Publisher’s note... Welcome to Myanmar’s Monsoon! It is such a relief when the monsoon rain begins – the colours change as the trees and vegetation come to life and the temperature drops making life much more comfortable. Even during the monsoon there are plenty of places to visit in Myanmar as the season affects different parts of Myanmar in different ways. While a beach trip may be off the agenda until after October or November there are many other places that are good to visit in the rainy season when the weather is not so hot. Just before the rains started this year I was talking to people in the travel industry about how the monsoon has traditionally been the “low season” and found that the hotels, travel advisors and agencies are well prepared to help tourists navigate travel in Myanmar at this time of year. Readers of My Magical Myanmar will already know how much good travelers bring to the communities they chose to visit – economically, socially and culturally – no matter what the season. So I think it is time we thought of Myanmar as an “All Year Round Destination”. In this issue we have a photo essay “Flooded” that shows how people cope as the water rises in Yay Kyiin the Ayeyarwaddy Delta region at this time of year. And from Jessica, we have a report on all the things you can do and see in Bago – just 90minutes away from Yangon. The vibrancy of Yangon’s downtown area is something that can be experienced and enjoyed any time of the year and in this month’s cover story we focus on 31st Street. Akha By Noe Noe Aung

he Akhaare a hill tribe people who live in small villages in the mountains of the Shan State. According to some oral histories the Akha people originated from China and have been living in eastern Myanmar since the 18th century. The ethnic group was once known as Kaw but now prefer to be called Akha. The Akha people mostly live in Tachileik, a border town in the Shan State of eastern Myanmar, and in Kentung. They also live in Thailand, Laos and Yunan province in China. The Akha men usually shave their heads except for a small tuft of hair at the top. They wear dark blue trousers and jackets. The edges of their jackets are trimmed with colorful, knitted patterns. The boys wear skullcaps and the men wear dark blue headbands. The headdresses worn by Akha women are attractive, decorated with silver baubles, coins and beads. The women tie their hair into a knot like the Shan women, part it in the middle and let it hang down to cover both ears. The headdresses, which reflect the person’s wealth, are handed down to the daughters as a family inheritance. The Akha women’s dresses aresome of the most expensive costumes of Myanmar’s ethnic groups. The Akha women wear a plain black skirt and a black jacket decorated with patterns distinctive to the Akha. They also wear something similar to a Scottish sporran made of multi-colored beads and seashells hanging in front of the skirt. The Akha women embroider their clothes in a neat, colourfulcross-stitch. The Akha people worship the Nat spirits. Research indicates there are books written in the Akha language based on the Roman alphabet. The Akhapopulation today is estimated to be around 400,000.

Buddhism encompasses the Three Gems: the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha. It is not a religion in the strict sense of the word as it is not a system of faith worship. Each person must seek his own salvation, take responsibility for his own thoughts, words and deeds and not depend on a saviour. Buddha only showed the way to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s salvation and one is not expected to accept it blindly, for Buddha even advised his followers to examine his teachings, test them and accept them only when convinced of their veracity. Buddhism has evolved into two schools: Theravada and Mahayana. The goal of the Theravada devotee is to seek his own salvation by study and understanding the canon, by practicing mindfulness meditation and through these endeavours to achieve the freedom of Nirvana (Enlightenment) so as not to be reborn into the cycle of life.

Mahayana predominates mainly in North Asian countries. The Buddha

The great teacher Buddha Gautama was born more than 2600 years ago as Siddhartha, an Indian prince of the Sakkya clan who lived a life of luxury until he was twenty-nine. He then became aware of the miseries of mankind and renounced his throne and family to set forth on his search for the Truth that would free mankind from suffering. After six years of meditation he found it and his principles, based on the discovery of how to lead a harmonious life, are collectively called Buddhism. He passed away at the age of eighty. The Dhamma

