Grade Three Students of Dasmesh Punjabi School, Abbotsford participated in Mathematica Centrum Contest on April 15th, 2015. Two students Gurarmaan Dhillon and Keerit Gill finished 21st out of total 7414 participants from all over Canada.

Both these students won the top prizes at the provincial levels as well. They were awarded medals for their accomplishments. Out of total 292 schools, Dasmesh Punjabi School finished at 13th position in Canada and at 2nd position in BC.

A caller reported finding a duffle bag full of firearms and a box containing ammunition in an outbuilding on the property. APD Patrol Division officers arrived on scene and seized 8 SKS semi-automatic rifles with magazines in a black duffle bag, along with 34 boxes of .762 ammunition and 10 additional magazines in a cardboard box. The investigation into these firearms, magazines and ammunition is continuing.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism:

“That is why we have joined our allies in a broad international coalition to fight the so-called Islamic State (ISIS). It is why we have provided our law enforcement and security agencies with significant new resources, legislation and other tools to fight terrorists and keep Canadians safe. The brave men and women of our military, our security agencies and our local law enforcement are the frontline that stands between peace and order, and fear and turmoil. We thank them for their vigilance and dedicated service.

“Thirty years ago today, in June 1985, a terrorist attack took place that killed all 329 passengers and crew members aboard Air India Flight 182. On this sombre anniversary, we stand in solidarity with the friends and families who lost loved ones in that heinous attack and honour those lost. On this sad day, let us also remember all those who were victims of such senseless acts of hate and empathize with the families left to mourn.

“On days such as this, I cannot help but cast my mind back to the Canadians who perished in Air India Flight 182 and in the World Trade Center attacks, to last year’s cowardly murders of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, and to the many terrorist activities that have been foiled by the vigilance of our security agencies. 6 important tips to keep eyes safe from the sun

f you’ve ever felt the pain of sunburn on your skin, the feeling of sunburnt eyes is just as uncomfortable. To avoid discomfort and protect the eyes from the long term effects of sun damage, follow these six tips suggested by doctors of optometry: 1. SPF. SPF. SPF. Always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 25 on your face, and pay special attention to the area around your eyes.

2. Wear sunglasses year-round. More than 90% of ultraviolet rays penetrate through the clouds. Even when it’s overcast, your eyes are heavily exposed to UV rays. Plus, they reflect off of surfaces like snow and water.

3. Channel your inner movie star.

Bigger sunglass frames will provide more protection from the rays. Check with a doctor of optometry to make sure the lenses are both UVA and UVB blocking—after all, not all sunglasses are created equal.

4. Wear a wide-brimmed hat. It will cover your face from the sun.

5. Choose UV-blocking contact lenses. In combination with sunglasses and a hat, UV-blocking contact lenses can protect your eyes from up to 90 per cent of UVA rays and 99 per cent of UVB rays. Ensure that your brand has the appropriate level of protection.

6. Avoid man-made light sources.

Tanning lamps or welding sources, for example, emit harmful UV rays.

Whether it’s with tinted goggles or simply by closing your eyes, be proactive and protect your eyes from harmful light sources.

Rhea Anderson, a doctor of optometry, explains: “Although there can be immediate symptoms from UV damage to your eyes, many long-term effects can start out symptomless, including cataracts, macular degeneration or eyelid cancer. It is important to get your eyes checked regularly and keep an eye out for those harmful rays all year long.”

A Brief MLA Report by Simon Gibson

t is a privilege for me to represent constituents of the Abbotsford-Mission riding in the British Columbia legislature.

We are now entering the second half of a four year term and I have been kept busy serving on a variety of committees including Finance and Government Services, Public Accounts, and Treasury Board, which is perhaps the most important government body.

In addition, I am a member of the board of the Pacific Northwest Economic Region, based in Seattle, which is a “Cascadia” model drawing together five US states, and the western provinces and territories for the good of our region Earlier this year, the Premier honored me with a new appointment as Parliamentary Secretary for Independent Schools. There are approximately 350 such schools province-wide with a total enrollment of some 80,000 students (which is greater than Surrey, the largest public school district).

I have already been “on the road” visiting a number of schools, both in the Greater Vancouver area and on Vancouver Island.

Peter Fassbender, the Minister of Education, and I have known each other for 30 years so it is great to be able to work with him. I attend virtually all the ministry senior management meetings, at his request.

