miss heidi’s teahouse

cooma, nsw

Heidi’s Teahouse was designed and built in the late 1960s by Wolfgang and Heidi Zahluer. The construction work was aided by workers from the original Snowy Mountains Scheme, an iconic project that brought many skilled labourers to the region. Interestingly, Wolfgang and Heidi were on the same ship when they first arrived in Australia, though they did not meet until many years later. Their shared journey and eventual partnership in life and business add a layer of serendipity to the story of Heidi’s Teahouse.

In 1969, Heidi’s Teahouse officially opened as the Fairy Tale Park and Teahouse. This whimsical attraction featured a magical trail through the nearby bushland, lined with beautiful statues and little stone cottages depicting scenes from classic fairy tales. For many years, the Fairy Tale Park was a beloved attraction in the heart of Cooma, warming the hearts of children and adults alike. Visitors could immerse themselves in a fairy tale world, walking among charming replicas of iconic stories like Cinderella, Snow White, and Hansel and Gretel.

Unfortunately, some years later the beloved Fairy Tale Park was vandalized and could never be fully repaired due to cost and the broken hearts of Wolf and Heidi. Despite this loss, remnants of the park still exist today. Hansel and Gretel’s cottage can still be found along the old fairy tale park trail, standing as a testament to the park’s enchanting past. Additionally, some statues and fragments of the original park remain scattered along the trail through the bushland. This trail continues to be a worthwhile visit for those who wish to experience a touch of magic and nostalgia amidst the natural beauty of the area.

miss heidi’s teahouse

Heidi’s Teahouse itself is a rare gem, offering a range of traditional, homemade Austrian delicacies within a charming, cottage-style restaurant. The large open fireplace provides a cozy ambiance, particularly welcome during the frosty winter months. Among the most popular items on the menu are the Austrian Pancakes and Homemade Apple Strudel, both made by Heidi from old family recipes passed down through generations. The pancakes are fluffy and served with a generous helping of fruit and cream, while the apple strudel boasts a perfect balance of sweet and tart, encased in a flaky, golden pastry. Another must-try item is the traditional Veal Schnitzel, which can be enjoyed with a pint of Austrian beer, offering a hearty and satisfying meal that reflects the authentic flavors of Austria.

miss heidi’s teahouse

Surrounding the teahouse, visitors can enjoy stunning views over the Mount Gladstone lookout. This vantage point provides a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal spot for photography and quiet reflection.

The serene bushland trail that once hosted the Fairy Tale Park offers a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As you stroll through this picturesque setting, you’ll find yourself immersed in nature’s tranquillity, with the added charm of discovering the remnants of a bygone era.

Heidi’s Teahouse is more than just a place to enjoy delicious food; it is a living piece of history and a tribute to the dream of its founders. Wolfgang and Heidi’s story is one of resilience and passion, reflected in every aspect of the teahouse and its surroundings. The legacy of the Fairy Tale Park continues to enchant visitors, offering a glimpse into a world where imagination and reality once seamlessly intertwined.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor passing through Cooma, Heidi’s Teahouse is a destination that promises a unique and memorable experience. The combination of delightful Austrian cuisine, a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and the enchanting remnants of the Fairy Tale Park create a place that captures the hearts of all who visit. So, take a trip to Heidi’s Teahouse, enjoy a slice of apple strudel, and let yourself be transported to a time and place where fairy tales come to life.

wildbrumby distillery

crackenback, nsw

Nestled in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Wildbrumby Distillery has been creating high-quality spirits since 2003 and is renowned for its award-winning schnapps, gin and vodka.

Its location in the Thredbo Valley provides pristine mountain water, enhancing the quality of their spirits, while the stunning scenery attracts many visitors. The distillery emphasizes sustainability, using locally sourced ingredients and eco-friendly practices. Wildbrumby is celebrated for its innovative approach, frequently experimenting with new flavours and techniques, offering limited edition and seasonal releases. Their spirits have earned numerous accolades, reflecting their commitment to excellence.

Visitors can enjoy free tastings, and a cafe serving locally sourced food paired with cocktails, made with the Wildbrumby spirit range. Combining quality, sustainability, and innovation, Wildbrumby Distillery offers a distinctive experience in the heart of the Snowy Mountains.

It was in the Austrian Region of Kitzbühel that Wildbrumby founder, Brad Spalding, met his future wife, Monika, whose family had been distilling schnapps long before the couple were born. Enchanted by this rich distilling heritage, Brad studied the traditional distilling methods and then set out to introduce schnapps to Australia’s Snowy region. Traditional methods developed over many centuries, combined with exclusive access to home-grown organic fruit and botanicals, are the inspiration behind Wildbrumby’s line of liqueur schnapps much loved here in Australia. The fruit is sourced from both the adjacent raspberry farm, and from local producers in the Tumut, Batlow and Snowy Mountains Region. Apples, pears, berries and stone fruit are of the highest quality with rich flavours especially suited to making schnapps.

How a classic Wildbrumby schnapps is made

1.Fruit

Firstly, the best local fruit that the team can lay their hands on is meticulously selected. Wildbrumby also grow their own organic raspberries in a small patch behind the distillery.

2.Crushing

The fruit is sliced, diced and machine-processed to remove stones and pips. Crushing the fruit pulp is necessary for fermentation to take place, working as much as possible with the “wild yeast” naturally occurring within the fruit itself.

3.Fermentation

The crushed fruit pulp is then fermented in vats, at controlled temperatures in a cool room. This process normally takes around 4 weeks, but timing really depends on the sugar content of the fruit. The process is very similar to that used in winemaking.

4.Distillation

The fermented pulp is then loaded into the imported still and distilled. This is a critical point in the process, necessary for producing crisp, clean schnapps. The double boiler (at the bottom of the still) boils the fermented pulp (wash) to about 90 degrees. The vapour rises through the 5 chambers, then condenses back into liquid (which is now the spirit), and then passes through the cooling chamber and out of the nozzles at 80-90% in alcohol level. This is then blended down with the pristine alpine water that is unique to the Snowy Mountains Region and bottled onsite.

Located near the serene Lake Crackenback, the distillery is a perfect destination for those seeking both relaxation and adventure.

A highlight of Wildbrumby is its enchanting sculpture walk, featuring a variety of stunning artworks, set amidst beautifully landscaped gardens. Visitors can wander through the grounds, admiring sculptures crafted by local and international artists, adding a cultural and artistic dimension to the natural beauty of the area.

As you stroll through the stillhouse cafe and sculpture garden, you will see many works which engage with the alpine landscapes of the Snowy Mountains.

Contemplative themes on the natural world and environmental sustainability are thread throughout the Wildbrumby collection, prompting us to look more closely at the world around us and appreciate the beauty, strength and fragility of the landscape.

Many of the sculptures repurpose natural or discarded materials and natural, ground mineral pigments.

Brad and Monika Spalding have actively fostered and collaborated with artists, hosting artist residencies here at Wildbrumby, and many of the works in the sculpture garden are the fruits of these residencies.

As a celebrated local artist, Brad Spalding has made art central to the spirit and workings of Wildbrumby.

So stroll through the sculptures with the whole family and venture to the Wild Sculpture Walk. Roll down the hill after the Orbs, listen to the rattle of Yellow’s carbon fibre reeds, cuddle a Buisman rock and sit and contemplate with the Bowerbird Nest.

In addition to the sculpture walk, Wildbrumby Distillery provides an immersive experience with free tastings. Guests can learn about the distillation process and the history behind Wildbrumby’s award-winning schnapps and gin. The on-site cafe serves delicious, locally sourced food, which pairs perfectly with the distillery’s spirits.

The surrounding area offers a wealth of attractions and activities. Lake Crackenback is ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and swimming. Nearby, Kosciuszko National Park provides opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and in Winter, skiing and snowboarding at Mount Kosciuszko. Thredbo Village, a short drive away, offers a vibrant atmosphere with additional skiing, hiking, dining, and shopping options. The town of Jindabyne, with Lake Jindabyne, is perfect for boating and fishing.

At Wildbrumby Distillery, the mission is simple yet profound: to craft exceptional spirits of unparalleled quality. The team meticulously source the finest fruits and spices, handpicked for their exceptional flavour profiles. Employing a blend of traditional methods and state-ofthe-art equipment, they ensure that every drop of their spirits embodies the essence of their dedication.

Central to the Wildbrumby distilling process is the pristine mountain spring water that is used for blending, imbuing their creations with a purity that elevates the tasting experience. But their commitment doesn’t end there. The Wildbrumby team are equally passionate about preserving the breathtaking beauty of the Snowy Mountains. That’s why they have embraced an eco-friendly approach to operations, minimizing their environmental footprint while maximizing sustainability.

The combination of exquisite spirits, captivating art, and breathtaking scenery makes Wildbrumby Distillery a must-visit destination in the Snowy Mountains. Whether you’re exploring the artistic sculptures, savouring the locally produced schnapps and gin, or enjoying the outdoor adventures in the surrounding area, Wildbrumby offers a truly unique and enriching experience.

rushe photography gallery

In the picturesque country town of Bungendore, NSW, is the beautiful boutique gallery of award-winning photographer Jerusha McDowell.

