First Graduates

First 8th Grade Glass For Peninsula Heritage . . . The 2016 graduating 8th grade class will forever be remembered at Peninsula Heritage School.

• Peninsula Heritage School achieved a milestone to finish the academic school year with its first-ever 8th grade graduation class.

The individual students were the focus of this program, attended by parents, extended families, faculty, administration and friends of the school.

The event was held in St. Luke’s

Presbyterian Church, across Rolling Hills Road from the school.

“PHS has given me the time I needed to mature academically and emotionally,” one graduate recalled.

“I used to downplay my talents, but now I am proud of my abilities.”

Summer Upgrades On The Peninsula Changes

The Flag Flies Tall . . . Palos Verdes Little League installed a new flag pole in time for hosting the Disctirct 36 11-year-old All-Star tournament.

• The Peninsula has been busing this spring and summer installing new things and fixing old ones.

Peninsula High installed a new running track that will be used by students and the community for years to come.

Future upgrades for the Panthers includes the baseball and softball fields and hopefully soon - the student parking lot.

Note: the Peninsula High football/ soccer/lacrosse field looks and feels great. Nothing better than playing and competing on natural grass.

Palos Verdes Little League also installed a new flag pole, while the new managers at the ice rink are in the process of installing a fresh layer of ice.

Peninsula Center continues to go through its massive remodel with new restaurants and stores moving in.

Just In Time For Summer . . . The local ice rink that has been on the

Peninsula since the 1980’s is getting a new sheet of ice and other improvements from its new management - Ice Ameria. The rink should reopen in a matter of days.

A New Fast Track For The Cats . . . Peninsula High got rid of its black and worn out track surface and replaced it with a new state-of-the-art eight-lane track that looks and feels faster than anything in the South Bay.

Library Getting Ready For Local Art Show Scholarship Palos Verdes Library District is accepting entries for its annual community art show at the Peninsula Center main library. The library will begin accepting applications starting August 15.

Local artists or art students looking for a chance to exhibit their work to a wide audience should apply.

PVLD hosts the annual community art show at the Peninsula Center Library and is open to all artists.

Work in all media is eligible, such as painting, photography, mixed media and sculpture. To enter, visit www.pvld. org/artinourlibrary and fill out the online application or pick up an entry

form at the Peninsula Center Library.

The deadline for submissions is September 30.

Entry fee is $30 to submit up to three pieces. High School students and younger the entry fee is $5.

Winners of the art show will recieve cash prizes.

First: $200, Second: $100, Third: $50, and Honorable Mention categories. A Popular Vote will also take place with a special prize.

Opening reception for the event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Peninsula Graduate Named Milken Scholar Scholarship Recent Peninsula High graduate Ruwanthi (Ru) Ekanayake has been selected as one of 15 exceptional Los Angeles-area high school seniors as a 2016 Milken Scholar.

The Milken Scholars is a joint initiative of the Milken Institute and the Milken Family Foundation. Scholars receive a $10,000 scholarship and access to a lifetime of resources provided to scholarship recipients.

Ru, who will attend Cornell University, started writing poetry at the age of five. She published a book of humorous poems for children called “A Bag Full of Everything” and reads it aloud at pediatric hospitals, taking joy in watching young patients laugh at the silly rhymes and pictures.

Ru won a National Young Arts award for creative nonfiction, was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and received a National Merit Award.

She is also a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo and an accomplished pianist.

An aspiring neurosurgeon who has done research in a memory lab at UCLA, Ru has won several awards in behavioral sciences at the California State Science Fair, as well as the Amer-

Ruwanthi (Ru) Ekanayake ican Psychological Association Award and the U.S. Naval Research Award at the Los Angeles County Science Fair.

She has participated in the Palos Verdes Peninsula 4-H Club for nine years, serving as its president, winning numerous public speaking competitions, and running public speaking clinics and leadership conferences for younger members.

As a 4-H National Healthy Living Ambassador, Ru developed an educational comic with the Centers for Disease Control, teamed with the television show “The Biggest Loser” to fight childhood obesity, launched a national health blog and created a nine-county Southern California Healthy Living Summit.

Ru will study global health and biology at Cornell and plans a career in medicine.

"Spamalot" Highlights PEN High Summer

Summer Shows

Palos Verdes Peninsula High School Drama Boosters will present performances of the Tony Award-winning musical comedy Monty Python’s Spamalot tonight, July 28, 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. and on July 24 and July 31 at 2 p.m. at the school’s Performing Arts Center.

