FOOD FOR THE SEASON

COVERING THE BEST IN THE REGION

RAKU Owner & Executive Chef, Hao Chen

RAKU DINING

CANBERRA CENTRE

With no introduction necessary, the iconic Japanese restaurant RAKU sits at the heart of fine dining in Canberra. At the helm of this renowned establishment is Executive Chef and RAKU founder Chef Hao Chen, who arrived in Australia in 2002. Hao Chen began his culinary path working as a chef at the Four Seasons hotel in Shanghai, then at the Four Seasons Sydney, and later, TOKO restaurant in Surry Hills, Sydney. From there, his talent and dedication to the art of Japanese cuisine earned him an invitation to Canberra’s Bunda Street in 2017 as an offer to take over a vacant space within the shopping centre precinct.

Embracing this new chapter, Chef Hao Chen made the bold decision to move his family to Canberra and devoted an entire year to developing RAKU from the ground up, carefully curating its brand identity, crafting the menu, and cultivating the ambiance that would come to define the restaurant. The shift from Sydney’s fast-paced CBD to Canberra’s colder, quieter environment was a personal and professional leap. Initially, there was great uncertainty surrounding the traditionally unorthodox notion of opening a fine dining restaurant amidst a shopping centre precinct. However, this decision ultimately paid off and allowed Hao Chen to fulfil what he calls “a chef’s ultimate dream”; to own a restaurant built with intention, where you can share your culinary artistry daily.

From the moment you step into RAKU, there’s an unmistakable feeling of fine dining opulence — a seamless harmony between design and cuisine where no detail has been spared. Every element of the space has been thoughtfully considered to elevate the guest experience. Being of Chinese origin, Chef Hao Chen was determined to take a different path by exploring and honouring the tradition and artistry of Japanese cuisine, while adding his own flair and culinary elements. In doing so, he poured his creativity into every aspect of the restaurant from the food to the atmosphere itself. For the fit-out, Hao Chen envisioned a space that would exude elegance and transport diners to a setting reminiscent of a Japanese film. The result is a space that feels both elevated and intimate. The decision to incorporate booths enhances this intimacy, giving guests the chance to enjoy a memorable meal in semi-private comfort. For those seeking an even more exclusive experience, RAKU also features a private dining room within an elegant, enclosed space perfect for special occasions.

RAKU DINING

The restaurant’s interior design was brought to life by a Japanese designer, with a focus on authenticity and detail. Perhaps the most striking feature is the use of specially crafted paper to build some of the walls within the restaurant. This paper is traditionally seen within Japanese temples and it has been sourced straight from Kyoto, Japan. These subtle, yet powerful design choices bring an unmistakable sense of place, quite literally transporting guests into the centre of Japanese architecture and ambiance.

This same precision and care carries through to the heart of RAKU - the cuisine. For Chef Hao Chen, dining is not a passive experience but a multisensory journey. Each dish is designed to engage all the senses, with a philosophy that the first taste happens with the eyes. His artistic presentation and masterful composition of ingredients ensure that every plate is both visually and aromatically captivating.

This philosophy is exemplified in Chef Hao Chen’s signature nigiri selection. While traditional Japanese nigiri is minimalist by nature — sushi rice topped with finely sliced sashimi and often finished with little more than a brush of soy, Chef Hao has chosen to respectfully depart from this simplicity, opting instead for thoughtful reinvention. By incorporating luxurious ingredients like foie gras and truffle, he elevates each bite into something

layered, surprising, and unforgettable. The result is a tasting experience that still honours the essence of nigiri, while pushing the boundaries of what it can be.Each piece in the selection is a carefully composed fusion of texture and taste, designed to leave a lasting impression on the palate. The scampi nigiri, for example, takes a bold turn with the addition of soy jelly, rich foie gras, and a delicate drizzle of truffle oil — a decadent blend that’s as refined as it is indulgent.

Chef Hao Chen’s philosophy is centred around sourcing the finest local ingredients and incorporating the utmost quality into each dish. A wonderful example of this is the unparalleled freshness of the RAKU oysters. Sourced straight from a Merimbula oyster farm, their freshness speaks for itself, carrying the clean, natural taste of the sea. The secret to this dish is in Hao Chen’s dressing — a simple but precise mix of soy sauce, vinegar, and a pinch of sugar that adds a subtle sweetness and perfectly balances the oysters’ briny flavour.

Another of Hao Chen’s specialties is the dragon Maki roll, a unique blend of prawn tempura and kimchi topped by freshly seared, melt-in-your mouth wagyu beef, drizzled with a delicately sweet amiyaki sauce. The dish defies convention by combining meat and fish in a single bite, creating a fusion that is rare in traditional Japanese cuisine.

Can’t decide what to order? Chef Hao Chen’s carefully curated tasting menus give guests the chance to experience a bit of everything in a balanced and sophisticated manner. The menus are thoughtfully composed of roughly 30% raw seafood, 30% cooked sushi or tempura, and the remainder made up of more substantial meat dishes and carefully chosen sides. This progression mirrors the flow of a traditional Japanese meal or an omakase session, where lighter, cold dishes lead into warmer, richer and more substantial courses. It’s a deliberate and considered approach that showcases the depth and precision of Japanese cooking, while also reflecting Chef Hao’s signature style.

Among the many standouts on the tasting menus, Chef Hao is particularly proud of the scallop dish — a delicate balance of seared scallops crowned with a small tower of pickled green apple, garlic mayonnaise, and jalapeño. The presentation is striking and the flavour profile reveals layers of complexity and harmony. Another highlight is the salmon tartare, a dish that exemplifies Chef Hao’s flair for design. Served in the centre of a gold dish, the tartare is flecked with black caviar and paired with crisp squid ink crackers, offering both a contrast in texture and a bold, monochromatic visual experience.

It’s no secret that Chef Hao Chen has mastered the art of truffle pairing, seamlessly integrating this prized ingredient into many staple dishes on the RAKU menu. He believes that truffles are a prized ingredient that, when used correctly, pair beautifully with Italian, French, and Japanese food, particularly seafood.

At RAKU, truffle often appears in maki rolls and nigiri, where its earthy aroma enhances the natural sweetness of the fish rather than overshadowing it. Chef Hao’s favourite way to showcase truffle is through sushi, allowing the ingredient to shine in its purest form. Each year, Hao Chen showcases this skill during his annual truffle dinner, an exclusive event which celebrates Chef Hao’s creative truffle pairings and offers guests a unique opportunity to experience the versatility of truffle in Japanese fine dining. Importantly, Chef Hao uses locally sourced Tera Preta truffles from Braidwood, firmly believing in supporting the region’s growers and showcasing the world-class produce available on our doorstep.

RAKU DINING

Since opening its doors, RAKU has marked a number of memorable milestones that reflect its growing reputation as a standout in Australia’s fine dining scene. One such highlight was when international music star Post Malone wandered into RAKU on the evening before his headline performance at Spilt Milk where he met Chef Hao Chen and spent the night indulging in RAKU’s premium dishes, with the sake flowing until 4am. The two shared stories from how Post made his first million to heartfelt memories of his family. Generous, down-to-earth, and clearly impressed by the cuisine, Post Malone’s visit became an iconic moment in RAKU’s story, cementing the restaurant’s place as a destination for world-class food and hospitality. Chef Hao Chen has also welcomed other notable guests to the restaurant such as Keith Urban, who, like many others, came for the food and stayed for the experience.

Looking ahead, Chef Hao Chen has no intention of slowing down. Over the course of his career, he has crossed paths with individuals from all walks of life and industries — from musicians and politicians to creatives, business leaders and hospitality icons, many of whom have inspired his next creative venture to produce his own book. Unlike the common perception in Sydney that Canberra can be quiet or uneventful, Chef Hao sees the city as home to some of the most interesting and thoughtful individuals he’s ever met. This has sparked the idea for his upcoming book, set to launch later this year. For his venture, Chef Hao plans to invite a selection of prominent figures from the Canberra community to join him in the kitchen to create a dish that is reflective of their story and personality. These personal recipes will be featured alongside interviews and advice for younger generations blending food, storytelling, and community into a well-curated novel.

Alongside the book, the Canberra Japanese fine dining scene is set to grow even further with the opening of Chef Hao’s next restaurant. Aptly named Hao, the restaurant promises an entirely new experience, both visually and gastronomically. Located in a striking, temple-like structure on Parkes Way, the space will offer a darker, more traditional Japanese aesthetic that is sleek, sexy, and luxuriously intimate. The restaurant will feature over 950 individual lights, installed to create a truly atmospheric experience. With Hao, he aims to deliver a new kind of Japanese dining rooted in tradition but elevated with the same artistry, vision, and attention to detail that has made RAKU so iconic.

RAKU’s menu also continues to evolve with exciting new additions that showcase Chef Hao Chen’s creativity. On the Raw menu, guests can now experience a standout venison dish, a rare delicacy on the Canberra dining scene. Served on crisp baby cucumber and finished with miso mayo, pickled capers, and a drizzle of truffle oil, this creation steps away from the more traditional raw seafood offerings, applying the same level of precision and artistry used in sashimi to a different kind of protein. For those with a sweet tooth, the new lemon dessert is a must-try. It’s a delicate blend of citrus elements, with lemon and yuzu layered over a salted white chocolate and almond crumb. Refreshing and indulgent, it’s the perfect finish to a meal at RAKU. As Chef Hao Chen’s culinary vision continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: his dedication to pushing boundaries and crafting spaces where food, people, and culture come together in unforgettable ways.

RED HILL LUNETTA

Canberra’s dining scene ascends to new heights with the arrival of Lunetta and Lunetta Trattoria; two establishments offering a premier Italian-inspired dining experience, housed in a modernist icon, with views that soar above Canberra.

On November 1 2024, three years after the sale of one of Canberra’s most iconic mid-century landmarks: 60 Red Hill Drive, Lunetta opened its doors. Now owned by award-winning restaurateur Tracy Keeley and her sons Matthew and Nicholas, the much-loved Red Hill site has entered a bold new chapter.

The Red Hill site has long been one of the city’s most recognised locations. Originally built in 1963, the structure sits perched on Red Hill overlooking the capital, just minutes from the city centre. For decades, it has been a standout on the skyline — and now, it is set to become one of Canberra’s most iconic premier dining destinations, where guests can enjoy italian-inspired cuisine in a space that offers both perspective and connection.

The reimagined space hosts two restaurants: Lunetta, an elevated dining experience on the first floor, and Lunetta Trattoria, a relaxed neighbourhood bar on the ground floor.

The carefully curated Wine lists reflect the style and ambience of both venues with Lunetta offering an extensive list covering all global regions while the Trattoria will focus more on a small rotating list leaning towards Italian wines that are reflective of their region.

The vision behind Lunetta is shaped by the Keeley family's deep roots in Canberra's hospitality scene. Tracy Keeley is best known for transforming the National Library Café, Bookplate, into a sought-after dining destination between 2014 and 2021, and for revitalising the Australian National Botanic Garden’s eatery, Pollen, into an award-winning venue. Working alongside her are sons Nicholas and Matthew Keeley, who bring a creative, detaildriven approach to all aspects of the business — with a strong focus on local producers, makers and suppliers.

In the kitchen, British-born Head Chef Rebbettes brings over 15 years of experience from some of Australia’s most respected restaurants, including roles at Sepia, Flying Fish, EST., and Café Paci. As former Sous Chef at Saint Peter and Executive Chef at Mona Farm, he brings a refined yet elemental cooking style, grounded in sustainability, provenance, seasonal produce and mastering the art of cooking with fire.

