The bravest battle ever fought

THE PLOT

In 1897, the British Empire having conquered most of India was trying to infiltrate Afghanistan. Fort Saragarhi, in the North Western Frontier Province, was a small communication post used to relay messages between two major military forts. Havaldar Ishar Singh (Akshay Kumar), is a proud Sikh warrior who prefers to live by his community rules and is often in conflict with the orders of his British officers. As a punishment, he is sent to Saragarhi, where a bunch of twenty unruly, undisciplined Sikh soldiers await him. It is this bunch of cheeky but lovable rogues that Ishar leads to battle an army of 10,000 Afghans on 12th September, 1897.

The Collection ’m in the heaviest turban and beard I’ve ever had to wear. So I shaved my head to make my life a little easier. I’m known for hating wigs, prosthetics and so on, and ‘Kesari’ is quite demanding. It’s probably my favourite look, though it’s taxing to fight and sweat in this avatar. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Singh then worked with Arya Babbar for his first Punjabi language film ‘Yaar Annmulle’ in 2011. military historians as one of history’s greatest last-stands. All 21 Sikh non-commissioned officers and soldiers of other ranks who laid down their lives in the Battle of Saragarhi were from the Majha region of Punjab and were posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit, at that time the highest gallantry award which an Indian soldier could receive. The heroism shown by the Indian soldiers is an eternal inspiration for all.

LAXMAN UTEKAR

GUEST INTERVIEW

Director, Luka Chuppi

A veteran Director of Photography, he has shot films such as English Vinglish, Dear Zindagi and Hindi Medium. Laxman Utekar now makes his Bollywood directorial debut with Luka Chuppi, a romantic comedy starring current heartthrobs Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon. He takes us behind the scenes.

How did you prepare for making Luka Chuppi I come from Maharashtra, and it was important for me to get a real feel for the marital milieu and dialects of Uttar Pradesh. So my writer and I took a year and a half to finalise the script. During this time, we travelled several times to Agra, Lucknow and Gwalior to meet young couples and their parents. The interactions gave us amazing material for the story.

3 great reasons to watch Luka Chuppi It is a stressbuster of a film; full-on entertainment for the entire family. We’ve got a terrific star cast. Besides the two leads, you’ll love the work of key characters played by Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi and Vinay Pathak. The music is fantastic, too.

For instance? Well, one of the couples actually told us that forget living in, they found it extremely difficult to even meet without being watched. Sometimes, they had to set up a date at 4 am outside a public washroom!

What inspired the idea for the film It came from a real-life story! My film’s writer Rohan Shankar was in love with a lady, who proposed a live-in instead of a marriage. This created a dilemma— even today, it is difficult for the idea of cohabitation to find acceptance in our society. This got me thinking about making a film on the subject.

Fun Fact “We shot the film in September-October, and it was raining constantly in Gwalior. Every day, we would have to wait for the rain to stop before we could start rolling the camera. But the energy on our sets was so positive that we did not lose a single day. In fact, we were able to wrap up the 45-day schedule in 43 days.”

APARSHAKTI KHURANA

GUEST INTERVIEW

Actor, Luka Chuppi

Known for his endearing persona and superb acting in hit films such as Badrinath ki Dulhania and Stree, Aparshakti Khurana plays yet another interesting character in Luka Chuppi, a romantic comedy about live-in relationships. He talks about the film and his role in it.

film is Abbas, and I am the friend who tries to help Kartik Aaryan’s character tide over tough situations. I keep coming up with helpful ideas, but whether they actually turn out to be helpful or not, you’ll know only when you watch the movie.

What excited you about Luka Chuppi The subject is so relevant and relatable—live-in relationships are still far from being easily accepted in many parts of our society, and films like this advocate the idea of “live and let live,” which I think is so important.

The most fun part of the shoot It has to be the climax. I cannot reveal it, obviously, but it is the highlight of the film.

So does the film convey that message? Absolutely. And it does so with a light touch, without getting preachy. What’s your character like in Luka Chuppi I play a Muslim guy for the first time. My name in the PVR MOVIES FIRST

Fun Fact “We shot the film in Gwalior, which happens to be the film’s lead actor Kartik Aaryan’s hometown. So we got home cooked food on the sets, which is such a luxury! And we rounded off our meals with Bahadura ke Laddoo, which come from a famous sweet shop. They are made with pure ghee and are deliciously addictive!” PAGE 22

Elizabeth Moss

Elizabeth Moss is the girl to watch out for. She has made a habit of playing women who refuse to just fall into line. She is an actress of great control who can say a lot while seeming to do very little and whose performances are described as “coming from the inside out”. Alongside this restraint comes a natural warmth, which makes even the most closed-off character appear sympathetic. It’s a skill that has made her one of the most promising stars in the film domain. FILMS: Her first screen role was in 1990, when she appeared in the NBC miniseries ‘Lucky Chances’. She then starred as the youngest daughter of the President in the television series ‘The West Wing’ (1999–2006). She shot to prominence with her role as a secretary-turnedcopywriter in the series ‘Mad Men’ (2007–2015), which earned her six Emmy Awards nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. Detective Robin Griffin in the BBC miniseries ‘Top of the Lake’ (2013, 2017), which won her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Film; and Offred in the Hulu series ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award PVR MOVIES FIRST

‘Listen Up Philip’ (2014), ‘High-Rise’ (2015), ‘Queen of Earth’ (2015) and ‘The Square’ (2017). STAR POWER: Elizabeth has been the picture of steely determination onscreen, imbued with the kind of palpable vulnerability that ensures audiences collapse right along with her when the moment calls for it.

