Valentine’s Meaning Changes With Time

• Valentine’s Day proves to change in value from grade school, to middle school to high school and beyond.

By Nina Li Last Thursday was the day celebrated with candy, chocolate, cards and, most importantly, love.

In elementary school, Valentine’s Day begins with each student making a shoe box covered with different decorations to hold all their Valentine’ presents.

From glittering cards to red heart cutouts, the classroom is abuzz with excitement. Then the time comes, and each student takes out their handmade cards, with pieces of candy taped on the cover, to hand to their friends and, maybe, even their crushes.

The group of girls in the corner giggle as they watch their crush open the bedazzled card.

“In elementary school, Valentine’s Day is a major event, since many teachers center projects around it, and all the students exchange Valentines with each of their classmates,” said high school student Emily McGinn.

“Now, it’s more like a normal day for me; it seems like a holiday for only select people.”

During that age and elementary school grade level, the day of Valentines does not symbolize the emotion and feelings we show to appreciate

those around us. It is mainly centered on sweets and sugar.

“I guess in elementary school we did not have any notions of love or significant others. It was then just a day of giving cute candies and cards and being excited to give what you spent the night before preparing,” said Peninsula High student Nicole Tam said.

“Today it’s taken more as a designated holiday to lovers. It can be materialistic, but I like to see it as a day of universal love for friends, family and significant others,” Tam said.

In middle school, Valentine’s Day seems to have more significance. Seventh graders begin to date one another, a relationship that is based on pressure from their friends, after they reveal they have feelings for another individual.

However, despite the encouragement from peers, the meaning of the day has slowly changed from looking forward to candy and cards into appreciating friends and significant others.

“Valentine’s Day for me was never anything serious,” said high school student Monet Shibata. “It was about candy and fun on a day that happened to be February 14. However, as I grew up, I realized the importance of the day, not only as a day of candy, but as a day of love and celebrating everyone in my life,” she said.

“I can share my love with them in a way that shows how truly appreciative I am of them, something that I would not have thought about when I was younger, said Shibata.

RHCD 7th and 8th grade students finished 4th out of 18 schools at the Regionals of the National Science Bowl Competition held at Cal St. Los Angeles. Dancers Take First Place On The Street Dance

By Asumi Shuda Peninsula’s hip-hop team, COED Peninsula High Choreo, has again accomplished an impressive feat at their most recent competition, Streetdance, last weekend.

The event took place at Tustin High School in Orange County, where teams from schools across the South Bay gathered to showcase their craft.

COED Choreo won a first place in the Medium Female Street Dance, Large CO-ED Street Dance, and Small CO-ED Street Dance categories, as well as a fifth place for Small-Male Street Dance.

The team also had its first Ms. Streetdance, or winner of the female soloists title with sophomore Elle Babich.

Because Streetdance judges have a

preference for a dance style that is different from the typical sets COED Choreo displays, the team has not placed as high in previous years. However, this year the pieces are more of a hip-hop style, contributing to its success.

The team started the competition at 5:30 a.m., waiting for the bus in the parking lot of Peninsula High, with duffel bags full of costumes on their shoulder and COED gear on their backs. After arriving at Tustin High, the team gathered with the coaches and soaked in the schedule for the day.

COED Choreo has, from the beginning, emphasized sportsmanship and support, members are heavily encouraged to cheer on fellow team members performing. This requires a set, meticulous schedule of the times of the pieces being performed. Along with time

needed for makeup and changing into costumes, the team had to manage their time to a T. The team was fairly confident in the competition, as they have been rehearsing the same pieces since last August.

With two-hour practices, five days a week, the dancers felt more than ready to show their work to the judges.

After a 12-hour day full of hectic changing, running to and from the locker rooms, and dancing in front of a panel of judges, the COED Choreo team finally sat in a circle on the Tustin High gym floor. As the announcer read off the placings of the categories the team competed in, the team sat there, hands held and heads down. When “PV Peninsula” was announced for first place in large, all-female, and small, the team jumped and rejoiced. The competition was finally over.

Despite the technical difficulties they faced, from having the order changed to the wrong song being played for a set, the team’s drive persevered in the end. The wins of Streetdance gave the team a new sense of accomplishment and confidence that they hope to continue carrying throughout the rest of the competition.

