• Spirits are high this holiday season as students come together for annual event with Willenberg students.

By Nina Li At Peninsula High School, the cheer was overwhelming as the Willenberg students arrived on campus for the annual Special Education event at which Peninsula students perform and join in activities with the Willenberg students.

This year, more than 100 students participated in Willenberg, event, including students from Peninsula and Palos Verdes High Schools’ Skills for Independence classes.

“Willenberg was even more fun and exciting this year, since I was able to be an elf buddy,” said Emily Wang. “It is honestly such an amazing and wholesome event to be a part of. It really gets me in the holiday spirit.

“My buddy Ethan was so awesome, and I just had the best time. This was actually my first year being in Willenberg, and I am so happy I got to experience

it because it is also my last year at Pen, Wang said. “It was definitely one for the books and something I will always remember, especially for my senior year.”

When the students arrived, two students from Peninsula, known as elves, were paired with a student from Willenberg and given a brown bag of activities to complete together.

Service Learning Leadership’s Willenberg Committee was in charge of coming up with the activities and making sure that every group had enough of all the materials to complete the activities.

The committee included Anne Lee, Makenna Murphy, Elizabeth Ozawa, Alicia Carbona, Abby Robinson and Amanda Traywick.

Service Learning Leadership also collaborated with Associated Student Body’s Willenberg Committee.

This committee includes Emily Wang, Maddie Chun, Victoria Mansukhani, Megan Hwang, Julia Kahen, Rhys Hershberger and Diego Sheng.

Habitat Club Makes A Community Difference Service

• Local students make a positive difference through Habitat for Humanity.

By Nina Li Habitat for Humanity was established in 1976 as a nonprofit organization that provides homes for families around the world.

At Peninsula High School, students in the PVPHS Habitat for Humanity Club and others participate in the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles to work with professional construction crew members to create homes for families in need.

The club at Peninsula is advised by Mike Spalding. The board members include President Robert Peltekov, Vice President James Maeder, Secretary Lauren Kim, Treasurer Joseph Abboud and Historian Katie Seaton.

Spalding has been working with Habitat for Humanity for about seven years. He got involved through his church, St. Francis Episcopal Church Palos Verdes. He was asked to organize a build day for the church and has

PEN Choir Peaks For Annual Holiday Show Choir

• Months of rehearsal leads to annual winter concert for Peninsula High students.

By Nina Li Peninsula High student performers prepared for the spirited holiday season with a lot of spirited work.

The school’s choir prepared for its annual winter concert, “Sounds of the Season,” with months of practice.

The Christmas shows last week showcased all levels of the choir, from freshman to seniors, who practiced most of the songs they sang in Choir Director Dan Doctor’s room.

They rehearsed with a pianist two times a week. However, most of the time the students were expected to take their music home and practice individually to save time plunking notes at school. In addition to their class period schedule, they also hold lunch time rehearsals for their chamber choir.

Amanda Traywick moved to Peninsula just last year, but has been in choir for five years before.

“Choir is just a wonderful experience to meet people and enjoy time dedicated to making music,” Traywick said.

“All the awesome people you meet and the experience of being on stage with a group of really talented people is wonderful,” she said. “All members of choir are very appreciative of the bonds that they have formed with one another.”

Senior Carla Sudo has been in choir her whole high school career.

“Joining choir made me realize and appreciate the role music plays in me personally and professionally,” Sudo said. “I have met so many great people , thanks to the choir program, and we have grown together to make tons of unforgettable memories.”

Choir also exposes students to different cultures through their songs from across the nation.

The firemen thanked the assembled students and parents for their generosity, and the school community expressed its appreciation to the firefighters for their work during the recent fires.

“I have only really been involved with the Habitat for Humanity group for a year,” Seaton said. “Last year I did my first build day and absolutely fell in love with it. It is so awesome being able to see the Panthers community come together and help out a family is such an amazing way. Also, on site, we are able to either meet the family we are helping or read an ‘About The

Family’ paper. It is super cool to see how you are helping out a family.”

Club President Peltekov has been involved with the club since the start of his junior year. His duties include making sure all the requirements necessary to maintain a club at Peninsula are fulfilled.

Peltekov teaches members about the ideas and goals of Habitat for Humanity. He helps the club raise funds ahead of time to be able to donate to Habitat for Humanity once they arrive at the build location.

“My favorite part of the build days

is just that we get to do something to actually make a difference,” Peltekov said. “You get to meet some members of the family that will be living in the house, and it is the coolest thing ever to see that you can actually help make a difference.”

The next build day is on Saturday, March 16, of the new year. Students who wish to help build simple, decent and affordable housing for low income families can see Spalding or any club board members.

“This was my first time being an elf for Willenberg and it was one of the best events I have ever participated in,”

When their performance was over, all of the elves and their buddies had a dance party and played basketball in the gym. The fun did not stop there, however.

Once finished, the whole school packed into the gym to watch performances put on by Willenberg that showcased singing and dancing.

