Dear Reader, It’s been a busy few weeks at Magazine HQ, with the birth of a new baby – no not one of those! – a new magazine: Willenhall Life. Some of you on the Wednesfield/Willenhall border (Broad Lane/Coppice Farm) will receive copies of both publications. It will also be available at local newsagents and convenience stores.

Another major change, is that the Wednesfield Magazine is now free to all. The print order has also been increased by 500 copies to cater for the extra demand. This should also give our loyal and supportive advertisers a better response for their investment. If 500 isn’t enough, we’ll increase it again for the next issue, until everyone who wants a copy can get one.

100 Mile Charity Walk I have just returned from Holland where I took part in an International 4 day walk covering 160km (100 miles) over four days. This is my 25th year of doing this walk, which I started doing in 1984 by taking a team of TA soldiers from 210 Battery RA. This consisted of a 12 man team and we had to carry a 10 kilo pack for the four days. I took a total of 5 teams to do this walk over a number of years and received a team medal each time. After leaving the TA I then entered the walk as a civilian and had to walk 50k (31.25 miles) each day. I did this nine times before dropping back down to the 40k distance again. Each year I have raised money for local charities including; the breast care service at New Cross Hospital (£870), Bushbury Court Nursing Home (£750) Promised Dreams (£500), Air Ambulance (£400). This year although I have not yet collected all the money in so far I estimate I will raise £700. This money is going to a small charity called Remember Gemma Always and is in memory of a local girl who was a nurse at New Cross hospital who died of a rare cancer called Neuroendocrine Tumour and left behind three young children. Next year is the 100th anniversary of this walk and I intend to walk it again.

Below is a photo of me at the end of the walk with my medal standing along side the board which is displayed at the star/finish which shows the number of people starting each day and the drop outs each day.

CRY Wolves team are trying to raise a further £7,000 to have more of these free Heart Screening days in Wolverhampton. It cost £35 per person to screen heart. A lot of funding is required. Our next event is a half- a- marathon in Birmingham October 2015 follow us on #crywolves, or on facebook – crywolves1 All support and donations are welcomed either on our justgiving page www.justgiving.com/crywolves1 (quoting Pardeep Nagra’s funds). This enables all the raised funds to be used for Wolverhampton screening.

CRY Heart Screening Thanks The Nagra family from Wednesfield would like to say a big thank you to everyone at Wednesfield Community Centre for allowing us to hold our recent CRY Heart Screening Event on 25th and 26th July 2015. Where 223 local young adults between the ages of 14 -35 were screened for any heart defects to prevent Cardiac Arrest in the Young (CRY), Sudden Adult Death (SADS). Five abnormalities were detected during the screening hopefully we have prevented family going through a tragic loss of a young a life.

community project. The company had a challenge to collect 2 tonnes of tinned food so that local churches could distribute the food to homeless and vulnerable people. The academy challenge was to collect 1000 tins in one week to support Doosan’s target. The academy collected 900 tins weighing 0.8 of a tonne.

Headteacher, Claire Gilbert, was delighted with the response from the students and their parents and was pleased that were able help in some small way to make a difference to people who are having a difficult time.

New Sponsor For Wednesfield FC Wednesfield Housing Association and the Rotary Club of Wednesfield have generously agreed to sponsor the shirts of Wednesfield FC for the 2015/16 season. Club President, Eirwyn Jones, said, "The Rotary Club are keen to support the club's new management team in their first season in charge. The club raises a lot of money in Wednesfield and, we are always looking for worthy causes to support. Hopefully, this will help them to get promoted back into the Premier Division at the first attempt."

Wednesfield Rotary Fund New Defibrillator Wednesfield Rotary have been busy with another project – helping to save lives. The club’s members recently agreed to donate £2,300 to have a defibrillator installed outside the St Thomas Centre.

AED Donate have joined forces with the Ambulance Service to get 15 machines installed throughout Wolverhampton and it is hoped this is the first of many. Over 100,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest across the United Kingdom each year and the campaign has been launched to fund potentially life-saving defibrillators in the city.

The Reds' new boss, Dean Gill has brought in a lot of new blood and the team have, so far, made a good start, lying second in the table [at the time of going to print]. If any other businesses wish to support the club, please contact Dean Gill on 07930328570.

Wolverhampton North East MP, Emma Reynolds, brings us up to date with her work in the constituency

Campaigning to keep Goodyear in Wolverhampton I am continuing to urge Goodyear to reconsider their proposal to close their factory on the Stafford Road. Goodyear has been an iconic Wolverhampton brand for 88 years and the proposed closure came as a huge blow for all those work there but also for the local economy of our city. Working with the trade union, Unite, I recently called on the company to commission an independent review to see if an alternative to closure is possible. I am pleased that the company has agreed to commission the review.

I want to thank Cyril and all the Unite members at Goodyear for giving so generously to Compton Hospice. It was a fantastic achievement to raise so much money so quickly. I know that the shop are very grateful for the donation and for the generosity that people in Wednesfield and further afield have shown since the arson attack.

Carvers Marathon

I have taken up this matter with the Chancellor and Business Secretary, calling on the government to back the review and to do all that they can to persuade the company to stay in Wolverhampton. I am disappointed that the government has not done more. If the company does goes ahead with their proposals for closure, I will work tirelessly alongside the city council to ensure all Goodyear employees have the best support to find alternative employment.

