS. “Among other reasons, there is a need to check the SLM and LAS for contextualization of topics. This way, the knowledge that will be gained by the learners will further be improved,. Also, they can relate easily,” said Shermaine Jane B.

Saldivar, senior high school teacher. During the INSET, Learning Area Coordinators with the Assistant Principals crafted the class and teachers’ schedule following the number of Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) per learning area. The interim guidelines for assessment and grading in light of the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (BELCP) was also discussed. The INSET was conducted through face-toface and virtual way following the alternative-workingarrangement set by DepEd and minimum public health protocols set by the InterAgency Task Force (IATF).#

“HUMSS is offered to bring more choices to our Grade 10 completers,” said Minerva S. Pagadut, the Learning Area Coordinator for SHS Academics on the offering of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand under the Academic Track for school year 2020-2021 in response to the need of its Grade 10 completers. In a survey conducted last school year by the senior high school department, 48 of 120 respondents picked HUMSS when asked what strand will they pursue. Some of the first batch of learners are Gladys Joy B. Samalia, Romel B. Morales, Novie Lea E. Orbizo and Hazel P. Ananayo.

According to Gladys Joy B. Samalia has chosen HUMSS strand because it is related to criminology course which she plans to pursue in college. Further, Romel B. Morales said that it is because “I want to be a teacher someday.” The same reason was stated by Novie Lea E. Orbizo who added that it is because “I want to help children who cannot be supported by their families in their studies.” Moreover, Hazel P. Ananayo, a transfer student, said that it is because “I want to be a successful and famous lawyer someday.” HUMSS opened with 24 enrolees this school year.#

by DERIC B. SALAZAR

Mathematics was perceived as hardest with 78.11% of the respondents saying that they learned a little in the subject and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (ESP) as easiest with 56.55% of the respondents saying they learned almost all the topics in the subject in a survey conducted by the school publication for the first quarter of school year 2020-2021. Science ranked second as most difficult with 69.73% of the respondents saying they learned a little on the subject, while MAPEH ranked third (64.73%). The same survey showed that learners learned almost all the topics in TLE with 46.15 percent, Filipino with 42.32%, and English with 39.41% of the respondents. “Naka-set na kasi sa utak ng mga learners natin na mahirap ang Math kaya less

effort ang binibigay nila dito” , Dominador D. Dupale, Math teacher said when asked on his reaction. (It has been set in the learners’ mind that Math is hard thus they exert less effort in it.) Meanwhile, Cheyserr Ann A. Saldivar, Science teacher said that since there are few Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in science, the amount of time for the learners to answer is not enough as compared to other subjects. Meanwhile, ESP teachers Pinky B. Novena and Febis P. Sinacay shared that because the activities in ESP are real life situation, it is easier for learners to relate their lives. In order to fix the result of the survey, Magdalena B. Lugapo, Mathematics Learning Area Coordinator (LAC) said

that Mathematics teachers are planning to simplify the learning activity sheets or modules, if needed, to lessen the difficulty and make it suitable to the learners’ level. Home visitations or oneon-one tutorials through online interventions will also be implemented while still following the minimum health protocols set by the government. The survey was conducted in the first distribution of modules and activity sheets for quarter 2 composed of 265 respondents from Grade 7 to Grade 12. Eugene C. Calingayan, school paper adviser said that the number of respondents were computed proportionally by grade level and section.#

Everyone is eager for the start of the mass vaccination program in the Philippines. Until it happens, there will be no face-to-face classes, President Rodrigo Duterte said. In defense, DepEd assures that the pilot test for “limited” face-to-face classes will only be done "under strict health and safety measures, and where there is commitment for shared responsibility among DepEd, local government units, and parents." Also, the dry run would be done in "absolutely safe areas,” Education Secretary Leonor Briones said. Further, students are not required to participate in the said dry run and may only join if parents allowed them. Furthermore, stringent health and safety standards shall be followed at home, during travel to and from the schools, and within school premises. Many senators backed the resumption of face-toface classes. In support, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III has filed Senate Resolution No. 663 that seeks the resumption of face-to-face classes in areas having “few to zero” COVID-19 cases. “The Philippines is still lagging behind using the blended learning method, which to many is not an effective means due to lack of access to internet and gadgets by majority of pupils and students,” he said in a statement. The resolution reads “There is no substitute to face-to-face classes, which is probably the best way to arrest the decline in (education) quality and to improve learner outcomes.” Many have express that they are against the reopening of face-to-face classes. This is mainly because the virus is still there. Even if we call an area low risk, there is still a risk that

