PUMPKIN CARVING

Tips and tricks

Whether you're a pro or a first-time carver, there's something special about bringing a pumpkin to life. We've gathered the best pumpkin carving tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your pumpkins this Halloween.

CHOOSE THE PERFECT PUMPKIN

When picking your pumpkin, look for one that's firm and has a flat bottom to ensure stability while carving. Also, thump it to hear a hollow sound, which indicates it's ready for carving. Lighter pumpkins are also typically easier for carving as the walls are thinner.

SKETCH YOUR DESIGN

Draw your design on a piece of paper first, then tape it to the pumpkin. Use a pin or toothpick to poke small holes along the lines of your design, creating a guide to carve. This method helps avoid mistakes and makes the design process smoother.

SCOOP WITH EASE

CUT THE BOTTOM, NOT THE TOP

Instead of cutting a hole in the top of the pumpkin, try carving out the bottom. This allows the pumpkin to sit flat and keeps the top intact for a neater appearance. It also makes placing a candle or light easier.

LIGHT IT RIGHT

Instead of using a candle, which can dry out your pumpkin and be a fire hazard, use LED tea lights or glow sticks. For a more creative touch, consider placing a string of fairy lights inside the pumpkin for a soft, magical glow.

Use an ice cream scoop or a metal spoon to scrape the inside walls until they are about 1 inch thick. The thinner the walls, the easier it will be to carve, and your design will show up better when lit. Remember to save the pumpkin seeds for later (they make for a delicious roasted snack!)

CREATE A CHIMNEY

If you do use a candle, make sure to poke a small hole (chimney) near the top of the pumpkin to allow heat to escape. This will help prevent the pumpkin from cooking inside and prolong its life.

PRESERVE YOUR PUMPKIN

To keep your pumpkin looking fresh for as long as possible, coat the cut edges with petroleum jelly or vegetable oil; this will help seal in moisture and prevent rotting.

TOASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS

Clean and dry pumpkin seeds, season with olive oil and salt, bake at 180°C for 15 minutes. Allow to cool & enjoy!

SPOOKY FUN IDEAS FOR TINY TOTS

PUMPKIN PLAY

Let your child decorate mini pumpkins with stickers or safe non-toxic paint. This handson activity is perfect for tiny fingers and encourages creativity without the mess of carving.

SPOOKY STORY TIME

Look for titles with fun, colourful illustrations and simple, engaging stories. Reading together from a young age not only builds a love for books but also introduces little ones to Halloween in a gentle way.

HALLOWEEN TREATS

Instead of sweets, get some Halloween themed cookie cutters and offer some of your toddler's favourite fruit and veg snacks with a spooky twist. Peppers, apples and cantaloupe melon are all a great choice and make for easy cutting too.

SENSORY BIN

For tots aged 3-4, create a Halloween sensory bin with themed items like soft fabric pumpkins and toys, stretch some cotton wool to create "webs" and shred some coloured tissue paper. Little ones will love exploring the different textures and colours.

Simple, delicious, tried and tested seasonal recipes that all the family can enjoy. So simple, you can get the kids involved in the kitchen, too!

PUMPKIN RISOTTO

Don’t throw away that pumpkin flesh, turn it into a tasty Halloween dinner.

SERVES

1 pumpkin (a small cooking one)

2 tablespoons olive oil

350g risotto rice

1 medium red onion finely chopped

½ head of celery, finely chopped

1 clove garlic, crushed

2 pints chicken stock (2 stock cubes)

45g unsalted butter

100g parmesan

Bread and soft cheese to serve (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 180C. Remove the pumpkin’s flesh from the centre, and cut it into small, rough chunks (no need for precision here!)

2. Season with salt, pepper and olive oil.

3. Place pumpkin on a baking tray and bake for 30 mins on the middle shelf.

4. Make up your chicken stock with boiling water in a jug.

5. Heat the olive oil in a pan. Add the onion, celery, and chopped garlic and cook on low heat for about 10 minutes or until soft.

6. Add the risotto, then add the stock slowly, stirring until it has all been absorbed. Stir until the rice is cooked but not too soft.

7. Mash the cooked pumpkin slightly with a spoon or fork and stir into the rice. It should dissolve into the rice.

8. Add the butter and parmesan. Serve with some funshaped toasted bread pieces on the side and some cutout soft cheese if you like!