Away from the camera, she is relaxed and a little goofy with a reputation as a joker. Mark Duplass, who has worked with her says, “She’s joking around causally and then you yell ‘action’ and her heartbeat goes up to 150 beats per minute.”

This powerful actress has earned six Emmy Awards nominations and a Golden Globe nomination for her character in the series ‘Mad Men’. In 2014, she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for ‘Top of the Lake’. In 2017, she won the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and as a producer for Outstanding Drama Series for as a producer for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. In 2018, she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. UP CLOSE: Elizabeth graduated high school two years early. Initially, she had aspirations of becoming a professional dancer. In her adolescence, she travelled to New York City to study ballet at the School of American Ballet. She continued to study dance throughout her teenage years. She is a lifelong member of the Church of Scientology. Her mother is a musician and her father manages jazz musicians. How James Cameron Made Titanic With 11 Oscars and over $2 billion at the box office, the now legendary Titanic remains the most memorable tribute to one of the world’s most staggering maritime disasters. But the story behind the storytelling is perhaps even more jaw-dropping. Taking the Plunge: Before making Titanic, James Cameron sank to the bottom of the ocean to see the actual wreckage of the doomed ocean liner himself. An avid and passionate deep sea diver, he ended up spending more time on the ship than any one of the original passengers did. The Prep: The sheer scale of the film required building an entire studio and the largest standing set of all time. Rosarito, a beach resort on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula was chosen as the site for the studio complex, vast water tanks and ten-storey-high, 775-foot-long ‘Big Boat’ set. First Assistant Director Josh McLaglen remembers his first visit to Rosarito. “Jim and I drove down to what was then a vacant lot. We bought a model of Titanic in the back of a pickup, carried it out and set it up on two sawhorses. Then Jim started studying the elements. He triangulated the light, the solstice of the sun, the wind direction, the position of the ship, how close it would have to be to the cliffs so we could see the ocean. It was incredible, watching him envision everything we needed to do to pull the movie off.” “It was awe-inspiring,” recalls Billy Zane (who played Cal Hockley, Kate Winslet’s villainous fiancé). “They’d built an entire city to make a film! When I showed up there were three tower cranes spinning against the skyline and thousands of employees milling about. It was like being there on the Titanic. Nothing could have prepared you for the sheer logistics of it.” To effect the sinking, the ship was constructed in sections, each controlled by massive hydraulic risers. The forward section had a riser allowing it to sink 30 feet. The rear deck could go from zero to 90 degrees, all the way from level to 12 o’clock. The challenges of filming on a set the length of two football pitches and the height of an office block were hair-raising. “So much of what we did would now be done in the computer,” says Russell Carpenter, the film’s Director of Photography. “But with Titanic, when you see the 800-foot PVR MOVIES FIRST

Masters@Work

ship, it’s an 800-foot ship; when you see 500 extras running along the deck, it’s 500 extras. And given what you do see, the RMS Titanic breaking apart and sinking before your eyes, that’s mind-boggling. Cameron hired 20 lifeguards from San Diego, each responsible for ten people. The big tank was only three-anda-half feet deep, but it was absolutely freezing. They had to pull people out on the verge of hypothermia. Working With Water: Only a director with Cameron’s depth of experience could have pulled off the scene where the water comes crashing into the Grand Staircase room. The entire set was to be destroyed in one take, and Cameron knew he had only one chance to get it right. And he did. The post-sinking scenes were shot in a 350,000 gallon tank where the frozen corpses were created by applying a powder on the actors that then crystallized when exposed to water. Wax was applied to hair and clothes to create a wet look. In the scene of Rose looking through the corridors for Jack, the water used was actually from the Pacific Ocean at the Baja California, Mexico set. The water was so cold that when Rose gasps when she first dives into the water, it was actually Kate Winslet’s genuine reaction to the frigid ocean. Set Secrets: In the scene in the beginning where the captain orders full-speed ahead and the shot moves down into the boiler room, the set was really just about three boilers but Cameron had huge mirrors installed to visualise a great big long room. The piece of wooden paneling that Rose floated on after the sinking is based upon a genuine artifact that survived the sinking and is on display at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. During the part when Rose and Jack are at the bow of the ship (when Rose says “I’m flying, Jack!”), the sunset was real and not CGI. James Cameron knew that sunset was the perfect time to do that scene. James Cameron, not Leonardo DiCaprio, drew all of the pictures in Jack’s sketchbook. In post-production, Cameron, who is left-handed, actually went as far as to mirror-image the sketching shots so the artist would be appear to be right-handed, like DiCaprio! PAGE 27
