‘Game-changer’ bicycle set to transform transport
The Northampton team behind the world’s first all-plastic bike and the world’s first bicycle made from recycled plastic believe it has the potential to be ‘truly game changing’.
About 90 per cent of the material in the igus:bike is plastic, including special motion plastic components from igus, based at Caswell Road. The frame, wheels and forks are made by MTRL of the Netherlands, a partner with igus on the project since 2021.
“I have been at igus for 25-years and have seen many product launches but this new igus:bike has the potential to be truly game-changing for simple, wear-free transportation,” said igus UK managing director Matthew Aldridge. “By combining igus’ motion plastics expertise with our environmental credentials, we have produced something that we believe will change how people travel.”
Like all igus moving components, igus:bike is lubrication- and maintenance-free, a real boon for cyclists who must constantly counter the effects of weather, moisture and rust with grease and lubrication fluids. The two-wheeler has a wealth of features: it is lubrication-free, durable, light, low friction, rustfree, and performs in dirt, water and chemicals. Solid lubricants embedded in the engineered plastic parts perform the lubrication. Muck
and dirt are simply rinsed off with a hose with no need for rust-preventing oil.
igus supplies all the moving parts in the bike: ball bearings, wheel bearings, sprockets, gears, brakes, drives, cranks, and handles. The drive chain is made of carbon or rubber and a handful of other components come from partner manufacturers.
Series production of the igus:bike could be ready by end of this year. The next step for MTRL is to ensure the two models are well received by the market and to develop a children’s bike. igus is now looking to work
The founders of Northamptonshire gin manufacturer Warner’s Distillery are in line for a national prize at the Entrepreneur of the Year awards run by professional services firm EY.
Tina Warner-Keogh and Tom Warner (pictured) are the Midlands & South West regional winners and are among 20 finalists from which the winner will be announced later this month.“This is a testament to our team, who me and Tina could not do this without,” Mr Warner said.
Warner’s Distillery has also announced it has adopted B-Corp status. Full story: Page 3.
with other frame manufacturers and will expand its test lab in Cologne to examine plastic frames and wheels of all kinds and makes.
Further versions with several gears are planned, as well as an electric variant. Igus:bike will also be available as a children’s bike. The plan is that igus will provide an online configurator on which individual variants of the bike can be configured.
“The idea is that the bicycle is not thrown away when the owner needs a new frame size but is regranulated and a new frame is made from this
regranulate,” said Mr Aldridge. “This is especially interesting for a child’s bike – the bike grows with them.”
igus chief executive Frank Blasé first developed the concept for a lubrication-free bike in 2009 when holidaying in the USA and experiencing the high maintenance needs of rental bicycles. In 2019, Mr Blasé met brothers Johannes and Benjamin Alderse Baas and invested in their company MTRL a year later. From mid-2021, MTRL has focused entirely on developing the all-plastic bike with igus.

Council extends pilot grant scheme to clear fly-tipping
Apilot scheme to help landowners clear and prevent fly-tipping has been extended for further 12 months in West Northamptonshire.
When fly-tipping takes place on public land, the taxpayer pays for the removal and disposal of the waste. However, if a fly-tip occurs on private land, the landowner pays for the clean up and removal.
Northamptonshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Stephen Mold launched a scheme last year through which private landowners could apply for
a grant of up to £1,500 towards the cost of having the fly-tipped waste cleared away and to help them to install prevention measures which will make the land less vulnerable to fly-tippers in the future.
Economic turbulence puts building safety at risk, warns expert
The safety of ageing public buildings such as schools and hospitals could be at risk as the financial crisis threatens the asbestos industry, an asbestos consultancy has warned.
Advertising Sales
Ian Stone, director of Northampton-based Acorn Analytical Services, believes the industry faces “unprecedented upheaval” as harsh trading conditions begin to take their toll.
Despite being banned from new buildings more than 20 years ago, asbestos still exists in older buildings including factories, hospitals and schools where it poses a significant risk to health if it is not managed carefully.
“Never has there been so much upheaval in the asbestos industry leaving clients
Cllr David Smith, cabinet member for regulatory services, community safety and engagement, said: “West Northamptonshire is a beautiful district and it is very disappointing that some individuals decide to fly-tip their waste rather than dispose of it in a responsible and legal manner. Quite rightly these individuals risk heavy fines and possible imprisonment when caught and prosecuted.
“I am very pleased indeed that the PFCC has been able to extend this pilot and help the farmers and landowners on the frontline of this important issue.”
Jobs agency sold to HR giant
Recruitment company
Encore Personnel, which has an office in Northampton, has been acquired by global HR giant Gi Group Holding.
potentially at risk,” said Mr Stone. “Asbestos is a highly toxic material which is hidden in many older homes and public buildings.
“If you are responsible for a building which was built before 1999 you must check for the presence of asbestos. Not doing so could prove a costly mistake and potentially put lives at risk.”
The company also has branches in London, Leeds, Wolverhampton and Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire.
“It was always my preference that should Encore be acquired, it would be by a world-class recruitment leader in our sector that shared our vision and cultural values,” said Encore’s managing director Pete Taylor.
The acquisition strengthens the Gi Group’s presence in the UK market. Chief executive and president Stefano ColliLanzi said: “It will enable us to become even more competitive.”
Consider the pros and cons of commercial funding options
If you need a cash injection for your business to help with growth costs or to fund the purchase of equipment, think carefully about the finance options open to you and their potential pros and cons.
As with most things in life, the devil is in the detail when it comes to commercial finance and it is vital that once you have identified your preferred funding provider and cleared their corporate credit checks, you consult a lawyer to advise you on the terms of the proposed arrangement.
Anna Horrell, pictured, commercial lawyer with Borneo Martell Turner Coulston, said: “It is important that wherever possible you seek advice at an early stage. As soon as you receive confirmation of the key terms on which finance is
proposed, you will only have a short window of time to try to renegotiate any provisions.”
The nature of the agreement you will have to enter to secure funding will depend on the type of commercial finance arrangement you have decided to go for.
For example, an agreement which sees you secure working capital finance under the terms of an overdraft will be very different from an agreement in which you gain access to a one-off lump sum,
under a commercial term loan or a mortgage arrangement.
The experienced commercial finance lawyers at Borneo Martell Turner Coulston help you to understand the intricacies of the type of arrangement you are proposing to enter and provide reassurance that you have selected the most appropriate facility to meet your needs.
While most finance agreements will contain a set of fixed provisions that reflect standard industry practice, they will also usually contain a number of bespoke clauses designed to meet your own particular needs and to ensure the funder is adequately protected against your assessed risk profile.
It may be possible for you to renegotiate some of these bespoke provisions, but only if you begin a dialogue with
the funder at an early stage.
In many cases where commercial funding is required, the provider of the finance will insist on some sort of security being given for the amount loaned. Sometimes the requirement will be for a commercial mortgage over property or land; sometimes it will be for a legal charge to be granted over business assets, machinery or equipment.
The key when reviewing security requirements is to ensure that the proposed arrangement is workable and that you do not enter into an agreement which will effectively restrict your ability to run your business as you see fit.

