Dear Reader, Well, it’s Happy Birthday to us, as the magazine is now two years old. It only seems like yesterday, when we did the first School in Focus (Corpus Christi in Ashmore Park) and the first interview - Kristian Thomas – who was also pictured on the front page. A week or so later, I showed the magazine to a potential client and he said, “Yes, I’ve seen that, but thought it was a Health & Fitness magazine. Oh, well, we survived to tell the tale.

So, what has the magazine done for Wednesfield in the last 24 months? Well, apart from promoting local businesses to residents on their doorstep, hopefully, we have introduced readers to what’s going on around them; from nature reserves to book clubs, judo clubs to history societies, community associations to charity shops, darts players to dance academies and the list goes on.

Holy Trinity Heath Town The Open Church season at Holy Trinity, Heath Town begins on March 5th, and runs through to early November. Each Saturday morning the church is open from 10.30 for a couple of hours for anyone in the local community, or those visiting the churchyard, to come in. If you just want to have a look around the church, are curious about what we do, or just want a chat with someone you are most welcome.

Free refreshments are always available and we have a programme of regular events each month that you can join in if you wish.

On 5th March there will be clergy available if you want to discuss any wedding or baptism plans at the church. If you want to find a family grave in the churchyard or are interested in looking into your family history then call in on the 12th.

You will find us on Bushbury Road, opposite the park (look for the church spire), parking is available. We would love to see you there.

Lyndale Park For the last three years or so, myself and residents living near the boundary of Lyndale Park/Ellards Field have been experiencing anti-social behaviour by groups of children using the park.

Last year was particularly bad, so we contacted local councillors and the Police to try and improve the situation. Thanks to the persistence of Cllr Greg Brackenridge, plus the support of the Police, positive action was taken and within about 3 weeks, the situation was resolved and we have been able to get back to our relatively peaceful lives. So, on behalf of all those affected, I would like to thank the agencies involved for bringing a swift end to this episode.

A Misunderstanding

The Friends Group for Mental Health and Disabilities The Friends Group here in Wolverhampton recently completed the groups second walkathon on the recently. The event started from the St Patricks church hall and proceeded to walk towards Heath Town Park for the main walkathon event. The group were joined on the day by many people from the local community who were pleased to join in the days’ proceedings.

The main aim of the event, in aid of The Friends Group for Mental health and Disabilities was to challenge the stigma towards the most vulnerable group in our society today who are the most

News in Brief Bob Simmons On Wednesday Jan 13th Bob Simmons' funeral took place at the East Chapel, Bushbury Crematorium. Bob was a councillor on the old Wednesfield Council and worked tirelessly for the people of this area. I and others believe that they should be told just what he did for them.

When Ashmore Park was being built many of the streets and roads were named after councillors, which is why we have Simmons Rd. He was on the Police Committee for many years and became Chair of the Police Pact meetings before his illness. Which used to be called the Ashmore Park Police Liaison Meeting and he was a regular attender since the first meeting on 11th March 1992. He also worked for the Tenants and Residents Association, Neighbourhood Watch, Pickering Rd Community Centre, The Community Centre when it was at Coppice Close and more recently for Hands on Wednesfield.

Bob was hardworking, a gentleman and a friend to many I and many more will miss him.

Wednesfield Probus Club

For 2016 the club has elected Mrs Joyce Pope as its first lady president since it became a mixed gender club. Mrs Pope has chosen the Stroke Rehabilitation Ward at West Park Hospital as her charity for the year.

The club meets for lunch at 12noon on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at The Castle on Wood End Road. Lunch is followed by a short talk, “Around the West Midlands” by Ian Bott in February and “Local Photography” by Dave Kingston and Ray Hawthorne in March. New members are always welcome.

