Trivia

01

The film has been written by a woman (Christina Hodson), directed by a woman (Cathy Yan) and has women producers (Robbie and Sue Kroll).

02

Cathy Yan is the first Asian woman to direct a superhero movie. She is second woman to direct a DC film after Patty Jenkins.

03

04

05

The film’s lead actress Margot Robbie conceived of this movie while filming Suicide Squad almost five years ago. Her company, LuckyChap Entertainment, has produced the $75 million film. Harley adopts a hyena in this film as a pet. In the comics, she kept two hyenas named Bud and Lou (named after comic duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello). Birds of Prey features two cop characters that are named after Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. Timm was the co-creator of Batman the Animated Series and is an artist for DC comics and Paul Dini is the creator of Harley Quinn.

PVR MOVIES FIRST

Harley Quinn has always had some incredible attributes. Despite her overtly quirky nature, Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel was an accomplished psychiatrist. As such, Harley’s intellect is well above average. Those impressive mental faculties are equally juxtaposed with extensive physical prowess. As well as being an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant, Harley often demonstrates exceptional agility and is an expert gymnast.

Who Is Cathy Yan

Born in mainland China, Yan was raised in Hong Kong and Washington D.C., before moving to her current residual base in New York. She graduated from Princeton University and enjoyed a successful career in journalism, working as a Wall Street Journal reporter in New York, Hong Kong, and Beijing. She was one of the youngest writers in the paper’s history to land multiple stories on the front page. Yan made her directorial debut Dead Pigs in the World Cinema Dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival. The film focuses on a feisty salon owner, a sensitive busboy, an ambitious expat architect, and a disenchanted rich girl who collide when thousands of dead pigs float down the river towards a rapidly moderniSing Shanghai. It won high praise from critics for its delightfully quirky appeal. PAGE 9

story How It All Began In 1927, During a dinner at his home, MGM studio chief Louis B. Mayer and his guests talked about creating an organised group to benefit the film industry. A week later, 36 invitees from all the creative branches of the film industry dined at Los Angeles’s Ambassador Hotel to discuss the idea. Soon after, the International Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded, with Douglas Fairbanks as the President.

OPENING 2020 The 92nd Oscars® will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

Biggest winners Three of the most successful films in Oscar history are Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997), and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), with each winning 11 Oscars.

7 Movies That Missed Out Midsommar: Florence Pugh gives a nerveshattering performance as a woman coming to terms with her own power in the midst of a psychological downfall. An Oscar nomination was widely expected. The Farewell: Wang was a favourite to land an Oscar nomination in the same category but was snubbed in favour of more established names. Golden Globe winner Awkwafina was also shut out of the Best Actress race, while Best Supporting Actress underdog Zhao Shuzhen didn’t make the cut either.

Most Oscar wins and most Oscar nominations Walt Disney won 22 Academy Awards from 59 nominations, and four honorary Academy Awards.

Her Smell: As destructive punk rocker Becky Something in Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell, Emmy-winning actress Elisabeth Moss turns in career-defining work that landed her Gotham Award and Indie Spirit Award nominations for Best Actress. An Oscar nomination should have followed suit.

One character, two Oscars Marlon Brando (right) and Robert De Niro (Ieft) are the only actors who have won an Oscar for playing the same character, that of Vito Corleone in The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974) respectively. Hitchcock Alfred Hitchcock was nominated five times for Best Director, but never won an Oscar.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire: This Cannes winner was one of the best reviewed movies of the year, and strong enough to be a contender for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Actress. But not many foreign films across categories are picked, so it lost out. Booksmart: Even after some of the year’s best reviews, a Golden Globe nomination for Beanie Feldstein (Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical), and a Writers Guild of America nod for Best Original Screenplay, Olivia Wilde’s instant-classic comedy “Booksmart” got sidelined by the others. Uncut Gems: One of the best reviewed and most commercially successful indies of 2019, the film broke the $40 million mark at the U.S. box office. Directed by Josh and Bennie Safdie, it stars Adam Sandler, Kevin Garnett and Julia Fox. It deserved a place in the nominations. A Hidden Life: Many critics believe the religious historical drama is Terence Malick’s strongest achievement since Tree of Life. Fox Searchlight paid in the $14 million range for the movie at Cannes, but it never sparked much Oscar buzz.

Lead Actor, Thappad

Pavail Gulati, who shot to fame with the web series Coincidence (2017) made his debut in Karan Johar’s multi-starrer film Kalank. He now plays the lead role in Thappad, a social drama set in Mumbai.

The key takeway from Thappad

A great reason to watch Thappad

On working with Anubhav Sinha

It is a very realistic film about the journey of a middle class couple. The female-oriented subject defies narratives that typecaste women. It questions the society and will deliver a poignant message on world domination by women.

I’m privileged to work with a director who reinvents himself with every film. It took me less than 10 minutes to say yes to the film, because reading the script, I knew this is a subject that needs to be talked about.

Tell us about your role in the film

Fun Fact

I’m not at liberty to tell you much, but I play the lead opposite Taapsee Pannu, and through my character you learn the consequences of what happens when a man denies the power of women.

Director Anubhav Sinha’s 2018 social thriller Mulk received widespread applause.

Nolan’s childhood was split between London and Evanston, Illinois, and he has both British and US citizenship. He began making films at age seven, borrowing his father’s Super 8 camera and shooting short films with his action figures. Nolan’s films explore human morality, the construction of time, and the malleable nature of memory and personal identity. He tells stories on a tremendously large scale, and it’s all too easy to be swept away the sheer scope of his vision and ambition. Nolan has directed, co-written and produced recordshattering films like Memento (2000), Insomnia (2002), Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), Inception (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Man of Steel (2013), Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017). The turning point in Nolan’s career occurred when he was awarded the chance to revive the Batman franchise in 2005. In Batman Begins (2005), Nolan brought a level of gravitas back to the iconic hero, and his gritty, modern interpretation was greeted with praise from fans and critics alike. One of the best-reviewed and highest-grossing movies of 2012, The Dark Knight Rises concluded Nolan’s Batman

trilogy. Due to his success rebooting the Batman character, Warner Bros. enlisted Nolan to produce their revamped Superman movie Man of Steel which opened in the summer of 2013.

5 Signs You’re Watching a Christopher Nolan’s Film

• At the Start Nolan often begins his movies and introduces his main characters with a close up of their hands performing an action. • Hard Cuts Frequently uses hard cuts when transitioning to the next scenes. This is most prominent in his films from Batman Begins (2005) onward, especially in The Dark Knight (2008), where, in some instances, the hard cuts he uses will go so far as to nearly cut off character’s lines in order to quickly and efficiently get to the next scene. • Prior Connections All of his films contain a major referential connection to his prior films (e.g. the Joker performs a deadly magic trick in The Dark Knight (2008); Nolan’s previous film, The Prestige (2006), was about magicians performing magic tricks that turn deadly). • Obsession with Psychological issues His films usually revolve around characters that are afflicted with some kind of psychological disorder. His protagonists will often resort to tactics of physical or psychological torture to gain information. In Batman Begins, Batman uses the hallucinagenic fear compound on Jonathan Crane in order to gain information about his “boss”; in The Prestige, Angier buries Borden’s assistant alive in order to get Borden to talk; in The Dark Knight, Batman throws Salvatore Maroni off a building, breaking his legs, in order to gain information about the Joker; in the same movie, Harvey Dent puts a gun to one of the Joker’s henchman and flips a coin for his life every second he doesn’t talk to scare him into talking. • At the end His films almost always end with a sudden and very effective smash cut to black. Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and especially Inception are prime examples.