In all fairness, handwashing facilities were procured at the start of the pandemic with only 6.3% schools without access to it. In a recent statement from DepEd, the public was assured that the availability

and roll out of vaccines in the country are critical factors for the conduct of the pilot test. The first bid of resumption of face-to-face classes in areas deemed low risk for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) which supposedly started in January 2021 was rejected. The pandemic made sudden changes in everything, no matter how small or big changes these are, they made a big impact on our lives. But as time goes by, we are slowly coping with these changes, finally having our way towards the new normal. As the country open up to a new normal setting, the thrive for the “Oplan Ligtas Balik Eskwela” sets rage among the students all over the Philippines. How come malls, coffee shops, gyms, and other leisure establishments open up and even allow minors inside its vicinity, without even reconsidering the opening for

face to face classes in school? Thinking about it makes you wonder, what really are the priorities of the government. Students in this academic year is vocal on how hard the new mode of learning, how it affects and endangers everyone’s mental health, and how anti-poor this kind of scenario is. There are different choices on what modality the students may choose depending on their situation, and these modalities were imposed hoping that students can learn or at least apprehend the lessons. The modular distance learning allows students to

use self-learning modules in print or digital format but is there an assurance that the students really do understand the lessons? Not everyone is capable enough to learn by themselves, in fact, most of the activities, and other requirements in the module are complied for the sake of complying. The online class is literally an anti-poor modality, wherein only those who have internet connection and gadgets are able to choose this modality.

DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG

by DERIC B. SALAZAR

Social media is known for being a source of information as well as a disseminator of it. It is especially valuable now since we are in the midst of a pandemic. However, it is not good when utilized for an extended period of time. Utilizing it for communication is fine, but using it for non-essential purposes is not, as evidenced by the way we spend our time on social media. Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, and others are some of the most popular social networking networks. Last year and this year, Filipinos ranked first in the world in terms of social media usage. Despite lagging behind its neighbors in terms of internet speed and stability, the Philippines ranked top in terms of daily internet time spent, with an average of 10 hours and 56 minutes. Facebook and Messenger are two popular apps among Filipinos, which they use to communicate whenever and wherever they are. On the newest OnBuy.com survey, Filipinos spend an average of 102,054 hours of their lives on social media. That's 4,252 days or 11.64 years of your life spent staring at a screen. This can lead to a variety of diseases, as well as greater isolation and loneliness. The Philippines tops the world again for time spent using social media this year, making it the 6th straight year it has done so, according to Rappler. Some users have taken advantage of the platform by creating fake accounts to defraud others. They usually chat persons randomly. They make them believe that many gave money to impostors. They are the laziest and 'wisest' people we've ever met. There are also what we refer to as hackers - those who hack accounts in order to obtain money. Once they got access to the account, they will send a chat message to all (or maybe almost) all of their friends to ask for money. More often than not, these hackers wins. Some also used social media to prank people or spread fake information to the general public. Others may be harmed as a result of this. As an example, some people are using social media to spread misleading information about COVID-19, which is critical to many gullible Filipinos. Lately, I saw a shared video on Facebook with the caption 'Just for Laughs.' I watched it and I saw the misfortunes of different persons as a laughingstock. Why do people think that their misfortunes are funny? I even see pictures of babies asking for money but if you'll going to search the picture, many will tell you that it is a scam. Nowadays, social media affects the decisions we make,

by MAY A. CABACUNGAN

It was almost the final exam, they told us that there’ll be no class for a week only. But then, there are no face-to-face class until now. There is something wrong. The last school year ended with modular setup and the current school year will end with it too. There are many times the Department of Education (DepEd) pushed for face-toface classes but to no avail. Yes! It is hard. It is difficult. It isn’t easy as others may see. Adjusting to the new normal of learning is really hard. Modular learning came to students ‘lives unexpectedly, taking too much time intended for other things. It even made some students sleep deprived. They answer at night when the internet is strong but

they still need to answer during day time because the deadline is fast approaching. Answering modules took a lot of time. Often times, it is because the lessons are really hard to understand. As the school year ends, I asked myself, when will this be over? I kept on thinking a lot on how to get rid of this setup. Some times I also think that this learning style is a blessing in disguise. On this time that everything seems impossible, it is one of the possibilities. It bridged distance and connections to our friends, even making our bonds tighter In this new norm of education, this learning modality is the one holding on for the students like me dreaming for a better life. Modular activity became our new norm buddy.

