Qatar to host record 3rd AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023

Q

atar prepares to host the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 for an unprecedented third time, following successful hosting stints in 1988 and 2011. Twenty-four top teams from the continent will vie for the prestigious football title in a total of 51 matches across nine stadiums from January 12 to February 10, 2024. The Qatar Football Association (QFA) was granted the hosting responsibility for the AFC Asian Cup™ 2023 last October, marking Qatar as the inaugural country to host the continental showcase for a third time. Following their previous hosting of the tournament in 1988 and 2011, the defending champions surpass the Islamic Republic of Iran, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates, each having hosted twice. Notably, with Qatar hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022, this will be the maiden AFC Asian Cup™ featuring matches played at World Cup venues. Additionally, 13 teams participating in the AFC Asian Cup™ 2023 were also present during the 2011 edition. The AFC Asian Cup 2023 introduced the return of Saboog, Tmbki, Freha, Zkriti, and Traeneh – a desert rodent family initially unveiled during the 2011 tournament in Qatar. Katara Studios, based in Qatar, brought these characters to life using animeinspired animation and original musical composition that honours football's legacy in the region. Supporters from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and India have secured most available tickets. All AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 match tickets are digital and can be downloaded and displayed on any mobile device. Prices for group stage match tickets start at QR25. Hayya cards will not be mandatory for stadium entry. Prior to the official draw ceremony,

Asian Football Confederation President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa stated, “The last time the AFC Asian Cup was played in Qatar was 12 years ago, and there has been great progress since then. We have also initiated key enhancements. There are 24 teams in the AFC Asian Cup now, a new trophy, and US$15 million in prize money. The impact is clear to see. On behalf of the Asian football family, I would like to express our gratitude to the QFA and the Local Organising Committee, and we also thank the 24 participating nations. The stage is now set for a truly memorable chapter in the history of the tournament. We wish all the teams the very best.” The teams, based on the latest FIFA Ranking, will be divided into four Pots, each containing six teams. Subsequently, the drawing will form six groups (Groups A to F), each comprising four teams. The tournament hosts and defending champions, Qatar, hold the top seed in Group A, commencing their title defence against two-time runners-up China, Tajikistan, and Lebanon.

GORD: Creating local sustainability goals with impact on global agenda of climate change

Dr. Yousef Alhorr, founding chairman, GORD

14 | QH | January 2024

Dr Yousef Alhorr, founding chairman, GORD talks Sara Naveed through its main initiatives, highlighting GORD’s COP28-related projects and how by transforming sustainable environments, it might reshape industry, locally.

Listening Post

Launch of CACE at COP28

QH: What inspired the groundbreaking Synergia7n1 technology, and how do you foresee its impact on future sustainable environments? Alhorr: Synergia7n1 was inspired by the pressing need for energy efficiency and sustainable cooling solutions in the context of Qatar's ambitious goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25 percent by 2030. Recognising that traditional air conditioning units contribute significantly to energy consumption and carbon emissions, GORD took the initiative to develop an innovative air handling system that addresses this challenge. Synergia7n1 stands out for its ability to cool and circulate fresh air in both open and enclosed spaces with a substantially smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional air conditioning units. Through collaboration with key stakeholders such as Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), GORD is exploring the usability of Synergia in climatising barns. The aim is to optimise temperature and humidity levels for

livestock welfare, all while achieving a reduced energy footprint and providing fresh air. This will not only enhance the quality of livestock welfare but also contribute to the sustainable production of dairy products. In terms of its wider impact, Synergia7n1 is not just a local solution; its recognition by the Association of Energy Engineers as an innovative energy technology suggests that it holds promise on a global scale. By saving up to 50 percent of energy compared to conventional compressor-based fresh air-handling units, Synergia sets a benchmark for efficient cooling technologies that can play a crucial role in achieving broader sustainability goals worldwide.

