FIRES, floods, car accidents or other devastating events and trauma can test the strength of individuals and communities alike. Across the North East, there are a number of initiatives attempting to build the resilience of their respective communities. Whether they are newly formed or longer lasting, all are focusing on the continuing wellbeing of the local population. Helping others in the idyllic King Valley area is Carol Kunert, who is involved with the King Valley Resilience Committee and who recently completed an Upper King Valley Community Resilience Leadership Program, alongside fellow resident Bobbie Tischer. She said the area has seen its fair share of traumatic events, and the tools are needed to build community resilience. “A community not only needs to be well prepared among individuals, but what’s also important is to work together during an emergency,” she said. She added that working closely with emergency services and developing individual and community plans and coping strategies were also part of the foundation for resilience, as are ongoing communication and cooperation, and identifying and monitoring vulnerable residents. A resident of the area for 20 years, she has long been involved with the community. “I wanted to be able to help out where I could,” she said of her resilience committee role. Members of the committee are working together to have a draft of a community resilience plan completed in the very near future. continued page |