Rushe photography gallery offers a stunning selection of fine art landscape and equine works as well as a range of cards and giftware. Located within The Malbon on the main street, you can also take a stroll around the antique shops, homewares and nursery within.

Internationally recognised for her work Jerusha McDowell is an award-winning photographer based in Bungendore, NSW. Her work has a poetic quality deeply rooted in visual storytelling.

For Jerusha, her photography career was born out of an innate need to create, and a desire to live a simpler life, more present as a parent and more connected to the things she loves. Jerusha studied photography and filmmaking at the University of NSW and later returned to photography following a very different career in national security.

Two years ago, she made the decision to resign from her career in the Australian Defence and Intelligence community to focus on photography full-time. About a year later, she opened the gallery, leaving behind a successful career that she had devoted so much of herself to. She recalls this as one of the hardest decisions she has ever made, but in the end, it felt more like an inevitability than a choice.

Reflecting on her journey, Jerusha feels as though she has come full circle back to something she was always meant to do, albeit taking the long way around.

She spent fifteen years working in the Australian Defence and Intelligence community, which allowed her to travel and work with extraordinary people, doing extraordinary things. Despite the interesting and rewarding nature of her work, it left her mentally and physically exhausted. Transitioning back to photography has allowed Jerusha to return to the things that give her life meaning and balance.

Photography teaches many things: patience, the art of observation, and above all, perspective. Jerusha understands the power of perspective and the ability to change it.

For her, photography has been an important anchor, providing the discipline and solitude needed to recalibrate. Establishing her gallery in Bungendore is particularly important because it allows her work to realize its full potential.

While the digital world is vast and offers photographers a platform to showcase their work, Jerusha believes a photograph isn’t truly complete until it is printed, framed, and presented. She values the journey of a photograph from the decisions made during its capture, through the editing process, to the printing, framing, and exhibiting. The gallery allows her work to reach this final destination.

rushe photography gallery

The “Common Threads” exhibition was the latest exhibition showcased at The Rushe Photography Gallery inside The Malbon. The exhibition was a joint venture between Jerusha and acclaimed woven sculpture artist, Linda Coomber.

The exhibition brought together the shared elements of both their mediums in a celebration of tone and texture, landscape and form. Linda’s work is exquisite, combining unique natural materials into beautiful, often functional works.

One of her signature materials is naturally shed deer antlers, which she uses as handles and frames for handwoven baskets. Linda loves the idea of bringing the natural world into our interiors.

Jerusha notes that their work shares many common elements despite being in different mediums, and a collaborative show is something she has wanted to do at the gallery for some time. She is thrilled to finally have been able to do it, and the exhibition has been a huge success.

rushe photography gallery

Jerusha’s favorite project is her current ongoing documentary series titled “Where The Snowy Mountain Stockmen Used To Ride,” capturing a vanishing legacy of horsemanship in the Snowy Mountains. This project continues to be one of the great creative adventures of her life. The heritage and traditions of mountain horsemanship are etched in Australian folklore. Though numbers are dwindling, there are still those for whom the mountains are a way of life. This project explores a world beyond the confines and complexity of the modern world, offering a photographic journey into the mountains to document a vanishing legacy of high country horsemanship and bushcraft.

The project began simply as an excuse to ride horses and shoot beautiful, remote landscapes with her friend, guide, and subject, Mark. However, it quickly evolved into something much more significant. Jerusha has been overwhelmed with how this project has been received so far, having been published and received a number of awards, including a Top 5 in the International Photography Awards. Shooting in the mountains is never easy, as the weather changes quickly, the riding is hard, and the environment is harsh and unforgiving, especially on sensitive camera equipment. Despite these challenges, these are the projects that artists dream about. For Jerusha, the challenge in documentary photography is always navigating the delicate balance between being a storyteller and a witness, and between capturing authenticity and perspective. She loves the idea that documentary photography can still be beautiful, creative, authentic, and faithful.

Jerusha offers insightful advice to young aspiring photographers who wish to follow a similar path. She emphasizes that photography is about more than pictures; it’s about revealing things unseen and showing people something through your eyes. As a photographer, your connection to a subject is the defining characteristic of your storytelling.

In the age of social media, presets, and AI, it is relatively easy to take good quality pictures and edit them. However, much of what is out there is simply a copy of a copy, with people trying to create something that looks like what’s already popular.

This, she believes, is the death of storytelling and creative expression. Jerusha advises aspiring photographers to focus on what they want to say and what they have to offer.

Finding your own voice and style is the biggest challenge and journey as an artist. Her advice is to keep going, as photography is a tough game that takes time for you to start trusting your own instincts and stop looking to emulate others. Once you do, it’s a never-ending process of learning, discovery, expression, and evolution. Creativity is a strange, unaccountable thing, but persistence and self-trust are key.

Looking to the future, Jerusha is excited about the possibilities for Rushe Photography. Finishing the Snowy Mountains project is her main focus creatively this year. She is thrilled with where this work is taking her both professionally and creatively. There will definitely be a film component to the project, and she is excited to begin that.

At present, she and her team are still working through some logistical issues, such as carrying video equipment on horses, but this challenge excites her.

Jerusha has always loved the feeling of testing her limits, believing that finding your limits— physically, mentally, and creatively—helps you discover the true measure of yourself and what you are capable of. The work she is doing now pushes all of these limits, and she is really excited about that.

At the gallery, Jerusha is looking forward to hosting more guest artists and engaging in more collaborations. She will also be running workshops later in the year, which she anticipates will be fun. The success of the gallery has been incredibly rewarding, with more and more visitors from across the region and beyond.

Jerusha is part of a beautiful community of artists and galleries in Bungendore. Her gallery is part of The Malbon, an incredible local business collective that brings together local businesses and artisans. This amazing community has provided her with friendships and creative partnerships with incredible people who inspire her endlessly.

Jerusha is genuinely excited about the future of The Malbon as it continues to grow and evolve, much like her own artistic journey.

flowers with love

In the quaint town of Jerrabomberra lies a floral haven that embodies the essence of passion, creativity, and timeless beauty. ‘Flowers with Love’ was established by Lisa in 1993 and has become a testament to a lifelong love for flowers and an unwavering dedication to the craft.

flowers with love

Lisa’s journey into the world of floristry began at Pialligo Plant Farm’s dried flower shop in the mid-1980s, where she delved into the craft, honing her skills, which led to a lifelong passion for dried flowers. Lisa’s journey continued with formal education in floristry at the School of Horticulture, culminating in the achievement of a Certificate IV in Floristry.

In 1993, Flowers with Love was born. Weekends were spent showcasing her creations at markets, offering meticulously crafted arrangements and wreaths. Weddings became another avenue for expression, blending fresh and dried flowers into captivating bouquets and arrangements.

The 1990s marked a pivotal period for the business as she ventured into bridal magazine collaborations, designing wedding bouquets and headpieces, which graced the covers and pages of many of these publications.

Building a business from the ground up is never easy. Lisa recalls putting in relentless effort and long hours, often with her children by her side, lending their hands to various tasks. From assisting with wedding preparations to contributing to branding and marketing efforts, their involvement was invaluable. As time passed, her daughter, Anna, emerged as a talented florist in her own right and they embarked on a shared journey, managing the flower shop together.

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic presented both challenges and opportunities for Flowers with Love. While traditional avenues of business were impacted, the shift towards online sales enabled the business to continue serving the community with flowers and hampers, providing a source of joy during uncertain times.

Today, the focus has shifted towards championing local and Australian small businesses. This has seen the shop evolve and expand its offerings to include a diverse range of products, from flowers to plants to unique giftware where every item tells a story. A meticulously curated collection of giftware that speaks to the soul, ensures there’s something special for everyone who walks through the door.

From artisanal treats to mindful games, the shelves brim with treasures waiting to be discovered. Nestled among the floral arrangements, you can expect to find a bounty of delights sourced from near and far. Take a journey through the flavours of Australia with artisan cookies and nuts from the Blue Mountains and savory spreads from the heart of rural Victoria. For those seeking a taste of local flavour, you can be sure to find crackers from Braidwood, gourmet chocolate from Murrumbateman and honey from Jerrabomberra. These small-batch treats not only delight the palate but also support the vibrant tapestry of Australian producers who infuse their products with love and care.

flowers with love

At Flowers with Love, every bouquet, arrangement and wreath is meticulously crafted with care and attention to detail. Behind the scenes, a huge amount of thought and planning is carefully orchestrated to bring vibrant floral visions to life.

During Winter, Lisa and her team create their wreath bases using branches harvested from grape vine prunings, twisting and manipulating them into shape and hanging them to dry. These bases become the foundation for their creativity. When it comes to creating their dried arrangements and wreaths, Lisa and her team employ a meticulous approach to their craft, with a particular emphasis on the drying process.

Unlike some other methods that rely on chemical treatments and artificial processes, Flowers with Love opts for air-drying, preserving the natural beauty of each petal and stem.

As the world of weddings evolves, so too do the trends in floral design. In recent times, we’ve witnessed a surge in micro and intimate weddings, where love is celebrated amidst close friends and family.

In response to this shift, Flowers With Love have taken their floral creations to a new dimension, reflecting the intimacy and romance of these smaller gatherings. Gone are the days of rigid, structured bouquets.

