PASTORAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM KICKS OFF AT UST ANGELICUM COLLEGE

Eighteen Dominican student-brothers underwent work immersion in the various departments of UST Angelicum College, Quezon City from April 11 to May 11, 2023 as part of the Pastoral Enrichment Program FY 2022-2023.

The said program was designed by the Dominican Studentate Pastoral Board led by Rev. Fr. Lauro G. de Dios, OP, Director of Pastoral Formation, and was aimed at supplementing the pastoral exposures of the student-brothers during the previous long academic break and to provide avenues for the student-brothers to have concrete pastoral experiences in the specific frontiers of Dominican life and mission (cf. RFG 144).

Before the work immersion proper, the student-brothers first attended an orientation for the said enrichment program on April 13, 2023 at the Bl. Jordan of Saxony Bldg. of UST Angelicum College.

Riding in crampled tricycles in the rigorous heat did not weigh down the enthusiasm of the brothers assigned in the pastoral enrichment program on local mission going to Barangay Tatalon. Those assigned student-brothers were tasked to give catechism to the community, particularly for adults, every Saturday of the months of April and May in a makeshift space for worship in the streets of Tatalon. The student-brothers tackled the basic prayers, the Creed, and the Church, while emphasizing the importance of prayer and going to Mass.

A culmination activity was held on May 13, 2023 wherein Fr. Lauro G. de Dios, OP, Dominican Studentate Pastoral Board Director and Parochial Vicar of Santo Domingo Parish made important the notion that everything is interconnected. He urged the faithful to be mindful of one’s actions as these may greatly affect other things in their life.

The activity was also attended by the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) led by Ms. Rosario C. Florendo, BEC Coordinator, Sto. Domingo Parish Youth Ministry and members of other church organizations, who all tirelessly helped towards the fulfillment of this preaching apostolate. BR.

Apostolic groups produce updated manuals

The Dominican Studentate Pastoral Board (DSPB) serves as the umbrella for the planning and implementation of the pastoral ministries of the Dominican student-brothers. It comprises five apostolic groups, with the oldest being Dominican Students’ Media Center (DSMC) which was established on August 7, 1990 and the youngest si Kristo Ang Patutunguhan sa Tulong ng Ina ng Diyos (KAPATID).

During FY 2021-2022, the Retreat and Recollection (R&R) Committee was transferred under DSPB. These organizational structures have thus existed for decades and have been guided by their own respective manuals of operations and procedures.

For this pastoral formation year, the DSPB aimed to update all the manuals of the apostolic groups to align them with their vision, mission, goals, and objectives. The first term was devoted to the review of each manual and research on the history of every apostolic group. During the second term, the apostolic groups have standardized the organizational structure and also updated the manuals based on current practices.

The updated manuals of the five apostolic groups and the R&R Committee, were ratified and promulgated last June 11, 2023 by Fr. Lauro G. de Dios, OP, Director of Pastoral Formation. They were launched on June 14, 2023 during the Opening Rites of the Pastoral Conferences and Exposures Program 2023. BR. JULIAN

‘The Love of Christ Impels Us ’

I have encountered many diagrams in the past that explain how an individual develops and flourishes in an environment that is outside of their daily routine. Some people would refer to this as “outside of their comfort zone”. These schemas seem impressive and inspiring, especially if one would find time to analyze their details. On my part, I would always ask myself, “What can I do outside of my comfort zone?” As I think of this, I cannot help but feel nervous, and unprepared, and would even panic at times because who would want to be removed from their places of security and comfort?

This year, God has challenged me by putting me in the Dominican Students’ Media Center (DSMC). That situation led me to ask, “Can I do it or not?” I admit that I am not a technologically inclined person. In fact, my batchmates would even teach me how to creatively design my presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. But here I am, assigned to the apostolic group of the Dominican Studentate which focuses on preaching by the means of the media of social communications. What do I know about this? I only have Facebook and I just use it to be updated with my friends. YouTube only serves as my pastime.

DSMC Boot Camp 4: Aspiring photographers tour the walled city

Boot camp 4 Photography Workshop was conducted by the Dominican Students’ Media Center (DSMC) last February 11 and 18, 2023. The invited speaker and mentor, Mr. Davy Chioa, OP, Media Assistant of Colegio de San Juan de Letran – Manila, led the student-brothers in developing their photography skills in order to boost their evangelization efforts through social communications. The two-day workshop was held first in the Dominican Studentate, then in Letran Manila for the second session.

The first part of the workshop was a symposium on the fundamentals of photography, picture-taking principles, and practical pieces of advice from

the mentor. Mr. Chioa discussed the topics at length while sharing his experiences in covering festivities and events as an official photographer. The second part was a practical application of the principles which the brothers had learned. Mr. Chioa organized a studio photoshoot in Letran to instill in the brothers the practicalities of studio photography. After that, the brothers went around Intramuros, Manila for a “Photo Walk”. wherein the student-brothers were able to take pictures around the area, applying what they have learned from the workshop. The photos taken by the brothers were reviewed and critiqued by the workshop mentor who then gave suggestions and

recommendations on how to improve their shots. Having been equipped with the principles, techniques ans skills in photography, the student-brothers, who joined the photography boot camp, are already able to contribute more effectively to the social communications ministry of the Dominican Studentate. Some of the participants have already become content contributors to the various social media platforms managed by the Dominican Studentate like La Naval de Manila Facebook page and YouTube channel, DSMC Studios YouTube Channel, and the Facebook pages of the various apostolic groups. BR. RAE AARON A. AGUILAR, OP

This year, however, the Lord has made me realize how important these tools are in spreading the Good News. If there are learnings in this present pastoral formation year, one thing would be the fact that it really takes time to be well-versed in using these platforms and programs. Knowledge, time, and effort are needed so that you would be able to troubleshoot if there are some technical glitches. The next realization is that you do not need to learn everything at once. Since it happens one step at a time, it is significant that one should be able to be open to the help that would be given by other brothers. It is not good to be always self-reliant since people (the brothers), in one way or another, would be important in each phase of the learning continuum as they guide you in achieving the goal of the apostolic group.

