What to know before getting your first credit card

It can be exciting to get a credit card for the first time. It provides the opportunity to build credit—something that most young adults don’t have. As a new credit card holder, here are some things to remember so that you make your credit card work for you:

Credit can be costly. If you can’t pay back the full amount you spent each month, it’s a warning sign that you may be spending more than you can afford. Avoid paying interest by paying off the entire balance of a credit card every month. Interest charges can add up quickly, and you may get into debt and hurt your credit score. Bad credit can follow you for years to come.

Take advantage of online resources, like the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s credit card payment calculator, which lets you see how long it would take to pay off a credit card if you don’t pay the full amount each month. This can help you understand exactly how interest works.

Build credit using a secured credit card. If you’re uncertain about getting a traditional credit card, consider starting with

a secured credit card. To get one, you’ll have to give your bank a security deposit to cover the credit limit. If you don't make your payments, the bank can use your deposit to pay the money you owe.

These types of cards can help young adults build a good credit history without the risk of defaulting.

Know your rights. Banks have to follow certain rules regarding your credit card agreement. For example, they must clearly set out the key features of the credit card in an information box. This includes information like the interest rates, annual fees and other charges.

Your bank may make changes to the features or the terms and conditions of your credit card. If so, they must provide you with the details in writing at least 30 days before the changes take effect.

By understanding how your credit card works, using it responsibly and knowing your rights, you can better manage your money and start building a credit history that will lay a solid foundation for your finances.

All- new 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander GT S-AWC Review.

The very popular Mitsubishi Outlander SUV receives a refresh for 2025 with updated styling and a slew of new features. The SUV is available in both gas engine and hybrid PHEV versions. A Yamaha audio system is a new addition to the standard-features list, while Mitsubishi also revamped the center console for additional storage. There are also changes to the suspension and sound proofing for a smother, quieter cabin. Mitsubishi says the Outlander is Canada’s best-selling all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid electric with an estimated 61 kilometres on EV mode.

The new Outlander PHEV looks great with its new confident restyle and aggressive front end with smart chrome trim.

Power is provided courtesy two engines, as a PHEV (Plug in Electric Hybrid) with a hybrid unit and as a conventional gas-powered engine version. The more expensive PHEV unit uses a specifically tuned, Atkinson cycle 2.4-litre combustion engine paired to the new more powerful integrated twin electric motors. there is an all-electric driving range of 61 km, well up from the 39 km the previous Outlander PHEV offered.

We previously tested the PHEV Outlander and for this review were

offered the Outlander gasoline engine version. This is powered by a standard 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder DOHC engine that makes 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. It pairs exclusively with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Technology and infotainment wise, the Outlander comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen. It has standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and both smartphone-mirroring systems can connect wirelessly. An eight-speaker Yamaha audio system is standard, and a high spec 12-speaker Yamaha system is optional. Additional available infotainment features include wireless device charging. The new interior also offers a wonderful new brown/tan leather upholstery that is top of the segment with upscale diamond quilting on the first and second-row seats and door panels. The centre console has also been reconfigured, with new controls as well as cup holders that are offset to accommodate two larger drink containers.

Pricing wise, for Canada, the new Outlander range starts with the base ES version at $35,598. The higher up the trim ladder and you gain more luxury features, technology and con-

venience items. The SE version costs $38,298. The LE is $41,298 and the SEL model starts at $43,998 and the GT is $46,498. The top version has the audiophile quality 2-speaker Yamaha sound system Ultimate audio system as well as a host of luxury and comfort features. We tested a high spec GT S -AWC model with premium two-tone package for a final cost of $47,398 plus $1,800 destination and handling charge.

The Outlander has improved the materials for 2025. The interior looks, way more upmarket for its segment than its competitors. There is a nice design theme, with tasteful accents and high -quality material, plastics and textiles throughout. Of particular note is the wonderful quilted seats and door panels as found on the mid and upper tier ranges. Technology and comfort feature include an available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a head-up display. In terms of interior space While the second-row seats are roomy for adults, the third row has very limited legroom. However, the Outlander has few competitors in this segment that can boast seven - occupant capacity.

