REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 3 Members,Dear

As always, this is your Reiki Federation and we would love to hear from you about anything new you would like to see from us, so please get in touch with us.

As an organisation, we continue to offer our members the best experience we can and have hosted a number of interesting webinars over the last year. In addition, we have created an area in the Members’ Area of our website, where you can now access past events to view and listen to. Our Members Area also has the current month’s events listed too. We deliberately reduced the number of online events that we run in the summer months to make sure we can enjoy the great outdoors, however, as we move vicechair@reikifed.co.ukchair@reikifed.co.uk

We have all been working hard over the last few months to make sure we deliver another amazing online Reiki Awareness Week and we hope you feel it’s amazing too! More details of all the events will follow, however, the dates will be Thursday 22 September and finishing on Friday 30 September, so do save these dates.

REIKI AWARENESS WEEK

It’s been another incredible year for the UK Reiki Federation, as we grow stronger and stronger all the time.

CNHC registration – we continue to provide excellent educational support for those members wishing to gain CNHC registration or for those members wishing to have their Reiki courses accredited. We have a number of CPD courses advertised on our website, all of which count towards your annual 12 hours of CPD.

We have had a fantastic response to our adverts about new volunteer members and are now nearly back up to full strength, with the exception of an Events Coordinator. If you would like more information about this role or to volunteer for this role, please do contact Anne-Marie chair@reikifed.co.uk

KEY UPDATES

“I joined the UK Reiki Federation in 2021. I am an Essex based Reiki Master Teacher. Before developing in Reiki, I trained as a Clairvoyant. I learnt Reiki to support my working life balance and whether I am receiving, giving or teaching, I am always blown away by Reiki and the results Reiki provides. Away from my Spiritual and Healing I have worked since 1994 as a Civil Servant dealing with Legality, Courts, Human Rights, Complainants and more within Civil and Criminal Matters.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE

I did my Reiki 1 course nine years ago and since then my attentiveness to Reiki has fluctuated. The periods when it’s been at its most intense were immediately after my Reiki Master course, and when I volunteered to give Reiki at a hospice, and also when I organised Reiki shares. There have been many meaningful experiences involving Reiki along the way: of the 425 treatments I have given to date (according to the log that I keep) the Reiki treatments that I am most pleased to have given were to each of my parents, my mum in 2020, and my dad in 2021, as they lay unconscious in bed during their last days. Reiki eased their passage from this life. Despite these rich experiences, there have been periods where I’ve had less focus on Reiki. I wanted to share my recent experience of undergoing something of a Reiki renaissance. It was triggered by the first episode of the Reiki Revolution on Youtube (www.youtube.com/TheReikiRevolution).

Reiki by Alistair Elliott

Renaissance

The host, UKRF member and author, Torsten Lange, interviewed UKRF Chair, Anne-Marie Carratu. Anne-Marie talked about the positive impact of Reiki on her disabled son, and then in the Reiki share during that episode Torsten encouraged us to intend that Reiki go where it would help us most at the moment, and I suddenly realised that I needed to use Reiki to help with the Crohn’s Disease (inflammation of the colon) that I have had for 20 years. I’d used Reiki before with the Crohn’s but had then ‘forgotten’ about it so I’d reluctantly been taking medication for the condition which kept it under control. However, I wasn’t keen on medication as doctors regard Crohn’s as a chronic condition and I would prefer not to be dependent on medication for the long term. As I sat watching the Reiki Revolution programme, I knew for certain that all I needed to do was to focus my Reiki selftreatments on my colon. I immediately stopped my medication (not something we can recommend to clients without suggesting that they take medical advice first) and started giving myself selftreatments a couple of times a day, visualising a vibrant, pink, healthy colon.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2022 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF10

