Little green fingers

Making gardening fun & easy for kids

Dad of 2, expert at growing plants... And occasionally the chaos in his own garden.

It doesn't take much to spark a child's imagination, and for me, it all started with my granddad. As a young boy, he introduced me to the magic of growing vegetables. I remember helping him create little holes for the leeks, carefully placing them in, and then, after what felt like an eternity, finally digging them up. The excitement of harvesting our own food was something special. And, let’s be honest - I was always the one gobbling up the last of the freshly grown veg at dinner!

One of my favourite memories was rushing to the far end of the garden to pick climbing beans for the evening meal. Or happily tossing kitchen scraps onto the compost

heap, knowing that I was playing a part in something much bigger. Those small, everyday tasks fuelled my curiosity and planted the seed for my lifelong love of gardening.

Fast forward to today, and it’s my turn to share that passion with my three-year-old daughter, Isla. She’s already helping with watering the plants (and sometimes my shoes too!) and is starting to get the hang of weeding - though I’ll admit there’s a little gasp when she gets a bit too eager with thinning the seedlings! When Isla was born, we planted a crab apple tree in her honour, and now she’s watching the blossoms with wonder, fascinated by the bees that visit.

Getting them interested in gardening

There’s no secret trick to getting children into gardening - just get them involved! If you make it fun and interactive, their interest will naturally grow, just like the plants they’re helping you care for.

Kids love being part of the action, from watering the plants to picking the veggies and even chopping them (with a bit of help from you). Toddlers can easily join in with their own mini tools - digging, stirring, and having fun alongside you.

As they get older, give them their very own space to grow things. I remember when my parents let me have my own little garden patch. It wasn’t big, but it was mine to look after, and I was over the moon! I grew spinach and radishes, and despite my constant fiddling, despite all odds, they thrived. By the time I was ten, I was in charge of an entire vegetable garden!

Naturally, you’ll want to guide them in the beginning. Start with easy-to-grow plants like radishes, spinach, salad leaves, spring onions, beans (especially climbing beans), beetroot, courgettes, and potatoes. Many seed companies offer kid-friendly options, so these are a great place to start.

Simple ways to get started

In addition to their own little garden plots, why not try some creative gardening projects?

One that’s always a hit is growing potatoes in containers - children love the excitement of digging around in the soil to find the hidden tubers. Strawberries are another winner. You can plant them almost anywhere, but for a bit of fun, why not get creative and use old, discarded items as containers? Imagine strawberries growing from a pair of old boots, spilling out of a chest of drawers, or even nestled in re purposed car tyres turned into quirky raised beds. Most supermarkets sell inexpensive packets of seeds complete with simple sowing instructions. But really, if you're afraid of "not doing it right" or saying to yourself "they won't grow" you'd be surprised to find that plants are very resilient and will usually produce something. Don't be scared - just give it a go. Who knows, you might just get a little bit addicted.

It just about growing food either, although that's a huge bonus - it’s about giving kids a sense of ownership, responsibility, and a deep connection with nature. It’s a perfect way to spend quality time together, explore the outdoors, and watch little hands at work.

Finding your people

Finding your people Making real connections as a mum

Whether you’re on maternity leave and your pre-natal group is boring the life out of you, or your kids are starting school and you feel like you’ve missed the boat on making friends as a mum, I’m here to tell you: it’s not too late. In fact, making real connections can make this whole motherhood malarkey infinitely more enjoyable. More importantly, I’ll show you how to actually do it.

Zoe Duce

Connection Expert MoveThru

Connect with Zoe on Instagram @ movethru_ or visit her website: movethru.co.uk

Zoe is a connection expert helping mums rebuild their friendships, romantic relationships, and social lives after having children. She understands the loneliness and disconnect that can accompany motherhood and offers practical tools to revive meaningful relationships. Through personalised 1-on-1 sessions and her community, Rekindle Your Relationships, Zoe teaches mums to overcome common barriers and reconnect with loved ones, making motherhood a whole lot more enjoyable.

Before we get into it, who am I to be giving you advice? Fair question. I’m Zoe – mum to a three-year-old tornado of a boy, former Projects Director, and, in the last few years, Connection Expert for mums who need practical, immediate solutions to stop their relationships from drifting apart. Basically, I took everything I learned in 14 years of project management for companies like Amazon and applied it to something far more important than advertising: helping mums reconnect with their partners, friends, and, most importantly, themselves.

So, now that’s out of the way, let’s dig into the problem a bit more. Because I know it’s not for lack of trying that you’re not excited about any of the so-called friends you’ve made in the last year. Or that you’ve given up because, well, let’s be blunt—the mums at that toddler class were just not your people.

You know play dates would be so much more fun with a parent you actually enjoy spending time with. Maybe you just crave a night out now and again—with an actual, fully functioning adult who isn’t your husband, so you can talk about literally anything other than the children.

Oh, and by the way, you’re not alone in feeling this way. I’ve received hundreds of messages over the last two years from mums in your exact position. It’s to be expected. Your original friends have dispersed across the country (or beyond), everyone’s busy with work, kids, or looking after elderly parents. Your thriving, fun, full social life seemed to disappear overnight. And yeah, you know you’re partly to blame—you said no to plans one too many times because you were exhausted, your kid was sick again, and the last time you got a full night’s sleep, skinny

jeans were still in fashion. But jeez, here we are a year or two later and you never seem to be invited to anything.

What you really want is local pals. Someone you can text on a whim when the sun comes out and you realise you should be walking along with a coffee instead of hanging washing, again. Someone with good chat, because god, you’re so bored of hearing about sleep schedules, food preferences, and developmental milestones. I’m sure all the kids are fine—does anyone ever talk about anything else these days?