Distillery’s pledge to planet after B Corp success
Spirits producer Warner’s Distillery has become a B Corporation, joining a growing group of companies pursuing purpose as well as profit.
Warner’s, based at Harrington, has been certified by B Lab, the not-forprofit organsation behind the B Corp movement, as having met social and environmental standards which represent its commitment to goals other than shareholder profit.
B Corp certification addresses the entire operations of a business, covering governance, workers, community, environment and customers. The certification process
is rigorous, with applicants required to reach a benchmark score of more than 80 while providing evidence of socially and environmentally responsible practices relating to energy supplies, waste and water use, worker compensation, diversity and corporate transparency.
To complete the certification, the company will legally embed their commitment to purpose beyond profit in their company articles.
Warner’s Distillery founder and chief executive Tom Warner said: “As the spirit of the British countryside, sustainability really is at the heart of everything we do. It is
not just lip service for us. We believe in doing the right thing by people and the planet.
“We are incredibly proud of the work we do to support with our vision to become the most nature-positive drinks business in the world.”
Warner’s has set up several projects including a first-of-its-kind, national pub accreditation scheme and has joined initiatives such as 1% For The Planet and B Corp. “There is so much to celebrate,” said Mr Warner. “This is just the beginning.” B Corp represents companies committed to changing how business operates and which believe business
can be a force for good. “We know that Warner’s are going to be a fantastic addition to the community and will continue driving the conversation forward,” said B Lab UK execuitive director Chris Turner.
“Business is a powerful force and B Corps demonstrate that you can do good in any sector. Welcoming Warner’s is an exciting moment because they have an opportunity to lead the way within the spirits industry. We and the rest of the B Corp community are really pleased to support Warner’s Gin in paving the way for a new way of doing things.”
Warner’s Distillery is now part of
a community of 5,575 businesses globally that have been certified as B Corps. The B Corp community in the UK, representing a broad cross section of industries and sizes, comprises more than 950 companies and include well-known brands such as The Guardian, innocent, Patagonia, The Body Shop and organic food pioneers Abel & Cole.
Mr Turner said: “Warner’s commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to others and help spread the idea that we can redefine success in business to be as much about people and planet as it is about profit.”
Warehouse scheme answers premises call
Developer Hampton Brook has broken ground on a new warehouse development in Towcester.
Axess Towcester is being speculatively constructed on the Tove Valley Business Park in response to continued demand for premium business premises and the expansion of the high-performance engineering sector.
Hampton Brook director Ian Jackson said: “There is clear demand for new high-quality
commercial space in the region and especially for units of this size in the Northamptonshire market where there has been a lack of new development.
“Axess Towcester will help ease this constrained supply. Being in an established employment area, it offers a highly visible anchor for businesses connected with the automotive industry.”
Completion of the 39,000 sq ft detached industrial/ warehouse facility is scheduled for March 2023.
The unit will house eight metre eaves, a two-storey office and amenity block, four level-access loading doors and an extensive yard with car parking. It will achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating.
Commercial agents Drake & Partners and Cushman & Wakefield are joint letting agents. “We are confident that the letting of Axess Towcester will bring significant investment and employment opportunities to the area,” said Mr Jackson.
Golf day boosts hospice’s fundraising
Golfers have raised more than £16,600 for Cynthia Spencer Hospice at the charity’s fifth annual corporate golf day at Northampton Golf Club.
Winners Selected Fitness retained their title from last year, ahead of this year’s runner-up VEND 43 and third-placed Action Express.
A total 27 teams took parta record or the event, said Nina Gandy, the hospice’s corporate partnerships fundraiser
“We are thrilled by the success of this year’s golf day and that the event has grown again year on year since we launched,” she added.
“We had the most teams we
have ever had taking part and to have increased the fundraising total is a huge bonus”
Several businesses, including Action Express, were taking part in the golf day for the first time.
Headline sponsor of the event for the second year was ACS Solutions. “We are huge supporters of the work the hospice does both in the inpatient unit and within the community,” said ACS director Chris Wright. “We are committed to supporting our local communities too and cannot wait to be involved in future events.
The team work tirelessly to put on these events which always prove a real success
and are enjoyed by lots of local companies who equally show their commitment to the charity’s work.”

Law firm relishes new office move
Switch to Avon building is part of regional expansion programme
Law firm HCR Hewitsons is preparing to move into its new office in the former Avon building in Northampton later this month.
The firm’s Central England division has signed the lease on the premises at Lancaster House as part of its continued expansion of HCR’s regional presence.
The business has also announced new roles and hires. David Davies, who joined HCR as a corporate partner in September to expand the service available in the region, becomes part of the firm’s corporate team. Lynne Adams, becomes head of immigration and Ben Stanton, will lead the firm’s employment team.
Ms Adams has also been promoted to legal director along with Michael Campbell in real estate. Agriculture and rural affairs specialist Stephanie Dennis has been promoted to partner.
Investment in the new office, on the same site as the University of Northampton’s Waterside campus,
demonstrates the firm’s commitment to the area, said joint head of office Charlotte Thornton-Smith. “Our new location provides the perfect springboard for continued growth which we anticipate will come from our expanded business services and private client offers along with our deep sector expertise which we provide to individuals and businesses in the region.”
HCR is looking to bring in more senior hires in the next few months, she added.
Dominic Hopkins, who shares leadership of the new office with Ms Thornton-Smith, said: “This move provides new opportunities to our staff both for personal growth and career development as well as a wider range of colleagues with whom to collaborate and legal disciplines to explore. Since Hewitsons’ merger with HCR, we have really valued being able to draw on the firm’s wider resources to the benefit of businesses and community in the region.”
Council wins FSB support award
Its support for small businesses has won West Northamptonshire Council a Best in the Region award from the Federation of Small Businesses.