The use of the media of social communications is not something to be afraid of but should be welcomed since it facilitates the widespread evangelization of the Church. As a matter of fact, whenever I would be assigned to man the live stream, I am surprised that the viewers of our daily Masses, prayers, and Rosary Hour would be coming from different parts of the globe. Some audiences are even from Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East.

The love of Christ impels us (2 Cor 5:14). I must admit that the thought of being assigned to DSMC is something that I dreaded in the past. What can I, together with my fellow members, do in this apostolic group? My knowledge and skills are not enough to be able to perform my tasks as expected. And yet the given passage from St. Paul reminds me that we will be able to do the right things by having Christ as our motivation.

After staying for a year in DSMC and serving as its Coordinator, I could honestly say that without the help of my members, I will not be able to implement the annual plan that we have designed for this formation year. Whenever mounting tasks are in front of us, I would always recall these words from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians. It is always for and through the love of Christ that we should forget our shortcomings and move as one team to achieve our common purpose.

DSMC joins Siete Palabras’ production

Dominican Students’ Media Center (DSMC) actively participated in and live streamed the different liturgical celebrations held at Sto. Domingo Church, Quezon City, the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary La Naval de Manila, during the Holy Week, that is from Palm Sunday up to Easter Sunday, spanning from April 2 to 8, 2023.

One of the major events during the Holy Week 2023 at Sto. Domingo Church was the resumption of the annual collaborative live streaming of Siete Palabras with GMA Network. The theme of this year´s Siete Palabras resonates the theme of communion and synodality -- ”Krus ni

Hesus: Daan sa Pagkakaisa, Pakikilahok at Misyon.”

On April 5, 2023, the technical dry run was done, and the final rehearsal was conducted with the other cast members on April 7, 2023. Some DSMC members were given the opportunity to work hands-on as floor directors and assistants during the said big religious event.

Indeed, the humble contributions of DSMC to this year’s Semana Santa may be considered as a response to the call of God to preach the Good News in the contemporary world through digital means in the face of the sign of the times. BR.

As part of updating the Manual of Operations and Procedures of the Dominican Students’ Media Center (DSMC), the members have decided to recreate the logo of the apostolic group.

The new logo of DSMC, designed by Br. Eugene Dominic V. Aboy, OP with additions from Br. Peter Lynnus C. Silerio, features a more modern look. It captures the apostolic group’s identity and mission as the social communications arm of the Dominican Studentate in the digital age.

Taking inspiration from the latest devices and technologies of the time, the design uses the play button, the energy sign, the Bluetooth logo, and the playback button to spell out the acronym DSMC respectively. St. Dominic’s hound is depicted setting the logo on fire which symbolizes the brothers’ ministry of preaching the Word in the virtual world. The lines signify connectivity which springs from the brethren’s contemplation of the Gospel, reaching the minds and hearts of the people in the new media.

Focusing the Lens, Capturing the Beauty!

One of the challenges I encountered in doing my apostolate as a DSMC member is to focus the lens and capture the beautiful grace of God’s presence. I tried to reflect on these activities and to connect them to my vocation. In order to achieve them, I have come up with 3S (three senses): a sense of belongingness in a community; a sense of beauty to capture reality; and a sense of sharing for evangelization.

“seize” every moment for it can never be repeated. Hence, I must always be in “focus mode on”.

Dominican Students’ Media Center (DSMC) is for social communication evangelization. Indeed, it plays an important role in preaching the Good News through media. It also strengthens my vocation in many ways.

While focusing the lens of the camera while live streaming, I need to fix my eyes, that is, my point of view, to a specific object that is beautiful. Upon reflection, it is the same in my life. I have many things to do but I need to focus not only my eyes but also my life on what really matters in the present in preparation for the future. Yes, I can explore many aspects of life but if I fail to demonstrate the 3S, then I am only wasting my time in formation. Indeed, I need to

Furthermore, to capture the beauty is to decide to “seize” the moment and to be confident about the results. In my life, I must also make decisions and be brave to face their consequences. Making mistakes is normal and part of life, but always trying to improve and doing better are signs of maturity. Life urges us to think and to take action but if they are not aimed at sharing the beautiful grace of God’s presence, then it is not showing my 3S. So, I always remind myself to be in “capture mode on”.

Lastly, I need to keep in mind that I am a preacher of God and preaching is for His people. My lovely calling is then to create memories by focusing the lens and capturing the beauty of God’s presence everyday in order that I may lead others to God.

PULONG-PULUTAN 2023: Living the Truth in Love

On June 3, 2023, the KADAUPAN Apostolic Group organized its annual discussion centered around the critical topics of justice, peace, and care of creation. The event, entitled “Pulong-Pulutan 2023: Living the Truth in Love,” was facilitated by Prof. Joel C. Sagut, Ph.D., at the Aula San Pio V. This engaging activity served as an avenue for the student-brothers and the lay affiliates of KADAUPAN to reflect and to uphold their commitment to keep being informed about pertinent social issues.

Remarks on Truth and Charity

In Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict highlighted the persistent problem of charity or love being misunderstood and stripped of its true essence. This distortion of love poses the risk of misinterpretation, detachment from ethical principles, and ultimately, undervaluation. Regrettably, love can be subject to misinterpretation and abuse. However, charity can serve as a genuine reflection of human nature and a crucial element in various human relationships, even in the public sphere. Genuine charity only flourishes in truth; it can only be authentically lived when

rooted in truth. Truth serves as the illuminating force that grants significance and worth to chari ty. In today’s social and cultural landscape, where truth is often relativized and disregarded, the act of speaking truth becomes increasingly significant, and its existence is often met with reluctance. Advocating for Truth

Advocating for truth as a Catholic is a profound and essential responsibility. As followers of Christ, we are called to be beacons of truth in a world that often obscures it. Embracing truth means seeking authentic understanding, engaging in critical thinking, and valuing objective reality over subjective preferences. It involves upholding the teachings of the Church, rooted in the Gospel, as a guiding light for moral decision-making. Advocating for truth requires courage, as it may involve challenging societal norms and confronting falsehoods. By embracing truth as Catholics, we contribute to the building of a just and harmonious society, where integrity, honesty, and transparency reign. Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to truth, for it is through truth that we find genuine freedom and draw closer to God.