I know, this situation will not end in an instant. Even if many are saying that they don’t learn in this setup, I believe that soon, we’ll got used to it. Change may happen in an instant as what happened in this pandemic but its effect may be delayed. The long term effect may be a mixture of positives and negatives though. Let us not just focus on the positive side but more on how the negative sides will be solved. If everyone of us, from the officials to the learners, admit our mistakes without sugarcoating, maybe we will win this. Let us not say that everything is okay. Afterall, I know, many things are right and wrong now. But, we’ll get there. Now, it is not okay to be okay.#

which I think is not good. We live in a technologically advanced era. Yes, it may help us a lot. But, it may harm us many times. Our fate is in our hands, whether we choose to utilize social media in a positive or negative way, which can lead to disastrous scenarios. We should use it to create highquality outcomes rather than to harm ourselves or others. Do not forget to check if what you are sharing is true or fake. It is sad that I see many of my

friend post fake news. And when you will tell them that it is fake, they will not believe you. Some will show ou a video from YouTube or a Facebook post which proves their claim. I only engage in social media few times a day. That was before this pandemic. Now, I have to make sure that I see every announcement and every message sent by our adviser and teachers through our group chat. I have to monitor 10 group chats which take my time daily. The additional time

spent in social media might be for the better though. In the end, it is you who will balance your daily life. Spend less time on social media so that we can be more safe. Don't post or disclose sensitive information on social media, as this will be used by evil people to damage you. Be a wise user, keep and secure yourself by avoiding social media, and spend time learning and bonding with your family.#

QUICK VIEWS ‘ANO AMBAG MO?’/ BY KIMBERLY ANN C. TUGADE

We are currently dealing with a pandemic. Restricting the number of people to enter our town means avoiding possible transmissions of the COVID-19 virus. The Municipality of Quezon recently announced that tourist attractions are temporarily closed. We all know that there are quarantine rules and regulations, but how do cyclists get into our municipality and visit tourist attractions? Is it because some tourist attractions are secretly running to generate revenue (I hope not), or is it because we are too relax with the regulations? These activities should be reported to ensure the safety of Quezonians and a secure living environment. #

They said we are in a democratic country, but why does it feels like we are being controlled? Are they scared of what we can do because they know that whatever we are pointing out makes sense? Is there really a need for “ambagan” before you could call out a wrong doing? If you ever saw a mistake or maybe their decision are carelessly done, do not be afraid to call out. There is no need for you to share something because being a wise Filipino is enough. Know when to criticize a situation, analyze every little detail, look into every sides of the story, that way, you wouldn’t add confusion and make a mess out of the mistake you unconsciously caused.#

6 Jour-new-lympics by JEFFERSON C. LAGUNILLA

This school year started slowly. Since last school years’ lockdown in mid-March which causes the cancellation of fourth quarter exams, recognition programs and graduation of most schools, until today, we aren’t back to normal. Still, we are hoping for the best of this new normal. One of the fields hit the hardest is journalism. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had cause d various school publications to shut down. Normally, it is the source of news by the school. Though many events and programs were cancelled, there are still a lot of stories to tell. The only problem is - the school editorial board doesn’t know how to start with only a few resources and knowledge on the new normal platforms. Usually, we hold a journalism seminar over the first quarter which gives us a chance to get the new members up into battle. This is also the start of the preparation for the annual school press conference. But this year, the team couldn’t meet together in person due to lockdown protocols. We have to learn to work together as a team using the not-sofamiliar entity - the internet. Before the pandemic, the swords are the pens but now, we have to settle for android phones as the basic weapon fueled by the internet. The only problem is that not everyone has access to it. On June 23-25, the Nueva Vizcaya Journalympics was conducted. It was our press conference then. Google Meet and Discord was utilized. Many had problems with the internet but many persevered. Considering the internet connectivity of each school, a lot will be left behind. Many will have difficulty in adjusting. Some may not conform to the standards. While others might just give up. The status of journalism in this new normal is at risk. Other platforms will probably be explored. Hence, additional trainings must be done. There will be a process. For now, let’s stick to the plan. Even if some cannot access it due to internet connectivity, it is still needed to inform the learners and the community of the schools plans, achievements, issues, concerns and events in this new normal education. Stories will now be engraved in the electronic highway. Thus, it will be heard again. I know, it’ll be a long run before student publications are established online. #

She takes a deep breath and starts to walk towards the stage, her smile plastered on her face and her heartbeat frantically races her ahead. Head help up high and a sea of people watching her as she receives her diploma. Of course, that is everyone’s dream. But for some reason there will be a pause for that for her. Instead of ballpens and markers, she first held a baby bottle. Instead of tons of paperworks and projects on her hands, baby clothes were stacked in front of her. She could’ve shaked hands during her graduation, but she first held her baby’s hand.

A MOTHER As early as sixteen, she conceived her first child and at the age of 21 she had her second baby. Taking care of two children at an early age isn’t easy, the responsibilities were too much for her young heart. She has to take care of her children and at the same

time, finish the household chores and accomplish her modules. “Dumadating ako sa point na iniisip kong ‘di ko na kaya, pero habang tinitignan ko ang mga anak ko, sinasabi ko sa sarili ko na kakayanin ko para sa kinabukasan nila,” she stated.