The judges were impressed with the council’s communication with and promotion of SMEs, as well as practical support such as webinars and the development of the Explore West Northants e-commerce and tourism app.
Cllr Daniel Lister, cabinet member for economic development, town centre regeneration and growth, said: “I think I speak on behalf of everyone when I say we are proud of what we do and strive to continue to play an enthusiastic and positive role in helping small businesses and the local economy thrive.”
Jennifer Thomas, the FSB’s development manager for Northamptonshire, added: “We look forward to continuing to work with them and all our other business-supporting councils to ensure we have a vibrant and strong local SME community.”

Council appoints innovation experts to run £14m creative hub
Vulcan Works project expected to create up to 500 new jobs
Innovation centre management company
Oxford Innovation Space is to manage the newly transformed Vulcan Works creative hub in Northampton. The company has been appointed by West Northamptonshire Council, which has completed a £14 million regeneration project to transform the area, including two new buildings, along with the renovation of a former ironworks and a collection of old and derelict industrial workshops.
The result will provide local creative businesses with studios, workshops and managed workspaces. It is anticipated that during its first ten years of operation, Vulcan Works will support up to 150 businesses, creating around 500 jobs. The site consists of 68 units specifically aimed at start-ups and growing businesses within the creative industry.
Oxford Innovation Space manages innovation centres throughout the UK. Managing
director Jo Stevens said: “We are delighted to be managing this new centre that is part of such an inspiring rejuvenation project. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide bespoke support for all businesses within our centres. It is much more than a workspace; we build innovative communities that, with the expert support from our innovation directors, are encouraged to grow and thrive.”
Northampton has been identified as one of the top ten innovative places in the UK, she added. “We are really looking forward to help drive this further and maximise the innovative spirit of the town.”
The South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership contributed £6.3 million towards the scheme through the Local Growth Fund with a further £3 million contribution from the Waterside Enterprise Zone.
Cllr Daniel Lister, cabinet member for economic development, town centre regeneration and growth
at West Northamptonshire Council, said: “Oxford Innovation has a fantastic track record in managing sites like Vulcan Works and we are very lucky to have them on board. I know with their guidance and support, the small creative businesses choosing the site as their home will go from strength to strength.”
Creative entrepreneurs are being invited to register their interest in the business spaces at Vulcan Works. The workspaces are due to be available from early next year and businesses can register
interest in a unit at https:// oxfordinnovationspace.co.uk/ contact/.
Cllr Lister said: “The economy has faced several big shocks over the last few years and many people have lost their jobs or been forced to rethink what they are doing. If we want to build back better, we must strike while the iron is hot and support those people who are able to innovate, exploit existing potential and create new jobs.”
Roofing specialist unveils growth restructuring plan
Rapid growth has led to a restructuring at roofscape and sustainability specialist Langley.
The Langley Group, which has operated under the Langley name since the 1960s, has brought its core operations under one roof as part of a major investment programme.
The group will now operate three core business units - Roofing Solutions, Eco Solutions and Regeneration - to deliver roofing, green infrastructure and rooftop development and extension services designed to meet the challenges of climate change and tackle issues such as the cost of living crisis, lack of affordable housing and limited access to green space.
The Roofing Solutions and Regeneration divisions will be led by managing director Dean Wincott. Roofing Solutions provides highperformance, compliant and sustainable waterproofing and safety systems for refurbishment and new build developments.
Regeneration provides expert feasibility, design, planning and installation of rooftop developments, helping to capitalise on the roofspace above existing buildings.
Eco Solutions, with managing director Mike Brogan at the helm, focuses on green infrastructure and design, including sustainable roofing, water management, solar energy, decarbonisation and biodiversity.
Tony Silvestri will remain Langley’s group chief executive. “Langley has been through a transformational period of growth in recent years,” he said. “We are committed to our vision of For Better Living, innovating in everything we do, improving the lives of everyone we work with and having a positive impact on the world around us.
“By bringing the vast expertise, knowledge and specialisms across our teams under one roof, we will be even better equipped to deliver greater sustainability and social and economic value.”
MP hails importance of new training facility
Northampton North MP Michael Ellis tried his hand at bricklaying after opening the new extension at Northampton College’s Advanced Construction Engineering Centre.
Mr Ellis, who is also the Attorney General at time of his visit, said: “Advanced construction engineering is in such demand and we need these young people. They are part of building our economy and our society. Colleges like this - and Northampton
College is an exemplarplay an important part in our social construct as well as our learning, developing skills that are in acute demand.”
The original ACE Centre opened in 2019 to tackle a severe skills shortage and to build a better future for the construction industry in Northamptonshire. The £4.75 million facility is now home to 400 full-time students, 200 apprentices and 50 adult learners, training the next generation of builders, plumbers and decorators.
College principal Pat Brennan-Barrett said: “There is huge economic growth locally and Northamptonshire is needed now more than ever to drive the economy forward. There is an onus on our young people to get their qualifications and help us to rebuild.”
Industry partners attended the opening at the Booth Lane campus, including Castle Climate Control, Cawleys Waste and Resource Management and D&A Decorators.

