ENJOY RESPECT ACHIEVE BOHUNTSIXTH.ORG

Welcome to Bohunt Sixth Form

I am delighted to welcome you to Bohunt Sixth Form as you embark on the next exciting phase in your educational journey. Opened in September 2017, our game-changing sixth form builds on our guiding principles of ‘enjoy respect achieve’, together with our heritage of excellent teaching and innovation in learning.

Choosing where and what to study after your GCSEs is a really important decision and is the first of many that you will make for yourself. We are a warm and welcoming learning community that is big enough to stimulate but one where each individual is known and able to pursue their specific ambitions and goals.

We offer inspirational opportunities for those who relish intellectual challenge, support from expert staff who know you well, and the chance to learn in depth through our dynamic and exceptional teaching. We nurture our students as they make the transition to independent learners and well-rounded young people. Our enrichment programme offers a wide array of opportunities to stimulate and develop our students outside the classroom.

Bohunt students leave us to take their place in society as knowledgeable, erudite and principled individuals, confident and ready to realise their ambitions.

“High expectations, excellent subject knowledge and effective questioning underpin the outstanding quality of teaching. Lessons are typically taught in a way that both inspires and fosters students’ curiosity.”

Who we are

Our sixth form has quickly established an ethos of high expectations, personalised support and academic ambition. If you choose to study with us, we will welcome you to a learning community that is filled with rich opportunity; where there is genuine pleasure in the process of learning.

In the Sixth Form, we understand that successful students are those supported as they transition from GCSE to A level students. Underpinning our curriculum, the planned learning activities not only teach the course content but also develop the skills and habits of independent learning. Our students not only engage in course concepts, but also in discussions about their own learning. The way we teach enables students to engage with the process of learning, broadening their own intellectual practice and preparing them to be lifelong learners. We have an expert and growing team of sixth form teaching and tutoring specialists who will guide students as they pursue their individual aspirations.

Please come and take a look at what we offer at our open events or contact us direct for a tour and appointment.

Our Curriculum

Bohunt Sixth Form provides a bespoke curriculum to meet the specific aspirations and needs of our students. We offer four programmes of study that are tailored to the individual strengths and abilities of each student. We are proud to offer a wide range of A level subjects that form the main body of the programme of study and are taught by expert classroom teachers with specialist knowledge. A full course list including details of entry requirements and subjects offered can be found in the course directory supplied with this prospectus and on our website.

The latest sixth form curriculum offers great challenge for learners and our three programmes are designed to enable all students to gain understanding of their subject in the depth required at A level. Many students will be offered the opportunity to study further broadening qualifications in addition to their three A levels. All four routes are intended to run over two academic years.

The four programmes of study are outlined below.

Enrichment

We offer more than the recommended teaching hours per subject and have built into our A level timetable seminar lessons that enable students to receive personalised, small group tutoring. This creates an undergraduate feel to the way we deliver the curriculum and prepares our students for university life. We provide academic support through a range of additional opportunities including our Target Programme, one-to-one tutorials and subject clinics so that our students can achieve their full potential.

Our students engage in a dialogue with teachers about the process of learning, leading to a deeper mastery of their chosen courses and the acquisition of skills that will enable them to be lifelong learners.

We are proud of our students’ achievements, and examination results are published on our website.

Our alumni, along with parents and members of our community, work in partnership with us to help students as they apply to study specific courses through UCAS and we have established links with admissions teams at the top universities.

One of our strengths is that our tutors and teachers have the time to really get to know and value our students as unique individuals. This enables us to support and guide them, making university or career applications. Our size means that individual strengths and goals are recognised and celebrated, particularly in the references we provide and the personal statements we help students to write. High quality applications with personal and detailed references are used by universities as the criteria to determine factors such as, offers being unconditional or conditional, the potential of a student and to distinguish from another student with very similar academic profile.

Support

Sixth form students are supported by specialist tutors who are available every day should they need it.

Weekly tutorial sessions cover topics as diverse as personal wellbeing, work experience, university applications and habits of learning. Our tutor groups are small, typically made up of 20 students from a range of schools, enabling tutors to really get to know individuals well.

Tutors meet with students one-to-one frequently and students are encouraged to make appointments if they need any additional support. Our wellbeing programme uses a wide range of guest speakers and covers important issues such as young people’s health, finance, alcohol and drugs awareness, driver awareness, self-defence and first aid. We have an experienced team including the Head of Sixth Form, two Assistant Heads of Sixth Form and a full time Wellbeing Officer who are able to work with students when and if they need additional support. There is a wellbeing space staffed all day, every day with our specialist Wellbeing Officer who offers a wide range of services including counselling and small group workshops as well as resilience and wellbeing training.

Opportunities

Bohunt has a reputation for providing an unrivalled range of opportunities for our students and life in the Sixth Form continues to offer young people the chance to flourish and develop outside the classroom.

The Sixth Form programme of study includes enrichment for all students and there are enrichment opportunities in both Year 12 and Year 13. We encourage our students to challenge and expand their horizons by participating in activities such as Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, sports leadership, model united nations (MUN), cookery school, scuba, climbing, trips and excursions, team building exercises, and a guest speaker programme. We are currently developing our offer for overseas activities with our student body. All students are required to participate in a sport or physical activity at least once each week and they can choose from a wide and varied physical wellbeing programme.

There is an active social life with events organised throughout the year by our students. Our sixth form is open to both internal and external Year 11 students and there are always opportunities to make new friends.

“The opportunities at Bohunt have been great. I couldn’t believe that I got the chance to carry out ecology fieldwork in St Lucia.”

Life in the Sixth Form

Unique, specialist facilities

Sixth form students at Bohunt have brand new, purpose built facilities that are used exclusively by the Sixth Form, providing a unique, small college atmosphere. The Sixth Form building is arranged over three stories and includes the café with fresh food prepared on site that can be enjoyed throughout the day. The café is a dynamic student space which is also a venue for student exhibitions, a place to catch up with friends or to work in a more relaxed setting. The common room is a place for relaxing and socialising and boasts a pool table and television as well as comfortable seating.

Our outstanding library houses an impressive collection of books and journals as well as a large range of online resources, accessed both by the LRC computers and any mobile device. We have expert librarians who have created a dynamic and up-to- date learning space through their wide knowledge and wealth of skills. Reading lists and current events in the library can be found on the library pages of our website.

In addition, our new building has a computer suite, seminar rooms, specialist science laboratories, music and music technology suite, drama space, art rooms and sixth form classrooms. The new block is located on the main school site but is accessed by separate gate and pathways and admittance to the building is by student swipe card ensuring only sixth form students and staff are in the building.

Independence in the Sixth Form

Students in our sixth form are able to express their own personal style and wear clothes that are appropriate for the learning they are doing. Our dress code reflects the fact that sixth formers are role models for our younger students but is not restrictive. Further details are on our website. During times when they are not in lessons, seminars or timetabled activities and at lunchtimes, students may leave the school site after signing out of the Sixth Form building.
