June 2024
Dear Junior School Summer Programs Families,
We are are excited to welcome you to the 2024 Punahou Summer Program and hope this Handbook and Parent Guide provide information to support your child’s transition to this year’s Summer Program. The faculty, administration and administrative Deans look forward to learn and explore alongside your child this summer.
As you read through the guide, you may notice that many of the Summer Programs practices and procedures are similar to current school year practices. Please take some time to review the 2023-2024 Handbook and Code of Conduct which highlights the School’s expectations and policies. The Punahou School Health and Wellness webpage will continue to provide the most up-to-date health policies.
This guide will outline general procedures and routines that attend to community safety as well as acquaint you with information pertinent to each division in the Junior School. As we work to create a safe and healthy learning environment on campus, the effectiveness of our efforts also depends heavily on your willingness to cooperate and support these safety measures.
Thank you for giving your attention to the information in this guide and for your ongoing support of the well-being of our entire community.
With appreciation and aloha,
Jana Fukada ’00 Itagaki, Ed.D. Director of Extended Learning

The continuity allows the administrative Deans to get to know the students in each class and provide a high level of personalized support. K-5 Cell Phone and Personal Device Policy
K – 5 students should not bring personal devices to school at all, including items such as electronic games, tablets, cell phones, smart watches, etc. Students are safe and supervised during school hours and if brought with them to school, these devices must be turned off and stowed away in backpacks during school hours.
While we realize that it is important for parents/guardians and children to be able to contact one another, cell phones or other devices with “connecting” capability, such as smart watches, are not a necessary item in school and are not allowed to be in use. There are office phones available to students in grades 2 – 5 until 4:00 p.m. and there are phones throughout the Omidyar Neighborhood and Kosasa Community available should they be needed in the case of an emergency. Any cell phones and other “connecting” devices must be turned off and in backpacks until the end of the school day. Students are not to use devices to call or send text messages during school hours.
Personally owned devices are the sole responsibility of the student and parents/guardians. Cell phones and personal devices that use cellular data plans are not protected by Punahou’s internet content filter.
PUNAHOU SCHOOL | SUMMER CAMPUS GUIDE: JUNIOR SCHOOL
Grades 6-8 Cell Phone Policy
In alignment with the 2023-2024 policy the following cell phone guidelines will be implemented throughout the summer.
As a family, please review the following updated guidelines with your child:
● As soon as you arrive at school, your cell phone must be powered off and put in your bag.
● Cell phones can be used after school to contact families.
● If your family needs to contact you during school hours, please have them contact the Summer Programs Office at 808.944.5737.
● If you need to contact your family during the school day, please ask a teacher to use the landline phone in their rooms, or ask the teacher to use your cell phone for this purpose.
● Phones can be used for a school assignment, but should only be used under the approval of a teacher during class time and only for the time allotted by that teacher.
● Cell phones may be used during Middle School Supervision.
● If you have your phone out during class or between classes and a teacher, administrator, or TA sees you with your cell phone, please walk over to them and give them your phone so that it can be held until the next break. You are responsible for working with your teacher to retrieve your phone before you leave for the day.
● Repeated offenses may result in your teacher or an administrator holding your phone for the entire school day.
PUNAHOU SCHOOL | SUMMER CAMPUS GUIDE: JUNIOR SCHOOL
Medication Procedures
If medication is needed during the school day, the following procedures must be followed:
● Parent/guardian must contact the Health Center at healthcenter@punahou.edu or 808.944.5776 to arrange medication administration.

Upload Forms Here
● Medicine must be clearly labeled with the child's name, the name of the medicine, and dosage directions in a pharmacy-dispensed container. An extra container can be requested from the pharmacy. Please ensure that the medication is current (non-expired).
● Over-the-counter medications should be provided in the original packaging.
● Parents/guardians are responsible for ensuring that medications are delivered for students in grades K to 8.
● Medications may be dropped off at the main (Thurston) Health Center during business hours (Monday to Friday 7:00 to 4:30 except on holidays) prior to the start of summer school.
● If medications are not delivered prior to the first day of summer school:
○ For students in grades K to 8, please bring the medication (in a labeled, pharmacy-dispensed container or original over-the-counter packaging) in a labeled bag with full name and grade either to the Health Center or to the Summer School Office in Bishop Hall on the first day of school.
○ For Academy (grades 9-12), parents/guardians or students may bring the medication (in a labeled, pharmacy-dispensed container or original over-the-counter packaging) in a labeled bag with full name and grade to the Health Center on the first day of school.

PUNAHOU SCHOOL | SUMMER CAMPUS GUIDE: JUNIOR SCHOOL
Medication Procedures
(Cont’d)
● Self-Carried Medications: A physician may determine that the student is able to self-carry their own medication and indicate this on the Action Plan or Permission for Medications to be Administered form. Students may self-carry their medications according to these guidelines:
○ Over-the-counter: students in grades 9-12. Please contact the Health Center to determine whether your student may self-carry a specific medication.
○ Prescription: students in grades 9-12 may self-carry the dosage of prescribed medication needed for one school day as indicated on their Permission for Medications to be Administered form. Some controlled substances, including narcotics, are not eligible for self-carry. Please contact the Health Center regarding any short-term prescribed medications.
○ Inhaler: students in grades 2-12 must be deemed capable by both the physician and parent/guardian of self-carrying and self-administering. This must be indicated on the Asthma Action Plan, signed by the physician and parent/guardian.
○ Epi-pen: students in grades 7-12 must be deemed capable by both the physician and parent/guardian of self-carrying and self-administering. This must be indicated on the Allergy and Anaphylaxis Action Plan, signed by the physician and parent/guardian.
● Please note that the Health Center recommends maintaining a back-up dose of self-carried medications at the Health Center. If the student does not have their self-carried medication on hand and there is no back-up dose provided, the school will not be able to administer the medication if needed.
● If a student requires pain medication other than Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen in relation to an injury, they should stay home until pain medicine is no longer required during the school day.