PEN Drama Excels In Competition

• Peninsula High drama students compete at festival in Fullerton and bring home awards

By Asumi Shuda Twenty students of Palos Verdes Peninsula High’s Drama Department attended the annual California Educational Theatre Association (CETA) High School Theatre Festival Jan. 18 in Fullerton With prestigious awards given to students from various high school productions, the festival was a testament to the success the Peninsula students achieved in their craft.

The CETA is an organization that critiques high school theatre productions throughout Southern California during the October and December months.

The productions that are deemed the best after this two-month process are displayed at the association’s Festival. Along with the performances, participants of the festival have the opportunity to attend numerous workshops

led by well-known figures in theatre.

The workshop subjects range from dancing to dealing with stage fright.

The Festival’s goal is to encourage the education and growth of aspiring theatre performers.

Twenty-four of Peninsula’s drama students received a Certificate of Merit from the association through the different aspects the art has to offer, from makeup work to producing plays.

Those who earned a certificate were from productions of “Girls Like That” and “She Kills Monsters.” Along with these award, the production of “She Kills Monsters,” produced by Chloe Green, Sydney Miller and Kaito Suzuki, earned second place for the Film Trailer competition within the CETA. There is one particular achievement of a Peninsula senior in drama that should be taken note of. Rachel Edelstein, a four-year member of the department, earned one of five scholarships among 96 contestants through the organization. As the award is only

Vaping Quickly Becomes An Epidemic For Young Satisfied?

• Nicotine devices become a new method of addiction for young people.

By Nina Li E-cigarettes have been around for more than a decade, but the popularity of vaping has exponentially increased, especially among high school students.

Vaping devices, namely Juul and Suorin, are being purchased at rates that far surpass the sales numbers of 10 years ago.

The original intent of e-cigarettes was to help smokers gradually stop smoking actual cigarettes and wean their addictions.

However, according to the Child Mind Institute, e-cigarettes were used by more than two million middle school and high school students in 2017 and that number is growing rapidly.

There are endless statistics on how many students vape and how that number has risen over the years, but the true question is what to do about all this exposure to this highly addictive activity from the commercial advertisements for e-cigarette devices.

According to Truth Initiative, an organization dedicated towards educating teenagers and people in general about the harm of tobacco, the sale of Juuls increased 641 percent in one year, selling more than 16 million devices in 2017.

The marketing of Juuls marks the beginning of a frenzy of teenagers wanting to try these devices.

Although these ads have been taken down as a result of pressure from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the ads often dis-

played teenagers socializing with their friends in a club-like environment while sharing flash-drive-like devices.

According to Forbes, this marketing strategy had no explicit intent for the Juul to be marketed as an option for people to switch from cigarettes.

Juuls also come in different flavors, appealing to teens, as well as its teenage-appealing ability to be easily charged through a USB portal.

It is illegal for people under the age of 18 to purchase any products with tobacco in them. However, students are able to obtain these devices through various connections, such as older friends.

The government has stepped in to intervene in this serious problem of nicotine addiction among students by planning to ban the use of vaping devices and putting restrictions on sellers.

But there seems to be no tangible solution to the nicotine problem.

The only way to stop students from vaping is by exposing them to the truth and helping them realize the harm they are doing to their bodies.

Senior James Chin, at Peninsula High School, has noticed the vaping problem on campus since his junior year.

He grew tired of encountering students using these devices in bathrooms on a daily basis and he decided to do something to help his fellow students who have turned towards this addictive behavior.

“I was not going to snitch on these students,” Chin said. “I believe that it would be wrong to punish students for engaging in a behavior that they did not even know was harmful to them. Thus, I settled that education would be the most effective approach,” he said.

“To educate students on the adverse health effects that vaping has, I would

create informational posters. A simple [public] message from the school to students that vaping is simply harmful for your health. At the time our school lacked such a basic approach.”

Chin began an initiative in his Peer Leaders Uniting Students (PLUS) class with two other people who preferred to remain anonymous in this article.