CHOCO APPLE SLICES

4 gala apples

150g chocolate (bar or chips)

1 tbsp coconut oil (optional, makes it easier to dip)

Cocktail sticks (optional)

Topping ideas: chopped nuts, seeds, sprinkles, coconut, crushed cookies, mini chocolate chips, dried fruit, cracker crumbs, mini marshmallows, caramel sauce, etc.

1. Wash apples and pat dry thoroughly. Slice into thin-ish 1/2 inch slices and remove any seeds/stem. Insert sticks through the bottom to make the apples easier to decorate.

2. Add chopped chocolate (or chips) to a heatsafe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until completely melted.

3. Add 1 tablespoon coconut oil and stir. Let the chocolate cool - careful as it will be hot.

4. Dip each apple slice in chocolate. Use a spoon if needed. Let excess drip back into the bowl, then put on a baking tray or baking paper to prevent sticking.

5. Add dry toppings right away. Pop in the fridge for 1 hour, or freeze for 20 mins until the chocolate has hardened. For wet toppings like caramel or peanut butter, let the chocolate harden first before topping.

Enjoy! These beauties will keep in the fridge for 3 days if kept in an air tight container.

Ripe bananas

Coconut yoghurt (or greek)

Desiccated coconut

Nutella (or choc drops)

1. Peel and half your bananas.

2. Pour your yogurt and desiccated coconut on to separate plates. Carefully roll bananas in the yogurt, letting any excess drip off.

3. Roll your bananas in coconut.

4. Add a face to your boonanas with Nutella, or stick on some choc drops using your yoghurt to glue.

5. Chill for 30 mins, and serve!

Child-safe scissors & glue

White paper or card

Googly eyes (optional)

String of ribbon for hanging (optional)

Wreath (optional)

A bit of creativity (essential!)

1. Cut the egg box in half to create the bat bodies. You’ll want to use the sections with the rounded shape, as they resemble the body of a bat.

2. Paint the egg box sections black. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Glue on googly eyes. If you don’t have googly eyes, you can also draw eyes with white paint, a white marker, or cut out paper or white card and stick them on.

4. If you want to hang your bats, make a small hole in the top of each bat body and thread a piece of string or ribbon through it. Tie a knot at the top to secure it.

Optional Decorations: Feel free to add extra decorations to your bats, such as bows, glitter or even sequins! If you like, attach your bats to a wreath and hang from doorways, ceilings, or light fixtures.

HOW TO MANAGE CLOCK CHANGES & CHILDREN’S SLEEP

I love the summer, but there is also something really special about Autumn. Kids kicking the leaves, finding conkers, the changing seasons and maybe a spiced Latte. However, it also brings the autumn clock change. This year it is on Sunday 27th October when the clocks will move back an hour. However, whilst many look forward to an extra hour of sleep –unfortunately, children’s body clocks don’t always work that way!

As a sleep consultant, I support families to help make the transition as smooth as possible. For some parents, they choose not to worry too much and let their children work it out, however, if you would like to be a bit more proactive, here are my top tips for the clock change.

NEWBORNS

Fortunately for parents of newborns, who are more than likely to be exhausted – you do not need to do a thing! Newborns tend to have less of a routine, and this is ok, so just let them get on with it!

BABIES

Babies are much more sensitive to changes in timing.

Continue to use the same awake windows and routine that you have been as this is really important.

When they wake in the morning, wait an extra 10 minutes before getting them out of the cot. Increase this to 20 minutes on the second day, and then 30 on the third. You can also add 10 minutes each day to when they are having their naps/bedtime. As their wake up time naturally gets later, keep adding the time until they reach their normal wake up. You may find they naturally adjust quicker than this.

Remember not to keep them up really late; this doesn’t equal a lie-in!

TODDLERS

Toddlers and babies over 12 months tend to still need one nap. As with older children, it is a good idea to “split the difference” with both the nap and bedtime. If their nap is currently 12.30pm, let them have it at 12pm for a few days after the clock change. Then move it to 12.30pm again.

Use the same approach for bedtime.

OLDER CHILDREN

For children who are no longer napping, this is often the easiest group to support. The day before the clocks change put them to bed 30 minutes earlier. Then, on the Sunday, put them to bed at the normal time.

If you think they may be sensitive to the new time, you could change it by 15 minutes every couple of days.

For those with gro clocks (or a similar product), you could also move the sunrise 30 minutes earlier to help their body clock reset, and then use the approach above.

Other tips for the autumn clock change

• Stick to your child’s normal bedtime routine. This is the best way for their brain to know it is bedtime.

