Audley End Miniature Railway Summer Festival
This summer, something special is arriving at Audley End Miniature Railway – their first-ever Summer Festival, and it promises to be a firm favourite with families looking for a wholesome day out. Nestled deep in the Essex countryside, this much-loved miniature railway is already known for its enchanting woodland train ride, but now they’re adding a sprinkle of extra magic for the school holidays.
Your journey begins on board a beautifully crafted miniature steam or diesel engine, winding its way through the leafy woodland. Along the route, children can spot teddy bears enjoying their own woodland festival and wave to them as they pass. Once you reach the clearing, little passengers are greeted by Cristabelle the Wishing Fairy and Twig the Elf, who will share a gentle story about the power of wishes before inviting children to make their own.
Back at the Woodland Station, the festival continues with a host of activities that are all included in your ticket. Children can get their faces painted in the Craft Lodge, take a moment of calm with forest bathing, unleash their creativity on a giant art wall, build dens in the woods, and laugh in front of the funky
mirrors. It’s an ideal blend of outdoor adventure and gentle, magical fun!
Pre-booking is essential. For visits in July, tickets are £19 for adults and children over 92cm, £9.50 for children under 92cm, and free for under 1s and carers. Autism and SEN tickets are also available – you can find these options on the booking page. In August, the price drops slightly to £18 for adults and over-92cm children, £9 for under 92cm, and £8.50 for the August Bank Holiday weekend. No hidden extras – everything listed above is included.

Frinton-on-Sea, a peaceful, classic British seaside gem
If you’re on the hunt for a classic British seaside retreat this summer that ticks all the boxes, look no further than Frinton-on-Sea.
Nestled along the Essex coast, this charming spot is a delightful haven for families seeking a bit of beachside bliss. So, what makes Frintonon-Sea a top choice for your next family outing? Let’s dive into the reasons why this quaint seaside town is simply perfect for making memories with your loved ones.
First things first, the beaches in Frinton-onSea are a true highlight. With their golden, sandy stretches, they’re perfect for building sandcastles, having a picnic, or simply soaking up the sun. What sets Frinton apart is its spaciousness—there’s plenty of room for the kids to run about freely even at peak times. The wide expanses mean you can enjoy some quality family time without feeling crowded.
One of the charming features of Frinton is its iconic beach huts. These colourful little cabins add a touch of nostalgia and provide a lovely spot to keep your beach gear handy. There’s plenty of free parking right along the coast, making it an easy, cheap and stress-free day out. Win-win! Public toilets are available, but don't forget some change as it's 20p per person to go.
Please also make sure to check the tide times before you visit. The best time to take full advantage of the space on the beach is at LOW tide, which can vary from day/week/year. We recommend using tideschart.com which gives you high and low tide times every day.
Walton-on-theNaze, sandy toes and unlimited fun
This charming Essex seaside town has all the ingredients for a nostalgic, feel-good outing – sandy shores, traditional amusements, and plenty to keep little ones entertained without the overwhelm and chaos of a bigger resort.
Library" which is great if you happen to have forgotten the bucket and spade (which happens to even the most organised amongst us!).
The standout feature is the pier, which stretches impressively far into the sea and is home to a fun little amusement zone ideal for under-12s. Think mini dodgems, trampolines, teacups and more. A £10 wristband gives your child unlimited access to the rides for the day, so you won’t be digging for loose change every five minutes.
The beach itself is soft and sandy, perfect for digging, paddling, and shell collecting. At low tide, there’s loads of space to spread out, but do check the tide times before you go – at high tide, the sea can come in surprisingly far, especially if you’re bringing a pram or lots of beach gear. There are steps and ramps down to the beach, with the flattest access closest to the pier. We love the cute "Walton Beach toy
No trip is complete without an ice cream, and luckily, there’s a brilliant little ice cream hut near the pier entrance. If you fancy something more filling, there are a few cafés, chip shops and picnic benches along the promenade and also at the pier entrance.
In classic British style, if the weather turns, the indoor arcade on the pier is a great fallback, with 2p machines, claw grabbers, air hockey and even a small soft play tucked away at the back. It’s a good way to pass an hour if the clouds roll in.