The Outlander comes standard with driver-assistance basics such: Standard forward-collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert and as automated emergency braking, blindspot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. The higher trims have more advanced features including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. automated emergency braking and available adaptive cruise control.

The Patrika

On the road, the Outlander’s 181 horsepower gasoline engine has enough power for everyday driving despite the CVT transmission. Tweaks to the suspension and steering make for greater control even with the bigger wheels and tires fitted. Different drive modes for various terrain and roads can be selected via the dial on the centre console. The CVT is not as refined as it could be, but there are no real issues. The ride is composed and handling surprisingly crisp. Additional sound-deadening material mean a quite composed ride and cabin ambience. Canada Transport rates a fuel economy of rating of 8.9 L/100 km overall, and 9.8 and 7.9 L/100 km urban and highway, respectively

In summing up- the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander has a large comfortable high-quality cabin with impressive materials, ergonomic design, and finishing. There is excellent attention to detail and wonderful upscale touches like the exquisite quilted and embossed leather seat trim. Overall, the driving in this new generation is much improved. Let’s not forget the excellent Mitsubishi warrantees for powertrain, body, and roadside assistance service. Expect a long line of pre-orders for the very impressive PHEV while the Gasoline engine version is still a great buy, and less expensive. A great buy for Canadian families everywhere. Highly recommended.

2025 Mitsubishi Outlander GT SAWC as tested - $49,198

Managing money: Essential tips for post-secondary students

Juggling school, work and everyday life can be hard, especially when money’s tight. Whether you're managing student loans, trying to stretch a part-time paycheque or just learning how to manage money for the first time, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

Here are some simple steps you can take to help you budget better, manage your debt and start building a solid financial foundation:

Know what you owe. Start by building an understanding of your student debt—how much you’ve borrowed, who you owe and what the interest rates are. The National Student Loan Service Centre is your go-to hub for tracking federal loans and exploring payment options.

tools, like the one offered by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, to make things simpler to manage.

Prioritize needs over wants. When your budget feels tight, focus on the essentials first. Look for student discounts and campus resources to help stretch your dollar further, and look critically at your expenses—be honest with yourself about what you can cut until things improve.

Start repaying early (if you can). Making even small loan payments while you’re still in school or during the grace period can help lower your overall interest costs. Setting up automatic payments helps keep things on track and can make it easier to manage your obligations.

Workers Wanted: Welder & General helper good wages, must speak English, knowledge of Punjabi will be an asset

Budgeting is your new bestie. Budgeting isn't about cutting off all your fun, it's about knowing where your money goes. Start by listing all your sources of income: part time jobs, scholarships, family support and grants. Track monthly expenses like rent, groceries, transportation, tuition, books, entertainment and dept repayments. Take advantage of online budgeting

Build good credit habits. Pay your bills on time. Avoid unnecessary debt. Keep your credit use in check. Good credit now can open doors later, from renting apartments to financing future projects.

By taking small, thoughtful steps, you can gain more control over your finances and set yourself up for long-term stability and confidence.

Fraser Canyon Hospital Enhances Emergency Care with Generous LifePak Defibrillator Donation

Author: Dr. Lakhbir K. Jassal

Fraser Canyon Hospital received a generous donation that significantly strengthens the hospital’s capacity to provide immediate and life-saving care during cardiac emergencies.

This state-of-the-art equipment is crucial for hospitals, especially those serving rural communities, enabling medical teams to deliver timely and effective interventions when every second counts.

According to the team at Fraser Canyon Hospital: “this vital piece of equipment plays a critical role in providing timely and effective care during cardiac emergencies. The support of Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation directly contributes to enhancing patient safety and outcomes, and we are truly grateful for this continued

commitment to advancing health-care at our hospital”.

The new LifePak defibrillator elevates the hospital’s ability to respond to critical medical events, ensuring residents of Hope have access to the highest standard of emergency cardiac care close to home.