Despite not taking any medication since that webinar, my condition initially stayed the same as when on medication, with no deterioration. I was delighted. Within weeks my condition actually improved, based on Reiki treatments alone. Knowing the power of Reiki I shouldn’t have been surprised, but I have a child-like, awed excitement all over again as if I was learning about Reiki for the first time. Every time I see the power of Reiki in action, it’s Priorhumbling.toCovid, the Reiki World magazines from UKRF and the Reiki Association gave me a nudge to remember the gift of Reiki, giving my commitment to Reiki a boost. One of the good things which has come out of the pandemic years has been that we no longer have to wait three months, due to the explosion of regular online Reiki inspiration. Every week now there are multiple events from UKRF and other organisations which can help us deepen our connection to Reiki: webinars, Reiki shares, Reiki courses. I sometimes get diary clashes of online Reiki events! It is now possible to reach the UKRF’s minimum annual CPD quota of 12 hours within a few weeks, just by sitting at our laptops at home. This immersion in Reiki inspired me recently to do something that I had been considering for a long time, but I had held back for some reason that I cannot explain. I put a note on the local community Facebook group in the area where I was going to be on holiday for a week: ‘I’m a Reiki practitioner and have a week off my day job this week and would be happy to give a free Reiki session to anyone. I am a member of the UK Reiki Federation and registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council with professional indemnity insurance. (Reiki is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, a term used to describe a natural system to help bring about an improved sense of wellbeing and a positive feeling of spiritual renewal.) Message me if interested’. The description of Reiki is the one which is on the CNHC website. The Facebook group has 3,600 members and I had no idea how many would respond. A total of twelve people got in touch. This resulted in seven appointments to have a Reiki session, of which three people cancelled in advance, one was a no show (note to self: remember the first principle –just for today: do not anger!), and three lovely people came for treatments, two of whom were totally new to Reiki.

Stopping taking some pills and giving a few Reiki treatments may not sound like much of a breakthrough but for me emotionally it feels like I’ve passed a couple more milestones on my Reiki journey. My next challenge is to use to Reiki to help me control my heart condition without medication (as mentioned above, this is not something we can recommend to clients without seeking medical advice in advance).

Alistair Elliott UKRF Member “Every time I see the power of Reiki in action, it’s humbling.”

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF12

The

Kokedama (‘moss ball’) is a Japanese form of cultivating plants, similar to bonsai. As the name suggests, small plants such as ferns are planted within a ball of soil, and covered in moss so that that fronds shoot out from the top. Kokedama are decorative ways to appreciate and enjoy plants indoors, and are sometimes placed within coconuts for extra support, and either hung from above or placed in dishes. The simple elegance of kokedama makes them so captivating, and the combination of plants and moss in the home can create an interesting topic of conversation. As most ferns prefer shade, kokedama are usually placed in areas of the home that do not receive direct sunlight. A favourite plant for using in kokedama is the delta maidenhair fern (adiantum raddianum) as the beautiful, delicate fronds are prized for their thin black stems and soft green leaves. Other suitable plants are young dracaena, spider plants, succulents, parlour palms, pothos, or anthurium (among many others).

Kokedama are loved because they transform plants into a decorative piece for your home, and help strengthen our appreciation of nature. It is a form of natural art related to bonsai, terrariums and moss baskets, which are also wonderful ways of incorporating plants into your life. Art of Kokedama

REIKI WORLD

The Reiki I practice, is the original Usui Reiki from Ryoho, which many others practice around the world. As a channel for the Universal Life Healing Energy, aside from the physical benefits I also see how the Knowledge,Esotericincluded in the training, helps me to develop a deeper understanding of my chosen life experiences, my karma, and to work to transform these into more positive outcomes. So coming out of lockdown, and phasing back into the workplace full time, I recognised that as an organisation, we were still very much feeling the big shifts in energy, as psychological after-effects of Covid, both in our professional and personal lives. And in these unique and unprecedented times, it was especially important that we gave, much needed attention and focus, to our wellbeing and self-care.

In Reiki We Trust and Healings for Well Being Day at the Birmingham Children’s Trust by Sahera Parveen

“That was so brilliant and relaxing, to just be still and listen to your body.”

