Publisher’s note... Dear Readers.... The days have become been hotter and summer is arriving. Myanmar might face one of the strongest summers in awhile this year; which is a great reason to travel to some of Myanmar’s cooler places. My Magical Myanmar team has tried their best (as usual) to bring a fresh batch of stories to our readers this month. The content is slightly different to usual in our March magazine. This month, our writer, Jared Downing, has offered some ideas about places worth prioritising on your destination list when visiting Myanmar and your time is limited. He has also written a “Basic Myanmar Survival Guide” with some tips for enjoying your stay in Myanmar. For travellers with time to enjoy Yangon we have two reviews of new places to try. If you’re looking for a good night out we recommend Roof Alchemy that has opened a new level to their bar where they serve creative molecular cocktails. We have also reviewed a great new Vietnamese restaurant in town. Hope you enjoy. This month we have spotlighted the oil fields of Min Hla township, in Magway region, in a photo spread. It is a fascinating place to visit and certainly off the beaten tourist trail. If you visit there, or anywhere now that the summer heat has arrived remember your water bottle, stay in the shade - perhaps use an umbrella like the Myanmar people do, keep calm and read My Magical Myanmar.

Sincerely,

Yamin Htin Aung Publisher

Yangon’s City Hall a European design with Myanmar flourishes By Noe Noe Aung

round Sule Pagoda in downtown Yangon is a set of magnificent heritage buildings that reflect the past of Yangon. From the Mahabandoola Park, next to Sule Pagoda, you can see a panorama of these buildings – the former Ministry of Tourism building, Sule Pagoda itself, City Hall, the former Rowe & Co building, Emmanuel Church and the former High Court building all show the grand past of Yangon. Yangon’s City Hall is an enormous four-storey edifice located in the very centre of downtown Yangon. It was a unique structure when built as it was the first large-scale masonry building to combine European design with traditional Myanmar flourishes. In 1886 Yangon’s municipality authorities purchased Ripon Hall, a community dance hall located on the site of the present

City Hall. As the Ripon Hall was not big enough for the team, a larger building was planned that would reflect the city’s growing importance as a regional trading hub and capital city. In 1931, the Municipal Committee held a design competition. The consulting architect to the Government of Burma assessed over 30 entries and a winning design was chosen. However, the following year, World War I broke out and the plans were shelved. The construction could not begin until over a decade later in 1925. At that time, nationalistic sentiments were growing and it was demanded that the building incorporate Burmese architectural features so that the new design of City Hall would reflect the ornamental features seen in the buildings of the ancient capital Bagan. Though European members of the council disagreed with the use of religious-inspired

architecture for a civic building, Burmese politicians won the debate and the famous Burmese architect Sithu U Tin was selected for the job of reimagining City Hall. The construction was conducted in stages. The north wing was erected first. Construction progressed anti-clockwise and the final wing to be built was the section facing Mahabandoola Garden Street, which was not completed until 1940. The building has remained in use as Yangon’s City Hall until the present day. The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) occupies the building and manages the city’s urban needs. The building was for many years a creamy tangerine colour that became stained with dark patches of mildew. In 2011, it was repainted a strikingly luminous lilac with purple finishes. People

Chin

a unique tradition of facial tattooing By Noe Noe Aung Photo by Maximillian Horsley

Chin people mostly live in the Chin hills in the northwestern part of Myanmar, in the Chin State bordering India. The mountain ranges where the Chin live includes Myanmar’s highest peak Mount Victoria. The Chin are one of Myanmar’s major ethnic groups and the origin of their ethnicity is Tibet-Mongolians. There are more than 20 Chin languages and many tribal groups. The best-known tribes are the Asho, Chro or Cho, Khumi, Zomi, Laizo, Laimi, Matu and Mara. The Chin people are traditionally animists but Christian missionaries who arrived in Chin State in the late 1800s converted many to Christianity. A unique practice of Chin people is facial tattooing. It is traditionally common for Chin women to have multiple tattoos on their faces and the tattoos represent different mythical stories of importance to the Chin people. A famous story represented in the tattoos is about a Burmese King who took a beautiful Chin lady as his new bride and brought her to his palace. The Chin bride was unhappy away from her homeland and she ran away from the palace to return home. So she would not be recognised she made incisions with a knife on her face. Chin has more than 50 tribes and women of each tribe wear distinct tattoo designs, including: Pa Mae – which covers the whole face including the ears and eyelids; Pa Pyouk – which drops black spots across the whole face; Pa Khyaung – which puts eight lines across each cheek; Pa Kyar – which draws four lines and four drops; and Pa Wine – which mixes circles and lines. The true beauty of the tattooing is when the women match their tattoos with traditional costumes, large earrings and necklaces. In 1891 when the British Government conducted the Burma census Chin were not counted as their were dismissed as a hill tribe. In the 2015 Census conducted by the Myanmar government the total population of Chin was recorded as 478,801 in the 13 townships of Chin state.

