No, it’s not just your imagination – it really is getting bigger with 64 pages of local news, features and information in this issue.

If you haven’t already realised, everything’s a bit earlier this year - Mother’s Day (6th March), Easter Sunday (27th March) and with this in mind we have a competition to win a meal for 4 at Bella Italia, Bentley Bridge – see page 36.

It’s also a leap year, so it’s the ladies’ turn to get down on one knee (or whatever they do) and propose to their man.

This year is a momentous one for Willenhall Rugby Club, based in Essington, as they are this year, celebrating their 50th Birthday and we visited the club to find out more about their proud history. Read for yourself on page 16.

As spring is almost upon us, many of you will be starting a DIY project or two and we have quite a few local businesses ready to help – see our Homes & Gardens section from page 44 for some inspiration.

Finally, I met up with local clairvoyant Philip Solomon (he knew I was coming ) recently, to find out more about this Willenhall lad who has been referred to as ‘the greatest medium of our time’. See what he had to say on page 14.

Letters & Poems Calling All Poets The Walsall Poetry Society was formed to provide a platform where poets could voice their creativity and new poets, young or old, have the opportunity to gain experience from more seasoned well known performing poets. It also aimed to reintroduce poetry and the joy of creativity to the young via educational facilities. In its first year the WPS has achieved great success with these aims. Members have performed not just in our own Events but have appeared in many of the prestigious West Midland Events and have been featured on TV and Radio. Our workshops have been well received and our reputation is growing.

To celebrate our achievements, we will be publishing an Anthology of poems by local poets, we hope this will be the first of many. The book, a paperback edition showing a professional aspect, will be produced at minimum cost thus providing a quality product at a budget price. We do not wish to make a profit from the sales and minimum gains will go toward the next publication.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the book should Email a max of 2 poems to walsallpoetrysociety@virginmedia.com” where they will have the opportunity to be selected. A free membership to the society will be granted to each entrant. The Anthology will contain a maximum of 80 poems however any entries not included in the first edition will be given priority in the selection for the second edition.

We would prefer the poems to be produced in Word to make compilation easier. The WPS will not be responsible for copy write issue’s we suggest each poem should have the individuals copy write statement such as “© Name poetry- all rights reserved.

Stern and tense this went on, each trying to do best, Until at last, the game was called, ten-fifteen to Ernest.

Sam Bangham was the next one; he played 'gainst Arthur Hicks, So well he strove, that when done, he'd got them in a fix, Then on came Arthur Jenkins a sturdy Champion, he, Experienced and resourceful as everyone could, see.

Frank Evans was the one he play'd, nor had he long to wait, To find himself defeated, his score was only eight.

The last four winners had been Prims but now there came a stop, For Arthur Farrington came on and quickly stopped the rot, For he against tall Fred Preece did well and truly strive, Until fifteen was duly called, and Fred had only five.

And then came on Charles Ragdale, who, seeing there was a chance, Did bowl 'gainst old Jim Amos and led him such a dance.

The end was called and Charlie felt as if he was in heaven, For he had got just fifteen and he had got eleven, Tom Parker and E. Downing were. then called on to fight, A battle grim was this one, to see it was a sight.

Downing was leading all the way, and at the last did win, 'Twas well, for if he hadn't, it would have been a sin.

St Giles v. Prims • Monday July 6th 1931

Geo. Wood was called out after; Tom Haddon was his foe, Each fighter had it in his heart to cause the other woe.

Now Haddon proved the winner as oft in days gone by, He'd played upon the winning side and never ceased to try,

Twas on a July evening in nineteen thirty one, A night as still and cloudless as those we read -- long gone.

Beneath the shade of church tower. Of ancient old St Giles A sward as green as any round for furlongs or for miles.

The next to try was Reg Wood; he met Millington's Phil, And at the end of this game, Reg took a bitter pill.

For with long length he tried Phil. but sorry was his fate, For while Phil got his fifteen, Reg only scored his eight.

The river murmured gently by, elder and ash were seen, The old sweet strains from church choir were heard upon the green.