A mother may be exhausted from work and from all the stress they have been receiving, their priority will always be their child. All their handwork will pay-off, and it will be their child who will benefit from it.

A WIFE As a house wife, all household chores will be on her - from cooking the food they eat, washing the clothes and cleaning the house. She would often do things at the same time, while carrying her baby she would then cook their food. The house they are currently staying in, wasn’t their own so it is a shame to let it stay messy and dirty. Her everyday routine starts early morning so she could clean their

house and she could prepare food. And at night time, instead of sleeping early after a long tiring day, she would still need to do the laundry and finish her modules until dawn. In her attempt to sleep and rest, her baby will be awake resulting to her being restless and sleepless. “Sobrang hirap para sa akin pagsabayin ang lahat,” she said. It is hard, but she can do

everything for her family. Anything for them. Her sacrifices will soon pay-off, and there will be better days for them. March 16, 2020. There was a sudden turn of events, any form of gathering was prohibited and everyone have to imply to the rules and safety protocols. It was devastating and sad for everyone, but for some people like her, it was an opportunity waiting to happen.

A STUDENT She was then a grade 10 student and almost finished with Junior High School when she learned about her pregnancy. She was three months pregnant before the moving-up ceremony. Despite the situation, she still pursued her studies and finished Junior High School with honors. After giving birth, her family decided for her not to study again despite her will to continue. She was a hands-on mother to her first child then. It took her four years to be back on track again, given the opportunity

of the modular distance leraning implemented by the Department of Education, she enrolled herself and her dreams was yet about to come true. “Nung nalaman kong modular learning, at first nagdalawang isip pa ako kasi that time [ay] buntis ulit ako sa second baby ko pero dahil nasasayangan ako sa opportunity nagdecide ako alone na mag-enroll. ‘Di ko pinaalam sa parents at partner ko, nagulat na lang sila nung umuwi ako at may dalang mga libro,” she narrated. She is happy with her decision even her family and her partner, but

there will always be people who would question her capability in being a mother and a student at the same time. “Tanong nila kung kaya ko bang pagsabayin tapos soon lalabas na din baby ko. Sagot ko naman, kakayanin ko kahit mahirap, alam kong kaya ko,” she stated. She is currently a Grade 11 – Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS) student. Slowly, her dreams are finally coming true. One more year and she will be able to gradute High School, with God’s Grace.

A SUPERWOMAN She is Novie Lea E. Orbizo, 21, a mother of two (2) adorable sons, a wife and a student achiever. She planned out things ahead of her, but there are things she cannot control. She got pregnant, she stopped studying for four long years and now, she is definitely back on track. With

her family who got her back, she will never lose hope. “Maipapayo ko na, huwag silang sumuko o tumigil mangarap dahil hindi uso ang salitang ‘suko na’ o ‘ayoko na’. Sa mga tulad nating ina, laban lang hanggat kaya para sa pamilya,” she said.

“Pahalagahan nila ang payo ng mga kanilang magulang at bigyang impotansya ang edukasyon dahil ito ang susi at magdadala sa kanila sa tagumpay balang araw,” she adviced the teenagers.#

THE NEW NORMAL EDITION

8 FUN WAYS TO CHILL by GLADYS JOY B. SAMALIA

If you’re feeling stressed, you’re not alone! Tired of reading and answering your modules? Take a break, watch some movies, surf the internet, play your instrument or even do the chores to take your mind off for a while, surely you have done anything you can do to unwind and relax so you can finish and meet the deadline. In a research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders on the psychological impact of COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines shows that 39.8% of the respondents had mild to extremely severe stress levels (Tee, et al. 2020). According to Dr. Joan Rifareal of the Philippine Psychiatric Association, stress is a “normal part of life” adding that this could also be positive in some aspects. With the current modular learning due to the pandemic, new normal learners have found different ways to relax. Let’s set those modules aside for a while and let’s see what they do after a tiring day (or night).

PLANTITOS and PLANTITAS

Philodendron. Caladium. Mayana. These are just some of the plants we usually see in different homes nowadays. Well, it is quite a way to relax seeing different colors and shapes while drinking coffee in the morning, right? A plant might be common in your backyard but a gem to others. Why don’t you explore?

Anime Otaku The Promise Neverland is back for a new season. Yes! You heard it. Also, Seven Deadly Sins is in its fourth season with Dragon’s Judgement. Boruto and Black Clover are heating up. Well, it is fun to submerge oneself in an alternative galaxy sometimes. Sugoi!

KDrama Fever When things feel a little overboard, some of escapes to the fantastical world of Korean dramas. From the agonizing The World of the Married, to the series Start-Up which is a must watch for those who will start their business, and our favorite Royal Chef turned Mama in Mr. Queen, one can never go wrong with binge watching Kdramas! Just a question, are Park Seo-joon, Park Shinhye, and Park Bo-gum related to each other?

