ALPACAS and education might sound like an odd combination, but they have proved to be an excellent mix for North East speech pathologist and author Sue Carolane. She has spent her career working with school children throughout the region to help them overcome speech difficulties. And over the years, the property she shares with husband David has also been home to a quirky, individual herd of fluffy alpacas. A friend suggested she combine her work with educating the world about alpacas, and her book, Aa is for Alpacas, was born last year. “People think alpacas are cute, and they don’t know much about them, so it was a good idea,” Sue said, pleased with how the book has been received in Australia, and internationally. She said many alphabet books can be confusing for children, particularly if they have speech or learning difficulties, because the alphabet letter often does not have the same sound as the word example being used – for example, “g” being matched with something that begins with a soft g, not a hard g, such as “g is for giraffe”. Sue remains as passionate as ever around helping children improve their learning skills and gain confidence through overcoming speech issues. continued page |