Arson attack on Wednesfield High Street

I want to congratulate the thousands of people who participated in the Carvers Wolverhampton marathon in September and pay tribute to the organisers for all their hard work. As well as the full marathon, there was the annual half marathon, a 10km run, 20km cycle ride, children's mini marathon and, for the first time, a 3km walk. Over the past eighteen years, the sporting event has become a Wolverhampton institution, attracting people from across the country.

Although I have previously competed in the half marathon, this year I was there as a spectator cheering on all the runners and cyclists. Once again the event raised significant funds for charity.

As a result of the recent arson attack on the High Street, Compton Hospice's stock was damaged.

Members of Unite, who work at Goodyear, have donated ÂŁ2,500 to Compton Hospice's Wednesfield store. I was delighted to present the cheque to Scott Clarke, the store's manager alongside Cyril Barrett from Goodyear who spearheaded the fundraising drive.

I want to congratulate our Mayor Ian Brookfield and "Team Mayor" for meeting the cycling challenge. Councillor Paul Sweet also deserves a special mention. He has lost nearly seven stone as part of a weight loss challenge and has worked incredibly hard to be in brilliant shape to run the half marathon. It is a fantastic achievement!

In My View Thoughts of Cllr Phil Bateman MBE Tales From Our Canal Towpath!

Every month there is something new to report, it seems, on activity taking place on ‘our canal’ here in Wednesfield. The Wyrley & Essington (WE) canal has been with us since the 1790’s and is still making a huge contribution to our everyday lives!

In August there was a ‘Floating Market’ held. We had seven trading boats taking place in this event and moored at Bentley Bridge. Estimates made at the time placed attendance of visitors at around 800 over the two days the market traded.

The traders reported that they faced very different trading levels. But in all they have urged that I arrange a similar event for next year! So that is what we shall do, again I will try and arrange a ‘Floating Market’ for the first weekend in August 2016. This will I hope coincide with the Wednesfield History Society (Battle of Wodensfield Day).

I want to thank our local police team who are now performing a number of patrols, along the towpath.

They play a valuable role in creating the assurance that Narrow Boat owners and other towpath users want to see, during these events.

I received a lot of negative comments, from towpath users, that the large willow trees that drape the canal-side were to be cleared, to be made way for a canalside development. As the site opposite the Bentley Arm fronting the New Cross Hospital has been sold and Planning Permission granted which will axe the trees from the waterside. I enquired with the Planning Department what the situation was, and here is the response I received.

“Outline Planning application 14/00083/OUT for New Cross Car Park, Wolverhampton Road for the construction of a medium secure unit and a block of 14 apartments with all matters reserved except for access was submitted 3 February 2014.

So as we drift towards the end of this current year, our canal has again helped draw people to its water, and its tow-paths. We have a really great waterway.

It is packed full of English wildlife, and flowers. It is currently being worked up into a Local Nature Reserve status.

This year 2015 has been a great year for the Wyrley & Essington canal here in Wednesfield. It’s been a very busy 9 months for our grand old canal.

Estimates suggest that during the first 9 months of this year there has been close to 80 boat movements on this canal. In 2007 CRT told me that there had only been 50 movements in the WE in the whole year. We know now that as many as 57 boats will have ‘overnighted’ in Wednesfield by the end of September! Plus the year has not yet ended.

The exciting news is that the canal has provided some 114 ‘overnight tourists’ and if each of them have spent £20 in the High street, pubs and stores, and entertainment outlets. The village economy would be £2280 better off as the result! That folks is a very conservative estimate of spend!

Now a quick look towards October and the end of the year - I can inform you that during the first weekend in October, a pop-up market will take place again at Bentley Bridge, and I will be welcoming six trading boats - The Jewellery Boat, Flavours Afloat, PJ Fenders, Lollipop Sweetie Boat, Golden Boyz Doggie Gifts & The Home Brew Boat!

Oh and just to add some music and light to the October event a busker has now been confirmed too, Linda Simpson fabulous guitarist & singer.

You have to say that this year on our ever more important canal we have really been very active…..!

Here are the magnificent Willows, which are soon due to go.

The application was reported to Planning Committee at its meeting on 23 September 2014 where it was determined that whilst the proposal would result in the loss of these mature trees, the site being bought back into use along with job creation and the proposed development providing security as a result of overlooking, along with new tree planting outweighed the loss of these trees.

The proposal was subject to a S106 agreement which has been agreed and planning permission is being issued.”

23rd World Scout Jamboree

The World Scout Jamboree is held every 4 years and this year was the 23rd event. Only during the Second World War and Iran 1979, due to the revolution was the Jamboree cancelled, ironically I was selected for Iran as a Scout. The 23rd WSJ was held in Japan and there were over 36,000 scouts from 150 countries making it the biggest international gathering on Earth.

feeling and the site rung with laughter, dancing and singing in every language, instrument and national costume that you could imagine.

Mine began in Aug 2013, where the leaders had to under go a selection process to choose the 4 leaders to lead the unit, very similar to what the young people would have to go through for selection. In October 2013 I was advised I was selected along with 3 others.

The temperature’s was relentless at 44 deg, tents reaching 55 deg and the humidity meant you were always soaking wet, and resulted in a strict regime of making everyone eat and drink plenty. We were given an additive for the water called Pocari Sweat to replace body salts, and this helped our unit with dehydration.

There was however hundreds hospitalised with heat exhaustion and dehydration over the 2 weeks, we were very lucky with just a few minor injuries and sun burn.

Out of 120 applications, we then had to select the 36 scouts that would be going to Japan. At our first meeting together we had to drop the bomb shell that almost immediately £700 was needed for their deposit, and then the balance of the £2995 would be needed over 4 other instalments over 14 months, an enormous task , £120,000 for the Unit.