Christine Strong – Help For Heroes In December, we told you about Christine, from Hair by TLC’s aim to raise £5,000 for Help For Heroes. Since we went to press, she’s been busy running, cycling, posing for calendars and much more, including; Bridgnorth 10k Run, Beckbury Trail 9k run, Charity calendar (see pic) working her day off with all the takings going to the charity, 10-mile pudding run and 3-hour charity spin.

Her next challenge is on Sunday 28th Feb; The Coventry half marathon....total raised so far...around £3000!

At the January meeting the Wednesfield Probus Club, Mrs Carol Trigg accepted a cheque for £450 from the club on behalf of Guide Dogs. The money was raised during the club’s 2015 activities for the President’s Charity.

Last year’s President John Pinkard, Carol Trigg, Flora her Guide dog and Joyce Pope current President.

Paycare confirmed as Founder Patron of Wolverhampton Youth Zone Wolverhampton-based health cover provider, Paycare, has been confirmed as the latest Founder Patron of the city’s new £6 million Youth Zone.

Alice added: “There is no let-up in the number of community investment enquiries we are receiving from business leaders and local companies who want to be associated with our project. We are benefiting enormously from the lead taken by our principal funder, Wolverhampton City Council plus major employers like Marstons plc, and philanthropists such as Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant.”

The School Street facility – named The Way – opened its doors in January with a host of sporting and cultural activities for young people aged 8 – 19, and up to 25 for those with disabilities.

Paycare is investing £75,000 in The Way over the next three years.

General Manager of The Way, Alice Davey said: “It’s great to see an established and respected not-for-profit institution such as Paycare investing in the future of Wolverhampton and its young people. Paycare has been around since 1874 but as an organisation, it has the vision and foresight to invest in the Midland’s first ‘next generation’ youth zone.”

Kevin Rogers, Chief Executive of Paycare, said: “We are hugely proud of our Wolverhampton roots and are absolutely delighted to be supporting such a wonderful local initiative as The Way. As an organisation we are passionate about protecting and promoting the wellbeing of those across the region, and the launch of this fantastic facility will ensure that the city’s young people have a safe, nurturing, and inspiring place to meet, socialise and enjoy.”

manufacturing of Man Traps, which of course it is famous for, sadly this mining history seems to have been somewhat lost.

The Ashmore Park Colliery in the 1800’s supplied some 231 jobs at its height for local people. It was according to local historians a very deep mine, and to keep the Mine dry it had to have a Pumping House located alongside the colliery. I believe that this Pumping House was somewhere in the vicinity of where the Wednesfield Aces have its track and clubhouse now.

Ashmore Park and its Tragic Mining Past Many people who live on Ashmore Park know only of its history as being an over spill estate for Wolverhampton families in the 1950’s, when it was first mooted and constructed. But I want to tell you a little bit about the history before that period.

Ashmore Park has a rich coal mining history.

Perhaps it is not easy to recognise where that history was located as the many signs of coal mining have been wiped away. I hope that in this article I will be able to give you a glimpse of what has taken place!

The coal when it was mined was apparently driven by a tramway (rail road) from the Ashmore Park Colliery direct to the Wyrley & Essington Canal.

There it was loaded into canal barges and floated away to the towns that needed coal in the Black Country and further afield.

Recently an Archaeological dig has taken place to try and locate the Tramway. I am in touch with the archaeologists and further information will be forthcoming. In 1875 Ashmore Park Colliery had 231 people working coal. 184 below ground and 76 above ground. This was a fair size pit, but the company that owned it only went into liquidation as late as 16 November 1948.

When I was youngster and first moved onto Ashmore Park at the end of the 1950’s, I would with friends visit the old slag heaps that were located where the Ashmore Park playing fields are now.

They had clumps of Gorse growing from them and they were rich in Linnets who used to nest in the Gorse!

Of course it was the slag heaps that were the great give away to mining activity! After the housing estate had started to grow with more homes built, the slag heaps were removed and the Council filled the ‘hole up’ with household waste, put a clay cap on the garbage and then created a Park on the top!

This is the Ashmore Park (Playing Fields) that we all know today.

