The Variety Show is a tradition that is as old as Punahou Carnival itself. Both events originated in the 1930s, when Punahou’s small-scale “carnival” was put on as a fundraiser for the Oahuan yearbook. The “variety show” was, more often than not, a series of skits and original songs put together and performed by a small group of students at Dillingham Hall.

Today, the Variety Show has evolved into a massive production involving more than 350 students – easily the largest theatrical presentation in the state in terms of sheer number of participants. It’s also a staple of the Punahou experience. I have heard countless hilarious and touching Variety Show stories from alumni of all different age groups. It’s a project that creates memories that really stick with people.

The thing I love the most about the Variety Show is what a wonderful opportunity it is to collectively celebrate the quirky idiosyncrasies of the graduating class. When I first heard the story behind “Bread: The Variety Show,” which was conceived before I was brought on board as a director, I knew the class of 2023 had something really special on its hands. This is a student-written story featuring original music and choreography that celebrates and honors weirdness, and I couldn’t be prouder of how wholeheartedly each one of these students has embraced the process.

Working with this special group of students over the last few months has been a genuine pleasure. They have all dedicated so much time, talent, and passion to this project, and I hope you all enjoy the show as much as I have.
