Celebrating Ramadan in Qatar

As the crescent moon graces the Qatari sky, a sense of serenity and anticipation fills the air. Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, prayer, and reflection, transforms the vibrant nation into a haven of spiritual rejuvenation and cultural richness. In 2025, Qataris, along with the diverse expatriate community, will once again embrace the essence of this sacred time, weaving together tradition and modernity in a unique celebration of faith and community.

A time for reflection and renewal

Ramadan in Qatar is more than just abstaining from food and drink from dawn till dusk. It is a period of deep introspection, where individuals focus on strengthening their connection with the divine and cultivating virtues such as compassion, generosity, and patience. Mosques become centres of spiritual activity, with Taraweeh prayers filling the nights with recitations of the Quran and heartfelt supplications.

The joy of sharing and giving

The spirit of generosity is palpable throughout the holy month. Iftar, the evening meal that breaks the fast, is a communal affair, with families and friends gathering to share food and laughter. Many mosques and charitable organisations

organise mass Iftars, providing meals for those in need. This spirit of giving extends beyond meals, with individuals and organisations donating to various causes and supporting the less fortunate.

A culinary journey

Ramadan in Qatar is also a time for culinary exploration. Traditional Qatari dishes take centre stage, with families passing down recipes through generations. From the hearty Harees to the sweet and savoury Thareed, the Iftar table is a feast for the senses. Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, is a lighter affair, often featuring yogurt, dates, and other nutritious foods to sustain fasters throughout the day.

Ramadan Spirit

Traditions and festivities

While Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, it is also a time for celebration. Garangao, a mid-Ramadan tradition, sees children dressed in traditional attire going from house to house, collecting sweets and nuts. The streets come alive with festive decorations, and families gather in majlises (traditional gathering places) to socialise and enjoy the evenings.

Modernity meets tradition

Qatar's unique blend of modernity and tradition is particularly evident during Ramadan. While adhering to time-honoured customs, Qataris also embrace contemporary ways of celebrating the holy month. Many restaurants offer special Iftar menus, and hotels host lavish Ramadan tents, providing a modern twist to traditional gatherings.

A welcoming atmosphere

Qatar's welcoming and tolerant nature shines through during Ramadan. Non-Muslims are encouraged to learn about the traditions and customs of the holy month, and many cultural events and initiatives are organised to foster understanding and dialogue.

Ramadan in Qatar 2025

In 2025, Qatar will once again witness the transformative power of Ramadan. As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, the nation will come together in a shared experience of faith, community, and cultural heritage. Whether you are a Muslim observing the fast or a visitor eager to learn about this special time, Ramadan in Qatar promises to be an unforgettable experience.

A time to reflect, rejoice, and connect

As the month draws to a close, Eid Al-Fitr, the festival that marks the end of Ramadan, is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm. Families gather for prayers, exchange gifts, and enjoy festive meals. It is a time to reflect on the spiritual journey of the past month and to rejoice in the blessings of faith and community.

Ramadan in Qatar is a tapestry woven with threads of tradition, spirituality, and togetherness. It is a time for reflection, generosity, and celebration, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality of the Qatari people.

KEEPING YOURSELF FIT DURING RAMADAN

Ramadan is a time of reflection, discipline, and devotion, but maintaining a fitness routine while fasting can be challenging. With the right approach, you can stay active and energised throughout the holy month. Here are some expert-backed fitness tips to help you exercise safely and effectively during Ramadan.

Choose the right time to exercise

Timing is key when it comes to working out during Ramadan. The best time to exercise is either before suhoor (pre-dawn meal), after iftar (breaking fast), or a couple of hours before iftar. Lowintensity workouts before iftar can help burn fat without causing exhaustion, while strength training and high-intensity workouts are better suited for after iftar when the body is replenished.

Focus on low to moderate-intensity workouts

Fasting depletes glycogen levels, making it difficult to sustain high-intensity workouts. Opt for low-impact activities such as yoga, brisk walking, or light weight training to stay active without straining your body. If you prefer higher-intensity workouts, schedule them post-iftar when you have energy from your meal.

Stay hydrated

Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining endurance and preventing fatigue. Drink plenty of water between iftar and suhoor to replenish lost fluids. Avoid caffeinated beverages that can cause dehydration, and opt for hydrating foods such as cucumbers, watermelon, and yogurt.

Ramadan Fitness

Maintain a balanced diet

Eating nutrient-rich foods during suhoor and iftar helps sustain energy levels throughout the day. Incorporate complex carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats into your meals. Dates, a staple of Ramadan, are excellent for restoring energy quickly. Lean proteins like chicken, fish, and legumes help with muscle recovery, while fiber-rich foods like oats and whole grains provide lasting energy.

5 6 7

Prioritise rest and recovery

Fasting naturally affects energy levels, so ensure you get enough rest. Aim for at least 6–8 hours of sleep and take short naps if necessary. Stretching and mobility exercises can also aid in recovery and prevent muscle stiffness.

Listen to your body

If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or overly fatigued, adjust your workout intensity or timing. Ramadan is about balance, and pushing yourself too hard can lead to burnout. Modify your routine based on how you feel, and don’t hesitate to rest when needed.

Set realistic fitness goals

Ramadan is not the ideal time for intense weight loss or musclebuilding goals. Instead, focus on maintaining your fitness level and overall well-being. Gentle movement, staying active, and nourishing your body should be the priority.