The daily grind of earning a living of men and women in Wednesfield, Willenhall and Bloxwich, at that time was very much bound to the great coal seams that existed then and still exist now.

It has a very valuable record of events and I am pleased that they have researched this colliery in the way they have. They inform me that there were a number of deaths taking place at this Pit. This is what they have said following research of their own –

• “Samuel Harper, 31, an experienced shot firer, in 1884, managed to blow himself into small pieces, after trying to ram home a charge of powder with an iron bar.

• In 1885, John Davis, was crushed to death after getting wedged between a loaded tub and the roadway wall.

• Richard Fryer, 27, was killed in an explosion of gas in 1889, Richard Willetts, 66, was killed when someone knocked out several roof supports, and his eldest son, William Willetts, 45, died when struck by falling coal in 1893.

• Black Country Musings state (www.BlackcountryMusings.com) “The last recorded death here was in 1894, when a gas explosion put out the lights of one Richard Jeavons, aged 24, as he was leading his horse back to the underground stables.”

I have also done some further research and I have found yet another death; this was the death of a Joseph Pritchard at the colliery, he was a young man aged 24 and in 1898 he was killed in an explosion at the site. Joseph was employed as a Stallman. According to Durham Mining Museum- They list the Stallmans as an occupation as – Stallman Sub-contractor in charge of a “stall” or working place.

I am sure you will agree with me as you read this article that this local history is worthy of some recognition. This history is so rich in human endeavour and heritage, and so tinged with industrial disaster for the families of local people, that I believe that we have to do more.

We can define and remember Ashmore Park in a way that we haven’t as yet.

It is with this uppermost in my mind that I have asked a local Church Leader to meet with me to support a Remembrance Service to remember the poor souls that lost their lives in the heart of Ashmore Park and is what is now the centre of our local community. In those days of mining coal.

I wonder if there are still relatives living in Wednesfield, Bloxwich, Willenhall of the men that died? If there is, and perhaps you are a relative, would you contact me, and we could see what can be done to remember the contribution that these men and their families have made to our local history.

Personally I would like to see a Wolverhampton Civic Society ‘Blue Plaque’ displayed on a public building in Ashmore Park bringing the history, the deaths, and the part the land played, in the history of Wednesfield to the attention of residents and visitors alike now and into the future.

I want our history and heritage to be for ever celebrated and never lost. Our History is very much our future.

Ruth Drewett

Braving The Shave

Centre, is no stranger to these kind of events, having done a bungee jump and a fire walk in the past, so this was a relative walk in the park for her.

Her initial aim was to raise £500, but this was quickly passed even before the event took place.

Wednesfield Hairdresser and friend, Dawn Eaton performed the shave on Boxing Day in front of a pub packed with supporters and well-wishers.

So far, Ruth has raised an amazing £2300, with a possibility of more money to come in.

Asked if she had anything else planned, she replied, “Never say never!”

How do you turn a very serious subject into a barrel of laughs and raise a load of money in the process?

Well, Wednesfield’s Ruth Drewett and friends did just that at the Navigation Pub, Fibbersley recently.

Ruth, from Lyndale Park, first heard about ‘Brave The Shave’ on Facebook and thought “Yes, I could do that”. Quite simply, the idea is to have your head shaved and get friends and family to sponsor you to raise money for MacmIllan Cancer Support.

The search for Wolverhampton’s Young Citizen 2016 has commenced and entries for young people can be made online through the dedicated website – www.wolverhamptonyoungcitizen.co.uk.

Entries can be proposed by parents, schools, employers or friends for any young person who undertakes any form of service to the community without financial reward.

The rules for entry are quite simple, the candidates must be aged under 19 on 31st August 2016 and either be at school or work or live within the Wolverhampton City

Entries for young people with a Wednesfield origin have been very prominent in the shortlists for the last two years with Kashmire Hawker, a Low Hill resident and student at Heath Park Business and Enterprise College, picking up one of the two “runners-up” awards in 2015.