QH: Could you highlight a GORD initiative aligning with Qatar's Vision 2030 and its contribution to global Sustainable Development Goals? Alhorr: All initiatives conceived and pursued at GORD are deeply in line with the environmental pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030. One of our latest initiatives

is the Climate Action Center of Excellence (CACE). Launched at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, CACE is aimed at accelerating the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This initiative holds great relevance not only for Qatar but for nations worldwide, as it aims to provide high-impact solutions to support governments and the private sector in curbing emissions and advancing the global Sustainable Development Goals. It will provide countries with technical assistance to enter carbon markets, in addition to facilitating the reduction and removal of emissions, mobilising climate finance, providing value for money for investors, and generating new projects. The core operations of CACE include creating Article 6 Readiness by training government teams and private sector representatives, ITMO market development by connecting its global network of project developers supplying high-quality ITMOs with a wide range of potential ITMO buyers, and accelerated decarbonisation by facilitating international cooperation to help countries with innovative policy mechanisms and Article 6.2 methodologies.

Listening Post QH: Can you share an impactful partnership driving GORD's mission, and how do you believe collaborations like these shape sustainable development's future? Alhorr: At GORD, we actively engage with international partners, research institutions and organisations to exchange knowledge, expertise and best practices. One of our most impactful collaborations is with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat. Originally signed in 2018, we recently renewed the agreement at COP28 to continue our ongoing research and development to enable successful implementation of the Green Events Tool (GET). The primary focus remains on pushing the environmental sustainability of events, conferences and meetings worldwide, particularly by addressing their climate impact through mitigation measures as well as offsetting of unavoidable GHG emissions through verified climate contributions and funding for impactful climate action initiatives. Our participation at COP28 also resulted in very fruitful collaborations with other international organisations. One of these partnerships is with EPD International AB to heighten awareness about the environmental impacts of products throughout their lifecycle and cultivate a culture of environmental product declarations that advocate for ecologically responsible products. Furthermore, we signed an agreement with the AEE, whereby GORD will expand its course offerings to include new AEE courses on sustainability while the two entities will also work on the development of innovative courses, specifically focusing on carbon management and GHG emissions accountability and measurement.

QH: What do you believe are the key elements needed to make sustainability initiatives financially viable on a larger scale? Alhorr: The key elements crucial to making sustainability initiatives financially viable on a larger scale involve leveraging technological advancements, recognising long-term benefits, implementing supportive policies, and adopting innovative financial models.

16 | QH | January 2024

Recent technological advancements have paved the way for green solutions that inherently make business sense. Even those with upfront financial challenges often prove financially viable in the long run. Addressing financial barriers attached with sustainable solutions requires the implementation of policies that incentivise green initiatives. Notably, several banks in Qatar have introduced green finance schemes, encouraging businesses to invest in environmentally sustainable projects. Some examples of such programmes include GORD’s collaboration with Qatar National Bank (QNB) whereby QNB agreed to provide green mortgage promotions to real estate projects seeking green building certifications under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS). Recently, the Commercial Bank also launched CB Green Mortgage Loan programme that offers competitive interest rates and fee waivers for purchasing sustainable properties certified under GSAS. Earlier this year, GORD signed an MoU with Qatar Islamic Bank to implement sustainable finance initiatives, with a particular focus on driving progress in green buildings certified by GSAS. Similarly, GORD has partnered with Dukhan Bank to bolster sustainable finance practices and foster environmental and societal development. A key aspect of this collaboration is the development of comprehensive frameworks tailored to sustainable finance. In 2022 during COP27,

we entered an MoU with Doha Bank aimed at facilitating the bank in boosting its green initiatives, developing framework for a robust sustainability strategy, and ensuring ESG compliance.

QH: What new technology excites you most for transforming sustainable environments, and how might it reshape the industry? Alhorr: Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) solutions have immense potential to play a transformative role in enabling sustainable environments and reshaping industries. CCUS goes beyond mere emissions reduction by actively removing CO2 from the atmosphere, contributing to negative emissions technology. This technology is crucial for achieving carbon neutrality and mitigating the impact of past emissions. Within Qatar, a key research project developed by GORD Institute targeting carbon capture and utilisation is the magnesium-based cement boards. This project seeks to produce solid phases of CO2, in the form of magnesium and calcium-carbonates from Qatari desalination reject brines. Direct outcomes of this project include the utilisation of locally available reject brine, thereby reducing its impacts on marine biodiversity, mitigation of CO2 emissions in the air, and avoidance of land deterioration by eliminating the need for land quarries.