LUNETTA

Lunetta is located on the top floor with sweeping, 360 views of the Nation’s Capital offering an elevated and intimate dining atmosphere. Seating 82 people and offering a semi-private dining space for up to 10 guests, Lunetta will also be available for exclusive restaurant book-outs, offering a fully seated dining experience.

At Lunetta, the menu boasts a refined selection of elegant, seasonal combinations that honour both Italian tradition and local produce. Some highlights include the Prosciutto di Parma, served with gorgonzola dolce, candied walnut, and crisp grissini. This dish pairs excellently with the Stracciatella layered with sweet persimmon, roasted Jerusalem artichoke, and aged balsamic, offering a balance of richness and brightness.

For mains, you cannot go past the Murray cod with creamy fresh polenta, charred corn, and mustard greens is a must-try. To finish, a house-made sorbet of ambrosia strawberry and Italian rockmelon captures the essence of late summer in a single, refreshing spoonful.

Not sure where to start? The chef has you covered with two premium set menu offerrings where you can indulge in the best that Lunetta has to offer. For an unforgettably indulgent experience, Lunetta offers a refined caviar service, featuring Ars Italica Royal Oscietra — a delicacy rarely seen on local menus.

Served traditionally with condiments in 30g or 50g portions, the caviar is presented with ceremony and care. Diners can also opt for a caviar “bump” paired with frozen vodka or nestled atop a crisp fried guanciale gnocchi — a playful yet luxurious twist that reflects Lunetta’s balance of tradition and contemporary flair.

LUNETTA TRATTORIA

Inspired by Italian traditions, Lunetta Trattoria offers a fresh take on dining in Canberra, creating a lively and welcoming space for everyone. In true Italian spirit, the Trattoria is a place where family, friends and lovers can come together over great food and wine in a relaxed setting.

Lunetta Trattoria seamlessly blends classic influences with a modern edge. Whether you're dropping in for a casual bite or celebrating a special occasion, their team is committed to delivering memorable experiences through warm hospitality and the finest locally sourced ingredients. The Trattoria seats 84 people and offers both inside and outside dining options.

The Lunetta Trattoria menu leans into bold, generous flavours, with standout dishes like woodfired Lumache alla Vodka with spicy nduja, and Jervis Bay mussels finished with fragrant chilli oil. The Gnocchi Fritto pairs white anchovy with the sweetness of Brae garden honey and a snowfall of pecorino romano. To finish, a delicate honey

panna cotta — crowned with local figs, shards of honeycomb and candied walnut captures the simple beauty of the season. With sweeping views, a modernist setting and a menu grounded in seasonality and soul, Lunetta and Lunetta Trattoria mark a new chapter in Canberra’s dining story. Whether it’s fire-kissed seafood upstairs or a long lunch shared over wood-fired pasta below, the Keeley family’s latest venture sets a new benchmark — offering not just a meal, but a sense of place, care and connection at every table.

“Above, Lunetta embraces the sky, with the elevation providing an immersive space among the treetops, hovering between Canberra below and the sky above but grounded in a fresh, local and considered Italian-inspired menu cooked with fire.”

“Below Lunetta Trattoria is anchored by warm, grounding tones that reinforce its connection to the earth – reflected in the offering with this energetic, neighbourhood all day trattoria serving Italian antipasti and hearty wood-fired dishes.”

NICK O'LEARY WINERY

HEYWOOD

The Nick O’Leary story is one of passion, dedication, and a deep connection to the Canberra wine region. Since 2007, Nick has been crafting wines that have garnered national recognition and numerous awards, solidifying his place as one of the region’s most celebrated winemakers. In 2016, the Heywood Estate in Wallaroo became the home base of his hands-on operation, where he meticulously oversees every step of the winemaking process. In June 2023, Nick and his team took an exciting new step by opening a cellar door at Heywood, creating a space where people can experience his wines in the very place they are made.

Unlike many cellar doors that serve as a launching pad for new wineries, Nick’s goal was different, he wanted a home for his wine, a place where both connoisseurs and casual visitors could immerse themselves in the experience. Set in a beautifully transformed homestead, the Heywood cellar door offers museum releases, award-winning vintages, and exciting new releases. But the experience goes beyond wine. The venue features a thoughtfully curated beer list, a cocktail bar, and a restaurant, focusing on local and independent producers. Whether you’re indulging in a wine paired dining experience, enjoying a charcuterie board, or exploring creative cocktails, Heywood offers something special for every visitor.

Among their many standout offerings, one of their most popular wines is the Heywood Riesling, a single-vineyard expression from their property, Heywood in Wallaroo. Sourced directly from the 25-year-old vines on the estate, this wine is a true reflection of their home block’s unique terroir.

The Riesling is made with delicate care with the fruit being handpicked and whole bunch pressed on a slow Champagne cycle for four hours. This refined process ensures a delicate extraction that preserves purity and aromatics. It is then vinified with neutral yeast and fermented at a cool 1415°C, allowing the vibrant fruit character to shine while maintaining a crisp and structured acidity. With no finings and minimal intervention, the wine is carefully filtered and bottled, capturing its freshness and elegance.

The result is a complex and expressive Riesling with layers of Granny Smith apple, lime, lemon zest, and hints of lychee and salinity. Its sherbet-like acidity is beautifully intertwined with touches of cut grass, sap, and stony minerality, creating a wine that is both refreshing and full of depth. Each sip reveals something new, making it a dynamic and engaging wine that continues to impress.

At Nick O’Leary Winery, bringing people together to enjoy great wine, food, and company is just as important as the winemaking process itself. This Autumn and Winter, the estate will come alive with a line-up of seasonal events designed to connect guests to the land, the wines, and each other.

A highlight is the annual Mother’s Day set menu, designed by their in-house chef to celebrate the special women in our lives with a delicious meal paired to perfection with Nick O’Leary’s finest pours. Back in April, the vineyard also joined in the region’s annual harvest celebration with the Stomp Festival — a weekend of wine, food, and festivity.

NICK O'LEARY WINERY

At Heywood, their esteemed restaurant is a celebration of seasonal, locally sourced produce with dishes designed to complement their wines. This Autumn, the chef is thrilled to reintroduce their beloved whole trout dish, now with a refined twist. Served with beurre blanc, Meyer lemon, and crispy curry leaf, this dish offers a perfect balance of richness and freshness and sings alongside the 2022 Denison Chardonnay, a wine that mirrors the dish’s depth with its vibrant acidity and elegant structure. The first scent from the plate is the delicate smokiness imparted by the Pig & Pilgrim, while the flinty character of the Denison is the first thing you notice in the glass. The wine’s savoury autolysis and taut fruit profile enhances the trout’s silky texture, amplifying the beurre blanc and Meyer lemon for a bright, refined finish.

As the temperature drops, Heywood’s wine list shifts into comforting territory. For a cosy winter date night, the top wine recommendation would be the 2021 Bolaro Shiraz, which has now hit its sweet spot at four years of age. This wine is beautifully layered, starting with potpourri and violet flower aromas that lift the nose, followed by an underlying gamey accent that unfolds as it opens. On the palate, decadent layers of plum, raspberry, and blackberry shine, supported by supple, fine-grained tannins and a precise acid line that brings everything into harmony. Each sip reveals something new. Dried and fresh herbs, savory spices, rich fruit, and elegant florals, making it a captivating wine to savour slowly. Paired with a slow-braised lamb dish or a cosy fireside cheese board, the Bolaro Shiraz is the perfect indulgence for a romantic winter evening.

From the award-winning wines that capture the essence of Canberra’s terroir to the thoughtfully crafted dishes that celebrate the region’s seasonal produce, Nick O’Leary Winery at Heywood is a destination that invites you to slow down, indulge, and discover something unforgettable in every glass and on every plate.

HACKETT 3 RD SPACE

In the vibrant community of Hackett, Canberra, 3rd Space stands as a leading café and pizza bar where community, classic Italian comfort and crust meet. Inspired by the idea that we all need a “third space” outside of home and work, this family-run business has carved out a welcoming local haven that combines soul-warming food, authentic hospitality, and a genuine sense of community.

Founded by Nic Nocera and his father Alex — who brings over 30 years of pizza-making experience, 3rd Space started out of mobile catering trailers and soon evolved into a brick-and-mortar store just before COVID-19 hit. While the timing seemed daunting, their relationships with the local community kept them going. What began as a takeaway lifeline during lockdown has since flourished into a much-loved inner north favourite. With a strong European heritage and an obsession with perfecting pizza dough (thanks to guidance from two-time pizza world champion Andrea Cozzolino), Nic and Alex have spent the past four years building not just a menu, but a movement. One that invites people to slow down, enjoy life’s moments, and feel right at home.

The venue lives up to its name — your 3rd space — by offering a cosy, family-friendly environment that’s big on personality and even bigger on flavour. From trivia nights to community events and private functions, 3rd Space has become a go-to for locals and visitors alike who are looking for connection through quality food. While their hand-stretched, wood-fired pizzas are the main event, think Tri Carne with Italian sausage, Calabrese salami and leg ham, or the much-loved Patate e Salsicce with potato, rosemary and sausage. While pizzas are the main event, 3rd Space’s offerings go beyond the crust.

Crowd favourites include their famously oversized homemade schnitzel, locally roasted Veneziano coffee, and a diverse catering menu with everything from antipasto platters to on-site pizza oven experiences — bringing the 3rd Space to your next event.

And for those who love a good deal:

• Tuesdays: 2 pizzas for $40

• Wednesdays: Trivia night

• Thursdays: Kids eat free

As their Hackett community continues to thrive, 3rd Space is expanding — with a brand-new location opening in Googong. It's a bold new chapter that builds on their catering roots and loyal following, bringing their philosophy of good food, good vibes, and good company to even more Canberrans. Whether you're after a place to host your next function, enjoy a quiet coffee, or dig into pizza made with passion, 3rd Space is your place — and once you visit, you’ll feel right at home.

CAFÉ CULTURA

CANBERRA CENTRE

Café Cultura is a family-owned and operated Turkish café located in the heart of Canberra city. Founded by uncle and cousin trio Cemre Keser, Eser Girmez and Emre Girmez, the business was born from a deep love for Turkey’s rich culture, warm hospitality, and distinct flavours. With a focus on authenticity, the café brings a true taste of Turkey to Canberra locals, offering traditional food, aromatic teas and coffees, and a welcoming atmosphere. Since opening, they have built a loyal community of customers who appreciate the richness of Turkish cuisine. Some highlights include introducing their traditional Turkish breakfast banquet, hosting cultural events, participating in the multicultural festival and seeing customers return not just for the food but for the experience.

As the months get cooler, it is definitely the best time to treat yourself to some warm, comforting cuisine made with love! Canberra’s cool winters are certainly not to be underestimated. Luckily, Café Cultura have a range of delicious meals that are certain to warm the soul.

Not sure where to start? Some menu favourites include:

• Menemen - Eggs cooked in sautéed capsicum and onion on a bed of house made tomato sauce, served with parsley, feta, pepper flakes and toasted Turkish bread.

• Turkish Breakfast Banquet for 2 – Fried eggs with sujuk served with feta, olives, hummus, salad, jam, tahini & grape molasses, herbs, borek, toasted Turkish bread and simit.

• Manti - Beef mince and onion stuffed dumplings served with garlic yoghurt, red pepper flake oil and dry mint.

• Shish Delight - marinated skewers (chicken, lamb or Adana Kofte), served with Turkish rice, shepherds’ salad, hummus and tzatziki.

Of course, no Turkish experience is complete without its drinks. For autumn and winter, the café recommends traditional Turkish Tea (Çay) — a strong black tea served in tulip-shaped glasses, to be sipped and enjoyed slowly. The Turkish Coffee is also a must-try, this strong and aromatic drink is brewed freshly in a traditional cezve and served with a sweet cube of Turkish delight. Café Cultura also proudly serves Toby’s Estate Coffee, a celebrated Sydney roaster that recently earned international acclaim. Whether you’re looking for tradition or a world-class espresso, your cup will never be empty here.