Instead, they’re embracing a sense of spontaneity, crafting bouquets that exude an air of effortless romance. Soft pastel tones dominate, complementing the intimate nature of these celebrations. But amidst these romantic blooms, one trend remains steadfast: the enduring popularity of native flowers. We’re fortunate to be surrounded by a bounty of native flora, from banksias to proteas. They add a touch of rustic charm to any wedding, infusing it with a sense of wild elegance.

As we look ahead to the future of floristry in weddings, one thing is certain: the beauty lies in the details and each element is carefully chosen. These floral designs serve as a testament to the enduring power of love, expressed in every petal and stem used.

Among the latest additions to the mindful gift repertoire are Dog by Dr. Lisa and Mindful and Co Kids. Dog by Dr. Lisa caters to our beloved four-legged companions, including nourishing treats to grooming products.

Meanwhile, Mindful and Co Kids invites children to embark on a journey of self-discovery and playfulness. From mindfulness tools to engaging games, this collection fosters creativity, curiosity, resilience, and emotional well-being in young minds.

At Flowers with Love, mindful gifting is not just a transaction; it’s a philosophy rooted in spreading joy and supporting the vibrant community of small businesses.

Lisa’s favourite blooms would have to include dahlias, love-in-a-mist amaranthus, daisies, hydrangeas, zinnias, cosmos and statice. Excess flowers and foliage find new life as they’re carefully dried, destined to grace their wreaths. For Lisa and her team, creativity is not just a passion—it’s a way of life and a reminder of the timeless beauty that blooms in every season.

As Flowers with Love continues to thrive, it stands as a testament to Lisa’s dedication to quality, service, hard work, and unwavering passion for floristry. More than just a business, Flowers with Love is a cornerstone of the Jerrabomberra community, where creativity blooms and connections are forged.

ebony may bakes

Ebony’s passion for baking traces back to her childhood, where she fondly remembers assisting her parents in baking birthday cakes. At the young age of ten, Ebony started cooking by herself, baking simple recipes for her family.

Growing up, Ebony recalls spending her school holidays experimenting with different flavours and kept a notebook where she would document how she could improve her recipes.

A pivotal point in her baking journey was when her grandma recognised her love for baking and bought her a two-day cake decorating course at a local cake shop.

From here, Ebony started to make celebration cakes and cupcakes for family events and through word of mouth more people wanted to order, so she registered her business and became official.

Ebony has always been fascinated with business and recalls having little ‘fake’ businesses when she was little such as a magazine business and a bracelet business.

Her cake business has definitely arisen from her passions, and she loves every aspect of it.

Embracing the digital age, Ebony ventured into TikTok in 2022 to share her journey as a cake business owner and inspire fellow enthusiasts.

Current owner Paula’s journey towards taking over B’town Kids in Bungendore was inspired by her deep-rooted passion for children’s clothing, which she discovered after having her own children. She found joy in dressing her son and daughter in unique, high-quality outfits that stood out.

However, she found it challenging to find clothing that combined quality, style, durability, and affordability. Many times, online purchases were disappointing and did not meet her expectations.

Living in Bungendore for 13 years, Paula came across B’town Kids in the Bungendore Village Square, a store that carried brands aligning with her high standards. She frequently shopped there for her children and special gifts for others.

When the opportunity to purchase the business arose, she seized it eagerly. Although she considered operating exclusively online, she decided to maintain the boutique shopping experience, which allowed for a more personable and visible approach.

Paula was determined to continue the tradition of providing a curated, high-quality boutique shopping experience that stood out in the fast fashion world. She also still stocks the brands that were carried by the original store, as well as many more.

Since taking over B-Town Kids, Paula ensures the store’s inventory stays fresh, current, and aligned with the latest trends. At the same time, she also stocks timeless pieces from boutique brands, which are not readily available everywhere.

These heirloom-quality items are designed to be passed down through generations to be worn and loved again and again.

retailers.

B’town Kids places a strong emphasis on sustainability and quality in the clothing industry. Paula strives to balance providing durable, affordable clothing with using ecofriendly materials that minimize environmental impact. She values ethical manufacturing practices and aims to reduce the carbon footprint through sustainable logistics.

To uphold these values, Paula partners with suppliers and brands that share her commitment to sustainability.

Many of the brands carried in the store have been personally tested by her own children over the past five years, ensuring they meet pretty rigorous standards. Customer feedback is also highly valued, providing insights that help improve and refine the product offerings.

The store prides itself on offering unique items that customers won’t find in mass-market

B’town kids

One of Paula’s favorite aspects of owning and operating B’town Kids is witnessing the joy and satisfaction of customers finding items they love. She finds that there is no greater compliment than to have a customer that is passing through the town ask her to open up on her day off because they must have that dress in the window!

Another highlight is when customers return to share photos of their children wearing special outfits purchased from B’town Kids.

Operating a small, family-owned business in a semi-rural town like Bungendore allows Paula to forge strong connections with the local community.

Recognizing the economic challenges many face, she decided early on to provide tangible benefits to encourage local shopping. Instead of traditional sponsorships, Paula offers discounts to locals and nearby residents. This is not a new concept, but it delivers an immediate benefit and fosters support for the local community.

Paula also enjoys featuring local children, including her own, in promotional materials for new seasonal clothing. These photo shoots are a fun event, and the children get to keep the outfits they model, further strengthening the community bond and making the store more relatable and engaging for local families.

When you buy an existing business, it will always take time to put your own stamp on it. Paula has been running the shop for over a year now and has loved connecting with the local community, supporting local and Australian artisans and focusing on personalised customer service.

She values the traditional shopping experience, where customers can browse, feel the quality of fabrics, and enjoy a complete and engaging shopping experience.

Paula hopes this tactile and personable approach to shopping never changes, as it sets B’town Kids apart from the impersonal nature of online and fast fashion retail.

Paula views B’town Kids not just as a shop but as a destination within the Bungendore community. By offering unique, highquality products and creating a welcoming, personalized shopping environment, she aims to provide a memorable experience for every customer.

Her commitment to sustainability, quality, and community support makes B’town Kids a cherished local business that resonates with the values and needs of its customers.

Chef Scott Gooch’s surprise new dining option

Words by Bree Element

You’re likely a huge fan of his wood-fired pizzas and signature Roo Burger but iconic Queanbeyan chef Scott Gooch has launched a surprise new dining offer.

You’ll find him every Sunday at Wright Park, home of the junior Blues, in his new fullykitted out coffee and toastie van catering to hundreds of coffee-drinking parents and hungry kids post-match.

On the menu at Bean and Bread, his new downsized offering, are flat whites, cappuccinos and hot chocolates, but the best part is you pair them with a Texan Toastie (home-smoked brisket, cheese, caramelised onions, pickles and hickory bourbon sauce) or a Grilled Ruben (homemade corn beef, cheese, sauerkraut pickles and mayo).

And if you’re a fan of cold coffee (like me) he also does iced lattes, mochas and long blacks – although the hot drinks will likely be more popular on freezing cold mornings at one of Queanbeyan’s busiest sporting fields.

It’s a huge change of pace for the chef who’s designed menus for five-star resorts and the bistros of multi-million dollar pubs and clubs in the past; but it’s a change Scott says was “very welcome”.

“I’ve worked hard enough,” he laughs. “When we moved over to east Queanbeyan at the beginning of the year, I saw hundreds of people on the oval across the road and thought, ‘that’s one way I can feed a crowd’.

“Everyone wants a coffee first thing –especially in winter in Queanbeyan. And I knew that although they’d built the new

canteen facilities over there, what was missing was a barista.” Scott designed the coffee van himself to include things coffee vans normally don’t have a huge cast iron sandwich press and a fridge. Luckily, he’s used to working in small spaces. Scott first started cooking when his family bought Tommy Tucker’s Cafe in the West Industrial Area in the early 2000s. In 2017, he stepped up into the role of executive chef of The Duxton at O’Connor shops. But COVID put an end to that role, and Scott was forced to work in the public service: which only reinforced how much he loved being in the kitchen.

In 2021 he joined Journey Beyond as executive chef, designing menus for five-star restaurants in the top end of Australia. His most recent post, though, was as executive chef of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos Club, where he completely redesigned the club’s lunch and dinner offerings in line with the launch of the new 2620 Bistro.

He pairs weekend work in the Bean and Bread van at Wright Park with consulting work during the week. His kitchen layout, talent recruitment, team structure and menu design skills are in huge demand for new venues launching in Canberra and nationally. But of course, he wants to see as many of his local fans as possible at Wright Park, whether they’ve got kids running out onto the field or not. “And if you’ve got a big event and need a coffee can, we’re open to bookings,” he says.

In 1990s Queanbeyan, department store Grace Bros was king

The Grace Bros story began long before this story in 1885, more than a hundred years before the Queanbeyan store opened. Grace Bros famously bought out the popular JB Young’s store in 1979 and continued to trade under that name until mid 1986 when they rebranded to Grace Bros.

The store was the centrepiece of the Queanbeyan shopping district, linking Monaro Street with Riverside Plaza, and in an age long before White Fox or Shein, a department store like Grace Bros holds memories of special occasions and teenage life lessons.