Walk for Life 2023: Synodality, Accompaniment, and Closeness

Pag-aalaala at Pagmamahal

Saturday, February 18, 2023, was another memorable day for KADAUPAN. The KADAUPAN brothers participated in the “Walk for Life 2023” from Welcome Rotonda to the University of Santo Tomas (UST). The theme of this year’s event was “SANAOL” or “Synodality, Accompaniment, and Closeness” and “Let Us All Walk Together for Life,” taken from Pope Francis’ call for synodality.Walk for Life, which is open to all, is an annual event organized by the Philippine Laity Council. This event is one way of reminding both Christians

and non-Christians that we must choose and work for the protection of life. Here we express our commitment to preserve and defend human dignity as the image of God. This event was also an expression of our solidarity with all the victims of injustice, addictions, sufferings, violence, and perversion of humanity.

Pope Francis reminds us that, “human life must always be suspended from its beginning in the womb and must be recognized as a gift of God that guarantees the future of humanity”. BR. ANDREAS

Sent to be Servants to the Peripheries

Last March 26, 2023, the KADAUPAN lay affiliates had their formation program. It was held at the Mezzanine of the Dominican Studentate. The theme of the talk that was delivered by Br. Ian Joeffrey G. Melendres, OP was “Servant to the Peripheries”. In his talk, Br. Melendres approached the topic by reflecting on the scriptural passage from the Gospel according to Luke on the encounter of Zaccheus with Jesus.

The main thrust of this activity was to form the lay affiliates of KADAUPAN to become servants to the peripheries. It also aimed to rekindle their commitment in serving as KADAUPAN lay volunteers. Moreover, this activity is a way of teaching them the social teachings of the Catholic Church, from which the advocacy of justice, peace, and care of creation of the Dominican Province of the Philippines and the Catholic Church in general,

Dominican Studentate hosts search-in program

This second semester, Pagtugon Sa Tawag (PST), the vocation promotion apostolic group of the Dominican Studentate and the local promoter of Santo Domingo Convent, was busied by the Vocation Discernment Program which consisted of activities aimed at helping the inquirers and prospective candidates to the Order in their discernment. This year, PST conducted the vocation discernment program both online and face-toface, which drew a good number of participants.

PST’s engagement in the vocation promotion this formation year was challenged by the pandemic. It could not be denied anymore that the online platform is necessary for vocation promotion, even during the post-pandemic era since the online platform makes it easy to reach out to those who are in the provinces or could not come for one reason or another. Through online means, the Order of Preachers can thus easily be made known especially in far distant places even if there is no presence of the Dominicans in those areas. Nevertheless, the challenge is how to bring those who meet us online to face-to-face encounters. The face-to-face encounter is still irreplaceable.

And so, aside from the online vocation promotion activities, PST also conducted a face-to-face vocation discernment program through its searchin program. We invited the inquirers, especially those who are living around National Capital

Region, to come to the Dominican Studentate and stay with us for three days and two nights on February 24-26, 2023. We also invited those inquirers who had passed their entrance exam during the Team Preaching program last January 2023.

The inquirers joined almost all of the activities of the brothers. Aside from that, they also had some talk and sharing sessions with the friars. The inquirers joined the prayer schedules with the friars both in the choir and in the chapel and the Way of the Cross. They also interacted with the friars in the refectory. The inquirers also joined the cleaning schedule of the brothers.

The participants of the search-in program were also blessed because, during the talk sessions, they could interact directly with the friars. The speakers were Father Tereso M. Campillo Jr., OP, Father Lauro G. de Dios, OP, and Rev. Mervin G. Lomague, OP. The topics of the talks were similar to the topics of the online vocation discernment program. Besides the same topics, the inquirers of the search-in program also got a chance to ask their questions directly to the speaker. The deepening points of the talk and sharing sessions flowed from the questions from and discussion with the inquirers. Thus, the packaging of the talk and sharing sessions was somewhat different from the online program. BR.

VocProm group goes online to assist inquirers in their discernment

In order to reach out to several inquirers throughout the Philippines, PST held five online vocation discernment conferences. In each session, there was a talk which introduced the inquirers to the nature of religious life, especially about the Order of Preachers, followed by a sharing from the Dominican friars.

The first online vocation discernment program was held on February 12, 2023, with Br. Melencio P. Garcia, OP as speaker. Fray Mhel conducted a “General Orientation on Christian Vocation” wherein he highlighted that holiness as the vocation of every Christian can be attained in various ways. He also pointed out that our task is to cooperate with God’s grace in finding and living our vocation in everything we do.

Br. Robertus Silveriano R. Dearbantolo, OP gave the talk during the second online vocation discernment program on March 4, 2023. He discussed “Consecrated Life and Priesthood” from a historical perspective.

On March 5, 2023, a day after the second online vocation discernment, PST organized an online vocation sharing. Br. Diego Ardianto Halim, OP and Br. Nico Paolo P. Moron, OP were the sharers. The two student-brothers were chosen

to share their vocation stories from different backgrounds. Br. Halim was a career professional before entering the Dominican formation. Meanwhile, Br. Moron shared his vocation story from high school. The inquirers actively participated in the discussion since some of them also have the similar backgrounds and concerns.

Rev. Mervin G. Lomague, OP was the speaker for the fourth online program held on April 28, 2023. Rev. Lomague explained to the online participants the history of the Dominican Order and of the Dominican Province of the Philippines.

The last online program included the sharing of Br. Julian Christopher C. Morada, OP and Br. Jonas Mediavilla, OP who were then about to make their solemn profession on May 24, 2023.

Br. John Rheed M. Caturza, OP, PST Coordinator, and who made solemn profession with Br. Morada and Br. Mediavilla, served as the emcee of the event. In this session, the brothers shared the ups and downs in their lives as religious until their solemn profession. In this sharing, many participants engaged in an interactive discussion, especially on Dominican formation.