The owners explain that what they love most about their Turkish culture is that it is all about hospitality, community, and rich traditions—these are values that they try to embody daily at Café Cultura. From the moment guests walk in, they want them to feel at home, just as they would in a Turkish household. Through their décor, traditional dishes, and warm service, they aim to immerse Canberrans in their own little slice of Turkey. The team is currently working on taking the café to the next level by introducing cultural nights, where guests can enjoy live music, traditional storytelling, and even receive their own Turkish coffee fortune readings — a modern-day take on ancient rituals that sparks both wonder and connection.

Looking ahead, Café Cultura shows no signs of slowing down. In the future, the owners hope to introduce more community events and themed nights to further enrich their customer’s cultural experience. Plans are underway to introduce Turkish Charcoal BBQ weekends, where patrons can experience the authentic joy of a “Mangal” spread, right in the heart of Canberra. The dream is for the café to evolve into a full-fledged cultural hub—a place where food, art, and heritage intertwine.

So, whether you're craving comfort food with a twist, a steaming pot of çay, or just a welcoming place to unwind, Café Cultura offers a slice of Turkey in the Capital with a lot of heart, constantly reminding us that good food is best when it’s shared.

At just 21 years old, young entrepreneur Chantel Bulakovski took a bold step — launching her first café in the heart of Canberra’s corporate district. Fresh out of university with a business degree and a dream, she opened 15 London Café, a London-themed venue nestled among lawyers, accountants, and consultants on London Circuit. But behind the café's sleek design and buzzing energy is a deeper story steeped in heritage, family, and a love for Balkan sweets.

Before opening the café, Chantel began her journey in her own kitchen, founding Zlatno Desserts — a luxury dessert box business that reimagined traditional Balkan recipes handed down from her beloved Baba (grandmother). Baba was the original dessert queen in the family, and Chantel spent countless hours learning her time-honoured techniques, from syrupy pastries to flaky, hand-rolled sweets.

The name Zlatno — meaning Gold in Macedonian — came from a fond childhood memory of making coffee at her Baba’s house using ornate golden cups. It was a name that not only honoured her roots but also symbolised the richness of tradition and the golden moments shared around food.

Soon after Zlatno took off, Chantel seized the opportunity to open her café — and what better name than 15 London, a nod to both the address and her love of theme-inspired spaces. With a fit-out that channels chic London city vibes and a menu that blends café classics with modern flair, 15 London quickly became a go-to for busy professionals looking for quality coffee, quick bites, and standout service.

But Chantel didn’t stop at coffee. She recognised the demand for high-quality, convenient catering and began offering grazing boxes, hot meals, breakfast spreads, and her signature desserts. Whether you're ordering a croissant and cappuccino for one or morning tea for fifty, Chantel and her team deliver it with care — often straight to the office door.

What sets Chantel apart isn’t just her age or ambition — it’s the heart she puts into every detail. Running both the café and dessert business in tandem, she brings a warmth and authenticity to every order. She’s proud to be carrying on her Baba’s legacy, blending cultural tradition with modern execution, and providing a space where customers feel like part of the story.

And while she once tried to convince Baba to open a café of her own, it’s now Chantel who is making that shared dream a reality — one pastry at a time.

CESAR'S CAFE

FLOREY

At the heart of Florey’s local shopping precinct lies a café that’s so much more than your average caffeine stop. Cesar’s Café, proudly known for Great Coffee With Big Smiles, is where good coffee meets community connection—and every cup is served with heart.

Born in Medellín, Antioquia, in 1990, Cesar Orlas began working at the age of 17 in a commercial consulting firm. It was there he discovered his love for customer service, for understanding people's needs, and for the joy of offering not just solutions but meaningful experiences—always with a spark of good energy and a smile. That sense of purpose stayed with him as he made one of the biggest decisions of his life: to move to Australia in March 2015, chasing the same dreams many immigrants carry with them—the hope of building a better life in a country full of opportunity.

His early years in Melbourne were filled with challenges. Without English, job opportunities were limited, especially in fields aligned with his training in marketing technology. But Cesar remained optimistic. He understood that progress comes in steps and that patience, persistence, and positivity would eventually open doors. After three years in Melbourne, however, he realized that his growth—particularly in language and cultural integration—had stalled. So, in 2018, he made another life-changing decision: to move to Canberra, where he knew no one and had to start from zero.

The transition was anything but easy. With basic English skills and no social network, Cesar found it hard to connect with others, let alone find a job that matched his aspirations in consulting or business. But his determination didn’t falter. He focused on immersing himself in Australian culture and sought opportunities to improve his language skills and meet new people.

In 2019, after months of quiet perseverance, he received a call that would change the trajectory of his life. A small coffee shop in Florey, where he had applied long ago, was finally offering him a position. Cesar accepted with excitement and gratitude, knowing that this could be the opportunity he had been waiting for. His first weeks on the job were a whirlwind of confusion and self-doubt. He had no background in coffee and found the pace and language of customer interactions overwhelming.

But rather than give in to frustration, Cesar leaned into the experience with joy and humility. He chose to face each day with a smile, knowing that warmth, energy, and consistency would take him further than perfection. Over time, something beautiful began to happen. He started understanding the rhythm of the café, the nuances of the language, and most importantly, the people. Customers began to feel more like friends, and the café began to feel more like home. Bonds of trust and friendship grew stronger with each interaction.

After a year of working at the café, building relationships and helping shape a space that was slowly becoming a community hub, Cesar was presented with a life-changing opportunity: the chance to buy the business. The support he received from the local community was overwhelming. Encouraged by their belief in him and the vision he brought, Cesar took the leap. In 2020, Cesar’s Café was born.

For Cesar, it was never just about owning a café, it was about creating something larger—a place inspired by the desire to change lives, one coffee at a time. He understood that the first hours of the day could set the tone for everything that followed. He wanted every customer to walk in feeling like family and walk out feeling seen, appreciated, and uplifted. creating even more spaces for connection, Cesar and his team are just getting started. For those who step into Cesar’s Café, the message is clear: you’re not just here for a coffee. You’re here to feel something real.

The café’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the values Cesar holds close: inclusion, joy, service, and community. Regardless of background, language, dietary preferences, or age, every customer is welcomed like kin. From specialty coffees—made with beans roasted in-house—to traditional Colombian empanadas, everything at Cesar’s Café is crafted with care and cultural pride. The team, many of whom speak Spanish, brings a warm Latin touch to every interaction. The atmosphere is casual, friendly, and completely genuine—no strict protocols, just people being real with each other.

The journey hasn’t been without hardship. Financial limitations in the early days made it difficult to bring Cesar’s full vision to life. Just as things were gaining momentum, news came that they would have to vacate their original space. It was a moment of heartbreak and uncertainty. But true to form, Cesar refused to give up. He and his team searched relentlessly for a solution, knowing how important it was to stay close to the loyal customers—many of them elderly— who had supported him from the start.

When all seemed lost, a customer stepped in to help, connecting Cesar with a real estate agent who believed in what the café stood for. That introduction led to a new space, a new beginning, and a new chapter in the story of Cesar’s Café—one defined by resilience, gratitude, and the power of community.

Today, Cesar’s Café is more than just a business—it’s a gathering place, a cultural bridge, and a living testament to what can happen when someone leads with heart. Cesar and his brother Sergio have big plans to open more cafes across Canberra, start hosting more cultural events and even music and dance festivals that bring Canberra’s diverse communities together while celebrating their latin heritage.

The National Opera in Canberra is ushering in a bold new chapter in 2025, marked by fresh leadership, local investment, and a dynamic season designed to enchant audiences and elevate homegrown talent. At the heart of this transformation is the appointment of acclaimed soprano and educator Sonia Anfiloff as Artistic Director—an announcement that signals a renewed vision grounded in artistic excellence and community connection.

Anfiloff’s return to Canberra, following nearly a decade performing in Vienna, brings with it not only international experience but a palpable energy and dedication to local development. Her vision is clear: nurture Canberra’s vocal talent from the ground up, championing vocal health, technical refinement, and stagecraft. More than a figurehead, Anfiloff is a mentor and leader committed to crafting meaningful performance pathways for artists at every stage of their careers.

In her own words, Anfiloff describes her approach with characteristic clarity: “Although National Opera is functioning as a not-for-profit organisation, it is fundamental that we approach all of our public commitments with the highest standard we can muster.” That commitment is set to shine throughout a thoughtfully curated 2025 season that balances beloved classics with bold new formats.

THE NATIONAL OPERA CANBERRA

The centrepiece of the season is a full production of Hansel and Gretel, running from 12–20 December. With Elsa Huber and Xanthe Allen leading as Gretel and Hansel respectively, this enchanting fairytale promises a whimsical yet musically rich experience suitable for all ages. In parallel, a creatively condensed love triangle reduction of Der Rosenkavalier will bring Strauss’ work to a broader audience, proving once again that innovation and tradition can harmoniously coexist.

The remainder of the season will feature a diverse array of concerts, including a Mother’s Day celebration marking 250 years of Jane Austen, and a vibrant showcase of French arias and song in Vive la Voix!. Audiences will also enjoy performances by seasoned artists in the exclusive VIP Fundraising Concert Series—intimate events that offer a unique opportunity to engage directly with the performers following each concert.Beyond the stage, National Opera’s commitment to education and artistic growth takes centre stage with the Month of Masterclasses running through May and June. Open to performers across genres and levels, these sessions—led by industry professionals like Dianna Nixon, Sarah Mann, Don Christopher, and Anfiloff herself—aim to demystify the operatic world and support the artistic journeys of Canberra’s singers.

The National Opera Chorus will also continue to be a vital force in the company’s fabric, offering accessible entry into the operatic world with no audition required. For anyone harbouring a curiosity about opera, this open-door policy is a unique invitation to step onto the stage and experience the thrill of performance firsthand. The dedicated artists cite the company’s inclusive atmosphere and strong mentorship as standout aspects of working with National Opera. A focus on collaboration, a wealth of development opportunities, and a range of performance formats ensure that Canberra’s opera scene remains not only vibrant, but meaningfully accessible.

As 2025 unfolds, one thing is certain: under Sonia Anfiloff’s artistic direction, National Opera is embracing a future where local voices are heard, nurtured, and celebrated on the stages they deserve. For Canberra’s audiences and artists alike, it’s a season to anticipate—and to remember.

BALLOON ALOFT CANBERRA

SOARING, FLYING: THE STORY

For over 35 years, Balloon Aloft Canberra has been giving locals and visitors the chance to float above the nation’s capital—one breathtaking sunrise at a time. Founded in 1986 by the Wallington family, this proudly local business didn’t just pioneer commercial ballooning in the region—they were also the driving force behind the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, which remains Australia’s biggest annual balloon fiesta and one of the longest-running ballooning events in the world. Talk about lifting a city’s spirits—literally.

From day one, Balloon Aloft Canberra has struck the perfect balance between exhilaration and absolute professionalism. Their 100% safety record (yes, you read that correctly) is thanks to a highly trained team, strict adherence to Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations, and a healthy respect for Canberra’s famously tricky weather. Their fully certified pilots know the local winds like the back of their hand. The ground crew are not just along for the ride—every member completes a rigorous training programme to ensure every flight runs smoother than the postflight champagne toast.

