A Celebration of our Student Body...............................................................................

General Information Each year, PS 199’s PTA conducts an auction that contributes substantially to its annual budget. The Auction Committee for this year’s auction, The Golden Gavel Extravaganza, began working toward this evening almost one year ago, and tonight is the culmination of those extended and extensive efforts. Making this event a success is by no means a simple task, and the cost of failure would be grave. As you might expect, the Department of Education’s budget cuts and funding constraints directly impact children in their classrooms. Sustaining important and essential programs and services offered in the school requires an active and generous PTA, and that is where our auction truly shines.

The Golden Gavel

Proceeds from this Golden Gavel Extravaganza help our PTA provide our children with programs such as art, science and technology, class supplies, Wellness In The Schools, and even environmentally friendly lunch trays. The PTA enriches our kids’ education by funding many programs that would not exist without its support, such as the Lincoln Center Institute, Vital Theater, National Dance Institute, the Center for Architectural Foundation, Technology and Science programs, Chef Anne, and much more. PTA support in recent years spearheaded the installation of Smart Boards in all classrooms, laptop computer availability, and an additional Recess Coach. By being here tonight, bidding during the live and silent auctions or continuing the effort at the ongoing online auction, you’re contributing to the success of our children’s education. Every penny raised from the Auction directly contributes to the education of all our children, across all grades, and furthers the excellence of our school. The importance of PTA funding, made possible by the success of the Auction, as well as all the other fundraising efforts of the school, was clearly demonstrated when, for 2013, PS 199 was designated as a National Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education. At that time, PS 199 was the only public school elementary school given this distinction. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are The Blue Ribbon Award Ceremony was held during November 2013 in being made in students’ academic achievement. Washington, DC. Accepting the commemorative plaque for the school A National Blue Ribbon Schools flag overhead was our beloved 2nd Grade teacher, Peter Rockwitz. has become a mark of excellence in education recognized by everyone from parents to policy-makers in thousands of communities. Why does our school excel? An exemplary and dedicated team of teachers, administrators and support staff provide the backbone of PS 199’s success. Beyond that, parent involvement is what puts a good school on the path of greatness. Our active, supportive, and generous parent body provides the additional talent and resources that allow this higher level of student enrichment. We thank you for your generosity and the opportunity to continue to build the success of your school.

From Your Principal

Tonight we celebrate all the wonderful things we love about our community: our students’ love for learning, our teachers’ love for teaching, and our families’ love for giving. These are the things that make our school such a wonderful place. PS 199 would not be what it is were it not for the dedication of families supporting our school.

Letters & Recognition

Dear PS 199 Friends: We are delighted to present our 2015 Golden Gavel Auction Extravaganza.

We have received many incredible donations, and you will surely find a number of “must have” items among the live, silent and online auctions. Please help us achieve the necessary fundraising goals by carefully reviewing the items available for bid and participating enthusiastically in the live, silent and online auctions. The online auction continues even after the live event, see page 39 for more information and bid, bid, bid! As you know, we asked each class to participate in this program, and we’re proud to announce that every class contributed by submitting a “class ad.” In doing so, we’ve created a bit of a yearbook, and we suggest you share this with your kids and encourage them to have their classmates leave them a message of the year for them on page 38. Our auction committee is a dedicated team of communication and marketing experts, solicitation bulldogs, organizational wizards, and many other talented individuals who have worked tirelessly through the year to make all of this happen. I am most grateful for their professionalism, energy and friendship, and I encourage you to join our team if you are looking for a rewarding way to be more involved in the school. A tremendous thank you to all the Auction supporters amongst the PS 199 community: Our parents, teachers, staff, students, friends, family, sponsors and advertisers. We thank you, our gold medal parents, for your generosity. Enjoy the evening!

From your Auction Committee

The Auction is all about our kids - PS 199’s kids - and the road we pave for their success. We are very fortunate to be a part of an exceptional school with an energetic PTA. Together, these two entities combine to continually build, enhance and expand the opportunities our children have for growth. Of course, none of that comes without a cost, and the proceeds from this event fund the majority of the PTA’s annual budget. Your generosity is what allows PS 199 to provide the essential support and beloved enrichment programs our children and teachers need and use every day.

The Class Auction Projects

T

he class auction project is an integral part of our biggest fundraising event of the year. Parents are asked to volunteer their time and talent to lead their child’s class project, and every year the display of community and creativity is astounding. As you might expect, this year was no exception. The class project is an original work of art that is a collaboration between the parent project leaders, students, and their teachers. This year, these works took the form of quilts, unique framed paintings, infinite swirls of paper, rubbed copper, and even personalized board games, to name a few. Not only did the project teams receive a lot of help and support from all our wonderful teachers during class time, but some also benefited from the creative support of our art teachers Ms. Dau and Ms. Hill.