By following these practical tips, you can maintain a healthy fitness routine while observing Ramadan. Remember, the key is to stay consistent, listen to your body, and embrace the month with a balanced approach to fitness and wellness.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY EATING IN RAMADAN

Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and community. However, it is also essential to maintain a healthy diet during this month to stay energised and nourished. With long fasting hours, it’s crucial to make mindful food choices to ensure overall well-being. Here are some great tips for healthy eating during Ramadan:

01: Start with a nutrient-rich suhoor

Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, is vital for sustaining energy throughout the day. Opt for complex carbohydrates like whole grains, oats, and brown rice, which release energy slowly, keeping you full for longer. Incorporate proteins such as eggs, yogurt, and nuts to maintain muscle strength and hydration-rich fruits like watermelon, oranges, and cucumbers to keep dehydration at bay.

02: Break your fast with dates and water

Traditionally, Muslims break their fast with dates and water, and for good reason. Dates provide a quick source of natural sugars for energy, while water helps replenish lost fluids. Avoid sugary drinks and opt for plain water or fresh juices to stay hydrated without excessive sugar intake.

03: Choose balanced Iftar meals

When breaking your fast, it’s tempting to indulge in heavy, fried, and processed foods. However, a balanced meal

should include lean proteins (grilled chicken, fish, or legumes), healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, nuts), and fiber-rich vegetables to aid digestion and maintain energy levels.

04: Eat slowly and avoid overeating

After a long day of fasting, it’s easy to overeat quickly, which can lead to bloating and sluggishness. Start with lighter foods like soup or salad before moving on to the main meal. Chew your food properly to aid digestion and prevent discomfort.

05: Stay hydrated between Iftar and Suhoor

Dehydration is a common concern during Ramadan. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water between Iftar and Suhoor. Herbal teas and coconut water are also excellent options. Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea, which can lead to dehydration.

06: Limit sugary and fried foods

While traditional Ramadan treats are delicious, they should be consumed in moderation. Excess sugar and fried foods can cause spikes in blood sugar levels, fatigue, and digestive issues. Instead, go for natural sweeteners such as honey or dates and healthier cooking methods like grilling or baking.

07: Incorporate light exercise

Maintaining physical activity during Ramadan can help improve metabolism and overall well-being. Engage in light exercises such as walking, yoga, or stretching after Iftar to aid digestion and keep your body active.

08: Plan and prepare meals in advance

To avoid last-minute unhealthy choices, plan your meals ahead of time. Prepare nutrient-rich meals that are easy to digest and provide sustained energy. Meal prepping can help you make mindful choices and prevent unnecessary indulgence.

QH: Chef, what inspires your unique culinary style and the flavours you bring to Jamavar?

Mohan: My inspiration truly stems from my childhood. It began at home, watching my mother cook for the entire family every day. I fondly remember helping my mother in the kitchen as a child, and those early experiences ignited my passion for cooking. Later, I was inspired by the great chefs I saw on television and in books, leading me to pursue a culinary career. And now, after many years of experience, I’m thrilled to be here with Jamavar.

Ultimately, the greatest reward is seeing the joy on our guests' faces. When people appreciate and enjoy your food, it completes the circle.

QH: What can guests expect from your exclusive Chef’s Creation menu?

Mohan: Jamavar is renowned for its culinary heritage, and we strive to present authentic Indian dishes in a modern and contemporary way. Our current five-course menu showcases the breadth and diversity of Indian cuisine. You'll find dishes like lobster idli sambar from South India, dishes from the tandoor, and specialties from Awadh, such as Rampuri biryani and murgh nihari. We've carefully curated a menu that captures the true essence and flavours of India.

Team Rafa claims historic victory at Visit Qatar E1 Doha GP

Rafael Nadal’s Team Rafa secured their first-ever win in the UIM E1 World Championship presented by PIF as the all-electric race boat series made waves at the Visit Qatar E1 Doha GP.

Despite consistently reaching the podium, a race victory had remained elusive—until now.

Pilots Cris Lazarraga (Spain) and Tom Chiappe (France) delivered a stellar performance, steering the RaceBird to victory in front of thousands of fans at Pearl Island.

Fierce competition at the top

The win propels Team Rafa to the top of the championship standings, holding off fierce competition from Steve Aoki’s Aoki Racing Team, winners in Jeddah last month, and Team Drogba, who finished second and third.

Hollywood icon Will Smith, owner of Westbrook Racing, added star power to the event as his team secured fourth place.

An emotional Cris Lazarraga, named PIF Pilot of the Race, reflected on the milestone win, “For the last year we’ve been looking for this win. We were determined to win. This is our mantra. Everything went smoothly and after so much hard work this is where we deserve to be.”

Challenges for reigning champions

Meanwhile, reigning champions Team Brady, backed by NFL legend Tom Brady, faced mixed fortunes. Emma Kimiläinen topped Final 1, but teammate Sam Coleman’s penalty in Final 2 dropped them to fifth place.

A thrilling season ahead

The 2025 UIM E1 World Championship is shaping up to be an intense battle, with all nine teams mastering the high-speed,

all-electric RaceBird. The Visit Qatar E1 Doha GP delivered thrilling overtakes, expert piloting, and tactical brilliance, keeping victory within reach for all contenders.

E1 CEO & Co-Founder Rodi Basso praised the event, “The Pearl Island provided a beautiful backdrop to a day of electrifying racing as the RaceBirds took flight in Qatar for the first time.

“Several thousand fans witnessed a race punctuated by drama and jeopardy as we welcomed new winners of an E1 race. This demonstrates the strength and depth of the competition and sets the stage for an incredible season ahead.”
