Measure PV Shines Bright Light On Many School Issues

• School District infrastructure, teacher salaries and student performance are topics for discussions.

By Kristen Lu After years of student complaints regarding dysfunctional restroom stall doors, rat appearances in culinary classrooms and crumbling concrete have been heard. The Palos Verdes Peninsula School District’s (PVPUSD) has proposed a remedy, a $389 million bond to renovate district schools, labeled Measure PV. If at least 55 percent of the Peninsula’s voters approve the bill on March 3, improvement projects that do not necessitate extensive approval will go into effect immediately. Measure PV was placed on the March ballot by the PVPUSD School Board’s Resolution No. 3 on Nov. 6, 2019.

Palos Verdes Peninsula High School senior Amanda Kalaydjian has been a student in the District since kindergarten. While she agrees that school infrastructure is in need of repair, she asserts that there are several unaddressed needs with regard to teachers’ wages that ought to be met.

“I find the measure oddly convenient and inherently selfish,” Kalaydjian said. “Palos Verdes parents are now trying to raise money ‘for the children’, but when our teachers had not received their desperately deserved raise several years ago, there was no community

uproar which is why they had to go on strike.”

Other opponents of Measure PV, most notably the organization Citizens for Responsible Education Spending (PVPCRES), fear that the proposal is too rushed and is missing the consideration from the public who are ultimately the ones that will be mandated to pay for the measure.

According to the PVPCRES website, while Measure PV’s primary selling point has been about improving student safety, there are only $78 million being used for safety-related projects, with the remaining $221 million being distributed to be used for nebulous purposes.

The recently passed Proposition 13, which allocates $15 billion to schools statewide, is, according to the district, insufficient to meet PVPUSD’s needs.

In a public statement, they articulated that because the state directs how the bond’s funds will be allocated, very little of the $15 billion will be given to the district.

Measure PV is substantially larger than previous measures passed with the same intent. Measures K, R and S, all passed in the early 2000s, allotted a total of $86 million for school modernization.

Proponents of Measure PV summarized their beliefs on their website, which draws support from a number of parents and teachers across the Hill.

After drawing comparisons between the quality of PV schools’ facilities and those of neighboring districts, which

allegedly invest more in their schools than PVPUSD, they believe that Measure PV’s passage will ensure that district facilities will, at the very least, be on par with the education Palos Verdes students receive.

PVPUSD parent Selvy Utama explaned her support for Measure PV, stating that in spite of the relatively little time she spends on some campuses, she still is able to take the need for repairs into account.

“We need changes so badly,” Utama said. “There’s no air-conditioning at some schools -- we don’t even have the bare minimum for [students] to learn in a productive manner. Considering the high quality of education our kids receive here on the Hill, the increased property tax to pay for Measure PV is not that large of an opportunity cost.

You can’t put a price tag on quality education.”

Projected changes include updating schools without heating and airconditioning, resurfacing playgrounds, and patching leaky roofs. Two new gyms will be added to Ridgecrest Intermediate School and Palos Verdes Intermediate School, and the pool at Miraleste Intermediate School will be renovated. Campuses will be retrofitted in order to be more resistant to earthquakes and updated to comply with accessibility standards mandated in the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. Other improvements including the repair of sports fields and the replacement of grass with turf are also expected.

PEN‘s Annual Walk for Life Takes On New Importance

Peninsula High held its annual Walk for Life (WFL) on Feb 21 with a changed focus from cancer to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research.

After the school’s fourth period ended, the students rushed into the carnival to enjoy food, sold by the many PVPHS clubs.

Food ranged from bubble tea to chicken bakes, and the students ate and watched various events take place in the amphitheater, including some of their teachers participating in the icebucked challenge.

After an hour of the carnival, the students walked over with their WFL shirts to witness the WFL ceremony. Principal Dr. Brent Kuykendall opened the ceremony with words of thanks and encouragement, then handed the microphone to Amanda Stevens, the wife of Peninsula alumni Eric Stevens who was diagnosed with ALS this past August. She spoke about their experience battling ALS thus far.

The director of Project ALS then spoke about the science behind ALS and its possible cure. Senior Stanley Huang finally came to the podium to

speak about his father who recently passed away with ALS. After these speeches, students sitting on the field were asked to put the flower they were given prior to the ceremony in a vase on the track to honor the lives of ALS victims connected to PVPHS. Finally, Kuykendall counted down for the students to throw their blue powder, made of cornstarch and dye, in the air to close the ceremony. With bags being thrown and blue hues covering the students’ faces and bodies, participants began their walk to #AxeALS.

"Ms. Streetdance" Resides At PEN Dance • Peninsula High student captures dance title for second year in a row.

