Letter from the Chairman
Iwould like to ask our readers a favour, but first, in the words of Max Bygraves (for those under 50, he was, depending on your point of view a funny/not funny comedian of the 70s and 80s), “I wanna tell you a story”.
This Christmas, as she has done for many years, a local lady arranged “a happy day for those lonely people on their own at Christmas.” On Christmas Day, she provides lunch for 55 guests who are collected and taken to the Abbey Centre where they have Christmas dinner, entertainment, a visit from Father Christmas, and a ‘goody bag’ when they leave. The lady receives no gain or reward for giving her time and energy to do this. By the time you read this New Year resolutions will have either not started, be abandoned or for the minority be on-going. So why not make a March resolution? It does not involve the giving up of food or drink and may even involve a small amount of exercise, and give something back to East Hunsbury. it could be as simple as picking up litter whilst walking the dog or children to school. Or you could volunteer to help out at the various activities which will be taking place this year in the library and the parks including Gardening Buddies, community Litter Picks, or the Summer Social at the Seaside in August. During November East Hunsbury Remembers, then the various Christmas
activities, plus many more activities weekly/monthly.
You can find details of all events on the East Hunsbury Parish Council website or pop into the parish office where Caroline, Liz, or Jayne can provide more information about volunteering.
If you can’t spare the time on a regular basis then you can still support the events. They are always free to attend and your support means the people who put the events on feel their time and efforts have been rewarded.
Anyway, back to the story. The lady in question is called Pat Johnson and the “many years” I mention above is, in fact, 38! I will not mention the age of the lady but I think you can guess that she is not in the first flush of youth.
The favour? If she can give up her time and energy for so many years, can you give a few minutes of yours? In the words of Tesco, “every little helps.”

The Welcome Space on Wednesdays!
The Parish activity room at Hunsbury Library 10am – 2pm
Wednesdays at the Parish Office – are slightly different to other days…
In a good way!
Whilst our door is open for the community to come in, meet with us, Wednesdays sees our parish activity room transformed. Each Wednesday, we set up the space as your own front room!
The kettle is on, the radio is on, and people can help themselves to a cuppa and a biscuit.
There are magazines and newspapers, board games and a chance to sit and chill out.
The idea was born out of Warm Spaces, which were funded by WNC, to help people during last winter. At East Hunsbury Parish Council, we now intend to keep the space open to the community throughout the summer. Thanks goes to local volunteers who help with this project.
So just pop in, meet up with friends. We are currently looking at requests from residents for using the space for smaller groups, chess club, art sessions etc...
(n.b. one Wednesday per month, we give the space to a new art group. On those days, the Welcome Area will move and be signposted in the main Library room).

Investing in Our Community: Understanding the Parish Council Budget for 2025/26
East Hunsbury Parish Council has a statutory duty to prepare a budget that forms the basis of our precept demand. This funding helps us deliver vital services, organise activities, and maintain facilities for the benefit of our community. Here’s an overview of our plans for the 2025/26 financial year.
What is the Parish Precept?
The precept is the parish council’s share of your Council Tax. West Northamptonshire Council collects this on our behalf, along with contributions for other services like Police and Fire. Your bill will clearly show how much of your Council Tax goes to the parish council.
How is the Budget Decided?
Budgeting for the community’s needs involves careful planning and consultation. We consider current economic pressures, rising costs, and the need to maintain the high-quality services our residents value. For 2025/26, we’ve set a total budget expenditure of £416,331 and a precept demand of £369,181.
What Does This Mean for You?
For a Band D property, the annual contribution to the parish precept will be £106.94 – just 29 pence a day. This small daily amount supports community initiatives, events, and vital services.
Your Voice Matters!
We welcome your feedback and ideas for future initiatives. Join us at council meetings or share your thoughts online – we’d love to hear from you! Together, we can continue making East Hunsbury a great place to live, work, and visit.

History and Views on Borough Hill
Words and photos by Dave Askew
Last quarter as I was typing this article we were being rained on constantly and today it’s weather warnings for wind!