In Dhamma, the teachings of the Buddha, he stressed the need to eradicate the

three roots of evil that are the causes of suffering: Lobha (greed, craving), Dosa (anger, hatred) and Moha (ignorance, delusion). Morality is the basis of the Buddhaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teachings and the Eightfold Path also known as the Middle Way teaches adherents to avoid these three roots of evil and to live a moral life. They are: 1. Right Understanding: having insightful knowledge of the Dhamma. 2. Right Thought: having thoughts that are free from lust, ill will and cruelty and thoughts of loving kindness, compassion, non-hatred and objectivity for all living beings. 3. Right Speech: abstaining from speaking false words, slander, rude, harsh and abusive language and idle, frivolous gossip. 4. Right Action: conduct that is moral,

honourable and not harmful to others. 5. Right Livelihood: avoiding a living that is harmful to others. 6. Right Effort: to be diligent in the avoidance of evil by thought, word and deed. 7. Right Mindfulness: to be consciously aware of all the activities of mind and body 8. Right Concentration: meditating to prevent violent emotions from arising. The Sangha

Members of the Sangha, or community of monks, study Buddhaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s canon and spread his teachings and live according to 227 rules that include eating only food that is donated to them. Monks are not required to be vegetarians, as the rule is to accept any food donated to them.

Pakokku is an old traditional town on the western bank of the Ayeyarwady River. This pagoda festival is the most important for all towns west of the Ayeyarwady and produce from the region, such as dried chili, homespun baskets and tobacco are sold every year at this huge country fair. The best thanakha trees, the bark of which is ground to make the purely organic make-up cream worn by many Myanmar women, grow in this area.

Many areas of country were fiercely affected during the floods. Regions in Ayeyarwaddy division such as Zalun, Ingapu, Yay Kyi and Tharbaung areas are affected during the flood. These photos were taken in Yay Kyi township during rehabilitation period. Many NGOs and local civil societies helped rehabilitation in flood-affected areas. Cyclone “Komen” caused at the beginning of August 2015 in 12 out of 14 States/Divisions in Myanmar (Burma) floods and landslides. The heavy rains affected so far some 1.1 million people – including an estimated 390,000 children and many internally displaced people –across almost every state. Over 100 people havelost their lives. Floodwaters have damagedaround 15,000 houses, forced 1,200 schools to close, and displaced thousands of individuals.

ince opening in 2004 as a coffee shop with simple snacks, Onyx has grown into a reliable food and wine restaurant known for its local cuts of beef. But back in the day (circa at least 2012), it was more than just a steak place. Onyx was an institution, a date night locale, and a source of affordable Western-style food. The city was there every evening. In the early stages of my current romance, I was invited mid-week to dinner. We walked into Onyxâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cramped tavern-like room with its splotched tablecloths and crumbs and quickly realized we knew at least one person at each crowded table. So much for privacy. It was the combination of inexpensive and reasonably tasty food that made the old location so popular, and it spurred the creation of what we dubbed the Onyx Challenge. For glory, each person had to singularly consume a whole fillet (often meant for sharing) and its sautĂŠed greens and potato sides, one extra side of potato wedges, and a bottle of wine. I can distinctly remember the owner chuckling to himself with a look of pained enjoyment, which is exactly how each challenger felt.

We flocked again and were surprised to find a decidedly grown-up space.

Previously on the corner of Inya Road and Dhamazedi Road, Yangon moaned when Onyx closed – perhaps permanently, we feared – in early 2015. Nearly six months later, the restaurant opened at a new location near the UBC with the same menu. We flocked again and were surprised to find a decidedly grownup space. What catches the eye first is Onyx’s departure from its “charming”

roots to a modern space: floor to ceiling windows, a long concrete table with bar stools, and a wireformed tree sculpture rising toward the ceiling. Wooden tabletops and black padded chairs are both set upon black metal frames for a sleeker vibe and on one of its concrete walls is an embellished grape vine, reflecting the restaurant’s name “Onyx Wine Tree”. trons politely move outside to puff on cigarettes, which is uncommon in Yangon. Though I usually opt for the whole fillet, which is tender and juicy, this time around, the table ordered the classic tenderloin (8,500 Ks), which comes with two medallions of beef, potato of your choice (wedges, baked, or mashed – I recommend the baked potato), and a mound of sautéed greens and toma-