Class Projects

The inspiration for these works of art often come from the children’s classroom community, their studies, their collective interests, or simply their pride in PS199. Our school motto of “Work Hard, Be Kind” has been a recurring theme in projects past and present, with each original piece representing the children’s interpretation of what it means to them. Each creation is oneof-a-kind and priceless, and represents your chance to take home a keepsake your child learned from, helped create, and will surely cherish for years to come.

Each year, each K-4 class learns to work together to build a project they take great pride in. The Auction Projects become a vehicle for learning, teamwork, and personal development.

25 wishes secretly written inside the coiled silvery paper by 25 artists finishes off this stunning collage and paper quilling masterpiece of the solar system. In addition there is a wax sealed document listing all the children’s wishes.

Our Faces

Our World A 24 x24 poster of The Planet Earth was cut up into 36 squares. Each child (25) and 2 teachers=27 reproduced with paint a 4 x 4 square of the poster randomly. We then put the 27 pieces back together including 9 pieces of the original Earth poster like a puzzle. It created a mosaic effect. Our Earth by K-114 was created!

Upper Westside Busytown

Bookland

Inspired by Richard Scarry’s Busytown, the kids of K-110 each drew a “silly-mobile”. Photos of the children were then photoshopped into each drawing so that they are all “driving” their own cars. Their car illustrations were then used to create a “Car Catalog” which gives important details such as the car’s name, fuel preference, and its special features. These silly-mobiles were made into magnets so they can drive around the Upper West Side on a framed 23 x 30 magnetic illustration of their own Busytown neighborhood for interactive fun! The 2015 PS199 PTA Golden Gavel Extravaganza

K-116 has created a collaborative painting inspired by the books they have read in class. The children created a list of their favorite story book characters and each child selected one to illustrate and then created individual original watercolor renditions of their selected character. The characters were cut out and collaged into one large art piece- a story book land- where all of their favorite characters come together.

Each student etched a selfportrait, chose the color they wanted to use and used a printmaking technique to create prints of their etched portraits. The adjectives are the words the students gave when asked “How would you describe yours and your friends’ faces?” The end product is a collage of 25 self portraits of kindergarteners printed in the colors they chose and surrounded by words they think best describes theirs and their peers’ faces.

Hexagon Watercolor Study

I Thumb NYC

Through art, children share their feelings in a way that evokes emotion to those that view it. This watercolor study allowed our children to express their confidence and curiosity; as primary colors are intertwined to create a new colors, shapes and spaces. The combinations of these individual hexagons, painted by our K-118 artists together created this beautiful watercolor study piece.

A vibrant NYC Skyline thumb printed by the children of Grade 1-216. Each child was assigned a distinct paint color to imprint their thumbs over a NYC Skyline silhouette. The legend at the bottom of the skyline identify each child’s thumb print. The mounted and framed art work measures 51”x18”.

Sunshine Hands

Left our Mark in NYC

Sunshine Hands is a wall fixture made of watercolor paint on watercolor paper, by Ms. Katzman’s class of 27 children. Each child drew and cut out the outline of their right hand on watercolor paper. The children painted and used glitter powder to color their hands, which were fixed into a sun shape with the palm pointing towards the center of the sun and the fingers pointing outward. This piece combines the beauty of the 1st Graders’ little hands evoking innocence, sweetness, creativity, growing desire for independence, with the warmth of the sun shining and allowing life in its surroundings, as well as the notion of reaching for infinity.

This original thumbprint skyline of NYC (12”x24” canvas) is a dynamic and colorful representation of our beloved city as well as a study in collaboration: each member of our class imprinted a unique mark making this a one-of-a-kind skyline. Accompanied by an 11”x14” Photo/Art Book, a curated collection of our artwork and documents our year of learning, celebrating and cultivating community in 1-218.

The World’s Future Leaders

The Quilt with No Pictures

Ms. Joann started the year with each artist drawing a self portrait. Lessons throughout the year centered around the school motto of “WORK HARD BE KIND”. Later in the year, each artist created a “new” self portrait to show how they have changed. This piece was created with each artist’s recent self portrait framing the school motto to remind us that “working hard” and “being kind” is part of who we are. Each child, with their reading partner, decorated a letter using beads of different colors combined for a beautiful pictorial representation of who and how our future leaders are...and are meant to behave. Inspired by one of our favorite books, The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak, we made a cozy quilt with all of our favorite funny words from the book. Each child (and our teachers, too!) decorated one square of the quilt and they are sewn together to tell the hilarious story. The hardest part was not to draw any pictures! It’s a beautiful memory of first grade and all the fun we had laughing together with Ms. Vatkina. Bonk.