St Giles - a famous team were of bowlers tried and true, And doughty warriors they had proved, as all opponents knew.

Ern Edge. and Thomas Pardoe were gladiators next, But here again St. Giles won, and Pardoe came off vexed.

H. Downing was the next called on, H. Tonkinson to play, Both known by forename - Harry, like king of former day.

Full off on many occasions the county cup they'd won, Renown they'd gained and praises, deserved every one.

And so to any other team to win upon their green, Would need men, superhuman, or nearly so would seem.

But on this July evening, the sixth to be- exact, There assayed: forth another team, the hard task to enact, Of Russell Street the Prims were, comparatively young In years they were - as teams go - but confident and strong.

The story of this hazard too long twould take to tell, 'Tis like Jack slew the Giant, in fable all know well At seven the game was started and then two ends were on, Bill Spate and young Jim Davis, Grocutt and Farrington.

Now Jim was playing Grocutt, the game was quite even, Until Jim got a move-on and won - fifteen eleven.

O, Farrington and Billy Spate fought on with might and main, But try as hard as Bill might, he could not a win gain.

Next to come was Deeming and he came to the fray, Wearing his worsted jacket in which he chose to play.

And his antagonist was, Fred Sanders junior, Grim and hard set they struggled, each for each other’s gore.

Nine - fifteen was the end called - the game was won by Joe, Right worthily he played too, against his younger foe.

Now Dainty came on tripping, with Johnson to engage, Both of them were left handed, and both 'were free from rage.

A really fine game here was seen; they bowled across the green, And Downing rarely missed the jack, his bowling was so keen.

And while he made his fifteen the other scored but four, This gave. the Prims a good lift, while St, Giles felt quite sore.

Joe Glover and Jack Wakelam were then and there called out, Joe bowled, quite well, but quickly fell, and lost this well-fought bout.

This made the game exciting, for though the Prims did lead, The game was anybody's as everyone agreed.

There now remains not much to tell of how the fight was won, The last two Prims were. Freddie Johns and E.G.D avis’s son.

Ernest his name, and nature too, for he was quite a. "brick", He played Fred Sanders senior, and nearly did the trick.

Thirteen-fifteen was all he lost, although called on so late, Right well he bowled, and nearly won, tis pleasing to relate.

John Glotham was Fred Johns‘s foe, as everyone could see, A skillful bowler all men know, and right good sport is he.

He bowled with his accustomed skill, but Fred caused many a roar, For when the game was ended, fifteen -thirteen the score.

This epic match may be recalled, and memories oft revive, How Prims from Russell St. did win the contest by odd fiveErnest Downing.

News in Brief Willenhall Singers

Willenhall Rotary

"Willenhall Singers (formerly Willenhall Musical Society) is delighted to announce that a cheque for £1775.00 was presented to Macmillan Cancer Support on 7th December. This impressive amount was the proceeds of the choir's Annual Charity Concert held at Sneyd Community Association, Bloxwich, on 17th October. The photo shows Helen Murray of Macmillan Cancer Support accepting the cheque from Justine Clarke, Musical Director; Pam Proffitt, Choir Chairman and Anne Langley, Choir Treasurer.

The choir thanks most sincerely everyone who supported the evening, in whatever capacity, and looks forward to seeing friends old and new at concerts in 2016.

Our local Rotary Club organised three collections over Christmas and the New Year.

Members also offer heartfelt thanks to Sainsburys Wednesfield, for allowing carol-singing on three weekends in December to boost funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Therefore a further cheque for £443.79 will wing its way to the charity in January. On Saturday 18th December choir members at Sainsburys donated their cash to Wednesfield Rotary Club, members of which were present to raise money for Alzheimers and Dementia. Thanks Wednesfield for your wonderful generosity!

The first was at Boundary Mill during the weekend of 11,12 and 13 of December, the second, at the same place on the 2nd and 3rd January.

They also did the 'Tree of Light 'in Morrison's Superstore, Willenhall between 1st and 24th of December in which people placed dedications to loved and lost ones on the Christmas Tree.