When I give talks to groups everyone tells me there are not any hills in Northamptonshire.
So I thought it would be good to tell you about one of my favourites to walk around the top of, that’s twenty minutes drive from Northampton and you don’t even have to climb to the top as there is a free car park there!
Borough Hill stands near Daventry and is the second highest hill in Northamptonshire. It’s been used by humans for thousands of years and is the site of one of the largest ancient hill forts in the country. Two Bronze Age round barrows are also there and, in 1645, it was used as a base by the Royalist army of King Charles I, in the week prior to the Battle of Naseby.
Today it’s a wonderful Country Park with a flat 2 mile circular route, easy for all the family, with amazing views on all sides.
The ‘Needs to Know’
Borough Hill Circular Walk
Distance: 2.05 miles (3.3km)
Time to walk: Just to walk will take about 1 hour but, as you’ll see, there’s lots of information boards to read & lots of benches to sit on to admire the views
Difficulty: Flat and all on grass paths. There are no stiles. Dogs are welcome and allowed off-lead, however be aware that cattle sometimes graze here
Parking: Free car park on site. what3words: hangs.broke.shirtless
Public toilets: None
In 1925 the BBC constructed a transmitting station on Borough Hill and the masts could be seen for miles around. Transmissions could be received all over the world. Today only one remains, but you can still see the huge concrete support blocks
The hill also played an important role in the development of radar on February 26, 1935 with instruments able to detect an RAF Heyford bomber flying at 6,000 feet through the beam of a short wave BBC Daventry transmitter, proving to the Air Ministry that radio waves reflected from a plane could be used to track enemy aircraft.
The test was so secret that only 3 people were present. The experiment was a success and was considered to be the birth of RADAR, an advance warning system that was crucial during the Battle of Britain.
It’s possible to visit the site where it was transmitted from in a lay-by on Walk 217 – see this on our website www.northamptonshirewalks.co.uk
Over 200 walks we’ve done in Northamptonshire can be found at northamptonshirewalks.co.uk plus all the links to our social media groups etc
The concrete support blocks remain from the BBC transmitter site
Wonderful views can be enjoyed from Borough Hill

New paths have been introduced to enhance your experience, whether you’re a regular visitor, a casual stroller, or someone discovering the park for the first time. Now, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Have you walked the new routes yet? Noticed any improvements? Even if you haven’t visited recently—or weren’t aware of the changes—we still want your feedback.
From March 2025, an online survey will be live, giving you the chance to share your views. Your input will help shape future improvements, ensuring the park remains a welcoming space for everyone. Educational Excellence at East Hunsbury Primary School Work Hard. Be Kind. Believe.
At East Hunsbury School, brilliance is our minimum standard as we believe every child deserves no less than a truly brilliant education.
In previous issues, we have shared some of the enriching opportunities we provide and how we develop our learning beyond the curriculum to ensure that we educate the whole child; however, in this article, we wanted to share our excellent standards and outcomes within our core subjects with you.
Curriculum
Our curriculum is one that we are very proud of and is inclusive by design. It enables every child to achieve highly from their individual starting points and results in children producing work and learning of an excellent standard – last year our artwork was displayed at the National Gallery, as part of their Take One Picture project, and we were even filmed for the BBC One Show as part of our rugby involvement!
As soon as children start with us in Reception their learning begins – children will be shown how to form letters, decode words and understand the value of numbers.
Showcase School for Excellence in Writing
In July last year, we were proud to be awarded: ‘Showcase School,’ status for our work in Talk for Writing – one of only 11 in the whole of the UK. Talk for Writing is a teaching process that raises standards and accelerates progress. It is based on the principles of how children learn and enables children to imitate the language
they need before reading, analysing and then writing their own version.
A ‘Showcase School’ exemplifies best practice in Talk for Writing. Teachers across the country are regularly invited to East Hunsbury to see how we teach writing using the Talk for Writing approach and learn from our brilliant teachers.
