Malaga Cove Celebrates July 4th

Independence Day • Annual community event takes place at the Peninsula’s historic local center.

By Asumi Shuda In 1962, Palos Verdes held its first Fourth of July community event at Malaga Cove school. 58 years later, the tradition continues.

From the Children’s Bike Parade to the Apple Pie Contest, this three-hour event has kept almost every aspect of its tradition alive.

Arriving in the early morning, onlookers could grab a bite to eat from the food stands operated by the local Boy Scouts, greet Uncle Sam and listen to or participate in the many activities being held at the center of Malaga Cove school’s field. In the back, refreshments and socialization take place with Palos Verdes’ senior citizens. Throughout the event, visitors listen to speeches from honoree guest speakers Gwynne Shotwell, Colonel Kevin H. Hutchinson of the U.S. Marine Corps and other renowned individuals.

The event was originated by Denise and Bryan Hardwick, a local couple, to celebrate America’s patriotism and freedoms. Thirty eight years down the line, Maxim McCormick has been involved with the event and continues to this day. As the former principal at Rolling

Gwynne Shotwell, president of Space X, was an honoree and guest speaker.

Hills Prep (which was formerly located where Malaga Cove school is today), McCormick recalls how his participation started.

“I remember my first day on the job when suddenly, all of these people started arriving to set up for this big event,” McCormick said. “At first I thought that this was strange, so I talked to some people then offered to join the event’s committee for a couple of years. I have been on ever since.”

Every Fourth of July, McCormick organizes different details of the event

based on his interests. Nevertheless, he never fails to write the prompt for the essay contest tailored to whomever the main speaker would be every year. The masters of ceremonies position does rotate within the committee members, and this year it was McCormick’s turn to host the occasion. Regardless, McCormick is an active participant in the running of this tradition and hopes to continue to do so.

Alongside McCormick, other individuals helped this event come alive.

Col. Hutchinson grew up on the Hill and, with 25 years of experience in the Marine Corps under his belt, decided to return to his original community and make a speech at this year’s event.

“I decided to speak this year because my stepfather and mother asked me to, and I agreed because of my love for this community and for this tradition,” Hutchinson said. “Ultimately, I spoke out of respect for my parents, as this was something minor that I could give back to them.”

Hutchinson’s family background did come into play in his joining in the Corps. His idolization of his maternal grandfather and his role in the Army as the Regimental Commander along with his great-uncle’s service and ultimate passing in the Marine Corps inspired his decision. After graduating from Pomona College, Hutchinson chose the Marine Corps, originally for four years, to which

“Along with my admiration for these men, I also joined due to my idealistic, patriotic, romantic outlook for the armed forces,” Hutchinson said. “I wanted to test myself to enter the most elite branch of the armed services, to see if I could do it.”

This Fourth of July, Hutchinson received the Donovan Black Military Service Award for his service with the armed forces. He then gave a speech about his experience with the Marine

Basketball Takes A Break At The Beach

The Palos Verdes Basketball Association’s spirit soared as players, coaches and families shared this day together on July 29 to celebrate the final day of the PVBA’s 31st summer youth basketball season.

Kayaking, snorkeling, bodysurfing playing in the tidepools, building sandcastles, burying each other in the sand were only some of the highlights of the PBVA “Spirit Day” held on a perfect Southern California summer’s day at the exclusive and breathtaking Portuguese Bend Beach Club.

Hosted by the PVBA as a free special spirit day event, the day’s activities included freshly made taco’s, way too much PVBA basketball cake and the great American tradition and a favorite of all players, siblings and grown-ups alike — S’mores made over an open flame.

The fun-filled day gave everyone an opportunity to come out, connect and reconnect with new and familiar faces as part of the 30,000 strong and grow-

ing PVBA community spanning over three decades and three generations.

For this event, players hung up their basketball uniforms for their beach gear and snorkels as this stood in for basketballs while different kinds of records were set like over 400 marshmallows roasted and inhaled by all who came out to enjoy this special day.

His words received a standing ovation and many handshakes and positive comments afterward. Now, he’s able to pass down the knowledge he gained from his experience.

“I would advise [prospectives] to keep an open mind, as I remember having stereotypical views of the Marine Corps in the beginning, and these beliefs turned completely erroneous,” Hutchinson said. “The Marine Corps wants its soldiers to think critically, take initiative, be creative, innovative, adaptive.”

From Hutchinson to McCormick, civic awards to apple pie contests, An Old-Fashioned 4th of July is a community event that brings Palos Verdes’ locals of all ages together to cherish the independence of America. No matter how much the world has changed in 58 years, and many more years down the line, this timeless occasion will be here to stay.

Meet The Neighbors And Their Opinions Social Media Over the summer Panorama staff members have been lurking and following various social media platforms.

Generation Z - which has been taught how to use the internet beginning at a very young age, has a few observations on social media and its users.

First up - the Nextdoor App.

By Sarah Liu The Palos Verdes Peninsula has its social epicenters: any of the three Starbucks are crowded nearly every day, gym locker rooms are loud with conversations, and Golden Cove is crowded with restaurants.