S

ymbolic representations of footprints of the Buddha (Buddhapada in Sanskrit) are found in all the countries to which Buddhist teachings spread and are especially revered in Myanmar. Thailand and Sri Lanka. It is common for Buddhapada to feature the 32, 108 or 132 distinctive marks of a Buddha. Buddhapada are found on the The Chauk Htat Gyi Reclining Buddha Image in Yangon, which is featured elsewhere in this magazine. The 108 symbols found on Buddhapada represent the three worlds of Buddhist cosmology, the tri lawka. The 108 symbols comprise the: 59 symbols of the inanimate world (okkasa lawka), 21 symbols of the animate world (sutta lawka), and 28 symbols of the world of impermanence (sinkara lawka). The symbols on Buddhapada are often set around a Sekkya (in Sanskrit, Dharma-chakra) wheel and arranged in a grid and in certain order.

Min hla oil field Photo By: YAT group

The main product of Magway region is ‘petroleum’. It produces most of the oil and natural gas in Myanmar. The region is allegorically called as ‘the oil pot of Myanmar’ as there are plenty of oil fields located in the Magway region. Min Hla oil fields are one of the well-known fields in the region, oil wells have operated in the area for more than hundred years, and private constructors continue to ply their trade using old-fashioned methods in spite of giant multinational interests moving into Myanmar’s energy market.

Good value

Vietnamese food in Yangon By Natty Tangmeesang Photo by teza hlaing

ired of oily food or on a diet? Look no further than Vietnamese cuisine. Vietnam House recently opened in a quiet neighborhood on Pan Hlaing Street, opposite Asia Royal Hospital, in Sanchaung Township of Yangon. The restaurant offers your favourite fresh and healthy Vietnamese dishes in a cozy and friendly atmosphere. My guest and I had early dinner there one evening. We were the only table. The staff was attentive in explaining the menu, but there are also photos of the food on the wall to guide customers who are not familiar with Vietnamese food. We started off the meal with spring rolls, which the restaurant claims are “different than at other Vietnamese restaurants in town”; thin rice paper wraps with soft rice vermicelli, vegetables and pork and prawn in one wrap. Yes, you get two meats in one! It is served in two rolls along with two kinds of dipping sauces—soybean and fish sauce for only K1,000.

For a’la carte, a popular dish among Vietnam House’s Vietnamese customers living in Myanmar is the braised pork and eggs with coconut milk.

For a main dish, Pho lovers should not miss the Vietnamese noodle soups. The Pho Bo comes with medium-rare or well-done beef, or both, in one bowl for just K3,000. Such a good deal! If you are not a beef lover, you can have the choice of sliced chicken with your Pho but note that the soup broth is made from beef. My guest and I asked Ms Phuong, the intern manager of the restaurant who has been managing the restaurant since it opened, for a menu recommendation for people who could not eat beef. She suggested their latest dish on the menu “Vietnamese soup with pork leg”, which is a popular dish from Southern Vietnam. “You were the first one to try. We just put the photo up on the wall yesterday,” she said. Though I am not a fan of boiled pork leg — usually I like it roasted - but I enjoyed the dish very much. The meat was very soft and so were the carrots, mushroom and rice spaghetti. The soup is a bit sweet but you can add lime and chili for a more intense flavor. Other main dishes include fried rice with seafood and fried noodles with seafood mixed with vegetable (Kya San Kyaw), which is a healthier version of the normal Kya San Kyaw. Vietnam House uses yellow noodles with less oil, less soy sauce, oyster sauce and more veggies. It is different to what I have eaten in Myanmar where it is usually cooked in a Chinese style. For a’la carte, a popular dish among Vietnam House’s Vietnamese customers living in Myanmar is the braised pork and eggs with coconut milk. This menu item

may not be as healthy as others. The dish is made of pork belly cooked with coconut milk. Served with lettuce and tomato, it was well presented. The pork was tender in texture, but a bit greasy and I recommend eating it with rice. For those who don’t mind fried food, the fried chicken here is a must order. The chicken was very tasty. The chefs mix the chicken with garlic, pepper and fish sauce for 10 hours before cooking.