Getting there is easy, whether by car or train – Walton station is just a short walk from the beach. If you’re driving, head for Station Yard car park, which is one of the larger ones nearby. Toilets and baby changing facilities are located along the front.

Clacton Airshow –Big Skies and Brilliant
Fun by the Sea
Clacton’s much-loved Airshow returns this summer, bringing two exciting days of aviation displays and family fun to the Essex coast. Taking place on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 August, this free event is a highlight of the school holidays and a brilliant excuse for a seaside day out.
Alongside daytime displays from favourites like the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and daring aerobatic teams, this year also features a spectacular Twilight Display on Thursday evening. Expect illuminated aircraft, lasers, and pyrotechnics lighting up the coastline as dusk falls – it’s a magical end to a day by the sea.
The event runs from 11am each day, with flight displays starting around 1pm (and again at 7:30pm on Thursday). You’ll find brilliant views all along the seafront – from Martello Beach to the east of Clacton Pier and up towards Holland-on-Sea. Bring a blanket or chairs and arrive early if you want a good spot, especially with children.
There’s a classic funfair, stalls, and food
stands to enjoy throughout the day, plus baby changing and accessible viewing areas. If your child is noise-sensitive, ear defenders are a good idea – some of the displays can be quite loud.
Clacton station is just a short walk from the event site, but if you’re driving, parking is being managed by Clacton-on-Sea Rotary Club. Spaces can be pre-booked, or you can pay on the day. For details, visit rotary-ribi.org
The event is free, if you'd like to support the show, official programmes are available for £6.

6 top tips to help children sleep well on holiday
Family holidays can be magical, but they can also disrupt even the most wellestablished sleep routines. Whether you're heading off for a weekend in the UK, a short-haul trip to Europe, or a long-haul adventure, good sleep doesn’t need to be left behind. With a bit of planning and patience everyone can be rested to make the most of your adventure! Here are my top tips for making sleep easier on holiday.
1. Keep the bedtime routine
Try to keep your child’s bedtime routine consistent, even if the timing is slightly off. Bath, story, cuddles—whatever you usually do at home, do on holiday too. Bring comfort items like their favourite blanket, soft toy or white noise machine to help them adjust.
Lucy Murray Sleep Consultant
Little Dreams Consulting, Chelmsford & Colchester
Lucy is a certified Baby and Child Sleep Consultant. She supports families with their children’s sleep from 4 months to 10 years (and antenatal packages) across Essex and further afield. As a mum of 3 who all struggled to sleep, Lucy knows how important it is to get help as a parent. If you are struggling with your child’s sleep but aren’t sure where to turn, book a free, noobligation 15-minute call to find out how she can help or see her website for sleep tips.
2. Recreate their sleep environment
Set up your child’s sleep space to mimic home as much as possible: dark room, same sleepwear, same bedtime signals and a familiar book. Travel blackout blinds can be great for making a bright room darker.
Scan to book a free 15 minute call with Lucy or visit her website.
When flying short-haul, try to avoid flights that fall during nap times unless you know your little one will sleep on the plane. For long-haul trips, timing is key. If you're landing in the evening, keep your child awake for the few hours before landing so they're ready for bed in the new time zone. If arriving in the morning, let them sleep during the last stretch of the flight to help them stay awake through the day. This isn’t always possible with flight times, but if it is - it can be really useful. Find more tips for holidays on my blogs.
4. Managing jet lag
For long-haul travel, adjusting to a new time zone can take time. Daylight and food are your best friends. Once you arrive, get outside into natural daylight and serve meals in line with the new local time. Avoid lying in, even if the night was rough—consistent wake-up times will help reset your child’s body clock. In the evenings, dim the lights and start the bedtime routine early to support melatonin production.
5. Gradual shifts before travel
If you’re only away for a short time, you might not need to fully adjust to the local time zone. But if you're travelling for a longer stay, consider gradually shifting your
child's schedule by 15-30 minutes each day in the run-up to your trip to ease the transition. If you are travelling to Europe it can also be helpful to stay on UK time (especially as this can give you a later bedtime which can help with dinnertime)
6. Be flexible, but stay calm
We can plan everything to the last minute, but it doesn’t always work. For example, you plan their nap and then the plane is delayed. Try not to worry too much. Focus on keeping their routine, not introducing new sleep habits and when you are back home, go straight to your normal routine.