From these three collections the Club raised just over £2000, which is earmarked to go the West Midlands Air ambulance Service, the Walsall Bereavement Support Group and other local charities in Willenhall.

Willenhall Heritage Trust Willenhall Heritage Trust are planning The Lockworkers Memorial, First phase launch on Sunday February 28th 2016 on the Dale Island corner and Bilston St. Willenhall, at 12-00 o clock.

The Mayor of Walsall —Angela Underhill has been invited to officiate at the launch.With the 300 names of Lockworker's of Willenhall inscribed on each brick this should be quite an important and historical event.

The Trust will hold its 4th Willenhall Heritage Day on Saturday April 2nd 2016 from 10.30am till 4.00pm at The Chart Centre, Gomer Street, Willenhall .

Putting Willenhall on the Map How can you have a neighbourhood map that reflects your interests and keeps up to date? Relying on a global corporation or the Ordnance Survey won't do it. Maps are always out of date: they need local people keeping their eyes open, adding features and changes. Want changes that are instantaneous and remain free and open for anyone to use? Pub closed? New housing development completed? Post Office moved? Building demolished? All these can be on OpenStreetMap within minutes.

OpenStreetMap is created entirely by volunteers (currently 2 million globally) wanting to see their neighbourhoods well-represented on a global map. We're just like Wikipedia - anyone can edit anything.

You can see the dramatic detail compared to what most people would use (Google maps). This was mostly the effort of one OpenStreetMap volunteer walking around Willenhall after visiting the Lock Museum. But there's still masses of detail missing. Imagine what it could look like if there were just 5 local mappers!

Willenhall Rugby Union Football Club Ltd.

Willenhall Rugby Club was formed in March 1966 following a meeting at the Neptune Pub in Owen Road Willenhall, by a group of rugby players, myself included, from Rubery Owen RFC, as due to their success they had grown in numbers beyond the two teams ideal for a Rugby Club within the Company Sports and Social Club.

Luckily we had a connection with another Rubery Owen shop steward, Harry Mountfield, who was a Councillor in Essington and through him we rented a pitch for two years from Essington farmers Jack and Arthur Bibby.

This breakaway group was joined by a group of players past and present from Willenhall Comprehensive School with the help of headmaster Dr. Tyack and later Mr Dalton Our first headquarters were at the Neptune pub, courtesy of Mr and Mrs Mills, landlords and parents of our first Treasurer. We later moved to Bellamy House in Willenhall and played at Essington for the first two seasons, then in Willenhall Park moving our headquarters to the Lion Hotel in Willenhall, near the Police Station.

The decision was taken to call ourselves Willenhall RUFC due to connections with the Council through Rubery Owen shop stewards, one of whom was Ray Rollason, our first Chairman. However, the council connec-

Our first President was Mr Sidaway, Managing Director of Ductile Steel and our first Chairman was Ray Rollason. Later, Bill Reid, a prominent Willenhall solicitor of Hall, Pratt and Pritchard became President, a position he held for many years and was instrumental in writing our Articles of Association to become a Limited Company, one of the first rugby clubs in Staffordshire to do so..

In celebration of our l0th anniversary we organised a Charity Concert, at Walsall Town Hall by a Welsh Choir Cor y Brythoniaid, for Willenhall Fellowship for the Disabled.

One player from Willenhall Comprehensive – Tony Vukelic has played for us in five decades at lst team level, a fantastic achievement.

Another Willenhall Comprehensive student – Mike McKenzie, became our Treasurer in our third year, a position he has held on and off to the present day – another remarkable contribution to the club.

These days, along with myself, the club is run

by Martyn Loach (Chairman), Kay White (Junior Chairman), Mike Mckenzie (Treasurer), Ian Law (Vice Chair) and Phil Taylor (Club Secretary) as well as an army of loyal volunteers and coaches.

We are proud to say we are very much a family club and encourage supporters to become social members or full members, which allows them various entitlements such as hire of the venue and access to the gymnasium.

Further evidence of the club’s commitment to bringing on younger players is that we have recently been taking part in the RFU’s All Schools Initiative, run by our coaches Bob Laird and Eric Field. This has involved local schools such as Wednesfield High, Moreton and Our Lady and St Chads.