Retail spending recovers; 2024 pegged as broadly positive Research predicts that the Qatar retail industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of greater than 5 percent between 2023 and 2028 with total nominal retail sales in Qatar in 2022 having touched QR53.6 billion and projected at QR57 billion in 2023, the highest recorded rate since 2018. With such a forecast, especially post the COVID-19 pandemic, how has the pandemic changed the nature of shopping in Qatar?

I

t is common knowledge that the COVID-19 pandemic severely affected the retail sector in Qatar, and overall consumer spending decreased. But if physical shopping decreased, it was more than made up by the e-commerce sector which saw an incremental rise during the lockdowns and restrictions on movement imposed, amply aided by government’s facilitation of the expansion of digital options when non-essential stores were shut down at the start of the pandemic. For instance, the Qatar Central Bank introduced the Qatar Mobile Payment System, which enables users to pay with their smartphones by scanning QR codes. This was made possible by the population's propensity to use digital tools.

18 | QH | January 2024

In Focus

Of significant interest has been the opening of a few new malls and the increase of the gross leasable area of some existing malls in Qatar which have adequately met the pent-up demand for goods and socialising. None of the above could have happened without Qatar’s sizable consumer market. To boot, with a population of just over 2.7 million, Qatar is also one of the wealthiest nations in the world, ranking fifth with a GDP per capita of over US$132,886 in 2023, it is well documented that Qatari consumers are always keen to try new items and have the eye for quality of the goods and services being supplied.

Retail market’s expanse One major factor that contributes to the sector’s expanse is the significant increase in retail floor space with more than 1.7 million sq m of leasable floor space (excluding supermarket buildings with ancillary units) being added since 2015. In addition, there is more than 400,000 sq m of leasable space in ‘outdoor’ retail/F&B destinations, including The Pearl, Souq Waqif, Souq Al Wakra, Msheireb Downtown, Katara, Doha Port, and Lusail Boulevard and West Walk, a mixed-use development of restaurants and retail outlets in Al Waab, has attracted strong footfalls too. With the retail industry’s fiercely competitive nature, a small number of significant businesses controlling most of the market share and with companies expanding their storefronts and considering the commercial possibilities in new regions, the organised retail market has been developing rapidly. Unorganised retail establishments are rapidly being replaced by large hypermarkets, supermarkets, and other retail chains and this trend is anticipated in the medium to long term. Increased retail spending in 2023 has been causated to spike in tourist numbers, economic growth, and a growing number of high-profile international retail outlets in the country.

Talking To

“Be positive, take responsibility, accept life is unpredictable” In conversation with QH, author Ruby Kapoor speaks not only about her book, Let’s Talk About Life but also her perspective about life in general and her top advice to readers of her book, and readers in general.

QH: Can you share a powerful lesson from your book that encourages joyful living? Kapoor: I am primarily a soft, sensitive person who takes everything to heart. Life's experiences can be cruel, painful, and hard to navigate, but with the correct attitude, one can continue with a joyful spirit, happy disposition, and a spring in each step. Knowing these are necessary lessons to fully understand and soak in our respective journeys with abundance and gratitude.

QH: As a global citizen, how do you incorporate compassion and warmth into your daily interactions? Kapoor: To be a global citizen is a privilege not to be taken lightly. It provides a platform to be the best version of yourself on a world stage – with compassion, kindness, empathy, positivity, and motivation for anyone who needs a gentle nudge, regardless of colour, or creed, on a daily basis. After all, we are one in all dimensions.

QH: What inspired your book, Let’s Talk About Life, and its focus on positivity? Kapoor: Let's Talk about Life is deeply personal to me, stemming from within and encompassing delicate experiences at multiple levels. I wanted to share authentically all that I grew from, aiming to be resilient, joyful, and positive. Stepping back and learning to be more of an observer than a participant allowed me to draw out lessons applicable to each individual – a therapeutic giveback on simple life lessons.

QH: How do your varied roles – from housewife to media personality – influence your perspective on life? Kapoor: My years as a daughter, housewife, and mother have been my most rewarding role, incorporating various responsibilities. As a professional, teacher, counsellor, and, most importantly, a friend – I've played them all. It's often exhilarating, frustrating, and challenging, but immensely rewarding. Beyond being a teacher, one unknowingly becomes a student of life, learning valuable lessons that empower and inspire, encouraging the sharing of good energy with sincerity and generosity.