Most importantly, have an amazing time. Holidays with kids aren’t always picture perfect, every single second, but they can make gorgeous memories and maybe (just maybe) 5 minutes of relaxing for you!

Paultons Park
Peppa, Playtime & Thrills: A Day at Paultons Park
Words by Sarah Measom
If you’ve got a Peppa fan in the house, chances are you’ve already heard of Peppa Pig World. Team Puddle was kindly invited along to the park this summer, and we’re happy to report that it truly lives up to the excitement. Set within the award-winning Paultons Park in Hampshire, this colourful, joyful section of the park is a dream day out for young families, and adults will love it just the same!
It's the only park we've visited that is perfect for little ones under 5, they can go on (and want to go on) almost
everything! We spent hours just in the Peppathemed section of the park, and honestly, it would’ve been enough on its own.
There are nine gentle rides made especially for younger children, all packed with familiar friends and lots of colour. Favourites for us included George’s Dinosaur Adventure, Grandpa Pig’s Boat Trip, and Peppa’s Balloon Ride. It was lovely to recognise scenes from the show, the props were also amazingly high-quality, and it was so lovely just walking from one attraction to the next with full-on excitement and entertainment provided inbetween. We even got to meet baby Evie!
It’s clear when you enter the park has been designed with young families in mind. From wide walkways and buggy parks, to clean loos and well-placed picnic benches and
play equipment, everything feels thoughtful. There’s even an indoor Peppa-themed soft play area, perfect if you need a break from the rides or if the weather isn’t on your side.
What surprised us was just how much else there is to explore outside of Peppa Pig World. Paultons Park itself is big, with over 70 attractions, and it has something for everyone. We all enjoyed a go on the traditional carousel, classic teacups and the waterslide! There’s plenty for older children too in areas like Tornado Springs and Lost Kingdom, which have a more adventurous feel.
Staff were friendly, queues were well managed, we didn't wait longer than 10 miniutes for most rides. The whole place felt calm—even at the weekend. You can bring your own food, there's plenty of picnic benches, there are also food options available inside the park. The soft-serve ice-cream is delicious and also reasonably priced.
The whole place is spotlessly clean, well organised, with helpful, friendly staff, which really helped make the day feel less frantic.
If you're planning to make a weekend of it, there's no hotel on site but plenty of accommodation nearby, and booking via the Paultons Park website gets you a great little bonus—a second day in the park free, which is ideal if you want to take extra time to explore the whole park.
Whether it’s your child’s theme park visit or just a Peppa-themed treat, Paultons Park delivers everything you'd expect and
more. From Chelmsford (mid-Essex), it's about a 2.5 hour drive, from Colchester it's about 3 hours. For us, the drive was well worth it, as it was truly a day out to remember.
You can find out more, plan your visit and book tickets at paultonspark.co.uk.
Our top tips for visiting
• Get there when it opens to make the most of the day — you’ll need the time.
• Pack swimwear and towels – the splash area is great fun for hot days.
• Use the app for real-time ride wait times and directions.
• Book online to get a second day free and find local accommodation deals.
• Take LOADS of snacks, trust me - you'll need them. Also, take refillable water bottles which can be topped up on site.

Hopefield Animal Sanctuary Temporarily Closes for Urgent Repairs
Hopefield Animal Sanctuary has temporarily closed to carry out essential repair and maintenance work. With over 700 rescued animals and daily running costs of £2,000, losing visitor income is a major financial hit.
Urgent tasks include building a new Education Centre, repairing bird pens after a fox attack, fixing plumbing and electrics, and general site upkeep. The sanctuary hopes to reopen by late July and is asking for public support to help fund the work and keep animals safe.
Families across the UK are calling for an end to fines for taking children out of school during term time. Many parents say they simply can’t afford inflated travel prices during the school holidays, or that's it's often too busy for children with additional needs — and would rather pay the fine than cope with the added stress and/ or expense.
