Tech firm’s new investors push funding past $100m
Dynamic holographic technology
pioneer Envisics has welcomed a new investor and fresh investment from an existing backer after completing its Series C funding round.
M&G Investments is to add backing to the company, whose UK head office is in Milton Keynes, while Van Tuyl Companies is to increase its support in the latest funding round. The total has now passed $100 million
In March this year, Envisics announced the first phase had raised over $50 million, with the round being led by Hyundai Mobis - an existing strategic investor, with additional investments from new strategic shareholders InMotion
Ventures, the investment arm of Jaguar Land Rover, and Stellantis.
Developed at its UK centre of excellence at Knowlhill, Envisics’ holographic technology is behind market-leading Augmented Reality Head-Up Displays, an advanced display technology that is fast becoming a must-have feature for auto makers and consumers alike.
The company is pioneering the development and use of holographic technology for automotive and mobility applications.
Envisics’ chief executive and founder Dr Jamieson Christmas said: “We continue to make great progress on developing and delivering dynamic holography as a viable product at scale to the world’s
leading automakers. The vote of confidence from M&G Investments, together with our recently expanded group of investors, speaks to the significant growth potential for our technology as part of the transformation set to disrupt next generation mobility experiences.”
The UK arm Envisics Ltd is owned by Envisics Inc, based in Delaware USA. Following the Series C financing round, the ownership structure includes strategic investors Tarsadia Investments, GM Ventures, Hyundai Mobis, Jaguar Land Rover’s InMotion Ventures, Stellantis Ventures, SAIC Motors, Van Tuyl Companies and M&G Investments.
Tarsadia Investments president
Mitchell Caplan, who is also chairman of Envisics Inc., said:
“To have such a strong close to our Series C strategic funding round is a testament to the momentum built by Dr Christmas and the team at Envisics. We were an early investor in Envisics and we welcome the very impressive roster of returning and new investors in this round.”
The AR HUD market is entering a growth phase fuelled by the introduction of new technologies such as those being developed by Envisics. Based upon global market research, the addressable AR HUD market is forecast to deliver a compound annual growth rate of 28 per cent, growing from 1.6 million units in 2022 to 19.1 million in 2032.

Fitness firms complete a ‘global powerhouse’ merger
Gym equipment manufacturer
Dyaco UK has completed a strategic merger with Sweatband. com, the UK’s leading supplier of sports and fitness products.
The new combined business, based out of Dyaco UK’s head office at Wolverton Mill, becomes the only company in the UK supplying the entire fitness market from high-end commercial spaces to home fitness and every sport.
Dyaco UK’s chief executive Dean Jackson is to head the new organisation, with Sweatband.com founder Maz Darvish remaining as a shareholder but beginning a new venture launching AI technology company Cognition Hub. He will continue to be involved in Dyaco UK’s growth, the company said.
Founder steps back to focus on new AI technology venture
Mr Jackson said: “This merger marks an exciting chapter for Dyaco UK as we combine our resources and expertise to create a global powerhouse in the fitness industry.
“The merger will drive accelerated growth in key markets globally, allowing Dyaco UK to strengthen its market position and expand its reach. We are excited for the future and what the partnership holds for our customers, partners and employees.”
Manufacturer hails certification success
Electric motor and inverter manufacturer Helix has received leading industry certification for its motor and inverter automotive production programmes at its Milton Keynes Technical Centre and Flexible Manufacturing Facility, pictured, at Shenley Wood.
The certification, which has taken two years to achieve, is key to Helix’s substantial growth in higher volume programmes enabled by the launch last year of its Scaleable Core Technology platform architecture.
International Automotive Task Force 16949:2016 is a global quality standard for automotive manufacturers and their supply chains. It sets out
how businesses should ensure the quality of their output and their ability to supply original equipment manufacturers.
With IATF 16949:2016, under its belt, Helix is now looking forward to bringing its electric motor and inverter technologies to larger volume customers.
Chief manufacturing officer Richard Smith said: “Helix already operated to the required standard and now that standard is influencing our future planning. As it becomes more embedded in what we do, we are building the requirements of the standard into our thinking for the future while we continue expanding our volume production capability.”
Vehicle giant issues call for new apprentices
Automotive giant Volkswagen Group UK is calling on students to consider a career in the industry as they ponder their future professional path.
The number of teenage apprentices in the UK is rising and Volkswagen Group, whose national headquarters are at Blakelands, has more than 1,000 training in the business in roles including parts and service advisers and service and paint and body technicians.
Head of retailer learning services Helen Mirley said: “At this time of year, many people leaving education look for new and exciting opportunities, whether that is post-GCSE or post-further education. There are so many different options and the automotive industry offers a wealth of careers.
“Perceptions of workshops and garages are still very outdated, so we would encourage people to get in touch to see what roles are available and what working life in automotive is really like.”
Dyaco UK’s turnover reached £5 million in 2021/2022 and in this calendar year so far the company has reported a 33 per cent growth in sales. Following the merger, Dyaco UK is on course to achieve £20 million turnover for the 2023 financial year.
This merger unites Dyaco UK’s manufacturing capabilities, cutting-edge technology and vast product portfolio with Sweatband.com’s expertise in the e-commerce landscape, strong brand recognition and customer centric approach.
Mr Darvish said: “As I embark on a new venture, I look forward to continuing to work closely with Dyaco UK to help accelerate what has been a significant period of growth further.”
IATF 16949:2016
certification is valid for three years, after which certificate holders are subject to a BSI recertification audit. An internal audit process and annual BSI surveillance audit take place during the certification period.
The standard also requires Helix to run a level of validation with its supply chain.
Fulvia Levino, Helix’s
quality systems manager, said: “Work on the twostage IATF certification process began in 2020 and involved complying with BSI certification planning as well as creating a ‘roadmap’ for IATF compliance. BSI issued the IATF 16949 certificate in June 2023 and it means that every Helix automotive production programme will now be completed to the global industry standard.”
Apprenticeships at Volkswagen Group UK offer exciting and varied roles in an industry undergoing a transformation in technology and the way it brings vehicles to market, she added.
The programmes can be
tailored specifically to help apprentices develop and hone their skills, using both practical and theoretical learning in dealerships as well as at the Volkswagen Group’s National Learning Centre in Milton Keynes at