Your experience at Vietnamese House will not be complete without traditional Vietnamese coffee. You can choose your coffee either with milk or without. When it comes to iced coffee, I would say Vietnamese coffee here is one of the best and cheapest in Yangon. They also offer Vietnamese traditional tea, which tastes mild but is actually quite strong. The restaurant opened in December

with two Vietnamese chefs and one Burmese chef. Initially, it targeted local Myanmar diners, but Vietnam House has also become popular among foreigners living in Yangon wanting a taste of Vietnam. “As a new restaurant, we plan to improve our kitchen and services in the near future,â€? Ms Phoung said. Final thought ‌ the restaurant is suitable for all-day quick meals. The size of each serving is decent. It is also budget

friendly. Most of the dishes and drinks are under K3,000, except the Vietnam Special Steamed Fish at K6,000. Alcoholic drinks are not listed on the menu. No dessert. The restaurant opens from morning till late night daily. I suggest visiting in the daytime, as it is an open restaurant and at night it can be a little bit uncomfortable because of mosquitoes. Overall, it was a satisfying experience and definitely worth a try.

efore it gets to the drinks, Roof Alchemy seems like a regular bar. Western music sweeps in the atmosphere of a simple stylish bar with black leather sofas. It is 8pm on a day when the weather has been hot and humid and young faces continuously appear at the entrance and the bar gets more and more crowded as if the nightlife of Yangon has been switched on. Roof Alchemy opened two years ago in the area surrounding the Yangon International Hotel where CafĂŠ 365, Music Box and Singapore Kitchen are located. To celebrate their second year Roof Alchemy is opening a new level with new furnishings and a new menu of unique cocktails. view. I had heard from friends a little about all the different, sophisticated, smoky cocktails but had never been along to try them before. Roof Alchemy introduced its new level with a new “mystery menu on February 17. The menu promised a completely new offering of molecular goodness, exclusively serving experimental molecular cocktails and shots, made by a Cocktail Professor from Amsterdam. On the new menu, there are 16 entirely new signature cocktails. What I like about the new menu is that each cocktail is pictured along with an explanation of its ingredients and the kind of flavours the customer can expect. It is so easy for the first-timecocktail-drinker who might otherwise be confused or for people who enjoy experimenting and want to try something different.

With the science we can do things we couldn’t do before. Before it was not possible. But now we can do what we are doing I guess because of our knowledge of certain chemicals ... its simple ......

“What I always ask is ‘what do you prefer?’. Some people don’t even know their preference. Some haven’t had a cocktail before. So I try to ask some questions like: ‘do you like style, do you like fresh’ and a little bit about the flavour profile the guest would like. And then we can make something especially to your taste,” said the Cocktail Professor. Roof Alchemy is trying to approach cocktail making as a kitchen would approach cooking a menu: lots of homemade syrups and infusions, fat washed and smoked spirits, aromatic mists and smokes, carbonation, ice baking and other molecular techniques. “With the science we can do things we couldn’t do before. Before it was not possible. But now we can do what we are doing I guess because of our knowledge of certain chemicals ... its simple. Nowadays you have all these abstract ingredients like seaweed and so on and so we can do crazy stuff like this. We have one cocktail on the menu, we serve it in glass pipe, you blow in it and it actually blows,” owner of Roof Alchemy, Ko Chan Nyein Soe said. “We try to take those inspirations from using chemicals to make a different texture. Then what happens is you can create strong, different textures; you can create

