The Golden Gavel Each year, PS 199’s PTA conducts an auction that contributes substantially to its annual budget. The Auction Committee for this year’s auction, The Golden Gavel Extravaganza, began working toward this evening almost one year ago, and tonight is the culmination of those extended and extensive efforts.

Making this event a success is by no means a simple task, and the cost of failure would be grave. As you might expect, the Department of Education’s budget cuts and funding constraints directly impact children in their classrooms. Sustaining important and essential programs and services offered in the school requires an active and generous PTA, and that is where our auction truly shines.

Proceeds from this Golden Gavel Extravaganza help our PTA provide our children with programs such as art, science and technology, class supplies, Wellness In The Schools, and even environmentally friendly lunch trays. The PTA enriches our kids’ education by funding many programs that would not exist without its support, such as the Lincoln Center Institute, Vital Theater, National Dance Institute, the Center for Architectural Foundation, Technology and Science programs, Chef Anne, and much more. PTA support in recent years spearheaded the installation of Smart Boards in all classrooms, laptop computer availability, and an additional Recess Coach.

By being here tonight, bidding during the live and silent auctions or continuing the effort at the ongoing online auction, you’re contributing to the success of our children’s education. Every penny raised from the Auction directly contributes to the education of all our children, across all grades, and furthers the excellence of our school.

The importance of PTA funding, made possible by the success of the Auction, as well as all the other fundraising efforts of the school, was clearly demonstrated when, for 2013, PS 199 was designated as a National Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education. At that time, PS 199 was the only public school elementary school given this distinction.

Tonight is a celebration of the power of community and all we can accomplish when we work together selflessly to achieve a common goal. It is a celebration of our students’ love for learning, our teachers’ love for teaching, and our families’ love for giving. PS 199 would not be what it is without the dedication of each and every family that supports our school.

This auction is a culmination of more than a year’s work by our Auction Chair, the Auction Committee, the class project team leaders, class parents and countless volunteers.

It highlights the breadth of passion, dedication, and talent found in our school community.

The Class Auction Projects

E

ach year the class auction projects make a significant contribution to our biggest fundraising event of the year - the PS199 Golden Gavel Auction. Not only do these projects help raise money for our school, they also showcase the talent and creativity of our school community.

The class project is an original work of art that is a collaboration between the parent project leaders, students, and their teachers. This year, several classes were inspired by famous artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Jasper Johns, and Zigi Ben-Haim to create their own masterpieces with everyday materials such as crayon pieces and popsicle sticks. The children also explored and celebrated their community’s diversity in artwork illustrating how each family says “hello”, how their varied cultural backgrounds make them uniquely American, and how their individuality contributes to the larger tapestry of PS199.

Each creation is one-of-a-kind and priceless, and represents your chance to take home a keepsake your child learned from, helped create, and will surely cherish for years to come.

Each year, each K-4 class learns to work together to build a project they take great pride in. The Auction Projects become a vehicle for learning, teamwork, and personal development.

↑K-106 - Stacy Silver & Sara Thorne School of Fish

↑K-108 - Meghan Moulton Starry Night

Artwork lovingly made by the students of K-106. Each of the 25 fish scales was painted by a student in the class. This piece is accompanied by a beautiful hardcover book showing all the hard work, love and fun that was put into this project.

The children of K-108 have recreated Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” as a collage made up of small crayon pieces. The crayons mimic Van Gogh’s brush strokes and the pieces work together to make up glowing stars and a peaceful village under a swirly night sky.

←K-110 - Joyce Sharpe Green Eggs & Ham

We all have our favorite place to eat - Green Eggs & Ham. In this unique piece of art, the children of K-110 show you theirs! In a house, with a mouse... on the train, in the rain… in a box, with a fox! The center of this priceless depiction of the Dr. Seuss classic features a mosaic of the children bringing the beloved book cover to life. Each look is a new discovery into who loves their Green Eggs & Ham and who does not like them, Sam-I-Am!

↓K-114 - Enrique Gonzalez Fireworks over New York City

In preparation for a social studies unit on their neighborhood, Mr. G’s Kindergarten class collaborated to assemble a cityscape from the perspective of Central Park. Each student designed and cut a building out of newsprint and glued it to the collage. With a goal of lighting up the sky, the students also worked to cut out colored concentric circles of tissue paper and add the fireworks that can sometime be seen in Central Park on special occasions. Of course, no neighborhood study would be complete without including PS 199 right in front! This 4’x2’ unframed canvas also comes with a book dedicated to and all about the artists in K-114.

