ecision-makers have been given an insight into the potential for Silverstone Park to become a world-class destination for innovation in technology and business growth.

Commercial director Chris Kimber-Nickelson’s has shared the park’s vision with three influential audiences.

He talked with business leaders and MP James Sunderland, who chairs the Armed Forces Select Committee, at a Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce event at Microsoft’s UK headquarters in Reading before a meeting with 30 delegates representing high-tech organisations from 11 different countries across three continents as part of a visit with the Department for Business & Trade.

Silverstone Park also hosted a visit organised by Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership by businesses based at Westcott Venture Park near Aylesbury - a hub for the

During the DBT visit, delegates also toured occupier SAIETTA’s electric drivetrain development facility before being welcomed by Delta Cosworth which, with four premises at the Park, is innovating in high-powered battery systems.

There were further presentations from the Silverstone Technology Cluster - Steve Henson of founding STC member Barclays explained how many businesses in the region have diversified away from motorsport into other high-tech sectors - plus two of the organisation’s business members, The Structural Battery Company and RML. “We need to keep spreading the message far and wide that we are open for business,” Mr Kimber-Nickelson said. “These are opportunities to establish Silverstone Park as being at the heart of OxfordCambridge Arc - there is such good news coming out of the Park, with more to come.”

ould-be entrepreneurs are taking advantage of a new incubation programme of support.

Funded by West Northamptonshire Council and using £40,000 of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Vulcan Creatives is a free, six-month programme run by the Vulcan Works flexible workspace in Northampton. It aims to support people with a business idea by developing the concept further, creating a business plan and teaching the entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed.

The programme will be led

by Vulcan Works’ business growth manager Darren Smith, an entrepreneur who has started and sold businesses and worked in mentoring roles over the last 20 years. It aims to support at least 40 entrepreneurs in becoming enterprise-ready over the next two years and is open to Northamptonshire residents aged 18 and above with an interest in exploring their own business ventures and an openness to new ideas

and growth ambitions.

Mr Smith said: “As a Vulcan Works is a creative hub, this scheme is aimed at new businesses in the creative sector, or those with creative ideas for new businesses.

We are hoping that many entrepreneurs will benefit from this programme.”

Participants need to commit to a minimum two days a week for the programme and to engage in one-to-one business support and coaching activities. The programme expects to welcome its first cohort in January 2024, with applications closing in December. Preference will be given to those looking to set up a creative business.

Participants in Vulcan Creatives will also receive free access to Vulcan Works facilities during the programme.

“I look forward to working with local creative visionaries to bring their business idea to life and guide them through the process of exploring, validating and developing their idea into a fully-fledged

business plan,” Mr Smith said.

“Together, we will cultivate entrepreneurial skills that will enable this exclusive group of Vulcan Creatives to build a like-minded community of business owners who can confidently lead their very own enterprises to success.”

Cllr Dan Lister, cabinet member for economic development, town centre regeneration and growth at West Northamptonshire Council, said: “We are invested in enabling the creation and growth of startups, entrepreneurs and local businesses. We are thrilled to allocate our UKSPF funding

to this scheme that is focused on supporting creative entrepreneurs to start within West Northants.

Police urge firms to join cybercrime resilience forum

J

oin the fight against the increase in cyber crime. That is the message to organisations across Northamptonshire from a business membership group based in the county.

NNBN is encouraging companies, charities and other organisations to become more resilient online by supporting the East Midlands Cyber Resilience Centre (EMCRC), a policeled partnership which safeguards businesses online and operates across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.

Cyber attacks against businesses in Northamptonshire are on the increase. The EMCRC was launched in 2020 and is led by regional police officers working in partnership with universities and businesses with one

aim: To support micro and SME organisations to access the help and services they need to become more resilient to online crime.

NNBN director Simon Cox called on organisations across Northamptonshire to visit the EMRC website in order to find out more about how business leaders can take steps to become more resilient against the cyber criminals.

“It is key that we, as an active membership organisation, support this initiative to help signpost local businesses to key information,” Mr Cox said.

He called on employers to take a look at the free resources available on the EMRC website and to sign up for information packs and free newsletter in order to stay up to date with key

initiatives and information from across the East Midlands.

EMCRC managing director Detective Inspector Colin Ellis said: “It does not matter what industry or sector you are in, taking online security seriously is vital not just for your own business but for everyone else’s too. We are all interconnected online in some way so by better protecting yourself and your own business you are also helping to protect our national infrastructure, our public services, our schools and our charities.

“The cyber resilience centre is here for SME organisations to help them navigate this problem offering free guidance and support to keep things affordable. I am really pleased NNBN are looking out for their members by highlighting our services.”

Covenant signing shows support for the forces

uilding materials distributor Travis Perkins plc has renewed its commitment to support armed forces personnel by once again signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

The company, whose head office is in Northampton, has a long history of providing training and job opportunities to service personnel as they leave the forces and prepare for civilian life.

It has signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant since 2017 and hosted a memorial service for 89 former Travis Perkins employees who served in the Second World War, unveiling a special plaque at the service

attended by Northampton South MP Andrew Lewer, Major General Tim Hyams, chief executive of ABF The Soldiers Charity and guests from the Ministry of Defence, the Royal British Legion and cadet forces of the Navy, Army and Air Force.

Travis Perkins chief executive Nick Roberts said: “As a business at the heart of our communities, we have employed hundreds of service leavers and recognise the great value they bring to our business.

“This resigning of the covenant is an affirmation of our commitment to ensuring the group continues to be

Investment shows way to tackle NHS staff crisis University’s initiative is hailed as I a path towards hitting job targets nvestment in new facilities and technologies has been held up as an example of how the NHS can meet recruitment targets.

The University of Northampton has delivered a series of long-term projects designed to widen access to study subjects that can lead to careers in clinical settings.

Universities UK said that such schemes employed by institutions in the East Midlands are crucial if the country is to meet the objectives of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan published in June to address staffing shortages.