substances that float and bubbles,” he added. I ordered Buzzling Ice as I thought it looked cute with three colours in the one glass. The menu refers to it as “vibrant, colourful and bustling”, like the atmosphere at Roof Alchemy. It is made with lychee, mango and watermelon with the addition of Bombay gin infused with lychee, lemon juice, homemade rosemary syrup and flavoured ice cubes. The surprise of Buzzling Ice is it will transform because of the different flavours in the ice cubes, getting fruitier by the minute. Actually I loved the shot the bar offered before my drink. It was called Raindrops – a crystal clear bubble over a betel leaf. The taste was sharp, sweet and strong. All the customers there that night seemed to be having fun trying the new cocktails. The music got louder, the crowd thicker. It is clearly a popular venue with a young Myanmar crowd. My friends were testing different cocktails one after another, taking photos of the cocktails when they arrived and posting them on social media. Seeing the unique cocktails that the waiters were bringing I thought: “This is not a bar. It’s a lab”. Level 2 is open on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday every week from 8pm to midnight. Cocktail prices are reasonable considering the science and creativity. They start form 8,000 MMK.

NGA SOKE YAH CHO

(Fish cakes in Gravy) by Mohana Gill

mymagicalmyanmar.com >>> march 2016

In focus >>> NGA SOKE YAH CHO (Fish cakes in Gravy) | 43

Fish cakes are very popular in Myanmar, and they are used in many dishes, from salads and noodles, to soups and curries. They are sometimes also deep fried and served as a snack. In Myanmar, the featherback is typically used when making fish cakes. If featherback is not available, carp or other white fish can be used. Scraping the flesh of the fish, then pounding the paste makes it firm. In the modern kitchen, this step can be simplified by using a blender.

Ingredients • 700g(1 ½ lb) boneless fish • 4 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped • 1-cm9 ½ inch) knob ginger, peeled and sliced • Salt to taste • Cooking oil for frying GRAVY • 4 Tbsp cooking oil • ½ tsp ground turmeric • 2 onions, peeled and sliced • 1-cm (1 ½ -in) knob ginger, peeled and finely sliced • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped • ½ tsp paprika • 2-3 green chillies, chopped • 1 Tbsp fish sauce • 1 Tbsp tamarind liquid • Salt to taste • Handful coriander leaves for garnish Method • Prepare the fish cake • Place the fish, garlic, onion and ginger in a blender and process into a paste • Remove to a bowl • Add salt • Moisten your fingers and shape the fish paste into balls or flatten them • Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat • Cook the fish cakes for about 3 minutes on each side • Remove and drain on paper towels • Prepare the gravy • Heat the oil in frying pan over medium heat • Add the turmeric and onions and stir-fry lightly • Add the ginger, garlic, paprika, chilies and fish sauce • Lower the heat and simmer until the oil surfaces • Add the tamarind liquid • Add the fish cakes and heat through • Taste and season with salt • Add the coriander and dish out • Serve hot with rice, a hot soup and some vegetables. Note: I usually cook the fish cakes directly into the gravy so they remain succulent and tender, unlike the traditional method above, which gives the fish cake a chewy texture.

Two weeks in Myanmar:

Little time for a big journey By Jared Downing

Yangon

Yangon, formerly Rangoon, is one of Southeast Asia’s last “little big cities,” with a modest, ageing skyline peppered with half-finished towers. In terms of accommodation, Yangon excels in high-end luxury hotels and shoestring hostels. Check out Backpackers Hostel downtown, but be sure to book in advance.

departures >>> two weeks in myanmar | 47

Day 1 Aim to arrive in the morning and spend the day getting settled in, then for sunset head straight to the mighty Shwedagon Pagoda, a stunning complex brimming with history and hidden secrets. At night, Chinatown comes alive with a thriving market and hole-in-the-wall street BBQ joints along 19th Street.

Day 2 This is where the jet lag really starts to kick in, so fight it off by exploring the narrow streets of downtown Yangon lined with colonial-era architecture. For a lesser-known gem, try the colossal Reclining Buddha at Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda, and then enjoy an early dinner at a restaurant around shady Kandawgi Lake.

48 | departures >>> two weeks in myanmar

Bagan Time to strike out for Bagan, the legendary city of kings. If you have the cash, book a flight from Yangon, or take a bus from Mingalar Bus Station. If you want to save time, overnight VIP busses are surprisingly comfortable. The bus station is located in New Bagan, east of the archeological site, and the airport is in Nyaung U. Both locations have a variety of simple, inexpensive hotels and guest houses.