• Get outside! Sunlight is a natural way to regulate everyone’s circadian rhythm. Ideally go outside in the morning and early afternoon. This helps us to adjust to the new time and promote better sleep at night.

• Create a calm sleep environment. Make sure your baby or child’s sleep environment is calm and quiet. Use blackout curtains to create a dark sleeping environment, and use a white noise machine to drown out any ambient noise (if needed).

HOW THEATRE SKILLS TRANSLATE INTO EVERYDAY LIFE

Sophy Chapman

Trained in Musical Theatre, Sophy has been working with children within the performing arts for 12 years. She is the founder of her own performing arts school, SCTA Theatre Academy. Sophy is passionate about inspiring young performers and creating the next generation of actors, singers and dancers.

Performing arts classes are one of the most popular activity choices for children in the UK. With a huge range of dance, drama and musical theatre classes on offer, you’d be hard pressed to find an area without a club. But just why are parents so keen for their children to perform? Are they hoping their child will be the next Zendaya or Timothee Chalamet or is there more to the performing arts than meets the eye?

Look at the website of most any performing arts schools, you’re bound to find the word “confidence” written several times, possibly in bold font. It’s a key reason parents enrol their child in the performing arts. Either their child is confident and would be perfect for the stage or they lack confidence and would like to build it. But why worry about our children’s confidence? Because confidence is important in the real world. We want our children to have the ability to speak publicly, to suggest ideas in a meeting, to stand up for what they believe in.

A close second to confidence is creativity. It is often said that the modern world is stifling creativity. The impact of screen time is certainly influencing children’s imagination and creative thinking. Creativity is key in the world of theatre. Taking on the role of a character and telling their story involves being bravely creative. Even the youngest of acting students are encouraged to use their imaginations and play imaginatively. Children with great imaginations are better able to play independently and are likely to get along better with their peers. As they get older, they tend to be better problem solvers and are more likely to succeed.

Lesser talked about skills within theatre are listening and focusing. People tend to associate the performing arts with talking rather than listening, however, for a play to run smoothly it is vital that the actors remain fully focused and in tune with what is happening. A missed cue can completely change the trajectory of a show. We are living in an age of distraction and learning to focus is a skill which can truly set you apart from others. On stage, an actor has no choice but to focus fully. These skills enable young

performers to thrive both academically and socially.

Actors must be adaptable. To outsiders it may seem that performing a play is repetitive but there are plenty of things that can go wrong onstage and performers must be able to adapt.

A common example of this is a performer not turning up on show day, performing arts students learn how to adapt. From missing cast members, dropped lines or props going missing - this adaptability is an asset in everyday life. We know, life doesn’t always go to plan but being able to adapt is vital for success!

Another benefit of the performing arts is the ability to trust. Being able to trust other people is a key part of society, and theatre people know how to trust like no others. Allowing yourself to be silly in a drama class involves being vulnerable in a group of people you are with. In dance, certain lifts require huge trust between the dancers (thanks Kevin Bacon!)

Whilst on the surface, theatre classes may seem to be geared towards the loud and confident, the life skills taught in these classes are invaluable.

NUTRITION TIPS FOR COLD & FLU SEASON

As the cold and flu season approaches, it's important to ensure our families are well-equipped to fend off illnesses. One of the best ways to do this is through nutrition. Incorporating immunity-boosting foods into your family's diet can help keep everyone healthy and resilient! But, before we look at these foods, let’s understand a bit more about our immune system.

The immune system is the body’s defence against disease and infection and a healthy, balanced diet with a variety of foods from the main food groups can help to keep it working really well.

Antioxidants found in food can help your body to fight off something called “free radicals”. Free radicals can cause serious harm quickly within the body and so we need to make sure that we have antioxidants within our diet to fend off these harmful substances.

Here are some top foods that bolster the immune system and tips on how to incorporate them into family meals and snacks.

Sweet potato

• Roast sweet potatoes with olive oil and a sprinkle

Add mashed sweet potatoes to pancakes or muffins. Serve baked sweet potato fries as a healthy side dish.

Yoghurt

For weaning babies, replace salty shop-bought mayonnaise with full-fat Greek yoghurt and use it as a toast topper mixed with tuna, prawns, or chicken.

Citrus fruits

• Add orange segments to breakfast cereals or yoghurt.

• Prepare a citrus fruit salad for a refreshing snack.