These local meeting spots are a testament to the tight-knit community on the Hill, but it would be naïve to turn a blind eye to the virtual community that has incubated within Peninsula neighbor-

hoods on Nextdoor.

Nextdoor prides itself on being “the world’s largest social network for the neighborhood.” Existing as both an app and as a website, the company aims to “enable truly local conversations that empower neighbors to build stronger and safer communities.”

As all mission statements do, the basis of Nextdoor relies on a utopian community. However, the quality of these conversations deserves to be dissected.

Coming from Rolling Hills Estates was a post garnering 314 responses asking about how one should go about to keep the homeless away from private commercial property.

Some responders gave suggestions,

such as supporting the development of homeless shelters and resource centers. Other users had less than dehumanizing things

to say.

Replies such as “How about a remotecontrol air horn, sprinklers, strobe lights, a flea infestation, or, if it’s not retail, some pitbulls?” These replies earned what would be the equivalent of 11 “likes” in the form of a smiling face.

One user from the neighborhood of “Friendship Park” attributed the homeless crisis to childhood exposure to television and radio, technology and, among other things, single-parent families, asserting that “if we continue to encourage single parent homes, our society will continue to deteriorate.”

Another stated that they had “no compassion for strung-out drug addicts that are ruining peoples [sic] neighborhoods.”

A benefit of Nextdoor is that it is a virtual vessel for discussion. In theory, a user has the time to think out what they are about to post, to do the proper research and write coherently.

Nextdoor’s flaw is that it houses humans that cannot be bound to theory. If the internet is synonymous with speed, fear-led reaction has then found its home. Most people don’t go to Nextdoor looking to respectfully hear the perspectives of others, but rather for validation their own beliefs.

Nextdoor has tried to foster a helpful environment with its Community Guide-

lines, which include vague wishes, such as “be helpful, not hurtful,” and “don’t use Nextdoor as a soapbox.”

In a post titled, “AB392. Time to take matters in our own hands and take back CA,” a user attempted to summarize a California Assembly bill that sets forth specific rules for justifiable homicide by police officers by employing sweeping generalizations all too common and unproductive in current political discourse.

Responses to the post ranged from reactionary comments, such as “This is what happens when all the [politically-correct] aholes [sic] are in office,” to people asking their peers to read the bill for themselves before drawing their own conclusions.

One user shared that she believed

questions: Have you heard of Nextdoor; do you have an account? Survey questions were as follows: If you have an account, how would you describe the environment; if you have used Nextdoor, what was your purpose for joining the site?

Out of 125 high schoolers surveyed on the Peninsula, 65 percent had heard of Nextdoor. Although the vast majority did not have their own accounts, that did not stop students from expressing their opinions of the service.

Around one half of the responses from the social media survey said they understood the mission of Nextdoor, saying that Nextdoor was helpful, friendly and an easy resource for reselling various items, with one stating that her family uses the app to find lost animals.

Conversely, others called the platform “cancerous,” “judgmental” and

that Nextdoor should be kept free of political discussion, thereby contradicting Nextdoor’s ultimate goal of enabling productive conversation.

While individuals can report posts that go against these guidelines, Nextdoor also relies on “Neighborhood Leads,” or certain individuals that can vote to remove reported content or close discussions in their neighborhood. The efficacy of this system to keep Nextdoor civil remains to be seen.

In one neighborhood of more than 2,000 people, there is only one Neighborhood Lead. Even identifying who a Neighborhood Lead is, is not easily visible or accessible on the site.

A poll and corresponding survey was conducted on Instagram for 24 hours.

“combative.” One said she looked on the app through her parent’s account just to see people complain.

The design of Nextdoor is messy: There is no way to easily follow the flow of responses such as a reply thread would, which only empowers users to pop off at the mouth without consequence.

When the internet was first introduced, there was a universal list of rules to follow: Only follow people that you know; don’t talk to strangers online.

Through Nextdoor, the teacher has not become the student, but has rather gutted the curriculum in exchange for the allure of the uncivilized atmosphere that Nextdoor was hoping to prevent, but provides.

By Amanda Kalaydjian Everyone knows that spaghetti is a classic dish with Italian roots. It graces the dinner table of many American homes and leaves people with full bellies and happy smiles.

I’m a member of Girl Scout Troop #12345, aka “Shark Bait” and we wanted to use this Italian food connection to our advantage. If it wanted to turn our dream of trekking through the Italian Dolomites in July into reality, the we would have to raise money.

From Senior To Freshman Everywhere: "You’ll Be Fine" Senior Wisdom

• High school begins with another round of expecations.

By Kristen Lu This is a letter from a senior who thinks she has a few things to say about her three-year high school experience.

There are some top-level pieces of knowledge that are helpful for freshman, including the generic, “You’re not that cool, so don’t try to be” and the “Enjoy freshman year while you can”.

Anyone can tell you the aforementioned. But, with my three years of high school to scrutinize, the primary piece of information I can offer is to adopt a realistic, healthy mindset in your approach to the four years ahead. Now the term “realistic, healthy mindset” is pretty nebulous, and, until now, a piece of advice that likely nobody ever told you exactly how or why to adhere to.