A Christmas musical miracle

The year was 1992. I think. (Anything pre2000s is getting a bit blurry at this point). Every December leading into Christmas my parents would ask what we each wanted - just one special gift - our ‘Santa present’. This particular year I had my heart set on a yellow Sony sports walkman that I had seen in the shiny locked glass cabinet in the music department at Grace Bros.

My Dad wanted me to show him exactly what it was (or I wanted to show him, I can’t quite remember). Thursday night - probably after doing the weekly groceries at Jewels Foodbarn - Dad and I headed into Grace Bros. Up the escalator and past the rows of cassettes, I pointed out the yellow Walkman to him and he looked at the price, I think it was in the $100-$150 range, which was a good chunk of his public service wage back then, in fact, it was more than a fortnight’s groceries for our family. “We’ll see,” Dad said, with an expression that actually said, “Maybe next year” and I felt like a selfish teenager for even asking.

Christmas morning arrived and I was woken at 4am by my over-enthusiastic-about-all-thingsin-life brother Kenrick. I spotted something yellow under the tree among all the red and green paper and I wanted to cry. My Dad had caught the bus to work all year and run laps of Lake Burley Griffin in his Dunlop Volleys with a hole in the toe just to make my teenage heart happy. The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Belinda Carlisle had a really good run in that Walkman and helped me to block out my sister Bree on the bottom bunk who always thought that bedtime was a great time to rehash all her high school drama.

The Year 6 school social special

Growing up in the 80s and 90s as a family of six, we weren’t poor poor, but we were definitely a paycheck-to-paycheck kind of crew. I certainly didn’t buy clothes from Grace Bros every other week like my best friends, seasonal lay-bys at Best and Less were more our MO. So when I had the chance to buy an entire outfit from Grace Bros for my Year 6 school social, believe me when I say, I did not skimp. I was gonna get all the clothes and all the accessories a girl could dream of. I mean, my primary school sweetheart was leaving me to start high school at an all boys private college in Canberra. I needed to leave a lasting impression.

Paisley was a big deal, so the red denim shorts were a no brainer. A white bodysuit, that I’m glad I chose because I never again in my life would pull off a painted-on white bodysuit. A headband: because obviously. My hair was growing out because I thought a bowl cut like Jane off Melrose Place was a great idea, until Zoran spun my chair around and it actually wasn’t.

Also not shown in the picture was a turned up bucket hat that was inspired by the very talented 1990s girl band Girlfriend. But did my boyfriend and I have a memorable evening in my Grace Bros outfit, dancing ‘The heel and toe polka’ and ‘The Waves of Bondi’ at my Year 6 farewell? You bet we did.

One Thursday night while strolling the plaza with a friend we came across a green corduroy Rip Curl wallet (the kind with the velcro) that had been dropped on on the ramp leading into Grace Bros, opposite Stock Jeans. I picked it up and opened it to look for a drivers licence and saw that it had 50 bucks inside. “Just keep it, put it in your pocket!” my friend urged me. But my anxious teenage brain said “absolutely not” and I took it to the information desk on the upper level and handed it in.

The rest of that night and for weeks afterward, my friend would mock me in front of our other friends for handing the wallet back in. She’d talk about all the things I could have bought with that money (mind you, she was from the type of family that was never short on cash). I felt lame and embarrassed for being a goody-two-shoes but I hope now that as a parent to teenagers, I have taught my children to do the same thing - 50 bucks is still A LOT of money!

The Rip Curl wallet

Thursday night thugs

Imagine it: Queanbeyan, 1994, Thursday night aka ‘Late night shopping’. You’re wearing your slouch Levis, Doc Martens, flanny tied casually around your waist and an obscene amount of eye liner for a 14 year old (or anyone of any age). Walking laps around Riverside Plaza was required for optimal social status. You had to ‘be seen’. Walking through the Grace Bros entrance opposite Stock Jeans and looping around the department store, before emerging out the other side (where the food court is today) made for the perfect circular route. We’d stop by the lolly shop for Guylian Belgian chocolate shells and lurk in Stock Jeans, trying on Rip Curl watches and imagining what outfit we’d wear to the next party - that was definitely going to get grass stains from ending up at Freebody Oval or in a grass paddock somewhere. Inside Grace Bros itself, we’d hang around Miss Shop and in the music section, perusing the cassingles, A-line skirts and ribbed tanks.

I bought my first ever CD single from that music department: Seal’s Kiss from a Rose. I took it to my friend’s house party in Cunningham Street that weekend and it got stolen. I was devastated that I’d saved my lunch money for a week to buy that CD. It was back to sad Boyz II Men ballads for me. (I still know who took it! Blocking them from the Q! News Facebook page after they trolled the comments was karmic, but didn’t make up for my lost time with Seal.)

If you still call Myer ‘Grace Bros’ you’ve probably related to a lot of these stories and you probably have a few yourself!

Empowering Women in Football

BellaMonaro WFC

Providing us with the inside scoop, President Veronica Elliott of local BellaMonaro Football Club tells us all about their empowering women’s teams and their hopes for the associations future.

BellaMonaro Women’s Football Club was born from the collaboration between our foundation partners, Monaro Panthers and Brindabella Blues Football Clubs. These clubs envisioned creating a pathway to elite football for girls and women in the Brindabella and Monaro Regions. Studies show a significant drop in female sports participation during teenage years and this often continuing into adulthood. Noticing that many young female players struggled to develop alongside boys, our experienced coaches and volunteers initiated female-only football academies. These early initiatives, featuring female-only training sessions, demonstrated remarkable improvements in players’ skills and confidence. The need for a female-friendly training and playing environment became the driving

What are your club values and how does the Queanbeyan community support these?

At BellaMonaro, we are quite dedicated to creating a female-friendly environment for our footballers, from junior girls to young women, including our National Premier League players. Our goal is to involve women in various roles, from committee members to coaches and managers, ensuring a supportive and understanding community. Our committed female volunteers work tirelessly to make our players feel safe and comfortable, donning female-friendly uniforms and training together at state-ofthe-art facilities such as the new Regional Sports Complex at South Jerrabomberra.

We believe in the holistic development of our players, working closely with our foundation club partners, Monaro Panthers and Brindabella Blues FCs, to provide pathways for women and girls to reach the highest levels of play. As a local club, we are passionate about investing in local talent and invite the Queanbeyan and Monaro communities to watch our games, join as players, volunteer, or support us through sponsorships.

What AGE groups and levels do you cater to and are there plans for expansion?

BellaMonaro offers a variety of teams, ranging from junior girls under 12 to under 18, as well as all-age women’s teams competing in the Capital Women’s Leagues. As we plan for next season, our goal is to welcome more girls and women, whether they are looking to develop their skills or compete at the highest levels.

What tips can you give young girls aspiring to pursue soccer as a career?

At BellaMonaro, we encourage our players to collaborate with their coaches in setting both individual and team goals. Clear objectives, coupled with constructive feedback from trusted and qualified coaches, are fundamental to our approach. We have found that fostering a supportive, female-friendly environment at BellaMonaro greatly empowers players to achieve their full potential. For young female athletes aspiring to pursue a football career, it is paramount to receive the right support from their club and opportunities to showcase their skills through ample game time.

WHAT are your future plans and ARE THERE ANY new developments for this season?

This year marks a significant milestone for us as we celebrate our promotion to the National Premier League Girls with our under 14s, 15s, and 17s teams. This achievement builds on our past successes in junior leagues. Our commitment remains steadfast in ensuring every player enjoys their football experience. BellaMonaro continues to prioritize player development, offering a supportive environment where female athletes can thrive and feel safe refining their skills. Looking ahead, we’re already preparing for further growth next year and eagerly anticipate welcoming new players to both our junior girls’ NPLG and women’s competitions. Playing amongst the stars...

Softball World Champions

The Qliving team had the opportunity to get to know local Queanbeyan Athletes; Softball World Champions Matthew Harrow, Jerremyah Selu and Josh Ingle-White. We learnt how these athletes excelled at their sport and the achievements they have made along the way. They shared insight into their own individual experiences; and are a testament to what it takes to start at humble beginnings to reach the world stage.

Our Australian Steelers team fought valiantly against countries from across the globe, displaying incredible discipline and camaraderie. Taking the field, our boys remained undefeated until their first loss against Canada. With determination and grit on their side, the Steelers marched on to the finals and faced Canada once again, where they emerged victorious as the 2022 Softball World Champions.

How did you first get into the sport and what does it mean to you to now be a Softball World Champion?

“I was born into a family of softball players, so it was only natural for me to pick up the sport. I’m certain I had a bat in my hand before I could walk. Playing the sport as soon as I was old enough and then living out a lifelong dream of becoming a world champion is surreal and means more to me than words can describe”. -

“I first got into softball by playing Tee-ball as a summer sport in primary school. I picked up the mechanics of the game pretty quickly and was always one of those kids who could hit with power, which made it an easy sport to enjoy. Eventually, Teeball turned into Modified Softball, and finally into Softball. I enjoyed the sport and was being picked for representative teams, so I kept playing and learned more every year. It means a lot to me personally to show that I’ve reached the pinnacle of the sport I love, with the support of my amazing family, and to do it not only with my teammates but also with some of my best mates. Playing the game you love for so long means you make friendships that last years, maybe even a lifetime. Representing your country is an honor in itself, so coming away as the best in the world for a sport you’ve played most of your life is something that can’t be put into words”. -

“I got into the sport by playing Tee-ball for my local team and then slowly worked my way up into representative teams. Starting at the grassroots level in primary school and eventually becoming a World Champion later in life was pretty amazing. It shows what hard work and dedication can achieve if you put in the effort. I remember being young and looking up to the 2009 team, which was the first team to win the world championship, and achieving this in my career was a real honor. To me, this was the pinnacle of the sport, and it makes me feel very proud. I will always hold that with me for the rest of my life”. - JOSH INGLE-WHITE

AUSTRALIAN MENS SOFTBALL steelers

Any career highlights or stand out memories that hold significance to you?