Vulcan Works: The newly transformed centre is to be managed by Oxford Innovation Space
Scheme ‘will transform town centre’
Work is set to begin on the transformation of former retail units in Northampton town centre into a mixed-use development of residential, retail and leisure.
West Northamptonshire Council has exchanged contracts on the former BHS and Clinton units in Abington Street which, along with the former M&S unit, will be demolished and replaced with the new development.
By creating new residential space, the scheme will bring increased footfall into the town centre to support the existing retail offer, the council says.
The works form part of the Northampton Town Centre
Work begins on transformation of former retail units
Masterplan (2019). The wider regeneration of Northampton Town Centre includes the Market Square redevelopment which will see the area become a cultural hub for the town centre.
Public realm works in Abington Street and Fish Street which will see the area transformed with new paving, improved seating, lighting, landscaping and public art installations.
Cllr Daniel Lister, cabinet member for economic
development, town centre regeneration and growth at WNC said: “Ensuring that Northampton is a place where residents and businesses can thrive is a significant priority for us as a council and the redevelopment of 35-45 Abington Street will transform this area for our communities.
“We look forward to completing on this building and beginning to shape the future of this area of the town, ensuring that it offers opportunities for businesses and residents alike.”
Brendan Bruder, Abbeyross Property Consultants managing director and Northampton Forward board member, added: “This is a key site which will allow the delivery of more much-
needed residential development in Northampton town centre.People’s shopping habits have changed drastically and the department store model is clearly no longer in demand.
“We need to do something much more creative with these spaces. Adding homes in mixed use schemes energises the town, creates places for people to live, shop, socialise and find the services they need in a sustainable way.”
The building’s acquisition has been supported by the £9.7 million from High Street Fund which West Northamptonshire Council secured from central government towards the wider regeneration of Northampton town centre.
Are you ready for the big switch-off?
The UK’s analogue network will be switching to digital in 2025
If you are not ready, this is how it could affect your business:
Your phone lines won’t work
Your Internet will stop working
You won’t be able to take card payments
Your alarm monitoring will stop working
You may lose your existing business phone numbers
Be prepared for the switch in advance and ensure your business doesn’t lose vital, potentially costly connectivity.
2025? That’s ages, I have time!
Wrong, 2025 might seem like a long way away. But starting April 2025 there will be a forced migration period for all businesses. So, the most cost-effective time to transition is now!
Keep staff happy in times of crisis
Business owners worried about how to look after their employees amid the cost of living crisis may be considering measures to protect jobs and the business itself. But there are alternatives available, says a Northamptonshire HR specialist.
“Many employers are considering restructuring and redundancy as their only options to help their business survive but it does not always have to come to that,” says Rachel Collar, owner and managing director of Haus of HR in Towcester.
She is advising employers to take three key steps to ride out the turbulent times and to keep their staff happy:
n Assess the real risks to the business in order to mitigate them;
n Review all the options and potential solutions to the risks;
n Create a solid plan of action to move forward.
“This is not always easy when you are so close to a problem,” said Ms Collar. “But that is where I want to help.”
Haus of HR, which outsources a range of HR services to business across Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes, is offering a free consultation to businesses to discuss and guide them through the crisis.
Ms Collar said: “I truly want to see our local business community thrive throughout all of this. No catch, just me, in your office for an hour, answering questions and helping you to create a plan of action. I know I am in a fortunate position to be able to see many of the ways of keeping a workforce happy without it coming at a big cost to an employer so I want to share my knowledge and help ease some of the burden right now.”

Menopause support ‘will make workplace better’
Construction giant Travis Perkins plc has committed to support those among its female workforce who struggle with the menopause.
A substantial number of women have quit their jobs because of the menopause and their struggle with the symptoms in the workplace. A study earlier this year concluded that more than one million women in the UK could be forced out of their jobs this year because their employers are failing to support them as they go through the menopause.
Now Travis Perkins, the UK’s largest distributor of building materials, has signed up to the Menopause Workplace Pledge, partnered with the education and training support organisation Menopause Experts Group and created a policy to support colleagues affected.
Training is being made available to Travis Perkins’ more than 20,000 colleagues, with particular emphasis on the group’s managers and 250 mental health first aiders, who will be equipped to signpost help and
information about menopause.
Travis Perkins, whose UK headquarters are in Northampton, has pledged to provide an environment which nurtures diversity and improves the gender balance across the business. “A modern construction workforce is a diverse one and balancing physical, mental and financial wellbeing is key to creating a supportive workplace where everyone feels they can belong,” said the company’s HR chief officer Emma Rose.
More than 100 Travis Perkins staff have already joined its online Hot Flush community, which compliments the group’s wellbeing hub and colleague training is under way. The company’s Employee Assistance Programme provider Care First is also delivering webinars and supporting the group’s drop-in cafe initiative, where issues such as the implications of retiring from work early due to the menopause and the drastic shortfall in pensions contributions this can lead to are being discussed.
“The menopause can be challenging for both women and men,” said Ms Rose. “Through awareness and education, we want colleagues to have access to the right support and information and to feel confident in talking about their own health and wellbeing so we can ensure those
who need it are supported and feel able and confident to talk to their manager and discuss any adjustments they may need at work.”
Travis Perkins’ move has been welcomed at government level. “It is fantastic to see employers taking the issue seriously and making changes
that will really benefit women at this time of their lives,” said MP Carolyn Harris, chair of the Menopause AllParty Parliamentary group and cochair of the government’s Menopause Taskforce.
“I am delighted that Travis Perkins has listened to what their employees need and has introduced a Menopause Policy. This will not only make staff feel valued and understood but will also benefit the business as they will be able to retain loyal and experienced members of their team.
“When we talk, we learn and by introducing this policy, Travis Perkins will encourage that conversation and make the workplace a better and more inclusive place for everyone.”
Education about the menopause is central to Menopause Experts Group’s work to remove the stigma around it. Its partnership with Travis Perkins will deliver comprehensive, trustworthy and accredited information and training to help staff understand and manage symptoms better, said MEG founder and chief executive Dee Murray.

Time off the road means money away from your business
At the latter end of 2021, the long-standing Northampton-based manufacturer-approved body shop and accident repair centre Castle Coachworks launched a new sister company, Castle Vehicle Servicing. Initially established to satisfy the demand for first-class mechanical repairs, servicing and MOTs for the body shop’s existing corporate clients, Castle Vehicle Servicing has already proved to be a company equipped for future growth.
With well-established links to the national car parts network and other local businesses in addition to an impressive planned expansion phase in the pipeline from the off, since opening CVS has already branched out to provide repair solutions to the business and retail sectors.
Under the expert eye of the company’s appointed director Lee Mayne - a familiar face with over 28 years of experience in the motor repair industry - the company has recently added 12,000 square ft to its existing workshop.
New MOT bays have been approved for
classes 4, 5 and 7, facilitating tests for cars, mini-buses and lightweight commercial vehicles. The workshop boasts state-of-theart wheel alignment and ADAS calibration technology. An additional nine ramps have been installed with the potential of rising to 18 ramps in line with business needs.
Mayne is confident that the company will go from strength to strength without compromising on exceptional quality.
“At CVS, we understand that time off the road can mean money away from your business,” he says. “For this reason, we always aim to repair right the first time every time and ensure the smoothest customer journey along the way.
“Not only will this new unit allow us to facilitate more fleets but it also will generate local jobs as we will be looking to employ in all areas from technicians to fostering the future faces of the industry through apprenticeship programmes.
“Watch this space...”