←K-116 - Jamie Zucker You Are You

A 15x24 framed compilation of individual photos of each child and the teachers demonstrating their favorite activity. The photos have been edited into beautiful silhouettes against a background of bright colors resulting in a collage that presents each child in a unique way, doing what they love. To reinforce their uniqueness the artwork is surrounded by a famous quote of Dr Seuss: “Today you are you.

That is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.”The artwork is accompanied by a book of water colors made by the children, bringing their favorite activities to life.

These are 12x12” hand painted acrylic on wood.

First the bards were spray painted varying metallic colors, decals were then applied. Once the pieces were painted the decals were removed to reveal the fun and inspirational quotes in metallic.

→1-212 - Ms. McSorley You Had Me at Hello

Inspired by the diversity of our classroom, Mrs. McSorley’s class chose to represent “Hello” in all the languages our students’ families speak at home and/or are the languages that are part of their cultural heritage. Each student wrote their “Hello” on white cardstock paper. Their writing was then scanned in and incorporated in a framed 24”x36” poster. Also, each student was photographed with a speech bubble. The composited photos were then compiled in a hardcover 10”x10” companion book.

←1-214 - Joann Jimenez OUR COMMUNITY: 1-214 MONOPOLY EDITION

The first graders of Miss Joann’s 1-214 class came together to create their own version of the iconic monopoly game inspired by their classroom. Each student created their own property; some cherished possessions and some physical landmarks located around their upper west side neighborhood. Regardless of the specific property, each student chose something that represents both a sense of belonging and piece of their own personal identity. Together, the properties create the framework for the game and sitting inside is a map of the UWS and PS 199 the geographic location that brings all the students together each and every day.

Each child’s hand print uniquely drawn and brightly colored and assembled to form a giant blossom

→1-218 - Melissa Fields Go Fish!

The kids of 1-218 have created beautiful “stained glass” foil art using cardboard, glue, foil and an array of colored Sharpies. Their abstract designs were then pieced together to create two strikingly graphic koi fish that were mounted on white canvas board and framed. 22x28 The children also designed their own miniature foil fish which are integrated into a book. This “school” book takes a peek into the kids’favorite moments of first grade along with their favorite underwater activities.

←1-220 - Carina Mirchandani Work Hard Be Kind

The children of class 1-220 created with their own bodies the letters that form the school motto: WORK HARD, BE KIND. The letters were formed on a colorful background of the children’s own hand prints.

←1-221 - Chelsea Steiner You Am I As our children have grown so has their awareness of the larger communities they belong to. This project is focusing on them being part of the classroom community, and how each child is intertwined with each other.

→2-202 - Amanda Rabain Custom Headbanz Game

The kids of Class 202 created a custom version of the game Headbanz, an award winning, goofy guessing game of “What am I?” Kids use their heads in more ways than one while asking yes or no questions to figure out who the character is on their head. Custom cards were created with each child dressed in a costume of a well- known character, professional, and more! Their personalities came shining through in this priceless version of the fun-filled game.

←2-206 - Peter Rockwitz Alone We Are Strong, Together We Are Powerful

A Tibetan Mandala print was enlarged and filled with a color scheme chosen by the children. We incorporated Buddhas into the design, which are actual photos of the children doing yoga poses.

The children of class 2-206 worked together to create the words of our school motto, “Work Hard, Be Kind” by forming shapes with their bodies for a dramatic, framed photograph (20”x20”). Each child also represented the letter theywere assigned with a portrait of themselves and a personal quote about a word of their choice that begins with that letter. The protraits were compiled in an accompanying book. The project is a symbol of what the kids can do when they work together - because alone we are strong, but together we are powerful.

The Kitchen Diaries of Class 2-208 is a very useful, sometimes funny and memorable cookbook bound in a beautiful hardcover book with glossy pictures, recipe templates, and very fun memories from every single family this year. It’s all you will ever need to entertain and nourish kids and grown ups!

The children worked together to create an American flag for the class auction project. We chose a flag to symbolize unity. We are all Americans, yet we have different origins and come together as one, which makes us so unique and special. It is similar to how we feel as a class. We are all individuals and we come together to form a very special group.