The club have teams at every age group from under-6 right through to under-19 (colts) as well as having four senior teams and an occasional Veterans XV. The younger teams train on a Wednesday evening, with the seniors practising on a Tuesday and Thursday.

We don’t currently have a ladies’ team, but are hoping to start one in the near future.

Marathon Man

Action and do it in a fun way …. by running in the costume attached I think that my story is interesting because despite being on medication for life to control epilepsy - I have achieved so much in life… running in over 100 marathons around the world; Grand Canyon rim to rim challenge, run from Paris to London (with a marathon at the start and a marathon at the end), breaking world records for treadmill running, running in races of 150 miles non-stop (the 145 mile grand union canal race- I finished 4th twice, 3rd twice and a 2nd place finish).

So despite adversity, I triumphed in my own personal life. In 2006 I was faced with the news that I was to have my right knee completely replaced with a titanium joint (following a fall from my motorbike- this news was again covered by Midlands today.

But despite this, I went on to cycle John O’Groats to Land’s End (twice) and I am the only person in the world to have cycled from the leaning tower of Pisa to the Eiffel Tower to Blackpool tower in a challenge that I devised, arranged and titled ’The Triple Tower Challenge’.

I will be running my first marathon in ten years the last marathon I ran in was London marathon 2006………... a serious knee injury that saw me have my right knee completely replaced left me with the agonising decision to retire from long distance running.

I first took up running in 1993 when I decided to quit smoking and since then I have ran in over 100 marathons around the world, ran across the grand canyon, ran in races of 150 miles non-stop running and broken numerous world records for treadmill running (including the 7 day world treadmill record where I ran in the London marathon on the 8th day) all this despite being on medication for life to control epilepsy that I have suffered since my teens.

Shortly after the 2006 London marathon I faced the upset that an ongoing problem with my right knee was actually a joint that was in need of serious surgery and I was given a titanium replacement knee.

However - I have decided to take on the London marathon 2016 to raise money for Epilepsy

Which school(s) did you attend?

I went to the school on the Walsall Road that was known as the Board Schools. This was my junior school. I then later went to a secondary modern school, St Giles School.

Philip Solomon is Willenhall born and bred and is world renowned for work in the spirit world.

Once referred to by the world’s leading authority on the paranormal, the late Professor Hans Holzer as the ‘greatest medium of our time’.

Editor, Simon Archer catches up with Philip during a break in his busy schedule.

What are your childhood memories of Willenhall?

I always remember Willenhall as being a place that seemed to have lots of characters. A tough place in many ways, but a close-knit community who looked after each other. All my early years revolved around rock and roll in a way, my dad was one of the first DJs as such, running what they called record hops and I was fascinated by the whole period of time, teddy Boys, motorcycles and, yes, rock’n’roll!

Where did you live in the town?

When I was born, we lived at number 5 Shepwell Green in a collection of houses that several generations of my family had lived in. A small two-up and two-down with a party yard shared by two families who were also my aunt, uncle and cousins. Later, I lived on the Walsall Road, right on the corner where it joins the Crescent, in a very big house, several bedrooms, large private gardens, even stables. It was knocked down to build Ackers & Jarretts garage in the 1960s. After that I lived at numerous addresses.

Can you recall any teachers/mates from your childhood?

I remember all my teachers from secondary school and didn’t really like any of them! I think they tended to see us Willenhall lads and lasses as factory fodder or at best shop or office workers! I don’t mean to sound bigheaded, but I knew even then I was cleverer than any of them.

School mates? Oh my gosh, so many years ago!

But at secondary school my best friend was Robert Kennard, other school mates I remember, Tommy Grovenor, Micky Wall, Alan Hives, Johnny Bray, loads of other really but just can’t bring their names to mind.

First kiss? (miss this one out if it’s a bit sensitive) My mom, and apart from that I never kiss and tell – I think it’s very ungentlemanly at any age!!

Who first got you into the spiritual world?