Every time I get to put on the Australian jersey, it is an absolute honour, and it’s a feeling I could never get used to. I’ve been lucky enough to participate in three World Cups so far, and I’m about to take on my fourth, at the U19, U23, and Open Men’s levels. Each of these teams has been something special, and we have come away with victories in all three World Cups. Captaining the team at the inaugural U23 World Cup in Argentina will always be one of my favourite softball memories, but I’m not sure anything will top winning the Open Men’s World Cup in 2022 with my dad, Lang Harrow, as my coach. That is the pinnacle of men’s softball, and being a part of that team is something I’ll be forever grateful for.

How has your community in both Queanbeyan and Canberra Region helped shape you as a player?

I started playing at the age of three, participating in “blast ball” at David Madew Oval in Jerrabomberra. The first big tournament I won in softball was the state knockout title with my primary school, Jerrabomberra Public, and that will always be a special memory. The ACT Open Men’s team is the most successful sporting team to come out of the ACT, having won 18 national titles. I was fortunate to grow up around some of the best players in the world, right in my own backyard. I had the opportunity to watch and learn from these players, and eventually, I went on to play with many of them. Without their success and achievements, I would never have been able to reach the level I am at today.

What advice you would give to youth athletes who are aspiring to reach your level?

Having fun is one of the most important things when you are breaking down any sport. If you enjoy playing it, then the time you put into it is priceless. You have fun when you succeed.

This is the catalyst to do the extra training to hone your skills, the obsession with becoming better and setting goals to improve your game. If you have fun then the rest will follow and you’ll be able to enjoy the small things, from friendships to the memories.

Who has been a major influence in your athletic journey?

I’ve had many influences within the sport of softball that have helped pave the way for me. Growing up and being surrounded with some of the best Australian softball players in the world definitely helps you gain an understanding of how the game is played at the top level, along with what is required to reach the top. Discipline, Sacrifice and Repetition. My own personal influence would have to be my family. From learning how to harness my passion for sports from my father, to being able to make my mother and sister proud as my #1 fans, having the love and support from my family to chase my own goals as an athlete would have to be my biggest influence.

Matthew Harrow

How do you handle high pressure game scenarios?

For me my largest influence would be preparation within trainings and going through plays before they happen; really knowing what my role inside and out; so I can automatically react to any scenario. It helps to put in the work and training, because if you have that understanding and confidence within yourself then when placed under high pressure, you will find success in your results.

What core values should you embody when wearing the green and gold?

Being a part of multiple Australian teams, I have got to see a whole range of how different people can come together; and with this world championship team our core focus was being ourselves and a sense of knowing that we have been selected for a reason, therefore we have what it takes to get the job done. Alongside believing this, having the responsibility for preparing and performing the role that you as an individual player can bring to the team. Throughout the whole tour, we had a whole heap of success with 1-2 losses, its truly remarkable to think about how connected we all were, which isn’t something that is easy to achieve in sport. But with these core values and friendship, you become unstoppable even when you back are up against the wall.

WHAT’s NEXT?

Harrow and Selu look forward to their next World Series hosted in Mexico, commencing in June 2024. Whilst Ingle-White and wife Hannah welcome their newborn child (Minnie) to their very own world stage in Queanbeyan.

3 Areas to get on your bike

AROUND QUEANBEYAN-PALERANG

Chat with anyone who lives for two-wheeled adventures, and they’ll go on and on about the awesome riding spots around Queanbeyan and Canberra.

One of the best things about riding in the Queanbeyan-Palerang region is the variety of trails that make it fun and accessible to quickly progress and build your skills.

So whether you are trying out riding for size, looking for a new activity for the whole family or seeking a new challenge, there’s a trail not too far from home.

the scar, karabar

A pump track is what you need on the days where you want to get on your bike—but keep it casual.

The first tailor-made public jump and pump track in the area, The Scar is a bit of a hidden gem. It was built with progression in mind so you will definitely find something to practise on and something to aspire to.

An afternoon at The Scar is also a great social activity for adults and kids alike! Keep in mind that this track was purpose-built for dirt bikes, so bring the bike but leave the skateboard at home.

Googong Foreshores

googong foreshores

For riders who prefer fire trails, take the 45-minute drive to Googong Foreshores for some nice, long scenic routes. Below are 2 trails that can be combined to complete the full Googong Dam Circuit for a brilliant halfday out.

Western Foreshores Ride, 19.7km return

In this area, the Western Foreshores route is most popular with walkers and riders alike; the ride is smoother as it follows management trails through grassland and open woodland, with many scenic views of the dam and the Queanbeyan escarpment.

While the ride still features some climbs, they are comparatively easier. The ride can be accessed from either end of Googong; the northern trackhead is near the upper Foreshores car park and the southern end is at Tin Hut car park.

Queanbeyan River Loop Ride, 19.7km return

For a ride of similar length but that takes it up a notch, check out the Queanbeyan River Loop Ride. This ride starts and finishes at the London Bridge car park and follows management trails through dry sclerophyll forests.

However, this loop features steeper gradients (so tougher climbs and looser descents) as well as two crossings of the Queanbeyan River. The crossings will generally require you to get off your bike and get your feet wet.

While you’re here, don’t forget to explore London Bridge Arch, a natural bridge formed from limestone over thousands of years; it is perhaps the most photographed feature of the Foreshores!

Please note, while the area is part of NSW, it is managed by the ACT Parks and Conservation Service. For the most up-to-date information on the Foreshores’ opening hours and more, visit the Parks ACT website.

SPARROW HILL AND EAST KOWEN MTB TRAILS

Just 12 minutes outside of Queanbeyan is a plethora of singletrack trails at the Sparrow Hill and East Kowen MTB trail areas. Both are part of Canberra’s largest active pine plantation, the Kowen Forest.

At Sparrow Hill, the majority of trails are wellgroomed, flowy and open, with moderate climbing; this makes the trail area very accessible to any level of rider.

There are usually 3 main loops that are very clearly marked; Short Loop (16km), Long Loop (40km) and Archery Loop (15km). There is also a family-friendly 5km loop named Kid Stuff.

However, at the time of this article, forestry work has commenced and so riders are being redirected. The trail builders have clearly marked out other loops that are between 5-10km long.

Check maps and updates at the trailhead, follow signage and stay out of work areas. The East Kowen network tends to run a little rougher, with more climbing and so is better suited to more intermediate riders. The only black trail in both trail areas is found here; Romper Room is less than 900m in length but features some larger rock rolls that lean into tight, steep turns for a thrilling ride!

For those looking for a big day out and an endurance ride, you can easily link up trails, choose your own adventure and rack up the kilometres.

For example, the Canberra Off-Road Cyclists run a variety of races every year and have mapped out a 50km loop that consists of some seriously gruelling climbs through both East Kowen and Sparrow Hill.

STUDIO and CLINIC

Sophie with her daughter, Chey.

Established in March 2017 by mother-daughter duo Chey and Sophie, Bodhifit has grown into a thriving holistic health and fitness hub. Not only does this studio offer a variety of fitness classes, but they also provide a natural health clinic, oracle card readings and wellbeing massages. Sophie is a qualified yoga teacher who also holds a bachelor of herbal medicine. She enjoys taking one-on-one appointments with her clients to discuss their health concerns and treat these using natural remedies. She is also an experienced oracle card reader. Chey is a qualified yoga teacher who also specializes in lymphatic drainage massages, which help clients to relieve fluid retention, stress, and achieve overall wellbeing.

Currently, the Fyshwick studio is in the process of expanding to include a dedicated space downstairs for the clinic and massage rooms. Bodhifit is also currently offering a 4 week beginners course which is a great way to start and go over all the basic moves to then incorporate these into future classes.

Some must try classes which Chey recommends for those joining Bodhifit for the first time would be the beginners course or definitely the yoga sculpt or Hatha yoga classes as they are a great way to start.

On top of the wonderful fitness classes and holistic experiences offered, Bodhifit studio also facilitate Full moon gatherings approximately once a month. The full moon gatherings offer a unique opportunity to come together and harness the energy of the full moon.

These events include a guided meditation and provide time for personal reflection on current life experiences. Additionally, oracle cards are pulled during the gathering by each individual, offering guidance and insight for the month ahead.

The Bodhifit studio clinic has recently introduced an exciting new type of lymphatic massage known as wood therapy lymphatic. In comparison to the traditional lymphatic massages offered,

Wood therapy is a more intense session and is more tailored towards shaping the body. This type of massage also helps women with fascia and cellulite, fluid retention, bloating and offers a general sense of overall well-being. These sessions can be comparatively more intense than the manual lymphatic massages due to the nature of the tools but the outcome is amazing.

new treatments!