Bookworms Even if many says reading is boring, many are still engrossed to reading stories. Either it is in Wattpad, Facebook, twitter, or a paperback novel, reading is good to the mind and soul.

Just a reminder! Anything in moderation is okay. Let’s go back to answering our modules after a good night (or morning) sleep. We all have our means of dealing with our current situation, you may do what pleases you the most. But what lacking mostly in times like this is the consistency. Reaping the feeling of achievement when you met your set of goals is sweet. Surely most of us could finish the learning modules. Nonetheless, I’m sure there’s more to it than meeting the deadline and passing your output. Don’t forget, let’s still think of our mental and physical health during this new normal setting. Sleep if you must.#

Online Games Initiate retreat. Launch attack. This are just some of the dialogues in the classic Mobile Legends: Bang Bang – one of the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games on android and iOS. The game features 5v5 battles, simple controls, and more. Other games played by students are League of Legends: Wild Rift, PUBG, Arena of Valor and Among Us.

Live Selling Miners And yes, “miners” is a term now that is not about mining golds but on social medias’ live selling. There are learners who love to stay on live selling. They will do their best to steal a mine and own a beautiful dress at a discounted price. Wash it carefully before wearing, eh?

Music followers Are you a Blink, Once or Army? Apparently, these are the names of the fandoms of the Kpop groups BlackPink, Twice, and BTS. But hey, let us not forget OPM. Who would have missed the latest song of Moira dela Torre entitled Paubaya that caused much heartache to its listeners and Ben and Ben’s latest single Inevitable which they jokingly said that it was inspired by Thanos? As they said, music is a universal language. Listening to music is definitely a way to destress.

Social Media

Lastly, the most accessible and go-to pastime is, of course, the social media networks. But, remember to follow people who brings out positivity in life, look over the posts you share and encounter; and most importantly, as they said, THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK.

The New Normal Education:

WHICH KIND OF STUDENT ARE YOU? by KIMBERLY ANN C. TUGADE

Have you ever wondered, how can sudden turn of events escalate too quickly? One day, everyone’s life is normal, students and teachers attend school. Professionals and the men in uniforms goes to work, and the children can freely play outside, but it just happened so fast, the next day, the whole country’s in quarantine.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) changed everyone’s life in just a snap. No one is prepared. Now, we have no choice but to live with it, for the meantime. Everyone is struggling with the day-to-day scenario of adapting to the changes. There are various sectors greatly affected by the current situation, one of

it is the education sector. Up until now, the Department of Education, the Commission on Higher Education, the teachers and professors, and the students are still slowly adjusting to the setting of studying in the new normal. Few alternatives were implemented to make education in the new setting possible. The modular distance

The student leader There are a lot of students that are leaders inside and outside the school, despite the pressure and the responsibility they have, most of them still managed to finish school while taking part on their organization. A student who is one with the community, the school, and the people despite the struggles of this pandemic.

The parent-student The new normal education brought by the current situation is a blessing in disguise for these young parents. They immediately grab the opportunity to continue studying while taking care of their child when the educational system offered choices on which modality learners will use for this academic year.

The part time worker It is not new to everyone to know that some students apply to work even before the pandemic, so they could earn and help their family, and because of the current situation, the number of students that do part time works doubled. The learners who are usually in modular distance learning and blended learning are commonly the one’s who apply for part time works, and some of the students in online class do apply depending on the schedule of their classes. Studying in the new normal setting is hard and time-consuming. There are a lot of opportunities that people missed brought by the current situation, nevertheless, there are also opportunities that opened up despite it. COVID-19 pandemic affected almost everything around including its people, but despite this sudden change, there are inspiring stories that lies behind the face of sacrifices of the people.

Cigar-HATE by DERIC B. SALAZAR Cigarettes are one of the most popular stress relievers among humans, for both men and women. It relieves people of tension by removing it from their brains. Problems and stressors will disappear as a result of their use of this item, and they will have peace of mind. My father currently smokes. He is disciplined and respectful towards us. He’ll smoke in an area where no one will be affected. Despite this reasons, I personally hate it. One of the groups who makes use of these items is the youth. Students use cigarettes for a variety of reasons, including problems, stress, and others. To forget about it, and to pass the time while waiting 16 percent of teenagers (ages 13 to 15) use tobacco products (boys 22.2 percent ; girls 10.4 percent) consume it. A large number of people have been addicted to it. They can’t seem to get enough of it, their minds and bodies are always searching for it. Because it’s