Kashmire earned his award for his work with the organisation – Changing Young Lives – a rights based organisation which works with children, young people, and adults to enable them to obtain their rights no matter what their disability. In addition, he has an ambition for a career in politics and is currently the Vice-Chair of the UK Youth Parliament where he also promotes opportunities for young disabled of all ethnic origins ensuring that their voices are heard.

So come on Wednesfield, let’s make it first prize this year!

“Amy was really unhappy - and unappreciated - in her job and my husband, Paul, had recently passed away, so we both decided we needed to do something different.”

Discover the Staffordshire Hoard

at Wednesfield High

offering a range of activities in its Craft Café, including the chance to make an Anglo-Saxon brooch.

People can discover the fascinating story of how the Staffordshire Hoard was found and saved for the nation in an interactive exhibition coming soon to Wednesfield High Specialist Engineering Academy.

Treasure! Discovering the Staffordshire Hoard features high quality replicas of objects in the Hoard, showing how they might have looked when first crafted.

A short film includes an account of how this incredible find was revealed by metal detectorist Terry Herbert, while visitors can also try their hand at detecting metal, cleaning a piece of the Hoard or don a costume to help bring the Anglo-Saxons to life.

Councillor John Reynolds, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to learn more about this amazing discovery and the history of the region, and I’m delighted that we are able to welcome this exhibition to Wednesfield High.

“The Staffordshire Hoard is the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork ever found. It includes more than 3,500 items dating back to the 7th or 8th centuries, the time of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, and this display details how it was found and is being preserved for the nation.”

The exhibition will be on show at Wednesfield High Specialist Engineering Academy, from Tuesday 15 March until Sunday 10 April, 2016, in association with Wednesfield History Society.

Slimmers Raise Pounds burden on the families with children in hospital over Christmas.

Dawn then set about asking her team of consultants and their members to donate any staple or tinned foods, boxes of chocolates and biscuits to their charity throughout November. The members were asked to bring their donations into their Slimming World group and in early December consultants from the Wolverhampton West Slimming World team took over 30 carrier bags and a number of hampers to the house. Not only did they take the donations they also took a cheque for the sum of ÂŁ1149.00 which the team had managed to raise at the annual awards ball.

After visiting a friends little girl at Birmingham children's hospital local area manager for Slimming World, Dawn Rayson was taken to Ronald Macdonald House to be shown the facilities that this amazing charity offers families that have children receiving treatment at the hospital.

Dawn added, “As a team we were overwhelmed by the response we had from our members. The staff of Ronald Macdonald were flabbergasted by the amount of things we took to help the families�.

The house allows parents and other siblings to stay over and use its facilities so they are close to their child whilst they are in hospital, which for many can be a worrying time.

After seeing the support that had been given to the parents and family of local girl, Freya Powers, Dawn felt she wanted to do something to help relieve some of the

Building a brighter future at the West Midlands Construction UTC open day such as programming NAO Robots and using mind control cars, both of which will be available for demonstration to visitors at the open day.

Prospective students are invited to find out more about opportunities at this ground breaking new secondary school.

On Saturday 19th March students from across the west midlands, particularly those in years 9 and 11, are asked to attend the West Midlands Construction UTC’s open day to find out more about how to get ahead in the construction industry. Principal Tom Macdonald invites interested students and their parents to drop in to the UTC’s Northwood Park campus between 11am and 3pm to learn more about the success story so far and how the UTC intends to grow into the future.

Tom reflects on the WMCUTC’s success story so far: “it’s been fantastic! Our amazing group of students – with interests ranging from architecture to civil engineering; computer programming to hardware development – have rapidly turned from school children to young professionals. They’ve been working with employer mentors from the industry and preparing their specialist work experience placements. Our rich and academically challenging curriculum has led to some of our students getting job offers for when they leave, having already been talent spotted by major companies in their field.”

