Joker

Release Date: October 02, 2019 Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller Language: English Director: Todd Phillips Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert de Niro, Zazie Beetz Studio: Warner Bros. Pic Courtesy: Warner Bros.

An original standalone origin story of the iconic villain not seen before on the big screen, it’s a gritty character study of Arthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society, and a broader cautionary tale. The film is set in Batman’s home city of Gotham in the 1980s, and based on a script penned by Phillips and Scott Silver (8 Mile).

decade after Heath Ledger’s award-winning turn as the maniacal villain in The Dark Knight, Joaquin Phoenix plays Joker, a solo feature intended to provide the character with a new cinematic origin story.

The Story

Joker traces how a man named Arthur Fleck goes from a failed stand-up comic to sociopathic criminal. A clown-forhire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night... but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society.

The Inspiration

Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 graphic novel ‘The Killing Joke’ is one of the primary inspirations for the film’s story. The comic, which is widely considered one of the greatest Joker stories ever told, featured a failed comedian who loses his wife and has his face disfigured during a botched robbery he undertakes in order to make ends meet.

Who is the Joker?

The Joker is more than just Batman’s most infamous enemy. He’s also one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic villains, with a long history of memorable portrayals on both the big screen and television.

The Lead Actor

Joaquin Phoenix is said to have delivered an unnerving and astonishing performance in the role of Joker. His efforts make him a strong contender for his fourth Oscar nomination — he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (Gladiator) and twice for Best Actor (Walk the Line,

The Master). If he wins, he’ll follow in the footsteps of Heath Ledger by winning an Academy Award for player the Joker. In fact, buzz on Phoenix’s performance has been intense since Joker had its world premier at the Venice Film Festival, where the movie took home the prestigious Golden Lion. Did You Know: Losing 52 pounds for the role, Phoenix modelled Fleck’s signature chuckle on videos he watched of people suffering from pathological laughter, a neurological disorder that makes individuals laugh uncontrollably.

The Veteran

Living legend Robert de Niro portrays Franklin, a talk show host who plays a key role in Arthur’s downfall.

Masters@Work Sci-fi’s greatest showman, James Cameron, moved on from the Terminator series in 1991, but now he’s reunited with his first great cinematic brand through Terminator: Dark Fate. Cameron is joined by the franchise’s two signature stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton. Let’s rewind to Cameron’s journey with the film:

How It All Began

In the early 1980s, Cameron wrote the script for The Terminator. Though production companies were interested, they were unwilling to let an inexperienced feature film director make the movie. Finally, Cameron found a company called Hemdale Pictures, which agreed to let him direct, but bought the screenplay for only one dollar. For the role of the Terminator, Cameron envisioned a man who was not exceptionally muscular, who could “blend into” a crowd. Then Arnold Schwarzenegger and Cameron met over lunch, and the rest, as they say, is history. Linda Hamilton first appeared in this film in her iconic role of Sarah Connor, and later married Cameron.

The Terminator was made on a budget of $6.5 million and the producers felt it would last no more than a week in theaters. However, The Terminator eventually earned over $78 million worldwide and launched James Cameron’s career.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

James Cameron Returns With

PVR MOVIES FIRST

Cameron came up with a core idea for the sequel and introduced many changes in it. The core cast remained the same, but Schwarzenegger returned as a protector. Unlike Schwarzenegger’s character—the T-800 Terminator which is made of a metal endoskeleton— the new villain of the sequel, called the T-1000, was a more advanced Terminator made of liquid metal, and with polymorphic abilities. It was also much less bulky than the T-800. PAGE 20

Cameron had originally wanted to incorporate this advancedmodel-Terminator into the first film, but the special effects at the time were not advanced enough. The ground-breaking effects used in The Abyss to digitally depict the water tentacle convinced Cameron that his liquid metal villain was now possible.

Terminator 2 broke box-office records and became the highest-grossing film of 1991. It won four Academy Awards: Best Makeup, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Visual Effects. It was also nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing. The two Cameron films propelled Schwarzenegger to the top ranks of Hollywood blockbuster stars and made his character one of the most unlikely entries on the list of truly iconic Hollywood screen characters. Cameron announced a third Terminator film many times during the 1990s, but without coming out with any finished scripts. Three more in the series were made without Cameron’s involvement: Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator: Salvation (2009) and Terminator Genisys (2017).

Terminator: Dark Fate

Set after 1992’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the film catches up with an older Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) as she teams up with a cyborg (Mackenzie Davis) to save a young woman from another Terminator. The film could launch a new trilogy if it performs well at the box office. “We rolled up our sleeves and started to break out the story ..there is a greater story to be told here,” says Cameron. “I haven’t seen action and emotion like this since the second movie. It feels new again,” says Arnold Schwarzenegger, who returns to the series as T-800 in Dark Fate. Early reports say that the gut-renching finale of this film made its first test audience cry. 7 Key Elements of Ang Lee Films: • Every one of his films is an adventure and a departure from his previous work. • Thematic links recur across the director’s work — family, repression, duty, thwarted love or desire. • Lee has real love for his characters, letting them surprise the audience with their very human, fallible side. • His war films offer a gritty, brutal, ground-level view. • He likes to treat action as drama—even his boxing scenes are like conversations, not physical fights. • His films have strong women characters. • He likes to tell his stories from different points of view. “That makes the story more real,” he is quoted as saying.