Accountants bid farewell to stalwart partner
Pete Simons, partner at accountancy practice Moore in Corby and Northampton, has retired after a career spanning 33 years with the firm.
“After more than 30 years, I have decided it is time for a new adventure and I am looking forward to a muchneeded change of pace,” he said.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Moore and have had the pleasure of working with some incredible colleagues and clients. I am very fortunate to be able to retire early, which is only possible because we have
such a strong team in place and I know that I will be leaving my clients and the firm in good hands.”
Mr Simons joined the firm’s Northampton office as a trainee in 1989, qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1993 and as a chartered tax adviser in 1996. He became a partner in 1999.
“Pete has made an enormous contribution to the firm over the past 33 years and will be much missed,” said managing partner Nick Bairstow. “The whole team at Moore wish him a very long and happy retirement and all the best for the future.”
Cheers! Salon toasts centenary
Raise a glass to 100 years of hairdressing. John Newman Hairdressing & Beauty has been celebrating its centenary of trading in the Northamptonshire town of Rothwell and the business threw open the doors of its salon in Bridge Street to welcome suppliers, staff, friends and family to join the party.
Salon director Shirley Newman, whose husband John retired almost a decade ago through ill health, represents the third generation of the Newman family to run the business.
“This is such a fantastic achievement to still be here after 100 years in Rothwell and such credit and tribute to the Newman family’s spirit,” she said. “The continued success we have witnessed is all down to our incredibly loyal and innovative staff who have been constantly evolving the JNH&B brand and taking us into the 21st century.”
There has never been a century like it, she added, and the last few years have been as tough as those of a century ago. “It is a huge achievement to have survived the pandemic. However, we are stronger
today than ever, thanks to our loyal customers and amazing staff. The team has not only put their heart and soul into the business but they have also donated their own personal time to support many local charities. I thank everyone past and present for supporting us through the good times and the hard times.”
The JNH&B team arranged a raffle to support local societies and associations including the Alzheimer’s Society; the Stroke Association and Twinkling Stars Appeal for the Kettering General Hospital Charity Fund.

Government grant can help with heat pump installation
As more and more people understand the benefits that heat pumps can bring in heating their homes or commercial premises, Burton Latimer-based Griffiths are working hard as the county’s premier installer of this energysaving microgeneration technology.
Heat pumps extract heat from the air or ground and very efficiently use it to warm the water flowing through radiators or underfloor heating. They are powered by electricity but 1kW of electrical power will produce around 4kW of useable heat - so four times more energy-efficient than an electric fan heater.
If the new heat pump is replacing a gas or oil boiler, electric night storage heaters or is for a new selfbuild house, it will qualify for an upfront government grant under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This will be £5,000 for an air source heat pump or £6,000 for a ground source heat pump.
In 2008, Griffiths became the first approved installers of heat pumps in Northamptonshire under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and has carried out hundreds of heat pump jobs since then.
Working with two of the biggest names in heat pump technologyDaikin, with regards to air source heat pumps and Kensa for the ground
source projects - Griffiths have built up a wealth of experience in application, installation and servicing.
Griffiths are Daikin D1+
Premier Partner Approved Installers of air source heat pumps and part of Kensa’s Underground Network of Approved Installers for ground source heat pumps.
Daikin Altherma air source heat pumps are available in three versions, LT (low temperature) that provide hot water up to 65°C and HT (high temperature) with a maximum of 80°C. The high temperature systems are ideal for larger or hard to heat properties such as listed buildings.
Also available is the Altherma Hybrid air source heat pump, a combined heat pump and combi gas boiler which is aimed at the gas boiler replacement market but is equally suitable for new builds that have natural gas or LPG available.
It could provide a 35 per cent saving on current gas costs. However, unfortunately, the hybrid systems do not qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
As well as installing the heat pumps, Griffiths’ own engineers also carry out all associated plumbing and electrical works and the Griffiths service team provide the essential annual maintenance, ensuring the heat pumps are running as efficiently as possible.
Investing in the future: Opportunity knocks for all
Offering apprenticeship routes into the industry is the latest way in which Midlands-based architects GSSArchitecture are continuing to invest in their people.
As recognised Investors in People Gold Standard, GSS offer educational and training opportunities to all members of the GSS team. The practice are committed to investing in the future of young people and believe in shining a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships and training makes to individuals, businesses, and the wider economy.
GSS has a long history of providing opportunities, training and support in the profession. Numerous members of staff are currently undertaking student year-out placements, studying part-time to become fully qualified or on apprenticeship schemes or work experience, working within architecture, architectural technology, quantity surveying, project
management, graphic design, ICT and business administration.
Most recently, Shannon Walker, pictured above, passed her Royal Institute of British Architects Part 3 examinations, allowing her to register as a fully qualified architect. She started her seven-year architectural
studies journey through the apprenticeship route, meaning she could work and study at the same time and is one of the first to qualify through the Level 7 apprenticeship course, which combines the Part 2 and 3 elements.
GSSArchitecture’s senior partner Tom Lyons said:
“From current to qualified apprentices and all staff members, we are proud to help build the future of people across the industry through all manner of training and courses. GSS have continuously invested in the next generation throughout our 140-year history, and we believe in continuing to invest in our people to ensure they have the best opportunities for growth in both a professional and personal sense.”
As further recognition of the practice’s commitment to their people, GSS have also been shortlisted for the Employer of the Year award at this year’s Northamptonshire Business Excellence Awards, which recognises employers that have created an outstanding workplace for their team.

Our systems guarantee your business security
Ask yourself. Do you sell products? Do you have a lot of valuable stock? Do you have employees on-site? Then you need a security system.
Here at BTT, we have significant experience working in many industries. This allows us to use the best-quality systems, combined with our knowledge and experience, to tailor security systems to fit your business needs.
Access Control
Access control systems make life easier for your employees, save your business money and keep your workplace and assets secure.
There are many reasons to get access control but the most important is that it protects your business and your staff. We provide many different types of access control including pin code systems, access pass/fob systems, video/audio intercom systems, and biometric access control.
CCTV
We have partnered with some of the best suppliers of CCTV surveillance systems and cameras. We design, supply and install your CCTV system and cameras and our engineers will train your staff on how to use the new security system and ensure it is set up the way you require.
Reasons you need CCTV: n Evidence in court; n Crime deterrent; n Prevents grazing; n Improves health and safety; n Training purposes.
Fire Detection and Alarm Systems
When purchasing or using a fire alarm system, you should ensure the design of the system meets all relevant requirements so you can enforce the proper authorities and insurers.
If you are uncertain of what you need, refer to one or more of the following: guidance documents that support fire safety legislation; any authority responsible for enforcing fire safety legislation that applies to the premises; the property insurer; any relevant fire risk assessment.
Look at how effectively the alarm alerts people to danger and protects their safety. We can help you to install an effective fire alarm system that will properly protect your business.
Intruder Alarms
Why should you get an intruder alarm? n It acts as a deterrent for thieves;
n It makes the working environment safer; n It gives you peace of mind; n It helps monitor environmental threats; n It could reduce your insurance premiums.
We can help you to decide which alarm system your company requires. The choice depends on your business size, how much stock you keep on site, how many staff are on site and what requirements your system must meet.
Security Barriers
When it comes to security, barriers are normally your first line of defence. You want it to be hard to gain access to your sight for anyone who is not a staff member. BTT has been installing commercial security barriers for almost ten years.
There are different types of barriers: Drop arm barriers Normally found at entrances. Can be automated for all approaching vehicles or it can stay down until identity is confirmed.
Turnstiles Controls employee and visitor access. Can be half-height or full-height.
Bollards Useful for traffic management, pedestrian safety and preventing damage.
Palisade fencing Protect the boundaries of your site. It is easy to maintain and extremely durable.

