FOR hundreds of school children across the North East, being part of the ever expanding Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden School and Kitchen Garden Classroom programs means more than just getting a chance to dig in the garden. They get to learn cooking skills, improve their maths skills and teamwork, and find out more about nutrition. Wangaratta’s Yarrunga Primary School was among one of the first in the state to join the program a decade ago, and student Ashlea Knight, who cooks at home with her mum, said it’s fun being in the kitchen at school. Fellow student Zack Drage agrees, and gets great enjoyment cooking the fresh food from produce they’ve grown themselves. For Aleisha Hay, the gardening and picking of the fresh food is a highlight, while classmate Connor O’Brien likes trying out new recipes on his family at home. The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation helps more than 150,000 students at 1000 schools and early years learning centres across Australia teach children the joys of growing and cooking fresh, seasonal food. Yarrunga Primary School staff member, Greg Cherry, said he had seen many children grow and expand their knowledge through being involved in the program over the years. “You watch them grow,” he said. “Some of the kids become very proficient.” Greg said the program, aided by many volunteers, helped children understand more about nutrition and that “you don’t have to go to a fast food outlet to do something quickly”. “They’re great life skills,” he said. “I see kids that were here (at the school) 10 years ago and it’s one thing that always comes up about their primary school experience.” continued page |