The seemingly unshakable proclivity for nearly everyone on the Hill to place intense value on academic achievement is almost the polar opposite of this sort of mindset I’m suggesting you adopt. I think as a freshman I always knew that this mindset was in a repressed part of my consciousness, but refused to acknowledge it, until it was too deep-seated to remove.

For years, I meticulously planned my entire existence so that I could appear to be a “competitive” applicant to some ancient, ivy-studded institution. I was utterly annoying about it, too - in seventh grade, I wore a Harvard sweatshirt almost every other day.

I’m still not sure how I made it out of middle school without enduring some intense bullying. I held myself to such a high standard that every inevitable rejection and shortcoming became extremely painful.

The time I spent in Algebra 2 Honors sophomore year was probably one of the most trying times of my life, because I failed to meet every expectation I had, while simultaneously getting rejected from six consecutive leadership positions.

Contrary to popular belief, putting time and effort into high school is mutually exclusive with this way of thinking, and the rest of your life isn’t contingent on one test grade. It’s - sorry to say - farfetched to expect to do perfectly on every test and achieve competitive success in every extracurricular activity you participate in, and it’s unrealistic to strive for such.

It’s also self-defeating. Psychologically, being motivated by some sort of extrinsic gain, like an ‘A’ or a trophy, to reach a goal, such as a college, as op-

posed to just pure desire from within makes everything more unenjoyable.

It’s not to say that those aren’t good goals, but being motivated purely by those can only be counterproductive. All of the energy you expend to attain something because in your subconscious you believe the rest of your life depends on it just adds a prodigious level of unnecessary anxiety.

The competitive success I attained in speech and debate skyrocketed when I tried to compete because I just liked the activity, not because I wanted to win so that I could add something to my resume.

School and extracurriculars aren’t chores or items on a list to complete.

They’re opportunities to further your interest in areas that you are passionate about, so treat them as such.

The most opportune time to switch from the mindset your seventh-grade overachiever self decided to adopt is now because it dramatically reduces the time you’ll spend moping about being one point away from getting an ‘A’ on that quiz.

Remember, you will do well in all of your future endeavors in spite of the grade you got in your first semester World History AP class. I promise.

Local Scout Troop Treks Through Italian Dolomites

. . . Continued from Page 7 support their local Girl Scout Troop’s mission to go backpacking in Italy by simply dining on spaghetti, they smiled. People admired that a Girl Scout Troop was striving toward an astonishing goal.

Once we had enough money to get us there, we focused on training.

Backpacking in the mountains for six days straight is no easy feat, so we had smaller backpacking trips to prepare our minds and bodies for the journey ahead.

It was the way television shows have multiple episodes leading up to the season finale. But our closing episode was one that would change our lives.

Trust me when I say I’m not being melodramatic. Our backpacking trip in the Dolomites is now a memory that we will never forget. The Dolomites are a UNESCO world heritage site and for good reason.

Even though we were only teenagers, we know this trip allowed us to experience one of the most beautiful places we will ever view in our lifetimes. Living in

the greater Los Angeles Area, our days to are filled with noise pollution, less than clean drinking water, and a permanent layer of smog.

But in the Dolomites we were free to experience nature in its pure form. At one moment in the day our ankles would be tickled by flowers in meadows that we had never even seen before.

Next day we were throwing snow balls in July or standing on mountain tops (one of which had an elevation of 9,028 feet).

Journeying through forests allowed us to understand what it was truly like to be surrounded by nature. Gazing at glimmering turquoise lakes had us smiling, not only at the scenery before us but at each other.

One of the most important parts of our trip was that, together, we were Girl Scouts. As someone with no biological siblings, I felt a warm bond of sisterhood and friendship on the trip.

Even when we were fatigued from hours of backpacking, we could laugh and goof around. When we were supposed to be sleeping at night, quiet conversation and giggles filled the room.

Despite all of our training, there were moments toward the end when I wasn’t sure that I would be able to complete the trek. To dispel these feelings, all I had to do was look around me at my fellow Scouts.

We had gone across the world together, hiked mountains together and laughed through it all, together. Since we had accomplished what we did, I know we could do anything.

All-Stars Take Over Summer

Baseball

• All four Peninsula Little Leagues fielded teams to compete in the District 36 All-Star tournament this summer.

Peninsula teams faced All-Star teams from Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and El Segundo Little Leagues.

Like last summer Palos Verdes Little League played host to the 11-year-old tournament where El Segundo defeated Redondo Beach in the championship game.

The Lunada Bay 10-year-old All-Star team went the furthest of all Peninsula teams, losing to the championship team from El Segundo in the semifinal rounds at Perry Park in Redondo Beach.

Manhattan Beach Little League defeated El Segundo to win the 12-yearold District 36 championship.

All-Star team went the furthest of all the All-Star teams on the Peninsula losing to eventual District champion El Segundo in the semifinals played at Perry Park in Redondo Beach.

but we’ll take a short break and come back for tryouts in January.