So, what’s on offer? Well, the crowd favourite would be their Sunrise Balloon Flight. Each morning, just as the city stirs, passengers rise gently into the dawn sky, floating over Lake Burley Griffin, parklands, treetops, and some of Australia’s most iconic buildings. One moment you’re hovering low enough to wave at early morning joggers, the next you're cruising 3,000 feet above the rooftops. Peace and perspective settle in well, as the flights bring a unique sense of magic.

A SKY FILLED WITH COLOUR

Canberra's Unqiue Rainbow

Then there’s the Canberra Balloon Spectacular—showcasing an annual rainbow painted sky, thanks to the amalgamation of ballons. The array of balloons including international special shapes, launching from the Parliamentary Triangle as the sun rises over the lake. Spectators gather for free across the city to soak in the scene, but let’s be honest—nothing beats the view from a basket. Balloon Aloft Canberra has been at the heart of the event since launching the very first one back in 1986, and they’re still setting the bar skyhigh.

Of course, none of this happens without a stellar team—and Balloon Aloft Canberra have set altitude of expectations in their niche. At the helm is John Wallington, founding owner, Chief Pilot, and absolute ballooning legend. With a background in gliding and meteorology, John started flying balloons the same year he launched the company. His trophy cabinet includes National Hot Air Balloon Championships (1988–90, 1992–94), an Australian altitude record, and two epic long-distance flights—across the country with Dick Smith in 1993, and across the Tasman Sea in 2000 (yes, in a balloon). He was also awarded the prestigious Montgolfier Diploma, the world’s highest ballooning honour, in 1995.

Alongside John is Hyung Kim, Director and leading pilot, who began ballooning in Korea in 1998 and brought his expertise to Australia in 2009. Then there’s Gary Lacey, commercial pilot, instructor, international championship official, and former Competition Director of the Australian National Ballooning Championships. And let’s not forget Dave Roberts, who took his first balloon flight as a child in 1988 during the festival—and never really came down. Now a pilot himself, Dave brings passion, precision, and the same sense of wonder he felt as a kid.

Balloon Aloft’s Canberra balloons also serve as flying billboards for some major brands. Over the years, they’ve carried logos and artwork for brands and companies. When you see their balloons overhead, there’s a good chance they’re also supporting a community initiative or raising funds for local schools and charities through regular flight donations.

Despite their sky-high track record, the journey hasn’t always been smooth. The 2019–2020 bushfires and widespread smoke cut flying days dramatically. Then came the hailstorms. And of course, COVID-19 grounded their entire fleet in early 2020. But like any great flight crew, they stayed calm, adjusted the course, and came back stronger continuing to prioritise safety above all else.

A Sky-High Legacy

In addition to award-winning flights, Balloon Aloft Canberra has racked up plenty of industry accolades—11 Canberra Region Tourism Awards, the 1995 Australian Tourism Award for Significant Regional Attraction, and consistent Tripadvisor Certificates of Excellence since 2015. Their mission today? To share Canberra’s beauty with even more visitors from interstate and overseas, working closely with national and local Tourism in Australia to promote extended stays in the capital (because trust us—you’ll want to stick around).

So, whether you’re a first timer chasing bucket list dreams, or a Canberran wanting to rediscover your own backyard, Balloon Aloft Canberra will be ready to take you to new heights—safely, smoothly, and with a view that’ll stay with you for years. Why wait for the next festival? Flights operate year-round, weather permitting. Come see the capital from a whole new angle and let Balloon Aloft Canberra lift your day—one sunrise at a time.

UP, UP AND HERE TO STAY

Living the Dream Above Canberra with Balloon Aloft

For many, traveling in a hot air balloon is put on a bucket list because of its obvious breathtaking adventure that seems almost too magical to be true. Imagine soaring through the sky, gently floating above the world below, just like in the 2009 Disney/ Pixar film Up, where a house is lifted by hundreds of vibrant balloons. It’s a dream that’s captured the imagination of countless adventures, and for those who book with Balloon Aloft, it becomes a new reality.

But it’s not just the fantasy of floating among the clouds that makes hot air balloons so captivating. There’s something undeniably enchanting about their graceful beauty and the sense of freedom they represent. Australian entrepreneur Dick Smith and balloonist John Wallington, who made history with a non-stop hot air balloon crossing of Australia, the dream only grew stronger. This story, full of adventure and audacity, sparked a deep desire to one day take flight and experience that sense of wonder for themselves — a feeling shared by so many who look up at the sky and dream of what it must be like to drift above the world.

The experience begins in the early hours, well before sunrise, with a 5:30am meeting at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra. Guests arrive quietly, some wide-eyed with excitement, others still shaking off sleep. In the hotel foyer, they’re greeted by the welcoming and professional Balloon Aloft Canberra team. After a clear and concise safety briefing, everyone boards a bus headed to the launch site—just outside the Calvary baseball diamonds in Manuka.

At the field, the scene is calm, wrapped in soft morning light. Crew members begin setting up the balloon equipment while guests watch, and in some cases, even lend a hand in rolling out the massive balloon envelope across the dewy grass. Cold air is pumped into the fabric using large industrial fans, causing the balloon to slowly take shape while lying on the ground. When the burners fire up, the atmosphere changes. The loud, fiery blasts are unforgettable as waves of hot air roar into the balloon, lifting it upright. Cameras click. Faces light up. It’s a moment worth capturing—majestic, colourful, and full of anticipation.

Boarding the basket feels surreal. With no strap in seatbelts or harnesses, and just an open wicker basket, with the promise of flight. As the balloon begins to lift off, the ground falls away gently, and the city of Canberra slowly unfolds below. The sensation of floating is both peaceful and exhilarating. From above, landmarks like Lake Burley Griffin, Parliament House, and the surrounding suburbs take on a new dimension. With nothing but open air surrounding the basket, the perspective is unmatched; quiet, serene, and completely unfiltered. The pilot occasionally shares stories, fun facts, and points out locations along the flight path, adding narration to the visual spectacle. The occasional roar of the burner is the only real interruption in an otherwise silent and calming journey.

As the balloon begins its descent, passengers are guided into a gentle landing position. The basket touches down softly on open grass, bringing the flight to a smooth and satisfying end.

But the experience doesn’t end there. Guests are invited to step inside the partially deflated balloon, a rare and whimsical moment that feels like stepping into a giant, colourful cloud. In true tradition, the morning concludes with a celebratory glass of champagne shared among the group as a toast to the flight, the sunrise, and unforgettable moments, high above the nation’s capital.

For some, though, the morning is far from over. Balloon Aloft Canberra invites guests back to the Hyatt Hotel to enjoy a gourmet breakfast at The Promenade Café, a perfect finish to an already remarkable experience. This premium buffet, served daily from 6:30 am to 10:30 am, features a carefully curated selection of dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From creamy scrambled eggs and smashed avocado toast to Nutella croissant French toast and preserved lemon ricotta hotcakes, every dish is a delight. Those after a lighter option can enjoy an array of pastries, seasonal fruit, and cereals.

Settling into breakfast and reflecting on the morning brings a quiet sense of joy and accomplishment that lingers well beyond the flight. It’s more than just ticking a box on the bucket list; it’s a memory that will stay with you for years to come. As the beloved character Ellie once said in Up, “Thanks for the adventure—now go have a new one!” Maybe this is your sign—it’s your turn.

Since opening in April last year, this hands-on creative space has quickly become a go-to destination for locals looking to explore their artistic side in a fun and welcoming environment.

Founded with the aim of giving Canberrans something fresh and exciting to do, Instala DIY Studio offers a wide variety of beginner-friendly workshops designed to help people tap into their creativity—no prior experience required. Guests can choose from a curated selection of experiences, including perfume, candle and jewellery making, as well as fluid bear painting, decoden cream decorating and crystal diffuser creation. Friendly instructors guide guests through the process, ensuring all ages and skill levels feel confident and allow their creativity to blossom.

Yolanda’s personal favourite activity is perfumemaking, she particularly enjoys creating scents to match different seasons - sweet and floral for summer, and warm and spicy for winter. It’s such a fun way to express yourself, and with over 100 fragrance oils available to choose from, every customer gets to design a one-of-a-kind scent that they absolutely love.

For first-time visitors, any of their workshops are a great choice because they’re all designed for beginners to unleash their imagination and creativity and are tailored to different skill levels. They offer a menu of wines and bubbles to sip at as you make your next creation and for more festive occasions, Instala allows guests to bring along snacks and drinks, which creates a fully customisable and social creative session, where lots of fun is to be had.

INSTALA DIY STUDIO

Beyond entertainment, Instala is committed to community support. The studio has partnered with nonprofit organisations to host workshops for vulnerable individuals and their carers, providing them with a creative and uplifting experience where art can be used as a tool for connection, relaxation, and empowerment. Yolanda believes that art is for everyone, and she is determined to help people explore their creativity while having an unforgettable time. In the future, Instala DIY Studio has exciting plans for growth and innovation. The team is expanding its calendar to include seasonal-themed workshops, ensuring that the creative offerings remain fresh and engaging throughout the year. They’re also aiming to bring the experience into schools, providing students with fun, hands-on learning opportunities that inspire imagination and confidence.

Instala has already started taking their workshops on the road. For Easter, they brought their Perfume Making and Raden Jewellery sessions to the National Folk Festival, giving even more people the chance to experience what the studio has to offer. With extended hours most nights and a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere, Instala DIY Studio is fast becoming one of Canberra’s most exciting destinations for locals and visitors alike. HARE & FAWN STUDIO

Owned and operated by seasoned salon entrepreneur Emmalene Mahar, Hare and Fawn is more than just a place to refresh your hairstyle. It’s a sanctuary — a space thoughtfully designed to help guests feel seen, pampered, and connected. After over a decade of experience running the successful Eden Hair Energy in Canberra's Dickson, Emmalene felt a strong pull to return to her roots in regional New South Wales. With a desire to open a salon within an hour of Canberra, she explored locations from Goulburn to Yass, Braidwood, and Bungendore. When the opportunity arose to establish her new venture in Queanbeyan’s iconic Monaro Street, previously home to RJ’s Hair for many years, she knew it was the perfect fit.

MONARO ST. QUEANBEYAN

When Emmalene began shaping the vision for Hare and Fawn, she was drawn to the concept of "country luxe" — a blend of rustic charm and refined elegance. The word “Fawn” resurfaced from her early days in the industry, inspired by a hair colour she had used frequently during her apprenticeship called “Frivolous Fawn”.

As she explored various name options, a colleague suggested Hare and Fawn — a clever nod to both Eden Hair Energy’s signature bunny sculpture and the playful wordplay between “hair” and “hare.” The name captured the essence of the brand perfectly, and so Hare and Fawn was born.

Emmalene envisioned Hare and Fawn as a space that would evoke the charm and elegance of the Southern Highlands. Think The Press Shop café meets Glam Fragrance and Beauty - two places she loves. Her goal was to create an atmosphere that felt both warm and luxurious carefully designed to evoke relaxation and elegance.

With her personal style evolving since founding Eden Hair Energy in Dickson in 2014, she aimed to design a salon that offered guests an elevated experience while also serving as an inspiring and enjoyable place for her team to work.

Her hope is that Hare and Fawn becomes a place of indulgence, relaxation, and comfort for every client. She also aspires for the salon to become a long-standing part of the Queanbeyan community and a trusted local business known for delivering high-quality service and genuine care.

HARE & FAWN STUDIO

As the cooler seasons approach, the Hare and Fawn team is particularly passionate about helping clients maintain healthy, radiant hair. During seasonal changes, both the hair and scalp can start to dry out. During Autumn and Winter, clients are especially advised to incorporate hydrating treatments either during salon visits or as part of their at-home hair routine. It's also a great time to consult with a stylist about any scalp concerns that may arise with the change in seasons.