Day 3

Once the seat of the mighty kingdom of Pagan, Bagan is all about history. Rent a bicycle or motorbike from a hotel and spend an entire day simply exploring at least 2,000 stuppas built between the 9th and 13th centuries, some towering in the distance, others left hidden in a field. For dinner, try a restaurant along the river, like the Pavilion Lounge, to enjoy a decent meal and watch the sunset over the might Ayeyarwady River. In Old Bagan, a few upscale restaurants and hotels, like Bagan Golden Palace, offer traditional dance performances and puppet shows.

mymagicalmyanmar.com >>> march 2016

departures >>> two weeks in myanmar | 49

Day 4 Bagan has the most famous sunrise in Myanmar. Get up early and climb one of the larger pagodas. For the best view in the house, nothing beats a sunrise seen from a hot air balloon expedition, but book well in advance.

Day 5

If you leave Bagan any way other than on a riverboat, you’ll be missing out on one of the classic Myanmar adventures. Boats to Mandalay leave in the afternoon from the dock in New Bagan. If you have the time, opt for a lazy overnight cruise through the fishing villages and countryside along the Ayeyarwady. Bedding is not provided, and the open-air deck can get chilly at night, so an extra blanket is a good idea.

50 | departures >>> two weeks in myanmar

Mandalay Welcome to yet another royal city—Myanmar’s last, in fact, before the British unseated King Thibaw in 1885—brimming with historical and religious treasures, but also with a robust nightlife scene. Unfortunately, taxis can be a bit of hassle to find in Mandalay, so stick with a motorbike or a bicycle. If your hotel doesn’t have these, they will point you towards one of the numerous bike/motorbike rental shops.

mymagicalmyanmar.com >>> march 2016

departures >>> two weeks in myanmar | 51

Day 6

If you indeed took the slow boat, you should arrive with enough time to get settled in and have a decent dinner. Accommodations are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. Nylon Hotel and Victory Point Hotel are good for the price. For shoestringers, Dreamland Guest House, a funky, family-run hostel/art gallery/music school, offers shared dorms and private rooms from US$10-25. If you still have the energy to hit the town, Mandalay has a variety of restaurants and nightlife spots, including Café City for some classic American style dishes, Aroma Wine bar and Lot 65 Gastro Bar for drinks.

Day 7

This is the day in town. The city centre is dominated by the huge walls of the old palace, with a smorgasbord of cultural and religious treasures around Mandalay Hill to the northeast. Begin the day by walking around the beautiful reconstructed structures of the old Royal Palace, then head to the southwest section of town to explore the side streets and alleys lined with colonial teak houses and hole in-the-wall sugar refineries, ending up at the teak-carved Shwe In Bin Monastery, as tranquil as it is magnificent. Then head to the foot of Mandalay Hill and roam the markets, pagodas and artifact stalls. As the day wanes either drive or, if you’re up for lots and lots of stairs, climb up to Mandalay Hill Pagoda for an unrivaled view of the city at sunset.

Day 8

Some of Mandalay’s best spots aren’t in the city at all. If you’ve rented a motorbike, a day trip to the ancient city of Inwa is a lovely drive past sunflower fields. Inwa itself, which can also be reached by taxi, is all shady lanes and half-buried, 1,000-year-old ruins, which you can tour by horse cart. After Inwa, head north to Amarapura for the iconic U Bein Bridge. The world’s longest teak bridge is much-photographed, and worth a visit at sunset.

Hsipaw Surrounded by misty fields and bubbling mountain streams, this quiet hamlet tucked away in the Shan Hills is the perfect escape after Mandalay if you’ve been craving the fresh air. But an overnight trek and homestay into Pankam or another mountain village is the main draw, so skip it if you aren’t keen on the great outdoors. Catch a bus from Mandalay or the famous white-knuckle train through the Gokteik viaduct, if you’ve got the bravery and the time - the train takes about 24 hours.

Inle Lake Nyaung Shwe

Day 9

This vast, tranquil wetland area, surrounded by cultural and historical treasures, rivals Bagan for the crown jewel of Myanmar tourism. Take a bus from Mandalay to Nyaung Shwe, the tourist’s home base at Inle Lake with many good, affordable hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and tour services.

departures >>> two weeks in myanmar | 55

Day 10

The best way to get a feel for what the lake has to offer is by taking a guided boat tour. There are many agencies around Nyaung Shwe who can organise boat tours to places on the lake like the otherworldly lake village of Inthein, the hundreds of Kakku pagodas, and the jumping cat monastery. Tours usually end with a sunset dinner over the water.