The Jamboree consisted of modules that the YP attended, with programmes on; Nature ,Water sports, Culture, Science, Global Development, Peace (where we visited Hiroshima, the museum’s and the peace gardens). The Bomb dome was very moving and especially as it was the 70th anniversary of the bombings in the next 2 days.

So 2014 was a very busy year with dozens of bag packs, catering events, quizzes and for our training we had 5 camps including JOTA, canoeing, assault courses, Scuba diving, hiking, bowling, ice skating, drop in’s, presentations etc. I always wanted the build up to Jamboree to be as much part of the experience as the actual Jamboree itself.

There was also a Cultural day, we all dressed in old fashioned Black County dress and had some games, cooked food for samples, had squash drinks and had visitors come to our site as we also visited all the sites around us, to have a dinner made up of tasters from Brazil, Switzerland, Ireland, Sweden, Finland etc was quite special.

On the 11th July 15 we flew from Birmingham airport with Emirates to Narita airport in Tokyo, a 30 hour journey before we arrived at the NYC (formerly the Olympic village). We were all very tired, hot and sweaty, as a heat wave had hit Japan and temperatures were over 440C with 95% humidity! A theme that continued throughout our whole stay. Early the next day we were off exploring and over the 3 days we did the Tokyo Sky tree, the National Earth Quake Centre, Shibuya crossing, Tokyo live festival, Joyopolis, Yoyogi Park and the Meiji Shrine.

The 12 days passed quickly and before we knew it, it was time to strike camp, have the closing ceremony and our last night under the stars.

Then on the Tues after another early start we caught the Bullet Train down to Yamaguchi. This was a great high speed experience passing through the beautiful country side at nearly 200 MPH. The journey was app’ 6 hours and with air con most took the opportunity to grab some sleep. Arriving at Kirara Hama we had our first taste of a Jamboree, meeting many different nationalities as we walked nearly 3 KM with our kit to get to the camp site, the site was huge at over 3-1/2 km x 2-1/2 km and our home for the next 12 days.

Morning’s started at 4am to collect breakfast, but with some sleep the buzz of the campsite could be felt, with nearly every nation on Earth being represented and with them all wanting to say ‘Hi’ or high 5 it was a great

The coach then left the site and a beautiful (if anyone was awake) 6 hour journey to the prefecture of Kochi.

We were taken to there civic hall to be greeted by many dignitaries and a very warm welcome. We had the formalities and gave our gifts from the Mayor of Wolverhampton and Dudley and scrolls of thanks for MP Pat McFadden to the people of Kochi. They sang to us and we sang the Beatles to them, again a memory that will last for ever. They took us to a hall, with paper doors and reed mat floor before a team of women in traditional dress then came out and did a traditional tea ceremony for us all, very special indeed. Not finished yet we then were taken to the tables where baskets of food were brought out, all the fish etc that you could imagine, and some was even cooked… but it was brilliant. It was now that the unit in pairs were taken away by their host families to experience the real Japan.

And now is it over…………………….? Our legacy will be to promote and help the next adventure to the 24th WSJ in West Virginia , USA, Canada and Mexico.

Local Historian Ray Fellows looks back at Pickering’s shop, Wards Bridge School and Jennie Lee Pickering’s I recently spent a few a few hours in the company of a delightful young lady called Margaret Enoch, she is 83 years of age, born in 1932. Margaret recalls her memories of living in Wednesfield; My mother’s name was Vera Maud Pickering, better known as Cis who had three brothers.

My father was William Leslie Enoch, he came from Willenhall and my grandparents were William Palmer Pickering and Maud Evelyn Kelly, she was from Willenhall.

I have two brothers, Bill who will be 85 in July and Peter who is 80. I also have a sister, Mary Elizabeth she is 79.

Bill worked for Chubb’s and later moved to Ilkeston.

Peter went into the Air Force as a medical officer and was stationed in Bahrain, but when he came out of the RAF he set up as a Doctor in Ilkeston. In 1998 he was made an OBE. Mary now lives in Edinburgh.

official opening of the school, but at the time there was little doubt that part of the school would be open in September and that many Wednesfield children would at last be able to complete their education in their own town. The school did open on the 4th September, and when fully completed, the school covered 28 acres, 20 of which were playing fields.

The school buildings were impressive, and gave a pleasing illusion of spaciousness and light. There were two magnificent gymnasiums with changing rooms and showers, a fine science block and library, practical training rooms where boys and girls would be given instructions and practice in woodwork, domestic science, sewing and typewriting, with the best up to date equipment; a huge assembly hall and a smaller hall which were used as a dining hall, there were twenty four form rooms. The school eventually housed between 8-900 boys and girls.

We lived at 9 School Road and my grandparents had two shops, 3 and 5 High Street but they were run as one shop.

One part was the barbers and the other part sold tobacco, toys, china, and other things. Adey’s green grocer was the shop next door at 7 and 9 was a shop that was called simply, the cake shop.

Wards Bridge was conducted on the house principle, a method that has been found excellent for centuries in fostering community spirit in a large organisation where otherwise the pupil may feel at a loss. There were four house names after four old Wednesfield families, Gough, Tomkys, Clare and Fryer. Pupils would assemble in their own houses and from there, disperse to various study groups. They would belong to the one house throughout their school career. Mr Kenning then the head of Wards Bridge paid tribute to Dr Tyack, headmaster of Willenhall Comprehensive School, who had acted as host to the Wards Bridge contingent since the previous September.