At Hare and Fawn, the team offers a wide range of high-quality products tailored to address all hair and scalp needs. They are passionate about working with clients to create personalised hair care plans designed to support healthy, beautiful hair year-round.

For Emmalene, moisture is always the foundation of great hair care. She recommends using a leave-in moisturiser after washing, as it benefits all hair types by improving manageability, reducing frizz, enhancing colour longevity, and helping styles hold longer. Her current favourite is DNA Organics Hydrofrizz Leave-in Crème, a lightweight yet deeply nourishing product that adds shine and leaves the hair feeling beautifully soft.

Equally essential, she says, is heat protection. For anyone using a hairdryer, straightener, or any heated styling tools, a protective product is non-negotiable. Emmalene’s top pick is Dream Coat by Colour WOW—a standout formula that not only shields hair from heat damage but also seals the outer layer to boost shine, prolong styling results, and defend against frizz and environmental moisture.

Since opening Hare and Fawn, Emmalene has embraced the vibrant spirit of the Queanbeyan community, forging meaningful connections with clients from across the region. With a long-term vision in mind, she looks forward to watching the community grow and evolve over the next decade, which she believes will be a pivotal time for the area. What resonates most with her about Queanbeyan is its strong sense of community and rich history. The town’s down-to-earth, welcoming nature offers a refreshing authenticity that she deeply values. With its curated blend of country charm, modern luxury, and genuine community spirit, Hare and Fawn is a beautiful new chapter in Queanbeyan's evolving story.

SZIA BEAUTY

MONARO ST. QUEANBEYAN

Thriving in the heart of Queanbeyan, SZIA Beauty is a warm and welcoming boutique salon offering expert cosmetic tattooing and beauty services all with one goal in mind: to help people feel good in their own skin and create a space where everyone feels welcome, comfortable, and looked after. At just 22 years old, Claudia Balogh is the powerhouse behind Szia Beauty. A third-generation Queanbeyan local and thirdgeneration business owner, Claudia has deep roots in the community and is proud to carry on her family’s legacy in her hometown. The name “SZIA” (pronounced see-ya) is a Hungarian word meaning “hi” or “hello”—a simple, warm greeting that reflects exactly how Claudia wants every client to feel when they walk through her doors.

Claudia’s journey into the beauty industry began at the early age of15 when she completed a Certificate II in Makeup while still in school. After graduating from St Clare’s College, she jumped straight into an apprenticeship, later completing her Diploma of Beauty Therapy full-time at CIT—all while gaining handson experience in the industry. Her love for beauty was never just skin-deep; it was always about helping others feel more confident. After finishing her studies, Claudia spent a year training with a cosmetic tattoo artist to refine her skills. That experience gave her the push she needed to take the next step—opening SZIA Beauty. “It’s not about changing how people look,” Claudia says. “It’s about helping them feel good in their own skin.” Szia Beauty specialises in cosmetic tattooing, brow shaping, and waxing, with Claudia’s signature brow-mapping technique proving particularly popular among clients. Eyebrow shaping is one of Claudia’s favourite services, where she takes the time to carefully map each brow to complement the client’s unique face shape—an attention to detail that truly sets her work apart. Waxing is another client favourite, known for being fast, efficient, and as smooth and comfortable an experience as possible.

Beyond the beauty services, Claudia brings heart to her work and takes pride in creating a safe, inclusive space for anyone looking to indulge in a little self-care. “Everyone is welcome here,” she says. “Whether it’s your first treatment or your fiftieth, you’ll be looked after.” But building a business hasn’t come without its challenges. As a young salon owner, Claudia has faced the pressure of proving herself in a competitive industry. She wears many hats—from doing treatments to managing bookings, marketing, and finances— and at times, that means missing out on things people her age might typically enjoy. Still, she wouldn’t have it any other way. This is her passion, and she’s proud of what she has created. Among Claudia’s biggest accomplishments are opening SZIA Beauty from the ground up, completing her diploma while working, and undertaking a year of specialised tattoo training. Since launching the salon, her client base has more than doubled, a rewarding sign that she’s on the right path. She also stays connected to the community by supporting local raffles, fundraisers, and creating a space where people feel good about themselves. For Claudia, even small gestures can have a big impact.

Looking ahead, the future for SZIA Beauty is bright. Claudia plans to continue growing the salon, expanding her services, and eventually moving into a bigger space—or even bringing on a team. What matters most is continuing to do what she loves: helping people feel confident, cared for, and completely at ease. Excitingly, SZIA Beauty will soon be launching an exclusive skincare range, a curated skincare range, a move Claudia hopes will deepen her offering and bring even more value to her clients. A small event or launch may be on the horizon—so keep your eyes on her Instagram for the details.

TOTAL BODY CONTOURING

MANUKA

Located in the centre of Canberra’s boutique shopping district, Manuka, Total Body Contouring has fast become one of Canberra’s most trusted destinations for advanced non-invasive body and skin treatments. More than just a clinic, it’s a reflection of owner Christy Christensen’s lifelong passion for beauty, health, and helping others feel confident in their skin.Christy’s journey began in the Philippines, and by the age of 11, she had arrived in Australia—young, curious, and full of ambition. Now a devoted mother of four, with children ranging from adulthood to five years old, Christy brings her personal story of resilience and passion into every inch of her clinic. With years of experience managing retail stores, leading fitness centres, and rising to the role of regional manager at Bupa, she found her calling in the perfect blend of beauty, wellness, and human connection.

The turning point came during a casual conversation with a Bupa patient who mentioned selling her business, Total Body Contouring. Christy immediately saw the potential—not just as a business, but as a platform to merge everything she loved. Within just 12 months, she expanded the clinic from three to six rooms, introduced four new treatments, and added premium skincare lines such as Dr. Aspect and Medik8 to deliver radiant, healthy skin from the inside out.At Total Body Contouring, the focus is on empowering clients to reclaim their confidence with a comprehensive suite of services powered by the latest, most advanced technology. From Cooltech fat freezing, a favourite for tackling stubborn areas, to the revolutionary Tesla Chair for pelvic floor strengthening and relief from incontinence, each treatment is selected with precision and care.

For those seeking non-surgical lifting and skin tightening, Ultraformer—including the newly added Ultraformer MPT, the first of its kind in Canberra—is a standout performer. Onda technology further complements the offering with targeted solutions for cellulite and fluid retention, while Tesla Former aids in muscle definition and core strength. Each treatment is carried out with an unwavering commitment to detail and safety. Christy has personally studied every piece of equipment in the clinic and ensures her entire team is certified by the manufacturers—because when it comes to clients’ wellbeing, there are no shortcuts. The clinic has also been proudly featured in Women in Business by Canberra Weekly and City News.

But success hasn’t come without its challenges. Building the right team, balancing business with family life, and continually reinvesting in the clinic—all while putting client outcomes first—has demanded resilience and grit. Christy hasn’t taken a salary, instead choosing to funnel every dollar back into the business. From working with local trades to supporting charity organisations like the iKids Cancer Foundation and LGBTQIA+ community events, Total Body Contouring is as much a part of the local fabric as it is a beauty destination. Looking ahead, Christy envisions expanding to Canberra’s north, offering even more clients access to the cutting-edge, client-first care that sets Total Body Contouring apart. With her signature warmth and drive, she’s just getting started. For anyone ready to enhance their natural beauty, feel stronger, or simply glow from within—Total Body Contouring offers more than a treatment. It offers transformation, care, and a team who will walk the journey with you every step of the way.

RESET RECOVERY

In a world where burnout and stress are ever-present, one local recovery centre is offering something rare: a chance to RESET. Located in Fyshwick and Belconnen, Reset Strength & Sports Recovery Centre is not a typical wellness hub. They don’t just focus on recovery for athletes or gym enthusiasts; they’ve created a space for everyone to experience better physical and mental health. Whether you’re a marathon runner, a nurse on night shifts, or a busy parent juggling life, Reset welcomes all. It's an inclusive, holistic space that helps you feel better and move better—long-term.

By focusing on 360° wellness, Reset advocates for both strength and recovery, ensuring access to services for those who’ve often been left out of the wellness conversation.

It’s about getting in touch with your body’s needs, listening to its cues, and integrating strength training into your recovery process—not just for aesthetics, but for real results. This approach is the foundation of their mission to cater to individuals' unique goals and support their journeys to better health.

REST, RECOVER, RESET

RECOVERY THAT GOES DEEPER

When it comes to recovery, Reset’s offerings are nothing short of impressive. These aren’t just buzzwords—they’re science-backed treatments that deliver real results. From an accessible 24/7 Gym and Pilates Studio to infrared saunas, compression therapy, and contrast therapy, Reset has something to cater to every need. But their massage services are equally top-tier. Whether you need lymphatic drainage to aid detox, remedial massage for muscle tension, or myofascial cupping to boost circulation and release tightness, Reset has you covered. Their pregnancy massage targets the specific needs of expecting mothers, while therapeutic and relaxation massages are perfect for relieving stress and soothing sore muscles. Whatever your recovery goals, Reset’s expert therapists have you sorted.

Though a crowd favourite stands in contrast therapy, “Switching between hot and cold treatments—is one of our most popular services, as people feel instantly more awake and focused.” says Sheridan, co-founder of Reset. It’s powerful when paired with breathwork too.” This is an example of a hot-cold cycle that boosts circulation, and helps flush out waste, to get oxygen-rich blood flowing to muscles, which is essential in recovery.

Infrared Saunas work on a deeper level using light spectrums to support detoxification, skin health, and even blood pressure regulation. While the heat helps your body sweat out the day’s stress, the targeted wavelengths offer relaxation and support recovery, making it ideal for both physical recovery and long-term wellness.

For those in need of a muscle-reviving jolt, ice baths are a no-nonsense way to ease soreness and reduce inflammation. “Using ice baths before strength sessions can actually help reduce fatigue and boost performance,” says Jack, the other cofounder. It’s cold, it’s intense, but it works. And let’s be honest—there’s something strangely addictive about the post-plunge buzz.

Compression Therapy is another game-changer for anyone seeking a quick recovery without lifting a finger. High-tech boots gently squeeze your legs, improving circulation and speeding up muscle recovery. “Nurses, hospitality workers, and people on their feet all day really benefit from it,” says Sheridan. It’s perfect for those battling fatigue or swelling after a long shift or intense workout. All you need to do is kick back, put on your headphones, and relax while your legs get the love they deserve.

Pilates, Strength, and the Bigger Picture

Reset isn’t just about recovery; it’s about strengthening your body for the long haul. Enter Pilates—an often-overlooked but highly effective tool for building flexibility and strengthening smaller muscle groups. "Pilates is recommended by many recovery professionals," explains Sheridan. Reset’s Pilates facility, which opened in March 2025, is unlike any other in the ACT region. The studio is equipped with interactive screens at each station, giving members the ability to choose their workout style—whether it’s abs, legs, flexibility, strength, or cardio. It’s all about convenience. No more scrambling to book a class or waiting for your spot; you can tailor your session to your schedule and intensity level, with clear instructions and wireless headphones guiding you through each movement. This innovative setup isn’t just for Pilates lovers; it’s perfect for those who’ve always been hesitant about classes. You get the chance to try one-on-one sessions in a comfortable, private environment, making it easier to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

NOT JUST ANOTHER NUMBER

At Reset, we don’t see people as just another number. We build real relationships,” says Sheridan. “When people feel comfortable and supported, we’re better able to help them reach their goals.” Their mission is clear: to improve the quality of life for all individuals— not just athletes. Inclusivity and accessibility lie at the heart of Reset’s mission. “We want to make these services affordable and welcoming,” says Sheridan. “This isn’t just for people who can deadlift twice their weight—it’s for anyone who wants to feel better in their body.”