By Asumi Shuda Peninsula High’s Elle Babich, a junior and varsity COED Choreo member, took first place at the Streetdance competition held in West Torrance High School, giving her the “Ms. Streetdance” title for the second year on a row.

Competing against multiple female soloists, Babich was able to rise above the competition with the help of COED Choreo coach Danyel Moulton and her performance ability and determination before and on stage.

“I wanted to give my audience a reason to smile and genuinely enjoy watching a dance piece,” Babich said.

“This year’s Streetdance solo was definitely one of my favorite solos I have ever done in my dance career, and I wanted to portray that love on stage.”

Babich’s dancing career started years before COED Choreo, in the Peninsula School of Performing Arts, at the age of seven. Up to high school, she was mostly trained in classical styles, but she always enjoyed hiphop above other techniques. So, she auditioned for COED Choreo in the April before her freshman year and became the first freshman to ever make the varsity team. From there, she worked to improve her craft through her involvement in select pieces and, eventually, her solos.

“Actually, when my brother was a high school freshman, he came home one day and told me that I need to join COED Choreo when I get to high school, which jump-started my decision to audition,” Babich said. “But I have always loved hip-hop, and the camaraderie in COED Choreo motivated me to stay.”

According to COED Choreo coach Shigeto Nakano, Babich’s primary strength on stage is performance. Her facial expressions and presence when performing are what distinguished

her as a dancer from the other soloists at Streetdance.

Babich believes, contrastly, that her determination and push as a dancer made a significant difference in the outcome of her solo.

“If you have Elle stand on the stage and, without dancing at all, purely perform with her facial expressions, the audience would still be drawn to her, that is how powerful her performance is to me,” Nakano said. “Performance, as well as her confidence, are definitely her strengths on stage.”

With the remainder of the season and her last year of high school coming up, Babich hopes to continue making lasting memories on COED

By Alexis Ferguson When most people hear “Homeboy industries,” they probably think of the amazing changes to peoples’ lives and the contributions to the community by Father Boyle and his team, but you cannot overlook Homegirl Café.

Homegirl Café is located right next to Homeboy Industries. They are not only serving up amazing food but also an amazing atmosphere. The staff is welcoming and friendly, which makes the dining experience that much better. It took me a while to decide what to order because everything sounded delicious.

day so I decided to order a salad.

Sounds basic, right?

A basic salad like a Caesar is the last kind of salad you will find on their menu. I ordered the house salad, which came with jicama, strawberries, apples and toasted pumpkin seeds on a bed of baby greens.

I chose a citrus dressing from the multiple dressings they offered. If this salad isn’t the epitome of a summer salad, then I don’t know what is. My salad came in less than 10 minutes and was delicious. All the ingredients were so fresh. The jicama and apples were julienned very thinly and paired so well with the crunchy and salty pumpkin seeds.

For me, the dressing has to be great on a salad for the salad to be amazing.

The citrus dressing had to be the best citrus dressing I have ever tried. I loved it because it wasn’t super tart but it was also savory.

I can not put a finger on what it tasted like, but I tried recreating the dressing at home but I couldn’t get anywhere close to the flavor. To wash everything down, I ordered a green juice.

I know many people don’t like green juices because they are filled with vegetables, but you have to order a green juice from here.

Our server came by with two green juice samples: spinach with mint lime-

ade and cucumber. I got the cucumber green juice with pineapple and lime.

If there is one food I hate the most, it is a cucumber. There is something about cucumbers that are repulsive to me, but for some strange reason, I love cucumbers in green juices. This drink was so perfect for the hot day and so refreshing. I also loved the mint limeade because you can’t even taste the spinach, so it really is just healthy mint limeade.

If you are still feeling hungry or if you are like me and are full but want dessert anyways, you have to stop by the bakery.

A must try is the cinnamon swirl bread. Imagine if white bread and a cinnamon roll had a baby, it would be this bread. The bread is so soft and buttery with a sweet cinnamon flavor through-

out. This bread is amazing on its own, but if you toast it, even if you thought it couldn’t get better, it does! In addition, toasting the bread makes your house smell as though you are baking cinnamon rolls so you have an air freshener for the rest of the day.

I could go on and on about all the things I love about this café and bakery but I will keep it short because you need to go experience it for yourself.

First of all, I love the menu. There are so many amazing dishes to choose from and they offer vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.

I personally really enjoyed this because I am not supposed to eat carbs or dairy, which makes eating out hard sometimes, but I had plenty of amazing dishes to choose from. Secondly, you are giving back to the community and an amazing cause but also getting a delicious meal and a great dining experience.

How could you pass by this opportunity? I am just going to answer that for you because the answer is one hundred percent “you can’t.” Thank me later. If you are like me and have a food bucket list, make Homegirls Café and bakery your priority.