Our children simply love writing stories, non-fiction and poetry and the standard of their work is evident in our displays! We have even had anthologies published containing their exemplary work.
Teaching for Mastery in Maths
At East Hunsbury Primary School, we love teaching maths and use a teaching for mastery approach to ensure all pupils develop a deep and sustainable understanding of mathematics regardless of their starting points.
Reading sits at the heart of learning at East Hunsbury Primary school
The outdoor classrom
We are proud to be part of the Enigma Maths Hub and our maths leader is a trained primary mastery specialist who has expertise in the mastery approach of teaching mathematics. This expertise is used to support the professional development of teachers from within our school and, just like our writing, teachers and leaders from schools across the county are regularly invited to come and watch teaching for mastery in action at East Hunsbury Primary School.
Reading Excellence
Reading sits at the heart of our learning and our rigorous phonics programme (Sounds-Write) and carefully developed Talk for Reading curriculum, has meant that 90% of our children, by the time they leave us in Year 6, reach the expected standard in reading (the national average is 74%).
If you visited our school, you would find a welcoming, well-stocked library, led by a knowledgeable librarian; children being read to every day; a 100 Reads Programme and opportunities like author and illustrator visits to further enhance the reading opportunities we provide. We are also proud to share that we reached the final of Usborne Library of the Year where we were nationally recognised for the outstanding work we do teaching children to read and developing a positive reading culture through our library.
Science
Science is also a subject which thrives at East Hunsbury Primary School. We are proud to have developed, alongside other schools in Europe, our unique Science Outside the Classroom curriculum, which puts learning science outside at the heart of its approach. This curriculum enhances our already existing curriculum and we love learning science in our very own outdoor science classroom which really brings the learning alive!
Interventions, Inclusion and Pastoral care
Learning can be tricky and complicated, so we know that in order to get the best from our children we need to know them really well. Therefore, teachers prioritise the relationships they build with their classes and ensure that appropriate and timely interventions are in place.
Alongside this, a dedicated pastoral team are ever ready to provide any additional support that may be needed. It is these things that underpin our brilliant curriculum and ensure that we achieve so highly.
Watch this space!
Later this year, we will be hosting our first ever: ‘Brilliance Exhibition,’ where children will exhibit a piece of work that they are particularly proud of – this is going to be an exciting opportunity for children to learn from others and for us to share their brilliance and our pride for and of them.
Finally, we want all of our children to know just how BRILLIANT they are and that is why we are committed to ensuring that every child receives an excellent standard of education. For us, better never stops and we are excited to see every child in our care reach the highest of standards and be proud of their brilliance as the years progress.
Did you know we currently have limited spaces in Years 1, 2, 4 and 5 - call the school office to book a tour if you are interested in your child joining our brilliant school.
Maths and written work are high on the curriculum
Simon de Senlis – we believe, we achieve, we succeed
As the Headteacher of Simon de Senlis Primary School, I am immensely proud to share the incredible work that takes place in our school community every single day. Recently, we were delighted to receive an 'Outstanding' rating in all areas from Ofsted – a reflection of our unwavering commitment to providing the best possible education for every child who walks through our doors. At Simon de Senlis, we believe that education is far more than just academic achievement – it’s about nurturing the whole child. Our school ethos is rooted in care, ambition, and a genuine belief in every child’s potential. We aim to create an environment where every pupil feels valued, inspired, and supported to believe in themselves, achieve their goals, and succeed in life.
A commitment to excellence in education
Our teachers and staff are wonderful. Every lesson is carefully planned to build on prior knowledge, enabling pupils to apply their learning confidently in new contexts. From Reception to Year 6, we ensure that every child experiences a curriculum that is rich, engaging, and designed to inspire curiosity. Teachers here don’t just deliver lessons
– they spark ideas, challenge thinking, and instil a lifelong love of learning.