Tickets are $13 for students and $15 for adults, and can be reserved by emailing pendramaboosters@gmail. com, or at the door starting one hour before each show.

Set in England during the time of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, the laugh-a-minute Spamalot is adapted (with book and lyrics by Monty Python alum Eric Idle, and with music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle) from the classic comedic film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

When King Arthur and his band of misfit knights receive a heavenly instruction to find the Holy Grail, their adventures take them to lands where they meet flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits, the Laker Girls and (of course) flying cows!

Songs include the classic “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”.

Spamalot “raises silliness to an art form!” (NY Sunday Times).

The cast includes Michael Ticknor as King Arthur, Olufemi Oduntan as

the Lady of the Lake, Peter Kuyper as Sir Lancelot, Noah Shafer as Sir Galahad, Thomas Applewhite as Sir Robin, Ryan McGowan as Patsy and Julia Warrick as the Historian.

The cast is rounded out with Charlize Boushehri, Holden Dahlerbruch, Rafael Dedios, Rachel Edelstein, Tori Jones, Ruby Hirsch, Taylor Kirk, Ley’ah McClain, Elissa Luce, Ava Musick, Madeline Ness, Sophia Molino, Elizabeth Ozawa and Sarah Snow.

“It’s going to be a really fun show.

If you enjoy the comedy of Monty Python and musical theater, then you’ll probably enjoy this show too,” said Seth Cohen, Peninsula High school director and drama teacher.

The Peninsula High School Boosters supports the school’s drama department, which offers a four-year theater curriculum and five main stage productions per year.

The drama department oversees the student-run Drama Club which provides numerous additional performance opportunities, including the annual Student Production and a Comedy Sportz High School League team (competitive improv).

The drama department is affiliated with the International Thespian Society, the only national honors organization for high school theater students.

Fresh Ice Arrives Just In Time For Summer Skating Renovations

The Promenade Ice Chalet renovation has been a tremendous success under the guidnece of Ice-America, the ice rink’s new management company The Promenade Ice Chalet has been undergoing many improvements, including work on the ice floor, ice painting, Zamboni repairs, refrigeration repairs and more.

To accomplish the renovations the facility has been closed since June.

The ice rink is scheduled to re-open soon, with figure skating, hockey and learn to skate programs set recommence the week of July 25th.

Watch for more to come including

special events, family skating nights, teen skate nights, group activities, a holiday recital, winter camps and much more.

The long-time local ice rink, formerly known as Palos Verdes Ice Chalet, has been a local favorite since the early 1980’s and a launch pad for many notable Olympic figure skaters and NHL hockey professionals.

As PV Ice Chalet provided the introduction for many world-renowned professionals, Promenade on Ice’s mission is to offer the same quality initiation and instruction to the future skaters and players of America.

This past weekend, a local girls 16 and under softball team won the Southern California State Championship held in Lancaster.

These girls are from Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Hawthorne, Manhattan Beach and El Segundo. This follows a local District Championship win in Long Beach in June.

With a thrilling come from behind win in the bottom of the seventh inning, South Bay Pride beat a strong team from Downey, 20-19, in a slugfest that included three home runs from Pride power hitters Malia Clagg and Angie Vargas.

The Pride powerhouse now advances to the U.S. Western National tournament in Salinas next month.

• The Palos Verdes Peninsula girls’ fast-pitch softball league is having another outstanding All-Star summer season.

The 8U, 10U and 12U Gold teams all participated in the Southern California ASA District Tournament in San Pedro June 17-19.

All three teams had good showings in the tournament.

The PV 10U and 12U teams had good runs through the District Tournament, and both came close to winning it all. 12U came in 4th place and 10U came in second after falling in the Championship game.

Both 10U and 12U finished the tournament strong enough to qualify for the ASA State Tournament that took place over the July 4th weekend in Lancaster.

Once again both teams played well at the State Tournament.

In one of the the most exciting games played by the 10U team, the PV girls came back from a four run deficit in the bottom of the last inning to win the game with a walk off walk.

With their performance, the 10U team has qualified and will participate in the Regional Tournament at the California State Games in San Diego.

The opening ceremonies for the California State Games will take place in Qualcomm Stadium, home of the San Diego Chargers. ­— email reports

All-Star Banner Flies At Rolling Hills . . . Rolling Hills Little League will open the 2017 spring baseball season with a Disctric 36 championship banner. The RHLL

Peninsula Pony Fall League

Peninsula Pony/Colt Leagues Inc. is pleased to announce its 22nd season of Fall Baseball. The primary purpose is to offer baseball for those players who desire to continue to improve their baseball skills during the “off-season”. As you are aware, baseball perhaps more than most sports, requires continuous practice in order to produce refined skills. This program offers a tremendous opportunity to those players just entering the Pony Program for the first time as well as last year’s returning youth who desire to sharpen their skills and stay in shape.