He had done everything in his power to enable them to grow together into a little community of their own. His help and consideration had been absolutely invaluable and Wednesfield owes him a debt of gratitude. He had only arrived in the January to take up his own duties at Willenhall and found that as well as organising his own school and staff, he had two other schools as guests; Wards Bridge and Wednesfield Girls High School.

We moved from School Road to go and live with my grandparents at the High Street shop, but in 1935 we were told that the shops were to be demolished so we moved across the road and set up the shop in a house called ‘Trebavah’, which was 2 High Street. As you walked into the shop the ladies hairdressers were to the right up a few steps, the main counter sold papers and tobacco, as you walked to the other end of the shop there were a couple of steps and then a door to the right led to the gents hairdressers, toys and other items were sold.

My mother and father split up around 1936, Eric my uncle died, and shortly after my grandfather William died. I never married and stayed at the shop. Around 1957/1958 my mother and sister and I moved to 1 Fredrick Road.

Margaret Saunders was our neighbour at number 3.

I went to the same school as Frank Morby and I was in the WAAFS from 1951 to 1953. I went on to become a school teacher, first at Ashmore Park Primary school then at Moathouse School. I retired in 1992. Pickering Road was named after my grandfather William Palmer Pickering, because, in the 1940s he was a member of the Council.

William started work as an apprentice hairdresser at Mr and Mrs Peters’ shop, in Stafford Street Wolverhampton and Mr Peters’ wife Elizabeth, known as Lizzie was William’s older sister. Pickering’s shop was established in Wednesfield Village around 1896 and in 1957/58 the shop became known as Charlesworth’s.

Wards Bridge School In July of 1956 Wednesfield’s new Secondary Modern School was near completion. The Education Authorities at the time were cautious about giving any definite date for the

Wards Bridge closed as a school in July 1989 and the building became the Jennie Lee Professional (Teachers) centre in 1990.

Jennie Lee Centre Prior to 1966 Wednesfield was part of Staffordshire and in 1963 Miss Jennie Lee was elected as a Labour MP for the Cannock constituency, which encompassed Wednesfield.

This meant that she often visited our village and on one such visit she was accompanied by Wednesfield Labour Councillors and after touring the market, Miss Lee addressed shoppers from a loudspeaker van and told them that she had been collecting evidence to test the claim that a family of four could feed quite well on £5 a week. “I do not profess to be a very good housewife, but I do find this statement hard to believe” she said. She spoke of a widowed pensioner who said she could spend £3 a week on food “with the greatest of ease” and of one family she met who spent £10 a week on food without luxuries. An analysis of national incomes showed that there was less

than £5 a week going into more than 4 million homes in this country and less than £10 a week going into about 10 million homes. “I would like to see everyone earning a decent family wage so that a comfortable standard of living can be maintained without the mother going out to work if she does not wish to do so.

What is quite wrong is that mothers are forced out to work to get a standard of life which nowadays, is perfectly proper to have” she said. She was looking forward to the next labour government which would be profoundly concerned with the everyday problems of the home including the food bill. “We want the kind of Britain where everyone is given the chance of a job with fair conditions,” declared Miss Lee. “We have a long way to go yet before we can say we have reached that position”.

Prior to the building of Wards Bridge in 1956 the site was all farm fields, it is more than likely that the fields were owned by the Lewis family as they also owned the sites where Wednesfield Grammar School was and also the fields where March End School once stood. Geo Lewis is listed in the 1940 Kelly’s trade directory as owner of Bridge Farm. Incidentally the barns to the farm stood just before the bridge on the side of the canal and when these were demolished Wards Bridge club was built. Were you once a member of that club? It is now a Seventh Day Advent Church. The Jennie Lee centre/Wards Bridge school site was purchased by Taylor Wimpey towards the end of 2013 and work commenced on demolishing the buildings with over two hundred houses are earmarked to be built on the site. In August 2014 the first few houses had been built and people moved into their new homes. Some of the street names on the site have taken their names from the house principal used by the school, in so doing it is preserving those old Wednesfield family names of Gough, Tomkys, Clare and Fryer.

St Thomas’ Church School June Taylor wrote in to say; I attended the school in 1951, our headmaster was a Mr Ellis. I was born in Wood Avenue, and we moved to Hall Street which was off Rookery Street when I was 3 years old. We lived there until I was 15. I went to work in the Corn shop in Rookery Street just across the road, which I believe is now a Chinese take away.

Mr B Lewis wrote in to say; I attended the Church school 1932-1934. We left the old school where William Bentley court stands in about 1932 and marched over to the new school that is now St Patricks School. I saw the Lancaster bomber as it flew over Amos Lane and the playing fields on that day in May 1945 and the black plume of smoke as it crashed down on the Lichfield Road. I was in the R.A.F. for 6 and half years and had just come home after 5 and half years abroad - the last 4 years as a P.O.W. in Germany. I was living with my parents at 35 Woden Avenue, It was a lovely day and I had been sunbathing in the garden when this happened, it was about 4 o’clock in the afternoon.

I have been writing another book, which is different to anything that I have done before. It’s about an Anglo Saxon family that lived in Wednesfield prior to the battle of 910. Because parts of it are of an adult nature, a member of the WV11 team suggested calling the book, 50 shades of Ray. The actual name of the book is Lar - An Anglo Saxon Warrior. It is not quite finished yet, but if all goes well it could be out by the beginning of November.