I was always interested in anything to do with the paranormal. Both my grandmother and particularly my mother, were well known mediums. My mother was a life time member of Darlaston Spiritualist Church and for many years its president, so I was always listening to what she talked about to her friends. she used to get on to me at times as I was always interested in all sorts of things, ghosts, hauntings, hypnotism and of course the work of the medium. But it was my mom who first got me into the spiritual world, indirectly at least.

Is there a ‘Blue Plaque’ on the wall now? If not, why?

There isn’t a Blue Plaque to me anywhere, but I’m really honoured that you think there should be. The house I was born in has gone now. Have you been trained or is it a skill that can’t be taught.

I have had a lot of training, obviously again mostly through my mother, my dad as well, and I’ve got lots of bits of paper that say I can do this and that. But I think everybody is psychic.

Full-blown mediumship is something you are born with, but everyone can be trained to some extent to develop their psychic side.

You’re a qualified teacher. Do you still teach today?

I did a post grad teaching qualification and do a few workshops occasionally, but don’t presently teach at any specific university, college, etc. I would love to teach a parapsychology course that involved more mediumship appreciation, so if there are any unis or colleges out there, do come and pitch me for the role!

You’ve written several books. Which was the first one and what inspired you to write it.

The first book I ever wrote was called Ghosts of the Midlands and How To Detect Them. Before my book, there had been many books that told you ghosts stories and gave reports of haunted houses and places. I was inspired to write a book that would teach the reader how to detect them for themselves.

I notice you’ve veered off into football quiz books. Bit of a change from the day job! How did that happen.

I have written a few quiz books. I think the two you refer to from the football world is the Official Wolves Quiz Book and the Official Villa Quiz Book. I am a massive Wolves fan, and family on dad’s side, (he was born in the Austin Village), very much liked the Villa. Studying the history of these great clubs, particularly Wolves, gave me the opportunity to be asked by the publishers to write the official quiz books for the clubs – a great honour. I also come from a boxing family and love that sport too. I just wondered if you know I wrote a quiz book about British boxers’ involvement in fighting for and winning the world heavyweight title. I have many close friends in the world of sport.

to name a few. Might be easier to name a couple of places that I have a sort of wish to still work in and they are Australia, Japan and Norway. Don’t ask me why, they are just places I am drawn to feel I should go and work in and demonstrate clairvoyance and mediumship. Who knows, maybe it’s still in my destiny to do so.

Ok, name some of the famous people you have met.

To be honest, I have been so lucky to meet and work with so many world famous people, I wouldn’t like to pick out or make a list, but if you want to have a look at my website or check back on my career, let’s say I have met a few and leave it at that.

Where can my readers see you in action?

I don’t do the theatre or major venue tours these days, I just think the ticket prices are too much.

But I do a fair few local events and you can always come to see me the first Tuesday of the month at Banks Bistro restaurant in Wolverhampton and the last Wednesday of each month at Ye Olde Toll House restaurant in Willenhall.

Rock and roll throughout the 1950s to the more recent years is always a big part of my show and i have very famous guests on my show, not just from rock and roll but all walks of life, celebrity and local news makers. But I think a nice compliment I had from a Broadcasting legend a few weeks ago was, “My gosh, Philip, your guest list runs like a Who’s Who of Celebrities. Me, I’m just happy to chat away to everybody the same!

Willenhall Trinity Bowls Club

In 1921 Russell Street Methodist Church purchased a plot of land in Charles Street for ÂŁ310 to be used for playing fields. Part of the land was used to put down a Crown Green bowling green. Because they were Primitive Methodists the bowling section was called Willenhall Prims. At the start of each season the President, Sir Charles Mander MP would officially open the green by playing a match against a local; councillor or local dignitary.

“Amy was really unhappy - and unappreciated - in her job and my husband, Paul, had recently passed away, so we both decided we needed to do something different.”

School in Focus Pool Hayes Academy (formerly Pool Hayes Arts & Community School) 2016 and from then on the school becomes known as Pool Hayes Academy. The nature of the change means no major alterations in names, staff, contacts, policies, uniform, etc.

The academy was already going in the right direction and the new academy status is designed to simply carry on the upward trajectory.