Day 11 Rent a bicycle and strike out on your own and explore the hidden pagodas and fishing villages around the lake perimeter, including the half-land, half-water Maing Thauk. Then enjoy a tour and wine tasting at Red Mountain Vineyard & Estates, one of only two Myanmar wine producers.

Day 12 Catch a morning bus and head back through the Shan Hills and Ayeyarwady Basin to Yangon. If you have the time to spare, the capital city of Nay Pyi Taw, with its $40-a-night four-star hotels and deserted highways, is worth an overnight stop.

Day 13-14 Welcome back to Yangon. Spend the day recuperating or squeeze in some sights you missed, like the Myanmar Races Village or the National Museum. At sunset, catch the dazzling fountain show at the Myanmar Culture Valley, with its long, fountain-lined promenade under the Shwedagon pagoda it is a fitting place for a farewell.

How to get stuff:

A basic Myanmar survival guide By Jared Downing

It is the very best time to travel in Myanmar. After years of isolation, the country is still something of a hidden gem, but now with more modern conveniences than ever before. But it can still be difficult for a newcomer to find what they need during their trip. This guide will help you get up to speed.

mymagicalmyanmar.com >>> march 2016

Getting

in

Several once-closed land crossings are now open, but on-arrival visas are still difficult to come by. Your best bet is to stop first in Bangkok and apply for a visa at the Myanmar Embassy. It usually takes two days to process a visa, but you can pay extra to have it processed on the same day you apply.

Getting

around Most places in Myanmar can be reached by plane and bus. Boats and trains are also plentiful, but tend to be slower and sometimes—as with the notorious railway between Mandalay and Hsipaw—nerve-wracking. VIP busses are comfortable, often top-of-the-line imported Scania busses with built-in entertainment systems. Taxis are more than plentiful in Yangon, but can be more difficult to arrange in other cities. Rented motorbikes are an easy and fun way to see the towns and countryside outside Yangon.

departures >>> How to get stuff | 57

58 | departures >>> How to get stuff

Getting

Money ATM

ATM machines are relatively abundant these days. They tend to work with most foreign credit cards, but it might take a few tries. You do not need to carry tremendous amounts of cash, but it’s a good idea to keep a MMK100,000 Kyat emergency stash somewhere when traveling outside the cities. Western Union branches are abundant and easy to use, but only for receiving money. Many foreign banks will not accept any wire transfers from Myanmar.

Getting

hotel Housing regulations for foreigners are still rather stiff, and accommodation is relatively costly, but on the plus side, hotels that are open to foreigners tend to be clean and comfortable. You can find budget hostels for around $10 a night in the popular tourist areas like Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan. For towns a little further from the well-trodden path, like Hpa-An, expect to pay $20-$30 per room.

departures >>> How to get stuff | 59

mymagicalmyanmar.com >>> march 2016

Getting

sick First, you can relax somewhat when it comes to vaccines. Don’t worry about encephalitis unless you’re Indiana Jones. An antimalarial (the most popular being Doxycycline and Malarone) might be advised if you are spending a lot of time in rural areas. But malaria is not a big threat if you are travelling in the urban areas. Dengue fever is the biggest threat, and the only way to prevent infection is by protecting yourself from being bitten by the mosquito – use repellant and keep covered when mosquitos are biting.

Getting

well You no longer need to flee to Bangkok to seek aid. Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw all offer perfectly serviceable care for most calamities, including broken bones, dengue and rabies vaccines if you have an encounter with a strange animal. As a tourist, your best bet will be the international wing of Parami Hospital in Yangon.

60 | departures >>> How to get stuff

Getting

clean food & water Yes, street BBQ and tea shop curry can look a bit dodgy by western standards, but it is generally safe to sample - thanks in no small part to the heaps of oil in most Myanmar dishes. Don’t guzzle tap water, but it is fine for brushing your teeth. Bottled water is everywhere. All this being said, sometimes you just get sick. It happens. Pack basic stomach medicine.