Currently, families risk being fined £80 per child, per parent, for unauthorised absences, doubling if not paid on time. But despite millions collected in fines since 2022, the policy doesn’t seem to be working. A growing number of parents are still choosing to travel during term time for various reasons.
With more than 180,000 people signing the petition, the issue is now being debated in Parliament — raising the question: is it time to rethink the approach? The government has said in response: "We are determined to break down barriers to opportunity by supporting every child to achieve and thrive at school, working with parents and protecting children’s right to education."
The debate is awaiting a date. The petition is now closed, but you can view it here: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/700047

SEN Sessions at Airhop
For families with children who have additional needs (and those who prefer a quieter environment), finding activities that feel comfortable and enjoyable can be difficult - especially during the school holidays. Busy, noisy venues can easily become overwhelming. That’s why AirHop Chelmsford and Colchester offer dedicated SEN (Special Educational Needs) sessions – giving children the chance to enjoy the fun of trampolining in a calmer, more relaxed setting.
Held once a week, these sessions take place when the park is quieter, with fewer people, no loud music, and softer lighting. The atmosphere is welcoming and supportive, with plenty of space for children to move at their own pace.
Trampolining itself offers lots of benefits, from improving balance and coordination to building confidence. AirHop’s giant airbag also provides a safe way for children to try out new movements. The sessions can also help to gently encourage social interaction with other families attending.
Both venues are accessible, with disabled toilets and lifts. Parents and carers are welcome to contact the venue ahead of time if any further adjustments would help make the visit easier.
Families and carers can access all areas of the park during the session (subject to the usual height and weight limits), with friendly staff on hand to offer encouragement if needed. There’s no structured teaching – it’s simply an opportunity to explore the space in a way that suits each individual child.
SEN sessions run Every Monday, 6-7pm, suitable for ages 4 and up. £12 per person (one carer goes free; AirHop grip socks required, £2.90, reusable) Extra info: Please arrive 20 minutes before the session. During the SEN sessions, the slides will open at intervals, but the soft play and climbing areas will remain closed.
These sessions are a lovely opportunity for families to enjoy time together in a supportive space. For further details or to book, visit airhop.co.uk/essex
SNAP’s Summer Survival tips for families
With the summer holidays on the horizon, many families with children who have additional needs can feel overwhelmed by the long stretch ahead. SNAP, the Essexbased charity supporting families with children and young people with disabilities, offers practical advice to help make the season less stressful and more enjoyable, whether you're staying local or heading away.
Planning accessible travel
If you're heading off on a trip—whether a UK staycation or going abroad—it's important to check that accommodation, venues, and transport will meet your child's needs. Not all destinations offer the same levels of accessibility, so always confirm essential details before booking.
Pack medication in your hand luggage where possible in case of delays or lost baggage, and include a GP letter outlining what’s been prescribed. Be sure to check airline rules about carrying medication or medical equipment, and contact your travel provider in advance to arrange assistance if needed.
SNAP Charity partners with parents to provide compassion, guidance and hope for the whole family. Working across Essex, Thurrock and Southend, SNAP supports families who have a child or young person, aged 0-25, with any additional need or disability. There is a variety of services and resources and no formal diagnosis or professional referral is necessary to access SNAP services.

SNAP Charity relies on donations to provide this incredible support. To make a donation, please scan the QR code or visit their website: snapcharity.org
Travel insurance is another crucial area— many standard policies won’t cover preexisting medical conditions or specialist mobility equipment, so it’s worth taking time to compare providers offering tailored plans. In some cases, your household insurance might cover certain items.
If you’re flying, contact the airline well before departure. Discuss seating preferences, boarding needs, and availability of Special Assistance. All European airports are legally required to offer support for passengers with reduced mobility, but it’s always wise to double-check what this looks like in practice—especially at smaller or overseas airports.
Supporting neurodivergent children
For families with neurodivergent children, like those with autism, travel and change in routine can feel overwhelming. Helping your child understand what’s happening in advance can make a big difference. Talk through the trip— where you're going, how you’ll get there, what you'll be doing, and when you’ll return home.