The donation was facilitated through the ongoing efforts of Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, an organisation that works tirelessly to secure resources that enhance patient care and support the hospital’s operational needs.

Individuals interested in supporting innovative equipment and healthcare advancements are encouraged to contact Dr. Jassal at: Lakhbir.Jassal@fraserhealth.ca

The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation raises funds for vital equipment and programs funded or endorsed by the Fraser Health Authority. They serve the communities of Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs.

$162,800 awarded to research mitigation of Avian flu on the BC Poultry Industry

The Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) is pleased to announce that a grant of $162,800 has been made to support the S.P.R.A.W.L. (Sequencing of Poultry Related Avian Influenza Virus for Windborne Link) Project from this year’s Agricultural Enhancement Grants Program.

This program, offered through a partnership with the City of Abbotsford, has been offering matching grants to Abbotsford’s agricultural industry since 2012. Over the years, ACF’s Agricultural Enhancement Grants Program has provided over $1.6 million in grants to ensure the long-term sustainability of the local agricultural sector, in all its forms.

In 2025, ACF paused the regular grant application cycle in order focus on a single significant issue plaguing Abbotsford’s poultry & egg industry. By partnering with the Government of BC’s Ministry of Agriculture, the University of BC, and interest holders in the poultry & egg sector, ACF leveraged the granting funds available this year with Genome BC to fund a $325,000 project to research mitigation of Avian flu across several sites in Abbotsford and Chilliwack. ACF’s investment will allow the inclusion of up to 12 sites in Abbotsford in this research.

“Abbotsford’s agricultural sector faces a number of threats such as climate change impact, declines in pollinators, and viruses

such as Avian flu,” says Areni Kelleppan, ACF Executive Director. The ACF Agricultural Enhancement Grants Committee felt that it was, “time to look at leveraging our funds with other partners in the province for bigger impact and this was the year to do it.” As a result, ACF connected with the Government of B.C.’s Ministry of Agriculture to learn about industry projects where ACF funding could ensure Abbotsford was included as part of demonstration or research on these kinds of broader issues.

“The impact Avian flu has had on Fraser Valley poultry businesses, farming families, and the broader community, has been devastating, and research to identify how the virus is transmitted is critical for preventing future outbreaks. The proposed research project will help us learn whether wind plays a role in Avian flu transmission among poultry farms.” said B.C. Minister of Agriculture and Food, Lana Popham. “This project demonstrates the partnerships, spirit, and importance of agriculture in Abbotsford, and how valuable farming is to our provincial food security and economy.”

The next round of ACF’s Agricultural Enhancement Grants Program will resume in 2026. For more information on this or any of ACF’s other granting programs, please visit abbotsfordcf.org.

How to react to someone’s allergic reaction

Even if you don’t have food allergies yourself, chances are you know someone who does—and in an emergency, your quick action could save a life.

According to Food Allergy Canada, more than three million Canadians report having an allergy to at least one food, which is the most common cause of anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction.

“Being prepared isn’t just for people with allergies. It’s for everyone around them,” says allergist and immunologist, Dr. Harold Kim. “Reactions can happen at school, at a dinner party, even in a grocery store.” Be in the know

The first thing to know is how to recognize the signs. Severe allergic reactions often start suddenly and can show in a variety of ways, such as dif-

ficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling of the lips or throat, hives, vomiting or dizziness. Sometimes, symptoms seem minor at first but can escalate in minutes. That’s why acting fast is critical.

It’s vital to know when to use an epinephrine auto-injector. It should be given at the first sign of a reaction that involves the airway, causes a drop in blood pressure or affects more than one body system, such as both the skin and stomach.

To use an EpiPen, remove the blue safety cap, press the orange tip firmly into the outer thigh—through clothing is fine—and hold it in place for about three seconds. It’s important to stay with the person after injection as the effects of epinephrine can wear off and there’s a chance of a second reaction. Seek medical assistance or go to the emergency room after using an epinephrine auto-injector.