Hotel bids farewell to Afghan refugees
The Delta by Marriott hotel at Kents Hill has been returned to community use after housing Afghan people through the government’s Operation Pitting.
Operation Pitting was the British military operation to evacuate British nationals and eligible Afghans from Afghanistan after the 2021 Taliban offensive. The government has now found enough housing to close all the bridging hotels, of which the Delta by Marriott was one, except for those housing Afghans with specific medical needs or still awaiting permanent accommodation.
“I am pleased the city was able to contribute to the efforts of welcoming Afghan refugees to the United Kingdom,” said Milton Keynes South MP Iain Stewart.. “Living in hotel rooms was not a permanent solution for Afghans so I am pleased suitable accommodation has been found. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in this process.”

Asset firm wins green light for HQ building
Planning permission has been granted for a new bespoke corporate headquarters for asset management business Dawsongroup plc on the site of its current head office in Milton Keynes.
The company had planned to move from its HQ in Tongwell to a new building on land it owned at Brogborough near M1 J13. Construction work was due to start as the pandemic hit, during which time Dawsongroup had a change of heart
and opted to sell the Brogborough site and remain at Tongwell in a new bespoke facility.
The company will begin work on partly demolishing the workshop facility at its current premises while the new building is constructed. Then the current building will be bulldozed, leaving new headquarters to house Dawsongroup’s future head office function. “The business has outgrown our existing building in Tongwell and we have taken our

Bank of England forum debates business woes
Leaders have their say on skills, wages and jobs
Inflation and interest rates are creating a highly challenging environment in which businesses are operating, bank of England officials have been told.
They were at a discussion forum hosted by Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce to hear for themselves the concerns of local businesses.
The virtual round table discussion took place against the backdrop of a small rise in unemployment in the second quarter of 2023 and pay rates up by an average 8.1 per cent compared to the same period last year
Sean Rose, the Chamber’s head of policy and representation, said: “Our conversations with companies across the region consistently highlight the multifaceted challenges they face in the current business environment.
Whether a small start-up or a large enterprise employing hundreds, operating successfully has become increasingly challenging.
Many of our members are grappling with labour market pressures, struggling to attract individuals with the right skill sets, resulting in persistently

high wage inflation.”
The 0.1pc rise in unemployment to 4.3pc in Q2 mirrors the economy’s response to the series of interest rate rises, he added.
He and the Chamber’s immediate past president Kevin Rogers thanked the Bank of England for joining the forum. Mr Rogers, chair of Northamptonshire law firm Wilson Browne Solicitors, said: “In the face of these economic challenges, businesses require platforms such as the Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce to voice their concerns and seek much-needed support.
“The Bank of England’s dedication to actively engaging with local firms is
Empowering local SMEs with video production
commendable and fosters a collaborative environment. This collaborative approach should also be embraced by fiscal policy decisionmakers.”
Bank of England agent Rosie Smith said sessions with business leaders give valuable insight that inform the bank’s decision-making. “In times of economic turbulence, open dialogues such as these become even more critical,” she added. “These sessions provide us with a unique opportunity to directly connect with regional business leaders. By gaining a first-hand understanding of how inflation and interest rates impact local firms, we can make more informed decisions that ultimately benefit our community. “
The forum was part of a series of Bank of England briefings hosted by the Chamber.

Council urges hospitality firms to join training to tackle anti-social behaviour
Workers at pubs, bars and clubs in Milton Keynes are receiving training to spot and tackle inappropriate behaviour that people could be subjected to on a night out.
Milton Keynes City Council, the Police & Crime Commissioner and Safer MK partners have commissioned the training on how to be an ‘active bystander’, which will give workers the skills and confidence to challenge and take action when they spot unacceptable predatory and derogatory behaviour.
The online training is free to venues for a year and is being provided by behaviour change expert Aneemo. It features
real scenarios that people working behind bars, on doors and in other night time economy roles face regularly.
The training is part of a Safer Streets programme. Thames Valley Police and the council secured almost £750,000 of Home Office funding last year towards the programme which is already being used along popular pedestrian routes for better lighting and reflective paint in underpasses. Additional CCTV cameras have also been installed and there is an increased police presence at weekends in the city centre.
Venues interested in enrolling in the training should email contact@aneemo.com.

Aneemo’s chief executive Dr Emma Williamson, said: “There is a concerted effort locally as well as nationally to make our streets and communities safer for everyone, including women who are known to be disproportionately impacted by sexual harassment and abuse.”