Chin says, “As a member of PLUS, our purpose is to improve our school campus in any aspect. Unfortunately, vaping has become an immense problem that plagues our campus. It has become our priority to combat this issue as it affects everyone on campus. The vaping epidemic affects all students. Students simply wanting to use the restroom feel uncomfortable as they walk into restrooms smothered in vape clouds. Students who do vape partly do not understand the true life-threatening effects that a cigarette would equally propose. I have met countless students who felt uneasy in bathrooms at our PLUS forums.”

An Anti-Vaping Week event to inform students about the harms of vaping will

include educational facts as well as fun activities designed to encourage students to reevaluate their habits.

“Our goal is to not only cease vaping at our school, but raise awareness of the deadly effects vaping brings,” said one PLUS member.

“We hope to achieve this by whatever means possible such as posters or motivational speakers. We hope that spreading the word of how harmful vaping is will discourage students from vaping. After all, we can only stop vaping on our school. What students do in their free time outside of school is beyond our reach. We just hope that students will think twice before vaping.”

Besides the strategic advertising of ecigarettes, one of the main factors contributing to the widespread use of vaping devices is peer pressure. In today’s society, students may think is it trendy to vape because all of their friends are doing it.

“People are going down a slippery slope at our school. Today, students think it is cool [to vape] but it is not,” said

With the influence of vaping, many students tend to miss education, homework and more importantly, their opportunity to succeed in the future.”

Chin, who spearheaded this project, has also talked to Peninsula’s associate principal, Michael Wanmer, to try and curb this problem.

In previous years, the administration has attempted to discourage vaping among students by locking certain bathrooms where many students would vape during passing periods. However, the students still continue to vape despite the attempts.

“I also knew that it would be important to bridge the divide between the student body and the administration,” Chin said. “If more students realize that the administration is not out to catch students for the sake of it, more students would be willing to seek help.

general student body since there are so many students who vape and are addicted.

“I definitely think it is a noble cause and a cause that is worth pursuing just because the amount of adolescents who vape in the United States has increased,” senior Alison Kim said. “There have been studies that show how nicotine affects a brain that has not fully matured yet.

“I think it is an initiative that needs to be addressed but in terms of its effectiveness on our students, I am not completely sure if it will reduce the amount of vaping on campus just because I do not think that the people who actually vape on campus will take it too seriously,” she said.

“However, I think that for other people it is a very informative initiative to make sure other students are aware of the effects of vaping on a teenager.”

Despite the many initiatives taken locally and nationally, the amount of people who vape and the addiction to these devices seems to only grow. However, through events like the one Chin will start, is a hopeful step towards informing the this generation, as well as future generations, just how detrimental vaping can be.

“It is ultimately the students choice to vape,” said Chin.

“My main goal would be to make sure that students at least know what they are putting in their bodies. Once students turn legal age, you cannot stop them from vaping by just telling them to stop. There will come a point when everyone is making their own decisions.

I hope that a few posters in their high school can remind them that vaping is addictive and has detrimental side effects. If I can plant the seeds in people’s minds today, my hope is that it one day sprouts and makes some sense later on, or pricks the conscience to reevaluating their decision,” Chin said.

Second Semester Seniors Find Last Four Months Of School Has Its Challenges College Stuff

• Many high school seniors sit and wait for college acceptance.

By Justin Kin As the first semester wraps up for high schools on the Hill, the prospect of college reality moves closer as the dates for application releases are the main thing left on seniors’ minds.

Some students have already received acceptances through Early Action and Early Decision processes.

Early applications were generally due by the first of November, and students were then notified of acceptances in mid-December. These early applicant seniors have had their futures set for them, without having to worry about getting into a college for the rest of their first semester and their second semester.

A frequently asked question for these students is whether or not they

must maintain their academic GPA and to what extent they must keep their academic performances at.

According to each college, different levels of leeway are given in respect to GPAs. Certain colleges will require a perfect mirror of previous transcripts. Others will allow students to relax a bit.

Peninsula High senior Elleen Kim was accepted into Brown University as a biology major under the program in Liberal Medical Education.

With dreams of becoming a doctor, she was notified of her acceptance on Dec. 13.

“Knowing that I was going to Brown, definitely lifted the worry off my shoulders of waiting for college acceptances, but I’m still continuing everything I did before the acceptance, so it felt pretty normal just focusing on school and enjoying my senior year” Kim said.