Some exciting new treatments we can expect to see at Bodhifit include their Neo-lifting facials and Fat cavitation treatments.

The Neo lifting facials are 1.5 hour long face sessions which focus on the lymphatic system, face massage, neck & head massage as well as buccal massage which is an intra-oral massage. This is great for those who have sinus issues or hold tension in their jaw. The aim of the sessions are focused around pro aging techniques, helping with all those fine lines, getting the blood circulating and helping your skin keep its’ natural glow. Everyone so far has been loving these sessions!

Fat cavitation and radio frequency is great for breaking down the fascia and cellulite. It can help tight the skin and bring youthful texture to the skin on the body. The clinic currently offers fat cavitation as an add on to their lymphatic wood therapy or body sculpting sessions. This machine really steps up the body sculpting/ wood therapy sessions by helping to kick-start the process of removing the fat cells from your body via the lymphatic system, allowing you to see results after one session. These sessions are great to start in winter to help kick start the summer body prep!

the effects of glandular fever and how to support your immune system this winter

For those who have ever contracted Glandular Fever, the winter months can be especially draining. Luckily, the Bodhifit Clinic provides homeopathic drops, herbal tinctures and specialised nutritional advice which can help combat the prolonged symptoms of this virus and ease that winter slump.

Glandular fever, also known as infectious mononucleosis or “mono,” is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). 98% of the population has it and once you get EBV you can never get rid of it, you simply have to manage it. While many people recover within weeks to months, some may experience long-term effects. These can include:

1. Chronic Fatigue: Persistent fatigue lasting for months or even years is one of the most common long-term effects.

2. Weak Immune System: The immune system can remain weakened, making individuals more susceptible to other infections.

3. Recurrent Symptoms: Some people may experience periodic flare-ups of symptoms such as sore throat, swollen glands, and fever.

4. Depression and Anxiety: Prolonged illness and fatigue can lead to mental health challenges, including depression and anxiety.

5. Hepatic Issues: In some cases, the liver can be affected, leading to prolonged liver inflammation or issues.

6. Cardiovascular Problems: Rarely, glandular fever can lead to complications such as myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle).

In the clinic, hemopathies are used to manage and shut down the EBV virus. Bill Giles created a nosode specific to the EBV virus. The EBV nosode alerts the immune system to shut down the viral flare-up and helps manage symptoms. Homeopathy is a holistic approach that uses highly diluted substances to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes and immune response mechanism.

Here’s how homeopathic drops might help your immune system during winter: Reducing Fatigue, Lymphatic Support, Symptom Management and Stress Reduction.

While homeopathic drops can be beneficial and help manage EBV, in the clinic we also include a protocol that involves food programs herbs and lifestyles strategies. By combining homeopathic drops with these healthy practices, you can support your immune system and manage the long-term effects of glandular fever more effectively during winter and throughout your life.

Sophie’s top ten Tips for Keeping your Body Healthy During these winter months

In Chinese medicine, winter is associated with the Water element and is seen as a time for rest, reflection, and conserving energy. Here are some tips to keep healthy during winter according to Chinese medicine principles:

1. **Eat Warming Foods**: Focus on warm, cooked foods that are easy to digest. Soups, stews, root vegetables, and whole grains are ideal. Incorporate warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and garlic to support digestion and keep your body warm.

2. **Nourish the Kidneys**: In Chinese medicine, the Kidneys are the organs most affected by winter. Foods such as black beans, kidney beans, dark leafy greens, and seaweed can help nourish and strengthen the Kidneys. Bone broths are also highly recommended.

3. **Stay Hydrated**: Drink warm liquids to stay hydrated and maintain body warmth. Herbal teas such as ginger, cinnamon, and licorice root can be beneficial.

4. **Conserve Energy**: Winter is a time to slow down and conserve energy. Aim for adequate rest and avoid overexertion. Prioritize sleep and relaxation to support your body’s natural rhythm.

5. **Keep Warm**: Dress appropriately for the cold weather to protect your body’s Qi (energy). Wear layers, and make sure to cover your head, neck, and feet to prevent cold from entering your body.

6. **Practice Gentle Exercise**: Engage in gentle exercises such as Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or yoga to keep your energy flowing without overexertion. These practices also help in maintaining flexibility and reducing stress.

7. **Support Immune Function**: Use herbs and foods that support the immune system. Astragalus, reishi mushroom, and ginseng are commonly used in Chinese medicine to boost immunity. Consult a practitioner before adding any new herbs to your regimen.

8. **Balance Emotions**: Winter is a good time for introspection and managing emotions. Practices like meditation, journaling, or acupuncture can help balance emotions and reduce stress.

9. **Warm Baths and Foot Soaks**: Taking warm baths or foot soaks with Epsom salts can help improve circulation and provide relaxation. Adding warming essential oils like ginger or cinnamon can enhance the effects.

10. **Acupressure and Acupuncture**: Regular acupressure or acupuncture sessions can help maintain balance and address any imbalances that may arise during winter. Specific points related to the Kidneys and immune system can be targeted.

By integrating these practices from Chinese medicine into your winter routine, you can help maintain balance and health throughout the season.

elemental luxe

Queanbeyan’s very own crystal haven

Elemental Luxe is a spiritual haven located in Queanbeyan, offering a beautifully curated range of products designed to support spiritual and healing journeys. The store features crystals in various shapes, sizes, and forms, along with handmade jewellery, candles, incense, books, and tarot cards.

The inspiration behind Elemental Luxe comes from founder Melissa, who worked in the scientific field for almost a decade before realizing her passion for that career was fading and she no longer felt aligned with that path.

It was also during this time that the passing of someone close led her to crystals as a form of comfort and healing. This experience sparked her passion and admiration for crystals, leading her on the path to create a space where others could experience similar benefits and embark on their own spiritual and healing journeys.

Prior to opening Elemental Luxe, Melissa had always been mesmerized by crystals from an aesthetic perspective. However, her understanding and appreciation of these gifts from Mother Earth deepened as she experienced their healing benefits firsthand. Melissa is proud of the beautiful space she has created at Elemental Luxe, showcasing the natural beauty and healing properties of crystals.

Melissa has lived in the Queanbeyan area for nearly 20 years, making it a natural choice for her to establish Elemental Luxe when the perfect little space became available. The local community has provided amazing feedback and support, which has been incredibly encouraging.

Melissa envisions expanding the store in the future to a larger space where workshops, readings, healings, and other spiritual modalities can be facilitated. She would still love to remain in the Queanbeyan area and is waiting for the perfect space to arise.

Elemental Luxe sources its crystals from all over the world, working closely with small family businesses. These trusted relationships have been built over years of trial and error, ensuring that Elemental Luxe offers unique and impressive pieces from trusted sources.

Melissa is proud of the connections she has established with her suppliers and values the opportunity to support small family businesses and communities globally.

Elemental Luxe aims to stock a wide variety of crystals to cater to all budgets. The store offers a large range of smaller, more affordable crystals, such as tumble stones and roughs, as well as larger, statement pieces.

Her personal journey with crystal healing is still quite new and evolving. Initially attracted to crystals purely for their aesthetics, she now has a much deeper appreciation for their powerful healing benefits.

Melissa continues to be in awe of just how transformative and beneficial these unique gifts from Mother Earth can be. Tapping into her spiritual side and learning to trust her intuition has been a significant and transformative process for Melissa.

She has found that self-reflection, practicing gratitude, meditation, and journaling have been extremely empowering and have played a crucial role in her journey thus far. Melissa emphasizes that there are many amazing books and resources readily available that provide excellent prompts and guidance to help shift perspectives and elevate awareness.

When asked about her favorite crystals, Melissa finds it hard to narrow it down but lists her top three favorites as:

PINK AMETHYST

This beautiful crystal resonates with the heart and is great for emotional healing, self-acceptance, and calming. Melissa finds it particularly useful during meditation and tends to gravitate towards it when feeling overwhelmed.

CITRINE

Citrine is a gorgeous crystal known for its properties of abundance, prosperity, and happiness. It is great for motivation and creativity, and Melissa tends to be drawn to it when she needs an emotional pick-me-up or when starting a new project.

PYRITE

Pyrite is another beautiful crystal that is all about abundance, wealth, and prosperity. Melissa loves working with pyrite for goal setting, manifesting, and boosting self-confidence.

Melissa advises choosing crystals based on intuition and what one feels drawn to, as this can guide individuals to the crystals that will be most beneficial for them.

Elemental Luxe also offers a wide range of tarot cards, appealing to both beginners and experienced readers. Although Melissa is not yet an expert in tarot, she is slowly developing her tarot reading skills and delving into the art of reading.

As a beginner, she finds tarot decks that include guidebooks or cards with keywords to be extremely helpful. These resources aid in understanding the meanings behind each card and piecing together the story within each tarot spread.

Melissa’s absolute favorite deck at the moment is the Dreamy Moons Tarot by Annie Tarasova. She describes it as truly divine, with its beautiful colors, gold foiling, and overall aesthetic.

The guidebook that accompanies this deck is fantastic for beginners, as it provides clear definitions of each card’s meaning and helps build trust in one’s own intuition and interpretation. Melissa also mentions that there are many great resources and in-depth books available that delve into the meanings of each card, but like all new skills, mastering tarot reading takes practice.