Teddo Play, based at Brinklow, creates and distributes playbased learning resources for children aged between two and 14. The company is due to be profiled as part of the Small Business Saturday UK and its inclusion in the SmallBiz100 line-up places it among the most inspiring independent businesses in the UK.
“It is a great milestone for us as a small business,” said Teddo Play’s founder Keisha Shah, pictured, who founded the business in 2019 with her husband Amit. “I love to spark intellectual curiosity in children through our effective play-based learning resources that encourage conversations and inspire a love of learning in children, young and old and, with this beautiful recognition, I am excited to reach even more children and families in the country.”
Small Business Saturday takes place on December 2,
when customers across the UK go out to support the nation’s small businesses. Many take an active role in promoting the day by hosting events and offering promotions.
The campaign was launched by credit card company American Express in 2010. It remains its main supporter in the UK. Small Business Saturday UK director Michelle Ovens said: “Keisha is a commendable entrepreneur who always goes above and beyond placing the community at the heart of everything she does.”
manager roles. What will set the business apart, Vic explains, is a philanthropic twist: Insightful Group pledges to donate up to 50% of the recruitment fee to the client organisation’s chosen registered charity or Insightful Group’s selected partner charity.
“This novel and unique approach allows organisations to enhance their CSR commitments without incurring any additional costs compared to traditional recruitment agencies,” said Lindsey. “By collaborating with Insightful Group, businesses we work with will be local heroes, generating much needed funds for charities and therefore making a meaningful difference in the community.”
The benefits extend beyond CSR obligations. It has been proven to boost employee engagement and retention, fostering a workplace culture of which employees are proud to be part.
“Insightful Group believes in the power of recruitment to create positive change, not only within organisations but also within the broader community,” said Lindsey. “Our commitment to donating a significant portion of the recruitment fee reflects our dedication to social responsibility and community betterment.”
The company is set to welcome its first employee on its opening day at Milton Keynes Business Centre. “We already sense that we will need to move to an office the next size up,” said Lindsey “and we know the staff here will help us to do that. It’s such a great location, there are more than 100 other businesses here for us to meet and network with and the ability to upsize is exactly what we’ll need.”
Five easy ways to reduce your business tax
Tony Byrne
If you own and/or manage an SME business and you want to save business taxes then read on writes Tony Byrne, managing director of Wealth & Tax Management because this is the article for you. Here is a quick list of five easy ways to reduce your business taxes.
■ Get your business rates independently assessed and claim small business rates relief if applicable.
■ Keep your taxable profits below £50,000 to benefit from the lower rate of Corporation Tax at a rate of 19 per cent instead of 25 per cent .
■ Claim 86 per cent tax credits on research and development if applicable.
■ Maximise employer pension contributions for yourself and your spouse if you are married and your spouse is employed in the business.

Diverting waste, enriching communities
Greening construction waste: Sustainable interventions create a social impact
Encore Environment’s ethos, from its inception, was to challenge the traditional routes of construction waste disposal and motivate the doyens of the industry to think differently about waste. In an industry that is notoriously slow to embrace change, Encore has needed to be a disruptor and innovator to challenge the status quo and demonstrate that responsible waste management can be the catalyst for positive change.
At a fundamental level, it has striven to reduce the number of skips on the road - not a goal for traditional waste companies providing services where the mantra ‘The heavier the skip, the more the turnover’ approach has dominated for decades.
With the focus now on ESG and net zero targets, the tide has turned and strategic senior levels are shouting out for value and a point of difference. This is where Encore has had incredible foresight.
Rachel Rowley, managing director at Encore Environment, said: “Over the years, we have developed a range of sustainable interventions that puts environmental and social value at the heart of business
practices, not to bypass procurement but to provide the construction sector with sustainable choices that reduce waste, reduce carbon and enrich local communities.”
Encore launched Project DIVERT in 2018 to identify reusable materials from construction sites and then facilitate the connection between those reusable items and local voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations that need them. In the last year, it has helped more than 100 charities and community organisations save an estimated £60,000 in not having to purchase those items, as well as stopping 100 tonnes of waste heading to landfill and saving companies around 30 per cent on waste costs.
“It’s a win-win scenario, where community support and environmental responsibility go hand in hand,” said Ms Rowley.
“Why wouldn’t you? We are now expanding into the facilities management sector due to demand.”
Project DIVERT has had a positive impact on many voluntary and community sector organisations across Milton Keynes.
Ashe Construction’s refurbishment project at Milton Keynes College identified a substantial amount of furniture which
was successfully diverted to Return MK, a charity that provides a music, multimedia and life-skills to young people and MK
Centre for Integrated Living, an information centre for disability related issues.
Reusable carpet tiles have been diverted from a fit-out project led by ISG, to Help our Homeless in Milton Keynes and Willen Hospice.
To expand Encore’s commitment to a greener future, Encore recognised the value of aligning sustainability best practice to the education of our next generations. Waste Wise Kids, a non-profit initiative, was launched in 2019 to support primary schools in teaching children about waste and sustainability.
“With no set environmental
subjects on the curriculum, it provides teachers with a comprehensive resource written by waste management experts and primary school leaders,” said Ms Rowley. “It is fun, engaging but, importantly, teaches the children life skills in making sustainable choices.”
With a business membership opportunity, Encore seeks the backing of like-minded businesses as a great way to engage with their local communities and make a difference. There are now more than 1,200 Waste Wise Kids including schools in Milton Keynes, with so much more planned in the
Here to help: Initiative backs net zero plans
Reduce business costs and develop an energy resilience plan that will help an organisation on its way to achieving its environmental targets. That is the aim of a new programme funded by Milton Keynes City Council.
It is no secret that businesses that set out to achieve Net Zero status will naturally spend less on energy bills. It is good for the planet and good for business. And the Net Zero MK programme, delivered by Ngage Solutions in partnership with the business support organisation Buckinghamshire Business First, has been created to help employers on their way by cutting emissions, minimising waste and saving money.
“We know it can be hard for
Support scheme backs employers to build energy resilience
businesses to find the time during their day-to-day activities to start the journey to Net Zero and identify where savings can be made,” said Daniel Cope, climate change manager at Ngage Solutions.
“Buckinghamshire Business First are here to help, having worked with hundreds of organisations to measure their carbon footprint and create an energy resilience plan.”
Ngage’s experts work with businesses to help them to identify cost savings and to reduce emissions.
Net Zero MK will help businesses to:
n Calculate their carbon footprint and receive a plan to reduce it;
n Bring questions and concerns to environmental experts for advice;
n Reduce energy bills;
n Develop a Net Zero Action Plan;
n Improve energy security.
Net Zero MK is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. The programme also offers access to a £350 voucher to help businesses to implement carbon-saving initiatives and to a series of events to help participating SMEs to connect and collaborate with other businesses going through the same journey.
Independent opticians Clearsight Opticians, whose premises is at
Westcroft, in Milton Keynes, has already joined the Net Zero MK programme. “The reality of climate change is undeniable but each of us has the opportunity to take action and reduce our carbon footprint every day to help turn the tide and build a sustainable future,” said owner Arif Master. “We at Clearsight Opticians thank Buckinghamshire Business First for helping us succeed in reducing our carbon footprint.”
Buckinghamshire Business First has worked with more than 3,600 businesses to implement environmental interventions, collectively saving more than 14,000 tonnes of
CO2 emissions per year. The organisation has distributed more than £8 million directly to businesses and assisted hundreds in their transition to Net Zero.
The Net Zero MK project is part of Milton Keynes City Council’s £500,000 Green Business Recovery Fund which is intended to help local businesses improve their green offer to local residents and create more sustainable jobs.

