THE DOMINICAN STUDENT-BROTHERS organized a gift-giving initiative titled “Damayan 2021” for families of the barangays surrounding Sto. Domingo Church and the employees of the convent on Dec. 23, 2021 at the UST-Angelicum Gym. Thanks to the generous support of the benefactors and the cooperation of local officials, a total of 300 families from Bgy. Sto. Domingo and Bgy. Tatalon were given gift packages containing goods for Noche Buena and several supplies in a blue pail to aid in their economic upkeep.

STUDYING amidst the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be difficult. Yet this sentiment is no less felt by those teaching. And for those who engage in both, it is doubly difficult and challenging.

‘Be consoled my people’: DSPB holds virtual Advent Recollection ADVENT is the season of the liturgical year observed in most Christian denominations as a time of hopeful waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Christ at Christmas and the return of Christ in the Second Coming.

Last Dec. 5, 2021, the Dominican Studentate Pastoral Board (DSPB) with the assistance of the different apostolic groups, organized the annual advent recollection in Coristado.

The speaker for the said event is a member of the Priestly Fraternities of St. Dominic de Guzman, Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas, OP, DD. He is also the current archbishop of LingayenDagupan in Pangasinan.

The event was held in an online conference via Zoom.

Villegas highlighted the eight beatitudes as the theme for this year’s advent recollection.

He said a real Christian and disciple of the Lord must be obedient to the ten commandments, both publicly and privately.

“Be holy because the sure way to joy is holiness… aim at holiness, walk in righteousness;

there is no other path.

Righteousness is the path, holiness is the destiny. It is the plan of God for you” the bishop said.

Bishop Villegas also pointed out that a good Catholic must also possess preferential attention, time, and talent for the poor. We must devote extra time, extra effort, and extra care for the poor.

“You want to be happy? Give.

You want to be successful? Give.

Because giving is the best proof of loving, and those who love will merit life everlasting,” he added.

The poor people are our masters and our lords, according to Bishop Villegas. Lastly, he emphasized that the Christian life must be nourished by community life, and the spirit of advent is all about loving even our enemies. Br. Mark Lawrence s. Gianan, OP

last Aug. 30, 2021 as a supplementary preparation for those admitted to the liturgical ministries (RFP July 2018, 85).

Aside from the Student-Brothers who were installed, the other members of the Studentate community also graced the online conference which serves as an orientation for the said ministries.

The speaker for this event was Rev.

Fr. Carmelo P. Arada, Jr., OP (Archdiocese of Manila) who is the assistant minister of the archdiocesan Liturgical Commission – Manila. Aside from this capacity, he also teaches at the Institute of Preaching which was the reason why he was familiar with some of the Student-Brothers.

focusing on the different aspects most especially on the development of the historical and theological standpoints.

He also highlighted parts of the Ministeria Quaedam, the apostolic letter written by Pope St. Paul VI issued after the Second Vatican Council creating the ministries of lectors and acolytes.

Pope St. John Paul II, in his Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 5, said that there is this

wonder that fills the Church assembled whenever there is an offering of the holy sacrifice of the Mass.

Those involved in the celebration, whether minister or server, must also be filled in amazement in a special way for being part of the Eucharist is not just performing tasks but a personal encounter with God. Br. Julian Christopher Morada, OP

DSMC conducts on the spot training program

MUKHA AD Conducts Special Staff Training

THE DOMINICAN Students’ Media Center (DSMC) launched its Capability Building Program on Nov. 4, 2021 which aims to equip the Student-Brothers on the nitty-gritty of the livestreaming process.

Each Student-Brother in the community was given a three-day schedule to have a full firsthand experience of the ministry.

They were accompanied by two DSMC members who gave the walkthrough on how to man the computer table and how to set up the cameras during the liturgy.

Currently, the livestreaming booth houses two computers. The main computer broadcasts the prayers online, while the second PC is used primarily to monitor the stream and to reply to the people’s queries. Two cameras are also in place during the streaming: one for the wide angled perspective and the other for the close-up view.

The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary – La Naval de Manila and the Convent of Sto. Domingo started their online ministry in 2020 during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

DSMC was tasked to do the daily streaming since, and the brothers continually learn to further improve this ministry for the people. In foresight, both the Shrine and the Convent is eyeing to continue this online ministry even after the pandemic ends.

Thus, the Student-Brothers in Sto. Domingo have begun to train everyone other than the members of the DSMC with the aim of one day including this ministry as part of the brothers’ liturgical assignments.

The apostolic group also wishes to thank their dear readers, listeners, mass goers and benefactors for continually seeking the Lord despite the ongoing global crisis. We all hope and pray that this crisis will end. Br. John

MASIGLANG Ugnayan ng mga Kabataang Hinuhubog sa Anyo ng Anak ng Diyos (MUKHA AD) conducted a three-day special staff training featuring leadership, youth formation and online counseling sessions on Aug. 15, 29 and Sept. 5, 2021.

This training aimed to empower the MUKHA AD staff, Student-Brothers and youth affiliates to become co-formators in molding the youth in the likeness of Christ through various activities that will help them build their capabilities and foster suitable disposition for the upcoming formation of Batch 32.

To let the MUKHA AD staff be knowledgeable about the roles and responsibilities of a MUKHA AD leader and to cultivate leadership attributes patterned after the face of Christ, the Virtual Leadership Training Seminar was held on Aug. 15, 2021, via Zoom with Br. Michael Angelo Dela Rosa, OP as speaker and Ms. Julie Ann Ogayon, OP, a MUKHA AD alumna and a lay Dominican, as sharer.