The staff fosters an environment that’s friendly, welcoming, and deeply supportive, creating a space where people feel truly valued. With plans to expand to a third location and introduce even more innovative tools—such as red-light therapy beds—the Reset team is excited about the future. “People are realising recovery isn’t a luxury— it’s essential” says Sheridan. Reset is leading the way in showing that wellness isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling good, and investing in long-term health for everyone.

So, if you’re looking to hit the reset button on your wellness journey, Reset Strength & Sports Recovery Centre might just be the place you never knew you needed. Whether you're chasing personal records or simply want to feel better waking up in the morning, Reset Strength & Sports Recovery Centre offers something rare in today’s world: a chance to truly pause, recharge, and reconnect—with your body, your mind, and your community.

RAY OF LIGHT YOGA

CATALINA, NSW

Ray of Light Yoga and Counselling is an Ayurvedic healing centre located in the heart of Catalina, NSW. The space is designed to support individuals in feeling more connected to themselves—physically, mentally, and emotionally—regardless of whether they’ve ever stepped into a yoga space before. Founded by experienced yoga therapist and counsellor Rachel Nokes, the centre integrates movement, breathwork, meditation, and traditional healing wisdom in ways that are both accessible and practical. Her work focuses on helping people find greater ease in their bodies and clarity in their minds, particularly during times of stress or overwhelm. Rachel’s path to this work began with her own search for meaning and healing through personal loss and life’s challenges. Yoga provided her with a framework for recovery and growth, which she now shares with others.

For Rachel, yoga has been far more than a profession—it has been a lifeline. Through some of life’s most difficult chapters, including the premature loss of a parent, challenges with infertility, relationship struggles, and deep questions around purpose and belonging, yoga provided both a refuge and a practical toolkit. It offered her a way to stay grounded and connected amid uncertainty and grief.

Her early interest in yoga was rooted in movement. As a young person with a background in gymnastics, she was drawn to the physical side of the practice. The strength and flexibility she cultivated on the mat supported her through the natural shifts of an ageing body. But as time went on, it was the deeper dimensions the study of yoga therapy and the richness of yoga philosophy that most deeply influenced her path and how she now shares yoga with others.

Through Ray of Light, Rachel offers one-on-one yoga therapy and counselling sessions tailored to the specific needs of each person. These sessions are intended to support those navigating stress, injury, anxiety, or major life transitions with tools that are grounded and adaptable. She also hosts private healing retreats at her home studio on the NSW South Coast. These retreats offer a chance to step away from everyday routines and into a quiet, natural environment where participants can rest, reflect, and reconnect with themselves. For those interested in exploring the roots of yoga more deeply, Rachel facilitates yoga philosophy and teacher training programs. These are designed for yoga teachers and serious practitioners who want to engage with the tradition beyond the physical postures. Additionally, she leads guided spiritual journeys to destinations such as India and Bali. These group experiences combine visits to sacred sites with space for personal reflection and inner exploration, all held in a supportive and intentional environment.

Rachel is especially passionate about making yoga accessible to all, meeting people exactly where they are, whether they’re navigating physical challenges, emotional overwhelm, or simply seeking reconnection. At its core, Rachel’s work is about helping people feel more at home in themselves. She encourages a deeper understanding of the mind-body-emotion connection and emphasizes that simple, consistent practices can lead to meaningful change. No spiritual background, flexibility, or experience is required—only curiosity and a willingness to show up. Whether someone is seeking support through a difficult time, aiming to deepen their personal practice, or ready to explore new territory, Rachel’s role is to walk alongside them and help uncover what’s already within. Rather than viewing yoga as something to “give” to others, she sees it as a shared, collaborative process in which each person is empowered to take an active role in their own healing journey. For those willing to step into that process, Rachel believes yoga offers one of the most empowering tools available—a way to live with more awareness, ease, and purpose.

Āyurveda is one of the world’s oldest and most comprehensive health systems, offering personalised and practical approaches to support wellbeing across body, mind, and emotions. Rather than relying on shortterm fixes, Ayurvedic medicine focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of imbalance. Through tailored dietary and lifestyle recommendations, herbal remedies, and therapeutic practices, it supports long-term, sustainable health. In an Ayurvedic consultation at Ray of Light Yoga and Counselling, clients explore their unique constitution (or dosha) alongside current health concerns. From this, a personalised wellness plan is developed to support digestion, sleep, energy levels, and overall vitality. Each plan includes clear, manageable steps—such as food and lifestyle adjustments, herbal support, and simple at-home treatments—that are designed to integrate easily into daily life. These consultations are suitable for a wide range of issues, including digestive discomfort, hormonal imbalances, stress, fatigue, skin conditions, joint pain, and weight-related concerns. Whether addressing ongoing symptoms or seeking greater balance and energy, Ayurveda offers a gentle and natural approach to health. By combining ancient wisdom with practical tools, it empowers individuals to take an active role in their own healing and wellbeing.

RAY OF LIGHT YOGA

As the colder months set in, supporting the nervous system and maintaining mental wellbeing becomes especially important. One of the most effective ways to support the nervous system during the autumn and winter months is by aligning daily life with the natural rhythms of the season. According to Ayurvedic wisdom, autumn is associated with Vata dosha, which governs movement, change, and the nervous system itself. As the air turns cooler, daylight wanes, and nature begins to slow down, Vata’s inherent qualities—light, dry, mobile, and erratic—can become heightened. This imbalance often manifests as feelings of anxiety, restlessness, and depletion. To restore balance and nourish the nervous system during this time Rachel recommends cultivating calm, warmth, and steadiness through everyday choices. A few simple yet effective strategies include:

Establishing gentle daily rhythms – Consistent mealtimes, sleep schedules, and self-care rituals can provide a sense of structure and safety for the nervous system.

Eating warm, grounding foods – Nourishing meals like soups, stews, roasted vegetables, and herbal teas offer comfort and support digestion during the colder months.

Engaging in slow, breath-led movement – Practices such as gentle yoga, walking in nature, or warm oil self-massage can release physical tension and calm mental activity.

Creating a soothing environment – Warm lighting, soft textures, calming aromas, and gentle music help signal to the body and mind that it is safe to relax.

Honouring quiet time – Autumn and winter naturally invite reflection. Journalling, breath awareness, and time in nature allow space for stillness and reconnection with inner wisdom.

Most importantly, seasonal slowing down should not be mistaken for a loss of productivity. Instead, it represents a vital aspect of long-term wellbeing. By living in harmony with the cycles of nature, individuals can foster deep rest and renewal—creating space for clarity, balance, and a more grounded connection to themselves. For Rachel, one of her greatest joys is chanting, a practice she weaves into her sessions, often accompanied by her harmonium, an instrument she has studied extensively in one-on-one lessons over the years.

In 2025, Ray of Light Yoga and Counselling will offer a series of yoga retreats and immersive experiences designed to support deep rest, reflection, and personal transformation.

June 21 – July 1: Awakening the Energy Body and Beyond (North Bali)

This 10-day retreat takes place in a quiet, lesser-known part of North Bali, surrounded by lush nature and the gentle rhythms of village life. The experience is intended to help participants step away from everyday distractions and explore the subtle layers of the self—particularly the energy body—through ancient yogic practices, self-inquiry, and guided study. It offers a rare opportunity to work directly with energetic awareness, opening space for personal insight and inner balance.

November 1 – 7: The Way of the Goddess (Women’s Retreat, North Bali)

Held in the mountains of North Bali, this six-night retreat invites women of all generations to gather in a sacred and supportive space. Through embodied movement, myth, sound healing, kirtan, ceremony, and immersion in nature, participants will explore the many archetypal expressions of the Goddess—fierce, nurturing, creative, and wise. The retreat focuses on reclaiming voice, desire, and inner knowing, all within the safety of a collective experience rooted in sisterhood.

January 2026: Mountains to the Sea – A Journey Through Southern India

Ray of Light founder Rachel Nokes will also lead a 16-night spiritual journey through South India in January 2026. This guided pilgrimage through Tamil Nadu takes participants across ancient temples, vibrant cities, and sacred cultural sites. More than a travel experience, the journey offers deep spiritual immersion through yoga practice, cultural exchange, traditional food, and connection to the people and places that have influenced Rachel’s personal path since she began leading retreats in India in 2014.

Private Healing Retreats (Batemans Bay, NSW)

For those seeking a more personalised approach, Ray of Light also offers private healing retreats at its home base in Batemans Bay. These one-on-one retreats begin with a thorough health assessment to understand each guest’s physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. From there, Rachel creates a customised yoga therapy program that may include movement, breathwork, meditation, dietary guidance, and lifestyle recommendations—integrating yogic wisdom with modern therapeutic insights. Held in a peaceful, nurturing environment, these retreats are ideal for anyone seeking focused support and a quiet space to heal. Ongoing follow-up is available as part of the retreat package.

Each retreat, whether local or abroad, is rooted in the same intention: to offer grounded, transformative experiences that help people reconnect with their inner wisdom and restore balance in their lives.

VNFITTED

Founded in August 2020 by young entrepreneur Valentine Novak, VNFITTED represents a philosophy rooted in self-improvement, discipline, and determination. The journey of VNFITTED began in an unlikely place—on the floor of Canberra Airport, where founder Valentine Novak was working for Qantas Freight during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the global slowdown grinding air traffic to a halt, his 8-hour shifts were quiet, marked by minimal workload and long hours of reflection.

That stillness became fertile ground for deeper thinking. He had already started taking his health, mindset, and fitness more seriously, and naturally, bigger questions began to surface: "What do I really want to do?" "What do I actually want to build?" One uneventful day, while scrolling through the Notes app on his phone, he stumbled upon an entry dated September 27, 2019. The title read: “Start a clothing brand.” . The idea had been sitting there for nearly a year, untouched and forgotten but in that

"VNFITTED BECAME THE KNIFE I USED TO CUT OFF THE OLD ME."
- Valentine Novak, Founder

moment, something clicked. “Why not try now?”

At the time, 25-year-old Valentine had zero experience in fashion, design, or eCommerce. But that didn’t matter. At that point, he made the resolved decision that he would figure it out and set his first goal, which was to create one product and launch a website, just to see where it might lead. What followed were months of relentless self-education. He taught himself how to source materials, evaluate suppliers, develop a brand name, design a logo, and test prototype garments.

He worked full-time by day and built VNFITTED after hours, it was all or nothing. On March 1st, 2021, six months after making that initial decision, he officially launched the brand’s first Signature Collection. Since then, the highlights have been countless. From building real connections and friendships through the brand to seeing complete strangers wear pieces that once only existed in his imagination—every moment has been a milestone.

That feeling, he says, never gets old. For Valentine, fitness, health, and self-improvement were always key pillars in life, but his understanding of them deepened over time. He came to realize that fitness is self-improvement, and self-improvement is a never-ending pursuit. Mastering one area only reveals the next challenge. It’s a process of deep internal work and life will meet you as far as you're willing to go. When VNFITTED was born, Valentine wasn’t at his personal peak.

He was “mentally, emotionally, and spiritually lost”, surrounded by the wrong influences and stuck in unhealthy cycles. He was slowly making progress, but not enough. For Valentine, VNFITTED became the knife he used to cut through the noise, the dead weight and the excuses. It gave him structure, purpose, focus and forced him to evolve into the person he needed to become.

Today, that transformation sits at the heart of the VNFITTED ethos. The brand encourages people to "move different"—to think differently, act differently, and live with intention. It’s a reminder that if you can control your mind, you can change your life. That simple. The phrase “move different” can be seen printed across several pieces in the collection, always paired with bold graphics and distinctive design. VNFITTED offers a curated range of activewear and lifestyle essentials for both men and women—built for movement, mindset, and daily discipline.