Since then, Rupert has visited over 100 care homes, schools, Birthday parties and suchlike, much to the delight of those who have met him.

Rupert nearly didn’t get to do any of this as he was destined for the meat market, before Elaine bought him.

Rupert, a 20-year-old horse from Madeley in Shropshire, recently visited Bentley Court Care Home to allow residents to stroke, brush and pat him as part of a reminiscence session organised by staff members, Michelle Henley and Mandy Bennett.

At first glance, this may seem a bit odd, but trust me, I was there, and it worked wonders.

Elaine Whalley set up BE-Equine in 2010 and after her Gran, who was very close to Rupert, became too unwell to visit him at his stable, Elaine took Rupert to see her. When she arrived with the horsebox, she was greeted by a crowd of residents at her Gran’s care home. Elaine thought that it was such a shame that more people couldn't benefit, so she, with the help of Jan Whalley, her Mum, rolled out Equine Interaction to those who wanted it. Rupert has become a

How many people were competing at the World Championships?

I didn’t count how many people actually competed but there were 33 countries involved. Most countries sent one or two teams, except China, who sent nine teams. In my categories there were 44 people in both competition sets. The categories are divided into men and women but it is an open age range, so anyone over 18 can compete.

Wednesfield woman, Nicola G. Day has just returned from Portugal, where she came away with not one, but two gold medals in the 6th World Health Qigong Championships.

The Wednesfield Magazine catches up with Nicola, who lives just off Linthouse Lane, to find out more about her successes.

For those that are unfamiliar, what is Qigong?

Qigong is a branch of the Internal Chinese Martial Arts: we say, “Old root, different branch”. Qigong is the branch of internal martial arts which is specifically designed to promote health and well being. It has different forms (or groups) of exercises which are specifically designed to work on different health aspects, for example there is the Yi Jin Jing, specifically designed for improving the muscles, bones and joints or there is the Ba Duan Jin, which is specifically designed to improve the health of someone with stress, anxiety and depression.

Qigong is often taught with Tai Chi Ch’uan, which is the fighting form of internal arts and is often described as ‘Kung Fu done slowly’.

Are there different types of Qigong and Tai Chi? There are many forms in both Tai Chi and Qigong and they stem from four main families of martial artists in China, the Wu, Yang, Sun and Chen families. Each different form has different signatures or key moves, for example; the Sun Style is characterised by a ‘follow step’ and is a ‘small frame’ form, Yang Style is a more ‘open frame’ form characterised by low, long steps, Chen Style has explosive movements and Wu Style has a ‘leaning’ quality. Each family form has Qigong sets to accompany it and over the past ten years, the International Wushu Federation (IWUF based in China, ‘Wushu’ is the term used to describe Kung Fu based arts) has created a number of standardised forms to be practiced by all practitioners. These are the sets which are used in competitions and they consist of ‘Sports Qigong’, which are quite gymnastic and require balance, strength and flexibility and ‘Health Qigong’ which look very simple moves but, when practiced correctly and frequently, can improve the health of anyone with medical problems and be practiced to prevent disease.

Were the Chinese gracious in defeat?

This is going to be an odd answer if you’ve never competed or seen a competition of Chinese Martial Arts... The Chinese were excluded from the ‘World’ competition because the IWUF feel that the Chinese are so much better than the rest of the world, they do not compete against them. So there was the ‘Chinese’ competition and the ‘World’ competition. It’s a bit uneven because the judges are even instructed to score the rest of the world differently, in fact there were quite a few uneasy moments when we watched Chinese athletes make mistakes and fall but still get better scores than those that had done a clear round. I spoke with one of the European judges, who explained to me that the scoring system for the Chinese was different than for the ‘World’ athletes. For example, there was a minimum score prescribed to the Chinese athletes and a maximum score prescribed for the ‘World’ athletes. This used to be the case for Tai Chi too, but World Tai Chi competitions have now been going for so long, we are scored together and on an even playing field as the rest of the world has proved they can be as good and as dedicated as the Chinese. Qigong competition is a fairly new concept and it will take a while before the scoring becomes uniform, but that’s why it’s important to compete and show that the rest of the world has athletes as dedicated as China.

How did you first get into Tai Chi and Qigong?

I was living in Exeter doing my final year of study at university and was chatting to someone about missing my gymnastics (I was an elite gymnast before going to university) and that person suggested I try Tai Chi and directed me to a class which was being advertised in the local arts centre. I went along to my first class having no idea what tai chi was and was hooked from the very first class; it was such a beautiful, poised and strong art. The thing that drew me to it was the feeling of total relaxation and calm felt whilst practicing. Also, I discovered that 90% of the people that had been drawn to the class were people in high stress jobs looking for stress relief. As I was practicing to become a teacher, I thought this was the perfect fit for me and my choice of career.

What category/disciplines did you compete in?

I competed in the Sports Qigong sets of Yi Jin Jing and Wu Xin Ji or Muscles Tendons and Joints form and Five Animals forms.

Both sets demand strength, balance, flexibility and poise. The Yi Jin Jing has very big stretches and the Five Animals set is

Who was your first teacher?

My first teacher was a Yang Style teacher in Exeter named Angus Clarke. He was, and still is, an incredible teacher and player. Watching him reminded me of watching water moving and within a few minutes of being in his company, the stress just melted away. Unfortunately, I moved abroad within 6 months of meeting Angus and had to practice alone in my new country.