Elsewhere, the academy recently celebrated its 50th Birthday, having opened in 1965, though the last two years have seen “transformational” changes since the current Principal was appointed.

2016 proves to be another hectic and exciting year at Pool Hayes Academy - not least because of the name change!

For over 18 months, Pool Hayes governors had been exploring various options for academy conversion before deciding to join the Academy Transformation Trust (ATT), which provides an impressive support network and counts academies in Walsall, Sandwell and across the Midlands amongst its members.

Unlike some other schools, Pool Hayes made a positive choice to become an academy and the Department for Education - impressed by the recent improvements - have supported the view that this change is the best path for further raising standards.

Certainly, when former students take a walk around today’s academy they are shocked at the large-scale renovation. The new Sixth Form Centre and Student Support facility have been recently joined by a refurbished Main Hall and Outdoor Food Court, an extended Library with an Outside Reading Court and Careers Area, and numerous newly resourced classrooms and laboratories.

More recently, the academy secured £40,000 worth of gym equipment which has been installed in their fitness suite, courtesy of Matrix Fitness and Bridge Ventures, and this has been a big hit with students and sees usage tied into good behaviour and attitude around the academy.

In fact, almost all secondary schools in Walsall have already moved to academy status to better access funding, attract more effective support and to have a greater say in their future direction. Indeed, the recent OFSTED Report, which was the strongest the Pool Hayes has ever had, acknowledged the changes instigated by the new Principal, Matt Allman, and how the ATT played a role in actioning those very changes which are continuing to improve provision at the academy.

In a nutshell, the ATT will share best-practise guidelines which all the academies in its network can tap into, and which will ultimately improve the learning conditions for the students.

The conversion date was set for 1st February

of the Community Association was a wrench for the academy but it has been turned into a positive with dilapidated squash courts turning into multi-gyms, dance studios and computer rooms, the community bar into a 80-seater lecture theatre, store cupboards into 1-to-1 mentoring rooms, and the swimming pool is now offered free to local primary schools.

More generally, the academy is orderly and well-managed and so student and parent feedback is very positive. This tone is best advertised by the volume of students arriving early or stopping late for private study and booster classes, as well as the popular Saturday School which attracts between 50-120 students at weekends.

The academy places a very high emphasis on raising aspirations and the extensive careers and aspiration programme recently gained a Quality Award for Careers Education, Information, Advice & Guidance (December 2015). This accreditation recognised the focused university and apprenticeship evenings, the trips to a range of workplaces and work-related settings, a range of outside speakers for students and parents (ranging from universities to funeral directors) and a daily commitment to aiming high and striving to be your best. Indeed, this ‘aiming high’ mantra saw the academy achieve some of the fastest improving results in Walsall last summer.

The academy retains a strong commitment to the local community despite the closure of the Pool Hayes Community Association. This includes support for a range of local charities, including Walsall North Food Bank and Let Us Play, close work with local primary schools and participation in a string of local, regional and national events and competitions. The closure

Like all Principals, Matt Allman, can only move the academy forward with the support of an excellent staffing team and a dedicated governing body. The academy has been supported by new appointments to an extended leadership team, the vibrant workforce is led in seniority by Mrs Williams (36 years of service), but the most important driving force is the fantastic and hard-working teachers and support staff who give their best each day. In addition, the commitment of the governors, especially the Chair (and parent governor) Jacky Thompson, have been integral in steering the academy through some major changes.

Nonetheless, the academy are very keen to acknowledge the energy, enthusiasm and support provided by so many students and parents. It is the children that make any academy a special place and they generate a great deal of pride amongst the staff. The academy emphasised that teenagers can get a bad press, they can occasionally let themselves down, but seeing them shine on a sports field or a stage, presenting cheques to local charities, supporting reading and Summer School programmes for younger children, attacking exams with everything they have, and talking and working with staff late into the evenings and over the weekend, remind everyone on a daily basis that our community’s young people can and will go on to be huge successes in the big, wide world.

Cllr Ian Shires Willenhall and proud of it!