Panthers End Season With Memories And Friendships Soccer

• Time for reflection for Peninsula High girls’ soccer.

FRAM Girls Win State . . . The FRAM girls’ 11U soccer club won the state

cup championship (Governors Division) recently. In a tournament with 67 other teams, the girls won eight straight games, six were shutouts, allowing only three goals during their victorious tournament run.

Peninsula High’s girls’ soccer team’s winter season has come to an end, and these players are now reflecting on the results, lessons and memories of these past few months.

With seniors contemplating their last year on the team, and underclassmen being excited for what is to come, the girls’ thoughts about the season are raw and anew.

“Being center-mid requires a lot of

stamina, perseverance and fitness, and I think I definitely bring in that ‘can-do’ energy into my daily life,” said senior, center-mid and varsity girls’ soccer captain Kamea Vierra-Lambert.

Vierra-Lambert has been playing soccer since the age of four, starting play club at seven. With soccer being such an integral part of her life, VierraLambert constantly learns lessons from the sport.

Furthermore, she feels that this past season especially taught her about leadership and the hardships as well as rewards of leading acting a group of girls passionate about soccer.

. . . Continued from Previous Page “I would like to think that I did a good job in leading this team [as captain] and keeping a positive atmosphere on and off the field,” VierraLambert said. “Whenever we made mistakes on the field, I would always try to say some words of encouragement afterward.”

This positive, encouraging team culture is what sophomore and goalkeeper Gianna Rosato believes pushed the girls throughout the season. Being a goalkeeper allowed Rosato to see the entire field from a farther viewpoint, which provided her the opportunity to utilize her leadership skills while witnessing the camaraderie of her teammates on the field.

“We definitely worked as a team this season and competed for each other instead of against,” Rosato said.

“Being able to motivate each other on and off the field really pushed us to improve our game.”

As the number of months until graduation shrinks for seniors like Vierra-Lambert, reflection on past seasons as Peninsula’s girls’ soccer player comes in mind.

“I want to encourage the girls to step up and be that leader on the team who always keeps the environment positive,” Vierra-Lambert said. “It is important to encourage the team to smile, laugh, and feel that soccer is an amazing, fun sport that can be experienced with their sisters on the field.”

Peninsula Dancer Looks Back On Accomplishments . . . Continued from Page 5 “For the rest of high school, I want to have a good time on COED Choreo and continue pushing myself to the best of my ability as a dancer,” Babich said.

After years of dancing competitively, Babich looks back at her years in the dance world and wishes that her younger self was not so self-critical. She believes that, in the end, her worries from years past would have dissipated no matter what and would

actually flower into her current accomplishments as a team dancer, soloist, and person.

“I wish I was not so hard on myself all those years ago,” Babich said.

“I used to beat myself up about not being the best dancer in the room for certain styles, and I wish I could have told her that it would not be the end of the world and that she will soon be doing great things in high school with dancers she loves and on a stage she will adore.”

The Palos Verdes High girls’ varsity soccer team finished a great season, going undefeated in the Bay League and compiling an overall record of 178-2.

The first round of CIF playoffs was against the Valencia High School Tigers where a top-notch defense took the game into overtime. Kylie McElroy, in goal, had two penalty kick saves leading to the win and advancement to the second round.

Round two of CIF found the Sea Kings hitting their offensive stride as Elena Wingard, and Olivia Yang scored to take the win over Laguna Beach High School.

In the third round the Sea Kings faced off against La Serna High School in Whittier, where PV”s offensive lightning struck again with Sydney Myrick and Olivia Yang both scoring to advance to round four of CIF. In the fourth round, Saturday, Feb. 22, the Sea Kings took the field against a tough South High School defense.

The game was a defensive chess match, which led to penalty kicks and PV losing 4 to 3.

RHLL, SSLL Open Spring Baseball Little League • Rolling Hills and Silver Spur Little League held Opening Day ceremonies last week with Palos Verdes and Lunada Bay Little Leagues will have theirs today.

All four Peninsula Leagues and Junior League have started play with games being played last week.

This seasons Rolling Hills Little League will be celebrating its 65th year on the Peninsula providing a great venue for generations of baseball fans.

The Silver Spur Little League Opening Day ceremonies was highlighted by the presence of former Dodgers and Angels baseball player Mickey Hatcher.

PVYBL Finishes Second Season Basketball • The Palos Verdes Youth Basketball League finished its second season with three championship games held at Peninsula High last week.

The Sky Hoops defeated the Blue Mambas to win the Blue Division title, Purple Haze held back the Mighty Eggplants to take the Purple Division championship and BlackOut downed Lights Out to win the Black Division title.