Expo aims to bring businesses together
The date: February 8 2023.
The venue: Hangar One at Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire. The countdown has begun to a superb event for businesses across the county to reach, engage and connect.
The occasion is the first Your Business Expo of 2023, brought to Northamptonshire’s business community by Business Times - the county’s leading business newspaper - and sponsored by full service marketing agency qoob.
Your Business Expo aims to create opportunities for quality sales leads, to meet with the county’s key decision-makers and to increase awareness of your business brand.
Major exhibitors have already signed up to take part and visitors can also benefit from insightful workshops delivered by industry experts on key business topics.
These will include the latest expert advice on marketing, delivered by qoob, and on HR matters in a discussion led by Your Business Expo fellow sponsor HR Solutions.
SJP Contracts in Milton Keynes have also signed up as a Your Business Expo sponsor, leaving only five further sponsorship slots available
Your Business Expo will begin with a networking breakfast ahead
of the main exhibition itself, giving participating businesses and others the opportunity to enjoy some extra networking.
Your Business Expo 2023 is the first since the Your Business Expo brand became part of Pulse Group Media, publisher of Business Times and its sister title Business MK, covering Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire.
Plans are under way to stage a Your Business Expo in Milton Keynes later in 2023.
“Already the buzz is starting,” said Pulse Group Media director Kerry Lewis-Stevenson. “The reaction to our announcing the date has been
overwhelming, frankly, and we are delighted with the response in terms of enquiries, the enthusiasm of the sponsors we have already secured and the quality of exhibitors who have already signed up to be there.
“Sywell will be a wonderful venue befitting an event of the quality we are aiming to stage and we know that businesses around the county will benefit by coming along to join us.”

‘If exhibitors work together, it can make a real difference’
Awealth of resources is on offer to businesses signing up to exhibit at Your Business Expo 2023.
Headline sponsor qoob is sharing its marketing expertise to help exhibitors to make the most of opportunities ahead of the exhibition. The full service marketing agency, which has been working with Business Times since 2021, has put together a range of free resources from graphics for use on social media to press release templates for the exclusive use of exhibitors.
Managing director Matthew Rigby-White said: “The aim of the exhibition is to reach, engage and connect. It makes sense for us to support exhibitors, which will increase awareness and numbers to the exhibition.
“It costs money to exhibit so the more businesses can get out of the event the better. They want to see a return on their investment but if they do not tell their network they are exhibiting, it is a missed opportunity. If exhibitors work
together then it can make a real difference to what each business can get out of the event.”
Your Business Expo aims to create opportunities for quality sales leads, to meet with key decisionmakers and to increase awareness of each exhibitor’s brand. Insightful workshops by industry experts on key business topics will be run throughout the day, including one by qoob specialists who will offer solutions to businesses looking for better returns from their marketing.
“We reviewed our workshop plans and, while we believe our specialist knowledge has real value, we realised it was important to share this information with as many people as possible which is why we are now running the workshop for free,” said Matthew.
The qoob team will be contacting exhibitors to explore ways they can help support businesses in the countdown to Your Business Expo.
“This fresh approach will bring real benefits to all businesses who have signed up to Your Business Expo.,” said Matthew.

Rebrand marks milestone anniversary
Managing director
Scott Norville shows off Silverstone Fleet Management’s new rebrand to mark its tenth anniversary.
The new Silverstone Leasing brandmark not only forms the letter ‘O’ in Silverstone but also takes on the form of a road. There are also a number of sub brands in the new visuals, which cover each arm of the business: Silverstone EV, Silverstone Van Leasing and Silverstone Fleet Management.
“Our tenth anniversary seemed like the perfect time to refresh and modernise our brand,” said Mr Norville. “Simplicity and customer service are key when choosing a car or van with us and we wanted that to be reflected in our branding.
“Over the years we have had numerous customers under the impression that we only deal with large fleets. In essence we do but it is not the only string to our bow, as our core business comes from companies with one to ten cars and vans.”
The logo was designed by the Blayney Partnership. Silverstone Fleet Management delivered 50 vehicles to customers during the first full year of trading.
This year it anticipates sales of up to 1,500 vehicles with a continued yearly growth of 25 per cent.

Students relish a taste of ‘The Big Apple’
These marketing students at the University of Northampton are back from a trip to New York with real-world experience gained from meeting some of the biggest names in the industry.
Kardi Somerfield, senior lecturer in marketing, flew 15 first- and second-year students across the Atlantic Ocean to take in the sights and sounds of New
York City and meet with industry experts from eight multi-million pound international marketing brands, including McCann Worldgroup, Ogilvy and TBWA Worldwide.
She said: “This visit was all about getting the students inside the industry and gaining a real-world taste of advertising and digital marketing. We are all incredibly grateful to the
companies involved for taking our students under their wing and flaming their passion for marketing. Nothing was too much trouble. Most of the students started their trip looking to graduate within social media management. However, after speaking with some particularly aspiring statisticians, they are looking at more strategic level roles.”

Stand out from the crowd this festive season
With Christmas and the New Year just around the corner, there are plenty of occasions to dress up for this party season. Corporate functions, awards ceremonies, formal family gatherings and weddings to name but a few.
The question is: What will you be wearing? The same old tired boring DJ that comes out every year? We hope not! Many people have discovered that their shape has changed considerably over the past couple of years so do not leave it till the night or the week before to find that your DJ does not meet across the chest or the waist band is beyond snug! Conversely, your suit might be hanging off you.
Maybe it is time to consider investing in something bespoke that fits you like a glove, rather than a sack of potatoes. More James Bond-style, perhaps, attire that looks and feels more stylish and altogether more individual. At Saint Crispin, we have an extensive range of ceremonial fabrics and colourful velvets. Sumptuous linings for those looking to make a statement when they take off their jacket or reach for their wallet.
Whether you choose silk, velvet or wool remember to consider the shape of the collar, a shawl or peaked lapel, contrasting button holes and or lining sleeve vent, let your personality shine through.
Complete the look with a crisp white, double-cuffed, bespoke evening shirt with your personal initials. With a variety of collar shapes to choose from, the end result will be far more memorable than that limp lacklustre shirt lurking in the depths of your wardrobe.
advice: Do not to leave it to long before booking a date in the diary. Bespoke garments take some weeks to craft so give us a call to discuss how we can help you and the occasions you have in mind. Book you appointment today - phone us on 01604 589907