Archway Food Bank Now Supporting 6,000 Clients Monthly as Food Insecurity Rises

The Archway Food Bank continues to respond to rising food insecurity, now serving 6,000 clients each month. This number has gone up from an average of 3,500 clients in 2022, highlighting the ongoing and growing need for supplemental food assistance in Abbotsford.

“In the last three years, the number of people coming to our Food Bank for help has almost doubled,” said Rebecca Thuro, Manager of Food Security.

“We’re seeing a greater number of families and individuals from all walks of life who simply can’t afford to keep up with the rising cost of living.”

According to Food Banks Canada, nearly 1 in 4 people living in Canada live in food insecure households, with more than 50% of Canadians one pay cheque away from needing to use a food bank.

The Archway Food Bank relies on the generosity of individuals, businesses, organizations, and fundraising groups to help keep its shelves stocked and programs running. With less than 1% of funding coming from government sources, grants and donations are relied upon to meet the growing needs of our community.

While the need remains high, financial donations typically decline during the summer months, making it more difficult to meet the ongoing demand.

“Summer is one of the hardest times for food banks; with people away on vacation the donations tend to significantly slow down,” said Thuro.

“Our community has always been so supportive, but the shelves are going bare faster than we can fill them,”

said Cindy Walker, Manager of Philanthropy.

To help meet the current demand, the Food Bank has released its Most Needed Items List for August which includes the following items: canned beans, canned tomatoes, canned meat, and cereal.

Community members are encouraged to drop off donations at the Archway Food Bank, Archway Community Services, and the following local grocery stores: No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, SaveOn-Foods, and Otter CoOp.

“You can also help your neighbours with a financial donation that the food bank

can stretch farther by buying in bulk,” said Walker. To contribute, please visit AbbotsfordFoodBank.com/donate.

Organizations who would like to set up a fundraiser or food drive can email foodbank@archway.ca for more details.

BC Battles Back for Overtime Victory Over Hamilton

The BC Lions survived a heartpounding overtime battle to edge the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 41-38 on Thursday night. Nathan Rourke engineered a late fourth-quarter comeback drive, giving BC a narrow lead before Bo Levi Mitchell answered for Hamilton, setting up a gametying field goal in the dying seconds. In overtime, the Lions’ defense delivered the decisive blow—forcing Tim White to fumble—before Sean Whyte calmly drilled a 20-yard field goal for the win. BC improves to 4-5 on the season, while Ham-

ilton falls to 6-3. BC’s attack roared to life when it mattered most. Rourke’s precision passing and timely scrambling fueled the comeback, while the run game provided the balance to keep Hamilton’s defense guessing. Rourke finished 24 of 40 for 408 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, while adding 28 yards on two rushes. Justin McInnis caught eight passes for 159 yards on 12 targets, and Ayden Eberhardt made the most of his three catches by racking up 120 yards. James Butler carried 14 times for 85 yards and a

The Lions showed tremendous character in bouncing back from adversity throughout the contest. After falling behind multiple times, Rourke and the offense found ways to respond, culminating in the dramatic overtime victory that keeps their playoff hopes alive in the tough Western Division.

Rahul Sharma is making history and inspiring a generation as the first Indo-Canadian goalie

Rahul Sharma is making history and inspiring a generation as the first Indo-Canadian goalie to don the team Canada jersey at the prestigious Ice Hockey Classic. Born and raised in North Delta, British Columbia, Rahul’s raise from local rinks to international arenas is a story of passion, perseverance, and breaking new ground in a sport where South Asian representation is still rare. Rahul began his junior hockey career with the Surrey Knights, spending his first two seasons in the PJHL, where he laid the foundation for his goaltending success. At 19, he was traded to the Aldergrove Kodiakas, continuing to develop his game and proving himself as a reliable presence in net.

Eager to push his potential even further, he moved south to join the Bellingham Blazers in the USPHL, where he thrived and elevated his game against high-level competition.