Our Fall League is both competitive and instructional in nature and our coaching staff will focus on training and improving the player’s skill levels. Players will receive quality instruction that is equal to or better than Club Teams without the necessity of travel. ATTENDANCE OF PLAYERS AT ALL GAMES IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. We anticipate a very successful season. Games will be played Sundays at George Allen field with at least one weekly practice. Players will be next season’s 12, 13 and 14 year olds, however anyone who played in our Spring program is eligible. Each team will consist of 10 to 13 players. All players residing in Silver Spur, Rolling Hills, Lunada Bay & Palos Verdes Little League boundaries, as well as Lomita, Wilmington, San Pedro, Torrance, and Redondo Beach are welcome. Game times are 12:00 and 3:00 until Daylight Savings Time ends when they will be played at 11:00 and 2:00.

The season begins on Sunday, September 18th and runs through Sunday, November 20th* There are no make-up games.

Registration is limited due to growing popularity of this program.

Please register early to avoid disappointment.

Registrations received after the deadline cannot be guaranteed acceptance.

All-Star competition, the Palos Verdes Little League team of 11-year-olds battled back to get wins over Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach Little Leagues before falling to Rolling Hills in the championship game. If the Rolling Hills boys should win the Subdivision 3 tournament, they will play in the Division 3 Championship tournament next week and then perhaps move on to the California State Little League championships, usually played in Bakersfield.

Also in local All-Star action, the Palos Verdes Little League 11-12 yearold team got the furthest of the local leagues in District 36 upper division action, but lost to tournament host El Segundo Little League in the semis.

A talented Redondo Beach Little League team defeated El Segundo to win the 12-year-old District championship.

League, plays catcher and third base for the Batbusters. Next up for this team will be competing at the Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) National Championships beginning July 31 in Huntington Beach, where the team won the 12U Division in 2015.

PV United Enjoys A Hawaiian Summer Summer Fun • The girls’ U12 AYSO Select PV United traveled to the Hawaiian Islands for memorable summer tournament.

AYSO Select PV United planned for years for their hui (team) to go to the Hawaiian islands. They raised money with their le hua (beloved friends) of the PV Heat.

Finally, the day arrived and they went “wheels up” to Oahu. After several wonderful days of shark caging, hiking, snorkeling, body surfing with turtles in the moana (ocean), parasailing and a luau, the hui was ready to put the kinipopo (ball) in the back of the net.

They met their Hawaiian host team and exchanged makanas (gifts). With the island gods smiling on the wahine (girls), they donned their mainland jerseys and played the great game they know.

In their first game they took on the hometown favorite Honolulu and combined for a 6-0 victory and a show of Hau ‘oli (happy) smiles.

Next they found themselves in an island street hakaka (fight) with a Mililani team headed by a wikiwiki striker who put several shots off the crossbar and upright. But PV United stood strong like a pohaku (rock). The contest

ended 1-1.

The Hawaiian Malihini (newcomers) were feeling like a fortunate niu (coconut) having escaped a harvesters machete.

The mainland Ku‘uipos (sweethearts) focused on more important things, such as heading back to the pool and the beach.

The Makuas (parents) on the other hand, thirsty after their great efforts on the field, headed back to rehydrate for tomorrow’s games.

The next day arrived with PV United ready to leave it all on the beach in the head to head battle against a scrappy and happy Aiea team.

United came together even happier and scrappier and put the game in the shade, 4-0. The mainland mamas were heading to the playoffs. The first game was against the opposing bracket firstplace team of Oahu.

PV United struck first with great team offense from Hannah “Huhu” Baetge, who distributed the kinipopo extremely well to her teammates.

Violet “Pupule Popoki” Fermanian scored two goals in the first half exciting the crowd. Oahu fought back and scored two goals, and it was tied like a knot at the half.

Then Hana Aguilar showed that she can do some Hana (work) herself.

She swam down the field and scored two difficult goals of her own to put PV United up for good and a 4-3 victory.

The mainland machine was rolling like a 8-foot ocean swell. It would come down to a replay of the historic and already famously reported volcano

stopping all attacks.