One University of Northampton initiative developed simulation-based learning experiences using high-fidelity interactive mannequins, providing students with hands on opportunities to develop midwifery skills. Students have provided care for Maya, a wireless birthing mannequin to practise skills such as complex emergency management.

Dr Jacob Saranga, dean of the university’s Faculty of Health, Education and Society, said: “The learning experience for our health and social care students at our university is swiftly

evolving to keep at pace with the higher education sector, embedding clinical simulation opportunities that incorporate virtual and augmented reality teaching technologies. We are investing in clinical simulation that is making their class-based learning as close to reality as possible, as Maya is doing for our midwifery cohorts.

“We fully support the recommendations made by Universities UK to transform

healthcare education in this country. With the right conditions, universities like ours can provide the required workforce, expertise and technology needed for the NHS to thrive for decades to come.”

Despite the work being done by universities in the region to contribute to the NHS plan, UUK said challenges still need to be overcome, including a need for higher education to expand health

education capacity, and for a culture shift to take place within the NHS to place more value on students and educators.

UUK is setting out a five-point plan to meet the objectives of the LTWP and support future and existing talent, including in the East Midlands: n Boosting student recruitment; n Increasing the numbers of educators; n Investing in new facilities and infrastructure including new technologies; n Increasing placement capacity;

n Improving learner experience and reducing attrition.

Higher education’s role in the delivery of the Long Term Workforce Plan includes new approaches to education and training to identify future skills gaps, recruiting from more diverse communities, introducing new routes into the profession, new clinical roles and advances in technology.

Boosting the number of staff employed by the NHS in England from approximately 1.5 million in 2022 to around 2.4 million in 2036-37 is also a key ambition.

Firm agrees new fleet management deal

B

uilding materials distributor Travis Perkins plc has agreed a new five-year fleet management deal with the commercial division of Zenith.

It will take over the management of the Northampton company’s fleet of more than 3,000 vehicles.

The agreement is a full transfer from Travis Perkins’

current provider. The new arrangement is due to be phased in from this month.

Zenith is the UK’s leading leasing, fleet management and vehicle outsourcing company.

Its commercial division chief executive Martin Jenkins said: “We have long-standing relationships with the UK’s largest fleets - all of which rely on our

industry-leading knowledge and service levels to achieve business objectives.

“This continues with Travis Perkins plc and I am confident our technology-led solutions will minimise vehicle downtime, boost vehicle availability, and ultimately help to ensure the company maximises its investment in its large commercial fleet.”

Comedian gets serious about upcycling

C

omedian, actor and writer Jack Whitehall has become the latest investor in vehicle upcycling specialist Lunaz.

He joins major institutional names including the Barclay, Dellal and Reuben families in backing the Silverstone-based company, which takes passenger and industrial vehicles at the end of their life and, instead of sending them for scrap, restores them by replacing the internal combustion engine with a clean-air electric powertrain.

Lunaz technicians also carry out technological and wellbeing enhancements before pressing them back into service. The Upcycled Electric Vehicles save up to 80 per cent of the carbon

embedded in the production of the vehicle’s raw materials and the emissions spent on its initial construction.

Mr Whitehall is investing in the business through his green impact fund and presents a newly released video explaining Lunaz’s upcycling and electrification process.

“What’s not to love about the Lunaz proposition?” he said. “Whether futureproofing the world’s best classic cars by making them electric or turning polluting trucks into stateof-the-art UEVs, they are making the planet a better place by reducing emissions and stopping perfectly good vehicles going to scrap.

Landlords left in limbo after EPC U-turn G

Developer starts work on former Weetabix site

C

onstruction work has started on a new warehouse development, located on the eight-acre former Weetabix factory site in Corby.

Earlstree160 is being developed by Copley Point Capital, on behalf of its Block Industrial program, and Pembury Real Estate Ltd. ADI Group has been appointed as building contractor and practical completion is due in Q3 2024.

Ground works will be completed by Christmas 2023 and above ground works will start in the new year.

Pembury Real Estate’s joint managing director James Wright said: “Corby is a key East Midlands market, which has seen significant take-up in the last 24 months, testament to its location for accessing east-coast ports and national consumer markets.”

The Earlstree160 scheme will provide best-in-class logistics floorspace to the highest environmental and sustainability standards, he added.

The warehouse specification includes a 12.5 metre minimum eaves, 16 dock loading, two-level access doors and 50 metre yard. The development will have BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating and will be built using sustainable building materials.

Northampton-based Prop-Search, Cushman & Wakefield and Potter Learoyd have been instructed to seek a tenant for Earlstree160.

Prop-Search director Richard Baker said: “There is a lack of available new stock of this size in the North Northamptonshire region, so this is a

very timely development. It is perfectly placed to accommodate the pent-up demand from occupiers with household names in Avon and Saint Gobain proving that the business park, with its excellent transport links and access to a skilled workforce, is attractive to successful national companies.”

Council acquires former bus depot in £3m deal

C

hurch’s Shoes has completed the sale of the former St James Bus depot site in Northampton to West Northamptonshire Council.

The land has stood vacant to the west of Northampton town centre for more than a decade. Now, as part of the wider extensive regeneration of Northampton, the area has been identified as one which could significantly benefit from redevelopment.

The company and the council have been in discussions for several months since Church’s Shoes opted to sell the site. The council has acquired the site for £3 million and has begun a detailed feasibility report to deliver affordable housing. It also has £300,000 budgeted

overnment’s decision to scrap the requirement to bring the EPC rating of rental properties up to C or higher by 2028 have left commercial landlords in limbo, said a commercial property agency in Northamptonshire.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced in September that landlords will no longer have to ensure their properties carry an EPC rating of C or above for all tenancies by 2028 and for new tenancies by 2025.

However, said PropSearch associate director Samantha Jones, owners of commercial buildings have been left uncertain whether key changes to environmental targets will affect them.