In 1999, I met my current teacher, or Master as we say in the tai chi community, Master Faye Li Yip. This was a very auspicious meeting as her father Professor Li Deyin is one of the most highly regarded Martial artists in China. I have studied under the teaching of Master Faye, her husband, Master Tary Yip and her father and mother, Professor Li Deyin and Madam Fang Mishou ever since, and they have coached me to many medals and honours in Tai Chi. This was my first time competing in a Qigong competition.

Where do you practice now?

I practice mostly by myself at Nuffield Gym just off the Stafford Road, where I also teach a couple of classes a week. I have 1-2-1 sessions with Master Faye Li Yip at The Chinese Arts and Culture Centre in Telford whenever I have a big competition on the horizon. Master Faye and Master Tary also run weekend seminars regularly at the centre and I go to as many as I can afford to go to.

You teach Tai Chi as well. Where and when?

I have a few classes a week: Monday- Beginners and Improvers Tai Chi and Qigong Class at The Chinese Arts and Culture Centre, Telford Tuesdays – Beginners and Improvers Tai Chi and Qigong Class at Fibbersley Park Primary School, followed by and Advanced Class.

Thursdays – Beginners and Improvers Tai Chi and Qigong Class at The Polish Club, Stafford Rd., Wolverhampton, followed by Advanced Class.

Fridays – Qigong Class at Nuffield Gym Saturdays – General Tai Chi and Qigong Class at Nuffield Gym More details are on my website: www.holisticday.co.uk How old do you have to be to start?

There is no age limit but it is a slow art and children are often better suited to Kung Fu than tai chi and qigong (though the youngest I’ve taught was 10 when she began). However, there have been many recent studies that suggest teaching young children tai chi and qigong helps them learn how to focus on studies, how to control emotions and generally become a more balanced individual. It teaches compassion and empathy and how to observe and react with a calm mind and most importantly, how to deal with stress. There is no upper age limit!

Anyone can begin to learn tai chi and qigong no matter their current state of health and fitness, everyone has to start somewhere but regular practice will stabilise blood pressure, relieve stress related problems, improve the condition of people who are recovering from serious illness, improve the condition of anyone with balance related problems, and there are many more benefits. A quick google search of ‘benefits of tai chi’ will bring up hundreds of pages of research on the subject.

What age can you continue to practice Tai Chi? There is no upper age limit, my Master, Professor Li Deyin is in his 70’s and is still practicing daily and is spritely, supple and strong. If someone is not too steady on their feet, tai chi will improve their stability within 6 months (lots of research and personal experience backs up this claim). Qigong can be done standing, sitting or lying down and will provide an exercise that will boost the immune system.

We probably know your proudest moment, but what was your most embarrassing?

I can’t think of an embarrassing moment but there was a heart stopping moment as I arrived at the airport hotel on the way to the World Championships to realise I’d forgotten my flight tickets! Fortunately, my nephew had an app that turned a picture of the forgotten tickets into scanned documents.

Where will you be competing next?

Well the season is coming to a close and there are not any big competitions in the next few months but it will start again with the Tai Chi Union British Championships in Oxford in April and the World Tai Chi Championships in Thailand next year. I was invited to a Tai Chi World Championship in Bangladesh in November, but my forms are not ready, as I’ve been concentrating on Qigong, so I’d rather wait and go out to compete at my best next year. There will be the London Traditional Competition in May next year and there will be a traditional forms competition run by the British Council of Chinese Martial Arts next year some time but they have not confirmed the dates.

How long will you continue to compete?

How long is a piece of string? I retired from competition in 2008 when they rejected Tai Chi as an Olympic sport, but competing in China in March this year brought me back into the competition ring, where I won the individual event and won bronze in the team event. I had forgotten that competing is not about winning, it’s about being a better player and being driven to improve by having goals to improve scores and being inspired by watching the high quality of other players. I will continue to compete as long as I still want to improve and deepen my understanding of the art.

Why isn’t Tai Chi an Olympic event?

The short answer is there is a general consensus that the Chinese would win all of the events! Another answer from the IOC is that they already have enough martial arts in the Olympics. However, it was shortlisted a few months ago for the 2020 games in Japan. So we have to keep our fingers crossed.

Any advice for beginners?

Do your research and check the lineage of your teacher. Don’t be afraid to ask where your teacher has studied the art, someone with quality tuition behind them will not be upset at this question. Ideally, they will be registered as teachers with either the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain (TCUGB) or the British Council of Chinese Martial Arts (BCCMA).

You don’t have to be brilliant from the first class; it’s a very individual sport. You don’t have to be fit to start with, that comes with the training and we say that all egos are left at the door. Tai Chi and qigong have SO many well researched health benefits that the best time to start is today! There is no special equipment needed just loose fitting clothing, flat soled shoes (plimsolls) or bare feet and a bottle of water. Give it a go! You’re not going to be puffing and panting but you are going to be sweating and using muscles you didn’t know you had!

You can meditate your way to fitness. Just go along to your local class and have a go!

The Children’s Village opened in May 2005 serving Wednesfield and Heath Town. Over the last 10 years the services to children and families have grown significantly and now includes Ashmore Park. The Children’s Centre has engaged 1000s of families from antenatal to five years old within this area who have accessed our many services on offer.

The Children’s Centre was recently inspected and was rated as ‘Good’. Family Support Workers Offer one to one and group support on a range of services for children and families. Our family support workers are based within The Children’s Village and are available on a day to day basis to offer support/ guidance on practical issues from positive parenting to health advice and many more.

the then Rector Revd John Craig. Fifteen prospective members were present and it was agreed to form an ‘interim’ Probus Club.