Sainsbury’s Seek New Charity

Sainsbury’s Wednesfield are on the lookout for a new charity to support.

Wednesfield’s largest retailer supports many causes and organisations throughout the year, such as scouts, football teams and suchlike, but they have one official charity, which they themselves help to raise money for.

Over the past six years, Sainsbury’s stores have selected a Local Charity of the Year to partner with, raising over £7 million.

For the last two years, locally based Let Us Play have been the chosen charity and have seen a real difference to their fundraising efforts. Let Us Play provide sports, arts, play and outings for children with special needs and disabilities in Wolverhampton and the surrounding areas.

Kim Hatton, from Let Us Play said, “Being Sainsbury’s Wednesfield charity of the year has meant so much to Let Us Play. Unrestricted funding is the hardest to get as it pays all those essential bills and sundries which funders don’t

like to fund; Things such as insurance and accountancy. Not glamorous but essential to organisations such as ours. We have been able to do several bag packs which have raised over £5,000 and the additional publicity is very welcome as raising our profile is of great benefit.

The staff have been warm and welcoming and we have made lots of new friends. We are really sad our time with them is coming to an end and want to most sincerely thank them for their kind and generous support.

Whoever becomes next year’s charity will become part of a very special group of people.”

School in Focus St Alban’s Church of England Primary School, Ashmore Park

The school opened in 1965, led by the first Head Teacher, Mr O’Carroll. On July 3 2015, the school held a party to celebrate its 50th Birthday. The Mayor and Mayoress attended along with representatives of Lichfield Diocese, Governors and parents/carers. Pupils prepared the food for the party and led guests on 'A Voyage Through the Decades'. Each class researched a decade from the 1960s to the present and detailed the highlights of each decade through songs and speaking. Pupils also bought ice creams from the ice cream van which attended, patiently queuing up alongside the Mayor!

The school engaged in Comic Relief in 2015 and will be participating in Sport Relief on March 18 2016, having also participated in 2014. Raised money for Save the Children for the last three years by having 'Christmas Jumper Day' in December.

St Alban’s opened in 1965 and is one of the smaller schools in Wednesfield. It has 160 pupils, with six full-time and eight part-time members of staff, from Nursery up to Year 6.

Executive Head Teacher of the Federation of St Thomas' and St Alban's is Mrs Helen Morris. Head of School at St Alban's is Mrs Joanne Jones. The school has strong links with the church and the Chair of governors is Rev Nick Watson of St Thomas’ in Wednesfield.

The school has its own School Council, pupils elected by their classmates to represent them in the community, something all the school staff think is very important for children.

Community is very important to St Alban’s. In March, they will be participating in Sport Relief.

They also raised funds over the Christmas holidays, as the school choir sang at Bentley Bridge and The Hub on Griffiths Drive.

by Mrs. L. Turley and they recently performed carol singing in Sainsburys, Bentley Bridge and at The Hub, Ashmore Park raising valuable funds for the school.

In June 2015 the school took the children out to visit several local attractions; Year 6 went to Red Ridge Outdoor Centre, Wales.

Reception visited Pendeford Mill Nature Reserve for pond dipping and minibeast hunt.

Year 1 went to Walsall Art Gallery, Nursery popped up to Essington Fruit Farm to go strawberry picking and used them to make jam for the 50th Birthday Party.

Pupils' achievements are celebrated at weekly 'Celebration Assemblies' where each teacher nominates a 'Star of the Week'. The class with the highest attendance receives a special round of applause, as does the House with the highest points. Every half term, pupils with 100% attendance receive a special certificate.

They have weekly Sports Club (Autumn term = Multiskills, Spring = football) led by Soccer 2000.

Reading Week will take place again this year (29 Feb to 4 Mar). Members of the local and wider community will again be invited to read to different classes. World Book Day is celebrated within Reading Week by pupils dressing as characters from their favourite books.

Going For Gold?