Br. Dela Rosa engagingly talked about “Servant Leadership: Becoming the Face of Christ to Others” while Ms. Ogayon shared about her own experiences and views about being a MUKHA AD leader. A separate online session on Aug. 22, 2021, was also conducted to process the learnings of the participants.

The Webinar on Youth Formation on Aug. 29, 2021 featured a talk on, “Youth Forming Youth in Light of the Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit” by University of Santo Tomas Institute of Religion faculty member Mr. Leo-Martin Angelo R. Ocampo, OP. Aside from shedding light on Christus Vivit and what it says to the youth of today, Mr. Ocampo also suggested other potential areas that can be harnessed in youth ministry with which MUKHA is directly involved.

THE RADIO committee of the Dominican Students’ Media Center (DSMC) aired its first live episode of Usapang Kristiyano, Usapang Katoliko or UK Radio for this formation year last Oct. 31, 2021.

The theme of the episode, “Beatitudo: Isang Gabay sa Pagpapakabanal ng Tao,” was based on Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation “Gaudete et Exultate.”

Br. John Paul Sontillano, OP, the guest for the episode, emphasized that all Christians are called to holiness, making the topic very fitting since it was aired a day before the Church commemorates All-Saints Day. “Lahat tayo ay tinatawag maging

banal. So there is such a thing as universal call to holiness. Ang pagiging banal ay… hindi lamang para sa mga pari, bishops, religious, deacons, kundi para sa lahat,” Br. Sontillano said.

Responding to a question from the audience online, Br. Sontillano urged a student to apply the Beatitudes in his daily life and to be true to his role in society by being faithful in striving for holiness.

“Kung estudyante ka, maging Kristiyano ka sa classroom niyo even sa online class… Do not cheat, be diligent, mag-aral kang mabuti and have a pastoral orientation sa studies mo.”

He said.

Br. Sontillano also highlighted

that Dominicans have the responsibility to study, not for selfgain, but for the purpose of sharing and ministry. “[T]ayong mga Dominicans, we study not only for school but for life and for preaching. Hindi selfish yung pag-aaral natin na para sa atin lang, the knowledge will just remain in us, but to be able to share this and I believe that is holiness,” Br. Sontillano said.

This formation year’s radio department of the DSMC envisions to have an interaction with the faithful by asking them the topics they wish to be discussed on the next episode and by letting them participate in the discussion during the live broadcast.

FOR MORE than thirteen months, the altar servers of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary La Naval de Manila were not allowed to serve in person due to the dangers and threats brought about by COVID-19 pandemic. But despite that, they made use of different platforms to meet together as a group every Sunday to continue nourishing themselves by learning more about the Christian faith through their Sunday Catechetical School with their Assistant Spiritual Director.

When the vaccination of teenagers started, many of them were vaccinated and were allowed once again to serve in every Eucharistic Celebration in the church. They were only required to follow strict health protocols and to have one server per Mass.

Moreover, many of them renewed their commitment on Dec. 5, 2021.

As the condition of the pandemic lightened, they were also allowed to serve as a group during the Simbang Gabi. They wanted to have a face-to-face Christmas party.

However, some members below 18 years old were still not vaccinated, so they opted for the online Christmas party.

The selfless acts of the altar servers who wish to continue helping the Church and serving the Lord in their way physically and virtually show that age does not matter for anyone who wants to worship the Lord Jesus through their service. As the Lord said to the prophet Jeremiah, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you—oracle of the LORD” (Jer. 1:7-8). Br. Marc Adrian h.

FOR ALMOST two years now, we can say that it is praise-worthy to witness that the Dominican StudentBrothers have found a solution to reach out to the people of God through their facilitation of retreats and recollections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was pretty challenging at first because while the Student-Brothers were assured that they have a good internet

connection on their end [thanks to the University of Santo Tomas], they also needed to consider how they can nourish those whom they need to shepherd via an online platform.

More so, we can tell that this pandemic has challenged them to squeeze their creative juices to come up with presentable, exciting, and heartfelt retreats and recollections for the audiences they meet virtually.

There had been plans for team preaching set on July 2020 but due to the rising COVID-19 cases all over the Philippines and the restrictions due to health protocols, schools were forced to continue the use of online classes and seminars.

Unfortunately, the team preaching for that year had to be canceled but the Student-Brothers found a way to communicate with the schools and cater to the needs of students, parents, teachers, staff, parish volunteers, and others who would send their invitations by making use of Zoom and Google Meet.

For those who have unstable internet connections, video recordings of the preaching of the Student-Brothers were sent to the schools so that students who live in far-flung areas may be able to download and watch the reflections when the opportunity arises.

It is worth mentioning and with much appreciation that schools such as the Dominican educational institutions of the friars and of the Dominican active

Both experts shared their knowledge and insights about the importance of our choice to be vaccinated.

OCTA fellow and a molecular biologist, Br. Nicanor Pier Giorgio R. Autriaco, OP, said that people should not be afraid of the COVID-19 vaccines, clarifying misconceptions about the side effects of the vaccines which are “relatively mild.”

A doctor and infectious disease expert from the University of Santo Tomas, Maria Rhona GatpandanBergantin, said the protection that we get from the vaccines is far better than the side effects.