KAPATID launches Flowers for Mary

The Santo Domingo Parish recently held its annual Flores de Mayo celebration from May 2 to June 4, 2023. The festivities included communal prayers in the different communities under the Parish, a Santacruzan procession held on May 28, 2023, and an outreach program for children on June 4, 2023. The parish catechists and staff, supported by the KAPATID apostolic group, organized the activities. In line with the celebration, the KAPATID launched a donation drive through online and onsite platforms from May 1 to May 21, 2023. The project entitled, “Flowers for Mary,” aimed to solicit monetary donations from generous donors and devotees to procure flowers to be used in the procession and to buy the school supplies that were distributed to the children who participated in their daily catechesis. The Flowers for Mary project highlighted the community’s generosity and deep devotion to the Blessed Mother, resulting to a successful and joyful celebration

Despite the downpour of heavy rains, KAPATID concluded the Catechesis for Children project for the formation year 2022-2023 on June 10 in Villa España Phase II, Brgy. Tatalon, Quezon City. The culminating activity was held after eight months of conducting catechesis to the said area. The event was attended by around 80 participants, comprising of the children, their parents, the BEC Buklodasal of Santo Domingo Parish, and the Dominican brothers.

The day commenced with a solemn Eucharistic celebration presided by the Master of Students, Rev. Fr. Cecilio Vladimir E. Magboo, OP, at 9:00 AM. Following the Mass, a short program was held. Br. Alfiyando Syahnafi, OP, the Project Coordinator of KAPATID, delivered his opening remarks, thanking the community for their active participation in the project. Mr. Ian Kenneth Seguis gave his words of thanks on behalf of the children. Ms. Rosario Florendo, the Coordinator of BEC Buklodasal, also expressed her appreciation of the activity and wished that the project would continue in the coming years. The KAPATID brothers also prepared a dance and a song presentation, which all the attendees enthusiastically joined. Br. Jonas P. Mediavilla, OP, the KAPATID Coordinator, also gave his words of grat-

itude and urged the parents to sustain what the members of KAPATID started. Finally, the children were awarded Certificates of Participation, rosary beads, and rosary guides. Together with Br. Mediavilla, Br. Gian Linardo Mari T. Estrella, OP, the DSPB Overall Coordinator on behalf of Fr. Lauro G. de Dios, OP, Director of Pastoral Formation, awarded certificates of appreciation to the BEC Buklodasal members for the assistance they extended in implementing the project. The activity concluded with a simple meal shared by the attendees.KAPATID would also like to thank the student-brothers who volunteered to be guest catechists, and the generous donors who made the project a success! KAPATID holds Triduum for the Solemnity of the

Annunciation

In line with the aim of promoting the devotion to Our Lady, the KAPATID conducted a Triduum prayer from March 22 to 24, 2023 as a fitting preparation for the celebration of the Solemnity of the Annunciation. This is the third Triduum prayer project of the apostolic group following those held last year for the Solemnity of the Assumption and the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Compared to the previous year’s Triduum prayers which were pre-recorded at the Dominican Studentate Oratory, this year’s Triduum was conducted at the La Naval Side Altar of the Santo Domingo Church cum populo while being live-streamed. Together with the devotees, the members of KAPATID contemplated the mystery of the Annunciation in front of the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Rosary La Naval de Manila. The prayer started at 5:20 PM, on the first two days, and at 4:20 PM, on the third day, which was earlier than usual because of the Via Crucis. The KAPATID organized this activity in collaboration with the members of the Ministry of Lectors and Commentators (MLC) of Santo Domingo Parish, who served as prayer leaders. In cooperation with the Dominican Student’s Media Centre (DSMC), this activity was also live streamed on the La Naval de Manila Facebook page to cater to devotees who cannot join physically. KAPATID hopes that through activities like this, people will strengthen their devotion to Our Lady, who played an important role for our salvation.

The Journey of an assistant spiritual director of Legion of Mary

"Everyone should have a genuine devotion to her [Blessed Virgin Mary] and entrust his life to her motherly care.” (Apostolicam Actuositaten, 4)

Last June 2022, I was appointed by my brothers to be one of the Assistant Spiritual Directors of the Legion of Mary. When I was informed about my appointment, I felt mixed emotions. I was grateful because my brothers trusted me and my capacity to guide them and the legionaries in the journey of deepening their devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the same time, I was anxious because I did not know how to fulfill my duties and responsibilities as an assistant spiritual director. Nevertheless, I only thought of one thing that inspired me to go on, and that is “Mama Mary, tabangi ug giyahi ko.” (Mama Mary, help and guide me.)

As months passed by, I realized that being an assistant spiritual director to the legionaries was not an easy task. There were so many things that I had to bear in mind and put into practice in order to become a good and devoted assistant spiritual director to them—preparing the allocutio for every meeting, guiding them towards their spiritual growth by giving bite-sized catechesis, sharing some of my personal stories of faith, and many more.

However, on top of all those things, there is one that should always be present, and that is, living with a firm and sincere devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. A brother cannot be a good spiritual director of the Legion if he does not have the devotion characterized by firmness rooted in one’s heart. In fact, it is the first and the most important element that unites the Legion of Mary as one.

As St. John Paull II says to the Legion of Mary, “Your Legion forms a part of those movements that feel personally committed to the spread or the birth of that faith through the spread or the revival of the devotion to Mary.” The devotion should already be planted in one’s heart and mind so that it can be shared with others. Personally, I will not be able to guide my legionaries towards Jesus through Mary if I myself do not have the devotion to her since the beginning. How can I share something about devotion to them if I myself do not have one? St. Paul says, “For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has—not according to what one does not have.” (2 Cor. 8:12). My journey as an assistant spiritual director was like a roller-coaster ride, but despite the ups and downs, I owe it to the help and guidance of the Blessed Mother. It is because of my devotion to the Blessed Mother that I was able to fulfill my responsibilities as an assistant spiritual director. I entrusted my life to her motherly care, and despite all my uncertainties, she did not abandon me on the journey. She was right there, guiding me in every step I made an making me her instrument to lead her legionaries toward her beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Ad Jesum per Mariam!