On the 5th November the first Annual General Meeting was held and it was decided to change the status to a formal Probus Club. Geoff Marsh was elected President, Stan Rixon Vice-President, Stan Harvey Secretary and Walter ’Middy’ Midwood Treasurer. A year later the membership had grown to 26.

Since then we have had membership as high as the thirties but we have now dropped just below that. Altogether over the yeas over 80 retired gentlemen have enjoyed the fellowship of meeting together for lunch and the enlightenment of listening to guest speakers on a wide range of subjects.

The Probus Club movement was formed in the United Kingdom in 1965. Often sponsored by Rotary International, Probus Clubs cater for the interests of retired or semiretired professional or business people. Each club is autonomous. The movement is now almost world wide. Since 1985, the Rotary International Board has encouraged Rotary clubs to initiate projects that address the needs of a growing senior (over age 60) population

We have met on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at various local hostelries, The Wood Hayes – now demolished, The Red Lion – now no separate meeting room, The Castle – meeting room decreased in size, The New Pear Tree, The Nickelodeon – both meeting rooms turned to Whacky Warehouses and now we have returned to The Castle – which is now the only venue we could find that still has a meeting room and serves hot meals at lunchtime..

In 1985 Geoffrey Marsh, who was a member of Rotary, took steps to initiate the formation of a Probus Club in the geographical area of Wednesfield, writing letters and collecting a list of names of those who showed interest.

Wednesfield Slimmers Join The Fun all around the area Bradley, Oxley, Willenhall, Bilston and Bushbury. It was lovely to see so many people with all different fitness levels come and take part. Some completed the 5km distance and others did whatever they could manage.”

Preparations started in May this year when Dawn approached local businesses to ask for donations. Tesco in Willenhall donated 120 bottles of water, Iceland donated 160 ice lollies and local training company Succeed made a donation to help proved all participants with a medal.

On Saturday 9th August, over 200 Slimming World members descended on West Park to take part in Slimming World does Race For Life.

The slimmers came along to take part in the event which was none competitive and those taking part could choose the distance they wanted to complete. The event took place to help raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK. The ladies were cheered on by friends, family and also local people from the community, some of whom joined in themselves.

As well as raising money for Cancer Research UK, the aim for Slimming World does Race for Life is to raise awareness of how keeping a healthy weight and keeping active can help reduce the risk of certain cancers.

Dawn continues “I'm excited to see how much the event has raised, from donations received on the day, the total is already over £100”. The money raised will help Cancer Reseach UK to fund pioneering, life-saving research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Flowers & Balloons Wolverhampton Judo Club For all occasions

A brief history of the Wednesfield based club

Wolverhampton Judo Club was formed in 1966 by Mac Abbotts and Dave Brooks and is ranked as one of the UK’s premier judo clubs. Over the years the club has celebrated many successes and is particularly proud of the many International and National players who have achieved medals status from both Olympic and World Championships.

The club has a permanent mat area, providing sessions for all participants, both male and female, from the age of 5 years upwards. All coaches are experienced competitors have been CRB checked, hold HSE First Aid Certificates, attend Child Protection & Long Term Development courses and hold a BJA Coaching award.

The club caters for visitors of all abilities, whether able bodied or a person with special needs, through to someone who simply wishes to just enjoy a recreational sport or the more serious players who wish to compete in Area, National and International competitions.

From day one the club has flourished and the membership steadily increased. Mac and Dave quickly realised that in order to ensure the club members could compete with players from other clubs and indeed from other countries, it would be necessary for them to attend as many competitions as they possibly could, simply to keep abreast with the current techniques, thus enabling their own players to work on and develop their own individual styles.

This basic principle worked well and became a major element of the clubs strategy. Mac and Dave had begun to develop a strong personal relationship, understanding and rapport and this, allied to the training systems that they had developed began to produce a partnership and ultimately a club that was clearly going to achieve significant successes in the future.

The club is open four nights a week Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with sessions run by Senior Club Coaches Kevin O’Reilly and Billy Kelly both who started at the club as young school boys in the early 1970’s. As youngster along with a number of other members from the club they emerged as serious contenders for the honours at most domestic championships. Kevin and Billy were soon to be followed by Elvis Gordon, John Swatman, Kerrith Brown, Densign White, Tom Brindle, Michael Chamberlain, and many more. By the mid 1970‘s, Wolverhampton players were dominating the majority of the junior championships and by late 70’s at the ages of 15 years old, members were taking medals at many senior competitions.

The 1980s were virtually dominated by Wolverhampton Judo Club with players winning medals in the majority of the major international championships including the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

In 1984 and 1988 three and four players respectively, out of the seven-man Great Britain Olympic squads were from Wolverhampton with Kerrith Brown winning bronze on both occasions and Dennis Stewart also taking a Bronze in 1988.

From 1980 to 1992, virtually the whole of the Midland Area Men’s Team selected for the National Teams Championships came from Wolverhampton. The Midland Area won the gold medal on every occasion with the exception of 1984 when four of the team were in Japan, training for the Olympic Games. The list of achievements is almost endless and far too great to list; however, there can be no doubt that Wolverhampton Judo Club probably has the best record by far of any judo club in the country.