Both Br. Austriaco and Dr. Bergantin explained that our choice to be vaccinated makes a big impact to society because vaccines can protect us and our loved ones from the virus and can rapidly contribute to the end of the pandemic.

Br. Albina informed the viewers that Red Wednesday is a day to remember Christians around the word who have become victims and are currently facing violence and martyrdom.

KATARUNGAN ng Diyos ang Ugat ng Payapang Adhikain (KADAUPAN) published two “KADCaST” videos for the formation year 2021-2022 in their Facebook page, “Dominican Studentate for Justice, Peace and Care for Creation.”

The first KADCaST (which stands for KADAUPAN Catholic Social Teaching) was published on Oct. 27, 2021 and it discussed the importance of getting vaccinated during the time of pandemic.

The title of the first video was, “Getting Vaccinated as an Act of Love” and it was conceptualized by Br. John Wilson Nucum, OP who interviewed two experts in the scientific and medical field.

Receiving positive feedbacks along with some areas for improvement were also helpful in ensuring the quality of preaching that the Student-Brothers need to develop as they grow in formation.

One of the plans that the Dominican Studentate Pastoral Board is currently working on with the Retreat and Recollection Committee is the capability building of the Student-Brothers who shall be the first recipients of seminars on servant-leadership and team building which they will in turn share to their future audiences.

From the middle of 2020 and the whole of 2021, retreats and recollections were given online. While the team preaching set on the summer of 2022 is still uncertain, it is still a blessing because this pandemic helped the brothers realize that they can reach not only those who are in the Philippines, but also those who are in other parts of the globe such as Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

Unity and brotherhood strengthened in the spirit of ‘One Coristado’

Aside from tracing the origins of the Red Wednesday movement which began in 2016 as a project of the “Aid to the Church in Need,” it also emphasized the Church’s unity and solidarity with all the Christians who are still suffering persecution even in our modern times.

IT TOOK more than a year before the Coristado community could go out of their cozy dens due to the pandemic. It is good that the Annual Community Retreat in 2021 was held outside the Studentate – at Caleruega Retreat House, Nasugbu, Batangas.

It allowed the Student-Brothers to change their environment and break free from the monotonous schedule of the Student-Brothers for the last 14 months to refresh their spiritual and

mental health.

Although the retreat marked the end of the formation year, it also marked another formation year's fresh beginning. On the last day of the retreat, elected and appointed heads and members of the Dominican Studentate offices and apostolic groups were inducted for the upcoming formation year.

Furthermore, the newly-elected Decano and apostolic groups presented their projects and plans for the new

formation year. The Decano, for example, expressed that the DSC will promote unity in the Studentate with the slogan "One Coristado."

Despite the difficulties of the pandemic, the Student-Brothers never lost hope. They enthusiastically continued to perform their apostolates, as seen in their projects. The StudentBrothers helped and empowered one another as they faced the challenges brought about by the scourge of the COVID 19 Pandemic.

THIS NEWSLETTER may have sprung from our intention to share to other people our pastoral activities, which is why we came up with a publication that we agreed to call “Punlâ”. In Filipino, we understand the word to signify the sprouts that are about to be planted or seedlings which have just been planted.

“A seed starting to grow always speaks of hope.

With this newsletter, I believe that we are telling the people around us that there is hope and God is giving it by fulfilling his work in and through us.”

Any plant that is about to grow is delicate, and so it requires close attention and special care.

But I believe that this is not the reason why we chose punlâ as the symbol of our apostolic work in the Studentate. It is actually the opposite. We see ourselves as tough and competent enough to engage in our ministries.

Yes, we are preparing ourselves for that period when we become fully grown and capable of doing more for the People of God. That is why using punlâ as our symbol tells us of something deeper within us.

Watching a tiny plant start to burst forth from a seed evokes feelings of excitement. It is like witnessing life coming from what seems to be dead. A seed starting to grow always speaks of hope. With this newsletter, I believe that we are telling the people around us that there is hope and God is giving it by fulfilling his work in and through us.

Message of the Director of Pastoral Formation during the opening of the formation year 2021-2022 As we embark in this new formation year, allow me to share two points that I would like you to consider and which I believe is also important when you perform your duties and ministries this formation year.

First, seek the Lord always.

To seek Jesus must be the driving force in your ministries. There should always be that longing to enter into a much deeper relationship with Him; for He is the reason why we embrace this kind of life and same reason of our apostolic endeavors.

To seek Him means that He is not hiding, rather we should be sensitive enough to identify His presence among us as He constantly reveals Himself in our midst whether in times of difficulty or plenty; whether in our academic pursuits or apostolic engagements.

I hope and pray that this formation year would lead you to long for Jesus more. Sapagkat, bilang mga relihiyoso, mahalaga si Hesus sa ating buhay…at alam naman natin kapag may halaga, hinahanap… kapag mahalaga, iniingatan…kapag mahalaga, mahal!

Second, once you found the Lord, share Jesus. Just like how the apostles discovered the Messiah, those who first encountered Jesus did not waste time to rejoice and brought the good news to their loved ones.

In the Gospel of John, Andrew, a disciple of John the Baptist, upon knowing the testimony of his own master about Jesus, went first to his own brother Peter and said “we have found the Messiah.”