The children decorated their own rectangles (with their names too) to show how they are unique and different( they’ve depicted their origins, food, special occasions, clothes, festivals and things most important & fun to them) We then put their creativity together to create one piece of art work.

“FOOD FIGHT!!!” is a 6ft by 6ft, super tactile wall hanging made up of colorful felt. Each square is an abstract pattern inspired by the shape and/or texture of each student’s favorite food as well as their favorite colors.

Kaleidoscope is a beautiful mix of elements, people and colors which are constantly evolving. Just like New York City and PS199!

←3-318- Rachael Baer World Travels with Ms. Baer.

Our international travelers in Ms. Baer’s class embarked on a wonderful adventure around the world this year, and this collector’s piece symbolizes their journey!

With informed expertise, these talented third grade hands created this painting using watercolor on distinctive French paper (Aquarell Arches), artfully displayed in a Wexel floating 23” x 19” acrylic frame.

→3-320- Zoe Plantevin 60’s Traffic Jam

One of the most significant memories of the 1960’s was peace and love and what better to symbolize this than the VW Beetle and VW Type 2 Bus. Each student designed and hand colored a 5” pull-back Beetle and each teacher a Bus. Together they are mounted on a Plexiglas backing in a shadow box augmented with working lights. Each vehicle can be removed and moved around.

↑4-304 - Erin Gregorek America the Beautiful

This piece of art is the culmination of a study that the students of Mr.Miller’s class completed about animals around the world. Here they have illustrated endangered animals and mounted them on a map of the world which they created. Artwork is framed in a shadow box.

Ms. Gregorek’s Creative Class, 4-304, collaborated on a framed artwork, inspired by Zigi Ben-Haim, world famous artist, who visited the classroom to discuss his work, his inspiration, and answered very thoughtful questions from the inquisitive 4th grade class. The resulting artwork showcases the unique artistry of each child and also supports their social studies theme. So, as the class studied the History of New York and America, they painted either Landscapes, Monuments, People who influenced NY State History, New Amsterdam, Symbols of America, or Colonial America, as their inspiration.

↓4-302 - Robyn Rosenbloom Love

Mrs. Rosenbloom’s 4th grade class poured their hearts and souls into this unique work. Inspired by Robert Indiana’s pop icon LOVE sculpture, this priceless 3-D multi-media piece of art brings together all of Class 4-302’s passions. Each child contributed at least one item and the entire class helped build the sculpture together. It is beautifully framed in a 19” x 24.5” black shadow box.

↑4-306 - Sharon Chung School Spirit Masks

After studying Native Americans, the class created miniature Animal Spirit masks out of half shells from the calabash gourd. The students chose their animal based on qualities they identified with (speed, strength, wisdom, wanderlust, etc.) and decorated the masks with wood, straw, feathers, and shells. The masks are mounted on painted wood and framed in stained pine.

Accompanying the artwork is a book that provides a glimpse into the children’s creative process. The book shows the animal each child selected and includes the initial sketch for their masks. Additionally, the book lists the animal qualities the kids relate to, admire, and/or possess.

↓SE Class 126 - Leah McRae Can-do-Sky

Can-do-sky was created by the children of Leah’s class using material they have become very familiar with over the years, wool. Each child wet-felted layers of wool to create a geode. When sliced, each geode revealed a spectacular display of colors. These agate slices mounted on a colorful grid, using Arches watercolor paper, creating a unique interpretation of Kandinsky’s famous piece Squares with Concentric Circles. We all have many colorful layers beneath our outer shell and we can-do whatever we set our minds to.

↑SE Class 120 - Rachel Costello Open Hearts

Open Hearts was created with lots of love by the students of Rachael’s class. The children hand dyed Bohdi tree leaf skeletons and used watercolor pencils to create the heart designs. The Bohdi tree has significant meaning and symbolizes many things, including the potential within. With an open heart we each have the power to bring out the beauty and potential that lies within us all!

↓STREET ART - A 5th Grade Project Spearheaded by Jacqui Brown

This year, the 5th Grade project is designed to brighten up the school and leave a legacy for years to come. The children will transform the concrete wall that runs along the driveway into a work of street art that will encompass thoughts, colors and familiar symbols, to collectively illustrate who they are or what PS 199 means to them. The school motto will also feature in the overall design. There will be a Bonus Offer of a deck of playing cards, featuring their child’s design, for families to purchase with all proceeds going directly to the school.