Sustainability Matters
Diverting waste, enriching communities
Sustainability: Fundamental to all decisions we make
Achieving B-Corp status earlier this year has only served to inspire food manufacturer Huel to seek greater heights of sustainability as it prepares to move to its new factory in Milton Keynes. Its head of sustainability Jess Sansom talks to Andrew
Food is among the most impactful industries on the planet today. Obesity is growing - literally - affecting more than two billion people across the world. The industry is responsible for around 25 per cent of global gas emissions, with associated agriculture behind a further 16 per cent. One food manufacturer, however, said this has to change.
Huel, which is preparing to move into its own 71,000 sq ft manufacturing and warehouse facility in Milton Keynes, manufactures and distributes its range of plantbased food products around the world. The new factory on the PLP MK logistics park near Bow Brickhill will go a long way towards improving the company’s operational efficiency but, said head of sustainability Jess Sansom, there is so much more the entire industry can do.
“When you look at what is going on in the world from a food industry perspective, it clearly is not working in terms of people’s health,” she said. “There are huge rates of obesity and it is rising among adults and children alike. Yet there are people who go to bed hungry every night and the food system is not doing its job in terms of keeping people nourished. The system is broken.”
Rather than be part of the problem, Huel believes it offers a solution. Its products deliver complete nutrition, every product made with the right amount of micronutrients, vitamins, proteins and minerals for everyday needs. The food Huel makes is plant-based. “We are not part of the food system coming from animal agriculture so we are far less likely to
contribute to deforestation,” said Ms Sansom.
Agriculture worldwide is responsible for 75 per cent of the world’s deforestation. “We need these trees because they absorb all the carbon we are putting into the atmosphere.”
Research has shown that to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, each meal needs to have a carbon footprint of around 0.5kg CO2e or less.
Huel is determined that every meal it produces will be less. The company also is working to reduce all the environmental impacts of its products. It uses HowGood, the world’s largest product sustainability database, to determine six metrics: agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, processing greenhouse gas emissions, blue water usage, labour risk, biodiversity and land use. These guide Huel’s sourcing activity and the company looks to work with suppliers sharing those values.
Huel is a member of the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange and asks all new suppliers to sign the Huel Supplier Code of Conduct and to hold an internationally recognised, independently verified ethical certification.
“We want to make sure that sustainability is fundamental to all the decisions that we make, in the choice of suppliers, ingredients, packaging, transport, how we treat people,” said Ms Sansom. “It’s important that we build across all of that.”
To that extent, Huel earned B-Corp status in June at the end of a 12-month process. Accreditation would usually take up to three years and requires a 80pc rating. Huel achieved 92.1 per cent. “We have already been doing a lot
of what was required,” said Ms Sansom. “The real asset of B-Corp status is that it gives us a roadmap for continued improvement. We will be audited every three years and we have to show progress in order to keep the certification. That is what is driving us to the next level.”
Consumer recognition of B-Corp is still exceptionally low. “I have gone through B-Corp accreditation with two companies now and I would never recommend that a company does it in order to get people to buy more of its stuff,” said Ms Sansom. “It does not seem to influence purchasing decisions. I recommend companies to do it because there is so much coming and already present in terms of legislation, studies, reporting requirements and so on. If you go through the B-Corp process, you are going to be much better prepared and able to meet these requirements.”
Huel does not list details on the labelling of its products. “Levels of obesity have gone up but that is not going to change what people buy,” said Ms Sansom. “That’s why we are doing the checking for them. We are not asking consumers to check the information on the labels, we are effectively doing that for them so they are buying food products that already have the right levels of nutrients.”
Plastic receives a bad press in terms of sustainability but, Ms Sansom said, when used appropriately plastic is an effective low-carbon packaging material. Plastic bottles make up less than 2pc of all littered items in the UK, she said.
Huel’s product pouches are made from plastic but the firm ensures the material is recyclable, with minimal use of single-serve packaging and that recycled materials are used wherever possible.
“Plastic offers the lowest possible carbon footprint,” said Ms Sansom. “When we looked at moving to a cardboard tub to use renewable materials and make it recyclable at home, it was going to increase the carbon footprint by more than 150pc. So we didn’t.”
B-Corp status may not interest consumers but it is a powerful attraction for employees, particularly younger workers.
“Employees are incorporating B-Corp into their purchasing decisions,” said Ms Sansom. “We have a young workforce and they are really worried about these issues. They want to work for companies that are showing responsibility by becoming B-Corp and achieving status indicates to them that we as an employer are on the right track.”
B-Corp status has influenced the build and construction of the factory at Milton Keynes.
Huel is aiming for BREAMM
Excellent on the building that will become Huel’s new base from which it will serve its growing client base across the UK and Europe. It sold
more than 300 million meals worldwide in the past year.
“The factory is a key part of our growth ambitions,” said chief operations officer Ruvan Mendis. “The site will have some of the best sustainability credentials in the country.”
PLP MK logistics park is the first such park in the UK to be carbon net zero in its construction. Until the factory opens, Huel will continue to outsource its manufacturing. But moving into its new plant in Milton Keynes is set to be a game changer.
“It is huge for us,” said Ms Sansom. “It allows us so much more control. It will make us much more efficient, reduce transport miles, improve waste management. When the process is under our control, it becomes much more simple.
“It is very exciting and I am expecting our performance to improve dramatically. It also means that we can really start to look at performance and identify opportunities to improve, start to understand exactly where investment will make sense.”