QH: What advice would you offer to readers seeking a more positive and fulfilling life? Kapoor: Your soul and consciousness will always guide you right. Learn to listen to them, as someone wise stated, like a mirror that never lies and a shadow that will never leave you. Be positive, take responsibility, accept that life is unpredictable. Expand your heart and mind, focus so you do not get derailed, as life is what happens for us, not to us. Contact Kapoor on: sujatarubykapoor@yahoo.com Instagram: @sujataruby & @rubyscraft.qa

Talking To

Ras Al Khaimah beckons through sustainable tourism approach Iyad Rasbey, vice president, destination tourism development Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority speaks to QH on how the body will achieve its target of touching 3 million visitors by 2030. QH: What drives Ras Al Khaimah's tourism growth strategy toward 3 million visitors by 2030?

Iyad Rasbey, vice president, destination tourism development Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority

22 | QH | January 2024

Rasbey: Ras Al Khaimah one of the fastestgrowing destinations in the Middle East, our strategy revolves around several key factors. Firstly, we are doubling our hospitality portfolio with a pipeline of 22 properties adding over 7,780 keys to current hotel inventory over the next few years – this will pave the way towards our ambition to attract 3 million visitors by 2030. The next hotel opening in Ras Al Khaimah will be Anantara Mina Al Arab, followed by new properties from major brands including Sofitel, Rove, Westin, Nobu, W Hotels, Rove, Le Meridien, Nikki Beach, and JW Marriott to name a few. We also have the Wynn Resorts development, a multi-billion-dollar integrated hospitality project schedule to open on Al Marjan Island in 2027. The first of its kind in the UAE, the resort will cover an area of almost 250,000 sqm and will feature more than 1,500 rooms, shopping, meeting and convention facilities, a spa, more than 20 restaurants and lounges, extensive entertainment choices, a gaming area, and other amenities. We also understand that the future of tourism is inclusive and accessible. To that end, we have partnered with Sage Inclusion, a global leader in accessible travel consulting, to become the Middle East’s leading accessible tourism destination. As part of this collaboration, Sage Inclusion will work to assess Ras Al Khaimah’s accessibility credentials with a view to awarding international certification. Tourists are also attracted to our spectacular mountain, Jebel Jais, and we will continue to expand our nature-driven offering as we see robust growth in travellers seeking both adventure and eco-friendly experiences – another trend we expect to continue to grow.

Talking To

Jebel Jais, the highest mountain peak in the region

QH: How do global partnerships boost Ras Al Khaimah's appeal as a tourist destination? Rasbey: Our recent collaboration with Qatar Airways is crucial for the Emirate's growth, opening one of the largest global airline networks to the Emirate. This strategic partnership is part of our wider strategy to enhance global connectivity to Ras Al Khaimah and offers travellers greater choice, flexibility, and opportunities to visit our destination. Another significant collaboration is our Memorandum of Understanding with OMRAN Group, aimed at jointly promoting tourism between Musandam Governorate, Sultanate of Oman, and Ras Al Khaimah. This strategic partnership seeks to create seamless travel opportunities, leveraging the close proximity and shared mountain range between the destinations.

QH: What initiatives led to record visitor numbers in challenging times? Rasbey: Whilst we are a small emirate compared to others, we are dynamic and agile, making us able to react to industry changes swiftly. During the pandemic, we were the first to provide comprehensive stimulus support to hotels in Ras Al Khaimah, certifying the destination as safe to stay by Bureau Veritas and WTTC and offering visitors free return PCR testing. In 2022, we achieved its highest-ever annual visitor numbers with 1.13 million overnight arrivals, surpassing pre-Covid levels. This success was possible thanks to a robust pandemic-resilient plan that focused on positioning Ras Al Khaimah as a destination of the future, including a new brand that crystallised the destination as the Nature Emirate.