Building solid foundations in early years
For our youngest learners, we provide a warm, stimulating environment where curiosity thrives. In the early years, our curriculum is active and engaging with a focus on collaboration, investigation and play. In addition, the exceptional teaching from our Reception staff means that children quickly develop the key skills required to be confident readers, writers and mathematicians setting them up for success as they progress through their school journey. Children in the early years are carefully helped to settle into school and become happy, confident learners.
Exceptional behaviour and leadership
One of the things I love most about our school is the outstanding behaviour of our pupils. They are respectful, kind, and show a genuine enthusiasm for learning. Routines and expectations are clear, and this helps to create a calm and purposeful
learning environment. We also encourage our older pupils to take on leadership roles, acting as role models for younger children and contributing positively to our school community.
Learning beyond the classroom
We are constantly looking for ways to enhance and develop our curriculum with further experiences. We have just begun our annual Shakespeare unit, working closely with the RSC, local artists, musicians and drama teachers to develop a wider knowledge of the play. In the coming weeks, children in Year 4 will visit The National Gallery in London to work alongside the curators unpicking the wonderful art on show and then developing their own interpretations with an artist-in-residence back at school. In March 2023, we were thrilled to open our environmentally friendly outdoor classroom, which was officially unveiled by the Mayor of Northampton. This incredible space, powered by solar panels and a wind turbine, allows us to take our curriculum outdoors, creating hands-on learning experiences that bring subjects to life and foster a love of nature and environmental awareness. Our programme for pupils’ personal development is carefully considered and
rooted in our established school values of building resilience, responsibility and aspiration.
A thriving partnership with families
Our school’s success is built on the strength of our community. We work closely with parents and families to ensure that every child is supported both at school and at home. I often hear from parents how much they appreciate what we do, with many describing Simon de Senlis as a “wonderful school.” Hearing such positive feedback means the world to us.
Looking to the future
As Headteacher, it’s a privilege to lead such a dedicated team of staff and incredible pupils. Together, we’ve created a school where children are not only achieving great things academically but are also developing into confident, caring, and well-rounded individuals.
At Simon de Senlis, we’re not just preparing children for the next stage of their education – we’re preparing them for life. And I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved together. The future is bright, and I’m excited to see what we’ll accomplish next.

Food waste and climate change
Did you know that in the UK we waste a quarter of all the food and drink we buy! This is responsible for producing 18 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year (imagine 36 million standard sized water butts full of petrol on fire) which contributes towards climate change.
Food Waste Prevention
One of the best things we can do for the environment and our wallets is not waste our food and drink. An average family can save £1,000 a year by reducing their food waste.
Some top tips to reduce food waste include:
1. Planning ahead – by planning your meals and sticking to a shopping list you will avoid overbuying food and use up food you already have – remember to check what food you already have before going to the shops.
What goes in your food waste bin?
2. Know your dates – remember that a ‘Best Before’ date only refers to the quality of food, but most items are ok to eat after this date. ‘Use By’ dates refer to safety and food should not be eaten after this date.
3. Make the most of your food – correct storage of your food can extend its life by weeks (or months in a freezer), your fridge should be below 5oC and you can freeze any food right up to the ‘use by’ date – ideal if your plans change.
4. Perfect Portions – cook only what you need and if you do have any leftovers they can be stored in the fridge for another meal another day. You can take the guess work out of portion sizes by using the food portion calculator on the love food hate waste website.
The Love Food Hate Waste website has lots of great hacks and guidance for making the most of food at home and saving you money.
Find out more by visiting: www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
Food Waste Recycling
Any food that can’t be used (for example tea bags, bones, plate scrapings etc) or does become wasted, should be placed into your food waste bin and put out for collection each week, on the same day as your other bins (currently unavailable to most flats but will be available to all by April 2026).
More and more people in West Northamptonshire are recycling their food waste when they see how easy it is.
Visit www.westnorthants.gov.uk/foodwaste for more information or to order a free food waste bin.