From premium hoodies and tracksuits to formfitting leggings, bodysuits, jackets, sports bras, and crops—the apparel is crafted to serve both performance and comfort. The current standout? The Heavy Basic Tracksuits—a fan-favorite staple for autumn and winter, with new colorways on the way. In a crowded market of activewear, VNFITTED stands apart by honouring what most brands overlook: the mental reps. It’s not just about what you wear when you train—it’s about why you train in the first place. This brand is here for those who live with intention, strive for better, and are willing to do the deep work.

MADELINE CARDONE

ART OF THE NUANCED AND THE IMPERFECT

Madeline Cardone’s creative world is one where architecture, nature, culture, and the fluidity of materials converge to tell stories that resonate deeply with both the eye and the soul. With her distinctive glass and ceramic works, she crafts pieces that not only capture light and shadow but also invite a more intimate, personal experience from every viewer. From her time as a student at the ANU School of Art & Design, to her recent award in Milan, Madeline’s art practice has been a path of discovery, connection, and constant evolution.

Her relationship with glass as an artistic medium was a natural but unexpected occurrence. Though starting with a Bachelor's degree in Art History at university, she really craved an opportunity to make. She enrolled in a glass elective at the School of Art & Design, which, she says, was a decision that would shape her life’s path. “After two weeks, I realised it was definitely my medium,” Madeline recalls.

She went on to graduate with an Honours in Visual Arts, majoring in glass, fully immersing herself into the challenges and potentials of this material. The medium continues to captivate for its beauty, mystery, and its ability to capture the interplay of light, form, and texture. Madeline works in predominantly black glass to explore this connection through a lens that highlights the emotional power of shadow and light.

This spirit of discovery is central to Madeline’s creative process. Rather than relying on fixed ideas or rigid plans, she allows the materials to guide her, embracing the process of exploration as much as the finished product. This sense of openness is what drives her work and gives it such a unique, organic, and human feel. It’s a reflection of her broader philosophy of life: to stay open, stay curious, and let things unfold naturally.

When it comes to the balance between tradition and contemporary glass practices in her work, Madeline draws inspiration from the rich history of glassmaking, particularly the post-war Scandinavian period. During this time, artists began to push the boundaries of glass design, creating bold, textured works that played with light and mass. Madeline’s work is a contemporary take on these traditions.

She uses mould-making, sandblasting, and even printmaking techniques to craft her pieces. “There’s a beauty in blending the old with the new,” she says. “Tradition adds depth, and new techniques allow for evolution.” This combination of techniques results in pieces that feel timeless yet relevant, honouring the past while embracing the possibilities of the future.

A pivotal moment in Madeline’s emerging artistic practice was when she was shortlisted in the Milano Vetro Under 35 Glass Art and Design Biennial Prize in Milan. Among 20 finalists from around the world, she was the recipient of the main prize, in which the Museum acquired her work for their permanent collection. Upon reflecting on the work, Madeline explains that the piece marked a moment in her practice that was all about letting go of material outcome.

“I didn’t have a plan for how it would look, I used my knowledge of the properties and characteristics of the material, but ultimately I let it take its shape autonomously in the kiln.” The piece was about discovery, about allowing the material to evolve in unexpected ways, mirroring how we move through life: fluidly, with often no fixed path or outcome.

FLUIDITY, DISCOVERY AND CONNECTION

Throughout her career, Madeline has faced the challenges many artists experience: the struggle to balance personal practice with the financial realities of life. She acknowledges that, especially in the early years, many artists must put their passion aside to make a living. However, Madeline has learned that it’s the connections she’s made within the artistic community that keep her motivated. Even when not actively creating, being surrounded by like-minded people is what fuels her passion. “It’s about the community,” she says. “You don’t always have to be making; being in a space where people inspire you is just as important.”

Her collaboration with Ni-Wares reflects this philosophy of connection. Hany Ezzat, the founder of NiWares, approached Madeline with the design for a cup for filter coffee that would emphasise and improve the tasting experience. It was a fascinating challenge for Madeline, and she embraced the process of experimentation and prototyping. Through a process of 3D printing, mold making and slip casting with clay, the final product was the first of its kind; one that fulfilled its entire purpose and function, but also being aesthetically beautiful. Madeline values this collaboration as one that further refined her skills and understanding of clay, but also brought about a connection with another creative mind who equally valued the importance of pushing boundaries, in materials and in the industry.

Madeline established Studio Vessl as an extension of her artistic practice. It encompasses small batch functional and wearable objects in mostly ceramic and in metal. “I love creating things that people can use and enjoy in their everyday lives, and it’s also a way that I can connect with my community and collaborate with like minded businesses, which is really exciting and important to me”.

The play on the word “vessel” connects to her constant idea that the body is central to how we move through the world, and how we relate to ourselves and other people. It’s about holding and being held.

The vessel is not just an object; it's a means of connection. The act of creating custom pieces, especially jewellery, allows her to form a more intimate link with the wearer. Her pieces, often released as limited collaborations, are not only about aesthetics but also about how they fit into

your world—how they enhance your personal experience. In her jewellery, she finds a delicate balance between affordable, functional wear and the preciousness of meaningful design.Madeline’s approach to her work, whether in glass, ceramics, or jewellery, emphasises individuality and experimentation over conformity. “Trends come and go, but people will always relate to something that speaks to them, something unique—whether it’s art on a wall or an object in your hands.

The key is to be authentic and intentional.” Looking to the future, Madeline’s goals remain as dynamic as her work. She aims to travel, connect with new environments and minds, and establish a studio of her own. She’d like to delve into the interior design and architectural realms, where her art can live amongst the living.

For Madeline Cardone, the path is ever growing and ever changing. While she’s excited about what the future holds, she’s also content in the present, enjoying the process of continuous evolution. With her eyes always open and her mind on new possibilities, it’s clear that the best is yet to come.

RUSTEN HOUSE ART CENTRE

NURTURING LOCAL ARTISTRY

Filled with hidden gems just waiting to be uncovered, Queanbeyan has long been a city that nurtures and inspires regional artistry. With galleries, art workshops and public art conveniently located in and around the central business district, the city is brimming with surprises at every turn.

Rusten House Art Centre is one of the latest additions of recent years to the city’s cultural landscape. Following careful restoration works, the beautiful NSW Heritage listed venue was first opened to the public as a community art centre and gallery in 2021.

STANDING TALL THROUGH THE TEST OF TIME

Rusten House began its life in 1862 as Queanbeyan’s second hospital, the original being a small building on the eastern side of the Queanbeyan River. Originally accommodating 16 patients, the hospital and its services were largely funded by local fundraising initiatives and kind-hearted members of the local community who formed the Queanbeyan and District Hospital Society in 1846. The society was comprised of many prominent residents from the region, the Gales, Campbells, Rutledges, Colletts, and Wrights, who had long associations with the hospital and establishment of the region – as is evident through the names of local streets and parks to this day.

The continued growth of the population in the region saw many additions and alterations to the hospital’s facilities and grounds, such as the plantation of large pines, oaks and elms and the construction of a washhouse and the ‘Fever Ward’ to protect patients from highly infectious diseases, such as typhoid epidemics and the Spanish flu pandemic of 1919. Rusten House remained the region’s main hospital up until 1914 when another facility was opened in Canberra. The space was converted into nurses’ quarters following the construction of a new hospital in 1933. The new facility was in high demand by the capital’s growing population until a larger hospital was built to service the ACT.

When Rusten House ceased to be used as nurses’ quarters, it went on to house a variety of allied health services and even Rusty’s Café at one point in time. While the building had started to decline and had many alterations and additions, it was clearly an important part of Queanbeyan’s history. In 1988, a permanent conservation order was placed on Rusten House and the original hospital building and its landscape setting was included on the NSW State Heritage Register in 1999.

A NEW LEASE ON LIFE

Breathing new life into the historically significant building, Rusten House was painstakingly restored and revitalised over nine years, re-opening four years ago as an art centre and gallery to showcase the region’s array of talented artists. The beautiful restoration created a series of gallery spaces which now showcase a rotating program of exhibitions.

The monthly exhibitions vary between artist-initiated shows and specially curated exhibitions, each launching with a celebratory opening event where visitors can meet the artists and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Throughout the year, the art centre also offers special programs, such as artist talks and demonstrations. Save the date for October, when the annual Queanbeyan-Palerang Arts Trail brings the galleries and gardens alive with the arts through a program of exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more. With past exhibitions ranging from sculptures, prints and paintings to quilts, tea towels and more, the centre offers a diverse selection of art to discover and explore.

Rusten House is accessible for visitors with mobility requirements with one accessible parking bay available (approx. 12 metres from the main door and workshop door), ramps provided at entry points as well as an accessible toilet inside the building. The space also features resting chairs in the Reading Room Gallery, free public WiFi and drinking water available for visitors. The car park offers limited parking spaces and all day parking is available on the adjoining Collett St.

FROM POST-WAR ITALY TO A BRIGHT FUTURE IN QUEANBEYAN

HOW THE EARLY WAVES OF EUROPEAN MIGRANTS SHAPED QUEANBEYAN'S FOUNDATIONS

When Mario Curtotti and Rosanna De Sinno arrived in Australia in 1966 aboard the Guglielmo Marconi, they brought with them little more than ten shillings, a Collins English-Italian dictionary and the true wealth of migrants: resilience, a fierce work ethic, and an unbreakable belief in the future. Like many Italian families who came to Queanbeyan during the great waves of post-war migration, they weren’t just seeking a better life — they were determined to build one from the ground up. In doing so, families like theirs helped lay the very foundations of the thriving Queanbeyan we know today. Mario and Rosanna were both born in San Severo, a thousand-year-old city in the plains of southern Italy. San Severo had always been a place of farmers and artisans, where wheat, grapes, olives, and generations of tradition grew side by side. But when Mario was born in 1942, and Rosanna in 1945, Italy was a country devastated by war.

In their early years, they knew only hardship. Mario grew up one of seven siblings and when his father passed away, Mario had no choice but to start working at just 10 years old. The labour was back-breaking and the expectations heavy — there was no easy road for children in post-war Italy. Rosanna’s upbringing, though surrounded by the love of her parents, was also marked by deprivation. A bright and capable student, she dreamed of continuing her education. But in a time when sending all children to school was a luxury many could not afford, Rosanna’s schooling ended after the fifth grade.

Despite these hardships, they found each other and fell in love in true cinematic style. Mario first saw Rosanna one day as she stood on her balcony. It was love at first sight. They married in Pompeii and began their life together, soon welcoming two sons into their small but loving home. They tried to make a living by opening a small delicatessen, but it was a hard struggle. Each day’s earnings were just enough to keep food on the table — but never enough to build a future. Encouraged by Mario’s sister Vittorina, who had recently migrated and settled in Queanbeyan, Mario and Rosanna made the bravest decision of their lives. In 1966, they left everything they knew behind and set sail with their two sons and another child on the way.

They spent the last of their savings on first class tickets as a symbolic gesture of confidence in the future and they arrived in Australia with 10 shillings but with unlimited resources which would help them in the coming years. Queanbeyan, like much of Australia at the time, was a place of promise. Jobs were plentiful, but success was never handed out — it was earned through grit and relentless effort. Without a word of English beyond what their pocket dictionary could provide, Mario and Rosanna set out to carve their own path. They knew poverty very well and would sacrifice whatever was necessary to leave it behind. Mario took up gruelling work in concrete, Rosanna sewed dresses for little pay, then later then taught herself curtain-making skills which she would turn into a thriving business within the growing Queanbeyan community.