I continue to see my work as a significant opportunity to be of service to citizens. My constituency assistants, Jean and Joyce, attend to constituent problems and advocate to government and Crown corporations with a variety of issues. In many cases, I will pursue a matter directly to the Minister if there is not a satisfactory resolution.

Communication with provincial government can sometimes seem daunting to residents: our office

is always available to facilitate contacts with the right department to achieve a prompt response.

In the Legislature this spring it was a privilege for me to honor Dalip Singh Gill, a former district education officer from Punjab. Dr. Gill is very well known in Abbotsford-Mission as the “pioneer” principal for Dasmesh Punjabi School. Dr. Gill was awarded an honorary PH D. by the University of the Fraser Valley.

May I take this opportunity to wish readers the very best for a wonderful summer. My wife, Joy, and I look forward to meeting many of you informally at the various seasonal functions throughout the community.

July session to debate LNG project agreement legislation The B.C. government intends to recall the legislature July 13, 2015, to debate legislation that would enable the project agreement signed between the Province and Pacific NorthWest LNG, Finance Minister and government house leader Michael de Jong announced today.

“The company has met its commitment to ratify the agreement we signed, which establishes the path to a final investment decision on the project,” said de Jong.

“Now it’s for the government to address our commitment, which will see the public release of the PDA and the introduction of legislation that would both ratify this agreement and enable future agreements with other proponents.”

The proposed project also requires a positive outcome from the federal environmental assessment process, as well as a strong commitment to continued constructive engagement with Coast Tsimshian and other First Nations. The Province will continue to work with First Nations and the proponent as they work to achieve the highest environmental standards, including the protection and enhancement of the fish habitat.

Developing an LNG industry in British Columbia will result in some of the largest private-sector investments in the province’s history, stimulating significant economic activity throughout the province.

Furthermore, there are a

number of religious schools that complement the places of worship very well. Thus, it is a true reflection of the Canadian Mosaic.

This Highway to Heaven is a great attribute to Richmond’s respect for diverse cultures and faiths. To their credit, City of Richmond, Richmond School District and various other agencies are doing an excellent job in promoting mutual understanding and intercultural harmony.

Yep, the man who is super thrilled and busy working with some of the leading actresses of Bollywood has actually gotten his eyebrows plucked by Katrina Kaif. Harper Government secures access for fresh B.C. blueberries to China

he Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture, and the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, and Member of Parliament for Abbotsford today announced that Canada and China have agreed to sustained market access

for fresh British Columbia blueberries.

Chinese inspectors are expected to visit Canada this summer to carry out a pre-shipment inspection and to authorize the first shipments of blueberries to China. Once fully implemented, the Cana-

dian blueberry industry estimates new access to this important market to be worth $65 million annually.

Curb appeal can enhance your bottom line

Ms. Jones, a potential buyer, drives by your home prior to viewing it with her Real Estate Professional. The red brick, the large windows and the two-car garage looked very attractive in the properties listing. However, she can’t avoid noticing the patchy lawn, missing shingles on the roof, the chipped window frames, soiled siding, and kids’ bicycles and wagons stacked three-deep on the side of the garage. The front door is a foul shade of violet. Now she knows why that shot never made it into the properties listing pictorial. She shakes her head and drives away, without even getting out of her car. She calls her Real Estate Professional and says she would like to look at another house.

It’s always a good idea to improve your home’s outside appearance. In fact, it’s essential to increasing the price you will receive for your home. A prospective buyer will determine, in

seconds, whether your home is a prospect.

Set the stage with good curb appeal Curb appeal is the overall impression that your home creates when viewed by a potential buyer. It is the quality that gets buyers’ thinking about your home as their home. As soon as a potential buyer sees your home, they will begin creating an emotional connection, be that good or bad, with your home. A buyer begins to form a picture in their minds. Could I live here? Can I maintain my current lifestyle in this home?

How much work do I have to do? After viewing a home that looks cared for, on the outside, they will want to move inside. Be sure to consider the following areas when enhancing your curb appeal.

Put out a new, inexpensive welcome doormat. Clean any outdoor furniture and replace old and worn cushions. If you have a pet that lives in the backyard, be sure to advise your Real Estate Professional in advance.

Even better, arrange for pet boarding when showing your home.

When you pay attention to the curb appeal of your home will likely spend less time on the market. Uncompleted repairs could lengthen the time needed to sell your home. The first impression that a buyer makes of your home is important.