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2022

For this reason, I spent a day this June, based in one of our offices, sharing about Reiki and the Essenian and Pleiadian Healings, and offering free 5 minute Reiki treatments to anyone that wanted to experience this. I had back to back appointments all day with a stream of staff from different teams including Early The Birmingham Children’s Trust is part of the largest Local Authorities in Europe and works with more than 10,000 children and young people in our city every day. I am an Essenian Master, Teaching Reiki Master and I lead a Pleiadian Healing circle in Birmingham. I am also a Qualified Social Worker and Well-being Champion at the Birmingham Trust. I have been a Social Worker for almost 10 years and experienced many challenges of front line working. Not the least of which is vicarious trauma, or ‘compassion fatigue’ consisting of physical and emotional burnout. I have worked in the Empower U hub for over 2 years. As a key part of the Contextual safeguarding team, we address extra familial harm, with a focus on children and young people that go missing and are at risk of being criminally and or sexually exploited. I am part of a diverse and vibrant community of social work, youth and criminal justice professionals, who operate with a strong team ethos. In the healing work I do, I know we are currently going through a big transformation in the energy on earth, moving from the 3rd to 5th Dimensional energy. This is leading to the many changes in society, the environment and day to day in our personal lives that I witness every day as a social worker.

Reiki

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF14

And whilst receiving regular 5th Dimensional Essenian and Pleiadian healings, has absolutely helped me to manage the deeper stresses of my professional and personal life, practising Reiki has continued to be the foundation for my everyday self-care; supporting me to manage physical pain, stress, anxiety and tension.

Another Early Help colleague said “This is such a gift, to be offered this, it’s better than a box of chocolates if you ask me.”

A senior manager requested for me to come and speak to her team before their group supervision as they were going to begin discussions around some recent child deaths as case studies, and she felt they needed something grounding and supportive of their emotional and mental wellbeing.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive with one team manager saying “That was so brilliant and relaxing, to just be still and listen to your body.”

A colleague from the police team had a powerful experience “Wow I was so sceptical, I thought it would be rubbish, but it was amazing. I had this pain in my shoulder and my head felt so heavy, almost like I couldn’t hold it up. And now I just feel so light and relaxed. I definitely would love more.” Another said “It’s like hitting the reset button.”

My colleague at Empower U said “I was starting to feel anxious sitting at my computer just now, thinking about how much work I have to do, but now I just feel calm, happy and ready to get back to work!”

Years, Children in Care and the police, coming in during their breaks and lunchtime and in between meetings and visits.

It was reiterated by everyone that received some Reiki, that it was important to have the opportunity to stop and relax and receive healing. They cited the need to cope with the pressures of the work, to manage work related stress, and stop the progression of any stress leading to illness.

It was such a positive day, that I have since been added to the Trust’s wellbeing offer to staff and we are in the process of developing a resource for staff to receive Reiki on an ongoing basis, the same way they would receive counselling as part of an employee assistance programme.

As the 5th dimensional energy continues to increase on earth and we move into a new paradigm of insight, purity unconditional love and oneness, the need for 5th dimensional healings and Reiki will increase. I feel very grateful to the Godly energies for having the opportunity to be able to offer these to people at this time.

Following my first Reiki sessions in consecutive months, I could feel my life outlook was changing. I had released tension. I felt more upbeat. I began realising past experiences I had spent decades thinking about were no longer an emotional trigger. I felt lighter in spirit & began seeing other perspectives I had previously been closed off to. This prompted me to delve deeper into Reiki & encouraged me to enter a path of discovery. I continue to be inspired by the experiences Reiki offers my clients, family, & friends. To hear the direct & often profound impact Reiki has had on their physical & emotional wellbeing, the changes they’ve noticed in how they approach life & awakening to their life purpose. It truly blows my mind! Their feedback deepens my education about Reiki & its ability of working in unexpected ways.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2022

The feeling in Qiki Gong, as in Reiki, is always that the soft gentle power, energy, QiKi comes through you, from the core of universal energy – the seat of your physical, emotional, spiritual power. It flows inwards and outwards, to where it is required. You may use it with intention yet you do not control it - it just is.