They lived modestly, took large loans from banks, and began building their first home. As their children went to school, they began building other houses over time. For their children, weekends and school holidays were spent mixing mortar, carrying bricks, and pushing wheelbarrows for whatever construction project the family was undertaking at the time. It was hard work, but also a lesson in resilience, teamwork, and sacrifice — the same values that were helping shape Queanbeyan’s community as it expanded. Over time, Mario and Rosanna moved from building homes to building factories. They reinvested what they earned, growing not only their own fortunes but contributing to the physical growth of Queanbeyan itself. They were part of a wave of Italian migrants who laid the very bricks and mortar of the town’s expansion during a period of enormous growth.

Later in life, Mario and Rosanna settled on a farm in Hoskingstown, just outside Queanbeyan. When most people were planning a quiet retirement, Mario was becoming a farmer and Rosanna took on a role running the family rural supplies store in Bungendore, alongside her youngest son and his family. To those who had known them only as city people, the farm was an unexpected move, but it symbolised the completion of the journey they had started back in 1966. What Italy had denied them, Australia had allowed them to create with their own hands.

Families like the Curtottis didn’t just build houses, factories, and farms; they built a community. Their values of hard work, family, and resilience became part of Queanbeyan’s foundation. Theirs is the story of countless European migrants who came to Queanbeyan and helped build it from the ground up. They brought their traditions, foods, craftsmanship, and above all, their unwavering spirit. They transformed the city not just physically, but culturally and spiritually, into the warm, vibrant, and welcoming place it is today. Their journey is a reminder that while the migrant experience is often marked by hardship and sacrifice, it is also a story of triumph — not just for the migrants themselves, but for the towns and cities they help to build. Today, when we walk through Queanbeyan’s streets, past its homes, schools, factories, and surrounding rural farms, we are walking among the living legacy of migrants who came with little but gave everything. Their spirit, etched into every brick and every field, continues to shape the soul of Queanbeyan for the future.

EXPLORE EUROPEAN HERITAGE ON THE GLENBURN HERITAGE PRECINCT TRAIL

VISIT QUEANBEYAN - PALERANG

Queanbeyan - Image: Adam McGrath for Visit Queanbeyan-Palerang [QPRC]

Conveniently located along the Kings Highway between Queanbeyan and Bungendore lies the Glenburn Heritage Precinct. Offering visitors a glimpse into the lives of the first European settlers of the region, the precinct is well worth the visit for those interested in the European heritage of Australia.

The precinct is made up of three trails linking 16 heritage sites –choose from the 10km Glenburn Heritage Trail, the 10km Burbong Heritage Trail, or the 12km Precinct Loop Trail, which combines the two separate trails into one big loop through most of the heritage sites of the precinct.

Whether you’re looking for a day walk or a new trail to hit with your mountain bike, all three trails are suitable for both walkers and cyclists and offer the perfect spot for an active morning or afternoon outdoors, just a stone’s throw from the city.

The Glenburn Heritage Precinct is accessed from the Kings Highway, about 10km from Queanbeyan, or 16.5km from Bungendore. The precinct itself is located in Kowen Forest in ACT and as such is managed by ACT Parks and Conservation Service in collaboration with the National Parks Association of the ACT and Friends of Glenburn.

To get to the trail head, follow the signposts along the highway and park at the Glenburn Precinct car park, on Charcoal Kiln Road. Next to the car park, you’ll find trail head signage, featuring a map of the area and information on the trails available. You’ll also be able to grab a copy of the Glenburn Heritage Precinct brochure from the brochure holder next to the trail signage to ensure you stay on track throughout your journey.

The three trails are colour coded and clearly marked, and they all start with a short stroll up the management road on Charcoal Kiln Road. Once you reach the junction of Atkinsons Road and Charcoal Kiln Road, choose which trail you’d like to take on. To get to the Glenburn heritage sites, keep walking along Charcoal Kiln Road, or turn left onto Atkinsons Road to get to the Burbong sites.

Local wildlife - Image: Adam McGrath for Visit QueanbeyanPalerang [QPRC]
Mountain biking - Image: Alfonso Calero for Visit QueanbeyanPalerang [QPRC]

If you follow the green trail markings, you’ll make your way through the full Glenburn Heritage Loop Trail. The loop is about 12km, taking approximately four hours on foot, or two hours on a mountain bike. It passes most of the heritage sites within the Glenburn and Burbong areas, including the Glenburn Homestead, the Glenburn Shearing Quarters and Shearing Shed, and the old Kowen School Site, as well as Atkinson Trig, Colliers Homestead Ruins and Orchard, and the Colverwell graves, which are some of the oldest graves found in the Canberra region, dating back to 1837.

The remaining relics paint a vivid picture of the lives of the early European settlers, while the trail signage at each heritage site delves deeper into different aspects of 19th century wool production, mining and charcoal fuel production, as well as the lifestyles of the people who inhabited the area at the time. In fact, in 2015, the Glenburn Heritage Precinct was entered on the ACT Heritage Register as an excellent example of a 19th century pastoral landscape. The trail traverses through management trails and evergreen forests past Molonglo River and Glen Burn Creek. Along the way, you are likely to spot plenty of wildlife, particularly kangaroos as you walk along the creek.

TIPS FOR THE TRAIL

Queanbeyan River Walk - Image: Alfonso Calero for Visit Queanbeyan-Palerang [QPRC]

While the trails are well suited for most and make up for a good walk all year round, it is good to keep in mind that a moderate level of fitness is required, as the trail traverses up and down hills and over shallow creeks. Not only will you have to cross the creek at times, you may also come across waterlogged parts along the trail after wet weather, so wearing sturdy, enclosed shoes such as hiking boots is well worth it. When planning your visit, you should also note that there are no bins or toilets provided.

For your safety, please also make sure to stay on the trail at all times and take extra care to not enter the Canberra International Clay Target Club, the adjacent farm or other adjacent private leases. While most of the walk is well signposted to keep you on the trail, make sure to keep right as you pass Colliers Homestead Ruins back towards the car park along Atkinsons Road to ensure you stay on the trail and don’t veer off towards the shooting range.

Your pets are also welcomed to join you on the trail, but only on leads, as livestock graze some of the areas around the precinct. Last but not least, make sure to take in the panoramic views over Molonglo River, across the precinct and onto the hills along the ACT/NSW border.

If you have more time to spend in the region, explore more of the area surrounding Queanbeyan by taking on the Blue Tiles walk at Molonglo Gorge. Also located in Kowen Forest, this hidden gem traverses through unspoiled bush, cascades and pools along the Molonglo River. Alternatively, if you’re eager to get back into town, head out to Queanbeyan and take the Queanbeyan River Walk.

This leisurely stroll around the Queanbeyan River is the perfect way to spend an hour or two getting to know the town better. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore, as the trail goes past numerous shops, cafes and galleries along the way.

Finally, if you’re looking for more activities, Googong Foreshores is the way to go. The Foreshores are located just a quick drive from Queanbeyan but play host to a range of activities from bushwalks and barbeques to kayaking, mountain biking and fishing.

HANDS ACROSS CANBERRA

BUILDING A BETTER COMMUNITY TOGETHER

In the heart of our nation’s capital lies a foundation dedicated to uniting generosity with need: Hands Across Canberra (HAC). Established in 2010 by a visionary group of Canberra leaders, HAC is Canberra’s independent community foundation, working tirelessly to support and uplift over 350 local charities and community service organisations. With a clear mission to address pressing community challenges and foster a culture of giving, HAC is the bridge between those in need and those willing to help.

Since its inception, Hands Across Canberra has distributed over $6 million in grants, impacting thousands of lives across the region. These grants, funded through the generosity of individuals, businesses, and community leaders, empower organisations to provide essential support to Canberra’s most vulnerable individuals and families. From emergency assistance to capacity-building programs, HAC ensures that help reaches the front lines where it is needed most.

At the heart of Hands Across Canberra is the belief that giving back should be simple, impactful, and locally focused. Their innovative platform provides an accessible and secure way for Canberrans to engage in philanthropy. Whether contributing to the community as a whole or donating directly to a preferred charity, HAC’s portal ensures every dollar stays within Canberra, helping to build a stronger, more connected community.

Beyond financial support, Hands Across Canberra plays a vital role in fostering collaboration among charities, donors, and businesses. By driving highimpact solutions to community problems, building organisational capacity, and championing the spirit of generosity, HAC is not just tackling immediate needs but also creating a sustainable future for Canberra’s community sector.

As Diane Kargas AM, former Chair of Hands Across Canberra and Canberra Citizen of the Year, aptly puts it: “Hands Across Canberra encourages individuals to invest in the future of their community. The Foundation enables charities to access much-needed funds and resources to protect the most vulnerable – now and in the future.”

HAC’s work is guided by a long-term vision to provide enduring support through its perpetual endowment fund. By building a permanent resource base, the foundation ensures that Canberrans can continue to address evolving community needs for generations to come. Hands Across Canberra also stands out for its commitment to inclusivity. The foundation embraces the “unfashionable” causes, recognising that all forms of need deserve attention. From encouraging new forms of social investment to offering leadership and coordination, HAC is redefining philanthropy in the capital.

This year, Q Living Magazine is honoured to partner with Hands Across Canberra to introduce a meaningful new fundraising initiative which will also provide an advertising opportunity for larger businesses and corporations. This entails setting aside a limited number of pages in each edition that can be purchased as advertising space for $1000 per page. The full amount of this purchase is then donated straight to Hands Across Canberra, supporting over 350 local charities. The following pages showcase some of Canberra's most outstanding businesses who have contributed to our initiative. Thanks to these businesses and through our partnership, Hands Across Canberra has received a donation of $14,000 from this Q Living edition.

If you believe in giving where you live and want to contribute to a better, more compassionate Canberra, now is the time to act. Use the QR code to donate and make a tangible difference in the lives of your fellow Canberrans today. Together, we can lend a helping hand and build a brighter future for our community.

100 YEARS OF BUILDING CANBERRA

Master Builders ACT is celebrating a remarkable century of building Canberra in 2025, marking its status as the oldest member association in the capital. From a blank slate in 1925, Canberra has grown from fledgling to thriving, built on the incredibly hard work of Master Builders members. It is fascinating to look back at old images of Canberra’s early days to see early roads and buildings being constructed using primitive machinery and manual labor. The early days were not luxurious, with tradesmen accommodated in primitive workers’ huts.

Many of Canberra’s earliest buildings are still standing, with some undergoing upgrades to celebrate their heritage role while allowing the community to continue enjoying them. The Sydney and Melbourne buildings are a great example. Built in 1925 and opened to much fanfare by the Prime Minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce in 1926, these beautiful buildings were built originally by Master Builders Simmie & Co and have undergone multiple rounds of renovations to preserve and improve them.

Over the past 100 years, the Association has grown to include more than 1,000 members and has been instrumental in the city’s development, advocating for a strong building and construction industry while supporting initiatives that promote quality and innovation. Significant moments in its history include the recovery efforts following the devastating 2003 bushfires, and as the Association looks to the future, it remains committed to addressing issues like gender diversity and housing needs for Canberrans. From humble beginnings as a member association with just ten members, to becoming the trusted voice for builders and tradespeople, the history of MBA ACT reflects a commitment to excellence and a dedication to supporting the growth of the industry.

A special publication will be released on August 18, commemorating the inaugural meeting held at the Hotel Canberra (now Hyatt) in 1925, where ten builders came together to establish what would become the Master Builders Association of the Federal Capital Territory. The centenary celebrations will feature two major events: the Master Builders and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards on 5 September, which will mark 34 years of the top awards program for recognising excellence in the ACT building industry, and a Centenary Dinner on 7 November, presented by The Village Building Company, uniting past and present members along with leaders in the building and construction sector to honour a century of achievements.