In the 2024-25 season, Rahul took the leap to professional hockey with the Hudson Valley Venom in the FPHL. Not only did he become

the youngest goalie in the league, but he also recorded his first pro wins and led his team in total wins – a remarkable debut in the pro ranks.

This offseason, Rahul was traded to the Danbury Hattricks, a Connecticut-based FPHL team, where he’s set to take his game to the next level.

Now representing Team Canada at the Ice Hockey Classic in Australia, Rahul’s journey marks a powerful milestone –not just for himself, but for the entire South Asian Community. As a trailblazer, he embodies the growing diversity in hockey and serves as a role model for aspiring athletes everywhere.

Rahul Sharma’s story is more than just hockey. It is about breaking ceilings, shattering expectations, and proving that with resilience and heart, history can be made – and written –by those bold enough to chase it. He has won :

Province provides first report on community-based primary care services

As part of the Cooperation and Responsible Government Accord 2025, the Province and BC Green caucus have released the first of two reports outlining key findings from their assessment of B.C.’s primary care system.

“Since 2018, our goal has been to ensure that more people in B.C. are connected to the care they need, when and where they need it,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Health. “This report is an important first step in our work to make the most of existing resources, identify ongoing challenges and better plan for the future.”

This first report provides an overview of investments in B.C.’s primary care system since the launch of the Primary Care Strategy in 2018. It highlights significant actions taken to expand primary care capacity and accessibility. Since 2018, nearly 750,000 people in British Columbia have become newly attached to a primary care provider. As of June 2025, 76% of people in B.C. have a longitudinal primary care provider.

“The transparency and detail in this report mark an important step forward for B.C.’s health-care system — and it’s just the beginning,” said Jeremy Valeriote, MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky and BC Greens interim leader.

“From this common understanding, health-care experts, policymakers, patients and the public can now discuss evidence-based recommendations to improve health-care access across the province. But numbers alone don’t tell the whole story. Phase 2 will build on this work by incorporating expert advice for concrete steps to meet our commitment to help communities build more community health centres to better serve primary and preventative care needs of British Columbians.”

To support the continued implementation of B.C.’s Primary Care Strategy initiatives, including primary care networks, urgent and primary care centres, community health centres,

First Nations primary care centres, Foundry and family physician- and nurse practitioner-led clinics, the Province has committed over $672 million for 2025-26. This builds on more than $579 million invested in 2024-25.

A final report, focusing on an assessment of the barriers affecting the expansion and effectiveness of B.C.’s primary care system – particularly on community health centres – will be released publicly in fall 2025. The intention of the final report is to help shape future policy and funding approaches to strengthen community health centres in B.C., and the primary care system as a whole.

Province strengthened services, supports for people, while building B.C.

B.C. supported people through high costs and climate emergencies, and ended the fiscal year 2024-25 with a deficit lower than expected.

“While our work to improve our fiscal position is underway, it is clear that, despite challenging economic conditions, this government is making progress on the things that matter to British Columbians,” said Brenda Bailey, Minister of Finance. “We are investing in B.C.’s future through creating opportunities for good-paying jobs that will create the wealth we need to fund the services people rely on.”

In fiscal year 2024-25, the Province invested in strengthening the healthcare system through building on B.C.’s 10-year Cancer Action plan, increasing the health-care workforce and matching approximately 229,000 people with a family doctor.

As part of easing costs for people and families, more than 1,000 new child care spaces were created on school grounds, a $400 tax credit was introduced for renters and more than 13,600 homes were delivered through the Homes for People Action Plan.

Through B.C.’s capital plan, the Province spent a record $10.4 billion on roads, hospitals, schools, post-secondary housing and other infrastructure. This included the Mills Memorial Hospital replacement in Terrace, the Broadway Subway, Victoria high school and student housing at postsecondary institutions throughout the province, from Castlegar and Vernon, to Abbotsford and Courtenay.

In 2024, B.C. launched its first call for power in 15 years, resulting in 10 new renewable-energy projects that are estimated to generate as much as $6 billion in private investment and

create as many as 2,000 jobs annually during construction.