Exploring new ways to grow our culture of sustainability
Traditionally, the legal sector, in particular smaller high solicitors, is a slow adopter of change and innovation, especially where major investment is required to ensure high levels of security.
As a forward-thinking law firm, Neves Solicitors is committed to implementing sustainable practices, recognising our responsibility to minimise our ecological footprint by continually seeking ways to reduce waste and conserve resources.
Our most significant accomplishment to date has been the reduction of paper usage across the law firm. By implementing new cloudbased technologies, we have successfully created a ‘paperlight’ office environment, leading to an impressive 85 per cent decrease in printing at the Milton Keynes office.
We have calculated that the reduction in printing across our three offices is saving 121,000 lbs of CO2, equivalent to 11 cars per year.*
In addition to reducing
paper usage, we have implemented several other eco-friendly initiatives across all our offices. We believe that our comprehensive approach, which encompasses both major technological initiatives and smaller but equally important measures, helps to foster a culture of sustainability within our firm, with members of staff regularly contributing ideas and suggestions for improvement.
We constantly strive to build on our achievements by exploring new ways to further reduce our carbon emissions and this forms an integral part of our strategic

It also offers its customers environmentally friendly lithium-ion trucks that are CO2-neutral to the point of delivery.
Jungheinrich already evaluates its suppliers with respect to human rights, the environment and compliance. More than 700 suppliers are regularly surveyed, covering 75 per cent of the global purchasing volume.

Campaign highlights new rules on single use plastic
Recycling specialist
Cawleys has launched a campaign to help hospitality businesses and food retailers to understand the new rules regarding single use plastics.
From October 1, businesses must no longer supply, sell or offer certain single use plastic items in England.
The ban includes all single use items wholly or partially made from plastic including plastic cutlery, trays, plates, bowls and balloon sticks as well as certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers.
Organisations that flout the ban risk being fined.
Now Cawleys is releasing a series of social media posts and working directly with its clients to clarify the rule changes and to help businesses to prepare.

“We have seen some of our customers already implement alternative packaging, cutlery and containers solutionswhich we provide a range of collection and recycling options for, however we recognise the significant impact this will have on retailers, takeaways, food vendors and the hospitality industry.”
There are exceptions to the ban: companies supplying single-use items only to other businesses can continue to do so. Items being used as packaging, pre-filled or filled at the point of sale are allowed.
“Our campaign is designed to help those businesses understand the ban, exemptions and avoid a fine,” said Ms Cawley.

Guests back commitment to energy self-sufficiency
Some 26,500 eco-conscious guests staying more than one night at Wyboston Lakes Resort have chosen to have a tree planted on the resort instead of having their room cleaned since the resort’s energy saving Room2Grow sustainability initiative was launched a year ago.
“The response has been phenomenal, many times greater than we expected,” said the resort’s managing director Steve Jones, inset. “It’s marvellous that guests have been so willing to make this choice and take the chance to help us with our commitment to our philosophy of ‘More Sustainable, No Apology.”
Room2Grow has already been widely acclaimed both
in the UK and overseas, helping the resort to win three important awards since it was launched: the mialist Sustainability Award, IACC Americas Innovation Award 2023 for Sustainability Initiatives and recently the Conference & Events Awards 2023 Sustainability Award.
The Wyboston Lakes Resort team are planting the trees on the 380-acre site and are using compost produced on the site as a product of the resort’s latest sustainability investment. The site has acquired and is using a new biodigester to ensure all food waste is converted into fresh compost for use across the site including for tree planting.
The resort’s commitment to
sustainability has been independently accredited by earning gold awards from the Green Tourism Awards and the IACC, and EcoSmart Platinum Venue Award from Greengage Solutions.
Wyboston Lakes published a fouryear Green Energy Roadmap last month as the foundation for its plan to become self-sufficient by producing its own green energy using the natural resources available on site, which will help to achieve its Net Zero Carbon Emissions target. All electric energy on site now comes from renewable resources, reducing the resort’s carbon footprint by 65 per cent.
The resort has been zero-to-landfill since 2015 and is currently eradicating its use of fossil fuels.
University leads £14m net zero hydrogen bid
Cranfield University is leading UK collaboration on an international partnership to make low-cost, large-scale, net zero hydrogen production a reality is taking place at Cranfield University.
The Global Hydrogen Production Technologies Center (HyPT) is a £14.1 million five-year project led by Cranfield researchers with colleagues at Arizona State University, the University of Adelaide and the University of Toronto.
It aims to accelerate net zero hydrogen technologies to make
it available at a cost as low as $1 per kg of hydrogen. UK Research & Innovation has distributed £6.2 million of funding to UK HyPT partners through its Building a Green Future fund and International Science Partnerships Fund.
Researchers at Cranfield will analyse the social and environmental system changes needed to build a global hydrogen economy, addressing how to make it affordable and looking at the impact production has on local communities and ecosystems. They will also look into
Work begins on making technology affordable
ways the technology can be adopted by energy-intensive industries.
Nazmiye Ozkan, professor in sustainable energy transitions and head of the Centre for Energy Systems and Strategy at Cranfield, is the UK lead for the project. “HyPT is a transformative international
collaboration dedicated to driving the development of a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem,” she said.
“What is crucial is that this initiative will not only advance cutting-edge hydrogen technologies but also address the economic and policy dimensions that are essential to developing a global hydrogen economy.”
Other UK partners include Imperial College London, Newcastle University, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Birmingham.
Net zero hydrogen enables the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries such as ammonia, steel, cement, aluminium, transportation, and energy storage.
However, net zero hydrogen is currently several times more expensive than hydrogen produced from fossil fuels, which hinders its widespread adoption.
The project builds on Cranfield’s expertise in hydrogen research – the University’s Hydrogen Gateway brings together researchers covering the whole supply chain of hydrogen.