A government consultation two years ago proposed a minimum rating of C or above for residential rental properties by 2027 and of B or above by 2030. It was also thought that owner-occupied commercial property would face a similar requirement.

However, the government has still not published the responses nor clarified the standards that commercial landlords are expected to meet.

Ms Jones (inset) said the industry expects the minimum energy efficiency standard for commercial premises to be raised in the near

future if ministers remain committed to the Net Zero target in 2050. However, the government’s announcement that it no longer requires homeowners and landlords to meet energy efficiency targets by ‘expensive insulation upgrades’ leaves the likely targets for commercial properties in doubt.

“At this stage, there is no indication when the response to the consultation will be available and whether the government will row back on its initial proposals following the recent changes to energy efficiency standards for residential premises,” Ms Jones said. “This uncertainty is undermining energy efficiency investment and adding to the already difficult and costly conditions for many commercial premises.”

Many commercial landlords plan to invest at least £100,000 in improving the energy efficiency of their properties over the next 12 months to meet the proposed EPC standards. Ms Jones said: “Whatever the government decides, Prop-Search is encouraging investors to look beyond the next compliance hurdle towards the broader sustainability transition under way and to consider the efficiencies and opportunities to be created by taking a long-term, strategic approach.”

Business News The new sorter and feeder conveyors at James and James Fulfilment Centre on Brackmills

Automation investment a ‘real game-changer’ for warehouse New system F quadruples ulfilment business James and James has installed a new automated sorting system at its facility on Brackmills industrial estate in Northampton.

The system is in response to growing demand from the company’s 350-plus customers. Sortation had been handled manually but automation will bring greater

capacity

efficiencies, the company said.

The new system includes three conveyor lanes in the packing area which feed

completed order packages on to the sortation system.

Installation was completed in eight weeks.

James and James’ head of operations Stuart Ruchman said: “With over 600,000 sq ft of operational space it provides us with a solid platform to drive the business forward. Once our team were trained on the new system

it became clear what a huge benefit it was going to deliver for the business.”

The automated sorter handles up to 2,500 items an hour, four times the capacity of the manual system, Mr Ruchman added.

The system was supplied and installed by BS Handling, based in Leicester.

Mr Ruchman said: “This new automatic sorter has been a real game-changer for our operations. It has also saved us a lot of money with regard to labour costs, all while giving us better visibility of our orders throughout the process.

“We are very proud of the investment we have made in the Northampton fulfilment centre.” The new sorting system is a big selling point for customers, he added.

“The automated sortation system and conveyors have played a major role in raising the throughput performance and accuracy of this facility.

There is no doubt it will also make a tremendous difference in our ability to handle extreme peaks.”

IT support firm unveils growth plans

E

xpanding IT support company 3RS IT Solutions is to open a new office in Nottingham.

The company, whose head office is in Irchester near Wellingborough, is also creating new jobs as a result of the move.

3RS is already planning to open a third office in Derby next year.

The business was founded in February by IT specialist Stephen Souch, who has worked in the sector for 16 years. The company has grown to employ eight staff and has around 150 clients on its books.

Sales executive Eliza Nowicka has joined the business to cover the Nottingham area.

Mr Souch’s wife Leila, 3RS’s marketing manager, said: “Nottingham is where I am from and I know the area well.

It was always our ambition to expand 3RS IT Solutions further geographically and it makes me hugely proud to be doing this in Nottingham and bringing jobs to the region too.”

Organised by the county’s Chamber of Commerce, hundreds of business people at the Northampton Town Centre Hotel cheered the winners and finalists in a total 16 categories. Two new awards saw Business of the Year and Sustainability awards for businesses based in West and North Northamptonshire.

“The first word that springs to mind is WOW!,” said the Chamber’s group commercial director Sunny Singh.

“A night to remember, bringing together our local businesses and the people behind those businesses that truly make Northamptonshire the place to do business on a local, national and global level.”

reen ideas discussed over a pint… Northampton is preparing to welcome the Congress of the People Planet Pints once more.

The third meeting of a national sustainability initiative set up as an alternative to the COP28 climate change conference in Dubai takes place on December 7 at Brampton Halt, Chapel Brampton.

It creates an opportunity for those with an interest in sustainability to meet and make connections over a drink while sharing ideas on local climate change actions.

It is free to attend and follows events held at Brampton Halt in June and September this year.

PPP founder Adam Bastock said: “COPPP is about starting broad conversations across all parts of the community, not just for sustainability experts but anyone who is concerned or curious. It is simply a chat over some drinks where you can meet others and hear about the work that is happening locally.”

Law firm throws down a new £50 challenge ‘We hope as many businesses as possible sign up’

F

our Northamptonshirebased charities are set to benefit from an Apprentice-style fundraising challenge.

Cynthia Spencer Hospice and the Hope Centre in Northampton have again been selected to benefit from the Franklins £50 Challenge, run by law firm Franklins Solicitors. And now they are joined by two other Northampton-based charities: Northamptonshire Community Foundation and The Lewis Foundation.

The challenge to teams from participating businesses sees each receive an initial £50 seed funding which they are tasked with using to generate valuable extra funds for their chosen charity.

The challenge takes place over three months from February. In previous years teams have organised auctions, cake sales, barbecues and car washes among a myriad of

fundraising ideas to help their chosen cause.

Four charities based in Milton Keynes will also benefit from the efforts of participating teams challenged

by Franklins’ office in the city.

“We are excited to be working with eight local charities who do amazing work in our communities and rely on public support to help make this happen,” said Franklins partner Andrea Smith.

The Franklins £50 Challenge began in 2018 and has raised more than £100,000 for local charities. Ms Smith said: “We hope to see as many local businesses as possible signing up to take part for 2024.”

Northamptonshire Community Foundation will use funds raised on its behalf towards its Rural Community Needs initiative, launched in June with a target of £200,000.