Cleaning Up Our Act You may be aware that Walsall Council is going to a fortnightly refuse collection after March. Now that was not something I supported but I was in the minority when others voted for it to be included in this year’s budget back in February of last year.

The decision has led to fears that there will be an increase in littering and fly tipping. As if things weren’t already bad enough? Currently it costs around £360,000 to clean up after folk who drop litter or dump stuff they don’t want.

Aliens don’t drop the stuff over night, yet according to statistics around 2/3rds of us actually do it, yet only a 1/3 rd of us will admit to it? Either way it’s a cost that we could do without and can ill afford as the Council struggles to meet the austerity cuts demanded of it by Central Government.

Not chucking good money after bad is an absolute no brainer! so in the spirit of this magazines’ ethos – stick to positives I thought that this being the first edition of 2016 it would be a good idea to start the new year off with a new year’s aspiration (resolution may be too big an ask), something to inspire us and spruce up our town.

This year the Queen has her 90th birthday. To mark this milestone Keep Britain Tidy has teamed up with Country Life to launch a campaign to clean up Britain in time for her birthday celebrations. The idea is to bring together an army of volunteers across the country who would like to help clean up Britain.

4. Don’t just recycle in the kitchen. Resolve to recycle in all rooms.

5. Remember to recycle all your paper and card in the green bin. Recycling 1 tonne of paper spares 17 mature trees! Slimmers Raise Pounds burden on the families with children in hospital over Christmas.

Dawn then set about asking her team of consultants and their members to donate any staple or tinned foods, boxes of chocolates and biscuits to their charity throughout November. The members were asked to bring their donations into their Slimming World group and in early December consultants from the Wolverhampton West Slimming World team took over 30 carrier bags and a number of hampers to the house. Not only did they take the donations they also took a cheque for the sum of ÂŁ1149.00 which the team had managed to raise at the annual awards ball.

After visiting a friends little girl at Birmingham children's hospital local area manager for Slimming World, Dawn Rayson was taken to Ronald Macdonald House to be shown the facilities that this amazing charity offers families that have children receiving treatment at the hospital.

Dawn added, “As a team we were overwhelmed by the response we had from our members. The staff of Ronald Macdonald were flabbergasted by the amount of things we took to help the families�.

The house allows parents and other siblings to stay over and use its facilities so they are close to their child whilst they are in hospital, which for many can be a worrying time.

After seeing the support that had been given to the parents and family of local girl, Freya Powers, Dawn felt she wanted to do something to help relieve some of the

Building a brighter future at the West Midlands Construction UTC open day such as programming NAO Robots and using mind control cars, both of which will be available for demonstration to visitors at the open day.

Prospective students are invited to find out more about opportunities at this ground breaking new secondary school.

On Saturday 19th March students from across the west midlands, particularly those in years 9 and 11, are asked to attend the West Midlands Construction UTC’s open day to find out more about how to get ahead in the construction industry. Principal Tom Macdonald invites interested students and their parents to drop in to the UTC’s Northwood Park campus between 11am and 3pm to learn more about the success story so far and how the UTC intends to grow into the future.

One of our current projects is making dementia wool muffs - these are practical items that help individuals with dementia - we are looking for wool donations and any buttons or things we can add to these muffs to improve sensory feelings.

And while we try to make all the work we do fun it does take on a serious element, offering our Service Users a holistic care package ensures all their needs are met.

Willenhall North Update During the festive period the team have been busy working in the Short heath and New Invention areas as well as provided extra coverage for the night time economy in Walsall town centre.

We have conducted a leaflet drop to over 2000 properties in the area with crime prevention advice specifically regarding the winter and festive period.

A successful drink drive campaign was conducted on both High Road and Lichfield Road during December.

An off road bike has been seized in the Rough Wood area adjacent to Harvesters Road. We continue to patrol and monitor the area.

The team recently arrested two persons in regards to vehicle crime in the area, enquiries are currently on-going in regards to this case.

We have also reported several persons for various driving offences and seized several vehicles.

In regards to anti-social behaviour the team have arrested two more persons have been arrested and presented before Walsall County Court for breach of civil injunction.