In the same manner, when Jesus invited Philip to follow Him, Philip was likewise so excited and shared his discovery to Nathanael, telling him that, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the

Maybe in the course of your journey together, in executing all your plans and projects, in all the tasks given you in the Studentate, you might stumble upon the Lord. Such epiphany of Christ to us should spur us to tell your brothers that you have seen Him, how He extended His help, his care for you.

You know that in these difficult times, people just need words of encouragement that would bring them hope and validate what they have heard and seen. And that is where our role as brothers to one another enters.

We are reminded by the words of

St. John in his first letter (1 Jn. 1:1): We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands.

He is the Word of life.

And this is what it means to be a brother to each other: That we encourage one another to continue, to persevere, to have the heart to face the challenges of a vowed life. More so, as we give witness to the living presence of Jesus in our lives, we extend our forgiveness, patience, kindness, understanding and even our mere presence in all our undertakings.

And so, my dear brothers, tuloy tayong lahat sa ating paglalakbay, bagamat ‘di madali ngunit hayaan natin na samahan ang bawat isa.

Masarap maglakbay nang may kausap, nang may mahihingahan, nang may makakatawanan at may kaagapay sa oras ng lumabay.

May God bless all our endeavors this year and we pray for each other and be a companion to one another!

The Filipino term “punlâ” not only signifies the seed, but more importantly connotes the act of sowing. This expresses the dynamism of the brothers’ apostolic ministry, rooted as it is in their life of contemplation as students committed to the sowing of the seed that is the ever-fruitful Word: “So shall my word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to me empty but shall do what pleases me, achieving the end for which I sent it,” (Isaiah 55:11).

SIMULA noong taong 2017, lagi na akong nagsisilbi sa Sto. Domingo Church bilang isang Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Naging bahagi na rin ng buhay namin ang palagiang paglilingkod sa Simbahan.

Kaya noong unang pumutok ang balita tungkol sa pandemya, lubha akong nalungkot nang nagsara ang mga simbahan at tanging online Mass lang ang pinahihintulutan. Bukod dito, ako rin ay nagkaroon ng matinding takot dulot ng nakamamatay na virus.

Nagdalawang-isip din ako sa pagpapabakuna dahil sa mga balita na maraming namamatay sa bakuna. Higit sa lahat, labis ang aking pangamba para sa aking mga batang anak dahil ayaw ko silang maulila sakaling magkasakit man ako.

Hindi nagtagal, muling binuksan ang mga simbahan ngunit tanging ang mga nabakunahan lamang ang pinahihintulutang pumasok. Bagamat sabik na sabik na kaming muling dumalo sa banal na Misa, hindi rin kami makapasok sa simbahan dahil hindi pa kami bakunado.

Tuloy ay sa labas na lamang kami nakikisimba. Gayunpaman, tuwing gabi ay

nagdarasal kami ng rosaryo bilang isang pamilya. Hindi kalaunan, dumating ako sa punto na bigla akong nagpasya upang magpabakuna.

Parang naliwanagan ako at sinabi ko sa Panginoon sa aking mga panalangin, “Kayo na po ang bahala sa amin. Malaki ang aking pananampalataya sa Iyo.” Kaya untiunting nawala ang aking pangamba.

Nakumbinsi ko rin ang aking asawa upang magpabakuna. Ang sabi ko sa kanya ay magdasal lang kami palagi at ipaubaya ang lahat sa Diyos.

Nang muling pinahintulutan ang mga Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion na maglingkod sa Simbahan, natuwa ako tulad ng iba pang mga kasapi sa pagbabalik na ito matapos ang kulang-kulang isang taon.

Nabuhayan kami ng loob dahil sa pagkakataon na muling makapagsilbi sa Diyos sa pamamagaitan ng paghahatid ng Katawan ni Kristo sa mga tao.

Kahit minsan ay hindi maiwasang magsiksikan at hindi masunod ang social distancing, sa awa ng Diyos ay malakas at malusog pa rin ako hanggang ngayon. Tunay ngang pinoprotektahan ng Panginoon ang mga nagtitiwala sa Kanya.

Serving God through reading and listening

I VIVIDLY remember a retreat I had many years ago, and it ended this way: “Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men” (Mk. 1:17). Many years after, my 30-day retreat ended with God’s message to me: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15).

I do not know how all these will happen, but I understand my mission: to participate with God’s plan for the world and to draw people closer to God. I do not know the path, I only have trust.

As fruits of my retreat, God gifted me with two avenues: The Ministry of Accompaniment and the Ministry of Lectorship.

Being a lector is God’s invitation for me to serve at His vineyard. I responded to His call.

As a lector, reading the Scriptures daily nourishes my soul; and I have been able to proclaim the Word of God to the faithful by serving at the Holy Mass. The otherness of a lector is giving the self and time to proclaim God’s words, with the prayer that by the grace of God, it will reach the ears

and the hearts of each faithful.

By these means, I feel my relationship with God is also nourished and have grown. It is life-giving for me. The vineyard of the Lord where I am serving is abundant.

The environment is a community of young men who heeded God’s call, struggling to toil, and struggling in prayer until it becomes their way of life, transforming themselves to become worthy servants of Christ.

They dedicate their lives to become priests as a form of serving God, who labor to bring the Church to the people. This is the Dominican Studentate.

The grace of working in God’s vineyard through that friendship is being developed.

Each time that I would see my brothers and they smile at me, I see the face of God smiling—struggling but joyful.