Getting

connected Wi-Fi is common these days, though usually slow. Cell phone data is also inconsistent, but can be fast enough even to make Skype calls and stream Netflix. To get yourself connected… Buy a SIM card for one of Myanmar’s major carriers (MPT, Oredoo and Telenor) for around US$1. Pop it into your own phone or buy an inexpensive smartphone (starting at around $80) on the street. Buy MMK30,000 worth of top-up cards for your carrier. Purchase a month’s worth of internet data for around MMK25,000, and keep the rest for ordinary phone calls.

mymagicalmyanmar.com >>> march 2016

Getting

0ut Now that certain land crossings are open, why not use your newly-acquired Myanmar skills to make an overland adventure to your next destination? The road from Yangon to Mae Sot, Thailand, takes you past Kyaiktiyo and the famous Golden Rock, Hpa-An, and through the Kayin Hills on the newly-completed Asia Highway. Things to bring: Mosquito repellent Stick deodorant ATM card and backup, if you have it A passport photocopy Ear plugs Stomach medicine Things not to bring: Traveler’s checks Lots and lots of cash Iodine or water filter

River Gallery Celebrating 10 years supporting Myanmar artists By Noe Noe Aung

T

welve years ago, when New Zealander Gill Pattison came to Myanmar she had no intention of starting an art gallery. “I was living with my family in Hong Kong and I was working with a bank for many years. And then it felt like time for change. Time for a new adventure ... so we came to Myanmar and I was really not exactly sure what I was going to do,” Gill says, as we sit reflecting on how her River Gallery has now come to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Gill says she has always enjoyed art. Like many art lovers she has enjoyed visiting galleries, looking at paintings although she doesn’t have any formal qualifications in the art field. “I always liked to look and always liked to buy paintings - actually more than I like to

buy shoes and bags,” Gill said with a laugh. When she arrived in Myanmar, it was 2004. There was an ASEAN-wide competition organised by Phillip Morris and a lot of Myanmar artists were painting for that competition. There was a lot of hope and excitement among artists to have an international competition they could enter. “I started looking at the art when I came here, and after awhile, I found some really good artists,” Gill said. Unfortunately, three weeks before the art works were to be submitted to the competition, it was suddenly announced that Myanmar would not be included in the ASEAN competition. “It seemed to me a real shame. They all put in the effort; they had done their best work.

“I talked with Ross Dunkley [an Australian businessman, Co-Founder of The Myanmar Times] as he is another art lover. He decided that we would run a national competition. So we launched the Myanmar contemporary art work competition,” Gill said. They believed that many of the paintings that were being prepared for the ASEAN competition would fit will into their national contemporary art competition and they were correct as many artists submit-

ted their work. Thirty finalists were chosen and hung in a gallery space. Gill says that seeing 30 different paintings from 30 different artists in a gallery space provided a vision of what a contemporary gallery in Myanmar showing Myanmar artists’ work might look like. “Really that was the thing that planted the seed of the idea for our gallery,” she said. River Gallery was born and has now celebrated its 10th anniversary. During the years, the gallery has

faced challenges. Before 2012, all paintings and art works had to pass censorship criteria before being displayed. They could not relate to politics, Aung San Suu Kyi, be critical of the government, be controversial in any way or depict any nudity. “Then there were changes. The censorship was eventually removed and artists could do the things that were in their mind for a long time. Then a lot more opportunities came because Myanmar could really enter the global art world much more

than before,” she said. The River Gallery began showing modern Myanmar art pieces and installations. Gill says the core group of the original 30 artists who took part in the national competition had remained involved in the gallery over the past 10 years. River Gallery has two rooms now. The first one in The Strand Hotel Annex opened in November 2005. The second River Gallery opened in October 2013 at Chindwin Chamber Hall in 38th street

just next to The Strand Hotel. Both galleries are in colonial era buildings with large windows, good lighting and have simple, elegant displays. River Gallery’s 10th Birthday Exhibition was held at the Chindwin Chamber gallery with a gathering of friends, art lovers and artists. More than 50 paintings and two installations have been displayed for the gallery’s birthday celebration. The exhibition is running in both River Galleries until March 6. Gill’s next dream is to develop

ways to support Myanmar art students. “The art infrastructure here is undeveloped. There is no public support, no education, no foundations … everything is kind of being done privately or with a little bit of support from abroad sometimes, but nothing very systematic. What I want to do is I want to do a plan of some way for Myanmar art students to go to international art schools and art places and organization foundations,” Gill said.