Wednesfield To Enter Heart of England In Bloom

Local community volunteer group, Hands On Wednesfield held a public meeting recently, to gauge the interest of local residents and businesses to enter Wednesfield into the Heart of England in Bloom competition for 2016.

Around 25 people turned up for the meeting to see a presentation about the competition and to talk about ideas and potential projects.

Representatives from Bilston In Bloom were also on hand to offer advice and share the experiences they gained in achieving a Silver Gilt in 2015.

The next meeting will be held on at 7pm on Thursday 11th February at the St Thomas Centre – everyone is welcome!

So, why should Wednesfield enter Heart of England in Bloom?

• Taking part can genuinely transform neighbourhoods. It's not just about planting more flowers - entering the competition can bring economic, environmental and social improvements to local communities.

• Those who have already taken part have seen improvements such as: • An increase in civic pride as local people take on planning and managing their neighbourhood.

A healthy discussion followed with several areas for improvement identified including the Gardens of Remembrance, the north side of St Thomas Church, the piece of land on the corner of March End Road and Neachells Lane, and several more, plus offers to take on projects by groups such as Princes Trust and the Scouts.

It is hoped that, at the next meeting, a few more businesses will attend as they are the ones that can make a big difference to the overall outcome. It is also hoped that schools and other local groups will take part so everyone can play a part in the event.

The plan is to invite the judges over as close to 2nd July as possible as that is St Thomas Day, which would fit quite nicely for the village.

• A boost to the local economy through increased tourism and commerce.

• Significant and long term regeneration of disadvantaged areas • Stimulation of voluntary work and co-operation between community groups and local people.

Spiritualist, Medium, Clairvoyant, Healer, Broadcaster and Author Philip Solomon is world renowned for work in the spirit world. Once referred to by the world’s leading authority on the paranormal, the late Professor Hans Holzer as the ‘greatest medium of our time’.

Editor, Simon Archer catches up with Philip during a break in his busy schedule.

Who first got you into the spiritual world?

I was always interested in anything to do with the paranormal. Both my grandmother and particularly my mother, were well known mediums. My mother was a life time member of Darlaston Spiritualist Church and for many years its president, so I was always listening to what she talked about to her friends. she used to get on to me at times as I was always interested in all sorts of things, ghosts, hauntings, hypnotism and of course the work of the medium. But it was my mom who first got me into the spiritual world, indirectly at least.

My radio show on WCR 101.8 FM. Er – it’s not Community Radio anymore – just WCR 101.8 FM, is all about my music and memories. Rock and roll throughout the 1950s to the more recent years is always a big part of my show and i have very famous guests on my show, not just from rock and roll but all walks of life, celebrity and local news makers. But I think a nice compliment I had from a Broadcasting legend a few weeks ago was, “My gosh, Philip, your guest list runs like a Who’s Who of Celebrities. Me, I’m just happy to chat away to everybody the same!

Have you been trained or is it a skill that can’t be taught?

Where can my readers see you in action?

I have had a lot of training, obviously again mostly through my mother, my dad as well, and I’ve got lots of bits of paper that say I can do this and that.

But I think everybody is psychic. Full-blown mediumship is something you are born with, but everyone can be trained to some extent to develop their psychic side.

You’re a qualified teacher. Do you still teach today?

I did a post grad teaching qualification and do a few workshops occasionally, but don’t presently teach at any specific university, college, etc. I would love to teach a parapsychology course that involved more mediumship appreciation, so if there are any unis or colleges out there, do come and pitch me for the role!

You’ve written several books. Which was the first one and what inspired you to write it.

I don’t do the theatre or major venue tours these days, I just think the ticket prices are too much. But I do a fair few local events and you can always come to see me the first Tuesday of the month at Banks Bistro restaurant in Wolverhampton and the last Wednesday of each month at Ye Olde Toll House restaurant in Willenhall.

The first book I ever wrote was called Ghosts of the Midlands and How To Detect Them. Before my book, there had been many books that told you ghosts stories and gave reports of haunted houses and places. I was inspired to write a book that would teach the reader how to detect them for themselves.

