I do try to keep the content pretty positive, but I also realise that life isn’t perfect for everyone. Al Anon is a group that meet in Willenhall every week, to help people who have a loved one living with alcoholism. Read more about them on page 26.

News in Brief Sky Dive

Lockworkers Memorial

Three ex-students of St Thomas More have recently completed a sky dive for Compton Hospice.

Willenhall Heritage Trust are almost ready for Phase 2 of the Lockworkers Memorial. The bricks have been sent to the manufacturers to have the names and details engraved and the committee hope that the bricks will be put in place in the next 4-5 weeks. There will be a follow up in the next issue of Willenhall Life.

They took on the daring feat on 23rd July and to date have raised approx. ÂŁ1200.

The three are; James Kidson (on the left), Liam Brittle and Megan Canning. They are all 17 years old and all now attend UTC Health Futures College in West Bromwich. James wishes to become a nurse and the other two, paramedics.

Hi-Ho Silver for Willenhall In Bloom The Willenhall In Bloom team were given a silver award at the Heart Of England In Bloom ceremony in Aldridge in September. Willenhall were one of five towns from Walsall, including Bloxwich and Darlaston. Aldridge and Brownhills went one better and achieved the prestigious Gold award.

The event was held at Aldridge and was supported by Walsall Council.

Cllr Ian Shires Willenhall and Proud of it!

Getting to grips with doing more and more with less and less

the next four years.

That’s on top of the £100 million in cuts that has already been made over the past five years. This has resulted in a reduction in Council employee numbers from over 10,000 pre austerity to less than 3,000 at the present time. Services right across the board have suffered as a result and in some cases have become almost non-existent.

In the recent past Walsall under Tory rule has applied the cuts piecemeal on a year on year basis with no real plan other than to make the books balance. This has stored up a multitude of problems to such an extent that when the Tories handed over control to the new Lib/Lab Coalition in June the Tories admitted that there was no money left!

The summer is over, the kids are back to school and the trees are taking on that autumn glow. Time to take stock of things to come as the days draw in and the nights grow longer.

Nowhere is this truer than at the Council House in Walsall where we are getting to grips with the reality of another four years of austerity measures from the Tories at Westminster.

A little known fact is that Council Tax brings in just 16% of Walsall Council’s current total spend of some £630 million per year. The remainder of the money comes in the form of grants from Government which has to be spent in very prescriptive ways on a variety of services.

To make matters worse the Government sends these grants with the austerity cuts already applied. The reality of this is that we will have £100 million less to spend on essential services like adult social care, special needs and looked after children over

These cuts are being imposed by the Tory Government and will affect every resident in one way or another. Year on year the council will have to cut spending doing more and more with less and less. We are going to have to look very carefully at how the Council delivers every part of what it does.

What has to be done now is preserve crucial services whilst recognising that some of the ‘nice to have’ services may become unaffordable.

Supporting our greatest asset The Council’s Lib/Lab Coalition recognises that the Borough’s greatest asset is its residents and we have said that we intend to continue to support local people and their communities as much as possible.

Walsall Against the Cuts There are those who think that as councillors we should dig our heels in and refuse to cut any services. Well that is a decision that we could be take. However, there is a downside to it.

The Council has to produce a balanced budget each year. As explained elsewhere, the Council get its money from two sources: The Council Tax, which accounts for around 16% of what the Council spends, the rest comes Central Government.

Normally at this time of the year, whoever is running Walsall Council publishes something called a “Draft Budget” for “Consultation”.

More times than not, this usually ends up as the actual budget which is then put to the Full Council in February. Cynical or what?

Is it any wonder residents don’t respond to this type of “Consultation!”

The new Lib/Lab Coalition is scrapping this fiasco. Instead we intend to be totally open with residents and explain what holding the Council Tax increase to no more than 2% would mean in terms of service cuts.

Government grants come to the Council with the cuts already imposed which leaves the Council with a budget deficit.