To some, this friendship has developed into a sacred space. I listen to their life and faithful stories patiently and silently and through this, listening became my personal apostolate. I journey with them in prayers.

This vineyard is vast. Full of God’s people that we should reach out like what Jesus did during His ministerial life. The poor around the area where the Studentate reach out to bring them closer to church, closer to God. I, together with our whole Ministry of Lectors and Commentators and the Dominican Studentate, are one in participation with God’s dream and plan for the world: To proclaim the Kingdom of God.

STUDYING amidst the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be difficult. Yet this sentiment is no less felt by those teaching. And for those who engage in both, it is doubly difficult and challenging.

Part of the pastoral formation of the Student-Brothers is the teaching ministry. This is ordinarily given to those who have finished their bachelor’s degree in Sacred Theology, giving them the opportunity to impart what they have learned from their years of studies.

Nevertheless, being in the initial formation, they are still StudentBrothers. Hence, simultaneously studying and teaching, they are brothers who are “student-teachers”.

This makes true the Dominican motto, “Contemplari et contemplata aliis tradere.” After all, studying and imparting its fruits do not come separately and most of the time they go together.

With the onset of the pandemic, everything had to adjust and adapt.

Evidently, the mode of learning and working for the most part had to be done virtually. As StudentBrothers, all of our classes and most of our ministries and apostolates were done in the same modality, especially our teaching ministry.

However, there is a salient difference between being a student and a teacher. As students, online classes could become burdensome inasmuch as disposition is easily affected by the lure of multitasking over the internet and the interactions between teachers and students and among students themselves are quite limited. For these reasons, we as students get easily distracted and lose interest.

But on the other hand, teachers also share many of the burdens. As facilitators of the class, we had to be engaging enough with our approach and activities. During the first online classes, most—if not all—of the brothers who are teaching had the impression that nobody’s listening to them.

The absence of reaction and interaction made all the difference.

Added to that were the countless times when internet connection fluctuates and everything we prepared for results to nothing.

These are only some of the usual scenarios that online learning involves.

Despite all this, teaching still is rewarding not only for the students but for us teachers as well. Having recently finished my bachelor’s degree in theology, I thought I already had the knack for teaching it.

But I was proven wrong.

In fact, I had to go back to the basics by reading through the Catechism of the Catholic Church and some Church documents. It was worthwhile because all the more did I understand and appreciate the Christian faith since I had to teach them to others and not merely as a requirement to be read.

Moreover, teaching theology to senior high school students as well as college students is not so much a theoretical instruction but a concrete application. That is why I had to explain and formulate relatable examples in such a way that I am not merely speculating or theorizing.

What is more interesting is that many of the students were also keen at asking practical questions. I saw how they give deeper importance not only to the “what” but also to the “what for.” They always try to search for the meaning rather than settling for the information.

Studies show that learning by teaching is by far the most effective of all learning methods since it compels the teacher to retrieve what he has previously learned.

He does not only comprehend but appropriates—he makes it his own—the information and lessons he has gained.

Indeed, such is the case with teaching theology since more than the theoretical principles, students seek the significance of these matters in their lives. Without a doubt, it is their human and personal experiences that shed light and concreteness to what might rather be an ideal, speculative, and personally distant theology.

Indeed, the distance brought by the pandemic brings with it a challenge not only in our mode of learning but also in our mode of living. The concreteness of struggle and suffering pervades our world, thus, also eliciting a call to make sense of them in the light of our faith. As C.S. Lewis wrote, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

Pre-Marriage Canonical Interviews: accompanying people towards a life of commitment

TO ASSURE that those who wish to be married in the Church have the proper knowledge, capacity and disposition to do so, couples undergo a canonical investigation.

I consider it a blessing to be able to interview couples as they prepare for the married life. I am astonished at their love stories, struggles and hopes as they shared them with me.

“As the couples declare their resolve to embrace this lifetime commitment, I am likewise reminded to renew once more the profession I have made until death.”

Though the sacrament of matrimony is one of the many things that I gave up as I embrace the religious life, it still inspires me to embrace more my religious vocation.

Such resolve to commit oneself to married life and to start a family as a participation in God’s ongoing work of creation is a mature decision. It is God who will sustain it.

Hence, couples are encouraged to put God at the center of their lives as individuals and as a family later on.

This is likewise true in religious life. As I commit myself to a life of obedience, I can only ask for God’s mercy and that of my community to sustain me in this vocation.

Married life, religious life, or a life of single-blessedness, are not actually too foreign from one another. They are a life of commitment, and the resolve to make a decision to choose among them can only be made by matured individuals.

Will you also answer the call?

Everyone is called to be a preacher of faith, hope, and charity. Everyone is on a pilgrimage to God. We want to dwell in God, speak with God, and speak about God. A scripture reading about the journey to Emmaus is a life experience of struggle and doubt but also of hope because the disciples finally understand their vocation only when they walked with Jesus. In other words, a meaningful journey needs conversation and companionship.

Pagtugon sa Tawag (PST), is an apostolic group of the Dominican Student-Brothers which also serves as the local vocation promotion arm of Santo Domingo Convent in coordination with the Provincial Promoter of Vocations, aiming to accompany young men who desire admission to the Order.

In order to fulfill our sacred responsibility, PST has goals to make the Order of Friars Preachers known in various platforms and to strengthen discernment programs of the Dominican vocation.