toes. Truthfully, the greens usually remain relatively untouched on my plate, but we will sometimes order a fresh green salad. Steak sauces include pepper, mustard, Korean-seasoned (a nod to the co-owner’s roots), the popular herb butter, and a wine sauce. We also ordered the veal sausage with the same sides (6,500 Ks) and tried their new sandwiches. Made with bread from Onyx’s kitchen,

the roast beef sandwich (6,000 Ks) was much more like a steak sandwich with whole seed mustard, grilled like a Panini, and it would make a good lunch option. Much to my disappointment, I overlooked the black sign noting that day’s specials, which were salmon and grilled lamb at less than 10,000 Ks each. Had a waiter shared that information from the beginning, we would have tried the dish. The quality of the service has improved since Onyx moved to the new location, and our wait time – particularly for the potato wedges – was much shorter than memory serves. While prices have increased over the past year, Onyx continues to serve filling food at reasonable prices in a much more comfortable atmosphere. Even at 8pm on a weekday, tables were filled and steaks were being enjoyed. edona Hotel Yangon officially launched its new Inya Wing in May offering hundreds more luxury hotel rooms adjacent to the existing hotel overlooking Inya Lake. The developer of Sedona Hotel Yangon, Keppel Land Limited, expanded the Sedona Hotel Yangon with a new 29-storey Inya-Wing targeting business and leisure travelers. The new Inya Wing has 431 spacious and well-appointed rooms bringing the total number of rooms at Sedona Hotel Yangon to 797. In total there are more than 1,000 Sedona hotel rooms in Myanmar, including rooms at Sedona Hotel Mandalay.

The Prestige Suites offer a relaxing seating area with a large, comfortable sofa and an ensuite bathroom with glass viewing panels. This soup has many tastes and textures. You can play around with the combination of vegetables in the refrigerator that need using up. You can also adjust the taste of soup by varying the stock used. Ingredients

Method

• 2 onions, peeled and sliced • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced • 125g(4 ½ oz) chicken, duck or pork meat cut into thin strips • 1 Tbsp light soy sauce • 1 small choko, peeled, and cut into bitesize pieces • ¼ cup chopped Chinese cabbage • ¼ cup sliced long beans • ¼ cup chopped baby corn • ¼ cup sweet pea pods • 1-3 tomatoes, chopped • 2 spring onions (scallion) cut into 5-cm (2-in) lengths • 1-liter (32fl oz/4 cups) water • 2 eggs • Salt to taste • Ground white pepper to taste. •

• Heat the oil in a wok over medium heat • Fry onions and garlic until fragrant • Add the meat and light soy-sauce • Stir fry for 4-5 minutes until the meat is cooked • Add the choko, long beans, Chinese cabbage, baby corn, sweet pea pods, tomatoes and spring onions • Cover and cook for 1-2 minutes • Transfer the contents of the wok to a large saucepan • Add the water and bring to a boil over high heat • When the mixture is boiling add the eggs, stirring rapidly • Taste and season with salt and pepper • Cook another 1-2 minutes • Serve hot as part of a meal. Note: Make this into a very healthy and delicious vegetarian soup by omitting the meat and eggs, and adding a vegetable stock cube.