difficult to end a pastime, it keep them craving for it. It also has negative consequences, particularly in terms of our health. As the smoke settles in our lungs, it has an effect on our respiratory system. It has the potential to cause lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses. It has the potential to cause death. It’s also a waste of money with each stick costing more than five pesos. Despite the high expense, people continuously buy. However, it infected them with infections. It relieves you, yet it causes you harm. Little they know, not only their pocket suffers but also their health. As suggested by professionals, to solve this problem, smoke levels might be reduced day by day or week by week. If a person smokes ten cigarettes per day, he will gradually reduce to nine cigarettes per day as the days pass, and his body will adjust. Having a check-up in a clinic

learning allows learners to use self-learning modules in print or digital/electronic format. The online class is a course conducted over the internet which uses various platforms such as zoom, google classroom, meet, and other applications. The blended learning is a style of education in which students learn via online class and as well as

the modular learning. These modalities are few alternatives implemented to cope with the educational system in the Philippines. Behind the new setting in the new normal, lies inspiring stories of students who try to live with the situation despite having their plates full of workloads and responsibilities.

Home Away from Home

CHRONICLES OF A TRANSFER STUDENT by HAZEL P. ANANAYO

The COVID 19 pandemic made everyone’s life hard, but despite all the odds, I chose to move in a new place, a new environment, a new school, and meet new people. As someone who just moved in like me, life is harder than what I thought. I wasn’t used to the people around me, getting along with these new people is a challenging work to do. I experienced a lot of difficulty in the sudden change of lifestyle I have, my world literally turned upside down. But it doesn’t end there, living in this new place is hard, but what makes it harder is the new education setting. I am still thriving to adjust to the new environment, and now I also have to adjust on the new modality of education. In the beginning of this school year, it was really hard for me, I could not cope with everything, especially with the fact that I had a hard time dealing with the people I wasn’t used to be with. I have no one to talk to, no one to listen to my academic rants, someone whom I could talk to me when I feel like giving up and just forget about school, I have no one but myself. As a student in this tough situation is really tiring and draining every energy I have. Even though modular distance learning does not require a stable internet connection, you cannot still change the fact that with internet connection you can

easily reach out to your teachers and classmates to ask help and be able to learn something more with them. But in my case, as a transfer student, I do not know anyone from my class, and I am too shy to even approach them. As time passes by, in midschool year, I was able to converse with everyone around me. They helped me get through a lot, I was able to adjust easily, and they made me comfortable despite the current situation. It was such a beautiful act of kindness that being grateful is not enough to reciprocate what they have done for me, a token of friendship is worth the try for them. The pandemic made my life hard, from the place I moved into, the new people I encountered, and the new education setting I had to put up, everything piled up, but as I slowly open to people, they helped me get through everything. There is no reason for people to not reach out to those who are in need in this trying times. The current situation gives us negative vibes almost everyday, but we should not be armored with negativity. Hence, we should be one of the people who radiate positivity in the midst of this hostile world.#

is one of the best solutions if you think you’re addicted to cigarettes. Professional advice has been proven and tested. How I wish, getting professional help in the Philippines for addiction problems will be normalized. This is one of the problems in our country. Many Filipino’s are afraid of going to the hospital if they feel like it isn’t a life and death situation. It is hard for us to convince a cigarette smoker to see a doctor. Schools are also taking steps to prevent the youth from engaging in smoking. One of these is campaigning,

which raises awareness about the dangers that cigarettes pose to our health. To ensure that smoking stopped, the school and barangay council also provide rules - the parent or guardian will answer for their child once they are caught smoking near or inside the school. The fight against smoking started long ago. Let us not stop the fight. Rather than involving yourself to smoking, why don’t you look for other hobbies?#

COVID-19 VACCINE: Which is which? by KIMBERLY ANN C. TUGADE

It’s been 17 months since Philippines undergone quarantine because of the spread of the Coronavirus disease and up until now, there is still no definite answers on how to contain and gradually stop the virus.

The Coronavirus disease or COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus which spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or

sneezes. Most people infected with the COVID 19 will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness, however, older people and those with comorbidity are more likely to develop serious illness. Through the days of

struggling with the pandemic, scientist from all over the world managed to create vaccines that could ease the possibilities of being infected.

The Moderna COVID 19 vaccine is developed by Moderna, the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. Based on evidence from clinical trials, the Moderna vaccine was 94.1% effective. In clinical trials, side effects that happen within seven day of getting vaccinated includes tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever, nausea, and pain, redness, swelling on the arm where the vaccine is administered.

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID- 19 vaccine is an mRNA-based vaccine developed by the German company BioNTech. In the Phase III of its clinical trial, results said that it is efficacy rate is 95%. Some of the most common side effects of the Pfizer vaccine includes headache, muscle ache, fatigue, fever, and swelling/ redness where the injection has been administered. The Pfizer is known as one of the most sensitive vaccine which should be stored in a freezer at -80°C to -60°C.