We continue to tackle anti-social behaviour in the New Invention Square area and are working with partner agencies to deal with any identified offenders.

A review of the overall crime recorded for Willenhall South during December 2015 compared with the previous year has seen a reduction of 14.2per cent that’s 25 fewer victims of crime.

Unfortunately, the beat experienced a murder during this period, of well-known local man Glyn Evans, who sustained a fatal stab wound on 28 December at Walsall Road, Willenhall. The two local neighbourhood teams were given responsibility for security of three forensic scenes between the advent of his death and the new year.

In common with other Neighbourhoods across Walsall, Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire, commercial shop premises have been targeted for cigarettes and cosmetic goods, where a gang has gone to these stores in the early hours, forcing the security shutters and stealing a large quantity of goods. Willenhall town centre was targeted twice, with Super Drug, Market Place, being attacked on 23 December. As a result of this attack, I am pleased to report four offenders were arrested and two have been remanded in custody. As part of this on-going operation, CID officers and our team undertook a series of dawn raids on five suspected offenders' home addresses across Willenhall and Portobello. This operation saw the arrest of three offenders believed to be involved in these offence types.

Again focusing on Willenhall town centre, officers from this team supported Walsall Council Trading standards and Licensing officers by providing high visibility patrols in the town centre during the run up to Christmas, which saw both inspection of goods being sold in both the street market and shops. As a result of one of these operations, one store in the town was found to be selling suspected counterfeit cigarettes,

which resulted in the seizure of 3800 suspected fake cigarettes and the owner of the store being reported for offences disclosed.

drink drive campaign, officers from our team supported by colleagues from Aldridge NHT, conducted a late evening operation near to the Sikh temple in Walsall Road on 19 December, drivers entering the restricted road section were targeted for this and possible drink drive offences. In total 34 vehicles and drivers were stopped and I am pleased to report none were found to be over the drink drive limit.

Crime Reduction

Facewatch Working with store holders in Willenhall and supported by the town centre management, a number of stores and businesses will or have now been trained to assist with the borough wide supported initiative. The aim of Facewatch is to maximise opportunities for businesses to report and share crime information on line. It is achieved via a downloadable application which can be accessed via a computer or other mobile device. This system allows businesses to report crime to the police at their convenience and reduces delays in waiting for an officer to call.

The virtual crime recording permits the police to access the evidence quickly and investigate more efficiently. The scheme has been piloted elsewhere in the West Midlands and positive feedback has resulted in its roll out across Walsall Borough. Personally I welcome the roll out, as we know, Willenhall town centre and larger stores locally experience a number of occurrences of theft from shops and this application will both assist store holder and police alike.

The Willenhall south team currently consist of a Sergeant, two full time Constables, one part time constable and three PCSO's.

Traffic related matters As a result of complaints from residents near to Walsall Road, officers from this team observed by residents have been undertaking a community speed watch campaign during December, which saw Pro-laser speed detection devices being used to monitor speeding motorists with view to challenging speed on our roads and educating drivers. As a result of this operation covering two separate days, 26 drivers will soon receive advisory notices in the post.

PCSO's from our team undertook two pop up type police surgeries during the run up to Christmas aimed at providing and reminding the public of crime prevention issues during the festive season. These took place at Morrisons and Tesco, aimed at maximising engagement with our community. It is estimated that over 100 people were encountered during these pop up events.

Braving The Shave

events, having done a bungee jump and a fire walk in the past, so this was a relative walk in the park for her.

Her initial aim was to raise £500, but this was quickly passed even before the event took place.

Mobile Hairdresser and friend, Dawn Eaton performed the shave on Boxing Day in front of a pub packed with supporters and well-wishers.

So far, Ruth has raised an amazing £2250, with a possibility of more money to come in.

Well, Ruth Drewett and friends did just that at the Navigation Pub, Fibbersley recently.

Ruth first heard about ‘Brave The Shave’ on Facebook and thought “Yes, I could do that”. Quite simply, the idea is to have your head shaved and get friends and family to sponsor you to raise money for MacmIllan Cancer Support.