Many children benefit from visual cues. You could use a visual timetable, create a photo book of your destination, or help them build a mini travel booklet to bring along. Adding consistent moments to each day, like the same breakfast or a daily walk, can offer grounding during unfamiliar routines.
For long car journeys, schedule in sensory or movement breaks, and bring comfort items or fidget toys to ease the time on the road. If flying, consider watching videos of airports and planes in advance or even visiting your departure airport to familiarise your child with the environment. Ear defenders or earplugs
may help with loud noises like takeoff and landing. Some airlines allow you to board early or use quiet waiting areas—just ask in advance. You can also request dietary accommodations and explain any sensory needs to cabin crew to help make the flight smoother.
Equipment to support you
Specialist seating like the MERU TravelChair fits into a standard airline seat and offers full postural support for children aged 3–11. Check with your airline before travelling to see if they can provide one, or whether you’ll need to bring your own. The Firefly GoTo Seat is another excellent portable option—it attaches to most standard chairs and can even be used on swings and trolleys, making everyday outings easier.
Making days out more accessible
If you’re heading to a theme park this summer, attractions like Adventure Island and Merlin Entertainment parks offer ride access passes for children who can’t queue or need extra support. Applications are completed online in advance and require supporting documentation, such as a doctor’s note, DLA/PIP award, or a Blue Badge.
If your child doesn’t meet the criteria for a ride pass, you may still be able to access a free carer ticket by providing proof of eligibility—check each attraction’s website beforehand.
Summer should be a time for connection and fun—not extra stress. With thoughtful planning and the right tools in place, families with children who have additional needs can enjoy a season full of special memories. Feeling Frazzled? Discover the Calming Power of Vagus Nerve Therapy
Feeling overwhelmed, anxious or emotionally drained? Struggling with sleep, digestion or low energy levels? Feeling constantly wired or completely fatigued? Or perhaps you’re wanting to feel more grounded, present and connected to your body? Firstly, know that you’re not alone! So many of us are stuck in survival mode, and operate on adrenaline everyday. But what if I told you there’s a way to support your nervous system, and draw you out of autopilot?! Enter Vagus Nerve Therapy!
What is the Vagus Nerve?
The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in your body, running from your brainstem down to your gut, stopping off at your heart, lungs, and digestive system along the way. It's a key part of your parasympathetic nervous system, aka the rest and digest system. (Or calm response). That’s the system that brings your body out of fight-or-flight mode and into a state of calm, safety, and repair. During birth, parenting or life in general, that’s exactly the place you want your nervous system to be.
Why It Matters in Pregnancy and Birth
Now if you read my previous article in Puddle Magazine, you’ll know that I’m also a birth coach too, which is where my interest in the vagus nerve first began. As when your nervous system feels safe, your body can do what it was designed to do, without Vagus Nerve Therapy

the interference of stress hormones like adrenaline. That means more oxytocin (aka the love hormone), less tension, greater feelings of safety, and a deeper sense of trust in your body. But when we’re flooded with fear, pressure, or uncertainty, the body tightens up and that can make birth feel longer, harder, or more overwhelming.
That’s where vagus nerve work comes in. By stimulating the vagus nerve through gentle techniques like touch, breath, sound, and intentional relaxation, we help the body switch from a place of “I’m under threat” to “I’m supported & safe.”
What Happens in a Vagus Nerve Therapy Session?
In our sessions, I create a calm, supportive space where we work directly with your nervous system. The treatment itself involves a combination of light touch to release & reset your fight-or-flight response, followed by sound frequency and energy healing to rejuvenate and reset the parasympathetic response system, creating equilibrium within the body. It’s subtle, but powerful.
People report feeling "Instantly calm & safe", ”The anxiety drawing up & out of my chest”,
“The stresses melting away”, “My anxious thoughts slowing down”.
And no it’s not just for birth, it’s for anyone! It’s brilliant during pregnancy and postpartum, or for anyone juggling stress, emotional load, or life in general. The beauty of VNT is everyone’s experience is completely unique, as it’ll target exactly what you’re needing in that present moment.
Curious to try it?
You can book a one-off Vagus Nerve Therapy session with me, or include it as part of your birth prep or postpartum care if you’re one of my pregnancy clients.