In fear of having an acceptance re-

scinded, some accepted students opt to continue with their efforts rather than risk what they have earned. Others kick back and blow off steam, having a well-deserved break from school.

Students are welcome to communicate with admissions offices and currently enrolled students at colleges to get a better idea of the leniency of their school.

Peninsula High senior Monet Shibata received her acceptance into Cornell University on Dec. 10. She was accepted into the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell and will major in Urban and Regional Studies.

“I was not expecting to be accepted at all, so seeing my acceptance letter felt like a dream. Being accepted early meant that I was basically done with college applications. All the college application stress was gone and was able to spend winter break without feeling stressed,” said Shibata.

“I knew I still had to maintain good grades, so I don’t think I slacked off the rest of the semester. Since I’m so used to doing schoolwork at this point in my high school life, it felt weird when I tried to be less productive than usual. Though being a second semester senior means I can ‘slack off,’ I’m still trying my best to stay motivated and productive, “ she said.

The feeling is mutual for both students as they both have been relieved of the heavy burden of getting accepted into college.

It is quite an achievement to be accepted Early Decision. It gives most if not all students relief from their studies.

Kim’s and Shibata’s dedications did not allow them to ease their efforts and old studying habits even after their acceptances. But they are only two examples of exemplary students, which could very well soon be any other student on the Hill.

Valentine’s Day Changes With Time . . . Continued from Page 3 Relationships that last usually begin during high school, the time most teenagers are aware of their feelings for one another and can act somewhat more maturely than compared to middle school.

Valentine’s Day for high schoolers are filled with meaning, not only for romantic relationships, but also platonic relationships. High schoolers understand the importance of the day to express their love for the people who support them.

Of course, the 14th should not be the only day where this happens, but it gives people the chance to truly show their appreciation. Almost an adult, it is important to address the significance

of love and gratitude towards others and remember that Feb. 14 is a day to celebrate love not to celebrate the cavities one can get from eating too many sweets.

“Instead of Valentine’s Day being a day where I would get candy from people in elementary school, the meaning of the day evolved,” said Josh Kim. “During middle school, it became a day to express my appreciation for my friends. Likewise, when I was in a relationship, it would be a day for me to express my appreciation towards my girlfriend. Now, I view Valentine’s Day less of a materialistic thing but rather a time to show how much you value someone, whether it be a friend, girlfriend or loved one.”

Softball Begins 2019 Spring Season Softball

• The Palos Verdes Peninsula Girls’ Softball League opened the spring sports season with an Opening Day parade and divisional league games.

Recent rains gave way early in the morning for teams and families to decorated their team floats at Highridge Park and then drive in the parade to Cornerstone School for Opening Day ceremonies.

After the parade of teams, the softball’s Lighthouse snack-shack opened for business and U10 and U12 took to the field for exciting games.

Basketball Enters Final Period

Playoffs

• The Palos Verdes Youth Basketball League will hold final championship games this weekend.

Third Grade and 4th/5th Grade Divisions will hold semifinal and final games at the Peninsula High Field House Sunday.

The Palos Verdes Basketball Association is about to wrap up its regular season and begin playoff action for boys’ and girls’ 3rd through 8th grade divisions.

PVYBL Finals This Weekend . . .

Miraleste Hosts Robotics Tournament

. . . Continued from Page 5 given to those who hope to pursue the art in college, Edelstein can now utilize the scholarship money to work towards theatre in university and beyond.

“I do not think I would [receive this award] because [the drama department and I] watched everyone in the final rounds, and they were all so good,” Edelstein said. “I thought that I did not stand a chance, so [getting the scholarship] was a genuine shock to me, but I always like a nice surprise [here and there].”

Since her freshman year, Edelstein has always considered drama a significant aspect of her life. Throughout her four years in the drama class, Edelstein has participated in 11 productions along with being part of the stage crew for a couple. She is on the

board of Drama Club as well as captain of ComedySportz, an improv training program.

Finally, Edelstein and the best of the department members attended another festival this past summer in Scotland, called the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, to showcase her and the department’s talent and passion for theatre.

“You can say I am heavily involved with the drama program,” Edelstein said. “You can definitely learn a thing or two from four years of drama –not only theatre-related things but things like people skills as well – so my involvement with the department definitely contributed to me earning the scholarship.”