New rubbish collection is proving exactly that
It has been said, mostly by those whom I might have criticised somewhat in these pages, that I talk rubbish. Well, today at least it’s true and I wholeheartedly admit it.
Back in December 2008, Milton Keynes Council signed a seven-year, £80 million waste, recycling and street cleansing contract with Serco to collect and recycle waste from all of MK’s households and keep our streets clean.
After the seven years was up, this was extended for three years to 2018, then further renewed for four years in 2014 at a published value of $48 million to take it through to September 2023.
So simple maths tells us that in 2008 rubbish collection and street cleansing was costing MK’s citizens £11.43 million a year, but by 2014 it was costing £12 million a year - an uplift of just under five per cent in ten years. Pretty remarkable value, I hope that you’d agree.
However, following published complaints in July 2021 by council leader Cllr Pete Marland expressing his disappointment with how waste contractor Serco has been operating
in some areas during the pandemic, in January this year Serco was dropped by the council after 15 years. In their place, Suez Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd was awarded a new five-year contract to collect waste, keep streets clean and maintain council-owned green spaces and play areas.
The published cost for this new contract was £300 million or £60 million a year. An uplift over the old contract of a staggering 400 per cent.
Now we all know that the city is expanding and inflation is rising at a ridiculous rate. But it’s still only around 10pc per year. How could Milton Keynes City Council explain an increase of 400pc? You might also assume that the contract includes the cost of new wheelie bins that should have been literally wheeled out across the city by now.
But no... a tender for a contract worth an additional estimated £5 million to procure 300,000 wheeled bins was issued by the council in December 2021- all at an additional cost to council taxpayers.
Many of the new vehiclesaccording to Milton Keynes City Council, as it was reported at the
time, - would be ‘fully electric’ to reduce carbon emissions and the CCTV-equipped fleet would include smaller and narrower vehicles to enable collection crews to pick up waste ‘more effectively’.
According to a council news release issued on August 23 this year, however, it seems that these promises were already somewhat spurious:
“The city council has also taken the opportunity to invest in 129 (which include 65 new waste collection vehicles) new state-ofthe-art vehicles, including some smaller vehicles that can negotiate tighter spaces. All the vehicles have 360-degree cameras on board to improve safety and record any issues, as well as electric bin lifts which cut fuel consumption and emissions by around 10%. Four of the vehicles are
electric and over time the fleet will become almost entirely electric.”
So just four out of 129 new vehicles are ‘fully electric’. Using today’s hot theme, namely percentages, I’ve worked out that a massive 3.1 per cent of the new vehicles have achieved ‘fully electric’ status.
That’s more ‘fully pathetic’ than ‘fully electric’, wouldn’t you agree?
So here we are with our new, superdeluxe, Monte Carlo-worthy, topluxury, billionaire’s-bin-emptyingstyle rubbish collection service, officially launched on September 4. Clearly expectations were justifiably high. So how did they do?
Well, sadly not well. The local media is full of stories of missed collections, of failures to deliver the new wheelie bins in significant parts of the city such as Brooklands, Broughton and Newton Leys and of residents being forced to continue using sacks for rubbish which themselves are not being collected.
In some areas these sacks of rotting, uncollected rubbish - which have sat on pavements over several of the hottest days this year and for well over two weeks - are reportedly
crawling with maggots, flies and are even being predated by foxes and giant rats. Lovely.
I myself called Milton Keynes City Council over a problem with my own black wheelie bin not being collected for days and, after I finally got through the 23 calls ahead of me, I was told by a churlish youth, who called himself Chris, that it was nothing whatsoever to do with him as he was ‘customer services’ and that I needed ‘complaints’. Complaints were on a number he failed to tell me but transferred me to for another endless wait.
In fairness, my situation is now resolved and the lovely lady in ‘complaints’, Michelle, told me that her number for future complaints is 01908 253817. I’ve tested it and it’s correct.
You might, I suspect, need to make a note of it because clearly socalled ‘customer services’ is neither interested in ‘customers’ nor in ‘services’ and is a complete waste of time.
Well done, Milton Keynes City Council. Well done Suez. Cheerio.

Train operator welcomes start of station upgrade
Work is under way on an extensive programme of improvements and upgrades at Luton station.
Network Rail is replacing the station canopies on platform 1 and 2, building a new, accessible bridge and installing three lifts. Work is expected to be completed in spring 2024. The platforms will remain operational throughout the work. The accessibility work on the bridge and lifts is due to be completed in spring 2025.
Gary Walsh, route director for Network Rail in the East Midlands, said:
“I know how strongly the community who use Luton
station feel about these improvements and am pleased they will be able to see progress on site very soon.”
Passengers will experience some disruption but engineers will keep it to a minimum, Mr Walsh added.
“Work to the canopies and the subsequent work to make the station more accessible is essential to make Luton station better for all those who use it.”
Jenny Saunders, customer services director at train operator Govia Thameslink, said: “Our passengers at Luton rightly deserve better station facilities and we are delighted this work is now going to start.”