Budget 2024 investments are helping B.C. communities better mitigate the effects of climate-related disasters, while a new Disaster Resilience and Innovation Funding program is supporting First Nations and local governments to strengthen their defences against natural and climate-driven hazards.

Public Accounts show B.C. ended the fiscal year with a $7.3-billion deficit, $564 million lower than forecast at Budget 2024, as higher revenues outpaced increases in expenses.

Higher revenue was largely due to improved investment earnings and higher commercial Crown earnings at ICBC. These gains were offset in part by an increase in expenses as additional spending under statutory authority

addressed necessary costs, such as wildfires and emergency response.

B.C.’s unemployment rate averaged 5.6% in 2024, lower than the national average. As the Province supported people through climate emergencies and high costs, taxpayer-supported debt increased by $23.7 billion. B.C.’s taxpayer-supported debt-to-GDP ratio ended the year at 23.2%, lower than most other provinces.

“We will continue to make the tough decisions necessary to make sure every dollar we spend has the greatest impact in the lives of British Columbians,” Bailey said. “We’re building our province’s position as the economic engine of a stronger and more selfreliant Canada, and moving forward with major projects that put people to work, grow the economy and support strong communities.”

Any hectic activity that has just started to You are in a good position to make some final decisions on something you may have first considered late July to mid August. The position of somebody else may be clearer now, particularly if they decide to bring something to an end. If this does happen it can make it easier in some way when it comes to normal routines in life.

Whatever you had to rethink when it comes to putting things in place since mid August will now allow you to be clear of mind to late September when it comes to something that might have been first discussed late July to mid August. You can now make decisions that please you. Don’t be tempted to spend too much though.

Someone else can be very straightforward as to what they either like or expect from you. Be careful you don’t read into this more than is being offered, particularly if there is an expectation for you to take on responsibilities or to put things in place. Make decisions up to late September that will keep you in control of your finances.

Whatever financial decisions you may have first considered from late July to mid August can now be looked at more thoroughly, especially in relation to the best actions to take to be able to move forward. You need to be able to satisfy your own priorities, which may not necessarily fit in with the expectations of somebody else.

You are in an excellent position to be able to make decisions to late September that will take your life forward. You can feel as though you have greater personal choice or some control at last. There might be a second stage to this from January to April next year and for this reason it could be wise to ensure there is some flexibility.

Focus on anything you are determined to develop more for your own independence in the future. You can realise that contemplation alone will not move things forward. From now to early September you need to look at the commitments that would need to be taken on. Doing this in stages will help you to get used to the changes.

You are in a good position to come to realisations regarding any situations where you might feel as though you are taking on more than is reasonable on a regular basis. This is more about making decisions to bring matters to an end where commitments attached will have an inhibiting effect on possible future accomplishments.

Having absolute confidence about how you stand on any matter will engender respect from others, even though they may not fully agree with you. This could result in clarity when it comes to commitment and support, which may have been an issue from late July to mid August and was left hanging. Be mindful of the obligations you take on.

You could come to the realisation, from now to late September, that it is better to scale down ideas you might have had late July to mid August to be able to take these things into the future successfully. Others might have bigger ambitions but you can be happier with small steps, allowing you to have a feeling of better control.

You are in a position to late September to contemplate future plans and possibilities that you may have wanted from late July to mid August but could not finalise. You have the opportunity to engage with others and get a response. This could also have a lot to do with leaving the past behind up to 20th November so you can move on with a new life direction.

Something you thought had become evident since mid August where someone else’s decision making is concerned could again become more unknown to late September. It could be that they need to withdraw to make final decisions. These could involve taking your priorities into account as well as generating some sort of pleasure in life.

Something that wasn’t made perfectly clear or finalised by somebody else between late July and mid August can now return to late September where final decisions need to be made by them. It can be up to you to ensure they do not avoid responsibilities that could leave you with too much to get properly organised or put into place.

