POSITIVE engagement with the community by a local resident over the last eight months via social media has helped progress rectification work by Parks Victoria to Spring Creek bridge with pedestrian access expected by June next year. The Beechworth Historic Park bridge in the Gorge scenic drive section, which closed in October 2022, has been off limits to the public since then due to safety concerns about its structural integrity after floods. Retired La Trobe University professor, Beechworth’s Evan Willis, said he used the Facebook community forum as a sounding board to harness people’s ideas about a resolution and the type of traffic the bridge should take. Traffic included walkers, horse riders, cars and fire trucks as well as the possibility of a bailey bridge with community fundraising. “For every post I received at least 100 responses,” Mr Willis said. Mr Willis recently posted a positive outcome from liaison with Parks

Victoria where Northern Rivers District manager Jessica Reid advised funding is expected in the next pool of government funding for the October 2022 flood event. She said the Spring Creek Bridge had been scoped as a project with confirmation that specific funding had been allocated to works. “These repairs will be supplemented by any further funds we can negotiate from the VMIA (Victorian Managed Insurance Authority) for the insurable component of the bridge,” she said. For Mr Willis, an overarching need is for fire truck access as the southern flank of the town is exposed to fire risk. “Many older members of the community who have been around for a long time who I’ve spoken to have said this is probably the point of greatest vulnerability for the community of fire coming up the gorge,” he said. ■ Continued page 2