ob Percival walks the streets of downtown Yangon, discovering banana spring rolls, the old De Souza Pharmacy building, the songwriter for Iron Cross, and genuine snakeskin leather boots. It’s early morning, just turned 8.30 and already the temperature equals that of the street number. Everyone is talking about El Nino and the heat; how March was like last year’s April, and how April will be like May. Maybe the rains will come early. Today Marilyn, who’s from Taungyi is walking with me. The bottom block of 31st Street is taken up with the KBZ building, which in its former life, before its reconditioning, was where General Ne Win had his offices. We cross Merchant Street to the lower bottom block. The building on the right hand side is the Myanmar Oil & Natural Gas Building. Its name is spelt out in beautiful retro Burmese letters down an attached concrete sign, a brilliant architectural detail. This building (actually 668 Merchant Street) has rare wooden shutters along its side that stand

a couple of feet out from the window providing shade for the workers inside. Outside on the pavement, the Ma Hta Ta Bus company officials collect money from the buses as they complete each route; buses infamous for their fast and reckless driving. It’s shady here in the narrow street. From a piece of old iron hangs some paddy rice for the sparrows – a merit making gesture common throughout Myanmar. On the right is a small laneway, remarkably clean – a sign of what could be – where you can buy a bottle of local honey for 7000 Kyats. U Tut’s Tea Shop has been here for 10 years, and is open from 6am to 4pm, with very good tea for 250K, and the much loved nga pyaw kyaw, banana spring rolls, for only 100K. At No. 40 there are some distinctive wrought iron verandah railings featuring unicorns, which are much loved by architecture buffs and known to have originated in Scotland. At No. 46 you can buy pure local peanut oil at 3400 Kyats a litre, all the way from Sittwe in Rhakine state. A bit further along at No. 48B women are unpacking longyi from Kyan Khin that will be taken to Thein Gyi Zay market for sale for between 1,100K and 3,500K. There is an unusual red brick building at No. 50 that was built in 1912. A beautiful set of three-storey terraces stretches from Nos. 52-64. Across the road at No. 53 we

come across Cloud 31 Gallery. A young girl tells us it’s her Uncle U Te Lay’s gallery. Backtracking down the street, we find another annex of the gallery and inside we run into Wai Chit Ko-Gong, who is the songwriter for Iron Cross and one of its initial founders. Further along the street there are caged fantail pigeons, looking a bit out of place, plus numerous examples of 1920s Gudgerat-built terraces, including the 1923 Murawari Community Hall, gaily painted in pink and blue. At the corner of Mahabandoola Road is the magnificent former De Souza Pharmacy building, which now houses MPT’s main office and deserves a chapter of its own. Crossing Mahabandoola Road we reach the upper middle block with the Cholia Jam’E Mosque on the corner. Here, along the street you can find numerous rubber stamp suppliers. An old-style, wooden-handled stamp, made to your order, will cost you 2,500K and be ready after one day. A newer-style stamp with a plastic handle will cost you 5,000K and be ready in just 30 minutes. On the right is the Challenge Amusement Centre. Once inside, we do not feel welcome and a feeling of suspicion towards us fills the air; maybe it’s because we are tak-

ing photos and notes. Anyway, each coin needed to play the machines costs a meagre 200K. You can practice your dance steps on the Dance Dance Revolution for 3 coins, test your riding skills on the Go! Go! Jockey for 2 coins, and gamble on the non-gambling Roulette and Bingo Galaxy games. Maybe the atmosphere feels better there once the sun goes down. There are lots of printers in this block, especially for wedding invitations. We stop at the 75-year-old Chan Myae shop owned by U Myint Aye. We announce our pretend wedding and are told it will only cost us 100,000Ks for 500 invitations. Further along at No, 145 there is a single-storey 1912 building with a dreaded red demolition sign, and at the end of the block a classic 1927 Gujrat building; its name spelt out in concrete letters. We cross Anawratha Road to the upper block of 31st Street. Here, on the left, are numerous shops selling shoes and boots, but one, owned by Ko Soe Hlaing, stands out from the rest. He is selling genuine snakeskin, recycled leather boots with high heels for 65,000Ks, and cowboy leather boots costing up to US$200. This is the real thing and not to be missed! From Nos. 175185 there are more classic 1920 residential buildings; a streetscape now under threat. At No. 198 is the recently renovated Scott Hostel, which is a good example of how these old buildings can be restored and brought back to life. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now very hot, approaching 40 degrees, and we escape to our final destination, the Genius Coffee shop owned by social enterprise entrepreneur, Ngwe Tun. Here is coffee that is grown by local Danu people in the Shan hills. Enjoy your coffee knowing that you are supporting local farmers and families. Social change one bean at a time!