Blessed and Grateful to Be a Legionary

MS. AESHA PAULA L. DEL ROSARIO (MEMBER, LEGION OF MARY MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS PRAESIDIUM)

One of the most significant things I have learned as a member of the Legion of Mary is how to be close to God through our devotion to his Mother. I remember the time when I first entered the Mary Help of Christian praesidium. I have so many doubts about myself back then. I asked “Kaya ko ba ‘to? Makakayanan ko ba ‘to?” But then I realized, after several months of attending our weekly meeting as an active member of the praesidium, you just need to be committed to the organization to remove those doubts. Now, being devoted to praying the Rosary and the Catena Legionis every day, I believe I have become closer to God. I have also felt much love from my newfound brothers and sisters in the community. The Legion of Mary helped me grow into a woman of value and virtue. I became more courteous, brave, industrious, self-reliant, and purposeful in thought as well as in action. That is why I am thankful that face-to-face meetings are back after the pandemic. Because of our weekly meetings, we became more focused and productive There are also fewer distractions, and it is easier to encourage engagement. Face-to-face meetings help us to improve communication among the members. As we finish another formation year, we thank our spiritual directors, the Dominican brothers, for accompanying us. We also look forward to meeting our new spiritual directors for the coming year.

Pastoral exposure on counseling promotes conversations with UST Angelicum learners

Student-brothers’ catechesis for shrine workers continues

In an effort to deepen the Catholic faith and equip the shrine workers with basic knowledge of the seven sacraments, the student-brothers have continued the monthly catechetical series for the second semester of pastoral formation year 2022-2023. The brothers who conducted the catechesis from January to June 2023 were Br. Nico Paolo P. Moron, OP; Br. Marc Adrian H. de la Peńa, OP; Br. Laurence Ryan V. Mata, OP; Br. Michael Angelo D. Dela Rosa, OP; and Br. Ian Joeffrey G. Melendres, OP. BR. GEOFREY RODERIC EVAN KABA, OP

Responding to the increasing demand of counselors due to the rise of mental health concerns, three student-brothers, Br. Nico Paolo Moron, OP, Br. Eugene Dominic Aboy, OP, and Br. Robertus Silveriano Raditya Dearbantolo, OP, participated in two weeks of enrichment program on counseling at UST Angelicum College, Quezon City.

The hands-on exposure on counseling began on April 13, 2023 with a quick briefing given by Ms. Wednesdee-Perpetual A. Acasio, the Head of the UST Angelicum’s Guidance Counseling and Testing Department.

Ms. Ma. Lourdes S.J. Orbeta, the department’s psychometrician, guided the participants on how to facilitate the entrance exams of learners who wish to be admitted at the Angelicum beside Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City.

Aside from assisting younger children to identify objects, respond to basic questions, and color different things, the brothers also helped in the checking of the entrance examinations of aspiring high school students.

The following weeks, mostly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the brothers engaged in online or onsite routine interviews with the gradeschool learners depending on their availability.

During the routine interviews assisted by Ms. Joyce Anne E. Rivera and Ms. Aubien C. Castro, the brothers shared time with the students to talk about their personal concerns either in school or at home.

The topics of the conversation ranged from the learner’s situation with their families, their strengths and weaknesses in different subjects, along with their fa-

vorite hobbies and their group of friends.

At the end of each interview which lasted for around 10 to 20 minutes, the brothers are expected to submit a short profile about the student whom they interviewed to the respective guidance counselor.

Considering the aftermath of the enrichment program, the participants experienced a very humanizing opportunity for they were able to share in the lives of other people even if only momentarily.

Being able to talk to students and practice what they learned during the summer pastoral exposures, the brothers not only improved their communication skills, but also deepened their preaching by being more in touch with the actual concerns of the flock. BR.

Fr. Lopez reflects on God’s love and mercy for Lent

As an annual activity and preparation for the Lenten Season, the Dominican Studentate Pastoral Board (DSPB), in cooperation with the different apostolic groups of the Dominican Studentate and the Santo Domingo Parish, organized Lakbay Buhay Lenten Recollection 2023 with the theme, “Ikaw Panginoon ay mapagpatawad at sagana sa kagandahang-loob”, on March 25, 2023 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary La Naval de Manila, Santo Domingo Church Quezon City.

The activity commenced with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at 6 o’clock in the evening. This was ensued by the recollection proper at 7 o’clock. Rev. Fr. Allan V. Lopez, OP, the Parish Priest of the San Lorenzo Ruiz and

Companion Martyrs Parish in Navotas, was the recollection speaker. In his talk, Fr. Lopez shared the four faces of poverty, which include physical or economic poverty, cultural poverty, lack of relationships, and mental and spiritual poverty. He cited the corporal works of mercy and the necessity to be immersed (“pagbabad”) with our underprivileged brethren so that we may know their needs. He challenged the attendees to take a course of action, to give their words and mercy to let those in need feel the mercy of God through them. He also invited everyone to pray for them. In this modern time, while embracing the spirit of synodality, those who felt neglected and excluded should also be invited again to journey with them in faith and to give

them the opportunity to participate. Finally, he urged the attendees to be missionaries in this modern time by letting those in the peripheries feel the love and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rev. Fr. Mhandy S. Malijan, OP, the Parish Priest of Santo Domingo Parish, delivered the words of thanks and gave the final blessing. The recollection ended with simple agape shared by the attendees at the Church corridor.

The recollection was well attended by the Dominican fathers and student-brothers, members of the different apostolic groups and of various church organization of Santo Domingo Parish, and the lay faithful. The event was also live streamed via the La Naval de Manila Official Facebook page. BR. JONAS P.

The new logo of R&R employs the Dominican shield with superimposed initials of the committee imitating a military coat of arms. In the Dominican Studentate, the student-brothers are trained to hone their preaching skills to effectively share the Truth Incarnate. The teardrop, which is the focal point of the shield, is reminiscent of what the Chronicle of the Origin of the Order, compiled by Bl. Jordan of Saxony narrates about the Holy Father Dominic as often spending whole nights in the church at prayer, watering the steps of the altar with abundance of tears, and begging for the grace to gain some of unhappy souls to Christ.

