COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IMPACT REPORT 2020

COVID-19 has made us rethink what is important in our lives. We’ve learned that the most crucial thing for all of us is connection: to each other, to our community, and to our faith.

Although we had to close doors and stay in place, we found new ways to connect and to support our community. We relied on our collective will and the power of technology to spark ideas, share in conversation, and create transformative experiences. Qatar Foundation’s Community Development division adapted and evolved so that our programs and services remained accessible to all in the safety of our own homes. Working with local leaders, community champions, staff, and volunteers, we managed to support our community during this time of disruption and uncertainty. This report looks back at 2020 and how we developed together as a nation, celebrating our evolution and realizing our strength.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IMPACT REPORT 2020

When we learn, the brain creates new pathways. When faced with adversity, we find a pathway to hope.

Everyone will agree that this year was like no other. It was trying for all of us. But even in the most difficult of times, we found our way through. The resilience we are all showing during this once-in-a-century pandemic is really inspiring. Last year, our impact report showcased our transformative journey. This year, our journey is one of resilience and introspection. It’s a story about how we came together, how we adjusted to respond to our community and nation’s needs ensuring continuity and access in a time of crisis. By undertaking a digital transformation and finding new ways to meet evolving needs, we were proud to offer 1,001 programs and services attracting an impressive 4.8 million visits to digital and physical offerings. Our journey has been a demonstration of creativity, humanity, and strength. Thank you for your perseverance.

01 Education City: Accessible For All

Every healthy and strong community needs a meeting place where people can come together to experience culture, to learn, and to recreate. Education City is that place and is unlike any other.

10

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IMPACT REPORT 2020

Education City (EC) is a modern, multi-faceted community hub. Community Development makes sure that programs and services offer a wide and accessible range of arts, culture, health and fitness activities, as well as learning opportunities. EC also serves as a testing ground for sustainable living. Research has proven time and time again that active lifestyles are foundational to leading healthy and happy lives. This means less screen time for children, a healthy developmental outlet for youth, and opportunities for families and adults to stay connected. Given the important role that EC plays in our lives, we made sure that it remained accessible, albeit in different ways, throughout the pandemic. We’re creating cultural shifts that are resulting in improved physical wellbeing and community health.

MISSION DIGITAL Community Development is a catalyst for change and the social fabric connecting our ecosystem.

Even when we couldn’t physically be together, our digital transformation strategy ensured that we stayed connected and engaged. Education City’s website and app was developed as a one-stop hub where everyone could discover and register for everything on offer from yoga, to reading groups, to online classes, and learning seminars.

PLANET PROOFING Part of keeping our community healthy depends on keeping our environment healthy. We’re re-imagining our community to be one that is sustainable and resilient.

Community Development continued to advance sustainability at home and in the business sector. Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) moved their annual Qatar Sustainability Week online and continued to offer their technical know-how to promote Green Key certified hotels. In fact, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy sought QGBC’s expertise to ensure 2022 World Cup stadiums, hospitality and event operations follow WELL certification, the international standard for health, safety, and sustainability in buildings.

How does art function in “non-art” domains like public space? This was the focus of Outside the Box: Public Art in Qatar, a two-day public forum presented by the British Council in partnership with Qatar Museums and Qatar Foundation, curated by the UK arts organization under the patronage of Her Excellency, Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums. Education City also hosts the largest collection of Arab modern and contemporary art in the region through Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. A rich collection of over 9,000 artworks from the Arab world and neighbouring regions explores culture and history and profiles local emerging artists.

02 Ethics And Social Responsibility

Ethics and faith are the pillars of a strong moral foundation. For youth, it results in greater self-confidence, and those involved in volunteerism and community life have greater growth – emotionally and intellectually.

20

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IMPACT REPORT 2020

Our ethics anchor our society and provide cohesion in the complicated world we live in. Morals represent a social agreement between people with the aim of promoting social good. This social agreement is manifested in how we care for each other, in our compassion, and in how we show social responsibility when it comes to our community and our environment.

TRANSCEND Our faith keeps us grounded. Our prayers lift us up. Community and our shared values connect us.