Bago is also full of stunning pagodas and Buddha statues: in fact it has more Buddhist temples than any town of a similar size in Myanmar. It’s easy to spend a day or a weekend taking in all its sights, the most unusual of which may be an enormous python. Even for pythons, this one is big. Official measurements haven’t been made for a Guinness World Record listing, but it may even come close to the world’s largest. The

5.2 metre (17 foot) Burmese python has a monastery named after it. Its home in Snake Temple includes a sun deck and swimming pool, and no doubt plentiful meals of chickens and other snake treats. Some say the snake is a reincarnation of a Bago princess from an earlier time and temple caretakers and devotees view the beautiful animal as lucky and auspicious. when thousands of monks collect alms, or at 10.30am when they eat lunch. That may seem an incredibly early time to eat lunch but do remember that monks, like many Burmese, start their day before dawn. It’s perfectly acceptable to take photographs and even take a peek at the monks’ living quarters – but remember that this is their home and not a tourist site, so avoid being intrusive and if a monk appears camera shy or shy in general, please respect that and don’t persist. The Golden God Temple, also known as Shwemawdaw Pagoda, is one of the most sacred sites in Myanmar. Its stupa takes the crown as being the tallest in Myanmar – it towers into the sky, standing 114 metres (375 feet) tall. It has a strong resemblance to the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon but is completely devoid of the crowds. A 10-day festival is held each year at the Shwemawdaw during the full moon of the Myanmar lunar month of Tagu, which falls in March or April. It is a colourful event full of atmosphere and joyful Buddhist devotees. Here’s a fun fact about the people of Bago: the men are thought to be the most chivalrous in Myanmar. This reputation has been cultivated since ancient times, when the symbol of Bago became the female hamsa bird standing on the back of a male hamsa bird. This represents the generosity of the male in providing the only dry place for the female bird to stand in the middle of a lake. Chat to a few guys and see for yourself whether the reputation is deserved. Getting there and away There are two options for getting to Bago – from the bus station near Aung San Stadium in downtown Yangon, or at AungMingalar bus station near Yangon International Airport. A return ticket costs K5,000 and one-way is K3,000. Which bus station you opt for just depends on where you’re staying in Yangon. It’s also possible to hail a one-way or return cab – although many cab drivers in Yangon will be reluctant to venture that far from their usual patch.

Music Â Â Traditional Myanmar music is played without notes. The orchestra leader plays the drums with his fingers while seated within the circular frame hung with 21 small drums. The gong circle is in a smaller, lower frame. There is the oboe as a wind instrument, and tiny cymbals and bamboo clappers keep the tempo. The biggest drum is hung from a golden, decorated frame topped with the mythical creature, the Pyinsa Rupa. Solo instruments are the xylophone with bamboo slats, and the elegantly curved and tasselled Myanmar harp.Â

Dance

Myanmar choreography is series of movements gracefully flowing from one step to the other with slight pauses in between, when the pose is rigidly held for a few seconds. The pace can be fast or slow according to the type of dance. The criteria are that humans should dance as if they were marionettes and marionettes, as if they were humans.

Zat

Performance Zat is the traditional Myanmar dance-drama led by a male dancer. A large number of pretty female dancers will make up the corps de ballet, dancing duets in turn with the leading man. The repertoire includes a classical play, comic sketches, a musical interlude called Awpair Ra (opera), and a Â modern play. The show ends at dawn.

Anyeint

Performance Anyeint is a dance troupe led by female dancer. The principal dancer comes on stage last after three or four of her protĂŠgĂŠs have taken their turn with their own style of dancing and their own songs. The danseuse is usually accompanied by four comics dressed in jackets, large checked waist-garments and wraparound turbans. The dancing is quick and lively. The program lasts from about 7pm to midnight.