Prices and interest rates hit market growth hopes
Interest rates and inflation are the two most significant concerns for businesses in Bedfordshire, according to the county Chamber of commerce’s latest research.
The Bedfordshire Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey is a vital barometer for business conditions in the region. Its latest poll of employers
the third quarter of 2023. The findings portray a contracting economy, with key indicators in decline: Domestic sales and forward orders
Only 29 per cent of respondents reported an increase in overall sales for the quarter. Just 20 per cent saw improvements in advanced orders for
suffered, with a mere 27 per cent of local companies experiencing growth in this area.
Recruitment challenges 84 per cent of firms seeking to recruit during the third quarter encountered difficulties in finding suitable candidates, reflecting ongoing labour market
with just 26 per cent of respondents reporting improvements during the period.
Rising costs Companies faced mounting pressures to raise prices, primarily due to increased labour costs, soaring energy prices, and the elevated cost of raw materials.

“The Chamber is not only there to give support of local connections and guidance on export and trade, but go above and beyond to help us nurture business collaborations that results in business growth.”
the two most significant concerns for businesses in Bedfordshire are inflation and interest rates. These economic factors have weighed heavily on their ability to invest and an indicator that the UK economy will remain ‘slower for longer’.”
Sticky core inflation and the need for potential interest rate hikes have created an environment of caution among local companies, he added.
“These findings underscore the complex challenges facing businesses in Bedfordshire and the broader UK. As they navigate labour shortages, supply chain disruptions, and inflationary pressures, adaptability and resilience become paramount.”
The QES, which contributes to the broader British Chamber of Commerce’s national survey, provides critical insights that influence decisions by the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee and the Treasury.
“In these trying times, the resilience of Bedfordshire’s business community remains a testament to the region’s strength and determination,” Mr Richardson said. “The Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce continues to closely monitor economic trends, offering support and insights to help businesses thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.”
Driving school hails review milestone
Acompany delivering driver training for road, track and the motor industry is celebrating after passing the 1,000 five-star review milestone on Trustpilot.
CAT Driver Training, based at Millbrook near Ampthill, has been passing on its engineering expertise to driving enthusiasts and professionals since 2005. Co-owner and chief instructor Colin Hoad said: “Over the years we have come to rely on Trustpilot for customers to tell their own stories about our services. It is not right for us to say how good our coaching is – it is down to the people who we have coached and worked with.
“If you look through the many reviews, they really do tell the story with an accurate assessment of who we are and what we stand for.”
The company has also now trained more than 7,000 clients. “Reaching these milestones is a very proud moment for the entire CATDT team,” Mr Hoad added.

Glass firm finds its room to grow
Continuing our series on some of Central Bedfordshire’s inspirational businesses, we visit ToughGlaze, a leading producer of toughened and laminated glass, to find out how their growth plans led to relocation to Central Bedfordshire.
Demand for toughened and laminated glass is continuously high. Put to all kinds of commercial building uses, including external and internal glazing, partitioning, balustrading and flooring, it’s a vital construction material. Society depends on it, for light, shelter, privacy and protection.
Founded in 1993 by brothers Ashok and Bharat Varsani and close friend Vipul Vora, in north west London, ToughGlaze saw demand for its high-quality toughened glass grow rapidly. Within a few years the company made a short move to a 70,000 sq ft state-of-the-art production facility at Park Royal, North Acton where it continued to invest and grow.
Becoming one of the UK’s leading glass processors, ToughGlaze eventually outgrew
the site in 2020. The company needed to relocate once more to continue its expansion.
“The product we produce is inherently bulky and quite fragile so the production process ideally needs a lot of manufacturing space,” said sales and marketing manager Kieran Stroker. “We’re operating some of the most advanced glass processing equipment in the world and the workflow has to be right to maximise efficiency.”
ToughGlaze made the move to its factory at Brogborough in 2021. “The new facility provided us with all the production space we needed, with plenty of room for expansion as well,” said Mr Stroker.
ToughGlaze’s home in Central Bedfordshire includes a 100,000 sq ft production facility housing the complete manufacturing line, comprising cutting, polishing, drilling, toughening and laminating processes as well as extensive clean room facilities.
The premises brought the company an extra 30,000 sq ft of space to accommodate new machinery and processes, helping it to further expand its range of services.
Lidl opens £300m regional distribution centre
Supermarket giant Lidl GB has officially opened its £300 million Regional Distribution Centre - the largest Lidl warehouse in the world.
The 1.2 million sq ft facility, pictured, in Houghton Regis is 0.5km in length and could accommodate three of Lidl’s existing warehouses. It will deliver more than 9,400 pallets across 150 stores, double the number of stores served by its existing distribution centres.
It will create up to 1,500 new jobs and will be the first Lidl GB warehouse to feature automation, helping to store more goods and increase capacity at the distribution centre.
Lidl GB’s chief development officer Richard Taylor said: “The opening of this new RDC is a seminal moment for Lidl GB. The fact that Lidl’s largest RDC in the world is here in Great Britain speaks for itself not only in terms of us needing to meet the growing demand from customers but also in terms of our ambition to grow that demand in the future.”
It has also been designed with sustainability in
Invest in your talent pipeline
Job vacancies in Central Bedfordshire are on the up. This is good news as it is an indicator of business growth. While growth is positive, it also means businesses are faced with challenges in attracting and retaining employees. It is imperative that the business community is supported to develop a talent pipeline to truly respond in the long term to the needs of the local labour market.
Launched in February, the South East Midlands Careers Hub’s mission is to link schools and colleges with local employers to develop careers experiences that inspire and inform young people. Its role is to link the world of education with the world of work to build a talent pipeline with the attributes and skills required.
The Careers Hub is looking for local businesses to work with them to inspire talent for the future. There are several ways for employers and volunteers to be involved:
n Become an Enterprise Adviser, partnering with a school or college and offering strategic support to their careers programme. This role is a great opportunity to make a real, impact on young people in school and, in your business.