Estimates for this year suggest the deficit would be in the region of £30 million. In order to make the books balance it would mean that your Council Tax would go up around 29%. No one could justify that sort of increase.

Above 2% increase would need a Referendum. Past experience shows that as residents you value some services above others which could mean increasing the council tax by more than 2%.

Between now and the end of the year other options will be costed enabling residents to ask questions, make suggestions and have a full debate around the budget ensuring everyone that wants to can play their part in deciding what council services look like in the future.

Do Try This At Home…….

To make the best use of the lovely produce on offer at Corbelli’s, try the following simple menu to impress friends and family.

Momma’s Minestrone Chop 2 onions, 2 carrots, 2 sticks of celery, 1 spring cabbage and a handful of celery leaves and parsley.

Heat a large saucepan and saute the carrots, onions and celery in 4 tbsp of olive oil for 10 mins. Add a 450g tin of chopped tomatoes and pour in 2 litres of vegetable stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 20 mins. Add 1kg fresh/frozen broad beans, a 450g tin of cannellini beans, the cabbage, parsley, celery leaves and 100g of spaghetti (broken into small (3cm) pieces. Cook for another 6 mins, then season to taste.

Squeeze in, the juice of one lemon, then add this to the rice and mix thoroughly.

Serve with shavings of the best Parmesan you can afford and enjoy!

Tiramisu Add 3 tbsp of sugar to 6 egg yolks. Beat well until the mixture is light and creamy. Add 500g mascarpone and around 25ml of cognac or brandy, and beat well.

With an electric or hand whisk, beat 6 egg whites until stiff. Fold the beaten egg whites into the mascarpone mixture.

Ladle into large warmed bowls and sprinkle grated parmesan over the top. Serve with focaccia or ciabatta bread.

Lobster and Prawn Risotto Melt 75g butter in a large frying pan and saute a finely chopped onion for about 10 mins. Add 350g risotto/Arborio rice. Cook the rice for 5 mins, stirring all the time. Add a glass of white wine and cook until the mixture starts to dry up.

Add 900ml of (preferably fish) stock, one ladle at a time – each time waiting until the mixture absorbs the last one. Do this until all the stock has been used. Turn down to the lowest heat to keep warm, while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

Pour 350ml of coffee (preferably espresso, but ordinary will do) into a shallow dish along with the another 25ml or brandy/cognac and 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder. Stir well. One at a time, quickly dip each of 15 (sponge) lady fingers in the coffee mixture and line the bottom of a glass dish, approximately 20cm round or square.

Once the bottom of the dish is covered in an even layer of lady fingers, top with 1/2 of the mascarpone mixture.

Dust with 1/2 of the cocoa. Repeat with another 15 lady fingers layer, then finally the remaining mascarpone and a final dusting of cocoa powder.

Chill in the fridge for about 4 hours, then serve!

In a separate pan, heat another 50g of butter and saute a clove of crushed garlic and a little fresh or dried parsley for one minute. Add 12 large prawns and a whole cooked lobster (or other seafood such as scallops), cut into bite-size

Willenhall Karate Kids’ National Success secure victory for the team, which he did in the very final seconds to huge applause.

All four students have recently been selected to represent England at the 43rd FEW European championships in Belgium later this year.

Coaches Mark and Becky Knight were extremley proud of their students “It’s an amazing achievement to represent your country. We see how hard these kids work in training three or four times a week and its really pleasing to see that their hard work is paying off”.

Local Karate students were on top form when they recently attended the Wadokai England Championships in Leicester, the athletes aged between 12 and 15 who train at Sakura Karate Academy in Willenhall won an impressive 12 medals for the club in both Kata and Fighting disciplines.

Emmy (13) and Megan (15) were first to compete at the tournament with Emmy in top form winning through 4 rounds to win the squads’ first Gold medal of the day against an impressive field.

Emmy then moved up a category and was delighted to win her second Gold medal in quick succession.

In the Team Kata event, Emmy was joined by Reece(12) and Ajay (13) and in a close contest our team made yet another final, managing to secure a very impressive Silver medal. The same team then stepped up a category into the over 16’s team Kata, going one better to win a Gold Medal for the squad.