Sputnik V is the first vaccine against COVID-19 that has been registered. The vaccine is an adenovirus viral vector developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. Flu-like illness, headache, fatigue, injection-site reactions are the common side effects of the vaccine. With an efficacy rate of 91.6%, Sputnik V is one of the three vaccines in the world with efficacy over 90%.

CoronaVac, also known as the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine, is an inactivated virus COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Chinese company Sinovac Biotech. A 50.4% efficacy rate was reported after the Phase III clinical trial. The most common side effects reported was injection-site pain, fatigue, diarrhea, and muscle pain which are mostly mild and lasted only for 2 days.

There are a lot of vaccines against COVID-19, and people must be informed enough to know how these vaccines affect their health and body. Knowledge on the vaccines is a great help for them to know which vaccine is suitable for them. The Oxford AstraZeneca COVID 19 vaccine is a viral vector vaccine for prevention of COVID 19 developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca. The vaccine has an efficacy rate of 76.0% at preventing symptomatic COVID 19 beginning at 22 days following the first dose and 81.3% after the second dose. The common side effects of the vaccine are more likely after the first dose which are the feeling of being tired, headache, joint pain, nausea, fever, and pain or itching in the arm where the vaccine had been injected. The official name of AstraZeneca’s COVID 19 vaccine is Vaxzevria but most people call it AstraZeneca.

The Janssen Vaccines in Leiden, Netherlands and its Belgian parent company Janssen Pharmaceutical is the developer of this vaccine which is widely known as the Janssen or Johnson & Johnson. It is a viral vector vaccine based on human adenovirus that has been modified to contain the gene for making the spike protein of the SARs-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19. The vaccine was 66.3% effective in clinical trials at preventing laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection. The possible common side effects after taking the vaccine are tiredness, headache, muscle lain, chills, fever, nausea, and pain, redness, and swelling in the arm where the vaccine is shot.

But it’s not vaccines that will stop the pandemic, it’s vaccination. People must take part on this and they should always remember that the best vaccine is the available vaccine. Despite the numbers of vaccine registered it is still not guaranteed a hundred percent protection against the virus, these vaccines are game-changing tool, but wearing mask and doing other precautionary measures such as physical distancing and avoiding crowds is still a big help to contain the COVID 19 virus and finally putting an end to the pandemic.# SOURCES:HEALTHDATA.ORG, SPUTNIKVACCINE.COM, MEDICAL NEWS TODAY, AND WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

SPORTS A LIFE THAT

Cha Cha Change

by KIMBERLY ANN C. TUGADE

Let’s welcome couple number 1! Along with the shouts and claps of his supporters, he glides, skip, and bends. He will make sure that everything will be smoothly executed. A clean footwork and a powerful poise are what he aims for. Going with the beat along with his partner makes it more gorgeous. Until the music end, they must not stop impressing the adjudicators scattered around the dance floor. And when the music stops, they will still wear a sweet smile.

Gone were the days when he dances gracefully with his partner. For a CAVRAA meet contender from Grade 9 to 11, this pandemic is a hindrance. Jayson Donato, a dance sports contender, started his career when he was in eighth grade. “Noong Grade 8 po ako, nadiscover po ako ni Ma’am Chona (Chona Sabado), Sir Ben (Beniedic Dulay) [at] Ma’am Cheyz (Cheyserr Saldivar). Sila na rin po nag-coach sa akin,” Donato said. He admits that studying and training is hard at the same time. But he uses this as a challenge for him to prove that not only he learns academically but it also

improves some aspects of his life. “May natutunan po akong mga bagay na hindi naituturo sa loob ng classroom,” he added. Since then, he represents the school in the dance sports latin category which includes cha cha cha, samba, and the jive. These dances change his life as an athlete and as a student. Discipline is one of the things sports taught him. From waking up early to going to school and training on time. “Sa simpleng pag disiplina sa aming sarili as an athlete, natuto po kami sa tamang pag disiplina sa sarili tungkol sa mga bagay na mabubuti gaya na lamang ng tamang pagpili sa mga dapat kainin, marunong makisalamuha sa ibang delegation, bawal malate, be initiative in short natuto kaming maging mabuting tao sa sport,” he explained. He also added that because of sports they are kept away from bad vices. Until now, all that sports taught him remains. He still lived with the disciplines from sports. “Miss ko na nga rin eh. Lalo na yung training or daily routine naming,” he said.