Did you know?
recycling your food waste, rather than putting it in your rubbish bin, saves the council, and therefore you, around £100 per tonne – money which could be spent on other services.
all food waste bins are provided free of charge (an indoor caddy and an outdoor bin) and are collected every week.
you can use any bag to line your indoor kitchen caddy, including plastic.
food waste caddy bags are now stocked at all WNC libraries and are just £1 a roll (30 bags).
food waste is processed into green electricity and compost, which fertilises local farmers’ fields
reducing and recycling your food waste is one of the best ways to lower your carbon footprint and fight climate change.

orthamptonshire Carers are a registered charity supporting unpaid carers across and within the Northamptonshire county border.
Working in partnership with North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) and West Northamptonshire Council (WNC), we are embarking on a ‘Roadshow’ of ‘One Stop Shops’ for carers across Northamptonshire, funded by the Accelerating Reform Fund.
The purpose of this roadshow is to help people living in the community who support people with disabilities and long term health conditions to identify themselves as ‘carers’ and to encourage them to come forward for support and information. This is to help carers keep themselves well and to help prevent them from becoming isolated without help and support.
Carers are those (without payment) who can give as little as an hour a week supporting someone who is ill or has a long term health condition up to those who are in a 24 hour, 7 days a week caring role.

½ cup (100g) dark chocolate chips
½ teaspoon fine salt
Additional icing sugar for topping
Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan/350°F). Lightly grease and line a 20cm square cake tin with baking parchment.
In a jug mix the eggs, oil, water and vanilla together. In a separate bowl add together the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, icing sugar, chocolate chips and salt, and mix until well combined. Make a well in the centre and add the egg mixture, folding it in until combined. Pour the batter into the tin and level. Bake for 40 minutes. Check it is cooked; a skewer should come out with just a few crumbs. Don’t overbake, the brownie will firm up when cooled. Cool completely and turn out onto a chopping board. Use a serrated knife to trim off the edges, then cut into 18 (6 x 3) fingers. When cut, sift some icing sugar on the top.

To join this rewarding service, we ask that you are: -
n age 18 or over
n a confident caring person with empathy for older people
n able to stay calm and offer reassurance
n living locally in the current service area
Your visit could include: -
n making a drink
n packing an overnight bag
n a welfare check following a primary care visit
n contacting a family member or friend
n providing reassurance and a listening ear
n liaising with your Service Manager as required
Please note this role will not involve any manual handling (lifting or moving) of people. We are sure that you will enjoy volunteering with us, and that you will always feel supported and safe. News from King Richard Court
All who visited The Court over the Christmas period will have seen the fantastic decorations produced by a few very gifted members of staff. They would not have been out of place on Oxford Street, London. Thank you for the hours of work you put in.
Our Christmas Bazaar and Coffee Morning was very well supported and enjoyed by residents and their families, as well as a number of local people. We raised the fantastic sum of £640.
A very interesting and informative talk was given on Lamport Hall. This is to be followed by a talk on Delapré Abbey.
A brand new event was a visit by the Saint Benedict`s Bell Plate Ringers. How fascinating it was, to see and hear a recognisable piece of music played by them. This was followed by a comedy act by Cog and Sprocket. Another very enjoyable evening.
The Hunsbury Ukulele Group came for an evening of delightful playing and singing of rousing carols. Followed with hot chocolate, cream and marshmallows. This was their third year,
but we no longer have them walking around the Christmas lights in the courtyards but in the lounge.
Random Notes gave us an afternoon of delightful, Christmas music.
We then had a complete change, with a production of the pantomime Mother Goose. This was donated by the family of the late Ivy Clark, in her memory. Greatly enjoyed by everyone, including the grandchildren of staff members. Two exceptionally versatile young ladies playing no end of parts and sang with the most beautiful voices.
Of course we had our Christmas service led by Sue Padington. A very enjoyable and lively service. Her jumper reminded us all that "Jesus is the reason for the season", then and now.
Our Christmas party was declared by some as "The best ever". The entertainer was excellent but interrupted by Father Christmas on his motor scooter and the two Elves, giving out gifts.