QH: Highlight key events that put Ras Al Khaimah on the global MICE map. Rasbey: While Ras Al Khaimah is predominately a leisure destination, we are also focusing on the fast-growing MICE market as part of the Emirate’s diversification strategy –

recognising that MICE visitors often stay longer and spend more and therefore represent an important segment. With strong strategies in place, we have already successfully positioned the Emirates as one of the fastest growing MICE destinations in the region. In 2023, we’ve experienced a 35 percent increase in MICE events and a 20 percent increase in MICE room nights compared with 2022. This is thanks to a series of initiatives and incentives that we launched to further support MICE business.

QH: How will Ras Al Khaimah balance growth with sustainable development in tourism? Rasbey: As well as aiming to attract 3 million visitors by 2030, we also have our sights set on becoming the leading destination for sustainable tourism by 2025. To this end, we are working to set the stage for conscientious expansion by prioritising balanced tourism through a considered approach to new hotel developments, consulting with hospitality partners to ensure thoughtful development and a measured pipeline to avoid rapid, less well-planned expansion and overcrowding. This, among other sustainability-focused approaches, have earned Ras Al Khaimah the accolade of being the first destination in the Middle East to be awarded the EarthCheck Sustainable Destinations Silver Certification.

Short Shots

Favourite travel destination: Ras Al Khaimah, of course! Most favourite book: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Most favourite meal: French cuisine ranks high for me. I also enjoy traditional Emirati cuisine – a dish of thareed never fails to satisfy. Best advice received: Strive for continuous improvement, instead of perfection. Unwinding after a long day: I find great relaxation in Ras Al Khaimah's landscapes. A leisurely walk along the beach or a hike in our beautiful mountains with family and friends clears my mind.

A unique experience in the Nordic Island nation – Iceland, a geological marvel and home to the Northern Lights, is defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, lava fields and gorgeous waterfalls. Avishikta Sarkar takes us through her Iceland experience in its minutest details! 24 | QH | January 2024

planned for an 8-day tour to Iceland last November – the right time to go if one wants to chase the Northern Lights, albeit the onset of winter. What most intrigued me to plan a trip to Iceland was ‘Diamond Beach’ in South Iceland, with glistening iceberg fragments giving it its name. The view, as one reaches, is indeed hypnotic and reminded me of how beautiful nature is with its spellbinding, magical vibe – immensely captivating to any nature lover. Day 1 I explored the capital Reykjavík, walking through the town. The capital, with its quaint streets, rows of colourful buildings all against the blue sky, the Nordic-style facades in every conceivable colour palate – red, yellow, grey, pink, white, grey. One must-visit is Rainbow Street – painted with all seven colours of the rainbow.

Travel Bug Close by is the Hallgrímskirkja Church which stands out with its expressionist design resembling the glaciers and mountains dominating the Icelandic landscape. Atop its bell tower, one has the best panoramic shots of Reykjavík. My next stop was sculptor garden, Harpa and the Sun Voyager. Since no country is complete without its history – I chose the futuristic-looking Perlan Museum for a sneak peak of Iceland’s past – everything from the gorgeous glaciers to geysers, volcanoes, mountains, and ice caves, so much so that I could explore a replica of an ice cave, and the aurora show. My recommendation is for everyone to visit Perlan first before travelling anywhere else in Iceland. Barnafoss – the Children´s Waterfall

Arctic adventures Day 2 started my road trip to every Arctic adventure: starting with the famous and breathtakingly beautiful Ring Road of Iceland that showcased the ‘Iceland in a Nutshell’ experience and exploring geysers and waterfalls during the day and embracing the experience of Northern Lights by night, witnessing the Aurora lights, a fascinating experience. The days would start at 8:00 am, with the dark sky and a winter sunrise as late as 9.00 am. We drove through the Golden Circle attractions including the historic Pingvellir National Park, home to one of the world’s first democratic parliaments, a geological wonder since it is right here that two great tectonic plates have slowly drifted apart, creating a rift valley, this is a sight surely not to be missed.