This year, PST organizes vocation discernment programs and disseminates vocation promotion materials that can motivate young men to become Dominican religious brothers, both clerical and cooperator brotherhood.

The vocation promotion through social media has a significant impact in the time of the pandemic. PST is responding to the curiosity of the young men by accommodating inquiries in our Facebook page “Dominican Vocations Philippines (Pagtugon sa Tawag)” and giving necessary information regarding the requirements upon entering the Order.

In addition, PST engages in social media by producing infographic materials about frequently asked questions (FAQ) regarding the Order, the Dominican way of life, and the Dominican saints.

The vocation stories of the Dominican priests and cooperator brothers are also featured in short videos with the hope of reaching out to people in many countries through Facebook and YouTube.

The vocation discernment of the applicants is facilitated online by creating a module that involves conferences, sharing of vocation stories, and companionship up to the time when they make the decision to enter the Order.

The Dominican Order of the Philippines is now accepting applicants for the Formation Year 2022-2023. ‘Alab ng La Naval’ inspires faith and devotion anew

Pananaw: Sharing the fruits of contemplation in print and online THE PRINT department of the Dominican Students’ Media Center (DSMC) has continued its publication of “Pananaw”, the daily and weekly gospel reflections of the StudentBrothers.

Other than providing a venue for the sharing of the fruits of contemplation, Pananaw also serves as a training ground for the brothers to hone their skills in the preaching apostolate.

It is a collaborative work of the apostolic group as well as the whole Studentate community to bring good news to the people. The daily reflections are written and printed on a daily basis and posted on the Dominican Studentate bulletin board.

The Sunday reflections are compiled monthly to be printed and posted online for the nourishment of the faithful. The print outs are distributed through the Pananaw kiosk located near the entrance of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary La Naval de Manila.

Since the beginning of the lockdown and the pandemic, the DSMC Facebook page has been very active in publishing the reflections online.

The DSMC hopes to bring these gospel reflections to a greater number of audiences through the social media platforms of the apostolic group.

Through this simple task, the Dominican Student-Brothers fulfill their very identity as preachers of grace and messengers of Jesus Christ to people from all walks of life.

The Pananaw reflections continue to touch the hearts of people and enlighten their minds, following the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: "it is better to illuminate than merely shine, to share the fruits of contemplation, rather than merely contemplate.” Br. Marco Miguel C. Lorenzo, OP

NOT EVEN the pandemic can hinder the faithful from giving honor and expressing their love and devotion to the Blessed Mother. This was very much evident with the successful Alab ng La Naval Online Novena Candle Request which was held during the evenings of the novena days from Oct. 1 to 9, 2021.

This endeavour was carried out through the initiative of KAPATID (si Kristo ang Patutunguhan sa Tulong ng Ina ng Diyos) apostolic group: The Marian propagation arm of the Dominican Studentate.

During the course of the nine days, the KAPATID members and some StudentBrothers took turns in lighting candles in the candle gallery of the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Naval which was afterwards followed by a short rite and a final blessing.

Every night during the festivities, this simple devotion was streamed live via La Naval de Manila Facebook page, together with the intentions of the devotees who took part in the said program online.

Now on its second year, ‘Alab ng La Naval’ is aimed towards fostering a more intimate devotion to Our Lady in the face of the many dangers and challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MUKHA AD staff were also oriented about the basics of counseling through an Online Conference on Counseling with Ms. Catalina Bulalacao, a member of Sto. Doming Parish Ministry of Lectors and Commentators, as speaker.

Ms. Bulalacao tackled how can a MUKHA ADer be a counselor especially during these trying times.

The participants then discussed among themselves how can counseling help or strengthen their own mission as a companion and friend to one another and to the youth in general.

Online spiritual direction: a source of strength in these trying times In March 15, 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Philippine government to stop any community gatherings in order to stem the tide of viral transmission. Not only office work, businesses, and leisure were abruptly halted, but also spiritual gatherings where the faithful could nourish their relationship with God and his community. The Legion of Mary meetings were not spared from this event.

Thanks to innovations and technological advancements made on the internet, people can now gather virtually through social media platforms which offer virtual meetings realtime. These platforms are ventured by the KAPATID apostolic group in order to continue its mission of spreading and strengthening the Marian Devotion among the faithful by facilitating real-time online praesidium meetings among the members of the Legion of Mary.

During weekends, the KAPATID members get in touch with the members of the Legion of Mary at the comfort of their homes and engage in the usual meeting. Prior to the pandemic, the Legion members report their

apostolic activities in their respective places, but because of restrictions on health and safety, these were replaced by virtual spiritual direction facilitated by the friars.

Faith sharing was often practiced during the meeting and the members are fully engaged and proactive in discussing their faith, family, feelings, work, and their devotion to the Blessed Mother. The dynamics of this new setup strengthened the spiritual bond between members of the praesidium and has increased their faith and fervor in loving the Lord Jesus Christ.

This weekly activity has been more than a year now, and even though there might be the possibility of face to face meetings in the future, it can be infused with virtual meetings to increase the participation of members, especially those who are overseas.

‘Mukha-sa-mukha’: MUKHA AD celebrates Christmas face-to-face

“THE BLOOMING of vocations in this time of pandemic is a moment of grace!”. These joyous words were given by the Prior Provincial, Fr. Filemon dela Cruz, Jr., OP, during the welcome remarks of the Online Orientation Program for the incoming postulants for the formation year 2021-2022.