‘One day my son may work out that I don’t know what I’m doing’
What was your first job?
I used to top up my pocket money washing the car and mowing the lawn. With hindsight (and retrospective commercial awareness) I drastically undercharged my parents.
Why did you choose your particular career?
A combination of an interest in business/ practical economics and solving problems, tied up with a personal skill set that’s largely centered on communication.
What’s the best job you’ve had and why?
I spent three months driving a huge crane in a logistics warehouse before going travelling. That was probably the best job, but largely because I knew I was off to South America at the end of it.
…and the worst?
The crane job. I used to have to get up at 4.30am and I’m not a great early starter.
What’s the best advice you’ve received in business?
“Don’t let them grind you down”. Tenacity and perseverance are underrated talents. It takes practice to learn how to keep going, how to relish the next challenge, how to push on when things are tough.
Of course, knowing when to stop comes with experience.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I’m quite a people guy so my highlights tend to focus on that rather than deals done etc. Seeing talent that you’ve nurtured come through and flourish - at our firm or elsewhere - is always rewarding.
…and the low point?
I’ve been in two businesses that were sold at a stage in my career when I had no voice to influence any outcome. Looking on helplessly is pretty frustrating.
Who in business do you respect the most? My first boss, Colin Mattis. There are many things we do differently as partners but he was always there. That solidarity, standing with your team when up against it, is something I’ve always tried to do with my colleagues.
What annoys you the most in business? Ego. It adds very little value to any transaction.
What’s the best thing about where you work?
We’ve got a great team and have worked very hard to recruit/retain the right people and to develop a culture that everyone respects and buys in to.
What’s your career ambition?
In some respects, to aim for a particular milestone seems limiting. How much further beyond that might you be able to go, or how
MY FAVOURITE...
FOOD I love a BBQ in the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing.
MUSIC/SONG Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane.
BOOK Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, The Reluctant Fundamentalist.
FILM Anchorman
TV PROGRAMME N/A
RESTAURANT The Hand & Flowers, chef Tom Kerridge’s pub restaurant in Marlow.
DESTINATION Usually the last place I’ve been. In this case Newport, Rhode Island
might things change given life experience. It’s great to have goals providing you regularly revisit them.
…and your life ambition?
To be a good husband and good father. To be there for my friends and family. To recognise that work, while very important, should support these ambitions rather than stifle them.
What’s the best moment of your life?
Sounds clichéd, but, getting married and the birth of our son.
…and the worst?
There was a period when my wife was very seriously poorly. That was tough. That said, it provides perspective.
How do you relax?
A walk, good coffee, a chat with my wife.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Sausage butties, although I don’t feel too guilty about them.
What’s your worst fault?
I often neglected my family and friends in the early stages of my career. Sadly it often takes something unfortunate to snap you out of that work, work, work mindset.
What’s your most treasured possession?
My wedding ring and the first Father’s Day card that my little boy made for me.
What are you afraid of?
That my boy will see through me and work out that I don’t really know what I’m doing.
What annoys you most in life?
That I get annoyed about things that don’t really matter! I’m working on letting things go.
Tell us something you regret.
I’ve made my peace with most things. Onwards and upwards.
Tell us a secret about yourself.
I’m a published poet, although I always give that answer so it’s not much of a secret.
Which two historical figures would you most like to talk to and why?
It would be interesting to chat to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X if you could get them in the same room. Two such radically different philosophies on tackling the same issue.
What are the first three things on your bucket list?
I’ve tried to get things done as I think of them.
One by-product of starting a family quite late, is that we had a little time (and money) to tick off some of those experiences.
What song/music would you like to be played at your funeral?
Honestly, I’ve never thought about it.

Pedal power boosts hospice coffers
£40,000 and counting… support for the annual Cycle4Cynthia fundraising cycle ride is set to smash its £50,000 target for the Cynthia Spencer Hospice in Northampton.
More than 660 riders took part in rides of five, ten, 25 or 50 miles in the event in the grounds of the Althorp estate whose owner Earl Spencer is the charity’s patron.
Ed Hawkins, pictured far right with his partner Dominique, a response officer with Northamptonshire Police, cycled 50 miles in tribute to his late mother-inlaw, raising £1,300. “After 33 miles I started to find it difficult but the flapjacks at the pit stops along the way kept me going,” he said. “I was compelled to take part as a way of giving something
back for the exceptional care my partner’s mum received as an inpatient at the hospice several times as well as in the comfort of her own home by the Hospice at Home team.”
Northampton-based Piroto Labelling stepped in as the headline sponsor for this year’s event, having been involved with Cycle4Cynthia and the hospice for many years. “Cycle4Cynthia has been great for us as a business and the team has been promoting it on LinkedIn to
build awareness with our customers and suppliers,” said managing director Leigh Mann, inset
The company plans to remain headline sponsor for next year, its 50th anniversary.