The land of gorgeous waterfalls The Gullfoss Waterfall allowed us to feel the water spray in the air – the great torrent of glacial water, sourced at Langjökull Glacier, powers through the falls. We witnessed an erupting geyser at Geysir Strokkur, the most active geyser, which erupts every few minutes. Next on the agenda were the two best known waterfalls on the south coast, both extremely different but equally beautiful – Seljalandsfoss Waterfall (the waterfall you can walk behind) and Skógafoss Waterfall (a mysterious, vigorous and graceful cascade dropping into the calm river below). Our last stop for the day was the pitchblack volcanic sand beach of Reynisfjara with its forceful waves and the remarkable and stunning Reynisdrangar basalt columns. These crazily shaped forms tower above the ocean waves. We drove past the cute fishing village Vík and spent the night in a hotel outside the village.

26 | QH | January 2024

The lava trail and glacier adventures On Day 3, our journey was across the Eldhraun lava field – Eldhraun means ‘fire lava´. Having witnessed the work of fire from the centre of the earth, we were then ready to set foot on ice! Our glacier adventures continued at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, with its glittering, and often very large icebergs calving off the receding Breiðamerkurjökul glacier, a tongue of VatnajökullT. The surreal natural ice statues float across the continually growing, and already very large, lagoon. The beautiful bluish coloured icebergs floating in the lagoon took us to the Land of the Frozen. The icebergs head to Diamond Beach (a name that comes from the shimmering ice on the coal-black sands) and the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Our walk to Diamond Beach gave us the chance to watch the floating icebergs and crystal shapes of ice on the shore – one reason behind my Iceland trip.

Colourful Nordic houses

Travel Bug Next, we went to explore the ice caves. Wearing crampons and walking on ice was a unique experience.

Magical landscapes and waterfalls

Rainbow Street

Day 4 saw us driving from Höfn, a scenic route to Djúpivogur, a charming little fishing village in the wild and unspoiled East Fjords. We saw the famous sculpture work, Eggin of Gleðivík by Sigurður Guðmundsson, the name translates beautifully into English to ‘The Eggs of Merry Bay’. This granite artwork represents the eggs of the 34 bird species which nest in the Djúpivogur area. While driving to the East, we spotted reindeer, took a short hike to a beautiful waterfall, enjoying the flora and fauna of Iceland enroute. Day 5 started early since we had planned to head to the remarkably powerful Stuðlagil Canyon and a second adventure Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall, with its voluminous flow that makes it impressive with an arching rainbow, amidst the breathtaking landscape surrounded with frozen grass. Our next stop was the geothermal paradise of Námaskarð, an amazing phenomenon to watch – complete with the steamy puddles, sulfur-scented steam, and moon-like landscapes. The colourful boiling mud pots create an amazing scene! We then headed to Dimmuborgir – a wonderland of stunning lava formations – which left us mesmerised enroute the enchanting and mystical Goðafoss waterfall. These graceful crescent shaped falls on the Skjál-fandafljót river rate very highly on lists of favourite waterfalls in Iceland. Goðafoss means ‘the Waterfall of the Gods’ or ‘the Waterfall of the Goði’. Late that afternoon, we reached Akureyri, the biggest town one sees outside of Reykjavík during the trip around the Ring Road. It is well-known for its stunning Fjord and mountain landscapes, wonderful downtown area and great restaurants. We started Day 6 with a whale watching boat tour from Dalvík, a fishing village near Akureyri. Dalvík is known for being one of the best places to spot

whales in Iceland, especially to see more than one type of whale and other ocean wildlife. In the freezing cold of - 8o° C and fierce sea wind, we went to explore the humpback whale. After whale watching we spend a little time enjoying the charming and traditional town of Dalvík. This is one of the premier skiing areas of Iceland, with beautiful steep mountains.

West Iceland Day 7 saw us in West Iceland – an area which Lonely Planet voted as one of the best destinations in 2016. Borgarfjörður has many splendid sights. We stopped at Deildartunguhver hot spring, the legendary waterfall, Barnafoss (the Children´s Waterfall), and the Hraunfossar cascade, where the low and wide falls emerges literally straight out of the lava field. On my final day, I explored Reykjanes Peninsula, starting with the Kleifarvatn lake, which is the biggest lake in the region known for its seismic activity. The lake, surrounded by mountains, is decorated with black beaches and interesting rock formations formed by weather conditions for centuries. The final destination was the geothermal blue waters of Blue Lagoon. It was perfect to wear the silica mask and soak in the calming waters. Relaxing in this environment was a real treat for mind, body, and soul and a good way to wrap up my Iceland tour. A destination like no other, this island nation will leave one awe-struck with its scenic beauty, colourful towns, breathtaking landscape and amazing fish. It should be on the bucket list of every traveller!