In March, Education City’s local Mosque, Minaretein, had to close its doors. Even though we could no longer stand shoulder to shoulder, we joined together in discussion and prayer online every Friday exploring stories of the Prophets from the Qur’an. An array of programs, like Journey with the Prophet, provided a safe digital space where people could discuss, reflect, and question the teachings of the Holy Qur’an without judgement. Faith is an extension of who we are and provides a moral compass guiding us in our daily actions and interactions. Akhlaquna Day, livestreamed this year, celebrated “Yes, I can.” This student-led project asked the public to shift stereotypes and stigma toward people with disabilities by showcasing their contributions to society.

This kind of active community leadership is what we love to see and celebrate. Youth are embodying the values of Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) and doing good for our society. We will continue to support meaningful projects that show the world how our values can be extended community-wide and create more empowered, confident, and socially conscious youth.

HEART WORK Acts of service and volunteerism are good for the heart and soul and a moral obligation. It’s one way we put our faith to action.

An impressive cohort of nationals and expatriates volunteered as part of our national COVID-19 response led by Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health. The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy in partnership with Community Development, Qatar Foundation’s nurses, Weill Cornell Medical College students, and Hamad Medical Corporation undertook a massive volunteer training program to ensure the safety of our local heroes. Volunteers were taught about the basics of COVID-19 including disease incubation and transmission, and learned about the basics of hand hygiene, how to properly wear PPE, and environmental cleaning.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Community means looking after each other, no matter who you are or where you are from.

The suspension of international flights meant that many students living on campus were unable to go home. The housing team quickly mobilized making a home away from home. By the end of March, all 445 international students were able to access a free food pantry; free hygiene supplies and PPE; and free rent on the campus over the summer. As part of our efforts to engage QF alumni, the Alumni Talks series resumed online providing an opportunity for QF alumni to learn about issues relevant to their lives and career trajectories while sharing their knowledge and expertise with one another.

03 Lifelong Learning: Active Minds and Collective Growth

Learning creates pathways to our individual and collective success empowering and strengthening our community now and for generations to come.

34

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IMPACT REPORT 2020

We are all lifelong learners. Learning and discovery can happen at any age and is critical to personal and professional development. At Community Development, we ensure that learning and the developmental journey have a strong beginning and never end. This means getting our children off to the best possible start in life through early childhood literacy and care; keeping our young people engaged and curious; and encouraging our citizens to embrace lifelong learning and to keep discovering and growing.

Digital resources ensure learning and reading never stop for community members.

OPEN ACCESS Even though Qatar National Library couldn’t open their doors, people could keep learning and discovering online.

Qatar National Library (QNL) saw an explosion in the use of their digital library. A library reference chat service, LibChat, was there to help. QNL’s Open Access Program, at the forefront of a global movement to offer open access to research publications instead of using a subscription model, processed twice as many requests in 2020 over 2019 and made twice as many research articles available. For parents and caregivers thrust into the role of home schooling, QNL developed a virtual training program, Parenting a Superstar Student, and developed special materials for parents of children with autism.

Arabian horses bred at Al Shaqab exemplify elegance, character, courage, and stamina.

HORSE POWER The Arabian horse has played a central role in Qatar for centuries. We celebrate everything from horse breeding, to riding, to spectacular international competitions.

In 2020, Al Shaqab welcomed 85 new foals into the world. These horses will be trained and groomed for local and international shows maintaining our heritage of Arabian show horses. Our Equine Education Program also ensured that our legacy lives on. Modifications were made to ensure that our young riders kept learning while being kept safe from COVID-19. HORSE HEALTH We provided services in spite of the pandemic, a testament to the commitment and dedication of the clinic’s staff and to their genuine love of horses.

Even when other equine hospitals in the region closed their doors to emergencies, our very own Equine Veterinary Medical Center (EVMC) continued to provide critical emergency medical services to horses throughout the pandemic. The clinic is an international center of excellence in diagnostics, rehabilitation and training, and in research. In collaboration with the American School of Doha and Qatar University, EVMC creates engagement opportunities and placements for youth so that they consider pursuing careers in biomedical science.

Conducted in collaboration with Qatar’s Weill Cornell University and the Anti-Doping Lab, the goal of this endurance race study is to develop portable kits trainers can use on their horses before any race to avoid unnecessary strain, exhaustion, and even death.