“We know from our research that there are people

within Northamptonshire’s rural communities who are experiencing rising levels of homelessness, social isolation, the burden of meeting the rising costs of everyday costs fuel or food and the choice at times of whether to heat their homes or feed their families,” said the foundation’s head of giving and development Dean Jones. “We are delighted to have been selected as one of the designated charities for 2024.”

Lorraine Lewis, chief executive of The Lewis Foundation, added: “More than ever, due to the cost of living crisis, the people who are diagnosed with cancer who we support in hospital are struggling to afford the basic essentials they need, in addition to home comforts.

“This challenge will be a fantastic opportunity for businesses to work together and think outside the box to

1. Construction Industry What we did: we acted in the share sale of a group of companies which provide end to end services regarding tender, design and installation of utility networks for housing developers. We negotiated the Share Purchase Agreement, Disclosures and property and employment aspects of the transaction.

2. Cosmetics What we did: we acted for the sellers on an international acquisition by a French-based company of a UK target.

There were tight timescales in the transaction and complex due diligence and contracts to accommodate the foreign buyer. We also dealt with specific and complex disclosures pertaining to intellectual property.

3. Construction Industry What we did: we acted for multiple inter-generational sellers in the demerger of their group to separate three distinct aspects of their business: (a) building merchants; (b) garden centre; and (c) property investment.

We subsequently acted on the sale of the building merchants in a multi-million pound share sale.

4. Construction Industry What we did: we acted for the holding company in the group restructure of four existing companies and three new companies which we incorporated to effect the transaction. The transaction included a share for share exchange, new articles of association, a capital reduction demerger, distribution in specie and transfer of several properties. The main trading company was subsequently sold for circa £11m.

5. Veterinary Services What we did: we acted for a corporate group of four companies in a capital reduction demerger. The restructure included the incorporation of four new companies in order to separate the trade. We prepared the documents for a share transfer with deferred consideration with conditional payment dates, a share for share exchange, share allotment and class right variation, a dividend in specie of property, property transfer and two capital reduction demergers. There was also security documents negotiated as a part of the transaction.

6. Construction Industry What we did: we acted for multiple sellers on a share sale. The transaction included deferred consideration, a completion accounts adjustment based on the financial position of the target as at completion, security and retention provisions all of which were negotiated by our corporate team.

7. Automatic Testing Industry What we did: We acted in a retirement sale for multiple sellers in this multi-million pound transaction. The sale was to an international buyer and included a purchase price adjustment based on the company’s financial position as at completion but also an earn-out provision based on company performance. Our property team also negotiated new leases and we attended to complexities surrounding a loan repayment as a part of the transaction.

8. Manufacturing Industry What we did: We acted for a holding company in the restructure of a group of companies within the manufacturing sector. This was in preparation for a subsequent trade sale and included incorporating several new companies, extracting the property and trade and grant of new leases to a trading entity.

9. Engineering Industry What we did: We acted for the holding company in a complex corporate restructure of an engineering group, which included a partial management buy-out (MBO).

This involved setting up multiple new companies, extracting the property and demerger of the existing trading business. We also issued loan notes and security for deferred consideration and worked alongside our property team on granting new leases to the trading entity.

10. Compliance Testing What we did: we acted for the sellers in the sale of the entire issued share capital of a supplier of compliance testing services to a national group. The transaction included initial consideration plus earn-out based deferred consideration.

11. Product Distribution What we did: We acted for the sellers in the sale of the entire share capital of their company being a specialist distributor of flooring products to a PLC buyer.

The transaction included initial consideration as well as revenue linked earn-out deferred consideration.

Our commercial property team also negotiated new-leases with the purchaser.

12. Warehousing and Distribution What we did: we acted on a management buy-out (MBO) of a warehousing group. The transaction included drafting and negotiating the share purchase documents, which included initial and deferred consideration based on profitability of the group.

14. Garden and Retail What we did: we acted for the sellers in a retirement sale – working towards tight timescales in negotiating the share purchase agreement and disclosure documents.

The transaction was structured to accommodate the buyer’s funding requirements and involved the collaboration of both our corporate and property teams.

15. Logistics What we did: we acted for a minority shareholder and advised of his rights and obligations during a complex group restructure. Due to the history of the target concerned, this involved reviewing multiple layers of previous restructures and group transactions.

16. Design and Manufacturing What we did: we acted in the sale of 60% of a private company’s share capital – this involves more complexities than an entire share sale as not only did we negotiate the share sale documents with initial and deferred consideration on a secured basis but also new Articles of Association and a Shareholders Agreement.

17. Logistics What we did: we acted for the outgoing shareholders in concluding the third phase of a Management Buy-Out (MBO). This particular transaction included complex funding and financial arrangements to accommodate deferred consideration.

18. Agricultural Technology What we did: we acted for multiple shareholders in the restructure of a cutting-edge eco-friendly company supporting provision of water in third world countries.

The restructure included accommodating rounds of fundraising to support the venture.

19. Engineering Industry What we did: We acted on a retirement sale for multiple sellers including both an initial payment and an earn-out provision based on target performance.

20. Printing Industry What we did: we acted for the sale of two companies, one of which was the trading company one of which had the intellectual property used by the target vested in it – each of which was owned by different sellers.

The transaction included a new lease, licence and under lease, deferred consideration, settlement agreements and liaising with multiple accountants.

13. Civil Engineering Sector What we did: we acted on a management buy-out (MBO) for a supplier of civil engineering services. The transaction included drafting and negotiating the share purchase documents including initial and deferred consideration.

Beware the perils of DIY accounting

I

n an age of digital innovation, cloud-based accounting systems such as Xero and QuickBooks have become indispensable tools for small and medium-sized business owners writes Adrian Goodman, managing director of PPX Consulting.

Marketed as user-friendly platforms that empower entrepreneurs to manage their own accounts, these systems have - ironically - introduced a set of dangers of which business owners need to be wary. The attempt to handle accounting without proper expertise can make their accountant’s job more challenging and ultimately cost the business more money.