Melissa advises anyone just starting out on their spiritual journey to keep an open mind, utilize the many resources and modalities available, and find what resonates most with them to help move forward.

She acknowledges that it is a lifelong journey but encourages others to embrace the process and explore the various tools and practices that can support their spiritual growth.

The store’s carefully curated products and Melissa’s personal journey and passion for crystal healing make Elemental Luxe a unique and enriching destination for anyone interested in exploring their spiritual side.

The future holds exciting possibilities for Elemental Luxe, as Melissa aims to expand and offer even more to the local community and beyond.

the

Growing up in Sydney, Helen found her passion for horses from the young age of 7 when she attended a school excursion to Little’s Animal Farm and was chosen to sit on a big grey. I grew up in Sydney, and I fell in love with horses on a school excursion to when I was 7. Helen recalls feeling tall and magnificent on this horse and her obsession grew from this moment forward.

Despite initial resistance from her parents, she persisted in her love for horses, eventually purchasing her first pony, Dusty, at the age of 14. Despite parental scepticism about making a career out of her passion, she pursued various jobs to gain experience after finishing school and at the young age of 21 had saved up enough money to put a deposit on a farm. Advised by her parents to start a bit smaller, however,

Helen began her entrepreneurial journey by writing a letter to her local shopping centre, offering to dress up as an Elf and drive a Horse cart around the carpark for Christmas.

Despite having no initial experience in driving a horse cart and no horses, contracts were signed and Helen persisted with her business idea. With the help of The Yellow Pages, Helen found Wares Livery Stables where she learned to ride and before she knew it she had Pebbles the party pony for Birthday Parties, and Carriages by Cupid for Weddings, eventually growing her business to include 90 regular horse riding students throughout the week. From here, her business grew, and she bought her property in Braidwood 21 years ago, establishing The Saddle Camp.

In addition to formal instruction, the camp also provides opportunities for aspiring riders to participate in fun activities through its saddle club program, where riding skills are gently shaped while having fun with other riders.

SMOKEY HORSE

Both half-Nepali and born in Kathmandu, KG and her husband, Karuna, were inspired to create a vibrant Himalayan restaurant and live music venue, Smokey Horse, in Braidwood due to their deep connection with the community. Karuna Bajracharya has lived in Braidwood since he was two years old, and KG moved there 16 years ago when their daughter was born.

They cherish the small-town community and wanted to share their cultural heritage through fresh, Nepali cuisine, a rarity in regional Australia. The couple’s vision was to create a vibrant space that not only served authentic Nepali cuisine but also provided a platform for live music, reflecting their passion for both food and music. Bajracharya, a bass player, DJ, and music producer, and KG, also a DJ, have been deeply involved in organizing live music events in Braidwood for years.

They believe in the importance of bringing original, live music to regional towns, offering local and visiting artists a stage to showcase their talents.

This blend of culinary excellence and musical passion is what makes Smokey Horse a unique and cherished establishment in Braidwood. Fun fact: Smokey Horse was named after two muchloved Braidwood dogs – Karuna’s childhood dog called Horse and their neighbours’ and best friends’ dog called Smokey.

The restaurant is housed in a unique building constructed with rammed earth and recycled timber by local legend Hugh Krijnen in the early 90s. This gives the place a timeless feel, enhanced by renovations such as soundproofing and double-glazed windows. Smokey Horse hosts live music and DJ events every few months, showcasing original music across various genres.

They provide a full PA setup, a live mix engineer, and live video streaming capabilities, a feature initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The music events at Smokey Horse cover a wide range of genres, from 9-piece reggae bands and brass ensembles to alternative shoegaze artists, hip hop gigs, and drum and bass DJ nights. One of the most memorable performances was by The Three Seas, a group that blends folk music from Bengal and Gorkhaland with spiritual jazz, rock, and reggae, embodying the cultural fusion that the Karunas live and promote through their business.

Smokey Horse is known for its dynamic live music events, particularly the popular Sunday sessions. These sessions are often organized before public holidays, allowing patrons to enjoy the music and atmosphere without worrying about work the next day. The Sunday sessions are a blend of planned performances and spontaneous jamming, creating an exciting and unpredictable musical experience. As the day progresses, the energy builds, culminating in a lively dance floor, often led by KG and Karuna as DJs.

Smokey Horse stands out for its commitment to authenticity and quality. The restaurant’s menu is crafted from fresh, whole ingredients, with almost everything made from scratch. This dedication to quality sets Smokey Horse apart from many other dining establishments, even those considered fancy. The momos are the most loved dish, cherished for their delicate flavours and satisfying texture. These dumplings are a staple in Nepali cuisine, and at Smokey Horse, they are made fresh and served with a range of dipping sauces that enhance their taste.

Following closely in popularity is the Kathmandu Fried Chicken, a unique take on the classic fried chicken that infuses it with Nepali spices, offering a flavourful twist that keeps patrons coming back for more. The slow-cooked goat curry is another favourite, known for its rich, hearty flavours. This dish showcases the traditional methods of Nepali cooking, where patience and the right blend of spices create a meal that is both comforting and deeply satisfying.

For vegetarians, the kwati is a must-try. This fourbean soup, served with crispy parathas, is perfect for the winter months, offering warmth and nourishment with every bite. The restaurant also caters to diverse dietary needs with numerous vegan and gluten-free options. The fried momos and spiced chips are a hit with kids, who also enjoy the free retro arcade games available on the mezzanine level.

The tight-knit Braidwood community is integral to the unique vibe at Smokey Horse. The couple has received substantial support from locals, especially in the early stages of their business, making it a true community effort. Smokey Horse has become a safe space for diverse individuals, including those who feel marginalized. Despite regional towns not being known for their diversity, Smokey Horse’s welcoming environment has attracted people from various backgrounds. The inclusive atmosphere has been particularly appreciated by parents of gender-diverse and neuro-diverse young people, affirming the couple’s commitment to creating a warm and accepting space for everyone.

SMOKEY HORSE

Looking ahead, the couple have ambitious plans for Smokey Horse. They hope to continue expanding their menu, introducing more Nepali dishes and experimenting with new flavours. They are also committed to further enhancing the venue, with plans for additional renovations and improvements to ensure it remains a comfortable and attractive space for their patrons.

On the music front, they aim to host even more diverse and high-profile acts, bringing a wider range of genres and artists to Braidwood. They are particularly excited about the potential for more cross-cultural collaborations, similar to the memorable performance by The Three Seas. These collaborations not only provide unique musical experiences but also highlight the rich cultural tapestry that defines Smokey Horse.

The couple also envisions Smokey Horse as a training ground for young, aspiring musicians and chefs. They hope to offer workshops and mentorship programs, helping to nurture the next generation of talent in both the culinary and music worlds. By sharing their knowledge and experience, they aim to give back to the community that has supported them so generously.

In addition to the regular music events, Karuna is currently producing an album for a young, up-and-coming rapper from Braidwood. This local talent is gaining recognition, and the album launch promises to be a significant event in the town’s cultural calendar. These events highlight Smokey Horse’s commitment to nurturing local talent and providing a platform for artists to showcase their work. Smokey Horse is a testament to the power of community, culture, and passion. KG and Karuna have created a space that celebrates their Nepali heritage while embracing the unique character of Braidwood.

Through their dedication to authenticity, quality, and inclusivity, they have established Smokey Horse as a beloved institution in the town. For more insights into their journey and impact, watch the latest episode of ABC Back Roads on Braidwood, which features Smokey Horse and its role in the community. This episode provides a deeper look into the unique vibe and cultural significance of Smokey Horse, highlighting why it has become such a cherished part of Braidwood.

little sutton bakehouse

The creation of Little Sutton Bakehouse was inspired by the longstanding relationship between Daniel Sparrow and Omar Muscat, whose bond evolved from a professional association into a deep friendship over the years. With decades of combined experience in the hospitality industry, the duo has formed a partnership that is proving successful.

Daniel began his career in hospitality at 15, working at Cream Café & Bar in Canberra, owned by Omar. He advanced to head barista and later assistant manager at another of Omar’s establishments.

The duo’s shared vision led them to build and run Doubleshot Deakin successfully. Daniel eventually moved to Redbrick Coffee, enhancing his barista skills and helping open their fifth venue, ARC. Despite this, Daniel and Omar maintained their friendship, leading to their partnership at Little Sutton Bakehouse, purchased in April 2022.

Omar had recently moved to Sutton and saw the bakery as an opportunity to become part of the community. His background as a pastry chef, trained at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra, added a personal dimension to this new project. Omar’s experience included catering for Qantas and serving President Clinton at Parliament House.

The pair aimed to introduce café-style dining and artisan offerings at Little Sutton Bakehouse, planning to include popular pastries like cruffins.

However, as newcomers to the tight-knit Sutton community, they approached changes cautiously. They began by making minor modifications to the staple range of sourdough, pastries, cakes, and pies, and introduced fresh options such as gourmet baguettes and sandwiches.

Their vision includes creating a welcoming and inviting space, with plans for future offerings like pizza nights with live music and an outdoor coffee cart. They are committed to sourcing seasonal and local produce, building relationships with nearby farmers, including a truffle farm, to use local ingredients as much as possible.