Nicky Thompson Wednesfield people are reaping the benefits of a college education, with two former students from City of Wolverhampton College now owing their own businesses in the area!

Former bookkeeper Nicky Thompson, who studied part-time for the Level 2 qualification in beauty and Level 3 in massage at the college’s Metro One campus, kicked-off her new career by setting up her own mobile beauty business – Lavandula Blu - and it was such a success that she opened her own salon in Lichfield Road, Wednesfield.

Nicky said: “It was daunting going back to college after such a long time but I’m so glad I did as it’s changed my life in every way. I’ve got so much more confidence now and it’s great to know that I’m making people feel good and making a difference to their lives too.

“It’s fantastic to have my own business and when I look around my salon I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved – and it’s all thanks to the college as if I it hadn’t offered the course I wanted on a part-time basis I’d never have been able to do the qualifications that have led to my new career.”

This Page Could Change Your (Child’s) Life Quite simply, getting the children to walk (to begin with) then run, one mile per day, every day has improved their levels of fitness and – here’s the clincher – not one of the school’s Primary One (5-6 year-olds) were overweight, when measured by the nurse.

So, after just 16 months of doing the Daily Mile, none were obese and none were overweight.

Paul Singh is on a crusade to tackle child obesity. What’s more, he’s found a tried and tested way to improve the latest shocking statistics. Here’s a few;

The benefits don’t end there. It has also enhanced their focus in the classroom, made them more aware of health and wellbeing and helped their social skills as they tend to chat to fellow pupils and teachers as they walk and run the mile.

• 70% of Wolverhampton adults are overweight or obese.

• 13% of the city’s 5 year-olds are obese.

• This will rise to 25% by the time they leave school.

• More than 50% of Wulfrunians do no exercise at all.

• By 2020 almost half of the city will be obese.

Paul, who lives in Wednesfield and represents Penn as a City Councillor, has seen evidence of a trial by a school in Scotland that has had amazing success in just over three years.

Paul has asked the Council to recommend this to all school’s across the city and is hopeful that this will be adopted as soon as possible.

As Public Heath Director, Ros Jervis puts it, “It’s a ticking time bomb, we’ve got to act now”.

So come on Wednesfield, let’s lead the way. Ask your child’s school to adopt this scheme.

Memories of Our Wednesfield Local Historian, Ray Fellows looks back at the Canals of Wednesfield Bentley Bridge, from New Cross Bridge to Church Bridge there were at least three coal wharfs, New Cross wharf, Victoria wharf, (Joseph Foulkes) and Bill Betts coal wharf that was positioned close to Church bridge in Graiseley Lane where the TOC ‘H’ used to be. During the war, the people from Nordley Hill and surrounding area used to fetch a bucket of ‘slack’ from there because they couldn’t afford coal.

W & E looking towards Barn Bridge 1950s The Wyrley and Essington canal was built primarily for the movement of coal from Wyrley Bank to the junctions with the Birmingham Canal Navigations (BCN) main line canal at Horseley Fields Wolverhampton. The canal also had branches to a colliery at Essington and a longer one to Birchills near Walsall. It was engineered by William Pitt and a portion of it was opened by August 1794. A further extension to join up with the Birmingham and Fazeley canal via Bloxwich, Pelsall and Brownhills was opened in 1797. It provided a vital link with other parts of Staffordshire, Lichfield and eventually Burton and Derby.

The canal is one of the highest in England and was created without locks, going round rather than across areas of raised ground. The result was many hump-backed bridges across it and a winding course prompting the nickname the “Curley Wyrley” Canal.