Against a very strong field Ajay then won a hard faught Bronze medal in the 12 -13 fighting category to bring the tally up to nine medals.

eye-opening, doesn’t come close and it really hit home that this is a disease that causes mayhem for everyone concerned. Luckily, these speakers were all recovering (you never fully recover) alcoholics, who were able to say how their lives have been completely transformed. In fact, I knew one of them and I can say, I would never have known he had ever had a problem, such is the improvement in his life.

I like a drink. In fact, sometimes I like a few and I’ve often wondered if I may be considered an alcoholic, but after attending a couple of meetings of Al Anon (for research purposes!) I am fairly certain I’m not.

Al Anon have been meeting on a Wednesday evening at Hope House in Wilkes Street, Willenhall for just over 4 months. Their aim is not to find ways of helping people to get their loved ones to stop drinking, but to offer support and advice to those living with an alcoholic. The Alcoholic doesn’t attend the meeting, just the husband, wife, parent, sibling or friend of the person affected.

Each meeting begins with a reminder of the AA Twelve Steps programme and to reflect why the group meet. They then go around the table to allow members to share their story – but it’s not compulsory!

There are over 800 support groups across the UK, with many more across the world. You can even attend on several American cruise ships, so it’s not hard to find one close to you – visit http://www.alanonuk.org.uk/ or ring 020 7403 0888 to find your nearest if you aren’t in Willenhall It was pointed out to me on my first visit, that ‘No human being can stop an alcoholic from drinking, other than the alcoholic themselves’. Once you have realised that, you can start to change yourself and your attitude to them. But it ain’t easy!

It’s a grey area as to what an alcoholic actually is, but essentially, it’s about not being able to stop drinking, putting the booze before everything and everyone one else, denying you have a problem and lying about the extent of your habit.

On my second visit, I listened to a couple of guest speakers from Alcoholics Anonymous, who shared their experiences with the group. To say this was

As it was put to me, to start the recovery process you usually, have to hit rock bottom, but unfortunately, for some, that means death and in a bizarre way, that can be something of a relief to those left behind, in the same way that losing someone to cancer can provide a release.

The people I met, had an array of stories to share, some quite sad, some absolutely desperate, and some had lost loved ones to this condition. Even those that have lost someone, still attend, which helps them come to terms with their tragedy.

With alcohol, it’s not just about watching someone you love, decline in health. There’s also the financial aspect, with some losing jobs, houses and running up horrendous credit card bills.

The group don’t pretend to have a magic wand, but are very welcoming and many feel this is an extension of their family and a great help as they are able to talk to others who are facing the same struggle as them.

I don’t mind saying that I was quite emotional, the first time I went, as these people are lovely ordinary folk, who reveal to others their feelings and experiences and in some cases it can be quite unpleasant to hear what they are going through.

Privacy and the absolute need for anonymity, prevents me from revealing details, but rest assured, some of these people are at their wits end and Al Anon helps them get from week to week without them having some kind of breakdown.

Al Anon is self-funding and receives no help whatsoever, from any external organisation.

Al-Anon does not offer advice or counselling, but members give each other understanding, strength and hope.

Short Heath Scouts

We are 2nd Short Heath Scout group. Over the last 12 months and we have gone from strength to strength and our group has grown from 19 children in all sections to 48 children, with more children joining all the time. We have also rebranded ourselves to include the Willenhall Flag on our group neckerchief.

We do lots of activities with the children at both our base (Short Heath Methodist Church) and out in the community. We have this year done canoeing down the river, Jungle Jam, Activity day (including archery, climbing, zip wire), Sci-Fest, walks over the local nature reserve, a trip to Pets At Home, the Remembrance Parade, visited the local police station and fire station and covered dementia awareness and much more.

From September we are planning a trip to visit the Walsall Mayor, our group camp at Warwick Castle, Carol singing at the local care home and church, a Christmas party and in between all of this we are working to the all important badges.

