GEOFF was aged just 42 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological condition that affects a person’s control of their body movements.
“It’s a big change to confront a life with disability,” the Wangaratta resident said.
“I’ve needed people around me to help understand the nature of my changing life.”
April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time to recognise and build awareness of the impact of living with Parkinson’s.
Geoff is one of more than 219,000 Australians who have Parkinson’s, and one of the 10 to 20 per cent of people diagnosed in their 20s to 50s.
Working as a successful engineering lecturer, Geoff was fit and healthy, and, like many, viewed Parkinson’s as “a disease for old people”.
“It floored me,” Geoff, now 57, recalls.
He describes the impact on his life since then as “profound”.
“It affects my mobility and balance; I’m constantly falling over,” he said.
“That’s embarrassing as a grown man to be sitting at the doctors with grazed knees, I feel like a five-year-old.”

THE term ‘brachycephalic’ refers to dogs with flat faces including pugs, English bulldogs, French bulldogs etc.
Due to their flattened noses and faces, these dogs often have problems with their breathing, resulting in a condition known as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).
The syndrome encompasses various anatomy limiting traits in these breeds including narrowed nostrils, thicker and longer soft palates and enlarged tonsils.
This combination results in our brachycephalic dogs having to put more effort into breathing.
Sometimes it may result in complete blockage of the airways which is a lifethreatening emergency.
If you own a brachycephalic breed, there are several things you can do to help minimise these risks.
Dogs should be kept inside, especially on hot days, with air conditioning on and plenty of access to water.
On warmer days, exercise should be limited to early morning and evening when temperatures have dropped.
Don’t make exercise too strenuous – gentle walks are safer than excited ball retrieving.
A healthy weight is also important, as extra weight can increase pressure on the lungs, narrow the airways and increase body temperature.
Excitement and stress should also be kept to a minimum.
In addition to these simple things we can accommodate into their lifestyle, there is also great value in corrective surgery to allow these dogs to breathe easier.
While some brachycephalic dogs need surgery more urgently than others, nearly all will benefit from some form of surgery.
BOAS is unfortunately a progressive disease, and while we cannot cure it, there are plenty of things we can do to help your dog live a longer and more comfortable life.
If you have any questions regarding brachycephalic obstructive syndrome or surgical correction, don’t hesitate to discuss further with your vet.
THEATRE ROYAL
A GALA occasion in Wangaratta, as Sam Osboldstone re-opened the old Masonic Theatre as The Theatre Royal.

Trout streams are still fishing well, Murray cod going in Lake Mulwala
WE are heading into the “off season” of freshwater fishing for many anglers, but for those of us that just live to fish, there are still plenty of fishing options around.
The region’s trout streams are still fishing well.
The trout fishing has become a little more temperamental as it often does later in the season, but there are still plenty of good trout fishing days ahead of us yet.
Last week I went trout fishing in a small tributary of the King River where I managed to catch a couple of lovely brown trout.
There colours were quite dark which is normal in the build up to spawning season.
I caught my trout on a Strike Tiger Nymph soft plastic in an

Although the trout have not started spawning yet, and probably won’t do for a few more weeks, they were really attacking my bright orange, trout egg coloured lure.

My friend Trevor Kay caught a 70cm Murray cod on a surface lure at Bundalong on one of his own home made surface lures on Anzac Day.
From the photos that I have seen, lures seem to be catching the most fish down that way.
I have not heard any reports from anyone using bait in Lake Mulwala recently.

One of the most challenging aspects for Geoff has been the knock to his confidence and self-worth.
Finding and maintaining a job is a real struggle.
“I know at some stage I’m going to disappoint my employer, sometimes I can’t get out of bed,” Geoff said.
“You don’t realise how connected you are with your job.
“When you meet someone one of the first things they ask is ‘what do you do for work?’
“It’s really hard.
“When you hit a life-changing illness like Parkinson, it’s so deep the way it affects you.”
And so, when Geoff found the Cre8 Shed in his hometown of Wangaratta, he describes it as a “revelation”.
Run by for-purpose disability and aged care organisation VMCH, Cre8
gives around 45 people with disability the opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, socialise, gain work experience, express creativity and have fun.
“I didn’t know what to expect when I showed up here,” Geoff said.
“But it was magical to meet people who actually understand the nature of disability, and a relief to speak to someone who understood my journey and wasn’t trying to belittle me.”
John Salafia, disability services team leader of Cre8tive Programs, describes Geoff as “determined, patient and kind with a great sense of humour and a wealth of knowledge”.
“I feel Geoff has not only grown in his creative skills, but also his social outlet and interactions,” John said.
“Geoff tells us he ‘feels hope again’.
“I think this is his greatest achievement of all.”
Geoff has also become a part of the VMCH Disability Consumer Advisory Committee and the Wangaratta VMCH Advisory Group, advocating for people with disability.
The Cre8 team has also offered Geoff paid employment, when he’s ready.
“The sense of having done a day’s work and producing something is great,” Geoff said.
“That’s always been important to me.
“I feel so comfortable and happy now that I have purpose and focus.
“Cre8 is like a home, like a big family.”

By targeting specific points on the body, Bowen Therapy stimulates the body’s innate healing mechanisms, promoting pain relief and restoring balance.
It can alleviate a wide range of conditions, including back pain, migraines, and sports injuries, making it a versatile option for holistic pain management.