“Mako” Makenna Meyer attacked opposing strikers like a hungry shark convincing them that coming her way was the wrong way.

Just before the half ended, Popoki Fermanian fed a ball to “Akamai” Ely-

versus tsunami game that ended in a 1-1 tie with Mililani two days prior. It would be high tide for one of these great teams.

The PV United coaching staff formulated a plan knowing that round two would not be Pahoehoe (smooth lava).

They cast the confident “Shutdown” Sasha Vu against the dynamic Mililani striker #4.

Guess who won this battle?

The defensive back row was finished off by Ellen “Ahi Moa” Brandt who took on anyone and anything. She sacrificed her body to the island gods

sse Tansavatdi screaming down the left side, who finessed a one-touch, left footer under a diving keeper for the goahead goal. Wow! way to go Elysse. #4 was back for more in the second half.

She would not be denied.

Jordyn “the Texas Twister” Caro, whose jersey was recently retired Mau hoa (forever) forgot that #4 would not be denied and denied each and every request for access to our goal.

Juju “Stitches” Panetta, who slashed her foot on a coral cave two days before, put on her own hula show in goal, keeping a lid on the United goal and scoring a goal of her own in a prior game.

“Hui Hui” Erin Murdoch on loan from our beautiful cousins, the PV Heat, stepped up big in midfield, stealing passes and giving Mililani all kinds of Alikia (troubles).

What PV United really needed at this point was one more goal to bury the game in the sand. Who would step up and get it done. As they say, “Opportunities are not missed, someone else steps in and takes it.”

And take it she did. Lauren “Lanakila” Donatoni took a great pass from the midfield and dribbled down with a defender draped all over her like a muumuu on a luau lady and kissed a shot off her laces with aloha nui loa (very much love).

Goooooaaaaalllllllll!!!!! 2-0 PV United.

The PV United sideline jumped and cheered, tipping the island on its axis just ever so slightly. The girls of PV United were champions once again.

A great end to a great season. The team missed Bella Agonia, Sasha Theder, Carol Vogel and Paige Forte.

A hui hou (Until we meet again).

Peninsula Freshman Win Best Of The West Basketball Tournament . . . The incoming freshman class at

Peninsula High School wasted no time in showing their talent at the Best of the West Basketball Tournament in Downey - going 4-0 and winning the tournament championship. The Panthers beat Long Beach Milikan in overtime in their first game and then proceeded to beat Keppel and San Marino high schools before beating Mary Star in the final. Other teams in the tournament included Redondo Beach and Mira Costa. Promenade Celebrates Olympic Day Olympic Day • More than 500 guests and locals attended the first annual Olympic Day Celebration at the Promenade Ice Chalet last month.

The program began with skating demonstrations by Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Hockey participants whose ages range from 3-years-old to 11-years-old.

The inaugural event successfully showcased the next generation of hopeful Olympians training at Promenade Ice Chalet, and engaged the community with a fun-filled free event for families and kids, bringing substantial foot traffic into the ice rink that is located in the Promenade at the Peninsula.

In honor of Olympic Day, celebrity guest judges came out to show their support by participating with the kids, signing autographs and posing for photos with fans.

The guest judges included Ashley Wagner, 2016 World Silver Medalist

Chan, U.S. National Figure Skater and Meteorologist for KTLA Channel 5; and Brian Calle, the Opinion Editor for the So Cal News Group.

Local businesses & brand sponsors joined the event, setting up booths and interacting with guests by handing out free samples and hosting fun activities, like spin the wheel and the Oculus Rift.

Prestige Princess brought Captain America and Spider Man while Anna and Elsa sang their hearts out to the little ones. PV Net, a non-profit technology organization with a focus on youth, had 3D Print stations where guests could design their own molds and toys. El Pollo Inka hosted an after party for celebrity guests and Luna Rosso Restaurant donated gift cards It’s An Olympic Summer . . . The Ice Chalet is the place to be this summer to for raffle drawing prizes. stay cool and have a good time playing on the ice.

PV Estates Holds 55th Annual July 4th Party Celebration • The city of Palos Verdes Estates held its 55th annul July 4th celebration at Malaga Cove The oldest city on the Peninsula took the lead in Independence Day celebrations with an “old-fashioned” July 4th picnic featuring an apple pie contest, a kids bike parade, a tug-war, speeches from local leaders, music, dancing, grilled hamburgers served

by Peninsula Scouts and other family events held at Malaga Cove Fields.

Norris Heritage of Freedom honore Nicola Bridges of Capability Ranch was the guest speaker for the event.