Canadians of South Asian heritages contribute to vision for provincial museum

More than 16,000 people of South Asian heritages in British Columbia have provided input for a provincial museum that educates, preserves and celebrates the richness of Canadian South Asian histories, traditions and cultures.

“The broad participation from British Columbians of South Asian heritages demonstrated how important it is for communities to see their cultures and stories reflected and recognized in a museum,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “I want to express my gratitude to both individuals and organizations for their time and the thought put into their contributions. We heard that it’s important to these communities to protect and pass down their traditions, languages and histories through a museum. We are committed to continuing to work with these communities on next steps.”

The Province recently concluded a 12-month engagement to explore the

diverse range of perspectives for a vision of a museum and then reported what are shared values and what is unique and distinctive between and within communities’ visions.

“South Asian communities have long contributed to shaping the vibrant, diverse and welcoming B.C. we know today,” said Amna Shah, parliamentary secretary for anti-racism initiatives, mental health and addictions. “As an immigrant of South Asian heritage, I know how meaningful it is to have a place where our history is preserved, celebrated and shared. I am grateful to everyone who participated on the engagement and look forward to continuing our collaboration to create a space that honours our diverse backgrounds.”

Feedback from engagement participants described a museum that serves both Canadians of South Asian heritages and those looking to learn and experience said heritages and cultures. Participants said the museum should

acknowledge and celebrate the many cultures, events and holidays of Canadians of South Asian heritages and encourage community connections. Participants also noted the opportunity to increase understanding about the struggles, contributions and progress of people of multiple South Asian heritages as they have settled in the province.

The engagement included a public survey, online submissions, community-hosted conversations, youth engagement, one-on-one discussions and targeted engagement. The targeted engagement ensured a broad range of voices were captured from smaller heritage groups as well as subjectmatter experts, such as academics and museum professionals. The Province provided $500,000 to help communities organize engagement sessions and report on the input. In total, 46 organizations helped to hold 145 engagement sessions.

The What We Heard report reflects the visions and ideas of the community for a provincial museum. The report is available online.

While the term South Asian is globally recognized, it is not a term that all communities feel is representative or respectful, a sentiment that is getting increased support. The report includes some terms that were suggested by participants during the engagement. The term South Asian continues to be used as a placeholder only.

Quick Facts:

Canadians of South Asian heritages have origins in nations such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, with a diaspora as far-reaching as Fiji.

In 2017, the Province committed to explore the possibility of a museum that focused on the contributions of Canadians of South Asian heritages.

India’s Journey towards Viksit Bharat: 11 years of Development, Progress & Nation building

As India embarked on its fast-paced human centric developmental journey to become a developed country “Viksit Bharat @2047” by the time it completes the century of the independence, the past decade has been exceptional across the national and strategic spectrum. PM Narendra Modi’s call to dispense with the slavish mentality and rise and shine with the mantra of reform, perform and transform has already begun to yield remarkable dividends. Over 1550 archaic and cumbersome laws were repealed and jurisprudence updated. At 130 in 2017 in the Doing Business Index of the World Bank India rapidly moved to 63rd place resulting in significant increase in Foreign Direct Investment. Innovation eco system has produced 1.6 Mn start ups from mere 500 ten years ago with 118 unicorns. From fragile five to become the 4th largest economy in a decade is a remarkable achievement by any standards. According to Bloomberg based on IMF data , China, India and USA are projected to be the three global growth engines from 2025-2030.

India has also emerged as a key proponent of fight against climate change and a spokesman against the ‘Green Apartheid” .India has committed to ‘zero carbon’ by 2070 but by all accounts, it seems target may be achieved much earlier . In 2015 , India along with France launched the International Solar Alliance (ISA) perhaps the most consequential initiative after the NAM movement of the 1950s. A monumental achievement is that 50% of India’s installed electricity capacity now is attributable to non-fossil sources . This is integral to the quest for India’s energy security which is essential for it to continue to remain as the fastest growing major economy in the world. India is converting ambition and aspiration into action. Not only India launched another global initiative ‘The Global Biofuels Alliance’ during the Presidency of G20 in September 2023 but also completed the ethanol mixing targets way before . Same applies to its Nationally Determined Conrtributions (NDCs) where India is the first and the fastest to comply with.