Developer backs cricket club’s future stars
The developers behind the new Glenvale Park neighbourhood is backing Wellingborough Town Cricket Club’s youth team with a threeyear sponsorship package. The developer has donated funds of £3,000 towards the purchase of new youth kits.
The club has been part of Wellingborough’s sporting scene since 1912 and runs three senior teams in the Northamptonshire cricket league, along with junior and youth teams for both boys and girls aged from six to 17.
Glenvale Park includes a business park that is expected to bring up to 3,000 new jobs to the town once completed. The development also includes new homes, a community hub, two primary schools, a care home and retail space.
“It is amazing to have Glenvale Park on board as a long-term sponsor for the club, helping to maintain cricket facilities for all ages at the club as well as the team’s
kit,” said cricket club chairman Clive Farrar.
The current season is over but Mr Farrar hailed the success of the 3rd XI, which won promotion, and youth team success as league winners in the U13 age group and with the U11s and U13s also winning their cup competitions.
He added: “We have a thriving youth section, which is the future of our club, and are hopeful that Glenvale Park will bring new families to Wellingborough, in turn encouraging more young people to join our youth teams to provide the senior players of tomorrow.”
Mark Best, director of Midtown Capital, managing partner of Glenvale Park, said: “What we do is about so much more than bringing new homes to Wellingborough - after all, we are also passionate about ensuring that the local community benefits in a variety of ways from our presence in the town.”
Althorp Estate. “It was incredible to see the event return to prepandemic rider levels. We are really hoping the final amount will smash through the £50,000 mark.
“This amount would be a real reflection of the amazing energy and love our supporters have for the ride and for the hospice as we continue to face fundraising challenges coming out of the post-pandemic period.”
Cobblers support mental health charity’s campaign
Northampton Town FC is supporting mental health charity If U Care Share’s annual mental health awareness campaign Inside Out.
The campaign coincided with World Suicide Prevention Month and encourages people to wear their clothes inside out as a symbol to get their feelings out in the open and start conversations to save lives.
an 11-day, 289-mile run from the charity’s offices in County Durham to Downing Street to deliver a letter on behalf of ten mental health groups calling on the government to ensure suicide prevention is included in its Levelling Up paper.
Showhomes help heart research Scheme adds to job prospects
Housebuilder Allison Homes has donated furniture worth around £8,000 to The British Heart Foundation, which will be sold in charity shops across Northamptonshire to raise money for the organisation.
The furniture was previously used in show homes at Allison Homes developments.
“We are all about giving back and doing our bit to make a positive impact,” said
Allison Homes construction director Rob Crossland.
“We were delighted to be able to are very proud that our contribution will help to fund such important research.”
Karen Wilson, BHF area manager, adds: “We are very grateful to Allison Homes for their incredible donation. Our shops rely on donations like this one to continue raising money to fund lifesaving research into heart and circulatory diseases.”

The programme will run until May 2024. Groundwork UK’s chief executiveGraham Duxbury said: “We are very excited about the potential of New to Nature to provide life-changing experiences for marginalised young people struggling to enter the jobs market.”
The charity has been delivering mental health and suicide prevention workshops with their partners the Premier League, EFL and WSL clubs since 2011. It also provides practical and emotional support to those affected by suicide.
The charity’s founder Matthew Smith completed
“We are delighted that clubs are supporting the Inside Out campaign this year,” said Matthew, whose brother Daniel took his own life. “Football is a powerful tool to get messages out to people and if even one more person sees our message and accesses the help that they need, it is worth it. We are here to support communities, save lives and prevent suicide and we want as many people across the UK as possible to take up the challenge.”

Charity issues Christmas sponsorship appeal to businesses
ANorthamptonshire charity is calling for companies and individuals to sponsor their surprise Christmas hampers so they can bring festive comfort and cheer to adult cancer patients.
For the sixth year in a row, The Lewis Foundationwhich provides free gifts and support packs to patients in Northampton, Kettering and Three Shires Hospitals throughout the year - will deliver the hampers to patients in their homes and on the wards as a surprise in the lead-up to Christmas.
The sponsored hampers are packed with festive treats and essential items from Waitrose. With each hamper costing £40, The Lewis Foundation’s cofounders Lorraine and Lee Lewis are asking for oneoff donations or ongoing sponsorship by November 20. Or donate £5 for a festive gift bag.
“Our Christmas hamper campaign has only ever had one main objective: to bring a smile to adult cancer patients who are going through a difficult time,” said Lorraine. “The people who we deliver the Christmas hampers to are always really surprised and can get very emotional.
“A lot of patients say that they cannot afford the luxuries lots of us take for granted at Christmas so they are always very grateful and happy to receive the gifts. They can never believe that the hampers are free and that is all thanks to the support from the wonderful business community.”
Last year Lorraine and Lee, with their small team of volunteers, delivered 121 hampers to hospitals in Northampton and across the Midlands. The sponsorship deadline of November 20 is in order to ensure that the charity has enough time to order the items and deliver the hampers.
“We hope local businesses and individuals get behind us in the same way they always have so that we can make this Christmas extra special for cancer patients in hospitals,” said Lee.
In return for sponsoring a hamper, companies have their business logo and a message put on the hamper. Their details will also be shared on social media and on The Lewis Foundation website.

England flanker and Northampton Saints captain Lewis Ludlam has joined the ambassador team for the Northampton Saints Foundation.
The Foundation uses the power of sport and the values of rugby to inspire, support and educate young people through social inclusion and education programmes delivered in mainstream schools and in hubs.
“I have seen close to home
how a lack of a support system can end in bad outcomes and therefore see the importance of the life-changing work the foundation does,” said Lewis. “I believe as sportsmen and women we have a fantastic opportunity to support the surrounding community by offering ourselves as positive role models. I owe rugby a massive amount and saw this as a great way to give back.”
In recent years, Lewis has supported the foundation by
filming videos for Foundation Day and helping to raise awareness of the foundation and its work. He wanted to deepen his involvement and connection and, as an official ambassador, will represent the foundation at events, spending time with young people to share his experiences and offer advice and support.
He joins fellow ambassador Saints players James Grayson, Tom Wood and Jack Fleckney.
“When Lewis approached
the foundation to show his interest in becoming an ambassador for the 22/23 season we were thrilled, saidthe foundation’s managing director Catherine Deans.
“Lewis is an exceptional captain and role model to young people, demonstrating how hard work pays off. He has a background which is in sync with our young people and has strong connections to all geographical areas we work in.”
University begins work on plans to highlight town’s rich heritage
The Universities of Northampton and Bedfordshire are pooling their expertise to keep alive the heritage of Corby and Luton for ambitious culture and community projects.
The Heritage Impact Accelerator is a project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund that will enable the University of Northampton to focus on enriching and showcasing the heritage of Corby. Both institutions will work hand in hand to develop heritage across the region.
The Heritage Impact Accelerator will allow practitioners in both towns to deliver heritage-related educational projects. These can include talks and discussions and training workshops.
The first cohort of Corby practitioners are expected to be announced later this year and practitioners will go into schools to pass on their heritage knowledge to the next generation.
The two universities have worked together previously on
outreach and industry support projects.
Once the Corby Accelerator is developed, the universities plan to open a Heritage Skills and Learning Hub. It will link participants to local heritage networks, signpost opportunities, encourage the
development of heritage staff skills and CPD opportunities.
Tim Dobson, head of access and participation at the University of Northampton, said: “Corby and Luton are towns that have rich cultural legacies that stretches beyond the industries they are traditionally famous for and which many of us may not be aware of. It is hugely important that the heritage of both towns is better known and not left to fade into the past.”
Corby plans to announce its first group of Accelerator practitioners by the end of the year.
It and Luton are two of the Heritage Fund’s key priority areas where the NLHF is looking to increase engagement and funding.