If you’re vigorously nodding along, here’s how we’re going to fix this. Because I want you to start connecting and enjoying friendships again this summer—and, honestly, I’m weirdly obsessed with getting you there. I know how much more you’re going to enjoy motherhood (and life) as a result. So, here’s the plan…

1. Be extra observant: Who might be your vibe? Start paying attention to the clues… How they talk to their kids – Give me a mum who can add a little playful wit to toddler talk—that’s a special kind of connection, and I know we’d get on. For you, it might be something else. How they present themselves – I know this sounds shallow, and trust me, I usually look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards. But I love spotting those little hints of who they are outside of being a mum. A pop of leopard print? I know she's a vibe.

2. See if they want to meet up Play dates are the easiest route, but if you’re feeling bold, skip straight to step 4. If not, set up a casual meet-up on an inset day, bank holiday, or another time when

childcare options are limited. Use the kids as an excuse, then, when you get a moment together…

3. Show a bit of vulnerability

Not the “I’m about to leave my partner” kind of vulnerability (too soon, let’s not scare them off), but something real—an admission of guilt, a struggle with mum-life, a little resentment about how things have changed. Something that signals: I’m more than just a mum, and I’m open to building a proper friendship. Consider it an invitation.

4. Plan some adult-only time

If the play date goes well (for you and them), it’s time to level up. The easiest way? Tie it into something you already do using the “with or without you” approach to keep it casual: "On Tuesdays, I usually grab a quick coffee after drop-off. Want to join?" or "I always walk around the park before pick-up. Fancy coming along?"

This is where you get to find out who you both are apart from being mums. Talk about hobbies, passions, your job (or what it was before kids took over). If you feel like you’ve lost touch with all that? No worries—talk about what life used to be like pre-kids. Invite her to do the same. You never know, reconnecting with your old interests might be easier with a new friend to share them with

Friendships don’t happen by accident

If you’re waiting for someone else to make the first move, you might be waiting forever. Be the one to suggest meeting up. If it feels awkward, remind yourself that most mums feel the same way—they want deeper connections too but might not know how to initiate them. Trust me, my DM’s are proof.

And of course, you don’t just have to make friends with other mums. But at this stage of life, it’s easiest if new friends are local. Let’s be honest, you already have plenty of mates who live elsewhere. It’s friends you can actually see and meet up with easily that you’re missing. If you’re looking beyond the mum crowd, find friends in places that align with your passions—a running club, a coworking space, a local litter pick. The same principles apply: show a bit of vulnerability up front, and you’ll fast-track to the good stuff within a friendship.

The key to creating deep, lasting friendships from scratch? Vulnerability and showing your true self. Because, yes, there is so much more to you than just being a mum. Even if you forgot it for a moment there, building new friendships can be an excellent way of remembering!

If you’d like to learn more about me or my work, or just want to share how you got on with the advice above, follow along on Instagram @movethru_ or check out movethru.co.uk.

Breastfeeding

How to make extended breastfeeding work for you

Breastfeeding beyond infancy—often called extended breastfeeding—can be a wonderful and practical experience for both mother and child. But as your little one grows, you may face new challenges, from judgemental comments to juggling work and nursing. The good news? With the right approach, extended breastfeeding can be smooth, enjoyable, and empowering.

Natural term weaning

There’s no universal timeline for weaning - every child is different. Some children continue breastfeeding well into their toddler years, while others naturally reduce feeds on their own. If you decide to wean, do so gradually to avoid discomfort and reduce the risk of mastitis. Slowly decrease the amount of milk removed each day to help your body adjust. If your child is under 12 months when weaning, they will need formula as a substitute. After 12 months, they can

A common challenge of extended breastfeeding is dealing with unsolicited opinions. You may hear comments like, “Isn’t your child too old for that?” or “You’re doing it for yourself now.” The reality is, there’s no upper age limit for breastfeeding—it’s a personal choice between you and your child.

To feel empowered when feeding an older baby/child:

• Arm yourself with the facts—breast milk continues to provide nutrition and immune support beyond infancy.

• Surround yourself with supportive friends, family, or like-minded online communities.

• Have a simple response ready for unwanted comments - "This works for us!" is often enough.

• Practice your response in advance to feel more confident.

Breastfeeding on-the-go

Feeding a toddler in public can feel different from nursing a newborn - older children can be more vocal and demanding!

Tips for stress-free public breastfeeding

• Wear easy-access clothing, such as layered tops or a nursing hoodie.

• Choose a familiar, comfortable spot where your child is less likely to be distracted.

• If you prefer privacy, a shawl or cardigan can help.

• Set boundaries around your little one's access to your breasts - distraction can be a helpful tool

• Remember: You have every right to feed your child whenever you want to.

Returning to work while breastfeeding

Going back to work doesn’t mean you have to stop breastfeeding. Many mums continue nursing their toddlers around their work schedule.

Tips for returning to work and breastfeeding:

• Prioritise feeds before and after work.

• Plan ahead—discuss your pumping needs with your employer before returning.

• Clearly communicate your need for regular, private pumping breaks.

• Consider flexible working options or being near your child to breastfeed.

• Know your rights—while there is no specific law on pumping breaks, employers must provide reasonable accommodations, including more frequent rest breaks and suitable facilities.

Preparation and confidence will help pumping and feeding fit into your work routine in a way that supports both you and your baby. Trust Your Journey Extended breastfeeding is about doing what feels right for you and your child.

Whether you nurse for days, weeks, months or years, the most important thing is that it works for your family. Ignore the naysayers, trust your instincts, and enjoy this special connection for as long as it suits you both.