“We are grateful that God’s calling is still echoing in the mind and souls of young men. It is a voice of encouragement to take a step onward into religious life as a Dominican.”

Spanning for a total of three hours, the online event was able to properly orient and inform the candidates and their families regarding Dominican formation and give an overview of the academic formation program in general and the postulancy program in particular.

It also provided a venue to give clarifications regarding religious formation and to address clearly the participants’ queries and concerns

On Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, at 3:00 p.m., the online activity was conducted via Zoom. The Provincial Promoter of Vocations and the Dominican Studentate’s apostolic group Pagtugon sa Tawag (PST) organized the event jointly.

It was also made possible through the collaboration with the Prior Provincial, the Director of Postulancy, the Moderator of PDCIS, the Local Formators and Promoters of Vocation for Indonesia and Sri Lanka, as well as some members of the Provincial Vocation Promotion Team.

Prior to the online program, the Filipino and Singaporean candidates to the Pre-Novitiate had a series of online sessions called “Dominican Vocation Enrichment Activities” (DVEA) which started in June 2021 and was organized by the Provincial Promoter of Vocations as recommended by the Provincial Formation Council.

R&R Coordinator now under DSPB IN RESPONSE to the revised Policies and Acts of the Dominican Studentate General Assembly promulgated in 2021, the function of the Retreat and Recollection (R&R) Committee Coordinator is now transferred under the Dominican Studentate Pastoral Board (DSPB) starting in the formation year 2021-2022.

The office, currently held by Br. Vince Stanley B. Iñigo, OP, was previously under the Dominican Studentate Council (DSC) and was an elected position. However, in the recent Dominican Studentate General Assembly, it was opted that R&R be moved to the DSPB since it primarily involves pastoral work.

The Policies and Acts of the Dominican Studentate is a document that defines and directs the governmental structure of the community in matters that pertain to all aspects of Studentate.

Revised as the need arises, the document is composed of the following commissions: Religious Consecration, Sacred Liturgy, Study, Government, and Ministry of the Word, under which the R&R ministry is specified. E.D. ABOY, OP

AFTER almost two years of not meeting in person, MUKHA AD had their Christmas party on Dec. 19, 2021, for the first time since the pandemic halted face-to-face meetings and gatherings which are essential for the youth ministry.

Following social protocol and health guidelines, the Christmas party was held at the auditorium of the San Pio V building. Attendance during the party was limited. However, it was still an event worth remembering considering that it was the first gathering after a long period of time.

The program of the event took place as follows; the image of the Child Jesus was enthroned by the youngest member of the group Mr. Kurt Azlie Villanueva. It was followed by the Christmas messages of the eldest MUKHA ADer present, Ms. Cherry Rovira, and the message of Mr. Villanueva.

The MUKHA AD CoordinatorGeneral Br. Peter Lynnus Silerio, OP, delivered a moving and beautiful Christmas message, reminding the group of the value of every Christmas celebration and the hope that the

incarnation of the Son of God, who became a lowly child born in a manger, brings.

Furthermore, Rev. Simon Peter Ramos, OP, graced the Christmas party via Zoom and shared a wonderful spirit-nourishing reflection. To add joy to the Christmas party, Ms. Shiela Labor and Ms. Beatrice Lianne Estacio also shared their musical talent.

Games were carried out to add fun to the joyous celebration, and winners received prizes. A sumptuous food, which generous MUKHA AD alumni and benefactors provided, was served.

The on-site participants wished that all could be present to share in the fun and celebration, but some members could not attend for various and valid reasons.

Those who could not participate in the Christmas party joined the group and together celebrated the Christmas Spirit of MUKHA AD via Zoom through the help of the DSMC. The Province is blessed to have a total of 21 incoming postulants – 11 Filipinos, seven Indonesians, two Sri Lankans, and one Singaporean.

The openness of the candidates, along with the hospitality of their families and the warmth of the brethren, was exhibited during the introduction of the candidates, the sharing, and the Q&A. Aside from being welcomed into the Order, the event also became a moment of “letting go” for the candidates as they embrace their vocation to the religious life.

MUKHA AD members participate in the Special Staff Training seminar via ZOOM.

The registration for the online candle request started on the Feast of the Birth of Mary, Sept. 8 and was open until Sept. 30, 2021.

A candle is lit for every prayer request from the faithful who registered through a provided form online.

Apart from this virtual devotional practice, the KAPATID, with the help of other Student-Brothers, also distributed rosaries and stampitas to the faithful during the course of the La Naval festivities.

The Student-Brothers stationed themselves at the entrance of the Sto. Domingo Church while giving the sacramentals to the faithful entering the Shrine before the start of the Novena.

This endeavor was realized through the generosity of some lay collaborators who selflessly made in-kind or cash donations for the printing and purchasing of rosaries. Br.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15: 5).

MUKHA AD officially opened its formation year with the theme “MUKHA AD LInKED: Staying Together, Connecting Stronger, and

Getting Closer”.

Inspired by the verse from John 15:5, the chosen theme signifies that not even a global pandemic can hinder the youth in strengthening social solidarity, creating camaraderie with members of the church, and journeying together in faith.

The program, which was held on Oct. 17, 2021, via Zoom, served as a venue to welcome the group’s newest members. To formally open the event, the current Coordinator-General, Bro. Peter Lynnus Silerio, OP, delivered his opening remarks which was then followed by inspiring words from the former Coordinator Generals.