The pursuit of the student brothers for personal sanctification through the ministry goes hand in hand with charity and compassion upon those who are deprived of the liberating joy of the Gospel. This desire is symbolized by the dog with the lit torch and whose front legs are lifted signifying movement, as the student-brothers pursue mission to geographical and existential peripheries to bring the light of the Gospel.

UST Angelicum College’s REAP sites welcome student-brothers

They were able to meet volunteer teachers, students, and graduates of the program.

The student-brother’s visit to the REAP sites helped them realize the importance of education which fosters Christian and human growth geared towards alleviating

The Meaning of an Encounter

IN one of his books, Charles Dickens wrote, “Man is a mystery for another.” I could not say anything else but yes. Man is truly a mystery because the idea we have about others in our minds could be quite different once we encounter them in real life. Our experience on local mission – catechetical program for adults – in the streets of Brgy. Tatalon, Quezon City altered our notion of the poor and the faith itself.

The pastoral enrichment program on local mission, a part of the pastoral formation program of the Dominican Studentate, opened opportunities for the brothers to know and interact with the urban poor and the marginalized. This program is held every Saturday for four weeks.

DEAR, BROTHERS. whenever we speak of Pastoral Formation what immediately comes into our mind is equipping you with skills that will make you competent enough in your future ministry. This why we, as much as possible, prepare programs that would make you good pastors in the different priorities of the Province. We can see how serious you are in your effort to acquire all these ‘hard skills’. We appreciate your sacrifices in achieving such skills. In the business world, one usually gets employed, based on hard skills. Today, people are trying to balance their way of looking at competence by talking about ‘soft skills’. These are usually qualitative in nature, like, emotional intelligence, leadership capabilities, empathy, psychological maturity, interpersonal relationship, etc. People now begin to realize that such skills are as important those that one gets from professional training or preparation.

We can also compare such understanding of skills with what we are doing. But allow me to propose slight change that I think would help us love more what we are doing. We are ministers and the foundation of any ministry is prayer. Our motto would say, “To contemplate and to share the fruits of one’s contemplation”. We can say that any pastoral activity that we do ceases to be truly pastoral unless it comes from the fullness of contemplation. For us in the Order it should be the other way around. Contemplation is the hard skill that each one must possess before anything else. Your skill or talent in doing any work as a result of your training is the soft skill. It is only in this way of ordering our life that will ensure that our ministry will be fruitful. Let this edition of Punlâ and your reflections be a testament to that right ordering of life that we dearly hold on to.

From the Director of Pastoral Formation

We know that we cannot fully make you a dynamic leader in the future in the course of your stay in the Studentate, but what we provide now are only meaningful experiences for you to keep and remember. I have personally chosen UST Angelicum College (UST-AC) to be the venue of your enrichment program, not only for this semester but in the succeeding semesters to come, because it is very practical; it is just one step away.

The brothers joined the activities of the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) in their prayer and gave catechism to the designated communities.

Brgy. Tatalon is mostly occupied by the poor. Many of them are illegal settlers living in empty spaces behind the factories, a gas station and under the overhead power line. I was honestly surprised that there are people living in this kind of environment. When I walked through the narrow alleys, sometimes I could smell the stench of gutter, and the humid air coming through the dumping area. Indeed, I wonder how men could be forced by their circumstances to live amidst this humble situation. It seems that for these people, to acquire the basic needs of life is already a luxury in itself. But then again, when situation requires people to adapt in order to live, they do adapt, also spiritually.

From what seemed to be bleak surroundings, faith shines forth in its brightness. I expected only a few people joining our catechesis since many of them are trying to earn for a living. Yet surprisingly, many joined us: children, mothers and grandparents. From this encounter, I realized that material limitation does not mean spiritual lethargy. They are poor and often are sidelined in the society. They do not have nice houses or

Synodality:

Being

even proper clothes but their trust and faith in God could not be undermined. They might not be that knowledgeable about Church’s teachings but their reliance on God is truly impressive. They are aware that life can be very hard, and sometimes, to survive the day is a matter of great deal. But they do survive because faith in God teaches them that life has a meaning and hope never fails. Indeed, people whom we encountered struggle hard to keep their life, but they are content that they struggle for people whom they love. Seeing their perseverance, I remember the words of St. Boniface, “What we ourselves cannot bear, let us bear with the help of Christ.”

Present, Listening, Journeying

MY BROTHERS, as I have told you before, the Pastoral Enrichment Program is designed to reinforce what was introduced to you last summer. Last semester, you had your own seminars, boot camps or capability building workshops that somehow complemented the thrust of the pastoral program of the Studentate. Being sensitive to the demands of your academic requirements, we are only squeezing in this a month-long enrichment program prior to your finals. Thus, we have to make the most of what we got than nothing at all.

Whether you like it or not, as future priests and brothers of the Province, the Church and the stakeholders of the institutions we are running for the propagation of the Catholic faith, expect from you the kind of leadership rooted in the tradition and thrust of the Province and of the Order. As you are being prepared to be academicians, professors, and experts in theology, philosophy and canon law, never limit yourself to these alone, because for most of you, you will be priests, and with that you have to take the challenge to live out the munus triplex of Christ - as a faithful intercessor, a zealous witness of faith and a servant leader!

Yes, UST-AC is only one of our educational institutions, which is only one aspect of your pastoral thrust. However, as you come close and see how they are faithful to education per se, you would see all the aspects of the pastoral thrusts of the Province in this humble school. Aside from the leadership and resources management, UST-AC is also engaging in local mission and justice and peace by making education as a means to alleviate poverty in our country; they are also into guidance and counselling for any academic journey requires a good companion to guide and coach our young people; more so, UST-AC is a fertile place for pastoral ministry where young minds begin to develop their sense of personal identity, but their spiritual identity as well. You have to bear in mind that any learning institution is dedicated not only in honing the mind, but it is dedicated to the integral formation of the whole person.