Phi sounds, and is, mathematical, however, we will be ignoring the maths here (we hear you give a sigh of relief). Phi is simply a part of nature where nothing is in straight lines and you find amazing spirals everywhere. From the sub-atomic, within the structure of DNA, sea shells, plants, to tornados, waves, galaxies. The closer you look, the more you see. These images below are just two of the many examples we have found in Nature.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF20

Hello from the Qiki Pair. In this article we are focusing on one of the key Reiki symbols. The first one we learn and the one that, in our minds, is the plug in the socket of Reiki energies. The power Hassymbol.setting the intention and drawing the power symbol become part of your subconscious way, where you perform it almost instinctively, with your focus more on the intention of the treatment? Whilst this is wonderful, as we know that intention is what it is all about, we felt it would be very beneficial to take some time to re-feel the symbol and the purity of the intent on power and protection bringing it back to your conscious way. When drawing the power symbol Alan kept feeling there was “something familiar”, then he remembered 20 years ago when he started to learn QiGong he had read an article about Phi spirals (which are derived from The Golden Ratio) and how they appear in QiGong.

The Power Symbol - When setting your intention with the power symbol take your time – there is no rush. Focus on visualising these glorious spirals, penetrating deeply into every fibre and rippling out from the tiny to the Universal. The power, the protection. We are sure there are many times when you are able to focus on the beauty of this symbol.

Re-feeling the intention of the Power Symbol - CKR by Ruthie Moriarty and Alan Sanson

Ruthie Moriarty – the Hypnotic Spiraler Alan Sanson – the Inner Spiraler

Spiralling Galaxies

Spiral your wrists and hands around each other. Let this spiralling play through your whole body, move with the spiralling flow. As you play this Feelmove© it is wonderful to visualise the more angular parts of the power symbol and physically weave the spirals around with your hands and wrists - keeping it small yet fluid. In your mind the Feelmove© can represent anything from the tiny to the vast. Go slowly – watch the movement, feel the feeling.

Power Spirals

Small yet powerful and protective. Feel the flow through you to your arm, wrist, hand and fingers – soft and gentle. Rotating as much as you feel comfortable. Outwards, inwards, letting the spirals play. Totally focus, feel the flow, watch your body move, play, spiral. Be you.

Qiki Spirals – The Movie…… https://vimeo.com/711969108

Qiki Spirals

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 21 è è è REIKI AND QIGONG

The Qiki Feelmoves© in the accompanying movie focus on ways to play with the Phi spirals. As always we do not show the actual Reiki symbol for reasons we are sure you understand. However, we hope that when you watch the movie, you will feel our intention as we are visualising the CKR. When you play along, feel the tremendous energy and power. Imagine the spirals coming from Mother Earth or the universe through you and out – creating an infinite number of spinning spirals to re-energise you, your client, whoever and whatever you are helping. The Feelmove© starts with your Inner-Be feeling, growing so that your whole mind and body is moving.

Move one hand to your root chakra level in front of you. Then rotate from Earth star up through your Be-ing allowing the spiral to flow out through the movement of your arm and hand as you expand away from your body. Start with slow Yin moves, then feel the power as you speed up (no rushing though) and whoosh. Feel the spiralling energies flow out, just as they do when you draw/visualise the symbol. When your hand is at the end of the spiral, your arm relaxes down, which in turn is drawing a Phi spiral inwards to the centre of the spiral and back to your Root.

With a deep bow to the golden spirals. In love and light.

The flower photos in this article are the copyright of QiKi Gong. The Phi spiral is widely available on the https://www.qikigong.co.ukinternet.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF24

Ema started by helping an anxious cat she fostered from her local cat shelter. Tiggs had been neglected and she suspected more than this. He suffered from very poor digestion and would flinch, cower and panic in a range of situations. He quickly turned a corner upon receiving regular Reiki though, and within weeks the shelter staff were astounded by his progress, from hyper-vigilant and always active to a chilled-out lounge cat! Ema’s request to offer Reiki to cats in this centre, having previously been refused, was soon accepted.

As the Animal Reiki Coordinator for the UK Reiki Federation, I was delighted to host a panel discussion on July 19th titled Offering Reiki to animals in Rescue centres and Sanctuaries with three of our Animal Reiki Practitioner members – Ali Schmutz, Ema Melanaphy and Jude McDermott. We have all helped many rescue animals in desperate need of love, care and being understood and we came together for a 1-hour event to discuss our experiences and views on a number of popular questions. We opened by discussing the different ways we commenced our journeys in rescue centres with some helpful suggestions for anyone interested in doing so. Ali approached the rescue centre she wished to support online. As there were no vacancies with animals at that time she opted to initially volunteer in the tearoom where staff could get to know her and she could prove that she was reliable and prepared to help in any way. Before long this paid off and she was able to start offering Reiki with such success that two staff members decided to learn Reiki themselves.