“My favorite part was arguably the dances,” Wang said.

“Every year, it is something different,

Learning Leadership teacher.

“They are so warm and truly love what they do. They work really hard to give the Willenberg students unique and meaningful experiences and opportunities. I really enjoy talking with them and learning from them,” she said.

“I think both of our schools have grown in various ways because all of the teachers are so interested in learning from/with each other.”

Myrick said that one the teachers at Willenberg, who is now the assistant principal, has her own children who are Peninsula alumni, and one is an SLL alumnus, so we have gotten to know each other well over the years and I think it has made our schools even more connected.

The event has been going on for more than 30 years, but each year is different, with new activities and new people contributing to the festivities.

“It would be hard to do, but it always feels like I want to do more with Willenberg,” Myrick said. “It would be fun to have a spring event or another day where we get together. There is always so much going on, so I will continue to treasure our holiday exchange, but it would be fun to continue working closely together.”

STEM Expands PV Basketball Ready For The Competition Student Vision Girls Basketball STEM • High school STEM students are excited to share science and technology knowledge.

By Nina Li As Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs become more prominent in schools across the nation, the demographic of students learning these fields has expanded to include elementary schools as well.

Robotics FRC team members are helping spread STEM concepts to these children. Recently, they hosted

an after-school STEM camp where students from second and fifth grades learned about STEM through several projects that all had STEM related aspects.

The team prepared four projects: balsa wood gliders, straw structures, paper airplanes and mousetrap cars.

Each project went under three different themes of aerodynamics: structure, stability and simple machines.

After completing the projects, they held competitions for everything the students had built.

• Sea Kings move up a division and will face tougher competition than last season.

By Sarah Liu The girl’s varsity basketball team at Palos Verdes High has an 8-4 record so far this year and is tied for 16th place in the 2A Division in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section.

The team moved up to the tougher 2A Division from 3AA Division it played in last year “I think that the team will continue to get better and grow,“ said senior and captain Djae Berberabe. “However,” she said, “as we go further into the season… the competition will get harder, but I think we will still be able to make it to CIF playoffs.”

One of the biggest strengths and weaknesses is the number of new faces on the team this year. The team lost five seniors from last year, with four of the

five being starting players who played a prominent role on the team. In addition, the team has a new assistant coach, Rico Emnace, who players say has helped the team improve on both defense and offense.

“This year we have some inexperienced varsity players who are slowly coming along and always asking for help because they want to play their best,” said senior and co-captain Ebun Kalejaiye. “It is a lot of teaching, but it really puts seniors in the leadership position one would expect.”

Berberabe added that the team has had to deal with adversity on the court.

“Losing the seniors has affected us because we dropped in height and have been struggling to get back into the flow with a different starting lineup,” Berberabe said.

However, the team has put an emphasis on building team chemistry, using team dinners to increase the time they spend together to form stronger

Sea King Pitcher Set For Goodwill Games Baseball

Senior Palos Verdes High School pitcher Joshua LaPine has been selected to play on the American team in the International Goodwill Games in Auckland, New Zealand and Adelaide, Australia.

The series of games includes two all-star high school teams from Japan and Brisbane, Australia. West Los Angeles College coach and previous PVHS head coach Murphy Su’a will be part of the American coaching staff.

“We are excited to have Joshua LaPine on our 2018 Goodwill Series baseball tour,” said Su’a.

The American team will have players from Connecticut, Philadelphia, Wisconsin and Texas in addition to California.

“Competition will be stiff against the Australians and more so when we play New Zealand’s national development team and Japan’s All-Star teams in Brisbane. It will have an Olympics & World Baseball Classic feel,” said Su’a.

Josh comes from a tremendous baseball program at Palos Verdes High School and looking for him to log innings for us on the mound and run balls down in the outfield,” Su’a said.

The Goodwill Series, which will begin on Dec. 20 and run for two weeks, is an international baseball series for players who are between 14 and 18 years old. Players are selected based on recommendations from former players, coaches and professional scouts.

PEN Baseball Pitches Holiday Spirit For Community The Peninsula High baseball team held a Christmas tree fundraiser in October. The team sold Christmas trees, poinsettias and wreaths, by preorder, to the community.

At Peninsula High last week, all the team members were there to help people pick trees and carry them away. The Panther cheer squad helped by carrying the wreaths and plants to buyers’ cars as well.

All the money raised will go to the

baseball team for new sheds, equipment, batting cages, and a windshield.

Team members also sold candy, ornaments, and baked goods for the Brett Mendoza Scholarship.

All earnings from that will go to a senior baseball player who will attend LMU, Mendoza’s old school. Coach Mendoza’s sister was at the sale to support the team.

Continued from Page 7 the camp. “Some of them had no background in STEM and others were very knowledgeable, but I am glad that so many of them enjoyed the camp, regardless of how much they knew prior, said Eng. “I had such a great time teaching them, and I thought it was a really worthwhile experience to help students see what engineering could do.”

