The film is a sequel to the 2017 blockbuster It, which set numerous box office records, earning over $700 million worldwide to become the highest-grossing R-rated horror film of all-time. It was based on a bestselling novel by Stephen King.

The Story:

Evil resurfaces in the town of Derry as director Andy Muschietti reunites the Losers Club in a return to where it all began with IT Chapter Two. PVR MOVIES FIRST

MOVIE OF THE MONTH

t’s scarier and more intense than It. – Andy Muschietti, Airector

PAGE 7

Twenty-seven years after the Losers Club defeated Pennywise, he has returned to terrorise Derry once more. Now adults, the Losers have long since gone their separate ways. However, people are disappearing again, so Mike, the only one of the group to remain in their hometown, calls the others home. Damaged by the experiences of their past, they must each conquer their deepest fears to destroy Pennywise once and for all, putting them directly in the path of the shape-shifting clown that has become deadlier than ever. All the characters battling the malicious evil in the film have one thing in common. They are successful in their work, in their job and their adult life, but they’re broken. All of them, in a way, are repeating a pattern. They’re enslaved to a childhood trauma that will not leave them alone.

The Cast

IT Chapter Two stars James McAvoy (the X-Men movies, Split, Glass) as Bill, Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Mama, Molly’s Game) as Beverly, Bill Hader as Richie, Isaiah Mustafa as Ben, James Ransone as Eddie, and Andy Bean as Stanley. Reprising their roles as the original members of the Losers Club are Jaeden Martell as Bill, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley, Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie, Finn Wolfhard as Richie, Sophia Lillis as Beverly, Chosen Jacobs as Mike, and Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben. Bill Skarsgård returns in the seminal role of Pennywise.

The Build-up

Muschietti’s inventive technique for portraying horror means we’re constantly on the backfoot along with the characters. The trailer promises an ominous watch—the scratching record player, the suddenly twitching inhuman figure down the hall, the sense of tension before the reveal

of Pennywise. It’s also proof that something truly horrible is on the way in the full movie.

The Villain

Pennywise still keeps that childlike façade, because he still has to lure children to him, but he definitely has a side that is more vindictive. There’s a sense of revenge and anger, and a need to take vengeance. He’s meaner, he’s angrier, he’s smarter. He’s always a step ahead.

The Director

Andrés Muschietti, born August 26, 1973, is an Argentine film director and screenwriter, best known for directing the 2013 horror film Mama and the mega-hit horror thriller It, which prequelled It Chapter 2.

Trivia 01 02 03 04 05 06 07

Although this movie is about the adults, the kids will be making appearances in some flashback scenes. Jessica Chastain and Jess Weixler, who play the female leads, are real life best friends. It: Chapter Two has a runtime of 165 minutes, making it one of the longest horror movies ever made. Bill Skarsgård, who plays Pennywise, stated in an interview that even after filming had wrapped, he would have nightmares of his character in the film. In these nightmares he would have to battle Pennywise just as the actors in the film do. This is the second Stephen King adaptation released in 2019, following Pet Sematary. Second collaboration with actress Jessica Chastain, Director Andy Muschietti and Producer Barbara Muschietti. All three worked previously on the horror movie ‘Mama’ (2013) Bill Hader was unaware that Bill Skarsgård can actually move his eyes in two different directions. Hader asked Skarsgård what kind of editing was done to achieve the effect in the first movie. Skarsgård, responded by saying “Oh, you mean this?” and doing it, causing Hader to freak out.

Wow Factor

IT Chapter Two will feature a brand-new scene written by Stephen King. Though the scene is being kept under wraps, it is completely original to the movie. The addition was the iconic author’s idea. Interestingly, he doesn’t often get involved in the big or small screen adaptations of his work. PVR MOVIES FIRST

Director, Laal Kaptaan

The talented Navdeep Singh is known for his gritty thrillers Manorama Six Feet Under (2007) and NH10 (2015). He’s now directing Laal Kaptaan, already much talked about for its offbeat storyline. Over to the director: The plot of Laal Kaptaan sounds interesting. What’s the theme? The plot is a revenge drama about a man who has been searching his quarry for over 20 years. And as the story unfolds, we learn more about the events in the past that led to the present events that are unfolding before us. Elements that set the film apart? It’s a totally fresh look at the period. The entire texture of the film is different—from the locations to the costumes to the art. Saif will be seen in a totally offbeat role, playing a Naga sadhu - one half of two warring brothers. The new look features Saif unlike you’ve ever seen him before—with kohl eyes, dreadlocked hair, and an PVR MOVIES FIRST

unkempt beard as he smears vibhuti (ash) on his face. Also watch out for actors Zoya Hussain and Manav Vij; they’ve done a great job. What inspired the idea for the film The idea came from some footnotes in history. I was reading about the period between the decline of the Mughals and the rise of the East India Company. This was a fascinating time, the mid 1700s, when the Maratha confederacy was on the ascendant, but several other kingdoms, big and small, were vying for power. So the thought was to set a fictional story in this really astonishing and amazing time. Tell us about the film’s setting and mood It’s an intriguing action drama. The story is set in Bundelkhand, which is the area between MP and UP. The overall feel is a combination of gritty and grand. It’s the kind of film that is definitely going to generate a genre and narrative style of its own. PAGE 22

Ethan & Joel Coen

Masters@Work

Known to the public as the Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen are a living legend in Hollywood. They have spent their careers making films together, often exploring different genres with playful and satirical variations on tried and true conventions. They write, direct, and produce the films together, and together have been nominated for 13 Academy Awards. They won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and have written a number of screenplays for other directors. Their overall filmmaking success lies in their playful dialogue, and their immense detail to setting, which often comes across as a powerful character in their films. Cinematographer Roger Deakins, who has worked with the Coens on several films, says the brothers are so in sync that he can ask either of them a question and get the same answer. “The Coens have their films so clearly conceptualised in their heads, they know how to get what they want.”

It’s a Coen Creation if… • The story focusses on small-time crooks. • The build-up to the climax is violent and shocking. • The film is set in wide open country, be it Blood Simple or Fargo. When scouting locations, the Coens are likely to say a place looks “too interesting” they want bland.

Fun Fact Because the Coens thought it seemed vain to put their names in the credits so much (they co-write, direct, produce), they made up a fake Editor, “Roderick Jaynes,” who was subsequently nominated for an Academy Award.

ll we think about is how to keep the audience engaged, and normally we’re big on plot because that’s the easy way to do it – Ethan Coen

• The plot is deliciously wicked, and hard-boiled blackmail is a major force. Think Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, Burn After Reading. • The key characters have a psycho quirk. Films like Millers Crossing and O Brother Where Art Thou showcase their love of such people. • You see many big close ups of the eyes, surreal dream sequences and characters with a fondness for repeating phrases. • The film is obviously shot on a low budget and has a simple storyline. The brothers almost never reshoot and rarely ever waste a shot that they have filmed. • The characters often have unusual hairstyles! The next time you watch a rerun of The Ladykillers, No Country For Old Men or Fargo, you’ll know. • You notice many scenes where phones are ringing and key plot twists happen inside hotel rooms. Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Fargo…the list goes on. • The music is by Carter Burwell, who some call “the third Coen brother.” Burwell has been part of their team since they made their first film, Blood Simple, in 1984.