With the passing of time some of the bridges have been demolished and rebuilt, Church bridge was reconstructed in 1922, Barn bridge which took you from the Rickyard to the old park was demolished in the 1970’s, a new bridge made of steel was built near the same place, the official opening of the new bridge took place on Monday 7th June 2010 at 11.00am, the bridge was opened by the Lord Mayor of Wolverhampton and given the name,” Trapmakers bridge”. New Cross Bridge is still there but a new one was built by the side of it in 1996, that bridge is called New

It is safe to assume that the steel bridge was not built until work had started on the Bentley canal as a bridge would not of been needed there, it would of just been a tow path, from the steel bridge to the Tube works there were six sets of locks. Backhouse Lane - this was the lane that ran from Sidebothams down to the canal side - the fourth was at the bottom of Well Lane by the Wolverhampton Metal Company and the fifth was the other side of Neachells Lane bridge and the final one was just before Merrill’s Hall Lane.

W & E at the junction of the Bentley canal 1976 Hill’s bridge built circa 1850 was in use up to 1961, the bridge was restored to commemorate the official opening of Corus group’s Steelpark on the 29th October 1999 by the RT. Hon. John Prescott MP the then deputy Prime Minister and secretary of state for the department of the environment, transport and the regions. The bridge is a link to the regions industrial past and the tradition of steelmaking and steel processing which commenced here in the early part of the 20th century. Anyone is welcome to go and view the bridge in the Steelpark, if you do go to view it then please report to reception to sign in, it is well worth a visit.

The third canal was called the Neachell Branch of the Bentley Canal, this ran from opposite the Tube works and then under the railway lines, from there it went past the sewage filter beds and down to Watery Lane to the Neachell Hall Colliery. Do you remember this canal?

Your Local Police In my last Newsletter I informed you of proposals to reduce the number of PCSOs employed by the force following a review of neighbourhood policing. The force was always very clear that the scale and pace of the proposed changes were dependent on a number of factors including the Comprehensive Spending Review and the final financial settlement. Whilst there is a reduction in overall budget it is not the level of cuts the force had begun to plan for. In light of this new information the force were able to announce that it is no longer necessary to proceed with any compulsory redundancy arrangements for Police community Support Officers. This is great news for us locally as our PCSO’s can continue with the great work that they do.

A good example of this is the assistance they provide Police officers in the seizure of cars in Wednesfield that are not legal. Cars without road tax, MOT and insurance which do not have the correct statutory off road notification (SORN) in place are liable to be seized. If you have ever been involved in an accident with such a vehicle, you can understand the problems it causes. Illegal vehicles are also used by the criminal fraternity, who are a law to themselves. Seizures certainly help to disrupt their activity! Please don’t be caught out, make sure your vehicle is legal.

Summary of Crime Wednesfield North continues to be one of the lowest crime generating areas in the City, however has recorded several more offences since April 2015 compared to the same time period the previous year. Part of the increase is due to the small increase in vehicle crime.

We are still seeing a number of offences which are being committed on insecure vehicles. Valuable items left on show inside insecure vehicles provide opportunity to an ill-intentioned thief. Please remember to remove valuable items from your vehicle and fully secure it.

On a positive note, burglary dwelling offences continue to show large reductions in both Wednesfield North and South of 20% and 36% respectively.

Total recorded crime in Wednesfield South is currently on par with the previous year. The numbers are much larger than in Wednesfield North due to the commercial sites at Bentley Bridge and Strawberry Lane industrial estate.

Other Team News December was particular busy at Bentley Bridge retail park which as you know the team inherited earlier in the year. Footfall increased tremendously whilst folk were scrambling to secure last minute purchases. The ‘sales’ provided their own logistical challenge, but the team were out and about and visible as much as possible in order to provide reassurance to shoppers and deter would be criminals.

During December we took the opportunity to provide visibility in the High street. The team conducted a drink drive campaign and suitably advised those using the highway as a vehicular thoroughfare. In my time as Neighbourhood sergeant I have repeatedly received complaints about motorists using

the High Street as a cut through. Please remember, only permitted vehicles are able to drive through the High Street. If you are stopped by an officer, it may result in a fixed penalty.