The highlight of the program was the talk of the special guest, Rev. Fr. Christopher Garinganao, OP. He shared the core purpose of MUKHA AD; how each member is invited to become co-laborers in the vineyard of God given that the origin of this apostolic group was inspired by the face of Christ and it was modeled after the Dominican Spirituality.

DSPB publishes first manual for pastoral activities A MANUAL of operations and procedures has been drafted by the DSPB to facilitate the organization and execution of the different ministries of the Student-Brothers.

The forty-five-page document specifies the different offices and character of the DSPB, the nature of the apostolic groups, and the brothers’ pastoral involvements, including a copy of the letters and forms required in carrying out their ministries.

As a response to the last Provincial Chapter’s call for pastoral synergy (ACP Calamba 2021, Acts 149) the manual was created in order to integrate the apostolic activities of the brethren into a single document which clarifies their tasks and the process by which they should accomplish them.

This is the first ever manual of

operations to be published by the DSPB which is primarily responsible in upholding and developing the apostolic life of the brothers in formation.

Before the manual was made, the apostolic groups only had their individual charters and projects which they update and revise every once in a while. In addition, other ministries like teaching, retreat and recollection facilitation, pre-marriage canonical interview, and spiritual direction were only specified in the Statutes and Acts of the Studentate.

The Manual of Operations and Procedures serves as an avenue for the Student-Brothers to be directed in making organized and well-documented projects so that efficiency and consistency may be sustained in their apostolic endeavors. E.D. ABOY, OP

KADAUPAN & UST-Theological Society hold Salamanca Process webinar KATARUNGAN ng Diyos ang Ugat ng Payapang Adhikain (KADAUPAN), together with the UST Theological Society held an online webinar titled “The Salamanca Process: A Dominican Approach to Theological Reflection and Mission.”

The webinar, which took place via Zoom on Nov. 27, 2021, aimed to raise awareness about the foundations and origins of the Salamanca Process and promote it as a method for academic research.

In his opening remarks, Fr. Dexter Austria, OP, who is the adviser of the Theological Society, encouraged the participants to learn and put into practice the Salamanca Process as they continue in their academic pursuits.

He emphasized that the event is a venue to further the conversation between preachers, theologians, and peoples of different walks of life, responding effectively to everyday situations of society by providing a bridge between God and the world.

Fr. Michael Deeb, OP, who delivered his talk titled “Origins and Scope of the Salamanca Process” all the way from South Africa, emphasized that this way of doing mission is not the whole of the justice and peace activities of the Dominicans, but is primarily a theological task, a methodology of how they do their studies.

Fr. Deeb, who was a delegate to the United Nations for Justice and Peace and who served as the Order’s General Promoter for Justice and Peace from 2014 to 2020, said that the Salamanca Process encompasses the brethren’s activities on how they should use their studies and research to respond to the issues and questions of the people they encounter, especially regarding the realities of suffering in the world and of the people around them.

The second part of the webinar was given by Mr. Leo Ocampo of the Institute of Religion titled “Exploring the Application of the Salamanca Process in Research.” He used the term, “Salamanca-New World Process” to emphasize the role of the mission areas in the development of the said method.

One of the highlights of his talk involves the use of the Salamanca Process as a Teaching Framework: Study, Research, Analysis, and Action. From this, the Dominican-Thomistic Education by Design–Signature Pedagogy of UST was born and is currently in use in the Institute of Religion.

In his closing remarks, Fr. Rodel Aligan, OP, the Dean of the Faculty of Sacred Theology, urged the participants to have an open mind, adding that the Salamanca Process may not be the only method available , but is exemplary in making theology in dialogue with the law and the promotion of social justice. In his opening remarks, the Director of Pastoral Formation, Fr. Lauro G. de Dios, OP, reminded the beneficiaries that Jesus Christ is the best gift that one can receive for Christmas and that the Dominican Studentate community only asks for their prayers in return.

The joint project, spearheaded by Katarungan ng Diyos ang Ugat ng Payapang Adhikain (KADAUPAN) and Masiglang Ugnayan ng mga Kabataang Hinuhubog sa Anyo ng Anak ng Diyos (MUKHA AD), replaced the annual “Aliw Bata” for the second time since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Due to the decreasing number of COVID-19 cases in the first week of December, the beneficiaries were permitted to receive the gift packages in person.

However, in order to facilitate a smoother flow of the giving of goods and to avoid mass gathering, the two barangays were given separate time slots for the reception of gifts.

From 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., family members of Bgy. Tatalon were able to receive their gifts. Soon afterwards until 11:00 a.m., families from Bgy. Sto. Domingo were given their gift packages. The gifts for the famulos or employees were distributed during their Christmas party.

At the end of the program, the long efforts and toilsome preparations proved worth it, as the last of the masked beneficiaries leave with grateful eyes while the brothers retreat to the Studentate after having witnessed the spirit of Christmas.

This new set of members under Batch 32, whose ages range from 18 to 33 years old, was invited to be part of the apostolic group and were given the opportunity to deepen their Catholic faith while journeying with their MUKHA AD family.

This annual MUKHA AD celebration is a reiteration of how all members are connected to Jesus and each other. It is a constant reminder of how the group can serve as a friend of every youth in seeking God’s grace and kingdom.

And this year, it has emphasized how each of us is LINKED and we are LIKE Christ. ms. sheila mae Labor