Life Hack

An unpaid yet the most rewarding profession As per the definition of work, it involves both mental and physical effort. When you hear the word "work," a typical office setting might come to your mind, encompassing roles such as bankers, managers, doctors, or teachers. Alternatively, it might involve working as an engineer, builder, plumber, or sanitary worker. The latter three professions require more physical work than mental effort but are often underpaid. But, says Sidra Ramay, there is another occupation that is entirely unpaid and demands more in terms of both mental and physical work.

F

or this role, you have to be available 24/7 and be medically fit, despite feeling a little drained inside. It involves being a caregiver, chef, housekeeper, healthcare provider, educator, advisor, and household manager. We’re talking about the role of being a housewife. A stay-at-home mom.

The mental load of motherhood

As a mother, your to-do list is always on your mind, and you're constantly thinking about the comfort of your children, their needs, worries, and milestones. Weekends mean a break from the hustle and bustle of life, but for a mom, they mean more work. Everyone gets paid for their job in monetary terms, but for mothers, the payment is in their children’s achievements, happiness, and prosperity. I do appreciate the amount of effort that fathers invest in raising their children, but from a mother’s perspective, I feel we're often more stressed about our children's behaviour, interactions, and studies. Therefore, a stay-at-home mom's job is no less than a full-time job. Many women often complain about not being appreciated. I think they have a legitimate reason because motherhood is about both the brain and the body working simultaneously. Your body needs food as fuel. Similarly, your brain needs some positive words to perform, even better. This is the salary you can pay to a mother, and it’s worth more than a million dollars.

28 | QH | January 2024

Motherhood may not be a “dream job” due to the immense challenges of parenting, yet it is a blessing. Also, happiness on your child’s face is ultimately your “success”. Moreover, the perks of being a homemaker include always being around your kids, nurturing them, and watching them grow right in front of your eyes. It's truly one of the biggest luxuries. Your children completely change your lifestyle; you have to prioritise their choices in every aspect of life. However, the "inner peace" you receive in return has no match. The most common question homemakers get is, "What's the point of wasting your life at home when you are doing 'nothing'?" These people assume that a mom's life is boring because she spends most of her time at home, so they believe she has "nothing" to do.

Career dreams and priorities It is easy to recall the names of hundreds of mothers who crave some “me time”. So, being a mom, and doing nothing is an oxymoron. Furthermore, being a homemaker doesn't imply that you don't have other career dreams. Perhaps you're simply waiting for the right time, or your kids are your primary focus. You may be waiting for your children to grow up before pursuing your career. Many mothers are juggling double duties as working moms. I salute their efforts, passions, and, of course, their energies. Your work often defines your identity. "Embrace your role and find empowerment in the work you do" – is all I’ll say to them!

A delightful gastronomic journey

Our culinary journey commenced with homemade guacamole and nachos, paving the way for the star starters: two ceviche variations. The sea bream in corn sauce and mango-dressed tuna fillet provided a refreshing and tangy experience, delicately balancing sweetness with zest. Following this, we savoured the quinoa salad and Cowboy salad, each bursting with vibrant flavours. The quinoa salad, enhanced with black-eyed peas, seasonal vegetables, and a lime-ginger sauce, offered a zesty flavour, while the Cowboy salad, decked with flank steak, black beans, and coconut oil, was a relishing delight. The feast continued with an impressive display of hot treats on large platters. From pulled beef machaca tacos to chicken quesadillas and slow-cooked lamb barbacoa, each dish displayed a tapestry of Mexican flavours. Accompanied by tortillas and a whole roast lamb, the flavours were accentuated by the classic Caipirinha. A sweet conclusion ensued with freshly toasted churros, tres leches, and a medley of tropical fruits, tantalising our taste buds with their rich and comforting flavours.

Musical charisma The brunch ambience was further amplified by exceptional performances from both the DJ and saxophonist, creating a lively and captivating atmosphere that resonated with the overall Boho-chic charm.