Roots and Wings

Popsicle Art

Class 1-222 created two collaborative pieces for project ‘Roots and Wings’. It consists of a 22x28” framed art work in which the children finger-painted birds in a rainbow colored theme. The birds depict our children, to whom we can give two things - Roots (i.e. firm foundation) and Wings (i.e. independence and confidence). The children also researched birds and plants beginning with their assigned alphabet. Their research along with their finger prints are shown in the accompanying book.

For this one-ofa-kind work of art, the students in Ms. Hall’s second grade class created their own designs on a small scale using popsicle sticks. Assembled together, the finished product is a reflection of each child’s individual contribution and the warmth and vitality of the classroom community.

2-210 Ms. Egger Color Explosion! Ms. Eggers 2nd graders embarked on a fantastic journey of worlds and color. Each child worked in teams on this beautifully, straw-blown, painted creation on 25x30 canvas.

A Study of My 2nd Grade Self The project is a beautiful wall hanging hand made by Ms. Rabain’s class, including the teachers. It is a 3-dimensional form of their 2nd grade selves, an exploration of how they see themselves and how they experience their surroundings-the beads symbolize all of life’s joys: each cushion has a hand drawn portrait and a name on the back. It measures approx 3’X5’.

The children of class 234 worked both independently and in groups to make shapes with their bodies that they could use to form letters, and then those letters created a sentence.. In Pat’s class they all practice to Work Hard and Be Kind, so this is a special “One Of A Kind 24 x 36 original wrapped canvas of their collaborative efforts. All 29 children are represented and each childs name is included in scripted calligraphy in this timeless remembrance of 2nd grade in Pat Bleichman’s class. ∙ 43 ∙

Interpretation of a Faith Ringgold quilt

Silver and Gold

The project is a felt quilt which was inspired by the artist Faith Ringgold, known for her quilts that tell stories about her family life. The children made a quilt based on the animals that they have been studying in their social studies unit on Brazil. Each child sewed one rectangle with his/hers animal in it and their initials. Then all pieces were assembled together in one amazing artwork. This art piece was made 100% by the children under the artistic direction of Michelle Hill and the collaboration of Ms Lapide on the animals search and study.

3-322 Mr. Miller The Strength of a Penny

Circles of Wonder Playful shapes collide in Ms. Becker’s Circles of Wonder! The kids were given blank circles and squares on which to design their very own geometric creations. See them collide and play off one another - all on a stunning silver backdrop! Each child’s creation is made from card stock, felt, colored pencil and Sharpie and is discretely labeled with each child’s name.

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s repeated imagery, each child “discovered” their penny using the technique of copper foiling. The artists rubbed a square of copper until either a “head” or “tail” was revealed. Each then chose a word that has to do with Philanthropy, which Mr. Miller focused on this year, and “signed” their work with a word which reminds us that each single penny - when gathered together - can make a profound difference. Each copper piece was wrapped around another canvas and laid out in a repeated image to show the different ways combined pennies can make a difference. 4-302 Ms. Rosenbloom

Guess who?

World Wide Web Using just nails, a board and string, the children of class 3-318 collaborated to create this oneof-a-kind map of the 7 continents. After studying the world map with Ms. Baer, each student was able to identify the continent he or she was working on. Working in small groups we discussed our own world travels while stringing together this unique project inspired by the third grade curriculum. Beautifully presented in its own custom frame, ready to hang in your home. The 2015 PS199 PTA Golden Gavel Extravaganza

Ms. Silver’s class focused on the positive contribution of trees, bringing beauty, clean air, shade and many other things to our lives. To celebrate these gifts, the kids created leaves out of gold foil and penciled in details to create an embossed effect. The leaves were then mounted on beautiful stretched silk to form a tree. In addition to this framed 20x24 inch wall art, the kids compiled a book about what trees mean to them. Some share poems, others share stories, and others describe particular kinds of trees. The kids then added illustrations to complement their writing!

Influenced by Henri Matisse’s cut-out works of the mid20th century, Ms. Chung’s students were shown a picture of Central Park and groups were asked to choose to cut out buildings, trees, sky or grass. The scissors went flying and the students created their interpretation of the picture from colored construction paper.