Equally important, UST-AC is the pioneer of the non-graded system of education in the Philippines. This is our own and as young Dominicans you have to be proud of the legacy of our forebears who painstakingly gave birth to this innovative system of learning. When I was asked to go to Iloilo, I was only three years in the priesthood. At first, I have my hesitation, but my exposure to Angelicum College, Quezon City somehow gave me the courage that I can do it not just because I know the system, but the friendships that I have established with the lay administrators made me feel that I have people to lean on. When we were young coristas we too had our fair share in crossing the door near the gym area of the Coristado to teach in Angelicum or to be assistant facilitators in the Home Study Program. During those days, it deepened my appreciation of the system. More than that, I came to know and became grateful to the presence of so many dedicated lay people who are working for us and making this system really work!

With this, I hope and pray, that this short exposure of yours may provide countless opportunities not only in appreciating your vocation, but most especially also the vocation of the lay people around you, who believe so much in our ministry in educating the young people of today. God bless you my dear brothers!

(This is an excerpt from the Opening Remarks delivered during the Pastoral Enrichment Program FY 2022-2023 Orientation held on April 13, 2023 at UST Angelicum College, Quezon City.)

IN the pastoral enrichment program for urban/rural poor and care of creation, we were assigned to the Re-Entry Education Agenda for the Poor (REAP) Program of UST Angelicum College, Quezon City. In this program, we have realized three important things.

The first learning that we’ve got is on the apostolate of presence. Our very presence gives joy to the people whom we have encountered because they see and feel that the Church is moving with them. I remember Fr. Simon, OP simply telling us, “We will go there to visit and get to know them.” To be with them is to give them our time and a part of our lives. Perhaps, this is also another way to understand the call of Christ for us to give up our life. We will not die literally, but giving them a part of our time is already giving them a sig-

call, that, as what St. John Paul II would remind all religious in the document Vita Consecrata, each individual must be totally conformed to the image of the Master they serve. When we do our apostolate, we must be absorbed in the person of Christ, so that we may know that we are there, first and foremost, because of Him who called us to serve.

The third important lesson we gained is a deeper realization that since we are greatly blessed, we too must become a blessing to others. As Dominicans, this blessing which we have is no less than Jesus himself. This same blessing is what we must share with others through education and apostolate. One of our mottos is ‘Benedicere’ or to bless. We can effectively do this by being a blessing to others by our gift of self and our gift of giving them our time and our life to lead them to Jesus. Knowing this, we will be grounded that we must not only save either the body or save the soul alone. In a holistic manner we must save, nourish, and educate the whole human person.

nificant part of our life. Presence is important. This is even the very reason why Jesus had to incarnate and to take on the human form – to be one like us and be with us so that we may know and realize that what is before us is true love.

In our visit to the various REAP sites, we felt that people somehow see Jesus in us (hopefully). Fr. Simon, OP, also urged us to wear the Dominican habit in almost all of our exposures in order to remind us and the people that we come, not in our own name, but in the name of the Dominican Studentate, in the name of the Church, and in the most profound way, in the name of Jesus. This allows us to reflect on the deep reality of our religious

All of these learnings can be summarized by one word and that is, ‘Church’. We have felt and experienced what it truly means to be a Church. Simply, it is to walk and journey together towards giving birth to the Kingdom of God in our society. In educating the youth, we fulfill this mission by making real what the Baltimore Catechism would lay down in its beginning chapters: “The purpose of man’s existence is to know, love, and serve the Lord.” Education can lead the youth to know Jesus, and as what St. Thomas Aquinas believes, knowing would lead to loving what we know. And only through knowing and loving Jesus can we be led to serve Him and His Church. Indeed, as the old Filipino proverb goes, “Ang sakit ng kalingkingan ay dama ng buong katawan’. Lahat tayo ay dapat may pakielam at makilahok tungo sa pag-akay sa lahat sa landas patungo kay Kristo.” All ways and means must lead and end in Christ.

The Joy of Walking in the Truth

Stewards of God’s Gifts

of a master who, before going on a journey and entrusted his possessions to his three servants. Two of those three servants invested the talents given to them which resulted in the doubling of their value; while the last servant only dug a hole where he kept the talent unutilized and unfruitful. When the master returned, he was very joyful when he learned from the two servants that his possessions doubled under their care while he became angry with the lazy servant who did nothing for the improvement of the talents left under his possession.

“I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my children are walking in the truth” (3 John 1:4). This verse from the Third Letter of John wholly captures my experience in the pastoral enrichment program on guidance and counseling at UST Angelicum College. Such experience brought me joy – a joy coming from encounters with various learners in a personal way. It was a joy that started from the simple question, “How are you?” at the beginning of each interview session.

Before the actual interviews with the learners of UST Angelicum College, I first tried to remember what are the things that I must do as a counselor, which I learned from our pastoral exposure program held last June 2022. The Guidance Counseling and Testing Department also gave me a list of guide questions for my encounter with the learners.

I was blessed to talk to 17 learners. I always began the interview with, “How are you?” I thought this question is just for “formality”, but I was wrong. Rather, this question opened a door into the souls of these children entrusted to us by their parents. Some learners were shy, but some were comfortable in answering questions. Gladly, I was able to build a connection with them.

In every session, I have always received a precious gift, that is, a story of and from the learner. Each story tells about the journey of every learner, not only in academics but a glimpse of their whole life. Through that same story, I was able to appreciate

them and hopefully assisted them in their needs. I also saw different pictures of the realities of family life. I even came to know how each learner tries his best to be a good child in their home and a good student and friend in school. Therefore, the stories of the learners also opened my eyes to the importance of the Christian family and Catholic education.

More importantly, I have also grasped from their stories how they try their best to walk in the Truth; to struggle with the Truth; and to encounter the Truth in different ways. These are shown in their attempts to balance their study life and family life; in helping each other; in being open to their respective families and learning facilitators; and many more.