Eng has been a part of STEM programs, such as Cyber Patriots and Robotics, since she was a freshman at Peninsula High.

“STEM is important for our society to move forward and discover new ways of thinking,” Eng said. “There is so much that we can do to improve our lives and the lives of future generations if we keep developing ourselves and the way we think about the world through engineering.

“STEM is going to take us from the deepest oceans to starry skies and everywhere in between. Along the way, I hope that the world will be able to work together to come up to solutions to core problems like global warming,” she said.

Not only is the STEM fields expanding to people of all ages, it is also growing among girls.

“I think it is particularly important for historical minorities to be repre-

sented in STEM so that way the diversity of our ideas increases, which is why I am thrilled to be a woman leader in STEM,” Eng said.

“I have been trying to make sure that there are opportunities for women in STEM to be heard. I am going to be organizing a women in tech conference later this year.”

President of the team, Olivia Bradley, has been in robotics since her freshman year, but has been taking STEM classes since 6th grade.

As president, she works closely with the team to ensure the team runs efficiently and completes its goals.

She communicates with the leaders, mentors and team members to see what work is getting done, what needs to be done and conveys the information to the necessary people.

This includes everything from designing, manufacturing and programming robots to monitoring safety, preparing us for competition and assisting in business projects such as marketing, fundraising and outreach.

“STEM is important because it is present in every part of our lives,” Bradley said. “Science is everywhere in the world around us, manufacturing, food production, health care and more all rely on science, technology, engineering, and math.”

Braces Fit Any Mouth At Any Age Braces

By Timothy Niemann About 75 percent of today’s teenagers will be fitted braces, a practice

of straightening teeth that dates back to the ancient Egyptians who used wet reeds.

Dr. John H. Trotter, a local orthodontist, has put braces on children as young as six years old and men as old as 89, although a majority of people get braces between the ages of 11 and 13.

Dr. Trotter puts new braces on about 200-250 children a year, which calculates to about 5,700 brackets (a small part glued onto each individual tooth) a year.

With braces, children must take extra

good care of their teeth. New technology, which includes electronic toothbrushes, makes it easier for kids to keep their teeth it tip-top shape.

Dr. Trotter says that visual aids and better instructions make it easier for children to maintain healthy teeth, although all orthodontists struggle with helping kids take care of their teeth.

Technology has affected braces in a big way. “Innovations in technology are continuing to have a dramatic affect in helping orthodontists provide better care to their patients,” Dr. Trotter said.

Some of the new technology includes clear aligned therapy, computer aided designs of wires and brackets and 3D imaging of the mouth.

As Dr. Trotter has been doing this for many years, he has seen some crazy things. “I had a patient who lost his retainer in the middle of a roller coaster loop,” Dr. Trotter said. He also had a kid whose braces got stuck on the basketball net when he was dunking the ball.

Fall Soccer Season Ends On Perfect Day AYSO • The 2018 fall soccer came to a end last weekend at the annual King & Queen of the Hill tournament during a perfect day at Ladera Linda Fields.

The all-day tournament included a number of surprise finishes including Argentina taking the boys’ 14U championship and Manchester United winning the boys’ 12U crown.

The boys’ 9U Raptors, boys’ 12U Napoli and girls’ 14U Avalanche played great during the playoffs to reach the finals.

In the most exciting match of the day the Red Dragons won the girls’ 11U Queen of the Hill in overtime.

Basketball Opens Winter Sports . . . First grade basketball takes over the Peninsula High Field House on Opening Day for PVYBL

Basketball Takes Control Of Winter Winter Sports • The Palos Verdes Basketball Association and the newly formed Palos Verdes Youth Basketball League have opened the winter sports season.

All four Peninsula gyms will be active this winter with two youth basketball leagues plus high school and middle school events taking place.

The old Big Daddy Nikon camera guy and the rest of the Panorama staff are going on a short winter break and will be back with the next edition of Panorama on Jan. 19, 2019.

In the meantime, Panorama People will be recording several new podcasts and will produce another King & Queen of the Hill rapid-fire drum video.

Also, the old Panorama camera guy is getting a new back brace and kneepads and will be out shooting lots and lots of basketball - boys and girls, kindergarten through high school varsity!

Choir Sings Holiday Songs

. . . Continued from Page 5 “My favorite part about choir is being able to sing in different languages,” Women’s Treble Choir member Nicole Tam said.

“Sometimes we think we can only sing in the language we speak but music is never limited like that. Singing in different languages exposes me to culture and history, something you would have never thought about,” Tam said.

“Personally my favorite is singing African tribal music because the energy, the message behind the lyrics, and the way the different language rolls off my tongue is galvanizing. That has been my favorite thing through the three years of singing in choir,” Tam said.

Holiday Colors On Ice . . . The Promenade Ice Chalet kicked off the holiday season with its annual “Christmas Spectacular” ice show.