Green flags fly in area’s parks
Central Bedfordshire has been recognised as being home to some of the best parks and green spaces in the country in the 2023 National Green Flag Awards.
Rushmere Country and Houghton Hall Parks have again received the prestigious award. This year Houghton Hall Park received its highest ever rating. Flitton Moor, Linslade Wood, Studham Common and Tiddenfoot Waterside

Festival ‘encapsulates what inclusion is about’
Executives at automotive manufacturer Volkswagen Group UK’s headquarters have been reflecting on the company’s highly successful sponsorship of this year’s Milton Keynes Pride Festival.
The three-day event in Campbell Park drew hundreds of visitors to enjoy the late summer sun and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. VW Group’s eye-catching gazebo was staffed throughout the weekend by the company’s employees and visitors were quick to snap up rainbowcoloured VW stickers and
pose next to the rainbowliveried Tiny Buzz, which featured in VW’s sponsorship of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, won by England’s Lionesses.
Alex Smith, inset, managing director of Volkswagen Group UK, said: “I am really pleased that Volkswagen Group UK has once again sponsored Milton Keynes Pride Festival. Celebrations like this encapsulate what inclusion is about: a freeto-attend event that welcomes everyone with open
arms. Being part of the local community means being proud to be part of every community.”
Reach out... will £0.5m be there?
Keech Hospice Care, which cares for adults and children with life-limiting illnesses, is targeting a record fundraising campaign… £500,000 in just 48 hours.
REACH OUT FOR KEECH takes place over the October 7-8 weekend, a fundraising ‘super sprint’ via an online crowdfunding platform. It is asking for instant donations and has issued an appeal for would-be Keech ‘Champions’ to volunteer to spread the word about the campaign.
The hospice, based in Luton, works with adults and children across Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes and Hertfordshire. The campaign is a matched fundraiser so every donation made will have double the impact at no cost to the donor or the hospice.
Every donation will make the difference to the lives of patients and their loved ones when they need it the most, said chief executive Liz Searle inset
“It is certainly ambitious but we are determined to do all we can to raise these funds,

People director Penny Weatherup joined Mike Orford, head of PR and communications at Volkswagen UK, on the stage of the festival’s Community Tent to highlight the ways in which organisations such as Volkswagen Group can contribute towards employee wellbeing and good mental health by creating a truly welcoming and inclusive culture.
The festival benefits the local community through providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ people.
Innovation, art, science and technology take centre stage this month as the City of Codes & Lights Festival prepares to begin.
The four-day event takes place on October 4-7, featuring workshops, educational symposia and artist-commissioned installations.
The festival centres around Bletchley Park, the South Central Institute of Technology and Milton Keynes Central Library and explores learning by delving into history, art, science, maths, technology and sustainability.
which are vital for ensuring our work can continue.”
Every year, Keech cares for more than 2,500 patients with life-limiting illnesses.
“The need for our care is rising and to meet that need, we must evolve.”
Keech’s service, which is free to patients, costs £17,000 a day to provide – more than £6 million every year, with only 30 per cent covered by government funding.
To help REACH OUT FOR KEECH achieve its goal, Keech Hospice Care are seeking ‘Keech champions’ to help to spread the word about the campaign.
“Fundraisers do not necessarily need to make a donation themselves,” Ms Searle said. “We are looking for people who feel passionately about the cause and are willing to do what they can to let everyone in their networks know about the fundraiser. A champion might have personally benefited from our care or know someone who has. Or they could simply choose to be a champion because they want to do something special to help their local community and ensure no one need face death alone.”
n To be part of something special and be a champion for REACH OUT FOR KEECH, contact reach@keech.org.uk and say ‘I want to be a Keech Champion’. Keech will be in touch with everything you need.
Radio station applies for Ofcom licence
Community radio station Radio LaB has submitted an application for an Ofcom small-scale digital audio broadcasting multiplex licence.
A licence would enable the station, run by students at the University of Bedfordshire, to expand its broadcasting reach and offer DAB opportunities to other broadcasters.
If approved, the new licence would see Radio LaB reaching around 175,000 people aged 15 or over.
The university’s Radio & Audio course leader Dr Lawrie Hallett said: “This is the start of a process which will benefit the whole of Luton. We are delighted about the idea of Radio
LaB being on DAB but I am equally delighted about the wider expansion of radio broadcasting in our town. I hope this news will encourage individuals and groups to think about how they use radio as a platform to build communities and promote social gain.”
Radio LaB also has a history of community engagement, including an annual Takeover Show with
students from Luton Sixth Form College. Earlier this year the station celebrated wins in two categories at the Student Radio Association’s Amplify Awards.
The station’s expansion plans also have the backing of other local community radio stations, including Inspire FM, also based in Luton and looking forward to broadcasting on DAB. Its station operations manager Mohammed Tariq said: “We very much hope the University of Bedfordshire is successful with this application. We see this as a great opportunity for collaboration and our audience will really benefit from the station’s future presence on DAB.”
Volkswagen Group’s festival sponsorship and participation was driven by the company’s We Drive Proud UK Employee Network Group, which represents LGBTQ+ employees and their ‘ally’ colleagues. The group is one of five ENGs; the others being We Are Driven Women, We Live Cultural Diversity, We Enable and We Are Parents and Carers.
All are thriving within the business, Mr Smith said, and are a key part of the group’s
It also contributes to local projects ranging from educational development programmes to youth groups and Q:Alliance, a local LGBTQ+ charity.
Mr Smith said: “Our unwavering commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion has resulted in a growing range of initiatives, events and policy enhancements throughout the organisation.
Supporting Milton Keynes’ annual celebration and recognition of the LGBTQ+ community is a particular highlight.”
“We will focus on the contributions of culturally diverse artists, mathematicians and scientists throughout the ages,” said a spokesman for organiser Milton Keynes Islamic Arts and Culture “from the golden age of Muslim civilisation to Alan Turing’s Enigma code breaking during World War Two at Bletchley Park, which led directly to the technological advancements of the world today.”