I have realized that Catholic education does not only give the best education for the young generation; it also prepares the students entrusted to them to encounter the Truth. My exposure in the Guidance Counseling and Testing Department of UST Angelicum College indeed allowed me to appreciate the importance of accompanying the young generation in walking in Truth, in finding the Truth, and in encountering the Truth.

Gratiarum Omnium Largitori, the second bull of Pope Honorius III to St. Dominic, gives praise to God who is the giver of all gifts. It is an acknowledgment that the source of all things is the Creator and we are only stewards of all of those gifts (cf. Gn. 1:28). This reminds me of the story of the Parable of Talents (cf. Mt. 25:14-30) which speaks

The realization that I had during our pastoral enrichment program on leadership and administration in the Finance and Human Resource Departments of UST Angelicum College is that all of the institutions and ministries of the province are gifts from God to the Order. As stewards of those gratuitous gifts enriched by the sweat and blood of our forebears, we must embrace our roles as stewards of those gifts and do what is right to the best of our abilities. Different institutions and ministries would mean different responses from us stewards but one thing is certain, we must be trustworthy. A trustworthy person is proactive, responsible, a visionary, and has initiative. Becoming trustworthy encompasses all the positive traits that one needs to develop in order to become a good leader and administrator; but most importantly, it is also a reciprocation to the trust that the community has given. Ultimately, to be trustworthy is an authentic response to the call of God to be stewards of his gratuitous gifts to us. It is our hope during the end time that we hear from the Divine Master what he said to his faithful servants, “Well done, my good and faithful servant... Come, share your master’s joy” (Mt. 25:21).

Punlâ is the Pastoral Newsletter of the Dominican Studentate which features events and activities related to the ministry of the brothers and their apostolic groups. It aims to promote awareness about the missionary endeavors of the brothers and their lay collaborators who tirelessly contribute to the propagation of the Gospel in their ministries. It also serves as a means to express the brothers’ gratitude to their benefactors and partners for their invaluable help in responding to the needs of the Church and society.

The Filipino term “punlâ” not only signifies the seed, but more importantly connotes the act of sowing. This expresses the dynamism of the brothers’ apostolic ministry, rooted as it is in their life of contemplation as students committed to the sowing of the seed that is the ever-fruitful Word: “So shall my word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to me empty but shall do what pleases me, achieving the end for which I sent it,” (Isaiah 55:11).

Five Dominican student-brothers were invited by Sto. Domingo Parish Youth Ministry (SDPYM) to share about the Fruits of the Holy Spirit as part of its formation program for the youth. The talks and activities of the brothers took place at the Sto. Domingo Parish Office building on Saturdays in April and June 2023. The brothers who shared were: Br. Michael Angelo D. Dela Rosa, OP on love and joy; Br. John Rheed M. Caturza, OP on peace; Br. Joenner Paulo L. Enriquez, OP on goodness; Br. Denver Marx B. Colegado, OP on faithfulness; and Br. Julian Christopher C. Morada, OP on gentleness. The said formation series on the fruits of the Holy Spirit also served as an avenue for the brothers to enhance their skills in preaching and also have a meaningful encounter with the youth of today. BR. GIAN

Rev. Fr. Lauro G. de Dios, OP, the Assistant to the Master of Students, the Director of the Dominican Studentate Pastoral Board (DSPB), and concurrently the Parochial Vicar of Sto. Domingo Parish was elected the new prior of the Convent of St. Albert the Great in Calamba City, Laguna. Fr. de Dios, OP was installed prior of the Convent of St. Albert the Great on June 28, 2023 at St. Albert the Great Chapel, Colegio de San Juan de Letran - Calamba.

KADAUPAN brothers and lay visit the sick in Tatalon

Last April 16, 2023, the KADAUPAN brothers and lay affiliates went to Brgy. Tatalon to visit some of the sick members of the community. They were accompanied and assisted by the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) leaders of the Sto. Domingo Parish

It was a day of encounter with the sick and the elderly of the parish community. The studentbrothers, together with the family of the sick and the elderly people, prayed together for their healing. They also brought relics of St. Martin de Porres, St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Pio of Pietrelcina to bless and to have them venerated by the sick and their families.

The main thrust of this activity is to make the KADAUPAN brothers and lay aware of the realities of life that the people are experiencing. It is therefore a way for the Church to be in solidarity with the suffering of her members. It is also essentially a way for KADAUPAN to bring the Church to the people and encourage them to come back again to the Church after the devastation caused by the pandemic.

Indeed, Jesus was made present in the homes of the families when KADAUPAN members visited the sick in Tatalon. BR. MARCO MIGUEL C.

There were two speakers during the orientation: Prof. Eunice Mareth Querol-Areola, PhD, HSG – Director for Academic Affairs of UST Angelicum College and Dr. Maria Urduja Galang – Senior High Principal of UST Angelicum College. Dean Querol-Areola oriented the brothers on the strategic direction of the school, while Dr. Galang discussed the Angelicum system of academic delivery. Other UST Angelicum College administrators were also present during the orientation.

For one month, the student-brothers rendered six working hours a week in the various departments and areas of UST Angelicum College such as Human Resource Department, Finance Department, Guidance Counseling and Testing Department, the Home Study Program, and the Re-entry Education Agenda for the Poor (REAP) Program.

The pastoral enrichment program will be done each semester of every pastoral formation year moving forward. BR. JOHN RHEED M. CATURZA, OP

Urban poor team profiles the community of Don Pepe Street

As part of their pastoral enrichment program on urban poor, five student-brothers, including two from the care of creation group, went to Don Pepe Street in Brgy. Sto. Domingo, Quezon City last April 2023 in order to conduct a community profiling. Its aim was to gather data about the residents of the said area identified as a possible adopted or partner community of UST Angelicum College, Quezon City. The said activity was initiated by the Extensive Services of UST Angelicum College led by Fr. Simon Peter dL. Ramos, OP. The staff from Brgy. Sto. Domingo, led by Ms. Christie Talimoro, also assisted the brothers. The community profiling allowed for an encounter between the brothers and the people in Don Pepe Street. Hopefully, the brothers were able to see and grasp their situation. On the other hand, the residents of the area also felt the presence of the Church and of God in their midst.