• Squeeze fresh lemon juice over salads or into water for a zesty flavour boost.

Ginger

• Add fresh ginger to stir-fries and soups.

• Brew ginger tea by steeping sliced ginger in hot water.

• Grate ginger into smoothies for an extra kick.

• Make a turmeric latte by blending turmeric with warm milk and a touch of honey.

• Incorporate turmeric into homemade salad dressings and marinades.

Leafy greens

• Blend spinach or kale into smoothies for a hidden nutrient boost.

WHAT DOES YOUR SCHOOL-AGE CHILD NEED FROM YOU?

Parenting can sometimes feel like a minefield as you try to keep up with your child's changing needs. When they're babies it's simple; you give them love, take care of their physical needs and encourage them to explore the world around them. But what about when they start school and are expected to be more independent and develop both academic and life skills?

All children need the security of knowing they are loved and have the support, encouragement and guidance of those around them, especially when it comes to facing new challenges and becoming independent. Starting school is a major milestone, and it can take a while for them to adjust to the demands a new environment places on them. Talking to them about their fears and helping them put them into perspective will help take some of the fear away, for example, reassuring a child they will make friends at school because they've been able to make friends before may make them worry less about being left out.

You can help by ensuring they have familiar surroundings at home and routines to give them continuity, and careful blending with the new demands

can make the transition easier. Keeping the same basic bedtime routine should help them settle and incorporating school reading will help build a bridge to their new daytime life.

Encouraging them to use what they've learned at school at home, whether it's reading road signs, writing shopping lists or using other skills, not only gives them the opportunity to practise and

consolidate these new skills but helps with their confidence by giving them a sense of accomplishment. As they get older, your approach will change as discussions become more complex; you may find yourself talking about historical events rather than their favourite TV characters, and homebased activities more advanced as they tackle homework, but you'll still be

ensuring they're using the key thinking skills of reasoning, problem-solving and creativity. School is also the time to encourage them to socialise and, alongside that, to practise the essential social and emotional skills needed to develop and maintain relationships. A listening ear and calm advice when they've argued with their friends can teach them to mend any cracks in their friendships. A child who can manage their emotions, empathise with others, and resolve conflicts won't struggle to find friends who can give them support and encouragement when you're not around.

Building their confidence, perhaps by giving them some age-appropriate responsibilities or asking them to contribute to decisions, even if it only about what's for dinner, can give them the boost they need to ask, or answer, questions in class.

School can be a daunting place for children, whether it's adjusting to not having you around all day or managing the pressures of multiple homework assignments. They still need something vital you can give them; the support, encouragement and safe haven that gives them the confidence to succeed.

FOR HELPING KIDS DEVELOP A GROWTH MINDSET 9

We all want to encourage our children to embrace learning, tackle challenges, and grow into confident, resilient individuals. A growth mindset—believing that abilities and intelligence can improve with effort—is key to helping kids thrive. With a few simple habits, you can help your little ones develop this mindset, opening up a world of possibility for them.

1

ACT ON FEEDBACK TO IMPROVE

Learning to listen to feedback is essential for growth. Teach your child that feedback isn’t something to be feared but a tool that helps them improve. Whether it’s from teachers, parents, or even friends, show them how to use feedback to make adjustments and move forward. It’s all about progress, not perfection!

4 SEEK OUT CHALLENGES

Encourage your child to take on challenges that stretch their abilities. Whether it’s solving a tricky puzzle or trying a new sport, remind them that growth happens when we step outside our comfort zone. Challenges might be tough, but they’re also opportunities to learn and develop.

7 CELEBRATE EFFORT

Praise your child’s effort just as much as the results they achieve. Whether they’ve spent hours practising their spelling or put extra thought into a school project, acknowledging hard work reinforces that effort leads to improvement. It’s not about being the best—it’s about giving it your best!

2 USE THE POWER OF "YET"

When your child says, “I can’t do it,” encourage them to add “yet.” This small word makes a huge difference. “I can’t do it yet” shifts their mindset from giving up to recognising that learning is a journey. It’s a gentle reminder that skills take time to develop.

5

FOCUS ON PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION

Teach your children to celebrate progress rather than getting bogged down by the end result. Whether they’re improving their reading skills or learning to kick a football, it’s the little steps forward that matter most. Progress is progress, no matter how small!