Jude wrote several letters, refining them each time. She realised that what really gained attention was not information about herself so much; beyond her professional qualifications; but how she and Reiki could help the animals and benefit the rescue centre, with a primary focus on relaxation.

Offering Reiki to Animals in Rescue Centres, Sanctuaries & Foster Care

All members of the panel felt especially passionate about the next major discussion topic: important skills, expertise and additional considerations to ensure that we optimally help any distressed animals right from the start.

When animals become more relaxed they are less reactive and settle more quickly. This enables them to be rehomed sooner allowing the rescue to take in greater numbers of desperate animals. Jude now offers Reiki to dogs at a centre with great results being achieved. My experience differed again.

First of all, we must comprehend that Rescue animals have often been through a lot mentally, emotionally, and perhaps physically too. I referred to a gorgeous and totally innocent dog who had been cruelly thrown off a bridge and left for dead, another was tied to a rescue centre with a label around his neck asking for him to be looked after. Sometimes individuals move into rented accommodation or care and cannot take their animals. These are just three of many examples of sick, abandoned and cruelly treated animals who arrive in a strange environment, knowing no-one and probably fearing what might happen next.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 25 REIKI WORLD

As rescue centres can sometimes be full to capacity, or certain animals may not be suited to a centre environment, some animals may instead go to approved foster carers. So, as well as providing more suggestions for offering Reiki in rescue centres, our later discussion included ideas to enable more animals in foster care to be offered Reiki, prior to their forever home being found.

Totally unexpectedly, when promoting Animal Reiki at a ‘Careers with Animals Day’ the cat care manager from a cat rescue an hour away asked if I could go to offer Reiki to their anxious cats. After just one visit, benefits were clear to see and weekly visits followed. At a donkey sanctuary, the donkeys this time took the lead. As a general visitor, I found my hands becoming warm and tingling, and observed donkeys heads dropping as they relaxed. Explaining this to the owner afterwards provided the only opening I needed.

Little background may be known about some rescue animals and our views unilaterally agreed on the need to understand animals – their body language, behaviour cues and how to handle them if need be. Also, the essential requirement to come across as calm, confident, respectful of their situation, physical health and both mental and emotional state; knowing how to approach and offer Reiki so as to earn and develop their trust. This typically means offering Reiki from a distance away, initially where the animal feels safe and in control, allowing them to take the lead. Further actions were discussed during the event and more information on this topic can be obtained from the publication Understanding Animals: A working guide for Reiki Practitioners and a 1-day CPD workshop on the same topic (details on www.reikifed.co.uk).

Jude is sharing Reiki with a Rescue dog from the streets of Romania. He is fine with other dogs but is very anxious and fearful around humans. This all shows in his body language. He connected with the Reiki Jude shared into the enclosure quite quickly and was soon lying near to her. In the third session she sat in a chair in the outer section of his kennel intending him to feel peace within both the outer area and inner ‘bedroom’. He normally went to hide in his “bedroom” if anyone entered and the rescue staff expected him go there but he chose to stay with Jude, eventually lying down, visibly relaxed. As an extra bonus, all of the barking from the other dogs soon became quiet as the building filled with Reiki. The feedback from the staff has been inspiring. They say they are noticing a change in him. He is becoming more relaxed since having Reiki sessions. This case has been and still is unbelievably rewarding. Each time Jude thanks the little fellow so very much for sharing Reiki with her and even after 20 years of working with dogs, adding to her knowledge. Reiki to Animals...

(continued)

This article wouldn’t be complete without an example case study from us all to show the type of animals we need to be suitably trained to help. We can’t express how rewarding it is to work with rescue animals and see their transformation purely from our love and energy.

This dog loved Reiki from first second it was offered and ever since, absorbing it like a sponge and choosing to be close up to Ali, sleeping in no time. Muscles appeared to go into spasm and he let out long whines. This continued for a few weeks in which time, his hair grew back and coat shone. He came to accept the harness and collar, and stopped eating his lead. Reiki enabled this dog to be rehomed more quickly to long-term foster care where Reiki, physio and vet care continued. He now walks quietly on his lead and even has his own gazebo to relax under in his garden.