The appeal of a user-friendly accounting system lies in the idea that even those without a background in accounting can take control of their financial management, potentially saving money on professional accounting services.

While this is certainly true - and these systems have literally changed the landscape when it comes to ‘traditional’ accounting services an understanding of the finer points

of accounting concepts is still a key requirement.

Accounting is not just about data entry. It requires an understanding of accounting principles and treatment rules. What seems like a costeffective solution at first can quickly turn into a financial quagmire.

Instead of saving money, business owners may find themselves spending more as accountants are forced to spend extra time rectifying errors and untangling financial mismanagement.

The very attempt to cut costs on professional accounting services can end up costing the business more in the long run, especially since accountants are often not involved until the end of the year, which leaves a lot of time for problems to build up and fester.

Examples of errors I have seen from clients when they first come to us are: n Net pay, instead of gross pay, posted to the salaries account, thereby understating the salary cost; n Office consumables posted to the

‘Office Equipment’ account, which is a Fixed Asset account; n Corporation tax payments relating to last year posted into this year; n Supplier invoice posted to the system and the subsequent payment posted separately, effectively doubling the cost in the accounts; n Costs classified incorrectly between Overheads and Cost of Sales, leading to incorrect calculation of profit margins.

So what is the solution? After all, many SME business do not have the budget to employ a full-time Finance Director or engage their accountant for day-to-day support.

In my experience, the answer to this is a collaborative approach where the business owner (or the person responsible for managing the accounting system) is educated in fundamental accounting concepts and the accountant is on hand to support with any particularly tricky transactions.

Safety first, warn experts as employees welcome AI

W

orkers in companies across Northamptonshire are unconcerned about Artificial Intelligence replacing their roles, although almost two-thirds happily trust the accuracy of the technology to aid in tasks.

New data from Ketteringbased HR consultancy HR Solutions found that of those polled in a recent survey, 49 per cent of businesses were using AI such as Chat GPT. AI - using computer science for problem solving - is being cited as the ‘fourth Industrial Revolution’ and is a monumental change in technology. HR Solutions has already suggested that if businesses are to remain competitive and have the advantage in a modern marketplace, they must embrace the modern method and ensure it is used ethically and reasonably.

AI has the potential to revolutionise how companies work, the consultancy adds. However it warns of the risks associated with it and urges companies to set out clear parameters for staff.

HR Solutions chief executive Greg Guilford (pictured) said: “There is no doubt that if you use AI correctly, it has the potential to streamline processes and improve performance and productivity. However, as with anything groundbreaking and new, it is wise to

be wary about how it is used.”

Most of those using AI were using it to write business documents or brainstorm ideas, with a third using it to analyse information, the HR Solutions study found.

Ninety per cent of respondents said they thought their own role could be improved with AI and although even more (92pc) were unconcerned about AI replacing their roles, almost three-quarters (73pc) were concerned about how AI might change roles in the future.

HR Solutions held a webinar earlier this year entitled 10 Key Considerations When Using AI in The Workplace and has published a policy and impact assessment for using Artificial Intelligence in Employment. It aims to help business to establish guidelines for AI in the workplace, ensuring firms have the right measures in place to get the most out of AI technology and to remove or limit the risks that are associated with it.

Mr Guilford said: “Our AI policy can be implemented by businesses in order to ensure that the technology is used solely to enhance working practices and also identify and prepare for any potential challenges it may bring.”

Almost two-thirds of those surveyed said that they would trust the accuracy of AI to help with tasks. 21pc believe it would be ethical to pass off AI as their own work.

Constitution revamp gives colleagues a greater voice G lobal chemicals group Scott Bader is celebrating after success at this year’s Business Culture Awards.

The company was shortlisted in two categories and was named the winner of the Best Employee Voice category.

It was also a finalist in the Best International award.

The success comes after a two-year research and internal communications programme that led to important changes to its employee-owned structure.

The international Business Culture Awards celebrates organisations that have recognised the impact great culture has on continuing performance. “This award is a significant milestone for Scott Bader in a crucial year that saw the reevaluation of our company’s governance and structure,” said company chief executive Kevin Matthews. “It is particularly gratifying to be recognised beyond the employee-owned community and the chemicals industry, and this acknowledgment emphasises our commitment to creating a more inclusive, equitable, and democratic way of doing business.”

gifted the company to colleagues in 1951 when he became one of the very first adopters of the employeeowned model in the UK. The company continues to uphold the tradition, said Mr Matthews, by fostering a culture that values everyone’s input and promotes a sense of accountability and inclusivity.

The Wollaston-based company’s award comes on the back of a review of its Constitution - a communications tool that sets out what it means to be an employee-owned business. The company shares were ‘gifted’ to colleagues in 1951 - 30 years after it was founded.

The model protects Scott Bader from ever being sold and allows its members to have a heavy influence on both its commercial and charitable activities.

In 2022, the leadership teams recognised that it was time to bring the Constitution up to date and in doing so give 800-plus colleagues - the company’s ‘owners’ - an even greater voice. “We invited staff and wider stakeholders to help us shelve from our governance and structure what was no longer considered fit for purpose,” said Mr Matthews. “Our ultimate goal was

to give colleagues the opportunity to have their say and to help us amplify everything we are doing to make a positive impact wherever we are in the world.”

Led by a steering group, the business set about ensuring every colleague felt included in how the business moves forward. It appointed an independent representative to uphold industrial democracy across all areas of the business and began an ongoing programme encouraging colleagues to fully embrace ownership of the company.

It has led to greater engagement at Scott Bader’s premises around the world with record levels of participation (83 per cent) at the AGM where colleagues voted overwhelmingly in favour (95pc) of the proposed changes arising from the consultation.

As a result the Constitution has been simplified and a Members’ Guide and new animation created, both of which set out the essence of the business and the ways in which everyone continues to benefit from founder Ernest Bader’s forward-thinking philosophies.