The primary focus for Daniel and Omar is to build a thriving community environment and ensure the happiness of their customers and staff. Daniel, now a mentor to the younger staff members, aims to pass on the guidance and support he received from Omar. He emphasizes the importance of being a positive influence and helping the younger generation learn from his experiences.

With a team of 25 staff members, Daniel and Omar are dedicated to establishing trust within the local community and demonstrating their passion for hospitality. Their goal is to create a space that not only serves delicious food but also fosters a sense of community and belonging. Through their combined expertise and commitment, they aspire to make Little Sutton Bakehouse a central and cherished part of Sutton.

the little sutton bakehouse

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or seasoned baked goods connoisseur, some must-try menu items you simply cannot look past include their flaky vanilla slice, strawberry tart, carrot cake and salted hazelnut Lindt chocolate cookie. For some healthier options, it is highly recommended to opt for a chia soaked Bircher or a classic green smoothie.

Another stand-out feature of the bakehouse is their unique and elaborate pie menu. Omar would highly recommend the peppersteak pie which uses local produce and is cooked overnight giving each flavour the perfect time to marinate. There is also a special winter addition to the pie menu currently in the works which would feature a chicken thai green curry pie, perfect for those frosty winter lunchtimes.

The bakery has cultivated a diverse community, attracting people from various backgrounds including teachers, parents, kids, farmers, and professionals. It has also established a strong relationship with the local sporting community, becoming a major sponsor for a local football club with kids aged 7-12 wearing their jerseys.

Located in the quiet area of Sutton, not far from Canberra, the bakery offers a pleasant escape from daily routines. One of its standout offerings is the highly praised lemon meringue tarts.

Looking ahead, Omar and Daniel aim to evolve the Bakery from a Bakers Delight-style establishment into a unique bakehouse brand. Plans include introducing grab-and-go food options and eventually establishing a bakehouse café with a full menu. The bakery intends to grow alongside the population, maintaining high-quality standards and friendly service.

TESS’S HOME

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE BRAND:

A secluded sanctuary hidden amidst the rolling hills of the Queanbeyan Region.

Tess Godkin’s Home, NSW

Welcome to a coastal-inspired home nestled among the rolling hills surrounding the Queanbeyan region, where the views are as stunning as the design. This gorgeous house and garden combo was built almost seven years ago for owners Tess and Sean Godkin and has really settled into its surroundings now. The couple had been looking for some land when they stumbled across this beautiful elevated acreage where they could design and build a new home that fit their own modern yet timeless aesthetic. With a love for travel to especially tropical and mediterranean locations and with plans in the future to have children their aim was to build a family home and garden that felt like they were on holidays all year round. The result is a home that seamlessly blends coastal comfort and understated luxury.

From the moment you step through the front door, you are greeted with a sense of tranquillity and warmth as you look through a large picture window with a view out to the pool with the stunning countryside behind. The neutral colour palette inside the home is soothing and inviting with warm white walls and materials like oak wood floors and linen furnishings used throughout the space, adding to the relaxed coastal vibe.

Tess, a photographer with a passion for interiors, has put many hours into curating the perfect collection of modern and antique furnishings, many of which she has enjoyed hunting for on Marketplace and second-hand stores and given a bit of a makeover to suit her natural style. The furniture is plush and inviting, with oversized sofas and chairs that beckon you to stay in and relax. Every room is thoughtfully styled, with carefully selected artwork, accessories, and lighting that add to the overall ambiance.

Almost seven years on from moving in and Tess and Sean now have three young children to enjoy their family home with and have hence been very conscious about choosing furnishings that are not too precious but still stylish and comfortable. The family often gets asked how they manage to have white sofas in their living space, but the secret is, all the fabrics are removable linen slipcovers that can be easily thrown in the wash and bleached if necessary. This practical approach to decorating ensures that the home remains stylish and inviting while also being family-friendly.

The family loves to spend as much time as possible outside, and the home, with its enormous sliding doors throughout the main open plan living space, blurs the distinction between the indoors and outdoors when they are flung wide open throughout the warmer months. When they moved into their home, the garden was non-existent, with just dry, dusty rock surrounding the immediate house and beautiful natural Australian bushland on the rest of the 4.5 acre block.

Tess and Sean have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours lovingly designing, planting, and maintaining an extensive garden that has now become quite well-established and provides a beautiful backdrop to their home. The garden includes a tree lined driveway, beautiful herringbone stone pathways, veggie gardens, outdoor entertaining spaces, an olive grove, cottage and coastal inspired garden beds and a cute cubby house and play ground area.

Despite the home being very much coastal holiday inspired and there not being a beach in the region, a pool was an essential feature for the home and garden. It blends seamlessly with the plants around it and the mountain views beyond and becomes a mesmerising water feature in the winter when it's not being used.

The Godkin family has found their coastal-inspired home to be a true sanctuary, where they can relax and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings. They look forward to many more design and garden adventures in the future, as they continue to make their house a home. With its comfortable and timeless style, their retreat is sure to be a cherished place for years to come. Tess, has an Instagram account called @you.me.and.the.sea_ which documents their ever-expanding house and garden journey with thrift find makeovers, interior styling ideas and new garden plans always in the works.

The Godkin family home is a testament to the landscaping and home design dreams that can be realised within the large blocks of land available at Talpa. The large sized blocks will allow you to truly let your imagination take charge and build your life’s masterpiece at Talpa Estate.

AMENITY HIGHLIGHT: THE BANGKOK BEAN, GOOGONG

Janpen, affectionately known as Pen, is a 35-year-old culinary enthusiast from Udon Thani in North East Thailand. Her journey from a small rice farm to running a popular cafe and restaurant in Australia is a story of passion, hard work, and community spirit.

Born and raised on a rice farm by her aunt and grandmother, Pen’s love for cooking began at a tender age of five. She spent her childhood learning traditional Thai recipes and cooking techniques, an experience that laid a solid foundation for her future culinary endeavors.

In 2012, Pen moved to Australia with her husband and their two daughters, who are now 13 and 18 years old. Settling in Googong, New South Wales, Pen started working at the local supermarket in 2018. Her talent quickly shone through, and within six months, she was promoted to deli manager.

Here, she showcased her culinary skills by preparing hot meals and salads using fresh produce that needed to be sold before it went to waste. Her creations became a hit with the local community, especially the tradies working in the area.

In October 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Pen and her husband Nick took a bold step by purchasing a food trailer, which they named ‘The Bangkok Bean.’

This shiny chrome trailer became a beacon of comfort and convenience during the lockdowns, offering coffee, breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the residents of Googong. The demand for their delicious food grew rapidly, making the trailer an essential part of the community.

However, the overwhelming popularity soon made it clear that they needed a larger, more permanent space. In April 2022, they transitioned from the food trailer to a fullfledged cafe and restaurant located in the Googong Leisure Centre.

The Bangkok Bean now offers indoor and outdoor dining, a full liquor license, and options for takeaway and online ordering. The restaurant retains its strong community ties, with many loyal customers from the food trailer days and Pen’s time as a deli manager at the local IGA.

Pen and her team, including a skilled Thai Sous Chef, pride themselves on making most of the food by hand. Dishes like spring rolls, curry puffs, and samosas are crafted with care, ensuring that the freshness and authenticity of the food are never compromised. Their tagline, “Real... Fresh...Food,” perfectly encapsulates their dedication to quality. Some other menu highlights that are sure to keep you warm this winter include the classic Pad Thai, a range of delicious curries and some mouth-watering Laksa soup options.

Pen’s ultimate goal is to make The Bangkok Bean the number one Thai food and Western eatery in the Canberra region. With dreams of expanding interstate, she remains focused on maintaining the high standards that have brought her success.

Pen’s story is a testament to the power of passion and community support. From her early days on a rice farm in Thailand to running a thriving restaurant in Australia, she has always been driven by a love for cooking and a commitment to bringing fresh, delicious food to her customers. The Bangkok Bean stands as a shining example of what can be achieved with hard work, dedication, and a genuine love for what you do.

Our mission is to showcase the best that our Region has to offer and to encourage growth and expansion in our community.

The inspiration behind the creation of Q Living came from a moment of enjoying a delicious Panang Curry from Lime Leaves Thai Restaurant in Queanbeyan. It was in this moment that we realised that there are many hidden gems in the Region that deserved to be showcased and shared with the wider community.

Members of the Marketing team at The Village Building Company are proud residents of the Queanbeyan Region, and are personally invested in seeing the community thrive. The Company is driving an exciting new project on Rutledge Street in the heart of the Queanbeyan CBD, which will be the largest development the Town Centre has seen to date. This Project, together with the large South Jerrabomberra Estate Development reflects The Village Building Companys’ confidence in and commitment to the Region.

Our team firmly believe that Queanbeyan has so much to offer with its diverse range of amenities including restaurants, pubs, major supermarkets, health services, public transport, leisure, and much more. Our Town is steeped in history and boasts a strong sense of community, which we are proud to be a part of.

Q Living aims to bring readers the best that the Region has to offer in each edition. From hidden gems to established businesses, exciting developments, events, and more. The Magazine hopes to inspire readers to explore and appreciate all that Queanbeyan has to offer, and to encourage others to move to this vibrant and unique Region.