SUMMER 2022 were evident and colitis was suspected. He required corrective surgery on both hind knee caps. He had also licked his thunder jacket to such an extent that the glue on the velcro burned all the skin on his neck and shoulders, leaving him extremely sore.

Ema offered weekly Reiki to this cat in the far corner of the cattery, avoiding eye contact, sitting cross-legged in the far corner of the pen by the door. The cat hissed initially and stayed in her basket, petrified. After the first session she was curled up fast asleep –unheard of for this extremely reactive kitty! During her third Reiki session, Ema sensed her turning a corner, felt a beautiful sense of her Heart chakra energy opening and intuitively knew she was going to be OK. Within days the cattery manager spontaneously picked her up, their eyes met and she received a lovely purry cuddle. Ema fostered her to continue her socialising until she was lovingly rehomed, happy to have been a part of this rescue animal’s journey to her foreverAnfamily.elderly

These animals need us to understand them and be confidently competent. donkey held a special place in my heart. In two years of receiving Reiki she kept a distance away but notably relaxed, enjoying therapy mornings at the sanctuary that dearly cared for her. Donkeys are often paired with others for whom they form a very close bond, as was the case with this donkey. One day her soulmate was moved into another field to help socialise a new donkey with a sad past. Upon arriving that morning, I was simply advised of the older donkey’s health issue – she hadn’t been to the toilet for almost 24 hours and if this situation persisted a vet would need to be called. When in a deep state of Reiki connection, the poorly donkey shared her feeling of a broken heart. Instantly I realised that her ‘problem’ may be due to emotional distress of believing that she had lost her best friend to another donkey. This was explained to the rescue owner and in no-time, her best buddy returned and her toileting habits returned to normal.

REIKI WORLD Ema was asked to help an incredibly cute and tiny cat (barely more than a kitten) who behaved as though she was completely feral. Other volunteers were not allowed into her pen, staff had severe difficulties going in the pen to put down food & water or clean it, and even a behaviourist’s efforts had failed. Desperate to save this little girl, the cattery manager asked Ema to help as a last-ditch attempt, after previously turning down her offers of Reiki for the shelter animals.

A Guide to Gassho Meditation

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF28

‘It clears the mind, opens the heart and strengthens one’s connection to Reiki energy.’

by Giancarlo Serra Mikao Usui

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2022

As those in the Reiki tradition know, in the early 1920s, after years of dedicated practice, spiritual seeker Mikao Usui committed to a ritual of fasting and meditation on Mount Kurama in Japan. His goal was to reach an enlightened state of deep, abiding, inner peace called An-Shin Ritsu-mei (pronounced “on sheen dit sue may”) in which he would understand and be guided to achieve his life purpose. At midnight, on the 21st day of his retreat, “a powerful light suddenly entered his mind through the top of his head and he felt as if he had been struck by lightning; this caused him to fall unconscious.” When he regained consciousness, he was filled with a profound state of high-frequency, spiritual energy. He knew this as the enlightened state of deep peace and inner guidance that he had been seeking. Usui Sensei quickly discovered that not only was his consciousness elevated but that this energy also brought deep healing. In order to strengthen and develop the power of Reiki energy in their lives and their healing work, Usui Sensei instructed his pupils to practice a special meditation morning and night, as well as before healing sessions. The hand position for this meditation he called Gassho. In the West it is known as the “prayer position”.

Gassho each time at the beginning of his Reiki workshops/meetings. It is meant to be practiced for 20-30 minutes after getting up and/or in the evening before going to sleep.

Once you have a strong sensory awareness of your whole hands meeting, focus more narrowly into the sensations of Reiki energy running between your middle fingers up to your middle fingertips. Again, you could imagine this as heat or flames, this time flowing upward between your middle fingers.

How To Practice Gassho Meditation

Gassho can be done alone or in a group. Group meditations are a wonderful experience since the energy increases far beyond the sum of the individual participants’ energies.

Gassho Meditation Gassho meditation is a crucial part of any Reiki practice. The word Gassho literally means “two hands coming together”. It clears the mind, opens the heart and strengthens one’s connection to Reiki Mikaoenergy.Usuipracticed

• Close your eyes and place hands together with palms touching in front of the middle of your chest, with your thumbs touching your heart chakra.