A

ddressing asbestos compliance in the workplace is not just a matter of ticking boxes. Putting the risks associated with asbestos exposure aside, it is about fostering a culture where everyone is aligned with safety objectives.

When individuals are informed, engaged and invested in adhering to safety guidelines, a safer work environment naturally follows.

A common misconception is that having an asbestos management survey in place means you are compliant. Legally, you are still not compliant and true compliance requires so much more.

So how do we become truly compliant and build this safetyconscious culture?

Training The cornerstone of everything. Asbestos awareness training is legally required for anyone who may come into contact with asbestos at work or who influences how work is carried out.

An Asbestos Management Plan A document that details exactly how as an organisation you will manage the risk posed by asbestos. This is not something you can buy off the shelf and needs to be bespoke to you, your industry, your building/ properties and your specific needs.

An Asbestos Management Survey If your property was constructed before the year 2000, you need the

survey in place. The survey will enable you to manage the risks as laid out in your Management Plan.

That is the jigsaw complete and the paperwork box ticked. But how do you integrate this into an engagement strategy that aligns the entire workforce and improves both the safety culture and overall company culture for the better?

Education forms the bedrock of any engagement strategy.

Consistent, lively training sessions explaining the locations of asbestoscontaining materials, the risks they pose and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines can be a gamechanger.

Enriching these sessions with interactive elements such as real-life examples, quizzes and open-floor discussions can make the learning experience not only engaging but also memorable. A good asbestos awareness trainer will do this bit for you.

Communication is the second cornerstone. Establishing clear channels where anyone can voice their safety concerns, ask questions or share suggestions on managing asbestos better is key for engagement. It is about creating a dialogue-centric environment where safety becomes a common language spoken and understood by all.

The concept of safety ambassadors within different teams may seem cliché but it is also a really effective

way to ensure the communication channels remain permanently open.

These individuals can be the go-to folks for anything asbestos-related, ensuring the right information circulates and safety protocols are meticulously followed.

By bringing the engagement down to a personal team level, safety becomes a daily lived experience, not just a policy written in a handbook.

Beyond training workshops, leveraging digital platforms for continuous education and realtime reporting can also foster a culture of engagement and compliance. Providing accessible resources online and creating

forums for discussion can keep the conversation on asbestos safety ongoing.

Evaluation is the mirror that reflects the effectiveness of our engagement strategies. Conducting safety audits, surveys and regular feedback sessions can provide a clear picture of where we stand on compliance and engagement.

Diving into incident reports and spotting any recurring asbestos mismanagement issues can shed light on areas needing attention.

Holding regular review meetings with both management and employees to go over the evaluation findings and find solutions to address any identified issues not

only improves compliance but also keeps the engagement vibe strong and positive. Bringing external experts into these meetings can further demonstrate commitment to the safety of employees as well as provide the technical back-up you might require where individuals remain dubious or confused.

Resistance to new safety measures, a lack of awareness or communication hurdles are typical challenges. Addressing these proactively by creating a supportive environment where safety concerns are discussed openly is crucial.

Being receptive to feedback and adapting strategies accordingly also goes a long way in smoothing the path to compliance.

Fundamentally, fostering engagement is the key to successful asbestos compliance. By nurturing a culture of open dialogue, continuous education, regular evaluation and proactive problem-solving, we are paving the way to a safer, compliant, more harmonious workplace where navigating asbestos challenges becomes a collective endeavour rather than a daunting task.

Man’s best friend... but sometimes not the closest chum for employers

esearch by The Kennel Club shows that 70 per cent of people say dogs alleviate stress in the workplace. 45pc said that dogs in the workplace make companies more attractive to job seekers with dogs. It is no surprise then that, since the pandemic, there has been an increase in the number of employers who allow their employees to bring their dogs into work.

There is no dedicated law which deals with having pet dogs in the workplace however employers should be mindful of their duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

Under the Act employers have a general duty to ensure the

There are some settings where it will be inappropriate to have a dog; for example, in food preparation businesses or settings where there is a higher risk of infection or cross-contamination.

In order to comply with their duties under health and safety law employers must first assess the risks posed by dogs in the workplace. Outlined next are some key risks that employers will need to consider:

n Dogs behave differently depending on the environment they are in and may act unpredictably in unfamiliar places around unfamiliar people. Even ‘good dogs’ can bite if they feel vulnerable or threatened so it is important to ensure that measures are put in place to reduce the risk of injury. n Give careful thought to where the dog will stay during the working day, where it will

sleep, eat, drink and toilet. Make sure that all toys are kept in the dog’s bed or a designated area and ensure that any spills from its water bowl or any ‘little accidents’ are cleaned up immediately. n It is important that dogs and their belongings are not in the way of any fire exits or firefighting equipment. There must be a plan setting out how the dog will vacate the workplace in case of emergency. It is important that

Bhangals’ campaign, which showcased the variety of roles available in the sector and at the company itself.

n an industry that is stereotypically male, Katie Newman is an example of what women can achieve in construction.

The operations manager started out as a client services executive five years ago. She now oversees and improves business processes and inhouse strategies at Bhangals.

“Before I started my career in construction, I had no experience and this can be daunting,” she recalled.

“However I have learned so much in the last five years which has ultimately got me to the role I am in today.”

Construction offers job opportunities based on different skill sets, with plenty of potential career routes, she added. “It also offers the satisfaction of seeing projects come to life and that can feel very rewarding.”

Her experience made Ms Newman the ideal face for the ‘Build A Career at Bhangals’ campaign. She moved into the industry after an approach from a recruiter while she was working for a high-end retailer.

“When I was told it was in construction, I was sceptical as I had no experience in the industry but when the recruiter went into the role in more detail and it being an administrator role, I felt my skills matched and thought it would be a great opportunity. ‘’Going into an industry which is predominately malebased, you worry that you will not be taken seriously or you will be limited to what

Ms Newman now manages the sales and administration team and deals with other elements of the business such as recruitment and staffing.