All of these activities are completed with volunteers and we are looking for leaders to allow us to continue to give the children the challenging activities they have now.

Football Book For Christmas the Bishop of Nuneaton phone me up to help him with a book he was writing about Nuneaton Borough FC!” Gaining reference status, Mike also sells to public libraries around the country, and football clubs and county associations who are happy to find that Mike has done their research for them! He continues “Most people find football books a somewhat dull read, since league tables and lists of facts aren’t exactly riveting, but instead, Mike prefers to scour hundred-year-old papers for interesting stories about the teams he writes about.

If someone was to buy me one of these as a stocking filler for Christmas, I wouldn’t be too unhappy!

Mike Bradbury is Walsall born, but has lived in Short Heath for almost 30 years. He retired four years ago from local government as a Waste Management manager and has become an author specialising in the histories of long lost football clubs.

Mike says, “Most people dip their toe in the water with a small book, but I went the other way with a near 500 page epic called ‘Lost Teams Of The Midlands’, which continues to sell three years after publication with a large USA publishing house, X.Libris.

In one match in Sheffield, played on what was no more than a rented field, a player chased after a ball which had bounced away into the distance and over a stone wall. The athlete leapt the wall, only to fall sixty feet down a quarry to his death on the other side! In another match, which was on-going, the farmer strode onto the pitch and tore down the goalposts because he was owed weeks of back-rent for the use of the field. Mike also turns his attentions to smaller, local clubs which once were household names, such as Bloxwich Strollers, Short Heath United and Darlaston All Saints who were all professional teams early in the last century.

Because they weren’t too familiar with what they call ‘soccer’ they thought that ‘Aston Villa’ was somebody’s house!

Mike’s next book “Birth of The Saddlers” came about when he was dismayed at the lack of research in other books about Walsall FC, and so he spent two years full time researching, and the book came out in time for Christmas 2014, when it outsold Alan Buckley’s memoirs. With Waterstones, Amazon and several local bookshops now on board, Mike decided that the ‘Lost Teams’ series had to be completed, and this year he spent time travelling around Lancashire and Yorkshire to research ‘Lost Teams of the North’ which has just been published. Mike finds that because his research is done using Victorian and Edwardian newspapers, that many of his customers are either other authors or football historians.

Mike has discovered the lost grounds of hundreds of extinct teams from all over the country as is fast becoming an authority on the subject. He tells Willenhall Life, “I even once had

Karen’s Garden Walsall, B & M Stores, Reedswood and one of the grandparents made a birdhouse.

The garden was officially opened in June 2016 by Deputy Mayor of Walsall, Marco Longhi and crew from Willenhall Fire Station.

Friends and colleagues have been hard at work recently, to create a peaceful garden area to remember Karen Evans who passed away in 2014.

Karen, from Short Heath, was a dinner lady at Pool Hayes Primary worked at the school for seven years and always talked about creating a quiet space for the children to eat their sandwiches at lunchtime.

Her friend, Wendy Mills said, “Karen was adored by the children she looked after and we are still recovering from how quickly she was taken from us. This will be something the staff and children can use to remember her by and will serve a useful purpose at the same time”.

Wendy said, “This was a big effort by many at the school and they all deserve a big pat on the back”. Some of those who helped were; Annmarie Rogers, Jackie Guy, Jackie Cattell, Anne Bratt, Sue Thomson, Claire Nightingale, Janet King and Jayne Watson.

She added, “We hope Karen will be looking down with pride at what we have achieved and hope she would be pleased with the outcome”.

The school are hoping to add more picnic benches to the garden, so that more children can use it. If you would like to donate either a bench or something towards one, please contact Wendy on 01902 368144.

A lot of effort also went into raising money for the materials used to build the garden. A collection was made at the Cross Keys pub and several Cake Sales were held at the school. Support has also been received from local businesses, such as, JTF of

Sporting Khalsa Women & Girls FC down already! After a measly one victory in seventeen league games during the 2015/16 season, the club’s first team looked to be facing relegation. Miraculously however, now assistant manager Steve Barrow, dug the team deep and the Khalsa women managed to win their final five games to avoid the drop by just one point.