11

Due to the pandemic, he isn’t active anymore. When ask about what he feels, he said he was sad. “Hindi lang po para sa sarili ko pero para po sa mga taong active sa sports like representative ng bawat school sa sports. They give their best in preparing and training for the time of competition but this pandemic became a hindrance to them.” Now, he is enrolled at Nueva Vizcaya State University with the degree Bachelor in Physical Education. When this pandemic ends and sports will already be allowed, we will see him dancing gracefully in a much wider dance floor. Who knows, when the Olympic committee adds dance sports as one of the competing events, he might be one of the Filipino representatives.#

The status of sports in this pandemic made us settle more into e-sports. It did not start just now though ... it started long ago. The Philippine e-sports industry can be traced back to the 2000s. Back then, we didn’t pay attention that much. But now, it is inexplicable how big it is. In one instance, I even changed to mobile data because our Wi-Fi seems not working just to watch the live stream of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Southeast Asia Cup 2021. The whole nation rejoice when Philippines TNC Pro Team made a history in the Alibaba-sponsored 2016 World Electronic Sports Games (WESG) grand finals. They brought home a whopping $800,000 in the Defense of the Ancient (DOTA) 2 tournament. That’s approximately P40 million pesos. The Philippine team also beat out a major team at The International Dota 2 Championships

at the Seattle Center in the US. DOTA 2 is a team-based multiplayer online battle arena game pitting two teams against each other to destroy the opposing team's base. In the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, esports debuted as a medal game in an International Olympic Committee-sanctioned multi-sport event last 2019 when PH was the host country. The games involve then are Arena of Valor, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Hearthstone, DOTA 2, Starcraft II, and Teken 7. PH won on the Starcraft II, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and DOTA 2. SEA Games 2021 in Vietnam will also feature esports as a medal event with League of Legends on PC, and Wild Rift on phone for both men and women, Mobile Legends: Bang

SPORTS IN PANDEMIC On February 5, 2020, the Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association (CAVRAA) Meet which supposedly commence on February 24, 2020 was postponed to contain and neutralize the spread of the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the region. An application to continue the Cagayan Valley Regional Athletics Association (CAVRAA)Meet was proposed to hold the activity on March 21 to 25, 2020 but things got worst. The meet was eventually cancelled. COVID-19 is thought to spread mainly through close contact from person to person, including between people who are physically near each other (within about 6 feet). With an event with thousands of students and

personnel involve, the cancellation was a good call. Athletes who are in Cagayan for training were sent home. DepEd said that trainings can be continued in their school. This is the situation of sports during the start of the pandemic. Many events were postponed indefinitely. The trainings done by each team was just a history. Sports activities have been limited or stopped for almost a year now. The pandemic has made a lot to sports. The University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) made a news last September after the training “bubble” of the University of Santo Tomas in Sorsogon. The violations on quarantine protocols led to a probe by the Philippine Sports Commission. In the end, the training “bubble” was shut down and their coach, Aldin Ayo, resigned and was banned indefinitely by UAAP.

Bang, Arena of Valor and Free Fire, and individual and team contests in PUBG Mobile. FIFA Online 4 is also set to feature on the PC along with CrossFire. PH team eyes entry in all of it. The rise of e-sports has been exceptional, with new games and updates periodically. Some games, however, dominate the scene and are more popular than the others. In the past few years, multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games made for android and iOS devices, spreads making e-sports growth faster. Recently, in the MSC 2021, two PH team, Execration and Blacklist International, battle in the grand finals. In the end, Execration won. This is the second time PH won in MSC with Aether Main (now Bren Esports) winning the MSC 2018.

The Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) in collaboration with esports and gaming agency Tier One Entertainment boasts its new degree offering this school year– the Bachelor of Science in Esports with two tracks: Esports Management and Game Design and Development. This year, the global eSports market was valued at just over 1.1 billion U.S. dollars, that’s 54 billion pesos, an almost 50 percent increase from the previous year. A report also said that it would reach 3 billion U.S. dollars by next year. With this rate of increase, who knows, I or maybe you, might study esports. Some of you may also try to become professional players. One thing is for sure, esports is an ongoing industry to watch for.#

The Tokyo Olympics was postponed early March last year and was rescheduled to July this year. This is the first time that the Olympic was postponed. In a recent announcement by the Japanese government, Tokyo Olympics spectators may be limited to Japan residents or none at all. Officials are believed to be looking into the possibility of allowing just domestic spectators, and they’re still determining how many will be permitted to attend. Overseas visitors will not be accepted. The concern surrounding the spread of the COVID-19 and its varying strains, Japan officials believe that forbidding overseas visitors from attending events will ensure the games will go ahead this year. These are some of the scenarios in the national and international scene. The sports industry was definitely burdened by

this pandemic. What happens now? In the last quarter of 2020, posts saying that basketball is allowed provided that players are from the same barangay circulated in Facebook. Many basketball enthusiasts rejoice. But this only applies to specific municipalities and barangay. The order was not from the national. Until now, sports regulating bodies say nonpro basketball leagues are still not allowed. March 2021 opened with the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines. National and International events are dependent on vaccination. Until now, there is still no clear direction as to where sports will be.#