• Focus your attention at the point where your 2 middle fingers meet or in the space between your palms.

Once you have a strong sensory awareness between your middle fingers, relate this to the Central Channel running right up through the core of your body. Imagine and feel heat or flames flowing upward through the centre of your body, from your perineum to the crown point of your head. See if it’s possible to feel both the Reiki energy running up between your middle fingers and up through the Central Channel at once (or you can switch back and forth between them) to strengthen the sensation.

• Sit down (or it can also be done standing), with your spine straight, but still comfortable, and your head in a neutral, upright position.

Dr. Usui taught his Reiki system, which is based on three pillars: Gassho, Reiji-Ho, and Chiryo.

• Lightly close your eyes and feel the sensations of Reiki energy between your palms and fingers. You could imagine the sensation as heat or flames flowing upward between your hands. Focus your attention like this until you really feel the sensation.

• If your mind wanders, acknowledge the thought, then let it go and just refocus by returning your attention to the point where your middle fingers meet or the space between your palms.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 29 REIKI WORLD

• It is a simple way to relax, reset and regain a spiritual perspective.

30

There are many transforming secrets hidden within the Gassho posture that can have a powerfully positive effect on your spiritual practice of Reiki:

• Try your best to dis-identify yourself from your thoughts and feelings during meditation, as well as from your senses, but don’t close yourself off to them.

• Gassho develops sensitivity in your hands and your body as a whole.

• It helps to grow your sense of inner peace, spiritual connection and life purpose.

• Make sure to keep your hands relaxed, meaning that you’re not holding any tension in them or straining to press them together. 2. It’s ok to notice sensations, however don’t get caught up in them.

• Focus your entire attention at the point where the two middle fingers meet. Try to forget everything else. If you begin to think about something else during this meditation, observe the thought and then let it go.

• Then, notice how you feel.

Tips

Benefits of Gassho Meditation

• Gassho is a simple way to calm and soothe your nervous system, quiet and focus your mind and centre yourself in the flow of Reiki energy through the core of your being.

• You can then imagine and feel that the Reiki energy expands to surround and infuse your whole body. See if it’s possible to stay focused on the sensation and really soak it in, until you are really absorbed in it.

• If you find it painful to hold your hands folded together in front of your chest for twenty minutes, let your hands (keeping them together) slowly sink down to your lap into a comfortable position and continue to meditate.

• It is a meditative technique that provides a simple focal point by focusing on one thing, recognising when your mind drifts away and gently returning to that focal point.

Kintsugi - Finding beauty in imperfection

How to use Japanese concepts to improve your life

Photo credit and huge thanks to Marco Montalti, a Kintsugi artist based in Cervia, Italy. You can see wonderful examples of Kintsugi pottery pieces in Marco’s Etsy shop: Realkintsugi - www.realkintsugi.com Marco Montalti, www.realkintsugi.com

Marco Montalti, www.realkintsugi.com

In ancient legend kintsugi came about originally as a way to repair prized ceramic pieces of art. By repairing shattered pottery with golden lacquer, it was discovered that the resulting objects became even more beautiful and treasured than before. Every flaw is unique and instead of repairing an item to be like new, the 400-year-old technique actually highlights the “scars” as a part of the design. Using this as a metaphor for healing ourselves teaches us an important lesson: Sometimes in the process of repairing things that have broken, we actually create something more unique, beautiful and resilient This same concept can be developed further, not just with objects. It’s an important and empowering idea to think about, especially when life seems challenging. Reiki teachings help us to stay calm, (just for today, do not anger) and Reiki students and Practitioners live by these principles...but learning about these Japanese philosophies can help us to gain further insight into many helpful concepts which have stood the test of time. Modern life tends to strip away these ideas...if we let it...so why not embrace a new way of thinking about those ‘flaws’? We all have them after all! “Kintsugi represents the strength and effort behind every single scar and the ability to recover from a trauma into a new form that is even stronger and more precious than before. The cracks are repaired with gold, and they tell the story of the pottery, an unrepeatable story which makes every piece unique.” Marco Montalti