The pandemic had hit the world hard in an unprecedented manner. But India’s response was unique since it was driven by its DNA dictum of ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam’-world is one family . When the powerful countries were hoarding vaccines and medicines for geo political ends, India, not only manufactured its own but even for others from UK and Russia, provided billions of vaccines to over a hundred countries as part of its ‘Vaccine Maitri ‘– Vaccine Friendship outreach. More importantly, it had to cater for the one sixth of the world ‘s population which inhabits India. Since health care became a fundamental priority, India launched the government financed insurance scheme, Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), which is reported to have increased substantially since 2014. This is a government healthcare programme operated on a massive scale. Under AB-PMJAY 345 million Ayushman cards have been issued, and 29,914 hospitals have been empanelled. More than sixty-five million authorised hospital admissions have taken place under the scheme. This has been further extended to include senior citizens above 70.

India is essentially an agricultural country and farmers are the back bone of India and its food security. Hence, even at the Doha rounds of WTO, India has always stood for the cause and interests of large number of developing countries. PM Modi had announced doubling of farmers’ income through various initiatives and reforms at the grass roots level. Some of these include a scheme for soil health cards to all the farmers, National Agriculture Market (e-NAM),Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), and Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)

which provides very low premium for farmers.” The PMKSY scheme, launched in 2015, supports the use of micro-irrigation technologies- which is a crop insurance scheme. No wonder in past decade the food grain production increased from 252 Mn tonnes to 332 Mn tonnes.

Fighting poverty has been one of the biggest tasks that the Indian Government has undertaken. Operating one of the world's largest food security programs, the Targeted Public Distribution System under the National Food Security Act covers 81.35 (Over 800 million) beneficiaries, providing food grains to rural and urban populations. Recent decisions, such as extending free food grain distribution under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana for another five years, exemplify Government's commitment.

Self-Reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) has become the key to ‘Make in India for the world’ and local for global to be part of the global value and supply chains as it emerges as the smart manufacturing hub and services centre of the world. With its zero tolerance to terror policy the indigenous defence systems rained hell on the enemy during the Op-Sindoor action against Pakistan based terror hideouts.

India has excelled not only in space exploration from first ever landing on the southern moon and Chandrayaan to Gaganyaan missions but excelled through its Digital Public Infrastructure (DBI) and Unique Digital Identity Aadhar and exceptionally large number of bank accounts across India for distribution of the benefits and payments directly into accounts .By linking Aadhaar with Jan Dhan bank accounts and mobile umbers (the “JAM” Trinity), the government streamlined

the By linking Aadhaar with Jan Dhan bank accounts and mobile By linking Aadhaar with Jan Dhan bank accounts and mobile numbers (the “JAM” Trinity), the government streamlined the delivery of social welfare programs, reducing fraud and ensuring that benefits reached the intended recipients directly and efficiently. This proved particularly crucial during the pandemic, enabling swift and targeted disbursement of financial aid to those most in need. All these digital tools and Apps and digital public goods have been made available to the world especially the developing countries. AI for All, One earth one health, one grid one world are not mere slogans but policy directives of a resurgent India steeped in its civilizational ethos.

In this fractured world order, India’s sane and value based foreign policy has become robust, resilient and result oriented as it seeks to comprehensively enhance its own power spectrum through strategic autonomy and multialignments entrenching reformed multilateralism and multi-polarity. This was evident recently when PM Modi was again invited by PM Mark Carney to G7 Summit in Canada, despite cooler ties with them, since he felt that it was important to have India at the table. It is increasingly becoming a rule shaper from G7 to G20 to BRICS and beyond. Interest of the Global South is served by example and advocacy and by being their credible voice while pursuing inclusivity and human centric approaches.