“A lot of my day involves

embarking on a recruitment drive to offer others the opportunity to progress a career in the construction industry.

Filling the job vacancies will see the company expand its workforce from 25 to 40 – a headcount growth of 60% - by the end of next year.

Operations manager Katie Newman is one of the individuals who shared her story as part of the ‘Build A Career at Bhangals’ campaign.

“The campaign shone a spotlight on some of the opportunities available in the construction industry and gave a flavour of what you can expect working in this sector,” she said.

ollowing in the footsteps of her father, construction was always a likely career choice for Yasmyn Thorneycroft.

“Growing up, I was always around building,” she said.

“We grew up on building sites and I was always intrigued by the start right through to the end of the projects.”

Now 23, Ms Thorneycroft works as an estimator for Bhangals Construction Consultants. She arrived at the firm from a fabricating and welding company, having also worked for a local authority’s building surveys department after completing a business administration apprenticeship.

A career choice inspired by an eye for the exceptional

conic buildings across the world inspired senior estimator Kieran Rollings to join the construction industry.

Mr Rollings, 23, has always been amazed by notable architecture, including the Sagrada Familia, Petronas Towers and Singapore Supertree Grove and was determined to start a career in the sector.

He said: “I have been interested in construction from a very young age and became fascinated about buildings around the globe and how they are constructed.

“Once I left school, I completed a

Level 3 in construction management and the built environment at college which taught me every aspect of the construction industry from civil engineering, surveying, architecture, health and safety and sustainable construction.”

Mr Rollings (pictured) is one of the faces representing the ‘Build A Career at Bhangals’ campaign. He joined the business as a junior estimator after a three-year college course.

“My role within the company is reviewing projects to ensure we maintain high standards for our clients,” he said. “As well as liaising and consulting with clients, subcontractors and suppliers. Every day is different, no project that comes through to us is the same. This also brings new challenges and enhances my learning to help me progress within the industry.”

“Now I work in the industry, I can see that every day is different,” she said. “One day you could be pricing an extension on a family home in London and the next day you could be pricing a school in Scotland.

“You learn so much, not only from the pricing perspective but also from the science behind construction as well as the creative aspects of a building.”

She was the only female employee at her previous employer and, she said, sometimes felt underrated before her move to Bhangals.

Ms Thorneycroft was one of the employees who featured in the Bhangals campaign highlighting the career opportunities available in the construction sector.

“I think people can underestimate you in construction because you are a woman,” said Ms Thorneycroft.

“I think it is a lot easier now than it was five years ago.

There are women at a higher level than me so it is nice to aspire to them and see where my career could take me.”

She is a main provider of training for new starters at the company.

“I enjoy training new starters within the business the most. Whether they are new to the sector and I am training them in the basics of construction or they are an experienced estimator and I need to show them how the processes work, I love to be a part of the business growth.”

s we head towards the end of 2023 and the start of a new year, we reflect on what the past 12 months has brought us and look towards the future. In the world of construction, and especially the building services sector, the emphasis has continued to be energy efficiency and the fight against climate change.

The government has realised that we cannot go on burning fossil fuels so, from 2025, no new homes will be allowed to have mains gas connected to them. There is much discussion about what will provide the heating and hot water in our houses but one technology that is already proven - and Griffiths have been installing for over 15 years - is heat pumps.

It is not rocket science.

The principle behind the operation of a heat pump has been around for a long time.

Heat pumps work in the same way as the fridge in your kitchen, collecting heat from one place (the air or ground) and moving it somewhere else (into your home heating and domestic water systems) using a refrigeration system.

Travis Perkins Group, the UK’s largest distributor of building materials, has announced the findings of a groundbreaking study carried out by Dr Lisa Dorn, associate professor of driver behaviour at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire

and founder of PsyDrive, a company that specialises in accredited training for road safety professionals, research, assessment and interventions for improved road safety.

Travis Perkins, whose had office is in Northampton, runs one of the largest fleets in the UK and has around 3,000 driver who deliver building materials to customers across the construction industry and are often required to drive specialist vehicle types including LCVs and HGVs. Richard Byrne, the

company’s safety director, said: “We will use these findings to guide our driver strategy informing areas, such as policies, intervention, training, recruitment and wellbeing.

“Nothing is more important to us than safety and so, as members of several key transport forums and the leading partner to the construction industry, we will also consider how we can share these learnings more widely to breed best practice and encourage a cultural shift

where drivers feel able to come forward to discuss any life challenges they may be going through and promote more regular training beyond compliance requirements.”

The results of this study were first presented last month by Travis Perkins fleet director Karl Wilshaw and Dr Lisa Dorn at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Annual Safety Forum Conference attended

by CILT patron HRH The Princess Royal.

Dr Dorn said: “It is perhaps no surprise that when we have something on our mind, performance is affected and, as this study shows, stress causes distraction and can impact driver safety. Attention lapses and distractions are a significant cause of crashes.

“The research also concluded that without practise, people experience skill decay, and cognitive skills like decision-making are particularly vulnerable. This has implications for safety when driving for work.”

Peak practice pays off for colleagues

isitor feedback has rated the Heritage Open Days event held across West Northamptonshire in September as the most successful yet.

The survey captured highlights from residents, visitors and attractions.

Many attractions not usually open to the public opened their doors to visitors for the campaign.

Stately homes including Sulgrave Manor, Lamport Hall and Canons Ashby took part, as did buildings of historic interest such as 78 Derngate and Weedon Royal Ordnance Depot and museums and places of worship.

Feedback from the survey revealed that 74 per cent of people felt the event, organised by the National Trust, made them feel prouder and more part of their local community while 87pc said they learned something new about their local area from attending a Heritage Open Days event.

“We are dedicated to growing the visitor economy within our area,” said West Northamptonshire Council’s deputy leader Cllr Adam Brown, cabinet member for housing, culture and leisure. “For many, the event provided a unique opportunity to access places they may have thought were off limits or may not have even known existed.