Sporting Khalsa Women and Girls Football Club was established in Willenhall ready for the 2015/16 season by current chairwoman Kelly Williams.

The men’s side to Sporting Khalsa was founded in 1991 and has had a very interesting history, playing semi-professionally between 1995-1997 as well as becoming the first Asian semi-professional team in the country to own their own ground, the Abbey Park Stadium.

If anything is to go by, the Khalsa women seem to be set in their ways to follow the interesting history the men’s club have laid

With the experienced Andy Mulligan at the helm this season, Khalsa’s women will be looking to carry on the form that kept them in the FA Women’s Premier League last season. On appointment, Mulligan said “I am excited about the challenge of taking over at Sporting Khalsa and feel with the current crop of players we can continue to develop and move forward to have a successful season”.

The backroom staff at the Aspray have a wealth of experience in Mulligan, Barrow, Ball and Dopazo who are all looking to get the girls up the table. With the first team based at the Aspray Arena on Noose Lane it is easy to come and support the girls, whether it is your first game or your 100th.

After a difficult term last season, the Khalsa Women Reserves have already trebled their points tally! With two impressive victories from their opening two fixtures the reserves look to be improving on a weekly basis.

Based as St Chads Catholic Sports Academy the team will be looking to draw support from Willenhall and its surrounding areas. The reserves are next at home on Sunday the 2nd October against Derby County Ladies. Khalsa also have an under 14, under 16 and under 18’s women’s sides who are still looking for players to bolster their squads.

Willenhall Singers

Hello everyone, I’m Pam from Willenhall Singers. We were formerly known as Willenhall Musical Society. Over the years the music we have sung has changed so much. In the early years (1940/50s) we sang lots of choral pieces and were very successful in competitions.

These days we sing some choral pieces but we also sing more popular music and songs from the shows even some pop. So last October we decided that to reflect the changes in our image and our singing a name change would be appropriate and we became Willenhall Singers.

We sing for local churches and groups to help them raise funds for their own particular causes. Once or twice a year we nominate our own charity and put on a concert to raise funds for them.

In the last few years we have raised £37,000 for local charities in 2013 we raised £2000 for Wolverhampton Multiple Sclerosis and in 2014 we raised £1950 for The Royal British Legion/SSAFA Last year we raised £1775 for our local Macmillan Nurses. This year we have two concerts, on the 9th July we are performing in St Giles Church to raise funds for the local Dementia UK group and on the 19th November, we are back at Sneyd Community Association to raise funds for Parkinson’s disease. Your Local Police Antisocial Behaviour – Gypsy Lane Junction William Harper Rd, Willenhall Recently Willenhall south NHT were made aware of incidents of Anti-social behaviour in the vicinity of the bridge linking Gypsy Lane with William Harper Road, Willenhall, which included suspected drug dealing at this location.

The local Neighbourhood Team have actively patrolling the area, in addition other covert police resources have been used locally in order to gain increased intelligence relating to this offence type. I am pleased to inform you as a direct result of this police activity, an offender was arrested from his car in Wolverhampton earlier this month in possession of a quantity of Class A drugs and charged for possession with intent to supply a controlled drug and will appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates court.

Walsall Swimming And Water Polo Club Officers from Willenhall South NHT were approached to assist a local swimming club in need of funds to support swimming activates for young people across the borough. As a result of an application to the Police Property Act, Pc Wayne Morris from this team has successfully gained support funding to the value of £1000, which can be used by the club to secure swimming facilities for young people and divert youths away from the temptation of crime.

Willenhall By The Sea Event Despite police demands across the borough to police the EDL protest and other events in Walsall, officers from this team were able to share in local events here in Willenhall when the town was changed from its landlocked view to a seaside scape with its own paddling pool and sand dunes. Officers from the team patrolled the event ensuring public safety and providing a reassuring presence locally.