8 BE PATIENT— LEARNING TAKES TIME

Patience is key to developing any skill, and that’s something both kids and parents need to remember! Encourage your child to take their time when learning something new. Remind them that it’s okay if things don’t come easily straight away—practice and patience go hand in hand.

3

SET LEARNING GOALS, NOT JUST RESULTS

Instead of focusing solely on grades or final outcomes, help your kids set goals around what they can learn. Whether it’s mastering a tricky maths concept or learning to ride a bike, breaking down big goals into manageable steps keeps them motivated and excited about their progress.

6 SEE FAILURE AS A LEARNING OPPORTUNITY

Help your kids understand that failure isn’t the end—it’s part of the process. When things go wrong, encourage them to reflect on what they can learn from the experience. “What could you do differently next time?” This approach helps children become resilient and bounce back stronger.

9

ENCOURAGE CURIOSITY

Foster your child’s natural curiosity by encouraging them to ask questions, explore new topics, and dive into new experiences. Whether they’re wondering how a plane stays in the air or why the sky is blue, curiosity leads to learning. Plus, it keeps life fun and full of discovery!

INTRODUCING KIDS TO ESSEX’S RICH HERITAGE

From our charming villages to grand stately homes, Essex offers a treasure trove of historical sites waiting to be explored. And what better way to introduce kids to heritage on their doorstep than with a fun and educational day out?

STEP BACK IN TIME AT COLCHESTER CASTLE

Let's start with one of Essex's most iconic landmarks, Colchester Castle, the largest Norman Keep in Europe. The castle itself is so well preserved, you can really imagine what life was like in the medieval era. Inside, the interactive exhibits bring the history of Colchester to life, ensuring that kids are not just learning but actively engaged in the experience. They can even build their own version of a castle wall with giant foam blocks and try role-playing amongst the mudhuts!

Entrance fees apply—check the Colchester + Ipswich Museums website for details.

FOLLOW IN THE ROMANS' FOOTSTEPS

For those interested in Roman history, take a wander from Colchester Castle into the City of Colchester to discover the many historic gems. Known as Camulodunum to the Romans, Colchester was once the capital of Roman Britain and is home to some of the country’s bestpreserved Roman walls; it’s where Boudica famously fought and won. Walk along the ancient walls, visit the remains of the Roman theatre, and stop for lunch in the town.

For families looking for free activities in Colchester, pay a visit to Colchester Natural History Museum to take a closer look at some intriguing local finds. Hollytrees Museum just inside Colchester Castle Park is also well worth a visit, with exhibits over several floors and plenty to keep little ones entertained.

MOUNTFITCHET CASTLE

Step back in time at Mountfitchet Castle, a truly unique open-air museum where you can explore a recreated medieval Motte and Bailey castle. Wander through the Norman village, soak in the atmosphere of history, and visit the authentic homes, complete with crackling fires. SNAP CHARITY: PUTTING FAMILIES FIRST FOR 30 YEARS

Partnering with parents, SNAP supports families whose children, aged 0-25, have any additional need or disability by providing compassion, guidance and hope. SNAP's charitable mission is to stand alongside families, offering steadfast support and tailored resources. Crucially no diagnosis or professional referral is needed to access their services.

Over the past 30 years, SNAP has developed a range of services in response to the needs of Essex families including a variety of sessions for children, Information Network and online Directory, specialist talks, and email and telephone Helpline which provides an essential listening ear for parents and carers. Whether a family needs specific information or just needs to chat an issue through, SNAP’s team of Family Support Advisers are ready to help.

Rebecca and her family came to SNAP in June 2020 when the family was at a crisis point. Her son, Thomas, had been diagnosed with ASD and ADHD and was not in school. The family felt completely alone and rejected by the services that were supposed to help so she called the SNAP Helpline.

SNAP set up weekly individual sessions for Thomas and after a few months of sessions, the family started seeing a change.

These weekly sessions benefitted the rest of the family too. Whilst Thomas was occupied and happy, Rebecca attended SNAP counselling and Thomas’s younger sibling enjoyed quality time with his father at home. Thomas’s sibling also attended SIBS4FUN, SNAP’s annual sibling support week, focused on making the young carers, brothers and sisters the centre of attention.

WE WILL BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL TO SNAP FOR THE COMPASSION THEY SHOW TO OUR FAMILY. THE SNAP TEAM REALLY ARE LOCAL HEROES, AND I CAN’T THANK THEM ENOUGH FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND WARMTH TOWARDS MY FAMILY. WE ARE NEVER LETTING THEM GO!