There was something for everyone and I am delighted that so many local venues took part.”

Heritage Open Days marketing and projects manager Liam Montgomery added: “Heritage Open Days is a colossal community effort - thousands of organisations, community groups and individual volunteers share their enthusiasm, passion and love for the places and spaces they introduce visitors to every year.”

Bring some cheer... Answer festive parade’s sponsor call

owerman magic is returning to Chester House Estate this Christmas with up to 70 tractors setting off from the estate in December in aid of charity.

The decorated tractors travel around and through the estate on December 17. The vehicles will be at Chester House Estate at Little Irchester near Wellingborough between 10am and 2pm, revving up the Christmas spirit before dropping off food parcels for Irthlingborough Food Bank in nearby towns and villages.

An appeal has gone out to businesses interested in sponsoring a tractor taking part in the run, at £500 per vehicle.

This year’s event is raising funds for the Special Care Baby Unit at Kettering General Hospital and the Frank Bruno Foundation, set up by former professional boxer Frank Bruno to provide a safe environment for young people with mental health issues.

The event is organised by Wellingborough business Mowerman Garden Machinery. “We are really proud of this event and want to raise as much as possible for charity,” said owner Stewart GarrettHarvey. “That is why we are appealing to local organisations to sponsor a tractor. Great publicity, great fun and a superb way to spread Christmas cheer.”

Campaign against knife crime wins funding boost

M

easures to tackle violence and knife crime across West Northamptonshire have received funding of more than £94,000 from West Northamptonshire Council and the Northamptonshire Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.

Grants of up to £10,000 have been awarded to voluntary and community organisations for projects promoting community safety, deterring potential offenders and providing support and resources to those at risk.

These include Northampton Town FC Community Trust’s Anti-Crime Ambassador project which will deliver sessions at primary and secondary schools on anti-social behaviour, youth violence and knife crime. The secondary school sessions will also look to develop youth ambassadors.

hree peaks, covering 21 miles in ten hours… The challenge for two colleagues at luxury lifestyle store Bell of Northampton.

And both director Dave Richardson and bathroom and tile manager Parshin Pourmozafari scaled the heights - literally - to raise money for Cynthia Spencer Hospice and the Northampton Hope Centre as part of the Northampton store’s 125th anniversary.

The pair have raised more than £1,600 for the two charities after climbing the three peaks Kinder Scout, Bleaklow and Higher Shelf Stones in the Peak District.

“It was really intense, and the last few miles of the challenge were tough physically and mentally,” said Mr Richardson. “But we were thrilled to raise so much for Cynthia Spencer Hospice and Northampton Hope Centre.”

Their fundraising effort was one of a series of fundraising challenges taken up by Bel of Northampton staff to mark the business’s 125th anniversary. So far, the colleagues has raised more than £9,600.

Boxing Academy have received funding for its Knifes Down Gloves Up programme which provides boxing training for young people who have been through the Youth Offending Service deterring them from carrying knives.

Daventry Youth Hub will use its grant to educate young people aged between ten and 18 on exploitation, youth violence, knife crime and how to deescalate situations. Provision and diversionary activities will

be delivered by South Northants Youth Engagement in Brackley and Towcester.

Lease deal paves way for hospice upgrade

hartered building contractor Steele and Bray has been appointed by West Northamptonshire Council to carry out the second phase of improvement works to 24 Guildhall Road.

NN Contemporary Art and West Northamptonshire Council are working in partnership to transform the historic building into a major new cultural centre in the heart of Northampton’s cultural quarter.

The £4.7 million project will see the five-storey heritage building transformed into a creative community, with a contemporary art gallery, creative studios and public space, to provide a gallery, space for artists and cultural-commercial opportunities.

The second phase of works started on site in October, during which new heating and electrical systems was installed and the expansive upper floors improved.

Steel and Bray are based in Northampton. Cllr Daniel Lister, West Northamptonshire Council’s cabinet member for economic development, town centre regeneration and growth, said: “Once open, 24 Guildhall Road will offer a unique cultural hub in the heart of the Cultural Quarter in Northampton, complementing the ongoing redevelopment of this part of town.

lans for ‘substantial’ investment to upgrade facilities at Cransley Hospice in Kettering are under way after the hospice trust secured agreement from Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to remain om its current site.

The hospice trustees have been in talks with the NHS Foundation Trust for the past five years and say the agreement ensures that patients and families in North Northamptonshire continue to receive the expert compassionate care provided by the Cransley Hospice team.

“It helps give certainty for the future, not just to the patients and families who need this service, but for the staff too,” said Cransley Hospice Trust chair Paul Humphrey. “I would like to thank our partners and colleagues within the NHS for their engagement and hard work so far and look forward to the successful completion of works to refurbish and upgrade the Pipers Hill Road facility.”

Chief executive Philip Talbot added: “This news provides us with the opportunity to invest in the wider modern hospice movement locally and provide the best end of life care for those patients, carers and families experiencing end-of-life support in North Northamptonshire.”

He paid tribute to the support from individuals and businesses that has totalled more than £1 million a year for several years. The hospice is targeting annual fundraising of £2 million

“It was a great pleasure and an honour to welcome HRH The Duke of Gloucester to our fundraising offices in celebration of this incredible milestone,” said Mr Talbot.

Volunteer Sally Chambers has been involved with the hospice since it opened.

“I have been involved with Cransley Hospice from the very beginning in various ways and it is interesting to see the future plans,” she said.

“Volunteering for CHT has been a big part of my life and I am excited to be a part of the future.”

The money raised will fund more than 3,000 gift packs.

“It was a very special evening, made even more special by the stories shared by survivors and their families during the dinner,” said Jevgenij Lyzko, chief executive of Northamptonbased oil wholesaler Mannol UK - the ball’s headline sponsor. “I had a close friend who received one of their gift packs but it still hit home what a powerful and positive difference the charity makes to those going through a tough battle with cancer. It is important that Mannol UK plays an important role in the local community.”