In November 2006 the club was forced to move to its current site near Wednesfield Park due to the closure of Heathtown Baths and in the same year the club was awarded the BJA/Sport England Club Mark and the BJA Club of the Year award. These awards were mainly a result of the hard work and efforts of Kevin O’Reilly and Billy Kelly respectively who have been running the sessions at the club for the past 20 years and have continued the work of Mac and Dave in gaining success with many members achieving national and international recognition, including Gemma Howell representing Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Both Kevin and Bill both trained together from the age of 12 and competed for many years collecting medals as a Junior, Senior and Veteran at a high level, they are now passing on their experience to other members of the club.

Three years ago Kevin was diagnosed with Oesophagus Cancer and thanks to the research that had been done over

the years he is luck to not only be here today, but also able to continue coaching and taking part in a number activities.

During this August members of Wolverhampton Judo Club who Kevin coaches and teach took part in a "Sponsored Throw" to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Members including Kevin would see how many throws could be achieved within a minute. Kevin wanted to return the support that he had benefited from and help raise as much money as possible. The support from members, family and friends had been fantastic and the club would award a trophy to the person who raised the most money and a player who did the most throws. Kevin created a Just Giving web page and raised £1100.00 then with the cash raised by the club it totalled £3337.00 for Cancer Research UK. Kevin still being competitive did 53 throws in a minute which was the most achieved, but as the organiser did not want to accept a trophy, therefore, awarded trophies to Richard Peace for the senior with 37 throws, Shane Davies and Billy Ryder as joint first in the Junior Boys with 40 throws each and Billy’s twin sister Georgia Ryder in the Girls section with 35 throws.

The senior member who raised the most money was Dave Mills who has only been doing Judo for a few months and raised £155.00 and the junior trophy went to Connor Harvey for raising £205.00.

On 13th September Kevin organised a small competition for a number of members at the club to give them the opportunity of experiencing a competition. Medals and the awards for the “Sponsored Throw” were presented to the young players by Kate Daiders of Cancer Research UK.

Your Local Police Newsletter Sept 2015 In this edition of the Newsletter I thought I would give you a flavour of the roles and responsibilities of the Wednesfield Neighbourhood team. Hopefully it will help you to understand how we prioritise our resources and demonstrate the diversity of the issues that we deal with. All of the examples below have taken place since the last edition of the Wednesfield Magazine in August.

ASB team to tackle problems such as littering, wildlife destruction along the canal towpath and tenancy issues where individuals are not adhering to their agreements and causing problems for members of the community around them.

The team regularly visit all the schools in the area and provide talks to educate young people about a range of issues such as road safety or drug use. We conduct school patrols in respect of inappropriate parking etc. We also receive visits from groups such as cubs, scouts and guides in order to engage with young people to provide appropriate advice.

The team conduct initiatives, such as crime prevention surgeries at local shops and petrol stations. Bentley Bridge, Pound Stretchers and Tesco Express are examples local to Wednesfield. We organise diversionary activities, such as the very successful ’Blue light in the Park’ over the summer holidays where on six separate dates we attended local parks together with the fire service to provide enjoyable activities. The team also, for the 5th year running, co-organised a fishing competition with Fatty’s tackle shop, in order to give local young people opportunity.

As you are aware I have responsibility for Wednesfield North and South which includes Bentley Bridge, the High street and the Strawberry Lane Industrial estate. We currently have five Police Constables and six Police Community support officers on the team.

Within those finite resources we also manage abstractions from duty such as training and annual leave.

As a local Neighbourhood team we have responsibility for a number of facets of policing. The team respond to live incidents of crime and provide reassurance visits to many victims. There have been over 200 incidents recorded since the start of August 2015 and close to 800 calls to service in Wednesfield alone. In respect of the calls to service the team are obviously supported by call takers and other resources within the policing family. Many of the calls are minor issues but each call/report needs to be prioritised accordingly. Every call is important to the caller.

We try to keep the community well informed by attending community meetings, updating our social media sites and providing Newsletters such as this.

We provide a police presence at local community events such as the recent ‘Battle of Wodensfield’ re-enactment, school fayres and Princes trust presentations and aim to reassure community members at events such as the World cycle speedway event at Wednesfiled Aces. Some great events, bringing focus locally, policed locally. On that point, through the police property fund, we recently supported a successful application for funding at the local cycle speedway track. We are currently supporting other applications by local organisations.

Patrol strategies are put in place in order to prevent crime at demand locations such as shop theft offences at Bentley Bridge. We also highlight and patrol emerging hotspots in order to prevent crime such as an increase in Burglary or vehicle crime offences.

The team currently manage a number of Anti-social behaviour (ASB) non crime incidents, ranging from groups of youths causing noise issues to neighbour disputes. We work in partnership with City Council agencies and Wolverhampton homes

The list is not exhaustive but gives you an idea of our duties.

Crime recorded in Wednesfield is one of the lowest areas in the city. Independent survey show that confidence in policing in Wolverhampton is the highest in the West Midlands area. Disappointingly, I sometimes receive feedback from ‘members of the community’ that the police ‘don’t do anything’, I hope you will agree that we work hard to serve our local community. If members of the public really want us, we are accessible. If an issue is raised with the local policing team we will do our best to rectify or solve it.

The team manage a number of known offenders and have a responsibility to engage with them several times a week in order to intervene with criminal activity, prevent offences and prosecute if required. We prioritise intelligence and execute warrants as we have done recently seizing a quantity of illegal drugs.

The team co-ordinate over 50 Neighbourhood Watch schemes locally and react specifically to any issues raised. We also prioritise the concerns of the community through the PACT meetings. For example if speeding is an issue we conduct speed watch or drink driving campaigns. If parking is an issue we focus efforts on education, prosecution and removal of illegal vehicles and report back through the meetings.
